Abstract

Investigation of the tensile and fatigue properties of cast magnesium alloys, created by the heated mold continuous casting process (HMC), was conducted. The mechanical properties of the Mg-HMC alloys were overall higher than those for the Mg alloys, made by the conventional gravity casting process (GC), and especially excellent mechanical properties were obtained for the Mg97Y2Zn1-HMC alloy. This was because of the fine-grained structure composed of the α-Mg phases with the interdendritic LPSO phase. Such mechanical properties were similar levels to those for conventional cast aluminum alloy (Al84.7Si10.5Cu2.5Fe1.3Zn1 alloys: ADC12), made by the GC process. Moreover, the tensile properties (σUTS and εf) and fatigue properties of the Mg97Y2Zn1-HMC alloy were about 1.5 times higher than that for the commercial Mg90Al9Zn1-GC alloy (AZ91). The high correlation rate between tensile properties and fatigue strength (endurance limit: σl) was obtained. With newly proposed etching technique, the residual stress in the Mg97Y2Zn1 alloy could be revealed, and it appeared that the high internal stress was severely accumulated in and around the long-period stacking-order phases (LPSO). This was made during the solidification process due to the different shrinkage rate between α-Mg and LPSO. In this etching technique, micro-cracks were observed on the sample surface, and amount of micro-cracks (density) could be a parameter to determine the severity of the internal stress, i.e., a large amount to micro-cracks is caused by the high internal stress.

Abstract

Unbound states in C17 were investigated via one-neutron removal from a C18 beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of C17, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the C16 fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/21− and 3/21−, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes – in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.

Abstract

Identification of the key genetic alterations leading to ovarian cancer is in its infancy. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based analysis of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) is a powerful method for detecting regions of altered tumour-suppressor genes. Focusing on chromosome 12, we examined 23 ovarian cancer samples for LOH using 31 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers and found the chromosomal localization of two putative tumour-suppressor genes. Two commonly deleted regions were 12p12.3-13.1 in 6/23 (26%) and 12q23-ter in 7/23 (30%) samples. LOH on chromosome 12 was more common in late-stage ovarian carcinomas. The region of LOH at 12p12.3-13.1 includes the genes that code for the ETS-family transcriptional factor, known as TEL, and the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, known as p27Kip1. Mutational analysis of both TEL and p27Kip1 using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) showed no abnormalities, suggesting that the altered gene in this region is neither of these genes. Taken together, our data suggest that new tumour-suppressor genes in the region of chromosomes 12p12.3-13.1 and 12q23-ter may be involved in the development of ovarian cancer.

Patients and methods: The study period was from June 2002 to March 2014. The subjects were 28 patients with a stage II bulky mass in the NAC group and 17 such patients in the Ope group. The chi-square test was used to compare operative time, volume of intraoperative blood loss, use of blood transfusion, and time from surgery to discharge between the two groups. Moreover, the log-rank test using the Kaplan–Meier method was performed to compare disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) between the groups. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in operative time, volume of intraoperative blood loss, or use of blood transfusion. However, the time from surgery to discharge was 18 days (14–25 days) in the NAC group and 25 days (21–34 days) in the Ope group; the patients in the NAC group were discharged earlier (P=0.032). The hazard ratio for DFS in the NAC group as compared with that in the Ope group was 0.36 (95% CI 0.08–0.91), and the 3-year DFS rates were 81.2% and 41.0%, respectively (P=0.028). Moreover, the hazard ratio for OS was 0.39 (95% CI 0.11–1.24), and the 3-year OS rates were 82.3% and 66.4%, respectively (P=0.101). Conclusion: NAC with cisplatin and irinotecan was confirmed to prolong DFS as compared with RH alone. The results of this study suggest that NAC might be a useful adjunct to surgery in the treatment of stage II squamous cell carcinoma presenting as a bulky mass. 118. Clinical courses of COVID-19 cases with or without SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin antibodies identified during quarantine at international airports in Japan

Abstract

Background: The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has spread around the world and been classified as a global pandemic. This study aimed to determine the factors involved in the time to disappearance of SARS-CoV-2 from nasopharyngeal swabs in patients with COVID-19. Methods: The study participants were 22 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 whose nasopharyngeal swabs tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in quarantine before being admitted to our hospital. All patients underwent laboratory tests for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and chest X-ray on admission. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate retrospectively the association between the number of days from nasopharyngeal to viral resolution and clinical factors. Results: In the univariate analysis, no clinical or laboratory factors, including age, sex, highest body temperature, lowest peripheral oxygen saturation, presence of symptoms during hospitalization, laboratory results, and chest X-ray findings, were associated with negative RT-qPCR results at 5, 7, and 10 days from first detection of the virus. Although no statistically significant differences were found, the median times required until achieving two consecutive negative RT-qPCR results for SARS-CoV-2 from first detection of the virus were 5 and 10 days in cases without and with anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin M (IgM) and/or immunoglobulin M (IgG) antibodies, respectively. Conclusion: Although we only investigated the presence or absence of IgM and IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 at the time of admission, our results suggest that humoral immunity may not be essential for the disappearance of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swabs.

7 pags., 3 figs., 1 tab., The one-neutron knockout from ^{52}Ca in inverse kinematics onto a proton target was performed at ∼230 MeV/nucleon combined with prompt γ spectroscopy. Exclusive quasifree scattering cross sections to bound states in ^{51}Ca and the momentum distributions corresponding to the removal of 1f_{7/2} and 2p_{3/2} neutrons were measured. The cross sections, interpreted within the distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction framework, are consistent with a shell closure at the neutron number N=32, found as strong as at N=28 and N=34 in Ca isotopes from the same observables. Abstract

The isotopic production cross sections for the reactions of 136Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/u were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence of the cross sections was investigated systematically. It was found that for the light-mass products, the cross sections on carbon are larger than those on deuteron and proton. The measured cross sections on proton were compared with the previous data at higher reaction energies to study the energy dependence. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical calculations including both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes using PHITS and with the EPAX and SPACS empirical parameterizations.

The patient was a 54-year-old woman with stage IIIC recurrent ovarian serous adenocarcinoma (grade 3). Computed tomography (CT) revealed that no evidence of ascites, multiple intraperitoneal dissemination, or intrapelvic lymph node metastases was present. The absence of bowel obstruction and disseminated lesions involving the intestinal tract was confirmed by CT. Performance status was 0, and a blood test also indicated preservation of major organ function. In our hospital, weekly paclitaxel plus bevacizumab therapy (paclitaxel at 80 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, and 15; bevacizumab at 15/mg/kg on day 1 and every 21 days thereafter) was started. Eight cycles were administered, with no signs of gastrointestinal perforation, and the antitumor effect was evaluated as a complete response. The observed adverse events included grade 1 hyponatremia and grade 1 hypochloremia, and there was one grade 1 sensory peripheral neuropathy. These adverse events neither delayed treatment nor necessitated any dosage reductions. This case suggests that bevacizumab can be safely administered even to patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who have received three or more prior chemotherapy regimens if there are neither symptoms of bowel obstruction nor lesions suggestive of intestinal invasion on diagnostic imaging. Abstract

The local piezoelectricity of a Na-flux GaN crystal grown on a multipoint-seed-GaN template is investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy. The piezoresponse is critically dependent on two types of growth regions that are dominantly formed in the Na-flux GaN crystal: the c-growth sector (cGS), which is grown on top of the point-seed GaN surface with a growth front of (0001) planes, and the facet-growth sector (FGS), which is grown on the side of cGS with { 10 1 ¯ 1 } facets. Quantitative analyses reveal the GaN surface displacements at cGS that result from the piezoresponses increase with the applied AC voltage: the measured values well reflect the piezoelectric constant of d33 in GaN. The piezoresponses at the FGS and the boundary between the cGS and FGS are less sensitive than that at the cGS. A combination of cathodoluminescence and multiphoton excitation photoluminescence techniques clarifies that a local reduction of the piezoresponse observed in cGS is attributed to microscale FGSs that exist randomly in cGS. The dependence of the piezoresponse on the growth regions is quantitatively discussed from three possible viewpoints that potentially affect the polarization properties of GaN: residual strain, local crystallographic tilting, and inherent carrier distribution. As a result, a carrier screening effect is the most probable candidate to induce reduction of the piezoresponse in the FGSs of GaN crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report our experience with a patient suffering from recurrent ovarian CCC who achieved long-term disease control with everolimus administration. The patient was a 53-year-old woman who was diagnosed with recurrent ovarian CCC with dissemination throughout the abdominal cavity. Previously, she had received three chemotherapy regimens, but the disease was progressive and she showed no response to treatment. Therefore, oral everolimus administration (everolimus 10 mg/day on days 1–28, a 28-day period comprised one cycle) was started. She was administered six cycles. The antitumor response was stable disease, and grade 3 anemia was observed. Chemotherapy was then switched to gemcitabine/docetaxel therapy. In the middle of the second cycle, a rapid increase in ascitic fluid and CA125 elevation were observed. Thereafter, the patient received best supportive care and died of the disease. Everolimus may inhibit malignant progression of ovarian CCC. Keywords: mTORC1, ovarian cancer, palliative chemotherapy

Abstract

The nucleus $^{29}$Ne is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder $f_{7/2}$-state, which would place $^{29}$Ne firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of $^{29}$Ne is reported. The states were populated in $^{30}\mathrm{Ne}(p,pn)$ and $^{30}\mathrm{Na}(p,2p)$ reactions at a beam energy of around $230$ MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing $\ell$-assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant $\ell$=3-component, giving first evidence for $f_{7/2}$ single particle strength in $^{29}$Ne. Abstract

International audience; The low-lying level structure of V59 and V61 was investigated for the first time. The neutron knockout reaction and inelastic proton scattering were applied for V61 while the neutron knock-out reaction provided the data for V59. Four and five new transitions were determined for V59 and V61, respectively. Based on the comparison to our shell-model calculations using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction, three of the observed γ rays for each isotope could be placed in the level scheme and assigned to the decay of the first 11/2− and 9/2− levels. The (p,p′) excitation cross sections for V61 were analyzed by the coupled-channels formalism assuming quadrupole plus hexadecapole deformations. Due to the role of the hexadecapole deformation, V61 could not be unambiguously placed on the island of inversion.
