The aim of this review was to explore the pharmacological activity of early tracheophytes (pteridophytes) as an alternative medicine for treating human ailments. As the first vascular plants, pteridophytes (aka, ferns and fern allies) are an ancient lineage, and human beings have been exploring and using taxa from this lineage for over 2000 years because of their beneficial properties. We have documented the medicinal uses of pteridophytes belonging to thirty different families. The lycophyte Selaginella sp. was shown in earlier studies to have multiple pharmacological activity, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antidiabetic, antiviral, antimicrobial, and anti-Alzheimer properties. Among all the pteridophytes examined, taxa from the Pteridaceae, Polypodiaceae, and Adiantaceae exhibited significant medicinal activity. Based on our review, many pteridophytes have properties that could be used in alternative medicine for treatment of various human illnesses. Biotechnological tools can be used to preserve and even improve their bioactive molecules for the preparation of medicines against illness. Even though several studies have reported medicinal uses of ferns, the possible bioactive compounds of several pteridophytes have not been identified. Furthermore, their optimal dosage level and treatment strategies still need to be determined. Finally, the future direction of pteridophyte research is discussed.

Ten diterpenoids including three new abietanes (1-3) were isolated from the twigs and needles of Podocarpus imbricatus, an endangered conifer growing in a Cantonese garden. The new structures were established by means of spectroscopic methods. Among the isolates, 3β-hydroxy-abieta-8,11,13-trien-7-one (5), decandrin G (6), and 7,15-pimaradien-18-oic acid (8) showed significant anti-neuroinflammatory activities by inhibiting the overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine BV-2 microglial cells, with IC 50 values of 3.7, 11.1, and 4.5 μM, respectively.

Utilization of Salvinia molesta, an aquatic weed which is notorious for its allelopathy and invasiveness, has been explored by its vermicomposting. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and plant bioassay tests were conducted to analyze the composition and fertilizer value of S .molesta vermicompost. Germination and seedling growth tests were performed in soil supplemented with vermicompost at levels ranging from 0.75 to 40% by weight of the soil on three common food plants, ladies finger (Abelmoschus esculentus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), and green gram (Vigna radiata). The influence of S. molesta's vermicompost on some of the physicochemical and biological attributes of the soil was also studied. FT-IR analysis revealed that S. molesta loses its allelopathy, as the chemical compounds that are responsible for it are largely destroyed, in the course of its vermicomposting. There is also an indication that a portion of lignin content of S. molesta is degraded. Vermicompost enhanced the germination success and promoted the morphological growth and biochemical content of the plant species studied. It also bestowed plant friendly physicochemical and biological attributes to the soil. The findings raise the prospect that billions of tons of S. molesta biomass-which not only goes to waste at present but is also a cause of serious harm to the environment-may become utilizable in organic agriculture.

Aquatic macrophytes have properties and mechanisms which are useful for the removal of substances in solution, commonly used in phytoremediation processes in aquatic environments. This study evaluated the performance of copper (Cu) accumulation by Salvinia biloba Raddi (Salviniaceae) in different metal concentrations (1, 3 and 5 µg mL-1), as well as the control treatment, measured at intervals of 0, 7 and 14 days under laboratory conditions, with control as to pH and luminosity. After the experiment, the S. biloba biomass was washed, kiln dried, crushed and subjected to the process of digestion, and subsequently the accumulated copper content was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that S. biloba is apt at accumulating copper, varying significantly between different treatments and days of exposure to the contaminant, as well as its interaction (treatment × days). The highest accumulation values were observed in treatment with 5 µg mL-1, which at 14 days, with 11,861 µg g-1 of copper. We observed symptoms of toxicity and mortality in plants, probably indicating the effect of copper on the species when at high levels. Salvinia biloba is an efficient species in the removal of copper in solution, its recommendation as a remediating agent in aquatic ecosystems being possible.

Aims: The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial properties of novel aqueous natural rapeseed oil/saline emulsions containing different soluble components of spruce resin., Methods and Results: The composition of aqueous resin emulsions was analysed by GC-MS and their antimicrobial properties were studied with challenge tests and with turbidometric assays. The emulsions were strongly antimicrobial against common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including MRSA) as well as common yeasts. Furthermore, they inhibited the biofilm formation and eradicated the microbial biofilms on tested microbes. Characteristic for the emulsions was the presence of oxidized resin acids. Other main components present in emulsions, such as lignans and coumaric acids, were not antimicrobial, when tested separately., Conclusions: The results indicated that the oxidized resin acids were the antimicrobial components in the emulsions. Also, there appears to be a stoichiometric relationship between the number of resin acid molecules and the number microbe cells in the antimicrobial action., Significance and Impact of the Study: The fact that these solutions do not contain abietic acid, which is the main allergenic compound in resins, suggests that these solutions would be suitable, well-tolerated antimicrobials for various medical applications. The fast development of multi-drug resistant (MDR) organisms increasingly threatens global health and well-being. Plant natural products have been known for centuries as alternative medicines that can possess pharmacological characteristics, including antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial activities of essential oil (Calli oil) extracted from the Calligonum comosum plant by hydro-steam distillation was tested either alone or when combined with lawsone, a henna plant naphthoquinone, against MDR microbes. Lawsone showed significant antimicrobial activities against MDR pathogens in the range of 200-300 µg/mL. Furthermore, Calli oil showed significant antimicrobial activities against MDR bacteria in the range of 180-200 µg/mL, Candida at 220-240 µg/mL and spore-forming Rhizopus fungus at 250 µg/mL. Calli oil's inhibition effect on Rhizopus , the major cause of the lethal infection mucormycosis, stands for 72 h, followed by an extended irreversible white sporulation effect. The combination of Calli oil with lawsone enhanced the antimicrobial activities of each individual alone by at least three-fold, while incorporation of both natural products in a liposome reduced their toxicity by four- to eight-fold, while maintaining the augmented efficacy of the combination treatment. We map the antimicrobial activity of Calli oil to its major component, a benzaldehyde derivative. Green synthesis of gold (CB-AuNps) and silver (CB-AgNps) nanoparticles using Cibotium barometz root extract was highlighted. CB-AuNps were synthesized almost instantly and CB-AgNps were formed after 25 min in a heated aqueous extract. The formation of CB-AuNps and CB-AgNps was detected at 548 and 412 nm; they were spherical with crystallite sizes of 6 nm and 23 nm, respectively. CB-AgNps were further investigated for their antimicrobial activity against Escherichia, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrzyl (DPPH) free radicals was demonstrated. Lastly, the cytotoxic properties of CB-AuNps and CB-AgNps were explored in murine macrophages (RAW264.7) cells and MCF-7 breast cancer cells. This study demonstrated the prospective biomedical applications of CB-AuNps and CB-AgNps as antioxidant, antimicrobial agents, and drug-delivery agents.

Four selected grains (brown rice, oat, sorghum, and millet) were subjected to germinate and changes in granule morphology, molecular structure, crystalline structure, and physicochemical properties of isolated starch were investigated. The germinated starches showed pits and holes on the surface of the starch granules and the particle size distributions shifted slightly to smaller size as the germination time increased. Germination led to decrease in amylose content, while molecular weights of the germinated starches showed no significant changes. The relative crystallinity of all selected grain starches decreased significantly during germination. Compared to the native starches, the germinated starches had lower retrogradation enthalpy. Brown rice and oat starches exhibited marginal increases in peak viscosities, whereas those of sorghum and millet starches decreased significantly during germination. Amylose leaching of brown rice and oat starches decreased after germination, whereas sorghum and millet starches showed an increase in amylose leaching., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Trees are self-similar structures: their branch lengths and diameters vary allometrically within the tree architecture, with longer and thicker branches near the ground. These tree allometries are often attributed to optimisation of hydraulic sap transport and safety against elastic buckling. Here, we show that these allometries also emerge from a model that includes competition for light, wind biomechanics and no hydraulics. We have developed MECHATREE, a numerical model of trees growing and evolving on a virtual island. With this model, we identify the fittest growth strategy when trees compete for light and allocate their photosynthates to grow seeds, create new branches or reinforce existing ones in response to wind-induced loads. Strikingly, we find that selected trees species are self-similar and follow allometric scalings similar to those observed on dicots and conifers. This result suggests that resistance to wind and competition for light play an essential role in determining tree allometries.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the allelopathy of living Myriophyllum aquaticum and its straw has the same effects; two pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of intercropping using M. aquaticum and its straw on the growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation of Nasturtium officinale. Different planting ratios (1:3, 2:2 and 3:1) of N. officinale and M. aquaticum led to an increase in the biomass of both plant species and increased the Cd content in roots and shoots of N. officinale, but led to a reduction in the Cd content in roots and shoots of M. aquaticum. When the intercropping ratio of N. officinale and M. aquaticum was 3:1, the Cd amount in whole plants reached the maximum of 293.96 μg pot -1 . Mulching the straw of M. aquaticum roots on the soil surface increased the biomass of N. officinale, but mulching the straw of M. aquaticum stems and leaves led to a decrease. Mulching the straw of roots, stems and leaves of M. aquaticum reduced Cd content and amounts in roots and shoots of N. officinale. Intercropping with M. aquaticum can improve the Cd uptake ability of N. officinale, but mulching M. aquaticum straw can reduce its Cd uptake ability.

A new 5(6→7)abeo-sterol, podosterol (1), together with 20 known compounds, were isolated from the leaves of Podocarpus fleuryi. Their structures were elucidated by means of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Podosterol was assessed for its cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines (HL-60, SMMC-7721, A-549, MCF-7, and SW-480), and the result showed that it had no activity.

To study sesquiterpenes with anti-metastasis breast cancer activity from Chloranthus henryi, ten sesquiterpenes ,zedoarofuran (1), chlorajapolide D (2), 4β, 8β-dihydroxy-5α(H)-eudesm-7(11)-en-8, 12-olide (3), curcolonol (4), lasianthuslactone A (5), chlomultin C (6), (1E,4Z)-8-hydroxy-6-oxogermacra-1(10), 4, 7(11) -trieno-12, 8-lactone (7), shizukanolide E (8) , shizukanolide F (9) , 9α-hydroxycurcolonol (10), and five bis-sesquiterpenes, shizukaol B (11), shizukaol C (12) , cycloshizukaol A (13) , sarcandrolide B (14) , henriol A(15), were isolated by using different kinds of column chromatography methods from the ethyl acetate part of Ch.henryi and their structures were identified based on spectroscopic methods. Compounds 2, 8, 9, and 10 were obtained from the genus Chloranthus for the first time. Compounds 2, 5, 8-10, 12,and 14 were obtained from this plant for the first time. Our previous study reported that the fruit of Gordonia axillaris , an edible wild fruit, possessed strong antioxidant activity. In this study, a microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method was established to extract antioxidants from the fruit of Gordonia axillaris . The influence of five parameters, including ethanol concentration, solvent/material ratio, extraction time, extraction temperature and microwave power, was investigated by single-factor experiments. Three factors, namely ethanol concentration, solvent/material ratio, extraction time, were found to exert a major influence on extraction efficacy, and were further studied by response surface methodology to investigate their interactions. Ethanol concentration of 36.89%, solvent/material ratio of 29.56 mL/g, extraction time of 71.04 min, temperature of 40 °C, and microwave power of 400 W were found to be the optimal condition. The TEAC value was 198.16 ± 5.47 µmol Trolox/g DW under the optimal conditions, which was in conformity to the predicted value (200.28 µmol Trolox/g DW). In addition, the MAE method was compared with two conventional methods (Soxhlet extraction and maceration extraction). Results showed that the antioxidant capacity of the extract obtained by MAE method was stronger than that obtained by maceration (168.67 ± 3.88 µmol Trolox/g DW) or Soxhlet extraction (114.09 ± 2.01 µmol Trolox/g DW). Finally, several phenolic compounds in the extract were identified and quantified by UPLC-MS/MS, which were rutin, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, 2-hydrocinnamic acid, p -coumaric acid, quercetin, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Anredera cordifolia , a climber and member of the Basellaceae family, has long been a traditional medicine used for the treatment of hyperglycemia in China. Two water-soluble polysaccharides, ACP1-1 and ACP2-1, were isolated from A. cordifolia seeds by hot water extraction. The two fractions, ACP1-1 and ACP2-1 with molecular weights of 46.78 kDa ± 0.03 and 586.8 kDa ± 0.05, respectively, were purified by chromatography. ACP1-1 contained mannose, glucose, galactose in a molar ratio of 1.08:4.65:1.75, whereas ACP2-1 contained arabinose, ribose, galactose, glucose, mannose in a molar ratio of 0.9:0.4:0.5:1.2:0.9. Based on methylation analysis, ultraviolet and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, and periodate oxidation the main backbone chain of ACP1-1 contained (1→3,6)-galacturonopyranosyl residues interspersed with (1→4)-residues and (1→3)-mannopyranosyl residues. The main backbone chain of ACP2-1 contained (1→3)-galacturonopyranosyl residues interspersed with (1→4)-glucopyranosyl residues., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Calluna vulgaris, Carex rigida, Deschampsia flexuosa, Nardus stricta and Vaccinium myrtillus are abundant in the vegetation of mountainous areas in Northern and Central Europe. Knowledge of their ability to accumulate increased amounts of metals could be useful in the evaluation of environmental pollution in the alpine tundra of high mountains. Additionally, this investigation may contribute to understanding the rate and direction of recent vegetation change in Karkonosze and similar types of environments. Our investigation revealed that Carex rigida, C. vulgaris and V. myrtillus contain excessive Mn concentrations in shoots with the highest BF for this element compared to the BFs of other elements. C. rigida, with Cu, Mn and Zn concentrations exceeding the toxicity thresholds for plants, seems to be the best metal phytoaccumulator for Nardus stricta grasslands Carici (rigidae)-Nardetum (CrN) and alpine heathlands Carici (rigidae)-Festucetum airoidis (CrFa) associations in the Karkonosze. Based on relevant BFs >1, it can be stated that the following plant available metals were transferred to shoots: Cu, Mn and Ni by C. vulgaris; Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn by C. rigida; Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn by D. flexuosa; Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn by N. stricta and Cu, Mn and Zn by V. myrtillus.

Gene sequences form the primary basis for understanding the relationships among extant plant groups, but genetic data are unavailable from fossils to evaluate the affinities of extinct taxa. Here we show that geothermally resistant fossil cuticles of seed-bearing plants, analysed with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), retain biomolecular suites that consistently distinguish major taxa even after experiencing different diagenetic histories. Our results reveal that similarities between the cuticular biochemical signatures of major plant groups (extant and fossil) are mostly consistent with recent phylogenetic hypotheses based on molecular and morphological data. Our novel chemotaxonomic data also support the hypothesis that the extinct Nilssoniales and Bennettitales are closely allied, but only distantly related to Cycadales. The chemical signature of the cuticle of Czekanowskia (Leptostrobales) is strongly similar to that of Ginkgo leaves and supports a close evolutionary relationship between these groups. Finally, our results also reveal that the extinct putative araucariacean, Allocladus, when analysed through HCA, is grouped closer to Ginkgoales than to conifers. Thus, in the absence of modern relatives yielding molecular information, FTIR spectroscopy provides valuable proxy biochemical data complementing morphological characters to distinguish fossil taxa and to help elucidate extinct plant relationships.

Background: Atherosclerosis is the most common disease of large and medium-sized arteries linked to oxidative stress, dyslipidemia as well as chronic inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential health benefits of Baccaurea angulata (BA) fruit juice on the aorta of diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rabbits, to detect an accumulation of fatty streak and evaluate the percentage of atherosclerotic lesion accrued., Methods: Thirty-five healthy male adults New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to seven different groups. Four groups were fed 1% cholesterol diet and 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mL of BA fruit juice per kg of rabbit daily (atherogenic groups), while the other three groups were fed commercial rabbit pellet and 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mL of juice per kg of rabbit daily (normocholesterolemic groups) for 90 days. The thoracic and abdominal aorta between the heart origin and bifurcation into iliac arteries of all the rabbits were carefully removed and analyzed accordingly., Results: The supplementation of the high-cholesterol diet of hypercholesterolemic rabbits with only 0.5 mL BA/kg rabbit per day significantly (p < 0.001) improved aortic lipid profile, attenuated aortic fatty streak development and reduced intima thickening. Higher BA doses used (1.0 and 1.5 mL/kg rabbit per day) also significantly (p < 0.001) decreased further the development of aortic fatty streaks, reduced the thickening of the tunica intima layer and preserved endothelial healing following arterial injury., Conclusion: Therefore, BA fruit is a potential novel functional food with effective anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic and hypocholesterolemic activities.

Daodi-Ugon is the dried root and rhizome of Helminthostachys zeylanica (L.) Hook. and has been used for centuries in the treatment of inflammation, fever, pneumonia, burns, and various disorders. However, the chromatographic methods to determine the phytochemical composition of H. zeylanica have never been reported. This study not only aims to develop a valid high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and to establish a chromatographic fingerprint for the quality control of H. zeylanica , it also establish the proposed content limits of Quercetin, Ugonin J, and Ugonin M. An HPLC method with a RP 18 column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) was developed for the quantitative analysis of Quercetin, Ugonin J, and Ugonin M in H. zeylanica . A simple gradient of (A) methanol/(B) phosphoric acid in water (5-45 min, 70-80% A; 50-55 min, 80-70% A) was used and 360 nm was selected as the detection wavelength. The average contents and proposed content limits for H. zeylanica were calculated with a t -test and a measurement uncertainty test based on 20 batches of authentic H. zeylanica samples. Limits of detection (LOD), quantification (LOQ), linearity, precision, repeatability, stability, and recovery of the developed method were validated. All of the validation results of quantitative determination and fingerprinting methods were satisfactory. The developed method was then applied to assay the contents of Quercetin, Ugonin J, and Ugonin M and to acquire the fingerprints of all of the collected H. zeylanica samples. At the 99% confidence level, the calculated content limits were 56.45, 112.15, and 277.98 mg/kg for Quercetin, Ugonin J, and Ugonin M, respectively. Those validated HPLC quantitative method, fingerprinting profile, and the proposed content limits of three chemical markers that could be used in the quality control of H. zeylanica in the market., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests.

The aim of this survey was to determine the chemical composition of essential oils (EO) of five conifers acclimated in Corsica by GC(RI), GC-MS and 13 C NMR. L. decidua needle and wood EOs contained as majors components: α- and β-pinenes, germacrene D (needles) and bornyl acetate (wood). The EOs of needles, wood and cones of P. menziesii were characterised by β- and α-pinenes, terpinen-4-ol, sabinene, terpinolene (needles and wood), Δ-3-carene (wood) and limonene (cones). Needles and wood EOs of P. ponderosa contained as major components: β- and α-pinenes, Δ-3-carene (wood) and estragole (needles). S. giganteum EOs of foliage and wood were rather similar and dominated by α-pinene, and safrole. The EOs of leaf, wood and cones from C. japonica were very similar, and exhibited α-pinene, sabinene, β-elemol and kaurene as major constituents. It appeared that EO compositions of some species were different from reported literature data.

Nine samples of essential oil from needles of three conifers of Pinacea family namely Abies pindrow, Picea smithiana and Cedrus deodara collected from three different locations of Himachal Pradesh (India) were evaluated using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 31, 17 and 13 compounds were identified from essential oil of A. pindrow, P. smithiana and C. deodara, respectively. Among the characterised components, monoterpenoid hydrocarbons were predominated. α-Pinene, β-pinene, β-merycene, limonene and camphene were characterised as major components. Oil of C. deodara has significant effect of location on its oil composition. Principle component analysis on gas chromatographic data reveals variation in chemical composition which may be attributed to altitude and environmental conditions.

This work reports the phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic extract obtained from the leaves of Agathis robusta (C. Moore ex F. Muell.) F.M. Bailey. The methodology utilised during this study comprised classical chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Six compounds were identified: agathisflavone (1), 7″-O-methyl-agathisflavone (2), cupressuflavone (3), rutin (4), shikimic acid (5) and (2S)-1,2-Di-O-[(9Z,12Z,15Z)-octadeca-9,12,15-trienoyl]-3-O-β-d-galactopyranosyl glycerol (6). These belong to four major classes of natural compounds: bi-flavonoids (1-3); diglycosidic flavonoids (4); cycloexen-carboxylic acids (5); glycerol-glycolipids (6). To the best of our knowledge, compounds (3-6) were identified for the first time in this study as constituents of A. robusta. Anyway, the majority of these compounds has chemotaxonomic relevance and is mostly in accordance with the current botanical classification of this species. Moreover, they also present several pharmacological properties among which, the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and protective ones are the most important and may explain why this species is used in the ethno-medicinal field.

A preparative two dimensional hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/reversed-phase liquid chromatography (Pre-2D-HILIC/RPLC) method was established to separate and purify the components in Trachelospermum jasminoides . The pigments and strongly polar components were removed from the crude extract after the active carbon decolorization and solid phase extraction processes. A Click XIon column (250 mm×20 mm, 10 μm) was selected as stationary phase and water-acetonitrile as mobile phases in the first dimensional HILIC. Finally, 15 fractions were collected under UV-triggered mode. In the second dimensional RPLC, a C18 column (250 mm×20 mm, 5 μm) was selected and water-acetonitrile was used as mobile phases. As a result, 14 compounds with high purity were obtained, which were further identified by mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Finally, 11 lignan compounds and three flavonoid compounds were obtained. The method has a good orthogonality, and can improve the resolution and the peak capacity. It is significant for the separation of complex components from Trachelospermum jasminoides .

Ionic liquids (ILs) based ultrasonic-assisted extract has been applied for the extraction of essential oil from Persicaria minor leaves. The effects of temperature, sonication time, and particle size of the plant material on the yield of essential oil were investigated. Among the different ILs employed, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate was the most effective, providing a 9.55% yield of the essential oil under optimum conditions (70 ℃, 25 min, IL:hexane ratio of 7:10 (v/v), particle size 60-80 mesh). The performance of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate in the extraction was attributed to its low viscosity and ability to disintegrate the structural matrix of the plant material. The ability of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate was also confirmed using the conductor like-screening model for realistic solvents. This research proves that ILs can be used to extract essential oils from lignocellulosic biomass.

In this work, the mechanism of the Cr(III) sorption by Salvinia auriculata biosorbent was studied in two stages. To understand the influence of the sorption parameters on the Cr(III) uptake, preliminary tests were performed. First, S. auriculata biomass was separately treated with base and acid solutions. Second, acid and base treatment of samples was performed based on the knowledge data base of our group. It was achieved a higher Cr(III) sorption capacity above 15 mg g-1 as associated to an increase of the micro-pores specific area and biosorbent volume. The obtained kinetic data of raw and treated biosorbents were well described by the intra-particle diffusion model. In this model, Cr(III) adsorption onto treated biomass is progressively improved with appearing of different mass transfer zones from out layer up to micro-porous layers. The equilibrium data of raw biomass were best described by the Langmuir isotherm, whereas the equilibrium data of the treated biomass were best fit by a combination of both Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. At low concentrations the adsorption most likely occurred on the outer monolayer, as proposed by the Langmuir model, followed by the adsorption on the micro-porous layers, as validated by the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm.

The association of herbal products with standard antimicrobial drugs has recently gained more attention as a hope to overcome infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms. Here, we investigated for the first time the antimicrobial (antifungal and antibacterial) activity of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of R. echinus against multiresistant strains of bacteria (E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus) and fungi (C. albicans, C. krusei and C. tropicalis), as well as potential to enhance the activity of antibiotics drugs. In addition, both extract were chemically characterized and their toxicity was assessed in Artemia salina. Our results demonstrate that aqueous extract of R. echinus caused a significant increase in the activity of antibiotics gentamicin and imipenem, while the ethanolic extract strongly enhanced the antibiotic activity of gentamicin, amikacin, imipenem and ciprofloxacin against P. aeruginosa. However, neither the ethanolic nor the aqueous extracts significantly affect the antibiotic activity of the drugs when tested against S. aureus. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts indicated ellagic acid, caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid as the major components which can be at least in part responsible for the enhanced activity of antibiotics. None of the extracts showed toxicity in A. salina even at the highest concentration tested (1000 μg/mL). Five previously undescribed hemiterpene glycosides, cibotiumbarosides E-I, and two known hemiterpene glucosides, were isolated from the rhizome of Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm. The structures of cibotiumbarosides E-I were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses and HRMS. The absolute configuration of the aglycone of cibotiumbaroside E was assigned by calculated ECD with the TDDFT method. Cibotiumbarosides F and I both exhibited remarkable hepatoprotective activity against APAP-induced acute liver damage in vitro, which were more effective than the positive control, bicyclol. The present study was focused on the preparation of gold, silver, and gold-silver-alloy nanoparticles using Rhodomyrtus tomentosa acetone extract (RAE). The synthesized nanoparticles showed the surface plasmon resonance absorption peak corresponding to gold and silver nanoparticle. However, Au-Ag-Alloy nanoparticles showed the single peak between the peaks of AuNPs and AgNPs. TEM observation ascertained the shape and size of nanoparticles. FTIR results indicated the involvement of RAE for the synthesis and capping of nanoparticles. Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factor linked to the alteration of blood hematology and clinical chemistry associated with the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Previous studies have demonstrated the safety and potential health benefits of Baccaurea angulata (BA) fruit. We hypothesized that the oral administration of BA fruit juice could ameliorate the alteration in the hematological and biochemical biomarkers of diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rabbits. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different doses of BA juice on the hematological and biochemical biomarkers in normo- and hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Thirty-five healthy adult New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to seven different groups for 90days of diet intervention. Four atherogenic groups were fed a 1% cholesterol diet and 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5mL of BA juice per kg of rabbit daily. The other three normal groups were fed a commercial rabbit pellet diet and 0, 0.5, and 1.0mL of BA juice per kg of rabbit daily. Baseline and final blood samples after 90days of repeated administration BA juice were analyzed for hematological parameters while serum, aortic and hepatic lysates were analyzed for lipid profiles and other biochemical biomarkers. The alteration of the hemopoietic system, physiological changes in serum and tissues lipid profiles and other biochemicals resulting from the consumption of a high-cholesterol diet were significantly (P<.05) ameliorated by the administration of BA juice. Improvements of the biomarkers in rabbits were dose-dependent, markedly enhanced at the highest dose of juice (1.5mL/kg/day). Cibotium barometz polysaccharides (CBPS) are one of the most important bioactive components extracted from the Cibotium barometz plant, which belongs to the Dicksoniaceae family. It has been widely used for the treatment of orthopedic diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the molecular mechanisms behind the therapeutic effects of CBPS remain to be clarified. In the present study, the concentration of CBPS was detected by phenol-vitriol colorimetry. Furthermore, the effects stimulated by CBPS on the viability and G1/S cell cycle transition in primary chondrocytes from Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated. A cell viability assay demonstrated that chondrocyte proliferation may be enhanced by CBPS in a dose‑ and time‑dependent manner. The mechanism underlying the promotion of chondrocyte cell cycle was suggested to involve the stimulation of G1 to S phase transition. To further confirm the results, reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses were used to detect the expression of mRNA and protein levels of cyclin D1, cyclin‑dependent kinase 4 and retinoblastoma protein. The results suggested that CBPS may stimulate chondrocyte proliferation via promoting G1/S cell cycle transition. Since osteoarthritis is characterized by deficient proliferation in chondrocytes, the present study indicates that CBPS may potentially serve as a novel method for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

This study was carried out with the objective to investigate the antibacterial activity of Hertia cheirifolia L. extracts against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains including Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), Bacillus licheniformis, Esherichia coli (ATCC 8739), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027), Salmonella enterica (CIP 8039) and Salmonella typhimirium. The results of this antibacterial screening showed that the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts had the best activity against the tested microorganisms. A bioassay-oriented fractionation approach for the more active extract (roots ethyl acetate extract) led to the obtaining five sub-fractions. Furthermore, these sub-fractions were also tested for antimicrobial activity and the best results were obtained for the roots EtOAc sub-fraction (C) with MICs values between 0.039 and 0.156 mg/mL. Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis indicated that the major phenolic components of active (EtOAc) extracts and sub-fraction (C) are fisetin hydrate (82.06%), trans cinnamic acid (63.66%), gallic acid (38.97%) and myricetin (20.92%). Main Conclusion: An 11-residue amino acid sequence, DRGLFDFLGKK, is highly conserved in a subset of dehydrins found across the full spectrum of seed plants and here given the name F-segment. An 11-residue amino acid sequence, DRGLFDFLGKK, is highly conserved in identity and polarity in 130 non-redundant dehydrin sequences representing conifers and all major angiosperm groups. This newly described motif is here given the name F segment based on the pair of hydrophobic F residues at the core of the sequence. The majority of dehydrins previously classified as SK n dehydrins contain one F segment N terminal to the S and K segments and can accordingly be reclassified as FSK n dehydrins. A cysteine-containing variant, GCGMFDFLKK, occurs in a few rosid and asterid taxa. The S segment in this and other dehydrin types also includes previously overlooked conserved features, including a KLHR prefix and charged or G residues within and following the characteristic string of S residues. Secondary structure prediction models indicate that the F segment and S segment prefix may form amphipathic helices that could be involved in membrane or protein binding.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key sensor and regulator of glucose metabolism. Here, we demonstrated that shizukaol F, a natural compound isolated from Chloranthus japonicus, can activate AMPK and modulate glucose metabolism both in vitro and in vivo. Shizukaol F increased glucose uptake in differentiated C2C12 myotubes by stimulating glucose transporter-4 (GLUT-4) membraned translocation. Treatment of primary mouse hepatocytes with shizukaol F decreased the expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 2 (PEPCK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) and suppressed hepatic gluconeogenesis. Meanwhile, a single oral dose of shizukaol F reduced gluconeogenesis in C57BL/6 J mice. Further studies indicated that shizukaol F modulates glucose metabolism mainly by AMPKa phosphorylation activity. In addition, we also found that shizukaol F depolarizes the mitochondrial membrane and inhibits respiratory complex I, which may result in AMPK activation. Our results highlight the potential value of shizukaol F as a possible treatment of metabolic syndrome.

Premise of the Study: This paper investigates the occurrence and evolution of aluminum (Al) accumulation within ferns and lycophytes, which is characterized by Al concentrations above 1000 mg·kg -1 in aboveground plant tissues. We hypothesize that this feature is more common in ferns than in angiosperms, and potentially correlated with growth form and other chemical elements., Methods: Aluminum concentrations were obtained from novel analyses and literature for a total of 354 specimens and 307 species. Moreover, a semiquantitative aluminon test was applied for a subset of 105 species and validated against exact Al measurements., Key Results: Molecular phylogenetic analyses showed that the major Al-accumulating groups were primarily found in the Gleicheniales and Cyatheales, and largely absent in the Polypodiales. At the species and generic level, Al accumulation was typically either absent or present, and mixed results within a single species and genus were limited to less than 30% of the species and genera tested. Epiphytic ferns had significantly lower Al levels than terrestrial ferns, although this finding was not significant after phylogenetic correction. In addition, a significant, positive correlation was found between Al and iron, while Al was negatively correlated with phosphorus and potassium concentrations., Conclusions: Aluminum accumulation is most common outside of the Polypodiales and occurs in 38% of the species studied, indicating that this trait is indeed common within subtropical and tropical ferns, a finding that could be in line with their role as pioneer species on landslides and soils with high levels of soluble Al., (© 2017 Botanical Society of America.)

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of shizukaol B, a lindenane-type dimeric sesquiterpene isolated from the whole plant of Chloranthus henryi, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of BV2 microglial cells in vitro. Our data showed that shizukaol B concentration-dependently suppressed expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), production of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia. Meanwhile, shizukaol B concentration- and time-dependently inhibited LPS-mediated c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1/2 (JNK) activation, but had little effect on extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 or p38 phosphorylation. Furthermore, shizukaol B significantly blocked LPS-induced activator protein-1 (AP-1) activation, evidenced by reduced phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of c-Jun and DNA binding activity of AP-1. Stems are the important residues of Trapa quadrispinosa Roxb., which are abundant in phenolic compounds. Ultrasonic-assisted enzymatic extraction (UAEE) is confirmed as a novel extraction technology with main advantages of enhancing extraction yield and physiological activities of the extracts from various plants. In this study, UAEE was applied to obtain the highest yield of phenolic content, strongest antioxidant, and antitumor activities and to optimize the extraction conditions using response surface methodology (RSM). The extracts from the stems of T. quadrispinosa were characterized by determination of their antioxidant activities through 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazxyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ferric reducing antioxidant capacity (FRAC) methods and of their antitumor activity by MTT method. The selected key independent variables were cellulase concentration ( X ₁: 1.5%-2.5%), extraction time ( X ₂: 20-30 min) and extraction temperature ( X ₃: 40-60 °C). The optimal extraction conditions for total phenolic content (TPC) value of the extracts were determined as 1.74% cellulase concentration, 25.5 min ultrasonic extraction time and 49.0 °C ultrasonic temperature. Under these conditions, the highest TPC value of 53.6 ± 2.2 mg Gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW) was obtained, which agreed well with the predicted value (52.596 mg GAE/g·DW. Furthermore, the extracts obtained from UAEE presented highest antioxidant activities through ABTS, DPPH, TAC and FRAC methods were of 1.54 ± 0.09 mmol Trolox equivalent (TE)/g·DW; 1.45 ± 0.07 mmol·TE/g·DW; 45.2 ± 2.2 mg·GAE/g·DW; 50.4 ± 2.6 μmol FeSO₄ equivalent/g·DW and lowest IC 50 values of 160.4 ± 11.6 μg/mL, 126.1 ± 10.8 μg/mL, and 178.3 ± 13.1 μg/mL against Hela, HepG-2 and U251 tumor cells, respectively. The results indicated that the UAEE was an efficient alternative to improve extraction yield and enhance the antioxidant and antitumor activities of the extracts. The phenolic extracts from the stems of T. quadrispinosa had significant antioxidant and antitumor activities, which could be used as a source of potential antioxidant and antitumor agents.

Chromatographic purification of the n -hexane and dichloromethane extracts of Nuxia oppositifolia aerial parts, growing in Saudi Arabia, resulted in the isolation and characterization of three new labdane-type diterpene acids, 2β-acetoxy-labda-7-en-15-oic acid ( 1 ), 2β-acetoxy-7-oxolabda-8-en-15-oic acid ( 2 ), 2β-acetoxy-6-oxolabda-7-en-15-oic acid ( 3 ), and one new seco-triterpene, 3,4-seco olean-12-en-3,30 dioic acid ( 4 ), together with 10 known lupane, oleanane and ursane-type triterpenes, as well as the common phytosterols, β-sitosterol and stigmasterol ( 5 - 16 ). Their structures have been assigned on the basis of different spectroscopic techniques including 1D and 2D NMR. Moreover, 13 of the isolated compounds were tested on the human cancer cell lines HeLa (cervical), A549 (lung) and MDA (breast), and most of the compounds showed potent cytotoxic activities in vitro.

Oxidative stress is a crucial factor in diabetes, where the abnormal metabolic ambience leads to hyperglycemia resulting in the onset of several vascular complications. Under homeostasis, innate antioxidants efficiently inhibit the oxidative stress, thereby restrain further progression of diabetes. In the present study, a potential antioxidant marker was identified from hepatic tissue of diabetic Wistar rats after oral administration of biogenic gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Diabetic animals treated with GNPs showed increase in insulin level and subsequently reduced the concentration of blood glucose level to normal. Further, GNPs favoured to retain the hepatic enzymatic markers, serum lipid levels and followed by renal biochemical profile in the rats. In addition, GNPs treated rats displayed an elevated level of lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase enzymatic activity. Consequently, GNPs treated rats showed diminished level of histological injury in the hepatic, renal, and pancreatic tissues. Taken together, these results suggested that among the several antioxidant enzymes, catalase elucidated the highest area under curve (AUC) with 0.80 accomplished by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. High-speed countercurrent chromatography combined with preparative high-performance liquid chromatography was successfully used to separate seven phenolic compounds from Stenoloma chusanum Ching. A biphasic solvent system composed of hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water (1:2:1:2, v/v) was used for the first step high-speed countercurrent chromatography separation in elution-extrusion mode. A mobile phase composed of acetonitrile (18%) and pure water (82%) was used for further preparative high-performance liquid chromatography purification. In total, the combined separation yielded seven compounds, including 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde, esculetin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, luteolin, and apigenin, at a purity of over 90%. Esculetin was separated from Stenoloma chusanum Ching for the first time. The analysis of metabolites contained in the male cones of Wollemia nobilis was investigated for the first time in this study. Several diterpenoids of chemosystematic relevance were recognized for the first time from the genus and/or from the Araucariaceae family, namely isocupressic acid (1), acetyl-isocupressic acid (2), methyl (E)-communate (3) and sandaracopimaric acid (4). All these terpenoids are also endowed with interesting biological activities and may play a primary role in the self defence toward herbivores. The presence of a new norlabdane (norlabda-8(16)-12-dien-14,17-diol) trivially named as wollemol (5) was also recognized. Norditerpenes are scarcely distributed in Plant Kingdom and in particular in Gymnosperms and this aspect was discussed. The structure of 5 was determined by extensive NMR analysis employing mono- and bidimensional experiments. The 7-4‴-dimethoxyagathisflavone (6), a biflavonoid already recognized in Araucariaceae and W. nobilis, was also isolated from male cones together with shikimic acid (7), a biogenetic precursor of polyphenolic compounds, besides carbohydrates such as glucose (8) and saccharose (9), and arginine (10) a quite common amino acid., (© 2017 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Pierisketolide A (1) and pierisketones B and C (2 and 3), three diterpenes with an unusual A-homo-B-nor-ent-kaurane carbon skeleton, were isolated from the roots of Pieris formosa. Their structures were characterized by a series of spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). Pierisketolide A (1) exhibited an analgesic effect with a 45% writhe inhibition rate at a dose of 10.0 mg/kg. The plausible biosynthetic pathways of 1-3 are proposed.

The herbal nanoparticles were prepared from shade dried Tridax procumbens plant leaves employing ball milling technique using different process parameters, like ball ratio/size and milling time. The obtained nanoparticles were comprehensively characterised using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy and antimicrobial analysis techniques. The crystallinity of the nanoparticles was retained without altering even though the particle size changes due to milling periods. The antibacterial activities of the prepared herbal nanoparticles against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were explored to understand the influence of particle size on antimicrobial activities and their functional properties. The increase in ball ratio and milling time periods leads to a decrease in nanoparticle size from 114 to 45 nm which in turn increases the antimicrobial activities. The above study confirms that antimicrobial activity relies on nanoparticle size. The observed knowledge on influence of particle size on antimicrobial activities will help to optimise the production of potential herbal nanoparticles for different biomedical applications.

The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oils (EOs) of six conifers harvested in Lebanon, Abies cilicica, Cupressus sempervirens, Juniperus excelsa, Juniperus oxycedrus, Cedrus libani and Cupressus macrocarpa gold crest, were investigated. The EOs were obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus and characterized by GC and GC/MS analyses. A principal components analysis based on Pearson correlation between essential oils chemical analyses was also conducted. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of these essentials oils were determined against a range of bacteria and fungi responsible for cutaneous infections in human, using the broth microdilution technique. The EOs showed the most interesting bioactivity on the dermatophytes species (MIC values 32 - 64 μg/ml). Stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ18O) of tree-ring α-cellulose are important tools in paleoclimatology, ecology, plant physiology and genetics. The Multiple Sample Isolation System for Solids (MSISS) was a major advance in the tree-ring α-cellulose extraction methods, offering greater throughput and reduced labor input compared to traditional alternatives. However, the usability of the method for resinous conifer species may be limited by the need to remove extractives from some conifer species in a separate pretreatment step. Here we test the necessity of pretreatment for α-cellulose extraction in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.), and the efficiency of a modified acetone-based ambient-temperature step for the removal of extractives (i) in loblolly pine from five geographic locations representing its natural range in the southeastern USA, and (ii) on five other common coniferous species (black spruce (Picea mariana Mill.), Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa D.)) with contrasting extractive profiles. The differences of δ13C values between the new and traditional pretreatment methods were within the precision of the isotope ratio mass spectrometry method used (±0.2‰), and the differences between δ18O values were not statistically significant. Although some unanticipated results were observed in Fraser fir, the new ambient-temperature technique was deemed as effective as the more labor-consuming and toxic traditional pretreatment protocol. The proposed technique requires a separate acetone-inert multiport system similar to MSISS, and the execution of both pretreatment and main extraction steps allows for simultaneous treatment of up to several hundred microsamples from resinous softwood, while the need of additional labor input remains minimal.

Krishnadimer A (1a), a C 2 -symmetric limonoid dimer representing a new class of axially chiral nonbiaryl natural products, was isolated and biomimetically semisynthesized by atroposelective 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone-mediated dienol-oxidative coupling. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electronic circular dichroism spectral analysis on the synthesized 1a unambiguously established its absolute configuration, including the P-configuration of the C15-C15' central axis. Antitumor investigations of the synthesized dimers 1a, 2a, and 2b revealed the large impact of axial chirality on bioactivities.

Stauntonia hexaphylla (Thunb.) Decne. (Lardizabalaceae) leaves (SHL) have been used traditionally as analgesics, sedatives, diuretics, and so on, in China. To date, no data have been reported on the inhibitory effect of SHL and its constituents on rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Therefore, the inhibitory effect of compounds isolated from SHL extract on RLAR and AGEs was investigated to evaluate potential treatments of diabetic complications. The ethyl acetate (EtOAC) fraction of SHL extract showed strong inhibitory activity on RLAR and AGEs; therefore, EtOAc fraction (3.0 g) was subjected to Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, for further fractionation, with 100% MeOH solvent system to investigate its effect on RLAR and AGEs. Phytochemical investigation of SHL led to the isolation of seven compounds. Among the isolated compounds, chlorogenic acid, calceolarioside B, luteolin-3'- O - β -D-glucopyranoside, quercetin-3- O - β -D-glucopyranoside, and luteolin-7- O - β -D-glucopyranoside exhibited significant inhibitory activity against RLAR with IC 50 in the range of 7.34-23.99  μ M. In addition, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) propionic acid, neochlorogenic acid, and luteolin-3'- O - β -D-glucopyranoside exhibited the most potent inhibitory activity against formation of AGEs, with an IC 50 value of 115.07-184.06  μ M, compared to the positive control aminoguanidine (820.44  μ M). Background: Mangiferin, was identified in the crude methanol extract, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol fractions of Aphloia theiformis (Vahl.) Benn., Objective: This study aimed to analyze the plausible binding modes of mangiferin to key enzymes linked to diabetes type 2 (DT2), obesity, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, and urolithiasis using molecular docking., Method: Crystallographic structures of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, glycogen phosphorylase (GP), pancreatic lipase, cholesterol esterase (CEase), angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE), acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), and urease available on the Protein Databank database were docked to mangiferin using Gold 6.0 software., Results: We showed that mangiferin bound to all enzymes by π-π and hydrogen bonds mostly. Mangiferin was docked to both allosteric and orthosteric sites of α-glucosidase by π-π interactions. However, several hydrogen bonds were observed at the orthosteric position, suggesting a preference for this site. The docking of mangiferin on AChE with the catalytic pocket occupied by paraoxon could be attributed to π-π stacking involving amino acid residues, Trp341 and Trp124., Conclusion: This study provided an insight of the molecular interaction of mangiferin with the studied enzymes and can be considered as a valuable tool for designing new drugs for better management of these diseases., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.org.)

Little attention has been paid to the uptake of 137 Cs in natural forests under low levels of the isotope fallout when no immediate ecological danger presents. Here we present the extended assessments of the soil-to-plant and canopy-to-litter flows of 137 Cs recently evaluated in a native Siberian forested area. The area undergoes a typical after-fire long term succession, with light-conifer upper story being followed by undergrowth of Siberian fir and other dark-conifer species. The one-year-old needles of Siberian fir were found to accumulate the largest concentration of the isotope, 4.10 Bq/kg oven-dry weight during the first growth season, as compared with older needles that accumulated 4.67 Bq/kg oven-dry weight in 2-3 years of growth. Based on these data an approach was developed that, hypothetically, can allow one to estimate the 137 Cs activity concentration in soil solutions. Direct activity measurements in the soil solutions were not possible. The isotope activity in soil solutions was estimated to be 0.0061-0.0105 Bq/L. Based on the original data from the litter fall the annual flow of the isotope from the upper canopy to on-ground litter was found to be 0.42-0.84 Bq/m 2 . The amount of 137 Cs that returns yearly back from canopy with falling litter was estimated to be 0.012-0.015% of the total soil isotope content. A combination of the estimations obtained in our study with the values of global 137 Cs fallout allowed us to assess the ages (the time of formation) of horizons of the soils in the area., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Little is known about rare earth element (REE) migration in gullies in Southeast China. We examine the concentration and distribution of REE, soil variables, and correlations among REE and soil variables field investigation, laboratory measurement, and statistical analysis in the three gullies with different Dicranopteris dichotoma covers in the Huangnikeng gully group, Changting County, Southeast China. We show that the REE pattern in gullies is typical of red soil in Southeast China. REE migrate severely in gullies with low vegetation cover, REE migrate from higher sites to lower sites under the influence of water flow and gravity, and gullies can be considered an important REE source. Dicranopteris dichotoma can succeed in gullies and affect part of soil variables, organic C and pH can play an important role in REE migration in gullies, and Dicranopteris dichotoma is a recommended plant for effectively controlling REE migration and gully erosion. The leaves of Cyclosorus extensa are used in the preparation of rice beer in Assam, India. The optimal conditions of time and temperature of fermentation for extraction of bioactive compounds from the dried leaves were obtained using response surface methodology. The central composite rotatable design was used and 13 experimental runs based on two-factor-five-level design were generated and performed for each of the solvents. The independent variables were extraction time (12 and 48 h) and temperature (25 and 55°C). The responses studied were total polyphenol content, radical scavenging activity, antibacterial activity, and antifungal activity. The analysis of variance of the test data was performed and the sequential sum of squares, F-value, R 2 , and adjusted R 2 were deduced. The predicted models for all the response variables were adequately fitted to the observed experimental data (p ≤ 0.001). The maximum extraction of bioactive compounds under the optimum conditions of extraction temperature and time for hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and distilled water were found to be 25°C for 29.43 h, 28.28°C for 41.27 h, 43.95°C for 29.61 h, and 55.00°C for 48.00 h, respectively. It was also observed that the solubility of the polyphenols was higher in methanol, followed by ethyl acetate, and the highest antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was shown by the ethyl acetate extracts.

Pseudostellariae Radix (PR) is an important traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is consumed commonly for its positive health effects. However, the chemical differences of PR from different cultivated fields and germplasms are still unknown. In order to comprehensively compare the chemical compositions of PR from different cultivated fields, in this study, ¹H-NMR-based metabolomics coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to investigate the different metabolites in PR from five germplasms (jr, zs1, zs2, sb, and xc) cultivated in traditional fields (Jurong, Jiangsu, JSJR) and cultivated fields (Zherong, Fujian, FJZR). A total of 34 metabolites were identified based on ¹H-NMR data, and fourteen of them were found to be different in PR from JSJR and FJZR. The relative contents of alanine, lactate, lysine, taurine, sucrose, tyrosine, linolenic acid, γ-aminobutyrate, and hyperoside in PR from JSJR were higher than that in PR from FJZR, while PR from FJZR contained higher levels of glutamine, raffinose, xylose, unsaturated fatty acid, and formic acid. The contents of Heterophyllin A and Heterophyllin B were higher in PR from FJZR. This study will provide the basic information for exploring the influence law of ecological environment and germplasm genetic variation on metabolite biosynthesis of PR and its quality formation mechanism.
