105. Mapping the field of microalgae CO2 sequestration: a bibliometric analysis.

Abstract

Microalgae CO2 sequestration has gained considerable attention in the last three decades as a promising technology to slow global warming caused by CO2 emissions. To provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of the research status, hot spots, and frontiers of CO2 fixation by microalgae, a bibliometric approach was recently chosen for review. In this study, 1561 articles (1991–2022) from the Web of Science (WOS) on microalgae CO2 sequestration were screened. A knowledge map of the domain was presented using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. It visually demonstrates the most productive journals (Bioresource Technology), countries (China and USA), funding sources, and top contributors (Cheng J, Chang JS, and their team) in the field of CO2 sequestration by microalgae. The analysis also revealed that research hotspots changed over time and that recent research has focused heavily on improving carbon sequestration efficiency. Finally, commercialization of carbon fixation by microalgae is a key hurdle, and supports from other disciplines could improve carbon sequestration efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

129. Spatially explicit global gross domestic product (GDP) data set consistent with the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways

Abstract

The increasing demand of ScenarioMIP is calling for GDP projections of high resolution for the future Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) in both socioeconomic development and in climate change of adaption and mitigation research. While to date the global GDP projections for five SSPs are mainly provided at national scales, and the gridded data set are very limited. Meanwhile, the historical GDP can be disaggregated using nighttime light (NTL) images but the results are not open accessed, making it cumbersome in climate change impact and socioeconomic risk assessments across research disciplines. To this end, we produce a set of spatially explicit global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that presents substantial long-term changes of economic activities for both historical period (2005 as representative) and for future projections under all five SSPs with a spatial resolution of 30 arc-seconds. Chinese population in SSP database were first replaced by the projections under the two-children policy implemented since 2016 and then used to spatialize global GDP using NTL images and gridded population together as fixed base map, which outperformed at subnational scales. The GDP data are consistent with projections from the SSPs and are freely available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4350027 (Wang and Sun, 2020). We also provide another set of spatially explicit GDP using the global LandScan population as fixed base map, which is recommended at county or even smaller scales where NTL images are limited. Our results highlight the necessity and availability of using gridded GDP projections with high resolution for scenario-based climate change research and socioeconomic development that are consistent with all five SSPs.

Abstract

Hot and dry extremes have co‐occurred with global warming, causing worse threats than single climate extremes. We analyse the compound hot and dry day (CHDD) and population exposure (Epop) across China based on observations and 11 global climate models (GCMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. The bias‐corrected GCMs, particularly the two‐stage multivariate quantile mapping‐corrected ones, perform better than the raw ones in catching changes in CHDD but they all overestimate CHDD and Epop. More CHDDs occur in the southeast (SE), north (NC) and northwest (NW) China with increasing trends over regions stretching from the northeast (NE) to southwest (SW) China. Despite the declined CHDD, historical Epop has generally increased by the increased population. Future projections in the SSP5‐8.5 experiment indicate an overall increase of CHDD and Epop at 1.5°C warming and an increasing Epop to dangerous CHDD at 2°C warming. SW, NE and the Tibetan Plateau need effective measures of adaptation to reduce sufferings from CHDD under climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

134. Comparative study of multiple heat indices in revisiting summer heat across China based on meteorological observations.

Abstract

Multiple indices have been created to measure hot conditions that may cause discomfort, stress even death to humans. However, distinctions among these indices and their performance in measuring heat remain undisclosed. We conduct a comparative study of multiple heat indices and revisit the spatiotemporal changes in summer heat across China. The maximum temperature-based index, more sensitive to average and maximum temperatures, suggests a larger increasing trend (0.42°C/10a) in heat intensity than those average temperature-based ones which are more sensitive to minimum temperature. The absolute threshold-based heat-day indices are not so applicable as the relative ones in measuring the increasing heat days over the Tibetan Plateau. During 1960–2018, significant (p < 0.05) increasing trends in heat intensity (0.11–0.42°C/10a) and heat day (0.63–2.67 days/10a) are revealed with a jump-like increase after the mid-1990s at the country level. Stronger heat intensity occurs over the southeast and north China with larger increasing trends over the Tibetan Plateau and northwest China. Northern China with larger increasing heat intensity and days should take effective measures of adaptation to reduce suffering from the summer heat. Given differences among multiple indices and the performance over different regions, a rational selection of heat index considering the research subject of interest and regional climatology is highly recommended. 139. Divergent Impacts of Evapotranspiration by Plant CO2Physiological Forcing on the Mean and Variability of Water Availability

Abstract

Vegetation responses to rising atmospheric CO2levels can significantly affect water availability (defined as precipitation minus evapotranspiration (ET)). While this effect has long been recognized and assessed for the mean state, its influence on interannual variability, which is more closely associated with extreme events, has yet to be comprehensively quantified. In this study, our primary focus is to evaluate the impacts of ETby plant physiology (denoted as ETPhy) on the mean and interannual variability of water availability under elevated CO2using multiple CO2sensitivity experiments from the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6. We show that the contribution of vegetation physiological effects to the mean water availability varies among regions, while it consistently contributes to variability by about 33%. Considering CO2physiological effects alone, ETPhyexerts a more significant influence on the mean state than on variability, particularly in humid regions. Consequently, ETPhycontributes less than 5% to the variability of water availability in humid regions under rising CO2, whereas it accounts for about 20% of the mean state. This distinction could be attributed to the different mechanisms governing the mean and variability of ETPhy. Specifically, evaporation from CO2physiological forcing is the most critical contributor to the variability of ETPhyin most regions while showing minimal impacts on the mean state. Our findings identify the divergent effects of ETPhyon the mean state and interannual variability of water availability under elevated CO2, as important in future climate projections. Rising atmospheric CO2concentrations impacts on vegetation physiological processes are expected to change the evapotranspiration (ET) by plant physiology (denoted as ETPhy), allowing for altering the mean and the interannual variability of water availability (defined as precipitation minus ET). Using an ensemble of Earth system model simulations, this study reveals that the impacts of CO2physiological effects on the mean of water availability are region‐specific, but with a nearly consistent contribution to its interannual variability. Combined with the impact of ETPhyon the mean and variability of water availability resulting from CO2physiological forcing, ETPhytypically contributes less than 5% to the variability of water availability in humid regions under rising CO2, whereas it accounts for about 20% of the mean state. This discrepancy could arise from the different mechanisms governing the mean and variability of ETPhy. These results underscore the importance of accounting for the effects of ETPhyin response to increasing CO2in altering the mean and the interannual variability of regional water resources. Abstract

A warmer climate is expected to accelerate the global hydrological cycle, causing more intense precipitation and floods. Despite recent progress in global flood risk assessment, the socioeconomic benefits of flood defenses (i.e., reduction in population/economic exposure) and the residual risk (i.e., residual population/economic exposure) are poorly understood globally and regionally. To address these knowledge gaps, we use the runoff data from a baseline and 11 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) climate models to drive the Catchment‐based Macro‐scale Floodplain model incorporating the latest satellite river width information. From the simulated annual maxima, we use a Gumbel distribution to estimate the river water depth‐flood return period relationship. We independently evaluate flood impacts on population and economy (i.e., gross domestic product) for a range of flood return periods. We estimate the socioeconomic benefits and the corresponding residual risk for the globe and 26 subcontinental regions. The global population (gross domestic product) exposed to flooding is ∼8% (∼7%) per year lower when implementing existing flood protection infrastructure extracted from the FLOod PROtection Standards database. If the current flood defenses were to be unchanged in the future (Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 [RCP4.5] and RCP8.5, i.e., ∼2 to ∼4.3°C above the preindustrial levels), the globe and most of the regions (particularly where developing countries are concentrated) would experience an increase in residual risk. This increase is especially obvious when the gap of climate forcing between RCP8.5 and RCP4.5 widens by the end of the 21st century. We finally evaluate the impact of changed flood defense levels on the socioeconomic benefits and the corresponding residual risk.

142. Constitutive expression of codon optimized Trichoderma reesei TrCel5A in Pichia pastorisusing GAP promoter

Abstract

To address the deficient activity of TrCel5A in naturally secreted cellulase preparation, this study used the GAP promoter to induce constitutive expression of Trichoderma reesei TrCel5A in Pichia pastoris. A recombinant TrCel5A was screened out after gene optimization, synthesis, and expression. The biochemical and enzymatic properties of the new recombinant were characterized. As a result, optimization of shake-flask fermentation of the recombinant was obtained at 28 °C, 2% inoculum volume, an initial pH of 6.0, as well as glycerol and Tween-80 additions of 30 g/L and 6 g/L, respectively. Under the above-optimized conditions, the recombinant produced 14.8 U/mL of the enzyme activity at 96 h of fermentation. To further enhance enzyme production, pilot-scale cultivation was evaluated using 5-L bioreactors. Using high-cell-density fermentation, the recombinant strain increased enzyme activity to 130.4 U/ml and protein content to 2.49 g/L. In addition, the kinetic factors, including Kmand Vmaxvalues for TrCel5A, were detected to be 5.1 mg/mL and 265.9 μmol/(min.mg), respectively. Thus, TrCel5A was effectively expressed in P.pastorisunder the GAP promoter, and it demonstrated its potential in commercially relevant enzyme hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass.
