112. The Authentic (And Angry) Audience

Abstract

Comments that accompany news teasers on social media are often uncivil, leading to undesired outcomes for news outlets. Why are readers susceptible to the effects of online comments? Are comments perceived as memorable or authentic more likely to influence readers? If so, do such outcomes occur across multiple types of news? An online experiment was conducted to test a 3 (comment valence: positive vs. negative vs. no comment control) × 4 (topic type: policy vs. international vs. health vs. sports) between-subjects design using a convenience sample recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 230). Results revealed that negative comments decreased news credibility and issue importance through the mediating pathway of decreased bandwagon support. The pattern of results was particularly strong among comments perceived as vivid and authentic, regardless of the type of news in question. Theoretical and practical implications of study findings are discussed.

Abstract

Online news outlets offers individuals with a variety of cues to public opinion such as quotes and comments, both of which have been shown to affect perceived public opinion. However, what happens when quotes embedded in news conflict with the sentiment of online comments? An experiment (N = 276) was conducted to investigate this question using a 3 (quote tone: issue supportive vs. issue opposition vs. no quote control) × 3 (comment tone: issue supportive vs. issue opposition vs. no comment control) design. Results revealed that counter-attitudinal online comments are less likely to decrease news credibility when accompanied by attitude consistent quotes. Perceptions of exemplar representativeness and similarity were also affected by exemplar congruity and prior issue attitudes. Abstract

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether a home-based 6-month lifestyle intervention program complemented by motivational interviewing could improve diet and physical activity behaviours in 50-69 year olds with or at risk of metabolic syndrome, residing in a disadvantaged rural Western Australian community. METHODS: Participants from the City of Albany and surrounding towns (n?=?401) were recruited into a 6 month randomised controlled trial. They were screened for metabolic syndrome and randomly allocated to intervention (n?=?201) or control group (n?=?200). Baseline and post-test data collection for both groups included a self-report questionnaire which incorporated the Fat and Fibre Barometer and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. The intervention group received the program materials at baseline and the control group was waitlisted. Generalised estimating equation models assessed repeated outcome measures over time. RESULTS: A total of 151 (75.1 %) intervention and 159 (79.5 %) control group participants completed post-test and were included in the analysis. Abstract

The presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Targeted interventions to reduce MetS for high risk populations are crucial for the prevention of these chronic diseases. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a 6-month home-based physical activity and diet intervention for rural adults with, or at risk of MetS. The randomised controlled trial was conducted in Albany and surrounding towns, Western Australia, 2014–2015. Participants were screened for MetS using the International Diabetes Federation criteria, and eligible participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 201) or control (n = 200) group. The intervention group received printed and online programme materials and motivational support, and the control group was waitlisted to receive the programme after post-test data collection. Anthropometry, lipid profiles, glycaemic status, and blood pressure were measured at baseline and 6-months post-test. In total, 312 (77.8%) participants completed post-test data collection and were included in the anthropometric analysis, and 274 (68.3%) participants were included in the blood sample analysis.After controlling for confounders, the intervention group significantly improved their triglyceride (− 0.10 mM, p = 0.002), total cholesterol (− 0.09 mM, p = 0.02), and non-HDL cholesterol (− 0.08 mM, p = 0.02) concentrations compared to the control group. Waist circumference (− 2.11 cm, p = 0.03), waist-to-hip ratio (− 0.01, p = 0.04), weight (− 0.70 kg, p = 0.01), and body mass index (− 0.20 kg/m2, p < 0.001) were also improved. These findings suggest that comprehensive home-based prevention programmes that include a combination of dietary and physical activity interventions are a promising means to prevent the onset of chronic disease in rural adults.

Abstract

Online comments hold the potential to promote positive deliberative outcomes, although past work has also shown that comments can have undesired effects when the sentiment of the crowd turns negative. Does the presence of comments possibly bolster or interfere with the reception and traditional functions of news media? Informed by the Modality-Agency-Interactivity-Navigability (MAIN) model, an online experiment tested the effect of reader comments (positive vs negative), number of "retweets" and "likes" (low vs high), and coverage frequency (infrequent vs frequent) on news credibility and issue importance. Negative reader comments (relative to positive comments) decreased message credibility and issue importance through the sequential indirect pathway of bandwagon perceptions, attention, and construct accessibility. Abstract

Previous research has found that users' interactions with others in online environments are often guided by the same rules and stereotypes we apply in our everyday lives. However, fewer studies have used virtual worlds as an experimental setting for the systematic examination of how avatar appearance and offline identity affect the outcome of users' actual interactions. This online field experiment measured the effect of avatar attractiveness, avatar gender, purported user gender, and favor size on the rate at which users received help across 2,300 separate user interactions. In addition, the main study's avatar gender, purported user gender, and favor size manipulations were replicated with a human avatar condition with 761 participants to examine whether trends for these factors' effects were similar with human avatars. In the main study, attractive avatars generally received more help than less attractive avatars. However, purported female users were helped less frequently than purported male users when represented by avatars that were either male or less attractive. Trends in the human avatar condition were similar to those observed in the main study. Implications for avatar-mediated communication and the persistence of sex roles in virtual environments are discussed. Master of Arts

Abstract

Do portrayals of robots in popular films influence older adults' robot anxiety and adoption intentions? Informed by cultivation theory, disposition theory and the technology acceptance model, the current survey (N = 379) examined how past exposure to robots in the media affect older adults' (Mage = 66) anxiety towards robots and their subsequent perceptions of robot usefulness, ease of use, and adoption intentions. The results of a structural equation model (SEM) analysis indicate that the higher the number of media portrayals recalled, the lower the anxiety towards robots. Furthermore, recalling robots with a human-like appearance or robots that elicit greater feelings of sympathy was related to more positive attitudes towards robots.
