Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
30 MHz fast-wave heating may be an effective tool for non-inductively ramping low-current plasmas to a level suitable for initiating up to 12 MW of neutral beam injection on the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment Upgrade (NSTX-U). Previously on NSTX 30 MHz fast wave heating was shown to efficiently and rapidly heat electrons; at the NSTX maximum axial toroidal magnetic field (BT(0)) of 0.55 T, 1.4 MW of 30 MHz heating increased the central electron temperature from 0.2 to 2 keV in 30 ms and generated an H-mode plasma with a non-inductive fraction (fNI) ∼ 0.7 at a plasma current (Ip) of 300 kA. NSTX-U will operate at BT(0) up to 1 T, with up to 4 MW of 30 MHz power (Prf). Predictive TRANSP free boundary transport simulations, using the TORIC full wave spectral code to calculate the fast-wave heating and current drive, have been run for NSTX-U Ip = 300 kA H-mode plasmas. Favorable scaling of fNI with 30 MHz heating power is predicted, with fNI ≥ 1 for Prf ≥ 2 MW.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Injection of waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) into a tokamak can potentially raise the plasma potential via RF rectification. Probes are affected both by changes in plasma potential and also by RF-averaging of the probe characteristic, with the latter tending to drop the floating potential. We present the effect of ICRF heating on divertor Langmuir probes in the EAST experiment. Over a scan of the outer gap, probes connected to the antennas have increases in floating potential with ICRF, but probes in between the outer-vessel strike point and flux surface tangent to the antenna have decreased floating potential. This behaviour is investigated using field-line mapping. Preliminary results show that mdiplane gas puffing can suppress the strong influence of ICRF on the probes’ floating potential.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent cardioversion compared with those who did not have cardioverson in a large dataset of patients with recent onset non-valvular atrial fibrillation. DESIGN Observational study using prospectively collected registry data (Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-AF-GARFIELD-AF). SETTING 1317 participating sites in 35 countries. PARTICIPANTS 52 057 patients aged 18 years and older with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (up to six weeks' duration) and at least one investigator determined stroke risk factor. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Comparisons were made between patients who received cardioversion and those who had no cardioversion at baseline, and between patients who received direct current cardioversion and those who had pharmacological cardioversion. Overlap propensity weighting with Cox proportional hazards models was used to evaluate the effect of cardioversion on clinical endpoints (all cause mortality, non-haemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism, and major bleeding), adjusting for baseline risk and patient selection. RESULTS 44 201 patients were included in the analysis comparing cardioversion and no cardioversion, and of these, 6595 (14.9%) underwent cardioversion at baseline. The propensity score weighted hazard ratio for all cause mortality in the cardioversion group was 0.74 (95% confidence interval 0.63 to 0.86) from baseline to one year follow-up and 0.77 (0.64 to 0.93) from one year to two year follow-up. Of the 6595 patients who had cardioversion at baseline, 299 had a follow-up cardioversion more than 48 days after enrolment. 7175 patients were assessed in the analysis comparing type of cardioversion: 2427 (33.8%) received pharmacological cardioversion and 4748 (66.2%) had direct current cardioversion. During one year follow-up, event rates (per 100 patient years) for all cause mortality in patients who received direct current and pharmacological cardioversion were 1.36 (1.13 to 1.64) and 1.70 (1.35 to 2.14), respectively. CONCLUSION In this large dataset of patients with recent onset non-valvular atrial fibrillation, a small proportion were treated with cardioversion. Direct current cardioversion was performed twice as often as pharmacological cardioversion, and there appeared to be no major difference in outcome events for these two cardioversion modalities. For the overall cardioversion group, after adjustments for confounders, a significantly lower risk of mortality was found in patients who received early cardioversion compared with those who did not receive early cardioversion. - Abstract
Mega‐scale glacial lineations formed by the raking of ice shelves across the seafloor have been reported from multiple polar regions. Here, we present the first evidence of continental slope situated buried lineations in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea in present‐day water depths of 220 – 800 m. Three separate surfaces with lineations are defined at sub‐seafloor depths of 40 m to 390 m. All lineations are mostly parallel to the general trend of slope contours. The uppermost surface is recognized over a distance of 56 km. In water depths > 500 m the lineations are parallel to each other at a consistent direction (43° ‐ 44°). The second lineated surface is a regionally occurring erosional unconformity. This event has two sub‐sets of lineations: mid‐slope situated lineations oriented at 42‐48°, and lineations closer to the continental shelf break at 55° ‐ 59°. The third lineated surface is an unconformable horizon buried up to 390 m below seafloor with lineaments oriented between 30° and 55°. All three sets of lineations are interpreted to have been produced by ice‐ploughing on the paleo‐seafloor through the grounding of an ice shelf. Our observations are similar to those documented along the slope off northern Alaska, Chukchi Rise, and Lomonosov Ridge. Collectively, these observations support the concept of an extensive ice shelf across the Arctic Ocean that grounded locally along its margins during multiple glaciations, including during the penultimate (or an earlier) glaciation. The youngest set of lineations indicates ice movement to the southwest with a suggested source in Amundsen Gulf and/or M’Clure Strait. Tentative age considerations for these youngest lineations indicate the first evidence for an analogous extensive ice shelf configuration for the last glacial maximum.
