Microcentrini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 This tribe is composed by 20 genera and 107 species distributed in the Neotropical Region, Mexican Transition Zone, South American Transition Zone and Neartic Region. Most species within the tribe were described based on syntypes and no taxonomic revisions had yet been made for taxa placed in Microcentrini. Anaulacomera (Cervicercora) dama Rehn, 1913 Fig. 16E Distribution: Argentina: Misiones; Brazil: Paraná. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: This is the first record of the species after its original description, and the first record of the species for Brazil. The female is not yet known. Lamniceps gigliotosi Bolívar, 1903 Fig. 6B; 8F Distribution: Brazil: Paraná, São Paulo; Paraguay. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: Just two females were collected, in understory bushes of the forest. While being reared, they only ate vegetables and fruits, rejecting leaves and fish food flakes. Brachyteleutias bilineatus (Rehn, 1913) Fig. 30G, H; 31B Distribution: Argentina: Misiones; Brazil: Paraná. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: The individuals are nocturnal, particularly abundant, easily found on branches and twigs of bushes and small trees of the forest understory. Bioacoustics (Fig. 30G–I): The stridulation is performed only at night. The echemes are short, with ca. one second of duration, and composed by sequences of three to six diplosyllables, each one formed by two grouped syllables. The amplitude of the first syllable is distinctly lower than the amplitude of the second, which is emitted with an abrupt increasing of intensity. Dominant frequency: 32.4 ± 2.9 kHz. Scaphurae Westwood, 1838 This group presents only the genus Scaphura, with 11 species, restricted to the South American continent (Neotropical Region, Andean Region and South American Transition Zone). Hyperphrona striolata Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1891 Fig. 19D, E; 22F Distribution: Brazil: Amazonas, Paraná; Peru; Surinam: Sipaliwini. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: This is the most austral record of the species, moving its known distribution ca. 3,000 km southwards. After its original description, the species was recorded in Surinam (Naskrecki, 2011) and now in the Paraná State, Brazil. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: The individuals were collected on branches, tree trunks and shrubs. Bioacoustics (Fig. 3D–F): The calling song of this species is complex, as different types of syllables are produced. Each echeme is composed by a sequence of nine to 15 trios of syllables. Each trio initiates with a very short syllable, that is followed by a long one, and by the third syllable that presents an intermediary duration. Phlugis virens (Thunberg, 1815) Fig. 9B Distribution: Brazil: Paraná; Cuba. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: This species is currently considered as a junior synonym of P. chrysopa, but we follow here the proposition of Dr. H. Braun that suggested on the OSF database (Cigliano et al. 2022) that P. virens should be considered as a valid species. The subgenital plates of males figured here, although similar to P. chrysopa, present a much more restricted terminal dilation, resembling a golf club head. The syntypes of P. chrysopa, otherwise, present terminal dilations that are much longer and wider, resembling a spatula. Neoconocephalus sp. 1 Fig. 6J Comments: Three individuals within the Neoconocephalus were classified as follows. Individuals, all males, present (1) a black spot at the base of each tibia, (2) narrow wings, of a single colour, twice as long as femur III, (3) rounded fastigium, longer than wide, with whitish apex, (4) apex of vertex green, the same way as the rest of the body, and (5) mirror straight at its anterior margin, concave at the medial/posterior margin and slightly curved at the lateral margin. Viadana (Viadana) piracicabae Piza, 1969 Fig. 17K, L; 22E Distribution: Brazil: Paraná, São Paulo; Paraguay: Alto Paraná. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: This is the second record of the species after its original description. Gorochov (2015) recently presented a record of the species for Puerto Bertoni, Alto Paraná, Paraguay, a place nearby the Iguaçu National Park. Bioacoustics (Fig. 21A–C): The stridulation is performed by males during the day and at the beginning of the night. The echemes are composed by seven to 35 syllables. Neoconocephalus alligatus Walker, 1869 Fig. 6C; 8I Distribution: Brazil: Pará, Paraná. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: This species is currently considered as a junior synonym of Neoconocephalus tuberculatus (De Geer, 1773). However, when studying the collected specimens, we observed some differences between this species and N. tuberculatus (analyzed through photos of holotype, available at OSF): (1) tibia I and II black; (2) femur III with black colour in the apical half, and with spines of different colour; (3) conical vertex, much longer than wide; (4) fastigium of the vertex black; (5) A2 vein dorsally distinct and with a colour that varies from black to light yellow; (6) rounded mirror. This is the southernmost record of the species, which was only previously recorded in the North of the country. So, this is the first record of the species for the Atlantic Forest. Dasyscelus normalis Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1895 Fig. 29C, D; 31A Distribution: Argentina: Buenos Aires; Brazil: Paraná; Paraguay: Paraguarí. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: The collected specimens have an interesting colouration pattern, when alive they are greyish with some greenish areas or spots, and with ventral edge of abdomen light brown. They camouflage on mosses and lichens, where they can be found and collected. Bioacoustics (Fig. 30D–F): Males produce echemes with small duration and quite constant amplitude. Each echeme is composed by 22 to 28 syllables with a moderate increasing of intensity during the sound production. A remarkable characteristic of the song of the species is that the dominant frequency changes along the stridulation: the dominant frequency is smaller at the beginning and at the end of the syllable than in the middle of the syllable, when the highest frequency is reached. Xiphelimum amplipennis Caudell, 1906 Fig. 2K, L; 8D Distribution: Argentina: Misiones; Brazil: Paraná; Paraguay. Comments: This species was previously recorded for the Paraná State (Cigliano et al. 2022). Despite the few individuals collected, this species can be easily heard in the hottest and humid months of the year, as suggested by Morris et al. (2016). We observed populations with high density of males that stridulated continuously during the day and through the first hours of the night in the vegetation, especially on forest bushes. Bioacoustics (Fig. 5): Males produce long echeme sequences, stridulating continually during day and through the first hours of the night, in chorus behaviour, but not always synchronized. The syllables are composed by three parts, the first with low amplitude, the second with high and the third with medium amplitude. Caulopsis gracillima (Walker, 1869) Fig. 6A Distribution: Brazil: Paraná. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: The description of this species brings Brazil as its type locality, and this species is recorded for the first time since its original description. All species of this genus have a very elongated fastigium, generally longer than the length of the pronotal disc. The individual collected here has a bright green colour, different from the type, where the colour has probably deteriorated (photos available on OSF database). This specimen was collected in the buildings close to the Iguaçu Falls, so the species is also possibly present in the homonymous park in Argentina. Aniarella minor Bruner, 1915 Fig. 10A Distribution: Brazil: Paraná; Bolívia: Santa Cruz. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: The female of the species was recorded for the first time. Additionally, this is the first record of the species after its original description, and also the first record of this species for Brazil. The subgenital plate of the female bears a peculiar morphology, as its apex has a shape resembling the “M” letter, with a large and well delimited base that resembles an inverted “B”. The ovipositor is short, slightly longer than the double of the length of the cerci, abruptly curved upwards, with dorsal valves curved at the first basal quarter, the remaining straight, with teeth at the last quarter. Agraecia agraecioides (Rehn, 1911) Fig. 2A, B Distribution: Argentina: Misiones; Brazil: Minas Gerais, Paraná; Paraguay. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: Individuals of this species are particularly abundant, both in visual as well as in aural observations, contrasting with the results of Chamorro-Rengifo et al. (2015), that stated the species as rare. As presented by Chamorro-Rengifo et al. (2015), these organisms inhabit in moist environments and preserved areas, what reinforces the importance of the Iguaçu National Park for the conservation of this species Bioacoustics (Fig. 3A–C): Males produce long sequences of echemes, each one composed by two syllables, the first with smaller and the second with higher intensity; in both cases the intensity increases quickly, and, after reaching the peak, decreases briefly and constantly. 5. PTEROCHROZINAE WALKER, 1871 This katydid subfamily is endemic to Neotropical Region, and all of its representatives resemble leaves, live or dead, illustrating an important cryptic pattern. The subfamily comprises 96 species, belonging to 14 genera. Ten genera and 36 species are currently known to inhabit Brazil. Neoconocephalus sp. 5 Fig. 6N Comments: Sixteen individuals were sampled, which presents: (1) the ventral region of all tibiae black, as well as the ventral region of the apical half of the femur III, (2) wide wings, with numerous black punctuations; (3) rhomboid fastigium of the vertex, much longer than wide, with a white apex, (4) apex of the fastigium of the vertex coloured as the rest of the body, with a black spot above the fastigium tooth, (5) quadrangular mirror, with all the margins slightly curved, lateral and medial margins much longer than the anterior and posterior margins. Bioacoustics (Fig. 7E–H): Males stridulated during the night, in a long sequence of echemes (superior to seven minutes), that appear in a crescendo of amplitude. When each echeme was analysed, several hemisyllables, also in a crescendo of amplitude, appear. We also highlight that this echemes was regularly spaced. Phlugis sp. 1 Fig. 9C Comments: We collected only one male, which bears a subgenital plate very different from the Phlugis species described based on males (both holotypes and syntypes). The subgenital plate, in ventral view, its first two basal thirds quadrangular, with a straight lateral margin, and the apical third triangular, resembling a tip, no longer than half of the length of the plate itself, and with a ventral expansion. In lateral view, the subgenital plate is flattened, with a dilation at half of its length. Cerci, in addition, are not greater than half of the length of the subgenital plate. Comments: This is the first record of the species for Brazil. The collected specimens of S. elegans present a considerable variation regarding the white coloration that appears on the lateral lobes of the pronotum as well as regarding the green or white stain on the middle of the fore femur. Bioacoustics (Fig. 21 G–I): The stridulation is produced during the day and twilight hours. Males stridulate continually and females respond in a duet behaviour. The echemes are formed by 18 to 22 syllables, emitted in a gradual and subtle decrescendo of intensity. The females respond to males very quickly (less than ca. 0.3 seconds), with echemes formed by six to ten syllables (the intermediate syllables with higher amplitude than the others). Comments: Even if this species was previously recorded for the Paraná State (Cigliano et al. 2022), the record for the Iguaçu National Park is new. We collected individuals which varied considerably regarding coloration patterns: greenish, whitish, greenish-whitish, brownish-whitish, greyish were recorded, even if dark brown specimens were most frequent. Bioacoustics (Fig. 33E–G): The stridulation only occurs at night, when males produce very conspicuous short echemes that are composed by sequences of two syllables. Such syllables are distinctly emitted with a gradual increase and a posterior decrease of intensity. Comments: This species is also remarkably abundant and is syntopic with Ceraia cornutoides. The individuals are collected both in light traps as during active search both at night and day. The occurrence of this species seems to be restricted to areas southwards of the Tropic of Capricorn. Bioacoustics (Fig. 24A, B): Males produce isolated syllables only during the day, especially in the evening. Anaulacomera (Anaulacomera) argentina Rehn, 1913 Fig. 16A, B Distribution: Argentina: Misiones; Brazil: Paraná. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: This is the first record of the species after its original description, although individuals seem to be quite common in the ParNa Iguaçu. They were massively attracted to light traps, where they could be easily collected (we even decided not to collect all of them). Individuals did not feed when reared in the laboratory, rejecting any food we offer to them (fruits, vegetables, grass, fish food flakes). Bioacoustics (Fig. 18A–C): Males continually stridulate through the night and the day, when they produce short echemes of two types. The first with high and constant amplitude, composed by four to six syllables that are regularly spaced. The second, otherwise, present moderate amplitude, but beginning and ending with syllables that reach slower amplitudes than the middle syllables. Syllables of this second type of echeme are very grouped, i.e., the mute interval is very short, and the interval between syllables only increases after ca. half of the echeme. New record for Brazil and for the Paraná State. Comments: This species was also rarely found after its description. As far as we know, this is only the fourth record of the species. Just as for the other species of the tribe previously presented, S. dentiferum also seems to be broadly distributed along forested areas of South America. Bioacoustics (Fig. 26G–I): The stridulation is performed by males at night, when long sequences of syllables not forming echemes are produced. Similarly to sounds of C. citrifolium and S. dentiferoides, each syllable is formed by pulses that are very sparse in the beginning, then becoming more grouped after the first third of the syllable. Comments: Individuals are nocturnal, always sampled under the vegetation of understory, in bushes and shrubs. Males stridulate there, being easily found together with conspecific females. The species is relatively abundant inside the forest where is notable during aural observation. Bioacoustics (Fig. 12A–D): The calling song is composed by a complex grouping of six to ten echemes. Each echeme begins with a crescendo intensity and closes with decrescendo intensity, being composed by 30 to 40 syllables. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: Individuals of this species were collected on grasses of open vegetation. Bioacoustics (Fig. 4D–F): Males of this species produced two kinds of echemes, one of long duration (I), and other of short duration (II). The echemes of long duration are produced on the beginning of the echeme sequence, however, they can also be emitted during the sequences. The syllables of opening stroke presenting higher amplitude than those related to the closing strokes. The syllables of closing strokes are short, with a lower dominant frequency (ca. 12 kHz), whereas, those related to the opening strokes are long and with a higher frequency (higher than 20 kHz). Comments: This is the first record of the species after its original description. Even if a lectotype are yet to be designed, specimens have been safely identified as they present a conspicuous and singular diagonal white stripe from the eye towards the inferior border of the lateral lobes of pronotum, besides the entirely white gena. Tomeophera modesta Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1891 Fig. 17J Distribution: Brazil: Paraná, Santa Catarina; Peru: Atalaya. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: Here we recorded for the first time the male of the species. Males present a subgenital plate common to the species of the genus, rounded, without a median keel, with posterior processes relatively long and with many bristles. The cerci are long, pilose, a little longer than the subgenital plate, with a straight and large base, with a curved apex, similar to a spatula, and with a little apical spine. Neoconocephalus puiggarii (Bolívar, 1884) Fig. 6E; 8G Distribution: Brazil: Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: This species is also polymorphic, even if this condition was not recognized among the individuals collected at ParNa Iguaçu. All the collected individuals were green, contrasting with the rust colour found both in the lectotype and in the individuals mentioned by Redtenbacher (1891). The number of individuals of the species housed in the collections is uncertain, since this information was not presented in the original description, the same way that the number of specimens recorded for the Rio Grande do Sul State was not reported in the aforementioned paper. Steirodon (Posidippus) dentiferoides Emsley, 1970 Fig. 25B, C Distribution: Brazil: Pará, Paraná, Santa Catarina; Guyana. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: The first record of this species after its original description was made by Nasckrecki (2007), in Guyana. Here we provide a new record for the species that is not that far from the type locality. The known distribution of S. dentiferoides resembles that of the previous species, as an enormous gap of records between Amazon and Atlantic Forest also exist. Bioacoustic (Fig. 26D–F): Males stridulate only at night, continually emitting syllables that apparently do not form echemes. In the same way as for the anterior species, the syllables are composed by pulses that are sparser in the first half of the syllable then becoming more grouped towards the end of the syllable. Dominant frequency: 13 ± 1.9 kHz. Bandwidth: 10 ± 0.5 kHz. Duration: syllable: 0.03 ± 0.002 ms. Neoconocephalus rioclarensis Piza, 1975 Fig. 6H; 8H Distribution: Brazil: Minas Gerais, Paraná, São Paulo. New record for the Paraná State. Comments: Individuals of this species were found only at night, and we are able to locate them specially when they were singing. Males are quite large when comparing to another species of Neoconocephalus, presenting the tegmina with conspicuous black spots. This species is also polymorphic, since green and testaceous individuals are present. Bioacoustics (Fig. 7A–D): The song of the species was recorded in an amplitude above the limit of the recorder, but we were still able to infer some characteristics. Males emit regularly spaced echemes, during the night, each echeme composed by ca. 25 hemisyllables. The amplitude is constant. Dominant frequency: 5.4 ± 0.2 kHz. Bandwidth: 0.9 ± 0.5 kHz.
