We investigate the rational solitons of the Kraenkel–Manna–Merle (KMM) system in ferrites via symbolic computation with the ansatz functions technique and logarithmic transformation. The KMM system describes the propagations of the ferromagnetic particles in ferrite materials. Multiwave solitons are reported by using the three-wave technique. Homocentric breathers (HBs) approach is also applied to build new forms of exact solutions. We construct M-shaped solitons and their dynamics are shown via the appropriate values of parameters. Two types of interactions for rational soliton with kink wave are investigated. Additionally, kink cross-rational solitons (KCRSs) and periodic cross-rational solitons (PCRSs) are examined via suitable transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work employs the sub-ODE method to compute new soliton solutions for the component generalization of (2 + 1) -dimensional Schwarz–Kortweg–de Vries (SKdV) equation in shallow water waves. The rational soliton solutions (RSS), Jacobian elliptic function (JEF), periodic solutions (PS), hyperbolic function solutions (HFS), positive solitons, dark soliton solutions (DSS) and bright soliton solutions (BSS) are constructed with this technique. Solitons-like solutions, HFS and trigonometric-function solutions (TFS) are also found as the JEF's parameter m approaches values of 1 and 0, respectively. In this paper, we address a newly nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) in (2 + 1) -dimensions influenced by cubic–quintic–septic law nonlinearity and spatial dissipations effects. We properly construct the dark and bright optical soliton solutions for our governing model. Furthermore, periodic, other singular solutions, multiwave, homoclinic breather, M-shaped rational and their interaction with kink waves of various structures will be derived. In this paper, we use the sub-ODE method to analyze soliton solutions for the renowned nonlinear Klein-Gordon model (NLKGM). This method provides a variety of soliton solutions, including three positive solitons, three Jacobian elliptic function solutions, bright solitons, dark solitons, periodic solitons, rational solitons and hyperbolic function solutions. Applications for these solitons can be found in optical communication, fiber optic sensors, plasma physics, Bose-Einstein condensation and other areas. We also study some numerical solutions by using forward, backward, and central difference techniques. Moreover, we discuss variational integrators (VIs) using the projection technique for NLKGM. We develop a numerical solution for NLKGM using the discrete Euler lagrange equation, the Lagrangian and the Euler lagrange equation. At the end, in various dimensions, covering 3D, 2D, and contour, we will also plot several graphs for the obtained NLKGM solutions. A contour plot is a type of graphic representation that displays a three-dimensional surface on a two-dimensional plane by using contour lines. Each contour line in the plotted function represents one of the function's constant values, mapping the function's value across the plane. This model has been studied across multiple soliton solutions using various methods in the open literature, but this model for VIs and finite deference scheme (FDS) is the first time it has been studied. Within the various numerical techniques accessible for solving Hamiltonian systems, variational integrators distinguish themselves because of their symplectic quality. Patient satisfaction is of growing interest to the medical field. Qualities essential to patient satisfaction with primary care providers have been characterized, but little work has been done to assess factors that affect patient satisfaction in dermatology.  The objective of this study was to determine factors essential to patient satisfaction in dermatology. Qualitative data from an online survey were collected and organized thematically relying on a previously established coding scheme for patient satisfaction comments. Themes studied include the character of the physician, communication, time, care, and qualities of the office staff.   Doctors with good character who communicated effectively and spent sufficient time with patients received high satisfaction. An efficient and friendly office staff also contributed to high satisfaction. Poor patient satisfaction was mainly linked to flaws in physician demeanor, lack of communication, and rushed appointments.  A limitation to the study included potential bias of an online survey sample, although the widespread use of the tool to capture more respondents in dermatology may mitigate this limitation. To achieve high patient satisfaction, it is vital that a physician is cognizant of the profound effects of how his or her character, communication style, time investment, and office staff appear to patients because patients consider these factors in addition to clinical outcomes when evaluating physicians.

Objectives: Perioperative stroke is the most dreaded complication of carotid artery interventions and can severely affect patients' quality of life. This study evaluated the impact of this event on mortality for patients undergoing interventional treatment of carotid artery stenosis with three different modalities. Methods: Patients undergoing carotid revascularization at participating Memorial Hermann Health System facilities were captured from 2003-2022. These patients were treated with either carotid endarterectomy (CEA), transfemoral carotid stenting (TF-CAS), or transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR). Perioperative outcomes, including stroke and mortality, as well as follow-up survival data at 6-month intervals, were analyzed and stratified per treatment modality. Results: Of the 1681 carotid revascularization patients identified, 992 underwent CEA (59.0%), 524 underwent TCAR (31.2%), and 165 underwent TF-CAS (9.8%). The incidence of stroke was 2.1% (CEA 2.1%, TCAR 1.7%, and TF-CAS 3.6%; P =.326). The perioperative (30-day) death rate was 2.1% (n = 36). The perioperative death rate was higher in patients who suffered from an intraoperative stroke than in those who did not (8.3% vs 1.9%, P =.007). Perioperative death was also different between CEA, TCAR, and TF-CAS for patients who had an intraoperative stroke (.0% vs 33.3% vs.0%, P =.05). TCAR patients were likely to be older (P <.001), have a higher body mass index (P <.001), and have diabetes mellitus (P <.001). Patients who suffered from an intraoperative stroke were more likely to have a symptomatic carotid lesion (58.3% vs 28.8%, P <.001). The TCAR group had a significantly lower survival at 6 months and 12 months when compared to the other two groups (64.9% vs 100% P =.007). Conclusion: Perioperative stroke during carotid interventions significantly impacts early patient survival with otherwise no apparent change in mid-term outcomes at 5 years. This difference appears to be even more significant in patients undergoing TCAR, possibly due to their baseline higher-risk profile and lower functional reserve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In highly-productive agricultural areas such as California's Central Valley, where groundwater often supplies the bulk of the water required for irrigation, quantifying rates of groundwater depletion remains a challenge owing to a lack of monitoring infrastructure and the absence of water use reporting requirements. Here we use 78 months (October, 2003–March, 2010) of data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment satellite mission to estimate water storage changes in California's Sacramento and San Joaquin River Basins. We find that the basins are losing water at a rate of 31.0 ± 2.7 mm yr−1 equivalent water height, equal to a volume of 30.9 km3 for the study period, or nearly the capacity of Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. We use additional observations and hydrological model information to determine that the majority of these losses are due to groundwater depletion in the Central Valley. Our results show that the Central Valley lost 20.4 ± 3.9 mm yr−1 of groundwater during the 78-month period, or 20.3 km3 in volume. Continued groundwater depletion at this rate may well be unsustainable, with potentially dire consequences for the economic and food security of the United States.

Freshwater discharge from the continents is a key component of Earth’s water cycle that sustains human life and ecosystem health. Surprisingly, owing to a number of socioeconomic and political obstacles, a comprehensive global river discharge observing system does not yet exist. Here we use 13 years (1994–2006) of satellite precipitation, evaporation, and sea level data in an ocean mass balance to estimate freshwater discharge into the global ocean. Results indicate that global freshwater discharge averaged 36,055 km3/y for the study period while exhibiting significant interannual variability driven primarily by El Niño Southern Oscillation cycles. The method described here can ultimately be used to estimate long-term global discharge trends as the records of sea level rise and ocean temperature lengthen. For the relatively short 13-year period studied here, global discharge increased by 540 km3/y2, which was largely attributed to an increase of global-ocean evaporation (768 km3/y2). Sustained growth of these flux rates into long-term trends would provide evidence for increasing intensity of the hydrologic cycle.

Several previous studies have shown the significance of representing shallow groundwater in land surface model (LSM) simulations. However, optimal methods for parameter estimation in order to realistically simulate water table depth have received little attention. The recent availability of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) water storage data provides a unique opportunity to constrain LSM simulations of terrestrial hydrology. In this study, we incorporate both GRACE (storage) and estimated base flow (flux) data in the calibration of LSM parameters, and demonstrate the advantages gained from this approach using a Monte Carlo simulation framework. This approach improves parameter estimation and reduces the uncertainty of water table simulations in the LSM. Using the optimal parameter set identified from the multiobjective calibration, water table simulation can be improved due to close dependence of both base flow and total subsurface water storage on the water table depth. Moreover, it is shown that parameters calibrated from short-term (2003–2005) GRACE and base flow data can be validated using simulations for the periods of 1984–1998 and 2006–2007, which implies that the proposed multiobjective calibration strategy is robust. More important, this study has demonstrated the potential for the joint use of routinely available GRACE water storage data and streamflow records to constrain LSM simulations at the global scale.
