Abstract

The application of green roofs on urban buildings is considered to have a positive impact on their thermal behaviour and local microclimatic conditions. According to the literature, their ability for attenuation of storm water run-off as well as their contribution to the building's thermal protection is among the most important benefits of this technique. However, despite the development of computer models that can assist towards analysing the nature of their behaviour, there is still a relative gap in measured data representing long-term period thermal performance. In this paper, the results of a long-term experimental analysis are presented, which attempt to identify the thermal behaviour of a green roof in comparison with a bare flat roof. The results show that in Mediterranean countries, a green roof can contribute substantially to building's energy conservation mainly during the warm period of the year, while its influence during the cold period is negligible. Abstract

Nowadays, subjects such as eco-design requirements, product rating or code compliance with regard to energy efficiency are expanding towards a pan-European level. This leads to the necessity of defining zones within the European region, which share common climatic characteristics and will further facilitate the quick estimation of building energy performance. Towards this direction stands the current paper; it presents an approach for defining climatic zones in Europe on the basis of the amount of heating and cooling degree days. It is applied for the climate classification of selected European cities and is compared with the conventional scheme based solely on heating degree days. Since the approach is orientated mainly towards the assessment of building energy performance, its outcomes are evaluated with regard to the actual heating and cooling energy needs of a reference building unit with office use located in representative cities of the proposed climatic zones and facing the four cardinal orientations. The classification of climatic zones on the basis of both heating and cooling degree days leads to more realistic results, since nowadays cooling needs form a substantial part of the energy balance of the building, especially in the Mediterranean regions. Abstract

This paper investigates the public and professional attitudes towards an innovative energy efficient facade refurbishment system, in Mediterranean countries, including Greece, Italy and Spain. Two types of multiple choice questionnaires were developed and addressed to two different target groups: building professionals and users. The survey questionnaire was created so as to elicit information on the interviewee’s background and explore attitudes and perceptions towards the proposed system. Results signify that both potential users and professionals are generally positive towards the system’s energy performance; however, the increased cost of acquisition, maintenance issues and the replacement of natural ventilation by mechanical means consist significant constraints that induce hesitations for the users. Professionals are willing to apply a ventilated facade in a future project but the lack of the corresponding knowledge may be an important obstacle to face.

126. Coupling a Building Energy Simulation Tool with a Microclimate Model to Assess the Impact of Cool Pavements on the Building's Energy Performance Application in a Dense Residential Area.

Abstract

Replacing conventional pavements with the corresponding high albedo ones constitutes a well-known technique to improve outdoor thermal environment of modern cites. Since most of the existing studies assess the impact of the high albedo pavements at the pedestrian's height and with respect to thermal comfort, this study aims to examine the effect of the application of highly reflective pavements on the heating and cooling energy needs of a building unit, located inside a dense urban area. Aiming at a higher accuracy of the energy performance simulations, an integrated computational method between ENVI-met model, Meteonorm weather data generator and Energy Plus software is established, to consider the site-specific microclimatic characteristics of the urban areas. The analysis is performed both for the design and the aged albedo values as significant changes may occur due to aging process. The analysis revealed that the application of cool materials on the ground surfaces only marginally affects the energy performance of the examined building unit, both for the design and the aged albedo value; changes on the annual heating and cooling energy demand, for both albedo scenarios did not exceed 1.5% revealing the limited potential of cool pavements regarding the improvement of the energy performance of urban building units. Abstract

In this paper the heating and cooling energy consumption of a typical single-family house is calculated for five selected locations in Cyprus. Hourly calculations are performed using the EnergyPlus software. The results are translated in oil or LPG and electricity consumption, assuming that the typical building in Cyprus is equipped with an oil-fired or LPG-fired boiler for heating and local air-to-air split-type heat pumps for cooling. The same energy needs are assumed to be covered by an alternative system, i.e. a vertical closed loop ground heat exchanger combined with a water-to-water heat pump system for heating and cooling. The ground source heat pump system is dimensioned with the aid of the EED 3.0 software, analyzed using an in-house developed and validated simulation code, and as a result the electricity consumption of the system is calculated. Based on the resulting fuel consumption of the alternative system, the primary energy consumption and the corresponding emissions are determined, while a financial analysis is also performed. The results prove that significant energy, environmental and economic benefits can be achieved.

Abstract

People are spending an increasing amount of time inside buildings. Working spaces have a very strong influence on peoples’ activities and well- being. Therefore, the quality of indoor environment is important for all occupants, as it can contribute to illness and lack of productivity. An increasing number of office buildings with glass facades impact not only internal occupants, but also external users who spend time around those buildings. This paper aims to assess the interaction of internal and external users and the glass façades of office buildings in Zagreb, Croatia. The focus of this research is not only physical parameters of glass facade: materials, proportions, colours, thermal and acoustic characteristics, airtightness, and its impact on occupants. The relationship between inside and outside is essential for spatial awareness. Having access to views of the outside and providing natural light are important for occupants’ well-being. Solar shading system, anti- glare protection, the tint of the glass, transparency and translucency of glass façade also significantly affect external users and their perception of the building. The graduate course 'Architecture and Technology 1' at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb, aims to educate master students on assessing the environmental performance of existing buildings. Analysing examples of built office buildings with glass facades and the results of student survey of internal and external users of those buildings, this paper discusses working conditions, indoor and outdoor atmosphere, technical solutions, as well as architectural approaches in accordance with implementation of principles of sustainable development. The results of this research should provide useful information on users’ satisfaction, well-being, and requirements for future application in glass facade design for office buildings.

Abstract

Sustainability, environmental performance and energy efficiency have become main subjects not only for the profession of architecture, but for every profession, as well. Within the scope of this conference, and more specifically the overall energy performance of buildings, the section dealing with the higher technical education has special relevance. The need for incorporating sustainability and energy parameters in higher education has been recognised for some considerable time now. As academic staff members teaching in technical courses at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb, we are always under time pressure in keeping up with the newest performances in structure and technology facing the question: How to realise and improve the graduate framework and the learning and teaching plan of environmental issues in the courses that we teach? The paper examines available study programme ‘Architecture and Urban Studies’ within the master degree programme at the Department of Architectural Technology and Building Science. The new compulsory course Architecture and Technology 1 (AT1_2018/2019) addresses the topics of building energy consumption and emissions, rational use of energy, environmental impact, high performance efficiency and sustainable building. By comparing a selection of students’ works in different groups conducted experimentally for the first time, the paper will discuss the project approach, give a critical evaluation of the selected case studies and some lessons learned from attempts to incorporate environmental issues into the unit syllabus. Through this paper we attempt to share information and deepen the discussion within the academic community. Finally, as a contribution, it is expected to increase the ways by which parameters of energy and environmental sustainability can become an integral guiding principle in the design and delivery of all academic courses offered at the Faculty.
