Ammonium (NH4+) inhibits the microbial oxidation of methane (CH4), and gives rise to the formation of nitrous oxide (N2O) in aerobic soils. However, the NH4+ concentration in the soil water is not necessarily proportional to the total NH4+ concentration inthe soil, due to cation exchange or fixation phenomena. It was foundthat introducing the concept of ion exchange or fixation in kinetic models on CH4 consumption and N2O formation canincrease our knowledge on these processes in soils. A fit of these kinetic models with experimental data showed a standard deviation of slightly more than 10%. The effects of NH4+ on CH4 oxidation and N2O formation can only be compared in soils with the same cation exchange capacity (CEC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of straw and vinasses on the N mineralization–immobilization turnover of celery residues was investigated in a field experiment in Flanders (Belgium). The field was laid out in raised beds on a loamy sand soil. At the start of the experiment, 15N-labelled celery residues (4t dry matter (DM)ha−1) were mixed with straw (12tDMha−1) in order to immobilize the released celery-N followed by an incorporation of vinasses (4tDMha−1) after 200 days aiming to remineralize the immobilized N. Total N, mineral N and their 15N enrichments as well as microbial biomass N were determined at regular time intervals. During the first 62 days after the incorporation, straw immobilized the celery derived 15N in the microbial biomass and reduced the total celery-15N losses from the top 25cm by 38%. However, after 62 days, the N immobilization ceased due to low temperatures (<10°C) in the raised beds, and was followed by natural remineralization of immobilized celery-15N (without addition of vinasses) at a moment when the risk of nitrate leaching was still high. Hence, straw was not able to reduce the celery-N losses during the complete winter period. The addition of vinasses in spring caused no real positive priming effect, although it did increase the amount of remineralized celery-15N (7.6% of celery derived 15N) compared to the straw treatment without vinasses (1.7% of celery derived 15N) probably due to an apparent added nitrogen interaction caused by displacement reactions with the soil microbial biomass. In conclusion, in raised beds, it is not possible to reduce nitrate leaching and to achieve a synchronization between the N release from crop residues and N demand by the following crop by using straw and vinasses to manipulate the N release from crop residues. Abstract: Twenty-two long-term measurements of direct N2O emissions from soils in an intensive agricultural area were used for the validation of the process-based DNDC model (version 8.3P). Model simulations were evaluated for temporal patterns of N2O, NH4 +, NO3 − and water-filled pore space (WFPS) and total N2O emissions. Several soil and crop input parameter adjustments to the model were evaluated but only the recalculation of the WFPS at wilting point and at field capacity, using pedotransfer functions, resulted in a clear improvement of the simulated variables (WFPS in all cases, N2O in some cases). Therefore, only this adjustment was made to DNDC 8.3P. This change, however, resulted for some cases (both cropland and grassland) in retardation of nitrate leaching and to a lesser extent of NH4 + to the deeper soil layers. The goodness of fit of the simulated temporal pattern of N2O varied considerably between sites. The total simulated N2O emissions from cropland showed a good agreement with the measurements, although there was a systematic overestimation of 7.4kgN2O-Nha−1. Grassland soils, in contrast, gave a low agreement between total simulated and measured N2O losses. On the basis of all measured data a regional emission factor of 3.16 with a 95% confidence interval of −0.89 to 7.21 could be calculated. DNDC simulations resulted in an emission factor of 6.49 with a 95% confidence interval of 4.04–8.93. The overall outcome of the N2O emission measurements and DNDC simulations were compared with several empirical regression models, which may be applicable for a temperate climate system. All of the tested regression models showed reliable results up to a N2O emission of 10kgN2O-Nha−1. Higher emissions, however, were systematically underestimated. Though DNDC both under- and overestimated specific sites, the general agreement, over the whole range between measurements and simulations of total N2O losses (simulations=0.82×meas.+6.2), was better than for the different regression models. High autotrophic nitrogen removal rates of 858 mg N L−1 day−1 or 1.55g N m−2 day−1 were obtained in a lab-scale rotating biological contactor treating an ammonium rich influent. It was postulated that ammonium was removed as dinitrogen gas by a sequence of aerobic ammonium oxidation to nitrite taking place in the outer biofilm layer and anaerobic ammonium oxidation with nitrite as electron acceptor occuring in the deeper biofilm layer. Chemical evidence for anaerobic ammonium oxidation within intact biofilm sludge from a lab-scale rotating biological contactor could be provided, without direct identification of responsible organisms catalysing this reaction. 15N tracer techniques were used for identification and quantification of nitrogen transformations. In batch tests with biofilm sludge at dissolved oxygen concentrations lower than 0.1 mg L−1, ammonium and nitrite did react in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1.43 thereby forming dinitrogen. 15N isotope dilution calculations revealed that anaerobic ammonium oxidation was the major nitrogen transformation leading to concomitant ammonium and nitrite removal. Isotopic analysis of the produced biogas showed that both ammonium-N and nitrite-N were incorporated in N2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Old-growth forests of southern Chile represent an important reserve of temperate (rain) forests in the world. Wetter and colder forest ecosystems appear to be more efficient in conserving and recycling N such that mostly non-plant available N species are lost, which could be indicated by more depleted delta15N values of the soil and plants. Hydrological N loss from the old-growth forests in southern Chile occurs mainly via dissolved organic nitrogen and not via dissolved inorganic N. Forest disturbances (e.g. fire, clear-cutting or enhanced N deposition) cause (abrupt) changes in ecosystem N-cycling processes. In this study, we hypothesized that delta15N signatures of soil profiles under old-growth forests could be used as an integrator for ecosystem N-cycling, and changes of these delta15N profiles could be valuable to assess ecosystem resilience towards disturbances. Six old-growth forests were selected in the phytogeographical region of the Valdivian rain forest in southern Chile. One of the sites has been partly burned in February 2002. First, we observed that ecosystems with higher mean annual precipitation and lower mean annual temperature were relatively more depleted in 15N. Secondly, we found that a forest fire caused a 100-fold increase of the nitrate export and induced an enrichment of the soil delta15N signal in the upper 20 cm.

Combination of a partial nitritation process and an anaerobic ammonium oxidation process for the treatment of sludge reject water has some general cost-efficient advantages compared to nitrification-denitrification. The integrated process features two-stage autotrophic conversion of ammonium via nitrite to dinitrogen gas with lower demand for oxygen and no external carbon requirement. A nitrifying membrane-assisted bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of sludge reject water was operated under continuous aeration at low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations with the purpose of generating nitrite accumulation. Microfiltration was applied to allow a high sludge retention time (SRT), resulting in a stable partial nitritation process. During start-up of the MBR, oxygen-limited conditions were induced by increasing the ammonium loading rate and decreasing the oxygen transfer. At a loading rate of 0.9 kg N m(-3) d(-1) and an oxygen concentration below 0.1 mg DO L(-1), conversion to nitrite was close to 50% of the incoming ammonium, thereby yielding an optimal effluent within the stoichiometric requirements for subsequent anaerobic ammonium oxidation. A mathematical model for ammonium oxidation to nitrite and nitrite oxidation to nitrate was developed to describe the oxygen-limited partial nitritation process within the MBR. The model was calibrated with in situ determinations of kinetic parameters for microbial growth, reflecting the intrinsic characteristics of the ammonium oxidizing growth system at limited oxygen availability and high sludge age. The oxygen transfer coefficient (K(L)a) and the ammonium-loading rate were shown to be the appropriate operational variables to describe the experimental data accurately. The validated model was used for further steady state simulation under different operational conditions of hydraulic retention time (HRT), K(L)a, temperature and SRT, with the intention to support optimized process design. The main objective of this research was to investigate to what extent the potential C dynamics of soil organic matter (SOM) are related to the degree of 13C enrichment with increasing depth in soil profiles under permanent grassland. The evolution of the C content and the 13C natural abundance (delta13C value) of SOM were investigated in three soil profiles (0-40 cm depth) under permanent grassland of varying texture (a loamy sand, a loam and a clay loam soil). The delta13C value of the SOM showed a gradual increase with increasing depth and decreasing C content in the profiles, ranging from 1.9 per thousand (loamy sand soil), 2.9 per thousand (clay loam soil) and 4 per thousand (loam soil) in relation to the delta13C value of SOM at the surface. The relationship between the 13C enrichment and total organic C content at different depths in the profiles (down to 40 cm depth in the loam and clay loam soil, down to 25 cm depth in the loamy sand soil) could be well described by the Rayleigh equation. The enrichment factors epsilon, associated with the Rayleigh approximation of the data, ranged from -1.57 per thousand (clay loam soil) to -1.64 per thousand (loamy sand soil) and -1.91 per thousand (loam soil). The potential C dynamics in four depth intervals from the profiles (0-10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40 cm depth) were determined by means of an incubation experiment. The C decomposition rate constants from the four sampling depths in the profiles showed a significant, positive correlation (y = 0.21x + 0.018, R(2) = 0.66, p < 0.005) with the corresponding Deltadelta13C values (change of the delta13C value per depth increment). A better correlation was obtained when only the data from the upper 20 cm in the profiles (y = 0.21x + 0.019, R(2) = 0.78, p < 0.05) were considered. These results suggest that the Deltadelta13C values in the surface layers of profiles under permanent grassland may serve as an indicator of the potential degradability or the stability of the SOM (in terms of C decomposition rate constants)., (Copyright 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Variations in (13)C natural abundance and distribution of total C among five size and density fractions of soil organic matter, water soluble organic C (WSOC) and microbial biomass C (MBC) were investigated in the upper layer (0-20 cm) of a continuous grassland soil (CG, C(3) vegetation), a C(3)-humus soil converted to continuous maize cultivation (CM, C(4) vegetation) and a C(3)-humus soil converted to a rotation of maize cultivation and grassland (R). The amounts of WSOC and MBC were both significantly larger in the CG than in the CM and the R. In the three soils, WSOC was depleted while MBC was enriched in (13)C as compared with whole soil C. The relative contributions to the total C content of C stored in the macro-organic matter and in the size fraction 50-150 microm decreased with decreasing total C contents in the order CG > R > CM, while the relative contribution of C associated with the clay- and silt-sized fraction <50 microm increased. This reflects a greater stability and physical protection against microbial degradation associated with soil disruption (tillage) of the clay- and silt-associated organic C, in relation to the organic C in larger size fractions. The size and density fractions from the CG soil showed significant differences in (13)C enrichment, indicating different degrees of microbial degradation and stability of soil organic C associated with physically different soil organic matter (SOM) fractions. Delta(13)C analysis of the size and density fractions from CM and R soils reflected a decreasing turnover rate of soil organic C with increasing density among the macro-organic matter fractions and with decreasing particle size., (Copyright 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)
