Content variability was previously suggested to promote stronger learning effects in cognitive training whereas less variability incurred transfer costs (Sabah et al. Psychological Research, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-018-1006-7 , 2018). Here, we expanded these findings by additionally examining the role of learners' control in short-term task-switching training by comparing voluntary task-switching to a yoked control forced task-switching condition. To this end, four training conditions were compared: (1) forced fixed content, (2) voluntary fixed content, (3) forced varied content, and (3) voluntary varied content. To further enhance task demands, bivalent stimuli were used during training. Participants completed baseline assessment commencing with task-switching and verbal fluency blocks, followed by seven training blocks and last by task-switching (near transfer) and verbal fluency (far transfer) blocks, respectively. For the baseline and transfer task-switching blocks, we used the exact same baseline and first transfer block from Sabah et al. (Psychological Research, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-018-1006-7 , 2018), employing univalent stimuli and alternating-runs task sequence. Our results pointed again to the contribution of content variability to task-switching performance. No indications for far transfer were observed. Allowing for learners' control was not found to produce additional transfer gains beyond content variability. A between-study comparison suggests that enhanced task demands, by means of bivalency, promoted higher transfer gains in the current study when compared to Sabah et al. (Psychological Research, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00426-018-1006-7 , 2018). Taken together, the current results provide further evidence to the beneficial impact of variability on training outcomes. The lack of modulatory effect for learners' control is discussed in relation to possible methodological limitations.

In this paper, we trained people to produce 90° mean relative phase using task-appropriate feedback and investigated whether and how that learning transfers to other coordinations. Past work has failed to find transfer of learning to other relative phases, only to symmetry partners (identical coordinations with reversed lead-lag relationships) and to other effector combinations. However, that research has all trained people using transformed visual feedback (visual metronomes, Lissajous feedback) which removes the relative motion information typically used to produce various coordinations (relative direction, relative position; Wilson and Bingham, in Percept Psychophys 70(3):465-476, 2008). Coordination feedback (Wilson et al., in J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform 36(6):1508, 2010) preserves that information and we have recently shown that relative position supports transfer of learning between unimanual and bimanual performance of 90° (Snapp-Childs et al., in Exp Brain Res 233(7), 2225-2238, 2015). Here, we ask whether that information can support the production of other relative phases. We found large, asymmetric transfer of learning bimanual 90° to bimanual 60° and 120°, supported by perceptual learning of relative position information at 90°. For learning to transfer, the two tasks must overlap in some critical way; this is additional evidence that this overlap must be informational. We discuss the results in the context of an ecological, task dynamical approach to understanding the nature of perception-action tasks.

In recent years, deep learning has emerged as a powerful tool for developing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems. However, for deep learning models trained entirely on the data from a specific individual, the performance increase has only been marginal owing to the limited availability of subject-specific data. To overcome this, many transfer-based approaches have been proposed, in which deep networks are trained using pre-existing data from other subjects and evaluated on new target subjects. This mode of transfer learning however faces the challenge of substantial inter-subject variability in brain data. Addressing this, in this paper, we propose 5 schemes for adaptation of a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based electroencephalography (EEG)-BCI system for decoding hand motor imagery (MI). Each scheme fine-tunes an extensively trained, pre-trained model and adapt it to enhance the evaluation performance on a target subject. We report the highest subject-independent performance with an average (N=54) accuracy of 84.19% (±9.98%) for two-class motor imagery, while the best accuracy on this dataset is 74.15% (±15.83%) in the literature. Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) tasks assess the impact of environmental stimuli on instrumental actions. Since their initial translation from animal to human experiments, PIT tasks have provided insight into the mechanisms that underlie reward-based behaviour. This review first examines the main types of PIT tasks used in humans. We then seek to contribute to the current debate as to whether human PIT effects reflect a controlled, goal-directed process, or a more automatic, non-goal-directed mechanism. We argue that the data favour a goal-directed process. The extent to which the major theories of PIT can account for these data is then explored. We discuss a number of associative accounts of PIT as well as dual-process versions of these theories. Ultimately, however, we favour a propositional account, in which human PIT effects are suggested to be driven by both perceived outcome availability and outcome value. In the final section of the review, we present the potential objections to the propositional approach that we anticipate from advocates of associative link theories and our response to them. We also identify areas for future research.

Sleep is involved in both the consolidation of discrete episodes, as well as the generalisation of acquired memories into schemata. Here, we have isolated early versus late periods of sleep in order to replicate previous behavioural findings and to demonstrate: i) that distinct sleep and sleep electroencephalography (EEG) factors influence the generalisation of learned information, and; ii) that the consolidation and generalisation of memory across sleep depends on individual alpha frequency (IAF) and strength of initial encoding. Subjects underwent a night-half protocol with polysomnography (PSG), and completed a Chinese character-English paired associates learning task. Recognition accuracy of learned word-pairs, the extent to which the subject was able to generalise this knowledge, and the extent of explicit transfer of knowledge were measured. Results demonstrate that quality of initial learning determined the relationship between sleep neurophysiology and outcome, with IAF modulating this effect. We also note an effect of IAF in modulating the effect of sleep spindles in determining generalisation of learned materials. Finally, we note a complex relationship between initial learning, IAF and sleep spindle density in determining when information will reach explicit awareness across sleep. Together, these data implicate encoding factors in subsequent offline processing, demonstrate a potential role for individual differences in the EEG and subsequently add to our understanding of the the conditions in which sleep may benefit both memory and learning., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Animals organize reward seeking around aversive events. An abundance of research shows that foot shock, as well as a shock-associated cue, can elicit freezing and suppress reward seeking. Yet, there is evidence that experience can flip the effect of foot shock to facilitate reward seeking. Here we examined cue suppression, foot shock suppression and foot shock facilitation of reward seeking in a single behavioural setting. Male Long Evans rats received fear discrimination consisting of danger, uncertainty, and safety cues. Discrimination took place over a baseline of rewarded nose poking. With limited experience (1-2 sessions), all cues and foot shock suppressed reward seeking. With continued experience (10-16 sessions), suppression became specific to shock-associated cues, foot shock briefly suppressed, then facilitated reward seeking. Our results provide a means of assessing positive properties of foot shock, and may provide insight into maladaptive behaviour around aversive events., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Dual-tasking often requires prioritizing one task over the other. For example, in the psychological refractory period (PRP) paradigm, participants are instructed to initially respond to Task 1 (T1) and only then to Task 2 (T2). Furthermore, in the prioritized processing paradigm (PP), participants are instructed to perform T2 only if T1 was a no-go trial-requiring even more prioritization. The present study investigated the limits of task prioritization. Two experiments compared performance in the PRP paradigm and the PP paradigm. To manipulate task prioritization, tasks were rewarded differently (e.g., high reward for T1, low reward for T2, and vice versa). We hypothesized (a) that performance will improve for the highly rewarded task (Experiments 1 and 2) and (b) that there are stronger reward effects for T1 in the PRP than in the PP paradigm (Experiment 2). Results showed an influence of reward on task prioritization: For T1, high reward (compared to low reward) caused a speed-up of responses that did not differ between the two paradigms. However, for T2, reward influenced response speed selectively in the PP paradigm, but not in the PRP paradigm. Based on paradigm-specific response demands, we propose that the coordination of two motor responses plays a crucial role in prioritizing tasks and might limit the flexibility of the allocation of preparatory capacity.

Inhibitory stimuli can reduce animals' reward seeking in an outcome-specific manner or outcome-general manner. However, we do not understand the factors that determine which of these effects are produced. To address this, we carried out three experiments which examined whether instrumental training with one or multiple outcomes determined the nature of subsequently observed Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT). Rats underwent Pavlovian training to produce inhibitors and excitors for two outcomes using a feature-negative procedure. In Experiment 1, these stimuli were tested for their effects on a single response trained with one of those outcomes in a PIT procedure. Here, stimuli trained as inhibitors and excitors were found to produce outcome-general effects on reward seeking (in addition to an outcome-specific effect for excitors). In Experiment 2, we trained two responses, one for each of the Pavlovian outcomes, and tested the effect of the stimuli on each response individually. This design also produced outcome-general inhibitory and excitatory PIT effects. Experiment 3 followed the procedure of Experiment 2, except for implementation of a shorter Pavlovian training phase and an additional choice test, where both responses were concurrently available. This procedure produced putative inhibitory effects that were also outcome-general. However, outcome-specific excitatory effects were observed, indicating that the general inhibitory results may not be attributable to the duration of Pavlovian training. Overall, this study suggests that variations in the number of response-outcome contingencies experienced by animals do not readily determine the specificity of putative inhibitors.

Dual-task performance typically leads to performance impairments in comparison to single tasks (i.e., dual-task costs). The literature discusses the contribution to these dual-task costs due to (1) bottleneck limitations in the dual-component tasks and (2) executive control processes regulating access to this bottleneck. Previous studies investigated the characteristics of executive control processes primarily triggered by external stimulus information. In the present study, however, we investigated the existence as well as the characteristics of internally triggered and driven endogenous control processes to regulate bottleneck access. In detail, we presented dual-task blocks with varying task orders and informed participants in advance about repetitions of the same task order as well as switches between different task orders (i.e., task-order repetitions and switches were predictable). Experiment 1 demonstrated that task-order information and an increased preparation time generally increase the efficiency for endogenous task-order control and improves preparation for task-order switches. This finding is basically consistent with the assumption of the existence of endogenous control processes. Experiment 2, however, did not provide evidence that this endogenous control is related with working-memory maintenance mechanisms. Experiment 3 showed that endogenous control does not only fully complete task-order preparation but also requires exogenous, stimulus-driven components.

Behaviour occurs not as isolated incidents, but within an ongoing sequence of events. The task-switching paradigm provides a useful way to investigate the impact of different events upon subsequent performance. An implication of two-stage task-switching models is that preparing a task without performing it might affect task readiness only to a limited extent. However, recent research has surprisingly shown larger switch costs following preparation ("cue-only" trials) than following performance ("completed" trials). We set out to conduct a rigorous comparison of the size of switch costs following cue-only versus completed trials. In Experiments 1 and 2, we controlled the timing between critical trial events. This had the effect of roughly equating, but not reversing, the relative size of switch costs. In Experiment 3, we restructured the paradigm to equate the predictability of cue and target events. Switch costs following cue-only trials were now smaller than those following completed trials. These studies confirm that task preparation alone is sufficient to drive subsequent switch costs. They also indicate that task performance might increase the size of these costs, consistent with two-stage task-switching models. Switch costs appear to be affected by both the timing and predictability of trial events.

Learning transfer (i.e. accelerated learning over a series of structurally related learning tasks) differentiates species and age-groups, but the evolutionary and developmental implications of such differences are unclear. To this end, the relational schema induction paradigm employing tasks that share algebraic (group-like) structures was introduced to contrast stimulus-independent (relational) versus stimulus-dependent (associative) learning processes. However, a theory explaining this kind of relational learning transfer has not been forthcoming beyond a general appeal to some form of structure-mapping, as typically assumed in models of analogy. In this paper, we provide a theory of relational schema induction as a "reconstruction" process: the algebraic structure underlying transfer is reconstructed by comparing stimulus relations, learned within each task, for structural consistency across tasks-formally, the theory derives from a category theory version of Tannakian reconstruction. The theory also applies to non-human studies of relational concepts, thereby placing human and non-human transfer on common ground for sharper comparison and contrast. One of these rapid changes involved students and professors that had to turn the traditional "in presence" classes into online courses facing several problems for educational delivery., Objectives: This work aimed to investigate the factors that affected both teaching/learning effectiveness and general human comfort and wellbeing after the sudden transition from classrooms to eLearning platforms due to COVID-19 in Italy., Methods: A workshop, involving students and experts of Human Factors and Ergonomics, has been performed to identify aspects/factors that could influence online learning. Then, from workshop output and literature studies, a survey composed of two questionnaires (one for students and one for teachers) has been developed and spread out among Italian universities students and professors., Results: 700 people answered the questionnaires. Data have been analysed and discussed to define the most important changes due to the new eLearning approach. Absence of interactions with colleagues and the necessity to use several devices were some of the aspects coming out from questionnaires., Conclusions: The study shows an overview of factors influencing both teaching/learning effectiveness and general human comfort and wellbeing. Results could be considered as a basis for future investigation and optimization about the dependencies and correlations among identified factors and the characteristics of the products/interaction/environment during eLearning courses.

Previous research suggests that preschoolers struggle with understanding abstract relations and with reasoning by analogy. Four experiments find, in contrast, that 3- and 4-year-olds (N = 168) are surprisingly adept at relational and analogical reasoning within a causal context. In earlier studies preschoolers routinely favored images that share thematic or perceptual commonalities with a target image (object matches) over choices that match the target along abstract relations (relational matches). The present studies embed such choice tasks within a cause-and-effect framework. Without causal framing, preschoolers strongly favor object matches, replicating the results of previous studies. But with causal framing, preschoolers succeed at analogical transfer (i.e., choose relational matches). Failure to learn and generalize abstract relational rules has critical implications for education. In this study, we aimed to determine which training conditions facilitate relational transfer in a relatively simple (patterning) discrimination versus a relatively complex (biconditional) discrimination. The amount of training participants received had little influence on rates of relational transfer. Instead, trial-sequencing of the training contingencies influenced relational transfer in different ways depending on the complexity of the discrimination. Clustering instances of relational rules together during training improved transfer of both simpler patterning and more difficult biconditional rules, regardless of individual differences in cognitive reflection. However, blocking all trials of the same type together improved rule transfer only for biconditional discriminations. Individual differences in cognitive reflection were also more predictive of relational rule use under suboptimal training conditions. The results highlight the need for comprehensive accounts of relational learning to consider how learning conditions and individual differences affect the likelihood of engaging in learning relational structures. The current study examined whether the effect of spatial training transfers to the math domain. Sixty-two 6- and 7-year-olds completed an at-home 1-week online training intervention. The spatial-training group received mental rotation training, whereas the active control group received literacy training in a format that matched the spatial training. Results revealed near transfer of mental rotation ability in the spatial-training group. More importantly, there was also far transfer to canonical arithmetic problems, such that children in the spatial-training group performed better on these math problems than children in the control group. Such far transfer could not be attributed to general cognitive improvement, since no improvement was observed for non-symbolic quantity processing, verbal working memory (WM), or language ability following spatial training. Spatial training may have benefitted symbolic arithmetic performance by improving visualization ability, access to the mental number line, and/or increasing the capacity of visuospatial WM.

The renewal effect is often explained as a side effect of the extinction context acting as a negative occasion setter. Four experiments tested whether extinction contexts show the selective-transfer property of occasion setters. Experiments 1-3 used a predictive judgment task where participants rated the probability of certain foods (cues) producing gastric malaise (outcomes) in different restaurants (contexts). Experiment 4 used a behavioral suppression task where sensor lights (cues) served as signals to suppress firing responses in certain galaxies (contexts). All 4 (Experiments 1-4) addressed whether a potentially negative occasion-setting context transferred its modulatory power to an extinguished (presumably occasion set) target in the test phase of an ABC renewal design. Experiments 2-4 further assessed the possibility that the extinction context acts as a conditioned inhibitor by testing a simple excitor on a context where extinction occurred. Neither selective (occasion-setting) nor nonselective transfer (conditioned inhibition) was demonstrated. Implications for theories of renewal and occasion-setting are discussed. Previous research has shown that instrumental training can encourage the formation of binary associations between the representations of the elements present at the time of learning, that is, between the discriminative stimulus and the instrumental response (the S-R association), between the stimulus and outcome (the S-O association), and between the response and outcome (the R-O association). Studies with rats have used transfer procedures to explore the effects of discriminative extinction (i.e., extinction that is carried out in the presence of the discriminative stimuli) on these three binary associations. Thus, a reduction in the response rate of the extinguished response (R) can be detected in situations involving a different discriminative stimulus that was associated with the same outcome, and to unextinguished responses controlled by the discriminative stimulus (S) and associated with the outcome (O). These transfer effects suggest that R-O and S-O associations remain active after extinction in nonhuman animals. We carried out an experiment to explore these postextinction transfer effects in humans using a within-subject design. Contrary to nonhuman reports, the S-O association was affected by discriminative extinction, suggesting differences in the associative structure of instrumental conditioning in human and nonhuman animals that should be considered by those therapeutic strategies based in nonhuman animal research aimed to reduce unhealthy instrumental behaviours in human beings. Humans can draw insight from previous experiences to quickly adapt to novel environments that share a common underlying structure. Here we combine functional imaging and computational modeling to identify the neural systems that support the discovery and transfer of hierarchical task structure. Human subjects (male and female) completed multiple blocks of a reinforcement learning task that contained a global hierarchical structure governing stimulus-response action mapping. First, behavioral and computational evidence showed that humans successfully discover and transfer the hierarchical rule structure embedded within the task. Next, analysis of fMRI BOLD data revealed activity across a frontoparietal network that was specifically associated with the discovery of this embedded structure. Finally, activity throughout a cingulo-opercular network supported the transfer and implementation of this discovered structure. Together, these results reveal a division of labor in which dissociable neural systems support the learning and transfer of abstract control structures. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT A fundamental and defining feature of human behavior is the ability to generalize knowledge from the past to support future action. Although the neural circuits underlying more direct forms of learning have been well established over the last century, we still lack a solid framework from which to investigate more abstract, higher-order human learning and knowledge generalization. We designed a novel behavioral paradigm to specifically isolate a learning process in which previous knowledge, rather than directly indicating the correct action, instead guides the search for the correct action. Brain age prediction models using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) and machine learning techniques enable individual assessment of brain aging status in healthy people and patients with brain disorders. However, dMRI data are notorious for high intersite variability, prohibiting direct application of a model to the datasets obtained from other sites. In this study, we generalized the dMRI-based brain age model to different dMRI datasets acquired under different imaging conditions. Specifically, we adopted a transfer learning approach to achieve domain adaptation. To evaluate the performance of transferred models, brain age prediction models were constructed using a large dMRI dataset as the source domain, and the models were transferred to three target domains with distinct acquisition scenarios. The experiments were performed to investigate (1) the tuning data size needed to achieve satisfactory performance for brain age prediction, (2) the feature types suitable for different dMRI acquisition scenarios, and (3) performance of the transfer learning approach compared with the statistical covariate approach. By tuning the models with relatively small data size and certain feature types, optimal transferred models were obtained with significantly improved prediction performance in all three target cohorts (p ​< ​0.001). The mean absolute error of the predicted age was reduced from 13.89 to 4.78 years in Cohort 1, 8.34 to 5.35 years in Cohort 2, and 8.74 to 5.64 years in Cohort 3. The test-retest reliability of the transferred model was verified using dMRI data acquired at two timepoints (intraclass correlation coefficient ​= ​0.950). Clinical sensitivity of the brain age prediction model was investigated by estimating the brain age in patients with schizophrenia. The prediction made by the transferred model was not significantly different from that made by the reference model. Both models predicted significant brain aging in patients with schizophrenia as compared with healthy controls (p ​< ​0.001); the predicted age difference of the transferred model was 4.63 and 0.26 years for patients and controls, respectively, and that of the reference model was 4.39 and -0.09 years, respectively. In conclusion, transfer learning approach is an efficient way to generalize the dMRI-based brain age prediction model. This study is a follow-up to our previous work (Wilkinson & Yang, 2016a), with an intention to examine the long-term maintenance of inhibition practice benefits and the associated near-near transfer effects over a 3.5-year period in older adults. Thirty-six participants from the original multiple task inhibition practice study (Wilkinson & Yang, 2016a), 18 from the practice and 18 from the control group, returned to complete a single follow-up session on the practice and the near-near transfer tasks. The results revealed that after a 3.5-year delay, older adults were able to retain practice benefits in both deletion (i.e., 2-Back) and restraint (i.e., Go-No Go) tasks. Furthermore, 44-65% of the original near-near transfer benefits were retained across all three inhibitory subfunctions at the follow-up session over baseline performance. The findings further extend the literature on the durability of practice and transfer effects of inhibition in older adults. Specifically, the current study demonstrates the long-term practice maintenance in some inhibitory subfunctions (e.g., deletion and restraint tasks) and highlights the retention of near-near transfer gains following a 3.5-year delay in older adults. Rational: The ability of conditioned stimuli to affect instrumental responding is a robust finding from animal as well as human research and is assumed as a key factor regarding the development and maintenance of addictive behaviour., Objectives: While it is well known that stress is an important factor for relapse after treatment, little is known about the impact of stress on conditioned substance-associated stimuli and their influence on instrumental responding., Methods: We administered in the present study a Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) paradigm with stimuli associated with smoking- and chocolate-related rewards using points in a token economy to light to moderate smokers who also indicated to like eating chocolate. After completion of the first two phases of the PIT paradigm (i.e. Pavlovian training and instrumental trainings), participants were randomly allocated to the socially evaluated cold pressor test or a control condition before the final phase of the PIT paradigm, the transfer phase, was administered., Results: The presentation of a smoking-related stimulus enhanced instrumental responding for a smoking-related reward (i.e. 'smoking-PIT' effect) and presentation of a chocolate-related stimulus for a chocolate-related reward (i.e. 'chocolate-PIT' effect) in participants aware of the experimental contingencies as indicated by expectancy ratings. However, acute stress did not change (i.e. neither enhanced nor attenuated) the 'smoking-PIT' effect or the 'chocolate-PIT' effect, and no overall effect of acute stress on tobacco choice was observed in aware participants., Conclusions: The established role of stress in addiction appears not to be driven by an augmenting effect on the ability of drug stimuli to promote drug-seeking.

Adaptive behavior requires finding, and adjusting, an optimal tradeoff between focusing on a current task-set (cognitive stability) and updating that task-set when the environment changes (cognitive flexibility). Such dynamic adjustments of cognitive flexibility are observed in cued task-switching paradigms, where switch costs tend to decrease as the proportion of switch trials over blocks increases. However, the learning mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, here referred to as the list-wide proportion switch effect (LWPSE), are currently unknown. We addressed this question across four behavioral experiments. Experiment 1 replicated the basic LWPSE reported in previous studies. Having participants switch between three instead of two tasks, Experiment 2 demonstrated that the LWPSE is preserved even when the specific alternate task to switch to cannot be anticipated. Experiments 3a and 3b tested for the generalization of list-wide switch-readiness to an unbiased "transfer task," presented equally often as switch and repeat trials, by intermixing the transfer task with biased tasks. Despite the list-wide bias, the LWPSE was only found for biased tasks, suggesting that the modulations of switch costs are task set and/or task stimulus (item)-specific. To evaluate these two possibilities, Experiment 4 employed biased versus unbiased stimuli within biased task sets and found switch-cost modulations for both stimuli sets. These results establish how people adapt their stability-flexibility tradeoff to different contexts. Specifically, our findings show that people learn to associate context-appropriate levels of switch readiness with switch-predictive cues, provided by task sets as well as specific task stimuli.

This work investigates the transfer of motor learning from the eye to the hand and its neural correlates by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a sensorimotor task consisting of the continuous tracking of a virtual target. In pretraining evaluation, all the participants (experimental and control group) performed the tracking task inside an MRI scanner using their right hand and a joystick. After which, the experimental group practiced an eye-controlled version of the task for 5 days using an eye tracking system outside the MRI environment. Post-training evaluation was done 1 week after the first scanning session, where all the participants were scanned again while repeating the manual pretraining task. Behavioral results show that the training in the eye-controlled task produced a better performance not only in the eye-controlled modality (motor learning) but also in the hand-controlled modality (motor transfer). Neural results indicate that eye to hand motor transfer is supported by the motor cortex, the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, which is consistent with previous research focused on other effectors. Cognitive training should not only improve performance of the trained task, but also untrained abilities. Exposure to novelty can improve subsequent memory performance, suggesting that novelty exposure might be a critical factor to promote the effects of cognitive training. Therefore, we combined a 4-week working memory training with novelty exposure. Neuropsychological tests and MRI data were acquired before and after training to analyze behavior and changes in gray matter volume, myelination, and iron levels. In total, 83 healthy older humans participated in one of three groups: Two groups completed a 4-week computerized cognitive training of a two-back working memory task, either in combination with novel or with familiarized nature movies. A third group did not receive any training. As expected, both training groups showed improvements in task specific working memory performance and reaction times. However, there were no transfer or novelty effects on fluid intelligence, verbal memory, digit-span, and executive functions. At the neural level, no significant micro- or macrostructural changes emerged in either group. Our findings suggest that working memory training in healthy older adults is associated with task-specific improvements, but these gains do not transfer to other cognitive domains, and it does not lead to structural brain changes., (© 2020 The Authors. Background: Characteristics of both teachers and learners influence mathematical learning. For example, when teachers use hand gestures to support instruction, students learn more than others who learn the same concept with only speech, and students with higher working memory capacity (WMC) learn more rapidly than those with lower WMC. One hypothesis for the effect of gesture on math learning is that gestures provide a signal to learners that can reduce demand on working memory resources during learning. However, it is not known what sort of working memory resources support learning with gesture. Gestures are motoric; they co-occur with verbal language and they are perceived visually., Methods: In two studies, we investigated the relationship between mathematical learning with or without gesture and individual variation in verbal, visuospatial, and kinesthetic WMC. Students observed a videotaped lesson in a novel mathematical system that either included instruction with both speech and gesture (Study 1) or instruction with only speech (Study 2). After instruction, students solved novel problems in the instructed system and transfer problems in a related system. Finally, students completed verbal, visuospatial, and kinesthetic working memory assessments., Results: There was a positive relationship between visuospatial WMC and math learning when gesture was present, but no relationship between visuospatial WMC and math learning when gesture was absent. Rather, when gesture was absent, there was a relationship between verbal WMC and math learning., Conclusion: Providing gesture during instruction appears to change the cognitive resources recruited when learning a novel math task.

Background and Aims: Strategic games, such as poker, require gamblers to develop several skills to perform better than others and to expect a potential gain. Players must remain as unpredictable and unreadable as possible by inhibiting the expression of their emotions in response to both good and bad poker events. The aim of the present study was to compare several aspects of the inhibition process in experienced poker gamblers and controls to better understand how inhibitory control is involved in poker performance., Methods: Thirty experienced non-pathological poker gamblers (EG) and thirty healthy controls with no or limited poker experience (HC) completed 3 cognitive tasks. Each task measured a specific type of inhibition: motor inhibition [Go/No-Go task], verbal inhibition [Hayling Sentence Completion Task] and expressive inhibition [expressive suppression task, which combines subjective, expressive (facial EMG) and physiological (skin conductance, heart interbeat interval, cardiovascular and respiratory activation) measures of emotional experience]. Linear mixed models with random effects were performed., Results: Inhibitory control skills were similar between the two groups, regardless of the form of inhibition tested. The only difference observed in EG was a higher ability to partially suppress the physiological expression of emotion. However, this difference was only present for negative and positive emotional induction and was not maintained for emotional induction related to poker situations., Discussion and Conclusions: The development of specific inhibition skills in experienced poker gamblers was not supported and raises questions about the transferability of poker skills previously discussed in the literature.

The human nervous system displays such plasticity that we can adapt our motor behavior to various changes in environmental or body properties. However, how sensorimotor adaptation generalizes to new situations and new effectors, and which factors influence the underlying mechanisms, remains unclear. Here we tested the general hypothesis that differences across participants can be exploited to uncover what drives interlimb transfer. Twenty healthy adults adapted to prismatic glasses while reaching to visual targets with their dominant arm. Classic adaptation and generalization across movement directions were observed but transfer to the non-dominant arm was not significant and inter-individual differences were substantial. Interlimb transfer resulted for some participants in a directional shift of non-dominant arm movements that was consistent with an encoding of visuomotor adaptation in extrinsic coordinates. For some other participants, transfer was consistent with an intrinsic coordinate system. Simple and multiple regression analyses showed that a few kinematic parameters such as peak acceleration (or peak velocity) and variability of movement direction were correlated with interlimb transfer. Low peak acceleration and low variability were related to extrinsic transfer, while high peak acceleration and high variability were related to intrinsic transfer. Motor variability was also positively correlated with the magnitude of the after-effect systematically observed on the dominant arm. Overall, these findings on unconstrained movements support the idea that individual movement features could be linked to the sensorimotor adaptation and its generalization. The study also suggests that distinct movement characteristics may be related to different coordinate frames of action representations in the nervous system.

Purpose: To determine whether unilateral leg whole-body vibration (WBV) strength training induces strength gain in the untrained contralateral leg muscle. The secondary aim was to determine the potential role of spinal neurological mechanisms regarding the effect of WBV exercise on contralateral strength training. Materials and Methods: Forty-two young adult healthy volunteers were randomized into two groups: WBV exercise and Sham control. An isometric semi-squat exercise during WBV was applied regularly through 20 sessions. WBV training was applied to the right leg in the WBV group and the left leg was isolated from vibration. Sham WBV was applied to the right leg of participants in the Control group. Pre- and post-training isokinetic torque and reflex latency of both quadricepses were evaluated. Results: The increase in the strength of right (vibrated) knee extensors was 9.4 ± 10.7% in the WBV group ( p  = .001) and was 1.2 ± 6.6% in the Control group ( p  = .724). The left (non-vibrated) extensorsvibrated) knee extensors w4 ± 8.4% in the WBV group ( p  = .038), whereas it decreased by 1.4 ± 7.0% in the Control ( p  = .294). The strength gains were significant between the two groups. WBV induced the reflex response of the quadriceps muscle in the vibrated ipsilateral leg and also in the non-vibrated contralateral leg, though with a definite delay. The WBV-induced muscle reflex (WBV-IMR) latency was 22.5 ± 7.7 ms for the vibrated leg and 39.3 ± 14.6 ms for the non-vibrated leg. Conclusions: Chronic WBV training has an effect of the cross-transfer of strength to contralateral homologous muscles. The WBV-induced muscular reflex may have a role in the mechanism of cross-transfer strength.

This study investigated the effects of typicality-based semantic feature analysis (SFA) treatment on generalisation across three levels: untrained related items, semantic/phonological processing tasks, and measures of global language function. Using a single-subject design with group-level analyses, 27 persons with aphasia (PWA) received typicality-based SFA to improve their naming of atypical and/or typical exemplars. Progress on trained, untrained, and monitored items was measured weekly. Pre- and post-treatment assessments were administered to evaluate semantic/phonological processing and overall language ability. Ten PWA served as controls. For the treatment participants, the likelihood of naming trained items accurately was significantly higher than for monitored items over time. When features of atypical items were trained, the likelihood of naming untrained typical items accurately was significantly higher than for untrained atypical items over time. Significant gains were observed on semantic/phonological processing tasks and standardised assessments after therapy. Different patterns of near and far transfer were seen across treatment response groups. Performance was also compared between responders and controls. Responders demonstrated significantly more improvement on a semantic processing task than controls, but no other significant change score differences were found between groups. In addition to positive treatment effects, typicality-based SFA naming therapy resulted in generalisation across multiple levels.

Background: The worked example effect in cognitive load theory suggests that providing worked examples first followed by solving similar problems would facilitate students' learning. Using problem solving-worked example sequence is another way of implementing example-based instruction. Although research has demonstrated the superiority of worked example-problem solving sequence on learning materials that presumably are high in element interactivity for novices, none of the previous studies have compared the two sequences with levels of element interactivity experimentally manipulated in a strictly controlled manner., Aim: The reported study aimed to investigate the effects of levels of element interactivity of the learning tasks and levels of learner prior knowledge on the effectiveness of two alternative example-based sequences, worked example-problem solving versus problem solving-worked example., Sample: Fifty-two Year five students, around 10 to 11 years old, from a primary school in Indonesia participated in Experiment 1, and 96 Year eight students, around 13 to 14 years old, from a secondary school in Indonesia participated in Experiment 2., Methods: 2 (sequences: worked example-problem solving vs. problem solving-worked example) × 2 (levels of element interactivity: low vs. high) experimental design, with the second factor repeatedly measured, was used in the two experiments conducted with learners at different levels of prior knowledge., Result: The results showed the advantage of using worked example-problem solving sequence for learning materials high in element interactivity, especially for novice learners, whereas there were no differences between the worked example-problem solving and problem solving-worked example sequences for learning materials low in element interactivity for more knowledgeable learners., Conclusion: This study not only replicated the results of previous studies, but also extended their findings by experimentally manipulating levels of element interactivity of learning materials., (© 2019 The British Psychological Society.)

Poor sleep in college students compromises the memory consolidation processes necessary to retain course materials. A solution may lie in targeting reactivation of memories during sleep (TMR). Fifty undergraduate students completed a college-level microeconomics lecture (mathematics-based) while listening to distinctive classical music (Chopin, Beethoven, and Vivaldi). After they fell asleep, we re-played the classical music songs (TMR) or a control noise during slow wave sleep. Relative to the control condition, the TMR condition showed an 18% improvement for knowledge transfer items that measured concept integration (d = 0.63), increasing the probability of "passing" the test with a grade of 70 or above (OR = 4.68, 95%CI: 1.21, 18.04). The benefits of TMR did not extend to a 9-month follow-up test when performance dropped to floor levels, demonstrating that long-term-forgetting curves are largely resistant to experimentally-consolidated memories. Spectral analyses revealed greater frontal theta activity during slow wave sleep in the TMR condition than the control condition (d = 0.87), and greater frontal theta activity across conditions was associated with protection against long-term-forgetting at the next-day and 9-month follow-up tests (rs = 0.42), at least in female students. Prism adaptation (PA) has been applied with mixed success as a rehabilitation method of spatial neglect. Results from many single-case and multiple case studies as well as randomised controlled trials do not produce a clear picture of the efficacy of PA. We here tested a new method of PA, by inducing adaptation effects in the virtual reality. Healthy participants were attributed to one of four groups: no deviation, 10-, 20-, or 30-degrees rightward deviation. In contrast to classical wedge prisms, we induced the visual shift progressively. Participants performed two variants of the bisection and the landmark task to measure cognitive transfer of adaptation effects. Pointing error was directly related to the degree of optical deviation, and was greatest immediately following adaptation. Transfer was only observed in the bisection tasks, and only in the 30-degrees group. Due to the gradual induction of the spatial deviation the majority of participants were unaware of the adaptation effects. These findings show that large rightward deviation may affect sensorimotor performance in healthy participants similarly to neglect patients. Moreover, the finding that only participants adapted to 30-degrees showed biased bisection performance suggests that a critical threshold must be reached in order to induce significant visuomotor transfer.

The current project studied the direct, near transfer, and far transfer effects of cognitive flexibility training in two experiments with 117 3-year-olds. In both Experiments 1 and 2, children performed three Dimensional Change Card Sorting (DCCS) tasks in a pre-training/training/post-training design. The training consisted of giving corrective feedback in the training DCCS task. In Experiment 2, in addition, three other executive control tasks were administered during pre-training and post-training. Results showed a direct effect of feedback in the training DCCS task and transfer of this effect to the post-training DCCS task after 1 week with different sorting rules and different stimuli. These findings show that preschoolers learned to switch sorting rules in the context of the DCCS task, independent of the specific sorting rules, and that this effect is not transient. No support was found for transfer to the other executive control tasks. A possible explanation is that the feedback mainly improved rule switching, an ability that is specifically required for performing a cognitive flexibility task but not the other executive control tasks., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Reactive responses to balance perturbations have been shown to be improved by training. This investigation aimed to compare the effects of block and random training perturbation schedules on stability gains of compensatory arm and leg movements in response to unpredictable large-magnitude balance perturbations. Perturbations were produced by means of sudden displacements of the support base, associating mode (rotation, translation, combined), direction, and velocity of platform motion. Healthy young participants were assigned to one of three groups: random, block, and control. For the random group, perturbation sequence was unpredictable. For the block group, each balance perturbation was repeated over blocks of four trials. Controls were tested only, serving as reference of first trial responses in the post-test. Evaluation was made through a scale rating stability of compensatory arm and leg movements (CALM). We probed immediate and persistence gains (1-week retention), in addition to generalizability to perturbations of higher velocity and to dual-tasking (mental subtraction). In the post-test both the block and random groups achieved higher leg and global scores in comparison with controls in the most challenging perturbations. In retention and transfer tests, results for the global score indicated higher values for the random than for the block and control groups. These results support the conclusion that high but not low contextual interference in perturbation-based balance training leads to enduring and generalizable increased stability gains of compensatory limb movements in response to unpredictable balance perturbations.

Frontostriatal dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) increases the risk for working memory (WM) impairment and depression, calling for counteractive measures. Computerised cognitive rehabilitation is a promising option, but targeted training protocols are lacking and lab-based training can be demanding due to the repeated visits. This study tested the feasibility and efficacy of home-based computerised training targeting mainly WM updating in PD. Fifty-two cognitively well-preserved PD patients were randomised to a WM training group and an active control group for five weeks of training (three 30-min sessions per week). WM training included three computerised adaptive WM tasks (two updating, one maintenance). The outcomes were examined pre- and post-training with trained and untrained WM tasks, tasks tapping other cognitive domains, and self-ratings of executive functioning and depression. Home-based training was feasible for the patients. The training group improved particularly on the updating training tasks, and showed posttest improvement on untrained WM tasks structurally similar to the trained ones. Moreover, their depression scores decreased compared to the controls. Our study indicates that patients with mild-to-moderate PD can self-administer home-based computerised WM training, and that they yield a similar transfer pattern to untrained WM tasks as has been observed in healthy older adults.

Using a human Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) task, Alarcón and Bonardi showed that the selective elevation of instrumental responding produced by excitatory transfer cues was reduced when these cues were presented with a conditioned inhibitor (CI), relative to a control cue that was simply preexposed. However, previous research has shown that preexposed cues might also acquire inhibitor-like properties. This study aimed to contrast the inhibitory properties of CIs and preexposed cues, using novel stimuli as controls, in summation and PIT tests. Participants were trained to perform two actions, each reinforced with a distinct outcome (O 1 or O 2 ). Two images were trained as CIs, each signalling the absence of one of the outcomes, by presenting them with a cue that was otherwise followed by that outcome (e.g., A→O 1 , AI→no O 1 ). In contrast, the preexposed cues were simply presented in the absence of the outcomes. In the summation test, participants rated the likelihood of the outcomes in the presence of two independently trained excitatory cues, each presented with a CI, a preexposed cue, or a novel stimulus. Similarly, in the PIT test, participants performed both actions in the presence and absence of these compounds. In the summation test, the CIs and the preexposed cues reduced participants' expectations of the outcomes more than the novel stimuli. However, in the PIT test, only the CIs reduced the selective elevation of responding produced by the transfer cues. These results might reflect distinct properties of stimuli trained as CIs and those simply preexposed.

Targeted training of working memory (WM) may improve performance and modulate brain function in untrained cognitive modalities. Demanding cognitive training protocols that do not target WM may also improve performance on untrained cognitive tests, but the delineation between transfer effects that are unique to WM training and effects that are shared among different cognitive training modalities has not been well-established. To address this, we examined the effects of twenty sessions of either WM training (visual n-back task with letter stimuli) or selective attention training (visual search task with letter array stimuli) on brain function during untrained WM and cognitive control tasks. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were obtained at baseline (pretest) and after the training period (posttest) for two untrained tasks - a Spatial 3-back task measuring spatial WM, and a Go/NoGo Flanker task measuring cognitive control. The n-back training group had more pronounced pretest-to-posttest performance improvements on the Spatial 3-back task compared to the search training group. N-back training was also associated with pretest-to-posttest enhancement of N1 amplitude and reduced N2 latency on trials of the task in which where there was a stimulus match, as well as enhancement of a late positive potential (550-750 msec post-stimulus) for all trials of the task. These ERP effects suggest that n-back training resulted in enhancement of attention to spatial locations, earlier onset of conflict monitoring processes, and changes in the engagement of neural activity during the retention interval, respectively. Both groups had faster reaction time on Go trials of the Go/NoGo Flanker task at posttest compared to pretest. Relatively subtle training-related effects were observed for N2 amplitude on this task, in line with the notion that training (particularly n-back training) was associated with improved conflict monitoring. Further, search training resulted in earlier onset of P2 and P3 latency at posttest compared to pretest. Taken together, the ERP findings for both tasks identify specific cognitive processes that are associated with transfer to untrained tasks after distinct forms of cognitive training., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Spatial skills are associated with mathematics skills, but it is unclear if spatial training transfers to mathematics skills for preschoolers, especially from underserved communities. The current study tested (a) whether spatial training benefited preschoolers' spatial and mathematics skills, (b) if the type of feedback provided during spatial training differentially influenced children's spatial and mathematics skills, and (c) if the spatial training's effects varied by socioeconomic status (SES). Preschoolers (N = 187) were randomly assigned to either a 'business-as-usual' control or one of three spatial training groups (modeling and feedback [MF]; gesture feedback [GF]; spatial language feedback [SLF]). Three-year-olds were trained to construct puzzles to match a model composed of various geometric shapes. New models were created similar to the 2-dimensional trials of the Test of Spatial Assembly (TOSA). Training was given once per week for 5 weeks. Preschoolers were pretested and posttested on 2D and 3D TOSA trials, spatial vocabulary, shape identification, and 2 mathematics assessments. Results indicate that first, any spatial training improved preschoolers' 2D TOSA performance, although a significant interaction with SES indicated improvement was driven by low-SES children. Furthermore, low-SES children showed greatest gains on the 2D TOSA with MF and GF. Second, MF and GF improved low-SES children's performance on the 3D TOSA. Third, only low-SES children with MF saw improvements in far-transfer to mathematics (Woodcock-Johnson: Applied Problems, but not the Test of Early Mathematical Ability). Fitts' Law is a well-studied principle in psychology which holds that movement time (MT) varies with the size and distance of a target across a wide range of tasks. In a recent study, the authors demonstrated that performance on a current trial in a Fitts' Law paradigm is affected by what happens during the previous trial (Tang et al. in Psychon Bull Rev 25(5):1833-1839, 2018). The aim of the present study was to explore how long this trial-to-trial transfer might last and whether or not the transfer would occur between the left and right hands. A series of experiments was carried out using discrete trials, a paradigm in which the current authors and others have previously established that Fitts' Law operates (Fitts and Peterson in J Exp Psychol 67(2):103-112, 1964; Tang et al. 2018). Three inter-trial intervals (3 s, 4 s, and 5 s) were used in separate testing sessions, the order of which was counterbalanced across participants. In addition, trial-to-trial transfer was tested within a single hand and between hands. The results demonstrate that transfer from one trial to the next could bridge 4 s when either the right or the left hand was used and would disappear by 5 s. Moreover, the effect transferred between the two hands. The endpoint accuracy of the current trial was not affected by the previous trial. These findings suggest that the trial-to-trial effect reduces over time and that the transfer of sensorimotor memory or the task set is independent of the particular hand used.

Associations between cognitive and motor timing performance are documented in hundreds of studies. A core finding is a correlation of about - 0.3 to - 0.5 between psychometric intelligence and time interval production variability and reaction time, but the nature of the relationship remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether this relation is subject to near and far transfer across a battery of cognitive and timing tasks. These tasks were administered pre- and post-five daily 30 min sessions of sensorimotor synchronization training with feedback for every interval. The training group exhibited increased sustained attention performance in Conners' Continuous Performance Test II, but no change in the block design and figure weights subtests from the WAIS-IV. A passive control group exhibited no change in performance on any of the timing or cognitive tests. These findings provide evidence for a direct involvement of sustained attention in motor timing as well as near transfer from synchronization to unpaced serial interval production. Implications for the timing-cognition relationship are discussed in light of various putative timing mechanisms.

The present experiment examined individual and age differences in the dynamics of category learning strategies. Participants learned categories determined by a disjunctive rule with relational features through a feedback training procedure. During training, participants responded to strategy probes following each block to provide online assessment of the extent to which rule- and exemplar-based strategies were used throughout the training period. We introduced this measure as an alternative to model-based approaches to assessing individual differences in strategy use during training. Following training, participants classified ambiguous transfer objects that were assumed to distinguish between earlier use of rule- and exemplar-based learning strategies. We included this measure to obtain a relatively objective index of strategy use during training. Next, participants provided global ratings of their use of rule- and exemplar-based strategies during training. Results showed that strategy preferences expressed on the final training block predicted categorisation of ambiguous transfer objects better than global strategy reports. In addition, we utilised the block-by-block strategy reports to investigate the dynamics of learners' strategy preferences over the course of training. The findings revealed greater fluidity in strategy preferences for both younger and older adults than has been previously documented in the category learning literature. The novel block-by-block strategy reports in conjunction with the transfer-based approach allowed for a more nuanced examination of individual and age differences in strategy use and categorisation performance.

Two experiments were designed to study the role of emotional impulsiveness in action control and selection, involving healthy young women participants. In Experiment 1, the effects of both outcome devaluation and Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) were assessed on instrumental responding. In Experiment 2, we further explored the effect of outcome devaluation on outcome-specific PIT. The role of emotional impulsivity, specifically negative urgency (NU), was also evaluated in both experiments using a self-reported measure (UPPS-P scale, Spanish short version). Experiment 1 showed both outcome devaluation and outcome-specific PIT effects, which were positively inter-correlated and negatively correlated with scores in NU. Experiment 2 found an effect of outcome devaluation on outcome-specific PIT, which was negatively correlated with scores on NU. These results highlight the relevance of considering individual differences in affect-driven impulsivity, specifically NU, when addressing failures in action control and selection (proneness to habit). Moreover, these findings suggest that, at least with the procedure used in these experiments, outcome-specific PIT may be based on a goal-directed process that is under the participant's control.

Transferability of cognitive rehabilitation is a crucial point for efficacy. The purpose of the present study is to determine the transfer effect of cognitive rehabilitation to the untrained cognitive domains and behavior in children with attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thirty children with ADHD randomly allocated into two intervention and control groups. The intervention group received cognitive rehabilitation in 12-15 sessions. Analyses indicated that the experimental group shows an improvement in the trained domain. The result found a lack of near transfer to selective attention and inhibitory control with a successful far transfer effect to the risky decision making and delay discounting. Furthermore, the transfer occurred to behavioral symptoms of the intervention group. Attention and working memory training decrease delay discounting and delay discounting. The near transfer is not a prerequisite of far transfer. It is currently unclear whether the acquisition of negative stimulus valence in evaluative and fear conditioning paradigms is interrelated or independent. The present study used a transfer paradigm to address this question. Three groups of participants were trained in a picture-picture evaluative conditioning paradigm before completing acquisition of differential fear conditioning using graphical shapes as conditional stimuli (CSs). In group congruent, the shape used as CS+ (paired with the US during fear conditioning) was paired with negative pictures, whereas the shape used as CS- (presented alone during fear conditioning) was paired with positive pictures. In group incongruent, the shape used as CS+ was paired with positive pictures, whereas the shape used as CS- was paired with negative pictures. In group different, different shapes were employed in evaluative and fear conditioning. Acquisition of differential electrodermal responses emerged within fewer acquisition trials in groups congruent and different than in group incongruent. Transfer of evaluative learning across paradigms was evident only after removal of participants who failed to display evaluative conditioning. The current research indicates that stimulus valence acquired during evaluative conditioning transfers to fear conditioning and will differentially affect the acquisition of fear learning as indexed by subjective evaluations and electrodermal responses. In this study, a new item response theory model is developed to account for situations in which respondents overreport or underreport their actual opinions on a positive or negative issue. Such behavior is supposed to be a result of deception and transfer mechanisms. In the proposed model, this behavior is simulated by incorporating a deception term into a multidimensional rating scale model, followed by multiplication by a transfer term, with the two operations performed by an indicator function and a transition matrix separately. The proposed model is presented in a Bayesian framework approximated by Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Through a series of simulations, the parameters of the proposed model are recovered accurately. The methodology is also implemented within an online experimental study to demonstrate the methodology's application.

Cues that signal motivationally significant consequences can elevate responding and bias choice. A task known as Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) has been used to assess the influence of these cues on independently trained responses and to study the effect of drug-related and food-related cues on behavior in adult populations, but it has not yet been employed in children. This study aimed to develop a simple computer task to study PIT in children. Participants, aged 7-11 years, observed a screen in which different pairings of distinct cartoon images and specific outcomes were presented (images of foods and drinks in Experiment 1 and images of pets in Experiment 2). After this, the participants pressed two keys, each consistently reinforced with one of the two outcomes. Finally, the children pressed both keys in the absence of any outcome, and each cartoon image was presented periodically so that the effect of these cues on behavior could be measured. Experiment 1 showed that the cartoons' presentations biased responding toward the key that was trained with the same outcome as the cartoon being presented, that is, outcome-specific PIT. Experiment 2 replicated this finding and also showed that a cartoon trained with an outcome different from that reinforcing the responses elevated performance of both responses relative to a cartoon that was not paired with any outcome in training, that is, general PIT. Much research has shown that humans can allocate attentional control differentially to multiple locations based on the amount of conflict historically associated with a given location. Additionally, once established, these control settings can transfer to nearby locations that themselves have no conflict bias. Here we examined if these control settings also extend to nearby locations that are presented outside of the original frame of reference of biased stimuli. During training, participants first responded to biased flanker stimuli that were likely high conflict in one location and low conflict in another location. Then they were exposed to two sets of unbiased stimuli presented in novel transfer locations outside of the established reference frame of biased stimuli. Across three experiments, attentional control settings transferred beyond the reference frame including when there was a visual border (Experiment 2) or meaningful categorical distinction (Experiment 3) delineating training and transfer locations. These novel findings further support the idea that stimulus-driven attention control can be flexibly allocated, perhaps in a categorical manner.

Animal models reveal that deafferenting forelimb injuries precipitate reorganization in both contralateral and ipsilateral somatosensory cortices. The functional significance and duration of these effects are unknown, and it is unclear whether they also occur in injured humans. We delivered cutaneous stimulation during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map the sensory cortical representation of the intact hand and lower face in a group of chronic, unilateral, upper extremity amputees (N = 19) and healthy matched controls (N = 29). Amputees exhibited greater activity than controls within the deafferented former sensory hand territory (S1f) during stimulation of the intact hand, but not of the lower face. Despite this cortical reorganization, amputees did not differ from controls in tactile acuity on their intact hands. S1f responses during hand stimulation were unrelated to tactile acuity, pain, prosthesis usage, or time since amputation. These effects appeared specific to the deafferented somatosensory modality, as fMRI visual mapping paradigm failed to detect any differences between groups. We conclude that S1f becomes responsive to cutaneous stimulation of the intact hand of amputees, and that this modality-specific reorganizational change persists for many years, if not indefinitely. Objective: The purpose of this meta-analytic review is to examine the role of three work environment support variables (i.e., peer, supervisor, and organizational support) in training transfer and sustainment or long-term use of learned knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs)., Background: Estimates demonstrate that little training is transferred to the job, wasting billions in organizational spending each year and resulting in significant loss to safety and individual and team performance. Prior research shows the importance of a supportive work environment to facilitating transfer; however, we know little of the relative importance of specific support variables. This study seeks to examine the unique roles of distinct support variables in training transfer., Method: A meta-analysis was conducted with multiple regressions to answer three primary research questions., Results: All work environment support variables demonstrate moderate and positive correlations with transfer of training. Furthermore, multiple regressions demonstrate that each factor of the work environment explains unique variance as a predictor, with the model accounting for 32% of transfer and peer support accounting for most of R 2 . Motivation to transfer mediates the relationship between all three work environment support variables and transfer. Furthermore, three support variables are positively related to sustainment, with peer and supervisor support showing the strongest relationships., Conclusion: Findings illuminate the relative contribution of peer, supervisor, and organizational support to transfer and sustainment of training. As transfer continues to be an important yet understudied measure of the effectiveness of workplace training, these findings hold implications for both research and practice.

As scientists, we are keenly aware that if putative causes perfectly covary, the independent influence of neither can be discerned-a "no confounding" constraint on inference, fundamental to philosophical and statistical perspectives on causation. Intriguingly, a substantial behavioral literature suggests that naïve human reasoners, adults and children, are tacitly sensitive to causal confounding. Here, a combination of fMRI and computational cognitive modeling was used to investigate neural substrates mediating such sensitivity. While being scanned, participants observed and judged the influences of various putative causes with confounded or nonconfounded, deterministic or stochastic, influences. During judgments requiring generalization of causal knowledge from a feedback-based learning context to a transfer probe, activity in the dorsomedial pFC was better accounted for by a Bayesian causal model, sensitive to both confounding and stochasticity, than a purely error-driven algorithm, sensitive only to stochasticity. Implications for the detection and estimation of distinct forms of uncertainty, and for a neural mediation of domain-general constraints on causal induction, are discussed.
