The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of two convolutional neural networks (CNNs), namely ResNet-152 and VGG-19, in analyzing, on panoramic images, the rapport that exists between the lower third molar (MM3) and the mandibular canal (MC), and to compare this performance with that of an inexperienced observer (a sixth year dental student). Utilizing the k-fold cross-validation technique, 142 MM3 images, cropped from 83 panoramic images, were split into 80% as training and validation data and 20% as test data. They were subsequently labeled by an experienced radiologist as the gold standard. In order to compare the diagnostic capabilities of CNN algorithms and the inexperienced observer, the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) were determined. ResNet-152 achieved a mean sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and accuracy, of 84.09%, 94.11%, 92.11%, and 88.86%, respectively. VGG-19 achieved 71.82%, 93.33%, 92.26%, and 85.28% regarding the aforementioned characteristics. The dental student’s diagnostic performance was respectively 69.60%, 53.00%, 64.85%, and 62.53%. This work demonstrated the potential use of deep CNN architecture for the identification and evaluation of the contact between MM3 and MC in panoramic pictures. In addition, CNNs could be a useful tool to assist inexperienced observers in more accurately identifying contact relationships between MM3 and MC on panoramic images.

Background: Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) did not show a benefit of direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) treatment compared with antiplatelet therapy for the prevention of recurrent strokes in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). However, the balance between efficacy and safety in subgroups needs to be better defined. We aimed to assess the relative benefits of DOACs in key subgroups of adult patients with ESUS. Methods: We searched major databases (PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, and Web of Science) for RCTs published from inception to 16 June 2024. The primary outcome was recurrent stroke, and the main safety outcomes were major bleeding and clinically relevant non-major bleeding (CRNB). We assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2. Results: We identified four RCTs, involving a total of 13,970 patients with ESUS. Compared to antiplatelet therapy, treatment with DOAC did not reduce the risk of recurrent stroke (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.83–1.08, p = 0.45) or ischemic stroke (RR 0.92, 95% CI 0.80–1.05, p = 0.22) or increase major bleeding (RR 1.57, 95% CI 0.87–2.83; p = 0.14). DOAC treatment was associated with a significantly higher risk of CRNMB compared to aspirin (RR 1.52, 95% CI: 1.22–1.90; p = 0.0002). The subgroup analysis demonstrated that use of DOACs was associated with a significant protective effect in patients aged 75 or older (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.60–0.97, p = 0.03) and when the time from index stroke to randomization was ≥8 days (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.66–0.97, p = 0.02) in preventing recurrency of any type of stroke. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis showed lack of overall benefit of anticoagulation with DOAC compared to antiplatelet therapy for recurrent stroke prevention in adult patients with ESUS. However, the subgroup analyses suggest the possibility of interactions between age and timing of randomization since stroke and treatment with an DOAC in terms of recurrent stroke prevention. Introduction: Penile metastases (PMs) are a rare clinical presentation mainly related to advanced stages of disease. Considering the low incidence, an optimal treatment approach has not yet been defined; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy (RT) are different options used in the vast majority with palliative intent. The advances in modern RT can represent an innovative tool in PM management and a curative option. This paper aimed to report the case of a PM patient treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and perform a systematic literature review of current evidence on the RT approach to PM. Case Presentation: We reported the case of an 80-year-old patient with PM from primary bladder cancer. Following the surgical approach for the primary tumor, evidence of PM was shown, and the patient was admitted to SBRT treatment on PM after an adjuvant RT course on the pelvis. A 25 Gy in 5-fraction SBRT treatment was performed, and a complete clinical response was shown at the first follow-up. A PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase systematic review was carried out. The search strategy terms were [("penile metastasis"/exp OR "penile metastasis" OR (penile AND ("metastasis"/exp OR metastasis))) AND ("radiotherapy"/exp OR radiotherapy)] and only original articles up to October 24, 2023 were considered. Conclusion: A total of 174 studies were obtained using the previously mentioned search strategy, and the analysis was performed on 15 papers obtained following the complete selection process. All reported evidence was focused on the palliative approach of PM, showing good results in terms of symptom control. The potential role of modern RT in the management of PM has yet to be defined. The impact of diabetic foot (DF) on the healthcare system represents a major public health problem, leading to a considerable clinical and economic burden. The factors contributing to DF's development and progression are strongly interconnected, including metabolic causes, neuropathy, arteriopathy, and inflammatory changes. Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-i), novel oral hypoglycemic drugs used as an adjunct to standard treatment, have recently changed the pharmacological management of diabetes. Nevertheless, data about the risk of limb amputation, discordant and limited to canagliflozin, which is currently avoided in the case of peripheral artery disease, have potentially discouraged the design of specific studies targeting DF. There is good evidence for the single immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and beneficial vascular effects of SGLT2-i. Still, there is no clinical evidence about the early use of SGLT2-i in diabetic foot due to the lack of longitudinal and prospective studies proving the effect of these drugs without confounders. This narrative review aims to discuss the main evidence about the impact of SGLT2-i on the three complications of diabetes implicated in the development of DF, the state of the art, and the potential future implications. Background/Objectives: The interpretation of evidence on the de-escalation of triple therapy with the withdrawal of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) to dual bronchodilator therapy with a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) and a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is conflicting. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of ICS discontinuation from LABA-LAMA-ICS triple therapy compared to its continuation. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web Of Science, clinicaltrial.gov, and CENTRAL for RCTs and observational studies from inception to 22 March 2024, investigating the effect of triple therapy de-escalation with the withdrawal of ICSs to dual therapy on the risk of COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, and lung function. This study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42024527942. Results: A total of 3335 studies was screened; 3 RCTs and 3 real-world non-interventional studies were identified as eligible. The analysis of the time to the first moderate or severe exacerbation showed a pooled HR of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.80–1.15; I2 = 77%) for ICS withdrawal compared to triple therapy continuation. The analysis according eosinophil levels showed that COPD subjects with ≥300 eosinophils/µL had a significant increase in the incidence of moderate or severe exacerbations when de-escalated to LABA/LAMA (pooled HR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.00–1.82; I2: 56%). ICS withdrawal did not significantly affect the risk of mortality and pneumonia. Conclusions: The de-escalation of triple therapy with ICS withdrawal does not affect the main outcomes evaluated (moderate or severe exacerbations, change in trough FEV1). The excessive use of pesticides has detrimental effects on the ecosystem, leading to soil contamination and the spread of pollution beyond the targeted areas. Concerns arise regarding the permissible limits of pesticides, typically around 10−8 mol/L. In this study, we employed surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), a highly sensitive and selective technique, to investigate the behavior of the pesticide ametrine (AMT) on silver colloids. The Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibited an average size of (26 ± 2) nm and a zeta potential of (−30 ± 1) mV in the absence of AMT, which decreased to (−24 ± 1) mV in the presence of AMT, resulting in mild AgNPs aggregation, with the average diameter of AgNPs increasing to approximately 300 nm. This aggregation is advantageous, as they provide active sites for pesticide detection. Besides, the purification method employed ensured that AMT remained undegraded, and various conformations of AMT were simulated using Ag clusters to study the SERS effect. Comparison with the experimental spectra indicated that the SERS‐4 conformer closely resembled the experimental spectrum, suggesting simultaneous interaction between the Ag surface and the sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) atoms of the AMT triazine ring. Notably, changes in the AMT molecule were observed with pH variations: at pH below 5, hydroxylation occurred, resulting in an Ag–Cl stretching at 241 cm−1 in the SERS spectra. Conversely, at pH above 5 (pH 6–13), the presence of bands at 230 and 219 cm−1 in the SERS spectra indicate the formation of Ag–N and Ag–S bonds, respectively, between the AMT and the AgNPs. Furthermore, the study successfully detected AMT at pH 7, establishing a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.36 × 10−8 mol/L (3 ppb) based on the SERS spectra. These findings underscore the applicability of the SERS technique in the sensitive and selective detection of AMT, offering a promising approach for monitoring the presence of this pesticide in environmental samples. Gastric cancer (GC) is the second most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide and a serious public health concern. This high death rate is mostly caused by late-stage diagnoses, which lead to poor treatment outcomes. Radiation immunotherapy and targeted therapies are becoming increasingly popular in GC treatment, in addition to surgery and systemic chemotherapy. In this review, we have focused on both in vitro and in vivo research, which presents a summary of recent developments in targeted therapies for gastric cancer. We explore targeted therapy approaches, including integrin receptors, HER2, Claudin 18, and glutathione-responsive systems. For instance, therapies targeting the integrin receptors such as the αvβ3 and αvβ5 integrins have shown promise in enhancing diagnostic precision and treatment efficacy. Furthermore, nanotechnology provides novel approaches to targeted drug delivery and imaging. These include glutathione-responsive nanoplatforms and cyclic RGD peptide-conjugated nanoparticles. These novel strategies seek to reduce systemic toxicity while increasing specificity and efficacy. To sum up, the review addresses the significance of personalized medicine and advancements in gastric cancer-targeted therapies. Cotton, with a cultivated area of 31.92 × 106 ha−1 across 80 countries and an estimated annual turnover of USD 5.68 billion, is the world's leading natural textile fiber. However, many cotton-producing countries have neglected to improve production practices, adversely affecting the environment and society. A systematic review of the sustainable cotton cultivation literature was performed for the first time to identify and suggest context-specific agricultural strategies that can be applied within different agroecosystems. The key aspects include (1) inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal species such as Gigaspora margarita, Funneliformis mosseae, and Acaulospora scrobiculata to enhance root exploration, biomass, and nutrient uptake; (2) using grass, legume, and brassica cover crops as a valid alternative to monoculture and fallow crop rotations to reduce resource depletion and increase the sustainability of cotton production; (3) adopting drip and mulched drip irrigation systems over traditional furrow and sprinkler systems for water conservation; (4) exploring the feasibility of prematurely terminating irrigation in humid subtropical and Mediterranean climates as an alternative to chemical defoliation without affecting cotton yield. This paper, which describes various farming practices adopted in different climates, provides farmers a guide for eco-friendly cotton agronomic management without sacrificing productivity. ImportanceThere is growing awareness of sex-related differences in cardiovascular risk profiles, but less is known about whether these extend to pre-menopausal females experiencing an early-onset myocardial infarction (MI), who may benefit from the protective effects of estrogen exposure.MethodsA nationwide study involving 125 Italian Coronary Care Units recruited 2,000 patients between 1998 and 2002 hospitalized for a type I myocardial infarction before the age of 45 years (male, n = 1,778 (88.9%). Patients were followed up for a median of 19.9 years (IQR 18.1–22.6). The primary composite endpoint was the occurrence of cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial re-infarction or non-fatal stroke, and the secondary endpoint of hospitalization for revascularisation by means of a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).ResultsST-elevation MI was the most frequent presentation among both men and women (85.1 vs. 87.4%, p = ns), but the men had a greater baseline coronary atherosclerotic burden (median Duke Coronary Artery Disease Index: 48 vs. 23; median Syntax score 9 vs. 7; both p < 0.001). The primary composite endpoint occurred less frequently among women (25.7% vs. 37.0%; adjusted hazard ratio: 0.69, 95% CI 0.52–0.91; p = 0.01) despite being less likely to receive treatment with most secondary prevention medications during follow up.ConclusionsThere are significant sex-related differences in baseline risk factors and outcomes among patients with early-onset MI: women present with a lower atherosclerotic disease burden and, although they are less frequently prescribed secondary prevention measures, experience better long-term outcomes.Trial Registration4272/98 Ospedale Niguarda, Ca' Granda 03/09/1998.

Abstract Background Recent cardiovascular outcome trials have shown significant reductions in major cardiovascular (CV) events with glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 receptor agonists. Additionally, adjunctive surrogates for cardiovascular risk validated by some studies include arterial stiffness and endothelial function indexes. To date, no randomized trial has addressed the possible effects of antidiabetic interventional drugs such as GLP1 agonists on endothelial and arterial stiffness indexes as surrogate markers of vascular damage. Aims We aimed to evaluate metabolic efficacy and surrogate vascular efficacy endpoints of once-weekly dulaglutide (1.5 mg) plus traditional antidiabetic treatment compared with traditional antidiabetic treatment alone in subjects with type 2 diabetes. Methods Men and women (aged ≥ 50 years) with established or newly detected type 2 diabetes whose HbA1c level was 9.5% or less on stable doses of up to two oral glucose­ lowering drugs with or without basal insulin therapy were eligible for randomization. Subcutaneous dulaglutide was initiated at the full dose (1.5 mg/day weekly). Arterial stiffness (PWV: pulse wave velocity and augmentation index) and endothelial function (RHI: reactive hyperaemia index) were evaluated at baseline and at three-month and nine-month examination visits. At each visit (at 3 and 9 months), the subjects were also evaluated for glycaemic variables such as fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c and lipid variables such as total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Results At the three-month follow-up, the subjects treated with dulaglutide showed significantly lower serum levels of FPG and HbA1c than control subjects treated with conventional therapy. At the 9-month follow-up, subjects treated with dulaglutide showed significant lower values of the mean diastolic blood pressure, BMI, total serum cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, FPG, HbA1c and PWV and higher mean RHI values than control subjects treated with conventional therapy. Conclusions Our randomized trial showed that subjects with type 2 diabetes treated with conventional therapy plus 1.5 mg/day of subcutaneous dulaglutide compared with subjects treated with conventional therapy alone showed favourable metabolic effects associated with positive effects on vascular health markers such as arterial stiffness and endothelial function markers. These findings are consistent with previous study findings indicating the strict relationship between cardiovascular risk factors such as systolic blood pressure, total serum cholesterol and LDL levels and cardiovascular events and vascular health surrogate markers.

Ischemic stroke occurs under a variety of clinical conditions and has different pathogeneses, resulting in necrosis of brain parenchyma. Stroke pathogenesis is characterized by neuroinflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Some of the main processes triggered in the early stages of ischemic damage are the rapid activation of resident inflammatory cells (microglia, astrocytes and endothelial cells), inflammatory cytokines, and translocation of intercellular nuclear factors. Inflammation in stroke includes all the processes mentioned above, and it consists of either protective or detrimental effects concerning the “polarization” of these processes. This polarization comes out from the interaction of all the molecular pathways that regulate genome expression: the epigenetic factors. In recent years, new regulation mechanisms have been cleared, and these include non-coding RNAs, adenosine receptors, and the activity of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells and microglia. We reviewed how long non-coding RNA and microRNA have emerged as an essential mediator of some neurological diseases. We also clarified that their roles in cerebral ischemic injury may provide novel targets for the treatment of ischemic stroke. To date, we do not have adequate tools to control pathophysiological processes associated with stroke. Our goal is to review the role of non-coding RNAs and innate immune cells (such as microglia and mesenchymal stem/stromal cells) and the possible therapeutic effects of their modulation in patients with acute ischemic stroke. A better understanding of the mechanisms that influence the “polarization” of the inflammatory response after the acute event seems to be the way to change the natural history of the disease.

Abstract Background Heart rate variability (HRV) decreases in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and it can be considered a marker for cardiovascular dysautonomia. The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate long-term time-domain analysis of HRV of PD patients and compare the results with those of matched healthy individuals. Methods Idiopathic PD patients without comorbidity impairing HRV, and age-matched healthy individuals were recruited in a pilot study. A long-term time domain analysis of HRV using 24-h ambulatory ECG was performed. Results Overall, 18 PD patients fulfilling inclusion criteria completed the evaluation (mean age was 55.6 ± 8.8, disease duration: 5.0 ± 4.7). Mean SCOPA-AUT score was 10.1 ± 7.3. Patients were on Hoehn & Yahr stage 1–2 and mean Levodopa Equivalent Dose (LED) was 311 ± 239.9. Mean of the 5-min standard deviation (SD) of R-R intervals distribution (SDNN) for all 5 min segments of the entire recording (ISDNN) was significantly lower in patients compared to controls. ISDNN was significantly different between Parkinson’s disease patients and healthy controls. Conclusions In our population characterized by mild to moderate disease severity, time-domain assessment of HRV seemed to be a potential tool to characterize cardiovascular dysautonomia. Decrease of ISDNN in PD may reflect an autonomic derangement extending all day and night long.

The correct recognition of the etiology of ischemic stroke (IS) allows tempestive interventions in therapy with the aim of treating the cause and preventing a new cerebral ischemic event. Nevertheless, the identification of the cause is often challenging and is based on clinical features and data obtained by imaging techniques and other diagnostic exams. TOAST classification system describes the different etiologies of ischemic stroke and includes five subtypes: LAAS (large-artery atherosclerosis), CEI (cardio embolism), SVD (small vessel disease), ODE (stroke of other determined etiology), and UDE (stroke of undetermined etiology). AI models, providing computational methodologies for quantitative and objective evaluations, seem to increase the sensitivity of main IS causes, such as tomographic diagnosis of carotid stenosis, electrocardiographic recognition of atrial fibrillation, and identification of small vessel disease in magnetic resonance images. The aim of this review is to provide overall knowledge about the most effective AI models used in the differential diagnosis of ischemic stroke etiology according to the TOAST classification. According to our results, AI has proven to be a useful tool for identifying predictive factors capable of subtyping acute stroke patients in large heterogeneous populations and, in particular, clarifying the etiology of UDE IS especially detecting cardioembolic sources.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a promising oilseed crop for cultivation in central Southern Italy due to its high tolerance to drought and salinity stress and appreciable seed and oil yields. The genetic diversity of cultivars and climate factors can affect fatty acid composition and yield traits. This study aimed to assess the effects of genotype and climate conditions on the productive performance of eight high oleic safflower genotypes under rainfed conditions in Sicily (Italy). These genotypes were compared to the Montola 2000 cultivar, which was used as a reference. Tests were carried out during the growing seasons of 2014–2015 and 2015–2016. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Morphological and yield components were significantly affected by genotype while the year had a significant effect on plant height only. In general, CTI 17 produced the highest seed yield (1.40 t ha−1) and oil yield (0.58 t ha−1). The seed oil content was found on 40.2% of dry matter, on average. The “genotype” factor significantly affected oil content and fatty acid composition. Oleic acid content was on average 66.1% and did not vary greatly over the two growing seasons. The above- and belowground plant parts showed the highest carbon content and the lowest nitrogen content as a percentage of dry matter. The results indicate that, under rainfed conditions, yield parameters of high oleic safflower genotypes can be profitable in southern Italy though significantly dependent upon genotype.

Identifying atherosclerotic disease is the mainstay for the correct diagnosis of the large artery atherosclerosis ischemic stroke subtype and for choosing the right therapeutic strategy in acute ischemic stroke. Classification into symptomatic and asymptomatic plaque and estimation of the cardiovascular risk are essential to select patients eligible for pharmacological and/or surgical therapy in order to prevent future cerebral ischemic events. The difficulties in a “vulnerability” definition and the methodical issues concerning its detectability and quantification are still subjects of debate. Non-invasive imaging studies commonly used to detect arterial plaque are computed tomographic angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. Characterization of a carotid plaque type using the abovementioned imaging modalities represents the basis for carotid atherosclerosis management. Classification into symptomatic and asymptomatic plaque and estimation of the cardiovascular risk are essential to select patients eligible for pharmacological and/or surgical therapy in order to prevent future cerebral ischemic events. In this setting, artificial intelligence (AI) can offer suggestive solutions for tissue characterization and classification concerning carotid artery plaque imaging by analyzing complex data and using automated algorithms to obtain a final output. The aim of this review is to provide overall knowledge about the role of AI models applied to non-invasive imaging studies for the detection of symptomatic and vulnerable carotid plaques.

Radionuclides are unstable isotopes that mainly emit alpha (α), beta (β) or gamma (γ) radiation through radiation decay. Therefore, they are used in the biomedical field to label biomolecules or drugs for diagnostic imaging applications, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and/or single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). A growing field of research is the development of new radiopharmaceuticals for use in cancer treatments. Preclinical studies are the gold standard for translational research. Specifically, in vitro radiopharmaceutical studies are based on the use of radiopharmaceuticals directly on cells. To date, radiometric β- and γ-counters are the only tools able to assess a preclinical in vitro assay with the aim of estimating uptake, retention, and release parameters, including time- and dose-dependent cytotoxicity and kinetic parameters. This review has been designed for researchers, such as biologists and biotechnologists, who would like to approach the radiobiology field and conduct in vitro assays for cellular radioactivity evaluations using radiometric counters. To demonstrate the importance of in vitro radiopharmaceutical assays using radiometric counters with a view to radiogenomics, many studies based on 64Cu-, 68Ga-, 125I-, and 99mTc-labeled radiopharmaceuticals have been revised and summarized in this manuscript.

Green roof systems, aimed at reducing anthropic impact on the environment, are considered environmental mitigation technologies and adopted by many countries across the world to strengthen urban ecosystem services. This study evaluates two mixtures of succulent: one of Crassulaceae and the other of Aizoaceae, used in the creation of a continuous and homogenous plant groundcover in Mediterranean environments. To assess the species mixtures, the parameters plant height, growth index, cover percentage and flowering were observed. Hydrological observations were also carried out to evaluate the rainfall retained by the test system in any given month. All data were subjected to analysis of variance. Growth indicators in the study showed trends characteristic of xeric plants, which tend to slow down in dry, summer climate conditions to the point of halting plant vertical growth and ground cover development completely. The Aizocaeae mix, during the initial stage, showed prevalent horizontal growth, confirmed by greater a greater growth index (13,21) and cover percentage (45%) compared to Sedum (Growth index: 3,61; Cover: 36%). In contrast, the Sedum mix recorded greater vertical growth at the beginning (Sedum mixture: 7.53 cm; Aizoaceae mixture: 6,11 cm). During the final stages of observations, however, greater vertical growth in the Aizoaceae (7,88 cm) became apparent together with a recovery in horizontal growth in the Sedum (79%), albeit not sufficient to outperform the Aizoaceae mixture (87%). Flowering in the two mixtures occurred between late spring and late summer. The Sedum mixture guaranteed a longer flowering period (130 days) compared to the Aizoaceae (93 days), with a gradual start followed by steady flower emission. Regarding rainfall water retention, a comparison of the mixtures in late winter/early spring revealed that the Sedum performed best (44.9 L m2vs 37.4 L m2), whilst the Aizoaceae outperformed the Sedum in Autumn (63 L m2vs 55 L m2), in conjunction with favorable growth rates in both species mixtures. Both mixtures demonstrated satisfying results and are considered suited to a Mediterranean environment. Furthermore, based on the different growth rates of the species in the two test mixtures, this study suggests that new combinations of Sedum and Aizoaceae together might prove more resilient in Mediterranean environments.

In recent years, climate change has greatly affected rainfall and air temperature levels leading to a reduction in water resources in Southern Europe. This fact has emphasized the need to focus on the use of non-conventional water resources for agricultural irrigation. The reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) can represent a sustainable solution, reducing the consumption of freshwater (FW) and the need for mineral fertilisers. The main aim of this study was to assess, in a three-year period, the effects of TWW irrigation compared to FW on the biomass production of bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] plants and soil characteristics and to estimate the nutritional input provided by TWW irrigation. TWW was obtained by a constructed wetland system (CWs) which was used to treat urban wastewater. The system had a total surface area of 100 m2. An experimental field of bermudagrass was set up close to the system in a Sicilian location (Italy), using a split-plot design for a two-factor experiment with three replications. Results highlighted a high organic pollutant removal [five days biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5): 61%, chemical oxygen demand (COD): 65%] and a good efficiency in nutrients [total nitrogen (TN): 50%, total phosphorus (TP): 42%] of the CWs. Plants irrigated with TWW showed higher dry aboveground dry-weight (1259.3 kg ha-1) than those irrigated with FW (942.2 kg ha-1), on average. TWW irrigation approximately allowed a saving of 50.0 kg TN ha-1 year-1, 24.0 kg TP ha-1 year-1 and 29.0 kg K ha-1 year-1 on average with respect to commonly used N-P-K fertilisation programme for bermudagrass in the Mediterranean region. Soil salinity increased significantly (p ≤ 0.01) over the years and was detected to be higher in TWW-irrigated plots (+6.34%) in comparison with FW-irrigated plots. Our findings demonstrate that medium-term TWW irrigation increases the biomass production of bermudagrass turf and contributes to save significant amounts of nutrients, providing a series of agronomic and environmental benefits.

Oregano, Origanum vulgare L., is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Oregano shows variations in biomass yield and essential oil (EO) content due to the influence of abiotic and biotic factors. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different foliar applications based on calcium (Ca) and nitrogen (N) on morphological and productive parameters in oregano. Tests were carried out in Sicily (Italy) in 2020–2021. In each year, eight foliar applications were applied. Only flowers and leaves were used for the extraction of the EO. For all parameters in the study, except for plant height and inflorescence length, the highest values were found in treated plants with respect to the control. In plants treated with calcium and nitrogen, an increase of between 0.6 and 1.6 t ha−1 was observed for fresh yield, and an increase of between 0.5 and 0.9 t ha−1 was observed for dry yield. The increase in biomass yield led to an increase in EO yield of between 4 and 12 kg ha−1. The results highlight that foliar treatments with Ca in combination with N enable growth in crop production in environments that show poor water availability.

Polyphenols have gained widespread attention as they are effective in the prevention and management of various diseases, including cancer diseases (CD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). They are natural organic substances present in fruits, vegetables, and spices. Polyphenols interact with various kinds of receptors and membranes. They modulate different signal cascades and interact with the enzymes responsible for CD and RA. These interactions involve cellular machinery, from cell membranes to major nuclear components, and provide information on their beneficial effects on health. These actions provide evidence for their pharmaceutical exploitation in the treatment of CD and RA. In this review, we discuss different pathways, modulated by polyphenols, which are involved in CD and RA. A search of the most recent relevant publications was carried out with the following criteria: publication date, 2012–2022; language, English; study design, in vitro; and the investigation of polyphenols present in extra virgin olive, grapes, and spices in the context of RA and CD, including, when available, the underlying molecular mechanisms. This review is valuable for clarifying the mechanisms of polyphenols targeting the pathways of senescence and leading to the development of CD and RA treatments. Herein, we focus on research reports that emphasize antioxidant properties.
