117. Comparison Between the Reaction Mechanisms of Nitridation of Si(100) by a NH3 Molecular Beam and by a Ion Beam.

Abstract

Nitridation of a Si(100) surface takes place with NH3 at temperatures higher than 600°C and with a low energy ion beam at room temperature, formating a thin film of nitride. The nitridation processes have been studied in situ under ultrahigh vacuum by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The reaction with NH3 occurs on the surface with Si atoms supplied by out-diffusion from the substrate, producing a nitride film. On the other hand, the N atoms of the low energy ion beam (100-1000 eV) penetrate into the bulk by their kinetic energy and form the nitride layer near the surface. The difference of these mechanisms is clearly observed in the evolution of the N1s and Si2p XPS spectra during the reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

121. Nitridation of a diamond film using 300–700 eV N+2ion beams

Abstract

Diamond samples grown on Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition were nitrided at room temperature by irradiation of 300–700eV N+2ion beams. The C1s and N1s XPS spectra were taken during nitridation and after annealing in ultrahigh vacuum. These spectra were tentatively divided into three components. The dominant part of the N1s spectrum split clearly into two components of the binding energies of 398.6 and 400.8eV after annealing. The N1s component at ∼398.6eV and the C1s component at ∼287.8eV are attributed to carbon nitrides such as CNx, for example, C3N4. The nitrogen atoms having N1s core level of ∼401eV have to be positively charged compared with ∼400eV of neutral nitrogen. They donate electrons to the surface state and cause an upward band bending (n-type semiconductor case), which induces the peak shift of the C1s XPS of the diamond toward a higher binding energy of ∼285.6eV.

Guest Editor's Introduction: Regarding immunomodulation to a patient, it is sometimes forgotten that the apheresis procedure itself induces immunomodulation effects to a certain extent. Such an effect is called procedurally associated immunomodulation and defined by Nosé as the immunological impacts induced by the device and the method other than the intended therapeutic immunomodulation to a patient. 131. Coadsorption of CO and C2H4on Pd(110). Formation of a (3×2) mixed structure

Abstract

The coadsorption of CO and C2H4on the Pd(110) surface has been studied by using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). A (3×2) LEED pattern is observed for the (CO+C2H4)-coadsorbed Pd(110) surface. The (3×2) pattern is not observed for pure CO or C2H4adsorbed on the Pd(110) surface, and thus it is attributed to the mixed structure of the adsorbed CO and C2H4. A structural model of the Pd(110)(3×2)−(CO+C2H4) surface is proposed.

Abstract

To identify risk factors and bronchial dose constraints for radiation pneumonitis (RP) after stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in patients with central early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We reviewed 245 patients with early-stage NSCLC treated with SBRT, and 79 patients with a tumor within 3 cm of the main or lobar bronchus were included in this study. The median prescribed dose and fraction were 50 Gy and 4 fractions, respectively. The primary endpoint was grade ≥ 2 RP. Gray's test was performed to examine the relationship between clinical risk factors and grade ≥2 RP, and the Fine-Gray model was used for a multivariate analysis. The effects of each dose parameter on grade ≥2 RP were evaluated with the Fine-Gray model and optimal thresholds were tested using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Among a total of 79 patients analyzed. The median age of patients was 77 years. The median follow-up period was 43 months. The 4-year cumulative incidence of grade ≥2 RP was 22.5% (G2, 11 patients; G3, 6 patients; ≥G4, none). The multivariate analysis of clinical factors identified age, the location of the lobes, and the solid component diameter as significant factors for grade ≥2 RP (p = 0.018, 0.005, and 0.002, respectively). Regarding bronchial parameters, V10-V40Gy and D0.1-D5cc correlated with the development of RP. Among all parameters of the bronchus and lung, only bronchial parameters exceeded AUC of 0.72 for grade ≥2 RP. Parameters with AUC exceeding 0.72 were bronchus V20Gy (AUC, 0.728), V15Gy (AUC, 0.736), and V10Gy (AUC, 0.723), with respective thresholds of 0.41, 1.2, and 1.8 cc. Bronchus V15Gy ≤1.2 cc serves as the best indicator for the prevention of grade ≥2 RP. In SBRT for central early-stage NSCLC, bronchus V15Gy ≤1.2 cc is the definitive indicator for preventing grade ≥2 RP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
