- Abstract
The development and operation of liquid-argon time-projection chambers for neutrino physics has created a need for new approaches to pattern recognition in order to fully exploit the imaging capabilities offered by this technology. Whereas the human brain can excel at identifying features in the recorded events, it is a significant challenge to develop an automated, algorithmic solution. The Pandora Software Development Kit provides functionality to aid the design and implementation of pattern-recognition algorithms. It promotes the use of a multi-algorithm approach to pattern recognition, in which individual algorithms each address a specific task in a particular topology. Many tens of algorithms then carefully build up a picture of the event and, together, provide a robust automated pattern-recognition solution. This paper describes details of the chain of over one hundred Pandora algorithms and tools used to reconstruct cosmic-ray muon and neutrino events in the MicroBooNE detector. Metrics that assess the current pattern-recognition performance are presented for simulated MicroBooNE events, using a selection of final-state event topologies.

We present several studies of convolutional neural networks applied to data coming from the MicroBooNE detector, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). The algorithms studied include the classification of single particle images, the localization of single particle and neutrino interactions in an image, and the detection of a simulated neutrino event overlaid with cosmic ray backgrounds taken from real detector data. These studies demonstrate the potential of convolutional neural networks for particle identification or event detection on simulated neutrino interactions. We also address technical issues that arise when applying this technique to data from a large LArTPC at or near ground level.

This paper describes the design and construction of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber and associated systems. MicroBooNE is the first phase of the Short Baseline Neutrino program, located at Fermilab, and will utilize the capabilities of liquid argon detectors to examine a rich assortment of physics topics. 136 Xe is used as the target medium for many experiments searching for 0νββ. Despite underground operation, cosmic muons that reach the laboratory can produce spallation neutrons causing activation of detector materials. A potential background that is difficult to veto using muon tagging comes in the form of137 Xe created by the capture of neutrons on136 Xe. This isotope decays via beta decay with a half-life of 3.8 min and a Qβ of ∼4.16 MeV. This work proposes and explores the concept of adding a small percentage of3 He to xenon as a means to capture thermal neutrons and reduce the number of activations in the detector volume. When using this technique we find the contamination from137 Xe activation can be reduced to negligible levels in tonne and multi-tonne scale high pressure gas xenon neutrinoless double beta decay experiments running at any depth in an underground laboratory. A two-dimensional 128 x 128 detector array for the 1.0 - 1.7 micron spectral region has been demonstrated with indium gallium arsenide. The 30 micron square pixels had 60 micron spacing in both directions and were designed to be compatible with a 2D Reticon multiplexer. Dark currents below 100 pA, capacitance near 0.1 pF, and quantum efficiencies above 80 percent were measured. Probe maps of dark current and quantum efficiency are presented along with pixel dropout data and wafer yield which was as high as 99.89 percent (7 dropouts) in an area of 6528 pixels and 99.37 percent (103 dropouts) over an entire 128 x 128 pixel region.

- Abstract
We present several studies of convolutional neural networks applied to data coming from the MicroBooNE detector, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). The algorithms studied include the classification of single particle images, the localization of single particle and neutrino interactions in an image, and the detection of a simulated neutrino event overlaid with cosmic ray backgrounds taken from real detector data. These studies demonstrate the potential of convolutional neural networks for particle identification or event detection on simulated neutrino interactions. We also address technical issues that arise when applying this technique to data from a large LArTPC at or near ground level.

- Abstract
This paper describes the design and construction of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber and associated systems. MicroBooNE is the first phase of the Short Baseline Neutrino program, located at Fermilab, and will utilize the capabilities of liquid argon detectors to examine a rich assortment of physics topics. In this document details of design specifications, assembly procedures, and acceptance tests are reported.

Donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) is an established biomarker of rejection following HT. There is an unmet need to determine what factors influence dd-cfDNA in the context of HT. Herein we describe a retrospective analysis of dd-cfDNA test results used in clinical practice and variables including recipient age, sex, and time since transplant. All HT patients ≥18 yrs who underwent dd-cfDNA testing with the ProsperaTM Heart assay as part of clinical care in the US from 9/21-9/22 were assessed. Patients with ≥2 tests within 90 days who were <5 yrs post-HT were analyzed. 1243 commercial samples (73% male) from 281 HT pts (71% male) were analyzed for dd-cfDNA levels at our CLIA lab (Natera, San Carlos, CA). 25% of samples were found to be "high risk" (i.e. dd-cfDNA fraction ≥0.15%), including 23% and 30% of tests from male and female patients, respectively. There were no significant differences in the mean dd-cfDNA fraction between male and female recipients. The mean dd-cfDNA fraction among individuals aged 35-54 yrs was significantly elevated compared to older (p<0.001) and younger (p<0.05) recipients (Fig. 1A). There were no significant differences between mean dd-cfDNA fractions of male and female recipients of the same age group (Fig. 1B).Covariate analysis identified time since HT as a significant predictor of dd-cfDNA fraction (p<0.001; Fig. 1C). dd-cfDNA fraction increased significantly with time since HT (Fig. 1C). Conclusions: We found that recipient age and time since HT influenced dd-cfDNA fractions. Current clinical practice applies a standard dd-cfDNA fraction cutoff as an indicator of rejection. However, this study identified several factors that influence the calculated dd-cfDNA fraction. Adjusting the dd-cfDNA fraction cut-off for these factors, and others such as the absolute quantity of dd-cfDNA, could improve the accuracy of detecting AR in HT. This paper describes new alloy heterojunction detectors of In(.8)Ga(.2)As/InAs(.6)P(.4) which can detect light between 1.7 and 2.6 microns with 50 percent quantum efficiency and 5 mA/sq cm dark current (-1 V) density at room temperature. Wafer probe data showed that over 50 good contiguous 100 micron diameter devices (spaced 400 microns) could be made on a 25 x 30 mm wafer with overall yield above 93 percent. The ability to operate under -1 V reverse bias makes these devices ideally compatible with existing commercial multiplexer readouts.

Linear arrays of 256 element InGaAs detectors with 100 x 30 micron pixels were mounted in multiplexer packages and tested in an optical multichannel analyzer (OMA). Typical performance characteristics include dark current (-5V) of 400 picoamps and responsivities of 0.75 A/W (1.3 microns) and 0.14 A/W (0.85 microns). The 256 element exhibited a mean room-temperature dark current of under 400 picoamps when mounted in the OMA and a dynamic range over 11 bits (2000:1). Future applications, including room-temperature detector arrays for 2.5 microns and avalanche photodiode arrays for 1.0-1.7 microns, are discussed.

InGaAs photodetectors have been configured into linear arrays of 30 x 30 micron photodetectors spaced 50 microns apart. The devices have typical responsivities of 0.9 A/W (86-percent QE) at 1.3 microns and exhibit room temperature dark currents below 100 pA. A 256-element array has been mounted in a Reticon multiplexer and configured into a PAR optical multichannel analyzer to extend spectral response out to 1.7 microns. Individual InGaAs detectors have been fabricated for response out to 2.2 microns with dark current below 1 microA (-1V) and 50-percent QE at room temperature.
