Abstract

Green infrastructure can release oxygen, and capture particulate matter (PM), which can improve urban air quality and heat islands. This study aims to develop a green curtain to reduce PM 2.5 through three-dimensional greening with a low preparation cost, low maintenance cost, high efficiency, and readily replaceable types. In this study, a green curtain system (GCS) was installed on a balcony with three plants, Chlorophytum comosum , Nephrolepis exaltata , and Nephrolepis pendula (Raddi) J. Sm, Another balcony without GCS was used as a control group for the study. The experiment demonstrated the efficacy of Greening Curtain Systems (GCS) on balconies in reducing PM 2.5 exceedance time, particularly with 60 pots containing a mix of three plants, where Chlorophytum comosum showed notable effectiveness as a single protective plant. Leaf capture efficiency remained relatively unchanged even after 17 days without washing, attributed to the humidity of winter evenings and the evapotranspiration effect of the plants. Additionally, a health risk assessment, employing an attributable risk approach, was conducted to validate the effectiveness of PM protection measures in lowering occupants' health risks. Utilizing data on the correlation between all-cause mortality risk in individuals aged 65 and above and considering the delayed impact of atmospheric factors on human health, we employed a delayed nonlinear model to explore the exposure-response relationship. The results revealed that GCS successfully reduced the duration of high PM 2.5 concentration during air pollution episodes by 15–18 μg/m3, thereby mitigating potential health risks associated with successive air pollution episodes. • We proposed a PM 2.5 capturing GCS with a low-cost and low-maintenance perspective. • Tree plant species were studied via field measurement for validation. • The performance duration without leave washing was found via field measurement. • The protective effect of health risks during air pollution events was evaluated. Abstract

Literature has suggested association between damp environments, microbial exposure, and higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms and diseases. The study began by evaluating the airborne fungal concentrations at urban and suburban areas of a typical metropolitan city in southern Taiwan for the estimation of related health risks. A group of representative homes, based on the housing characteristics questionnaires completed earlier, were selected from two parts of the city; urban and suburban. Burkard sampler (BURKARD, Rickmansworth, England) was used to collect airborne fungi onto agar plates with malt-extract. After incubation and identification, concentrations of airborne fungi were calculated as CFU/m3. The geometric mean (GM) concentration for indoors was 8946 (4372-18,306) CFU/m3 in winter and 4381 (1605-11,956) in summer. For outdoors, it was 11,464 (5767-22,788) CFU/m3 in winter and 4689 (1895-11,603) in summer. In summer, the total fungal concentration, both indoors and outdoors of suburban homes, were significantly higher than those of urban homes. The dominant fungi contributing to such a difference were indoor Cladosporium spp. and outdoor Penicillium spp. (P < 0.01). The indoor/outdoor ratio (I/O) was similar in two areas except for Penicillium spp. in winter and Aspergillus spp. in summer; both higher in the suburban area. Significantly higher levels of airborne fungi were observed in this region than those seen in northern Taiwan or other parts of the world. Future investigations are needed to further examine the effects of these exposures on the related health problems.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the association between the length of use of feeding bottles or pacifiers during childhood and the prevalence of respiratory and allergic morbidities. A large-scale questionnaire survey was performed in day care centers and kindergartens (with children's ages ranging from 2 to 7 years) in southern Taiwan, and a total of 14,862 questionnaires completed by parents were finally recruited for data analysis. Effects of using feeding bottles on children's wheezing/asthma (adjusted OR: 1.05, 95% CI 1.00-1.09), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR: 1.04, 95% CI 1.00-1.08), and eczema (adjusted OR: 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.2) were found. Moreover, significant dose-dependent relationships were further established after an adjustment for confounders was performed that included children's ages, gender, gestational age, birth weight, length of breastfeeding, the age when first given infant formula or complementary foods, family history, parental educational levels, and smoking status, as well as the problem of indoor water damage. This study was the first to reveal the potential risk of using plastic consumer products such as feeding bottles on the reported health status of preschool children in Asian countries.

Abstract

Background: Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may promote hepatic tumorgenesis through low-grade inflammation. Therefore, we assessed the association of long-term exposure levels of PM2.5 and subsequent risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and investigated the mediation effect of inflammation as represented by alanine aminotransferase (ALT) on this association.Methods: Between 1991 and 1992, we recruited 23 820 participants in Taiwan with no history of HCC. Case patients of HCC were ascertained through computerized data linkage with the National Cancer Registry and death certification systems. Participants' exposures to PM2.5 were based on a four-year average retrieved from stationary monitoring sites. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association between PM2.5 exposure and HCC incidence. Mediation effects of ALT on PM2.5-associated HCC incidence were estimated.Results: A total of 464 HCC cases were newly diagnosed with a median follow-up of 16.9 years. Statistically significantly increasing trends between PM2.5 exposures and ALT were observed on the Main Island and Penghu Islets. The adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for HCC on the Penghu Islets was 1.22 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02 to 1.47) per PM2.5 interquartile range (IQR) increment (0.73 µg/m(3)) exposure. We also found a positive association between PM2.5 exposure (per IQR increment, 13.1 µg/m(3)) and HCC incidence on the Main Island. Furthermore, ALT had a statistically significant mediation effect on PM2.5-associated HCC incidence (HR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.02 to1.52 on the Main Island; HR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.07 on the Penghu Islets) per PM2.5 IQR increment.Conclusions: Long-term PM2.5 exposure increased the risk for liver cancer, and chronic inflammation of the liver may underlie the pathogenesis.
