Sixth disease (Exanthem subitum) and Fifth disease (Erythema infectious) are two infectious diseases very common in infancy; parents generally believe that their children get infected from peers sharing the same spaces (e.g. kindergarten companions or siblings). From March to May 2020 in Italy exceptional measures were taken to contain the new Corona virus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. These measures strongly reduced or cancelled contacts between children; nevertheless, in that period we registered 13 cases of sixth disease and 3 cases of fifth disease in a single paediatrics’ office. These children stayed always home and had contacts only with their parents or close relatives; seven of them were only son; adults had only occasionally contacts with the outside using personal protective equipment. Lockdown has been not only a necessary measure to contain the SARS-CoV-2 spread but also an unprecedented biological experiment that shed new light on old infectious diseases. Our experience confirms that asymptomatic adults often transmit sixth and Fifth diseases to their children and can help people to be aware of transmission mode of these infections. In recent years, various studies have demonstrated the potential of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in the rehabilitation of human limbs. This article is a systematic review of the state of the art and opportunities in the development of BCIs for the rehabilitation of upper and lower limbs of the human body. The systematic review was conducted in databases considering using EEG signals, interface proposals to rehabilitate upper/lower limbs using motor intention or movement assistance and utilizing virtual environments in feedback. Studies that did not specify which processing system was used were excluded. Analyses of the design processing or reviews were excluded as well. It was identified that 11 corresponded to applications to rehabilitate upper limbs, six to lower limbs, and one to both. Likewise, six combined visual/auditory feedback, two haptic/visual, and two visual/auditory/haptic. In addition, four had fully immersive virtual reality (VR), three semi-immersive VR, and 11 non-immersive VR. In summary, the studies have demonstrated that using EEG signals, and user feedback offer benefits including cost, effectiveness, better training, user motivation and there is a need to continue developing interfaces that are accessible to users, and that integrate feedback techniques.

The processes of nitrogen (N) mineralization from organic amendments (OA) is important to provide mineral forms (NH4+ and NO3−) of N for plants. Assessment of N mineralization is usually done by using the C/N ratio of OAs but limits to the predicting capability of such indicator have been reported. Here, we propose a new definition of organic carbon (C) quality based on 13C-CPMAS NMR that provide a more accurate prediction of N mineralization. A mesocosm incubation experiment was carried out to assess the effects of ten OA types on soil N mineralization in three different soils. OAs were chemically characterized by C/N ratio and in solid state spectroscopy by 13C-CPMAS NMR. Nitrogen mineralization in terms of NH4+ and NO3− was monitored after 3, 10, 30, 100, and 300 days of incubation. N mineralization was fast for OAs with high C quality coupled with high N content (e.g., meat powder, fish meal and alfalfa litter), while the same process was slow for amendment with low C quality even with high N content (e.g. humus, alfalfa biochar). On the contrary, a rapid but short-term N immobilization was found for OAs with high C quality but low N content (e.g., glucose). OAs with low C quality and low N content (e.g., sawdust, cellulose, wood biochar and grass litter) showed a slow, but long-lasting N immobilization. We found that C/N ratio was unable to predict the N mineralization for OAs with low C quality. Considering 13C-CPMAS NMR spectral regions, the carbonyl C, and N-alkyl and methoxyl C regions had the most significant positive correlation with N mineralization, while the di-O-alkyl C and O-alkyl C were strongly associated with N immobilization. This study demonstrates that the biochemical quality of organic C defined by 13C-CPMAS NMR is capable of predicting N dynamic pattern better than C/N ratio.

Background: Shrub encroachment (SE) is a phenomenon in which grasses and herbaceous vegetation are replaced by woody shrubs. The progressive spread of shrubs represents a form of land cover change that is widespread in arid and semi-arid grassland ecosystems. Many previous studies have highlighted the effects of SE on soil respiration rates and nutrient storage, but little is known about its belowground effects. While previous work considered shrubs to be non-species specific or as a single intervening species, we selected an Ampelodemsos mauritanicus grassland and six coexisting shrubs (i.e. Pistacia lentiscus L., Juniperus phoenicea L., Myrtus communis L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Olea europaea L., and Euphorbia dendroides L.) to investigate the effects of their encroachment on soil microbiota. We used high-throughput sequencing, coupled with soil chemical analyses and litter using 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy.Results: Results showed a strong influence of shrub canopy on bacterial and fungal community diversity, species richness and overall community composition in the soil. Litter chemistry was dominated by O-alkyl-C, with the highest content in Ampelodesmsos and Euphorbia, but richer of aromatic C in Pistacia and Rosmarinus. Bacterial diversity was highest under Juniperus and Euphorbia, while lowest under Rosmarinus and grassland. Conversely, fungal diversity was highest under Olea and Euphorbia, while lowest under Myrtus and grassland. Moreover, soil C and N contents were highest under Olea, Pistacia and Myrtus compared to the other canopies. In addition, grassland and Rosmarinus had the highest Fe content. Furthermore, increased co-occurrence network size and connectivity were recorded under shrubs compared to the grassland matrix.Conclusions: Our results suggest that the individual effect of each shrub on the grassland matrix depends mainly on the chemical properties of the shrub litter, which alters the chemical profile of the soil and, in cascade, shapes the associated microbiota.

Background and aim: Litter decomposition is of great concern as it plays a key role in regulating global carbon cycle and nutrient budgets, especially in tropical forests where it is very fast. Therefore, we studied the decomposition and subsequent changes in element concentrations and amounts of 11 tropical leaf litter. Methods: Fresh litters were characterized in terms of elemental, proximate features, as well as organic carbon compositions by 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Controlled litterbag decomposition was carried out for 180 days in the laboratory, bags were retrieved at three dates and analyzed for mass loss and concentration of nitrogen (N), potassium (K), sodium (Na), carbon (C), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn), and percentage of ash, extractives, cellulose and lignin. Results: Terminalia arjuna showed highest mass loss, while the lowest was observed in Shorea robusta showing significant positive correlation with litter initial K, Mg, Fe and di-O-alkyl C, O-alkyl C, while significant negative correlation with Mn, lignin and Methoxyl C, Alkyl C. Trajectories shows that Fe, Mg, K, Mn, Zn and Na concentrations increased in most of the litter types, except Terminalia arjuna and Toona ciliata, where Fe, Mg, K concentrations decreased during decomposition. Surprisingly, in most of the species with the exception of Terminalia arjuna, N concentrations decreased at a faster rate than C concentrations, resulting in an increase in C/N ratios. Expectedly, lignin progressively increased, while cellulose decreased. Conclusions: Observed differences in decomposition rate and dynamics of chemical changes among litters were strongly affected by the litter type, decomposition time and their interactions.

Traditional phenological models use the concepts of chilling and thermal forcing (temperature sum or degree-days) to predict buds break. Even if new model formulations get more sophisticated with time, the bases of phenological model still rely on the effect of the time of chilling and forcing temperature in interaction, or not, with photoperiod. Because of the increasing impact of climate or other related biotic or abiotic stressors, a model with more biological support is urgently needed in order to accurately predict bud break. We have developed and calibrated a new mechanistic model that is based on the physiological processes taking place before and during budbreak in several conifers species. This model describes the phenology and growth dynamics of a conifer branch as representative of the whole tree. As a general assumption, we assume that phenology will be driven by the carbon status, which is closely related to the annual cycle of dormancy – activity state through the year and to the environmental variables. The carbon balance of a branch was thus modelled i) from autumn to winter–when aboveground parts exhibit cold acclimation and dormancy– and ii) from winter to spring and summer –when deacclimation and growth resumption occurs. After being calibrated in a field experiment, the model was tested across a large area in Québec (Canada), based on observed phenological data. For the 20 field sites in Quebec, the model proved to be accurate in predicting the date of budbreak with an average error of ±3.8 days (R2=0.72). This model also allowed us to better understand the effects of winter and spring temperature on bud burst, offering new simulation perspectives under global warming and insect defoliation.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a reference model system and one of the widely used microorganisms in many biotechnological processes. In industrial yeast applications, combined strategies aim to maximize biomass/product yield, with the fed-batch culture being one of the most frequently used. Flow cytometry (FCM) is widely applied in biotechnological processes and represents a key methodology to monitor cell population dynamics. We propose here an application of FCM in the analysis of yeast cell cycle along the time course of a typical S. cerevisiae fed-batch culture. We used two different dyes, SYTOX Green and SYBR Green, with the aim to better define each stage of cell cycle during S. cerevisiae fed-batch culture. The results provide novel insights in the use of FCM cell cycle analysis for the real-time monitoring of S. cerevisiae bioprocesses.

We address a mathematical model to approximate in a coarse qualitative the interaction between inbreeding-lobbying and interdisciplinarity in academia and perform a one and two-parameter numerical bifurcation analysis to analyse its dynamics. Disciplinary diversity is a necessary condition for the development of interdisciplinarity, which is being recognized today as the key to establish a vibrant academic environment with bigger potential for breakthroughs/innovation in research and technology. However, the interaction of several factors including institutional policies, and behavioural attitudes put significant barriers on advancing interdisciplinarity. A “cognitive rigidity” may rise due to reactive academic lobby behaviours favouring inbreeding. The proposed model consists of four coupled non-linear Ordinary Differential Equations simulating the interaction between certain types of academic behaviour and the rate of knowledge advancement which is related to the level of disciplinary diversity. The effect of a control policy that inhibits inbreeding-lobbying is also investigated. The numerical bifurcation analysis reveals a rich nonlinear behaviour including multistability, sustained oscillations, limit points of limit cycles, homoclinic bifurcations as well as codimension-two bifurcations and in particular Bogdanov–Takens and Bautin bifurcations.

Introduction The rapid development of electromechanical and robotic devices has profoundly influenced neurorehabilitation. Growth in the scientific and technological aspects thereof is crucial for increasing the number of newly developed devices, and clinicians have welcomed such growth with enthusiasm. Nevertheless, improving the standard for the reporting clinical, technical, and normative aspects of such electromechanical and robotic devices remains an unmet need in neurorehabilitation. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyse the existing literature on electromechanical and robotic devices used in neurorehabilitation, considering the current clinical, technical, and regulatory classification systems. Evidence acquisition Within the CICERONE Consensus Conference framework, studies on electromechanical and robotic devices used for upper- and lower-limb rehabilitation in persons with neurological disabilities in adulthood and childhood were reviewed. We have conducted a literature search using the following databases: MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PeDro, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Clinical, technical, and regulatory classification systems were applied to collect information on the electromechanical and robotic devices. The study designs and populations were investigated. Evidence synthesis Overall, 316 studies were included in the analysis. More than half (52%) of the studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The population investigated the most suffered from strokes, followed by spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and traumatic brain injuries. In total, 100 devices were described; of these, 19% were certified with the CE mark. Overall, the main type of device was an exoskeleton. However, end-effector devices were primarily used for the upper limbs, whereas exoskeletons were used for the lower limbs (for both children and adults). Conclusions The current literature on robotic neurorehabilitation lacks detailed information regarding the technical characteristics of the devices used. This affects the understanding of the possible mechanisms underlying recovery. Unfortunately, many electromechanical and robotic devices are not provided with CE marks, strongly hindering the research on the clinical outcomes of rehabilitation treatments based on these devices. A more significant effort is needed to improve the description of the robotic devices used in neurorehabilitation in terms of the technical and functional details, along with high-quality RCT studies.

Introduction Postural instability is a cardinal feature of Parkinson's disease, together with rest tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia. It is a highly disabling symptom that becomes increasingly common with disease progression and represents a major source of reduced quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. Rehabilitation aims to enable patients with Parkinson's disease to maintain their maximum level of mobility, activity and independence. To date, a wide range of rehabilitation approaches has been employed to treat postural instability in Parkinson's disease, including robotic training. Our main aim was to conduct a systematic review of current literature about the effects of robot-assisted gait training on postural instability in patients with Parkinson's disease. Evidence acquisition A systematic search using the following MeSH terms "Parkinson disease," "postural balance," "robotics," "rehabilitation" AND string "robotics [mh]" OR "robot-assisted" OR "electromechanical" AND "rehabilitation [mh]" OR "training" AND "postural balance [mh]" was conducted on PubMed, Cochrane Library and Pedro electronic databases. Full text articles in English published up to December 2020 were included. Data about patient characteristics, robotic devices, treatment procedures and outcome measures were considered. Every included article got checked for quality. Level of evidence was defined for all studies. Evidence synthesis Three authors independently extracted and verified data. In total, 18 articles (2 systematic reviews, 9 randomized controlled trials, 4 uncontrolled studies and 3 case series/case reports) were included. Both end-effector and exoskeleton devices were investigated as to robot-assisted gait training modalities. No clear relationship between treatment parameters and clinical conditions was observed. We found a high level of evidence about the effects of robot-assisted gait training on balance and freezing of gait in patients with Parkinson's disease. Conclusions This systematic review provides to the reader a complete overview of current literature and levels of evidence about the effects of robot-assisted gait training on postural instability issues (static and dynamic balance, freezing of gait, falls, confidence in activities of daily living and gait parameters related to balance skills) in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Introduction Stroke is the third leading cause of adult disability world-wide, and lower extremity motor impairment is one of the major determinants of long-term disability. Although robotic therapy is becoming more and more utilized in research protocols for lower limb stroke rehabilitation, the gap between research evidence and its use in clinical practice is still significant. The aim of this study was to determine the scope, quality, and consistency of guidelines for robotic lower limb rehabilitation after stroke, in order to provide clinical recommendations. Evidence acquisition We systematically reviewed stroke rehabilitation guideline recommendations between January 1st, 2010 and October 31th, 2020. We explored electronic databases (n=4), guideline repositories and professional rehabilitation networks (n=12). Two independent reviewers used the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II instrument, and brief syntheses were used to evaluate and compare the different recommendations, considering only the most recent version. Evidence synthesis From the 1219 papers screened, ten eligible guidelines were identified from seven different regions/countries. Four of the included guidelines focused on stroke management, the other six on stroke rehabilitation. Robotic rehabilitation is generally recommended to improve lower limb motor function, including gait and strength. Unfortunately, there is still no consensus about the timing, frequency, training session duration and the exact characteristics of subjects who could benefit from robotics. Conclusions Our systematic review shows that the introduction of robotic rehabilitation in standard treatment protocols seems to be the future of stroke rehabilitation. However, robot assisted gait training (RAGT) for stroke needs to be improved with new solutions and in clinical practice guidelines, especially in terms of applicability.

Processing and control systems based on artificial intelligence (AI) have progressively improved mobile robotic exoskeletons used in upper-limb motor rehabilitation. This systematic review presents the advances and trends of those technologies. A literature search was performed in Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and PubMed using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology with three main inclusion criteria: (a) motor or neuromotor rehabilitation for upper limbs, (b) mobile robotic exoskeletons, and (c) AI. The period under investigation spanned from 2016 to 2020, resulting in 30 articles that met the criteria. The literature showed the use of artificial neural networks (40%), adaptive algorithms (20%), and other mixed AI techniques (40%). Additionally, it was found that in only 16% of the articles, developments focused on neuromotor rehabilitation. The main trend in the research is the development of wearable robotic exoskeletons (53%) and the fusion of data collected from multiple sensors that enrich the training of intelligent algorithms. There is a latent need to develop more reliable systems through clinical validation and improvement of technical characteristics, such as weight/dimensions of devices, in order to have positive impacts on the rehabilitation process and improve the interactions among patients, teams of health professionals, and technology.

Having a pivotal role in biogeochemical cycles, litter decomposition affects plant growth and regeneration by inducing the release of allelochemicals. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the microbiota in modulating the allelopathic effects of freshly fallen and decomposed leaf litter. To disentangle the chemical and microbial effects, bioassays were carried out on four target plants in sterile and non-sterile conditions. All litter types were characterized by carbon-13 cross polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy, and the associated fungal and bacterial microbiota were described by next-generation sequencing. When the litter extract was sterilized, freshly fallen litter severely inhibited the plant root growth, but during decomposition, the allelopathic effect rapidly decreased. Root growth was negatively correlated with extractable carbon and positively correlated with parameters associated with tissue lignification. In non-sterile conditions, the living microbiota modulated the leaf litter allelopathic effects of mitigation (26.5% of cases) and exacerbation (26.6% of cases). The mitigation effect was more frequent and intense in stressful conditions, i.e., highly phytotoxic freshly fallen litter, than in benign environments, i.e., decomposed litter. Finally, we identified specific bacterial and fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that could be involved in the mediation of the litter allelopathic effect. This study highlights the importance of studying allelopathy in both sterile conditions and in the presence of a living microbiota to assess the role of litter chemistry and the potential impact of plant detritus on the agro-ecosystem and natural plant communities.

The regular configuration of fungal basidiomycetous fronts in fairy rings allows a thorough scrutiny of associated soil changes. Here, we studied the soil chemistry and the microbiota modifications induced by the passage of Calocybe gambosa fairy rings in a botanical garden. Significant changes in soil physicochemical properties and microbiota were observed in correspondence of active fungal mycelium, where an accumulation of nutrients, an increase in hydrophobicity, and a decrease in pH were recorded. In addition, on one hand, a sharp decline of fungal diversity in soil occurred in association with C. gambosa colonization. On the other hand, the bacterial community showed a variable taxon-specific response, with taxa within Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria being able to thrive in association with C. gambosa.

Background: The loss of arm function is a common and disabling outcome after stroke. Robot-assisted upper limb (UL) training may improve outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of robot-assisted training using end-effector and exoskeleton robots on UL function following a stroke in real-life clinical practice. Methods: A total of 105 patients affected by a first-ever supratentorial stroke were enrolled in 18 neurorehabilitation centers and treated with electromechanically assisted arm training as an add-on to conventional therapy. Both interventions provided either an exoskeleton or an end-effector device (as per clinical practice) and consisted of 20 sessions (3/5 times per week, 6–8 weeks). Patients were assessed by validated UL scales at baseline (T0), post-treatment (T1), and at three-month follow-up (T2). The primary outcome was the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for the upper extremity (FMA-UE). Results: FMA-UE improved at T1 by 6 points on average in the end-effector group and 11 points on average in the exoskeleton group (p &lt, 0.0001). Exoskeletons were more effective in the subacute phase, whereas the end-effectors were more effective in the chronic phase (p &lt, 0.0001). Conclusions: robot-assisted training might help improve UL function in stroke patients as an add-on treatment in both subacute and chronic stages. Pragmatic and highmethodological studies are needed to confirm the showed effectiveness of the exoskeleton and end-effector devices.

The capacity to actively release genetic material into the extracellular environment has been reported for bacteria, archaea, fungi, and in general, for microbial communities, but it is also described in the context of multicellular organisms, animals and plants. This material is often present in matrices that locate outside the cells. Extracellular matrices have important roles in defense response and disease in microbes, animal and plants cells, appearing as barrier against pathogen invasion or for their recognition. Specifically, neutrophils extracellular traps (NETs) in animals and root extracellular traps (RETs) in plants, are recognized to be important players in immunity. A growing amount of evidence revealed that the extracellular DNA, in these contexts, plays an active role in the defense action. Moreover, the protective role of extracellular DNA against antimicrobials and mechanical stress also appears to be confirmed in bacterial biofilms. In parallel, recent efforts highlighted different roles of self (homologous) and non-self (heterologous) extracellular DNA, paving the way to discussions on its role as a “Damage-associated molecular pattern” (DAMP). We here provide an evolutionary overview on extracellular DNA in extracellular matrices like RETs, NETs, and microbial biofilms, discussing on its roles and inferring on possible novel functionalities.

Italy is among the European countries with the greatest plant diversity due to both a great environmental heterogeneity and a long history of man–environment interactions. Trait-based approaches to ecological studies have developed greatly over recent decades worldwide, although several issues concerning the relationships between plant functional traits and the environment still lack sufficient empirical evaluation. To draw insights on the association between plant functional traits and direct and indirect human and natural pressures on the environmental drivers, this article summarizes the existing knowledge on this topic by reviewing the results of studies performed in Italy adopting a functional trait approach on vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens. Although we recorded trait measurements for 1418 taxa, our review highlighted some major gaps in plant traits knowledge: Mediterranean ecosystems are poorly represented; traits related to belowground organs are still overlooked; traits measurements for bryophytes and lichens are lacking. Finally, intraspecific variation has been little studied at community level so far. We conclude by highlighting the need for approaches evaluating trait–environment relationship at large spatial and temporal scales and the need of a more effective contribution to online databases to tie more firmly Italian researchers to international scientific networks on plant traits.

Question: In the fall 2018 we observed an atypical pattern with concentric belts of green, yellow, and brown vegetation. What are the causes of the pattern? Localized water depletion, soil spatial heterogeneity and the activity of pathogenic organisms were tested as alternative hypotheses. Location: Banks of a water reservoir, Alento basin in south Italy (40°19′04.50″ N; 15°06′45.35″ E). Methods: Belts were monitored for floristic composition and plant health status. In each zone, 17 soil parameters were analysed (soil texture, pH, electrical conductivity, limestone content, organic C, Olsen P, total N, C/N ratio, cations exchange capacity, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn). Soil moisture was monitored by soil probes, positioned at 10 cm depth. The incidence of pathogens and parasitic plants was visually estimated. Finally, model simulations were carried out to explore the interactions between biotic and abiotic factors in the formation of the belts. Results: The vegetation survey revealed that the green belt was characterized by a monospecific stand of Xanthium italicum with a plant density >190 individuals per m2. All plants were healthy. In the yellow belt, instead, Xanthium italicum was attacked by the parasitic plant Cuscuta campestris with an incidence >70%. In the brown belt all Xanthium italicum was still standing but dead, with an incidence of Cuscuta campestris attack >94%. No differences in soil chemistry were recorded in the three belts, while soil moisture was slightly lower in the green belt, likely as a result of a higher evapotranspiration rate. The modelling simulation well reproduced the banded vegetation, supporting the role of the parasitic plant in the formation of the pattern. Conclusions: By combining extensive field measurements with detailed modelling work, we revealed, for the first time, the primary role of a parasitic plant in the formation of a regular and ephemeral vegetation pattern.

Introduction: Various anatomical defects predispose patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) to develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) has increased the survival of patients with severe CDHs. The aim of this study was to study GERD in patients who underwent FETO. Materials and Methods: We included patients with CDH treated with or without FETO (“FETO” and “no-FETO” group, respectively) from 2013 to 2016. Data on gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW), initial observed/expected lung to head ratio (O/E LHR), final O/E LHR, duration of ventilation and hospitalization, maximal tracheal diameter, and pulmonary volume were collected. All patients underwent pH-metry after 1 year of life, and the results were compared between groups and correlated to risk factors. Results: Thirty-two patients were included in the study: 10 FETO and 22 no-FETO. No significant differences were observed in the pH-metric results of the two groups. No correlation was found between GA, BW, initial O/E LHR, maximal tracheal diameter, pulmonary volume, and pH-metric results. pH-metric results were correlated with the total duration of ventilation (R = 0.5, p = 0.003) and of hospitalization (R = 0.54, p = 0.001). Gastric herniation is associated with the worse pH-metric result. Conclusions: The FETO procedure does not seem to represent an independent risk factor for GERD. However, patients with the most severe CDH have the worst GERD.

Interactions between plants and soil affect plant–plant interactions and community composition by modifying soils conditions in plant-soil feedback, where associated microbes have the most crucial role. Both arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and microbial seed endophytes have been demonstrated to influence, directly or indirectly, biotic or abiotic soil properties, thus affecting subsequent plant growth, and community structure. However, little is known about how plant endophyte communities, individually or in interaction with AMF, affect plant-soil feedback processes. Here, we investigated, through a manipulative experiment, the behavior of endophyte-free and endophyte-associated Trifolium repens plants grown in soils previously conditioned by conspecific endophyte-free and endophyte-associated plants, inoculated or not by Rhizophagus intraradices. Furthermore, we identified microbial endophytes directly from the inner tissues of seeds by high-throughput sequencing, to compare seed fungal and bacterial endophyte composition. Results demonstrated that the outcome of simultaneous occurrence of seed endophytes and AMF on plant behavior depended on matching the endophytic status, i.e., either the presence or absence of seed microbial endophytes, of the conditioning and response phase. Seed fungal endophytes generated strong conspecific negative feedback, while seed bacterial endophytes proved to shift the feedback from negative to positive. Moreover, the simultaneous occurrence of both seed endophytes with AMF could either generate or expand negative plant-soil feedback effects. Our results show that seed and root symbionts can play a significant role on setting conspecific plant-soil feedback.

The use of wireless technologies in the field of agriculture, or so-called smart or precision agriculture, is considered as one of the main efforts applied nowadays to multiply the food production on earth. However, wireless sensor network (WSN) technology is still at its early development stage and its application in agriculture and food industry is still rare due to the lack of farmers&rsquo, awareness and outreach about the matter. This paper presents a new agro-sensor named AgriLogger with an aim to collect, store for long periods and transmit agrometeorological data represented by temperature and relative humidity in remote areas hard to reach and not served by telecommunication networks. The sensor exhibits long battery life, in the order of 10 years, thanks to low consumption technologies and to hardware sleep/wake up approach. It can be remotely placed on preselected sites through a customized drone. This latter, equipped with a dedicated payload, can then return on the sites where sensors have been placed, and, while hovering, wakes up the single devices and uploads their collected data through local wireless network. Field tests have demonstrated that the sensor, after being placed manually in two different positions, inside and outside a vineyard canopy, is able to collect and store successfully agrometeorological data like temperature and relative humidity. Moreover, the use of a drone potentially allows the collection of data from remote areas and, therefore, is able to provide a periodical monitoring of agro-ecological conditions.

There is a current concern that the capacity of urban forests to recover from the effects of climate change may be diminishing. New management options are needed so that they can continue to provide ecosystem services to local communities. After a windstorm occurred on June 2014 pre- and post-disturbance stand conditions (years 2010 and 2015, respectively) of the historical old-growth holm oak forest of Parco Gussone were analysed by combining ground- and satellite-based methodologies. Results highlighted that Parco Gussone was primarily valued for its historical importance and, despite the phytosanitary conditions of the trees, no silvicultural treatments were made since 1986, most probably due to conflicts arisen between different stakeholders. Therefore in 2014, the windstorm damaged 406 trees (8.1% of the total aboveground forest dry biomass) and it was stand-replacing on 1.53 ha (9.3 % of the total forest area). Windthrows, heterogeneously distributed and unequally sized (103 canopy gap ranging between ∼6 to 1632 m2), caused, overall, a significant reduction of LAI (∼19%). The presence of large gaps promoted the invasion of non-native herbaceous species whereas native species of the shrubs and herbaceous layers were favoured when felled trees were left on the ground or removed mechanically during harvest, respectively. In this context, urban forests should be considered as ‘complex adaptive systems’, therefore natural processes can be simulated by applying a ‘close-to-nature’ silviculture (e.g. by opening small gaps), vulnerability assessed (e.g. using a tree-by-tree VTA), biodiversity and ecological resilience improved and short- and long term disturbance effects evaluated (e.g. analysis of disturbance attributes and stand dynamics) so that specific conservation goals can be adapted to a specific landscape and biotic community. By implementing and applying the proposed guidelines in urban forest planning, we are confident that the resilience of those Mediterranean urban forest ecosystems could be effectively restored and improved.

Species coexistence in grasslands is regulated by several environmental factors and interactions with the soil microbial community. Here, the development of the Basidiomycetes fungus Agaricus arvensis, forming fairy rings, in a species-rich Mediterranean grassland, is described. Effects of the mycelial front on plants, fungi and bacteria were assessed by vegetation survey and next generation sequencing approaches. Our results showed a fungal-dependent shift in the community structure operated by a wave-like spread of fairy rings that decreased plant, fungal and bacterial diversity, indicating a detrimental effect of fairy rings on most species. The fairy rings induced successional processes in plants that enhanced the replacement of a community dominated by perennial plants with short-living and fast-growing plant species. In parallel, fungal and bacterial communities showed evident differences in species composition with several taxa associated within distinct sampling zone across the fairy rings. Notably, bacteria belonging to the Burkholderia genus and fungi of the genus Trichoderma increased in response to the advancing mycelium of A. arvensis. The profound changes in community composition and the overall increase in taxa diversity at ecosystemic scale suggest that fairy ring-forming fungi may act as ecosystem engineer species in Mediterranean grasslands.

Study design Prospective, quasi-experimental study, pre- and post-design, single arm study. Litter decomposition mobilizes nutrients that sustain ecosystem productivity, but decomposition by‐products may also hamper root proliferation by phytotoxicity. The aim of this study was to assess the litter substrate preferences of tropical tree seedlings in relation to litter chemical traits. We characterized 44 litter types (11 species at four decomposition ages; 0, 30, 90 and 180 days) for nutrients (N, P, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Fe and Zn) and proximate chemical parameters (cellulose, extractive, lignin and C) and tested the effect of such litter materials on seedling root growth of Albizia procera, Dalbergia sissoo and Terminalia arjuna. Albizia procera root growth was inhibited by all litter types and ages, including conspecific materials, while different heterospecific litters had inhibitory or stimulatory effect on D. sissoo and T. arjuna root growth, compared to the control. Interestingly, inhibitory and stimulatory effects of heterospecific litters significantly changed with litter age, although with no clear‐cut pattern among target species and litter species and age, while conspecific litters consistently inhibited root growth when aged, but not when fresh. Litter nutrient, extractive, C, cellulose and lignin showed no consistent association with root growth of tested plants. Albizia procera root growth was positively associated with Na content and N:P ratio. Dalbergia sissoo root growth was positively associated to C:N and lignin:N ratios, and negatively to K, Na and Zn content. Finally, T. arjuna root was positively associated to cellulose and N:P ratio, but negatively to extractive. We conclude that studied nutrient, cellulose and lignin do not consistently explain the species‐specific response of root of tree seedlings to decomposing litter.

Microbial diversity plays a crucial role in ecosystem processes, including organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling. This research explores the effect of prescribed burning (PB) on soil microbial diversity, as well as biomass and activity in Mediterranean pine plantations. In burned and adjacent unburned plots of Pinus pinea and P. pinaster plantations of Southern Italy protected areas, the fermentation layer and the 5 cm thick layer of mineral soil underneath were sampled at intervals during the first year after PB. The experimental protocol encompassed measurements of total microbial abundance (Cmic and soil DNA), fungal mycelium, fungal fraction of Cmic, microbial activity, bacterial genetic diversity (16S rDNA PCR-DGGE), microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2), and C mineralization rate (CMR), as well as physical and chemical soil properties. PB caused only temporary (up to 3 h&ndash, 32 d) reductions in Cmic, DNA amount, fungal mycelium, respiration, and CMR in the P. pinaster plantation, and had no appreciable negative effect on the microbial community in P. pinea plantation, where fire intensity was lower because of less abundant litter fuel. In either plantation, PB did not generally reduce bacterial genetic diversity (evaluated as band richness, Shannon index, and evenness), thus, also accounting for the fast recovery in microbial growth and activity after high-intensity PB in P. pinaster plantation. While confirming PB as a sustainable practice to reduce wildfire risk, also supported by data on plant community obtained in the same plantations, the results suggest that an integrated analysis of microbial diversity, growth, and activity is essential for an accurate description of PB effects on soil microbial communities.

The production of microalgae represents a large and rapidly expanding market with several applications in the fields of food, pharmaceutics, cosmetics and energy. Microalgae are unicellular photosynthetic aquatic microorganism whose growth is strictly related through complex and non-linear relationship to a few environmental parameters. Among them, temperature, light, pH and nutrient availability are the most important in determining microalgae biomass production and its biochemical quality, which can influence also the nutritive value of the final product. For this reason, monitoring and control such parameters in production plant is crucial for the resulting production. At the same time, the development of mathematical models to simulate the behavior of biological systems has become a major predictive and control tool of production processes where detail of description have to deal with the available computing power and the ease of consulting.In this paper we present a biological model that could be the core of a Decision Support System (DSS) for the plant manager to monitor and control a Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) production plant for the food industry. The DSS is based on a modeling tool that simulates and predicts the biological adaptation and response of microalgae to the variations of these parameters. In the present paper, we want to focus on a new modeling approach chosen to describe the complexity of unicellular biological mechanism focusing on the photo-physiological adaptations, which are influenced by the main factors that can be adjusted at the large scale of functioning of the microalgae production plant, conjugating the microscopic view to the very large-scale one.

The organic matter cycle is one of the most fundamental processes in ecosystems affecting the soil and controlling its functions. The soil complex microbiome is made up of thousands of bacterial and hundreds of fungal strains that coexist on the many different available organic carbon sources. In natural plant communities, freshly fallen leaf-litter and dead roots are subject to decomposition by a complex food-web composed of both microbial saprotrophs and invertebrate detritivores. The litter chemical composition varies dramatically among species in relation to plant life forms (conifer, broadleaf, nitrogen-fixing, graminoid) and, within species, with plant organs (leaf, root, woody tissues). This paper reviews the usefulness of advanced chemical technologies to study the composition of both plant litter and organic amendments, supporting the description of their mechanism of action and attention to their potential applications. First, a critical review is presented on the limitations of C/N and lignin/N ratios, still widely used as basic indicators of litter chemistry. Second, the potential of the solid state 13C-CPMAS NMR is reported as a powerful tool to assess the chemical composition of both litter and organic amendments. Finally, six different study cases are reported to provide evidence of the usefulness of such metabolomic approach for the description of organic matter chemistry aimed to an effective prediction of its impact on soil ecosystem functions.

Unlike vagile organisms, plants perform a wide range of phenotypic responses to cope with environmental stresses. A special case of interaction with external factors is the ability of plants to recognize genetic relatedness of neighbour plants, actually well known as kin recognition. The present work aimed to provide a valuable contribution to the field of kin recognition in plants through a common garden experiment. To avoid bias involved in pot experiments, we perform an experiment in unconstrained root growth conditions comparing the development of coupled kin, non-kin and solitary plants of Xanthium italicum. Biometrics of plants with different genetic relatedness were measured, then architecture and competitive interaction were assessed using the relative interaction index (RII) for above and belowground portions of plants. X. italicum showed different allocation depending on the neighbourhood. Root biomass was declined in plants growing with kin compared to non-kin coupled plants, while plants coupled with kin allocated more shoot than roots compared to solitary plants. RII explains phenotypic response of decreased competition in roots rather than in shoots. Despite high values of RII for the aboveground portion, the architectural analysis of shoot, number, angle and length of branches and roots reveals dramatic but indistinctive change in the structure of plants growing near kin or non kin compared to a solitary plant. These results confirm phenotypic responses of kin recognition in unconstrained environment.

Litter decomposition provides a continuous flow of organic carbon and nutrients that affects plant development and the structure of decomposer communities. Aim of this study was to distinguish the feeding preferences of microbes and plants in relation to litter chemistry. We characterized 36 litter types by 13C-CPMAS NMR spectroscopy and tested these materials on 6 bacteria, 6 fungi, and 14 target plants. Undecomposed litter acted as a carbon source for most of the saprophytic microbes, although with a large variability across litter types, severely inhibiting root growth. An opposite response was found for aged litter that largely inhibited microbial growth, but had neutral or stimulatory effects on root proliferation. 13C-CPMAS NMR revealed that restricted resonance intervals within the alkyl C, methoxyl C, O-alkyl C and di-O-alkyl C spectral regions are crucial for understanding litter effects. Root growth, in contrast to microbes, was negatively affected by labile C sources but positively associated with signals related to plant tissue lignification. Our study showed that plant litter has specific and contrasting effects on bacteria, fungi and higher plants, highlighting that, in order to understand the effects of plant detritus on ecosystem structure and functionality, different microbial food web components should be simultaneously investigated.

Background During the last two decades, extensive interaction between clinicians and engineers has led to the development of systems that stimulate neural plasticity to optimize motor recovery after neurological lesions. This has resulted in the expansion of the field of robotics for rehabilitation. Studies in patients with stroke-related upper-limb paresis have shown that robotic rehabilitation can improve motor capacity. However, few other applications have been evaluated (e.g. tremor, peripheral nerve injuries or other neurological diseases). Purpose This paper presents an overview of the current use of upper limb robotic systems for neurorehabilitation, and highlights the rationale behind their use for the assessment and treatment of common neurological disorders. Conclusions Rehabilitation robots are little integrated in clinical practice, except after stroke. Although few studies have been carried out to evaluate their effectiveness, evidence from the neurosciences and indications from pilot studies suggests that upper limb robotic rehabilitation can be applied safely in various other neurological conditions. Rehabilitation robots provide an intensity, quality and dose of treatment that exceeds therapist-mediated rehabilitation. Moreover, the use of force fields, multi-sensory environments, feedback etc. renders such rehabilitation engaging and motivating. Future studies should evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation robots in neurological pathologies other than stroke.

BACKGROUND Until now studies report inconclusive results as regards the effectiveness of exclusive use of robot-assisted training and clinical indications in stroke patients. OBJECTIVE To evaluate if the only robot-assisted end-effector-based gait training can be feasible in chronic stroke subjects in terms of gait recovery. METHODS Five rehabilitation centers participated and one hundred chronic post-stroke patients were recruited. The increasing availability of phylogenetic information facilitates the use of evolutionary methods in community ecology to reveal the importance of evolution in the species assembly process. However, while several methods have been applied to a wide range of communities across different spatial scales with the purpose of detecting non-random phylogenetic patterns, the spatial aspects of phylogenetic community structure have received far less attention. Accordingly, the question for this study is: can point pattern analysis be used for revealing the phylogenetic structure of multi-species assemblages? We introduce a new individual-centered procedure for analyzing the scale-dependent phylogenetic structure of multi-species point patterns based on digitized field data. The method uses nested circular plots with increasing radii drawn around each individual plant and calculates the mean phylogenetic distance between the focal individual and all individuals located in the circular ring delimited by two successive radii. This scale-dependent value is then averaged over all individuals of the same species and the observed mean is compared to a null expectation with permutation procedures. The method detects particular radius values at which the point pattern of a single species exhibits maximum deviation from the expectation towards either phylogenetic aggregation or segregation. Its performance is illustrated using data from a grassland community in Hungary and simulated point patterns. The proposed method can be extended to virtually any distance function for species pairs, such as functional distances.

Telemedicine is a medical application of advanced technology to disease management. This modality may provide benefits also to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Different devices and systems are used. The legal problems associated with telemedicine are still controversial. Economic advantages for healthcare systems, though potentially high, are still poorly investigated. A European Respiratory Society Task Force has defined indications, follow-up, equipment, facilities, legal and economic issues of tele-monitoring of COPD patients including those undergoing home mechanical ventilation. Key points The costs of care assistance in chronic disease patients are dramatically increasing. Telemedicine may be a very useful application of information and communication technologies in high-quality healthcare services. Many remote health monitoring systems are available, ensuring safety, feasibility, effectiveness, sustainability and flexibility to face different patients’ needs. The legal problems associated with telemedicine are still controversial. National and European Union governments should develop guidelines and ethical, legal, regulatory, technical, administrative standards for remote medicine. The economic advantages, if any, of this new approach must be compared to a “gold standard” of homecare that is very variable among different European countries and within each European country. The efficacy of respiratory disease telemedicine projects is promising (i.e. to tailor therapeutic intervention; to avoid useless hospital and emergency department admissions, and reduce general practitioner and specialist visits; and to involve the patients and their families). Different programmes based on specific and local situations, and on specific diseases and levels of severity with a high level of flexibility should be utilised. A European Respiratory Society Task Force produced a statement on commonly accepted clinical criteria for indications, follow-up, equipment, facilities, legal and economic issues also of telemonitoring of ventilator-dependent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Biomechanical models of the musculoskeletal systems are commonly used to estimate internal structural loads and muscle activation during body movements. Several musculoskeletal models developed in the last decade are used to evaluate and analyse upper limb movements in normal conditions. However only few studies are able to predict the influence of abnormal movements following injuries are available so far. In this study an upper limb biomechanical model which includes strain-adjustable ligaments of the acromioclavicular joint was developed by using the OpenSim software. The model including seven degrees of freedom is able to evaluate the movements of the shoulder, elbow and wrist. The ligaments strain can be adjusted in order to simulate different types of Rockwood acromioclavicular dislocation. Upper limb movements recorded from ten healthy subjects are analyzed using this model. Shoulder range of motion resulted from the proposed model are consistent with the literature, suggesting that the upper limb model built using OpenSim software can be used for motion analysis and evaluation for the further application.

Participants in Group A (n = 19) underwent 20 sessions of Robot-Assisted Gait Training (RAGT) on a treadmill followed by 20 sessions of FES during Overground Gait (FES-OG). Participants in Group B (n = 17) received 20 sessions of FES-cycling followed by 20 sessions of overground RAGT. The main outcome measures were: WISCI-II, 10MWT, 6MWT, TUG and SCIM-II.36 persons completed the study with no complications; only 4 of the 16 dropped out because of mild complications during the RAGT. Participants in Group A exhibited significant improvements in WISCI-II, 10MWT, 6MWT and TUG (p 0.05), while those in Group B did not significantly improve their gait function but their walking velocity and resistance with the assistance of the robotic exoskeleton increased. SCIM-II scores increased followed therapy only in Group A.Persons affected by SCI can safely experience their walking function with RAGT and FES therapy; only few mild complications were observed. Our data provides initial evidence of the potential value of these technologies, especially in persons with SCI having LEMS 10.

This study aims to analyse the long-term effects (6 months follow-up) of upper limb Robot-assisted Therapy (RT) compared to Traditional physical Therapy (TT), in subacute stroke patients. Although the literature on upper-limb rehabilitation with robots shows increasing evidence of its effectiveness in stroke survivors, the length of time for which the re-learned motor abilities could be maintained is still understudied. A randomized controlled follow-up study was conducted on 48 subacute stroke patients who performed the upper-limb therapy using a planar end-effector robotic system (Experimental Group-EG) or TT (Control Group-CG). The clinical assessments were collected at T0 (baseline), T1 (end of treatment) and T2 (6 months follow-up): Upper Limb part of Fugl-Meyer assessment (FM-UL), total passive Range Of Motion (pROM), Modified Ashworth Scale Shoulder (MAS-S) and Elbow (MAS-E). At T1, the intra-group analysis showed significant gain of FM-UL in both EG and CG, while significant improvement in MAS-S, MAS-E, and pROM were found in the EG only. At T2, significant increase in MAS-S were revealed only in the CG. In FM-UL, pROM and MAS-E the improvements obtained at the end of treatment seem to be maintained at 6 months follow-up in both groups. The inter-groups analysis of FM-UL values at T1 and T2 demonstrated significant differences in favour of EG. In conclusion, upper limb Robot-assisted Therapy may lead a greater reduction of motor impairment in subacute stroke patients compared to Traditional Therapy. The gains observed at the end of treatment persisted over time. No serious adverse events related to the study occurred.

Both transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and wrist robot-assisted training have demonstrated to be promising approaches for stroke rehabilitation. However, the effects of the combination of the two treatments in subacute stroke patients are not clear yet. To investigate the effectiveness of combining tDCS and wrist robot-assisted rehabilitation in subacute stroke patients in comparison with the wrist robotic training only, a single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial was performed with 40 subacute stroke patients (25 ± 7 days from stroke onset time). Patients were randomly assigned to experimental group (EG, ${n} =20$ ) where patients receive real tDCS [2 mA, 20 min, and the anodal electrode on the primary motor cortex—M1—area of the affected hemisphere (C3/C4 in the 10–20 EEG system and the cathodal electrode on the contralateral orbit bone)] or control group (CG, ${n} =20$ ) where patients receive sham tDCS (5 s) during wrist robotic rehabilitation training. The effects of the treatment were evaluated by means of the upper extremity, shoulder-elbow, and wrist subsections of the Fugl–Meyer assessment scale, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motricity Index and Box and Block Test together with kinematic parameters. One out of 20 patients in the CG did not complete the treatment. All the clinical outcome measures except the Modified Ashworth Scale showed a significant increase after the treatment in both groups. However, no significant difference in the average changes after treatment between groups was observed. The movement velocity and smoothness showed significant increases after the training, even though no significant difference between groups was observed. The combination of wrist robot-assisted training and tDCS did not show additional effects in comparison with wrist robot-assisted training only in subacute stroke patients. The negative results found in this paper are specific for the specific intervention. The timing of delivering the tDCS and the robot-assisted therapy has to be deeply investigated to enhance the effectiveness of the training.

Background. Upper limb robot-assisted therapy (RT) provides intensive, repetitive, and task-specific treatment, and its efficacy for stroke survivors is well established in literature. Biomechanical data from robotic devices has been widely employed for patient’s assessment, but rarely it has been analysed for tracking patient progress during RT. The goal of this retrospective study is to analyse built-in kinematic data registered by a planar end-effector robot for assessing the time course of motor recovery and patient’s workspace exploration skills. A comparison of subjects having mild and severe motor impairment has been also conducted. For that purpose, kinematic data recorded by a planar end-effector robot have been processed for investigating how motor performance in executing point-to-point trajectories with different directions changes during RT.Methods. Observational retrospective study of 68 subacute stroke patients who conducted 20 daily sessions of upper limb RT with the InMotion 2.0 (Bionik Laboratories, USA): planar point-to-point reaching tasks with an “assist as needed” strategy. The following kinematic parameters (KPs) were computed for each subject and for each point-to-point trajectory executed during RT: movement accuracy, movement speed, number of peak speed, and task completion time. The Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used with clinical outcomes. the Friedman test and post hoc Conover’s test (Bonferroni’s correction) were applied to KPs. A secondary data analysis has been conducted by comparing patients having different severities of motor impairment. The level of significance was set atpvalue < 0.05.Results. At the RT onset, the movements were less accurate and smoothed, and showed higher times of execution than those executed at the end of treatment. The analysis of the time course of KPs highlighted that RT seems to improve the motor function mainly in the first sessions of treatment: most KPs show significant intersession differences during the first 5/10 sessions. Afterwards, no further significant variations occurred. The ability to perform movements away from the body and from the hemiparetic side remains more challenging. The results obtained from the data stratification show significant differences between subjects with mild and severe motor impairment.Conclusion. Significant improvements in motor performance were registered during the time course of upper limb RT in subacute stroke patients. The outcomes depend on movement direction and motor impairment and pave the way to optimize healthcare resources and to design patient-tailored rehabilitative protocols.

Ecosystems may be characterized by a complex dynamical behaviour where external disturbances and/or internal perturbations may trigger sudden/irreversible changes, called catastrophic shifts. Simple mathematical models in the form of ordinary and/or partial differential equations have been proposed to approximate in a qualitatively manner the observed complex phenomena, where catastrophic shifts are determined by bifurcation points. In this work, we show that in ecosystems, gradual/smooth changes may be transformed in sudden/catastrophic shifts as a consequence of codimension-2 bifurcations. We stress the importance of using the full arsenal of numerical bifurcation theory to systematically identify and characterize criticalities in ecological models in the 2D parameter space. For our demonstrations, we revisit the analysis of a simple model of a forest-grassland mosaic ecosystem constructing the 2D bifurcation diagram with respect to the impact of human influence and that of natural causes. Our numerical analysis reveals that this simple model is able to approximate both abrupt (catastrophic) and smooth transitions as the system undergoes Bautin bifurcations.

Microbial succession over decomposing litter is controlled by biotic interactions, dispersal limitation, grazing pressure, and substrate chemical changes. Recent evidence suggests that the changes in litter chemistry and microbiome during decomposition are interdependent. However, most previous studies separately addressed the microbial successional dynamics or the molecular changes of decomposing litter. Here, we combined litter chemical characterization by 13C NMR spectroscopy with next generation sequencing to compare leaf litter chemistry and microbiome dynamics using 30 litter types, either fresh or decomposed for 30 and 180 days. We observed a decrease of cellulose and C/N ratio during decomposition, while lignin content and lignin/N ratio showed the opposite pattern. 13C NMR revealed significant chemical changes as microbial decomposition was proceeding, with a decrease in O-alkyl C and an increase in alkyl C and methoxyl C relative abundances. Overall, bacterial and eukaryotic taxonomical richness increased with litter age. Among Bacteria, Proteobacteria dominated all undecomposed litters but this group was progressively replaced by members of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes. Nitrogen-fixing genera such as Beijerinckia and Rhizobium occurred both in undecomposed as well as in aged litters. Among Eukarya, fungi belonging to the Ascomycota phylum were dominant in undecomposed litter with the typical phyllospheric genus Aureobasidium. In aged litters, phyllospheric species were replaced by zygomycetes and other ascomycetous and basidiomycetous fungi. Our analysis of decomposing litter highlighted an unprecedented, widespread occurrence of protists belonging to the Amebozoa and Cercozoa. Correlation network analysis showed that microbial communities are non-randomly structured, showing strikingly distinct composition in relation to litter chemistry. Our data demonstrate that the importance of litter chemistry in shaping microbial community structure increased during the decomposition process, being of little importance for freshly fallen leaves.

Wound closure in plant stems (after either fire or mechanical damage) is a complex, multi-scale process that involves the formation of a callous tissue (callus lips) responsible for cell proliferation and overgrowth at the injury edges, resulting in coverage of the scarred tissue. Investigating such phenomena, it is difficult to discriminate between cell-specific growth responses, associated with physiological adaptations, and cell proliferation reactions emerging from specific cambium dynamics due to changes in mechanical constrains. In particular, the effects of cell-cell mechanical interactions on the wound closure process have never been investigated. To understand to what extent callus lip formation depends on the intra-tissue mechanical balance of forces, we built a simplified individual-based model (IBM) of cell division and differentiation in a generic woody tissue. Despite its simplified physiological assumptions, the model was capable to simulate callus hyperproliferation and wound healing as an emergent property of the mechanical interactions between individual cells. The model output suggests that the existence of a scar alone does constrain the growth trajectories of the remaining proliferating cells around the injury, thus resulting in the wound closure, ultimately engulfing the damaged tissue in the growing stem.

Plant litter decomposition is a crucial process of nutrient cycling within ecosystems. However, many studies have shown that, apart from its several beneficial effects, organic matter decomposition can be disadvantageous to seed germination, seedling growth, and physiological activity of plants. Litter decomposition was reported to affect both plants and their associated soil microbial communities. The aim of this work was to test the relationships between seed-associated endophytic fungi on the either positive or negative plant’s response to different litter types. Leaf material of four species was collected and used in a decomposition experiment inside a growth chamber for 120 days. The plant growth experiment was set in a greenhouse using Trifolium repens and Triticum durum with and without their associated endophytic fungi in the presence of the different litter species at two decay levels (fresh litter and after 120 days of decomposition). Results demonstrated that fresh litter exerted a strong inhibition effect on the plant total biomass when compared to decomposed litter. Moreover, seed-associated endophytic fungi enhanced the inhibitory effect of litter in the observed experimental conditions. The removal of seed-associated endophytic fungi improved the capacity of tested plants to resist to litter inhibitory effect.

In the Mediterranean basin wildfires are becoming increasingly important in scientific and operative context, due to the extent of the burned areas in the last decades, and to the resulting large ecological and socio-economic impacts. Damages assessment, interventions planning to restore burned areas and future fire risks prevention, are some of the implications that affect post-fire landscape management. Vesuvius is known all around the world for its volcanic nature, cultural geological and landscape heritage. In summer 2017, a large wildfire burned about 3.200 ha of forest stands along the volcano slopes. Very-high and high fires severity effects were observed on 374 and 2147 ha, respectively; in both cases tree mortality exceeded 80%. The present work provides results of wildfire impacts assessment, in order to support landscape restoration planning. The framework entails the identification of intervention priority areas with respect to fire severity, safety, and ecosystem services. Moreover, an assessment of environmental damages during the early post-fire stages was conducted in terms of Ecosystem services (ESs) loss. Spatial MultiCriteria Decision Analysis (ILWIS module) with support of panel of experts allowed the identification of priority restoration. These areas were overlapped with the fire severity map in order to identify the most critical areas i.e., land surfaces with high degree of change between pre- and post-fire conditions. Intervention priority areas have been identified by overlapping fire severity map with ESs map. Finally, the ESs monetary value loss was assessed by means of GIS-based approach. About 400 ha, 5% of Vesuvius National Park total area, have been classified as priority intervention areas. For all these areas, the loss of about 50% of the ecosystem services monetary value has been calculated. This work, carried out in cooperation with agro-forestry landscape planners, foresters, agronomists, botanists and ecologists, highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in landscape management and restoration. Indeed, the definition of priority intervention areas becomes strategic in allocating monetary resources to restore burned areas.

The work reintegration following shoulder biomechanical overload illness is a multidimensional process, especially for those tasks requiring strength, movement control and arm dexterity. Currently different robotic devices used for upper limb rehabilitation are available on the market, but these devices are not based on activities focused on the work reintegration. Furthermore, the rehabilitation programmes aimed to the work reintegration are insufficiently focused on the recovery of the necessary skills for the re-employment.

The use of robotic systems during the rehabilitation of spinal cord injured patients can contribute to achieve significant outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of an overground robot-assisted gait training in complete spinal cord injured patients. Sixteen SCI patients (mean age: 35.3 ± 10.3 yrs) underwent 20 robot-assisted gait training sessions based on an overground robotic exoskeleton.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the different timing of upper limb motor recovery in subacute and chronic stroke patients by using kinematic parameters combined with clinical evaluations.
