Ever more stringent regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from transportation motivate efforts to revisit materials used for vehicles. High-strength Al-alloys often used in aircrafts could help reduce the weight of automobiles, but are susceptible to environmental degradation. Hydrogen (H) "embrittlement" is often pointed as the main culprit, however, the mechanisms underpinning failure are elusive: atomic-scale analysis of H inside an alloy remains a challenge, and this prevents deploying alloy design strategies to enhance the materials' durability. Here we successfully performed near-atomic scale analysis of H trapped in second-phase particles and at grain boundaries in a high-strength 7xxx Al-alloy. We used these observations to guide atomistic ab-initio calculations which show that the co-segregation of alloying elements and H favours grain boundary decohesion, while the strong partitioning of H into the second-phases removes solute H from the matrix, hence preventing H-embrittlement. Our insights further advance the mechanistic understanding of H-assisted embrittlement in Al-alloys, emphasizing the role of H-traps in retarding cracking and guiding new alloy design.

We present a deep-learning based computing framework for fast-and-accurate CT (DL-FACT) testing of COVID-19. Our CT-based DL framework was developed to improve the testing speed and accuracy of COVID-19 (plus its variants) via a DL-based approach for CT image enhancement and classification. The image enhancement network is adapted from DDnet, short for DenseNet and Deconvolution based network. To demonstrate its speed and accuracy, we evaluated DL-FACT across several sources of COVID-19 CT images. Our results show that DL-FACT can significantly shorten the turnaround time from days to minutes and improve the COVID-19 testing accuracy up to 91%. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a parallel-electromagnetically-induced transparency (parallel-EIT) cooling technique for ion crystals in the Paul trap. It has less stringent requirements on the cooling resonance condition than the standard electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) cooling, thus allowing, in principle, to simultaneously cool the motional mode spectrum with an arbitrary range. A proof-of-principle validation for this cooling scheme is experimentally demonstrated with up to 4 trapped 40Ca+ ions. We observe simultaneous near-ground-state cooling for all motional modes with best average phonon number about 0.2. By tuning the trap frequency in a large range to imitate a broadband motional mode spectrum, we can still reach almost the same cooling limit for all the modes while standard EIT cooling shows limited cooling range. Our method has a simple experimental configuration, requiring only appropriate modulation of the probe beam of standard EIT cooling, and can be applied to various types of ions (e.g., 171Yb+, 40Ca+). Symmetry, including the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetry, is a striking topic, widely discussed and employed in many fields. It is well-known that quantum measurement can destroy or disturb quantum systems. However, can and how does quantum measurement destroy the symmetry of the measured system? To answer the pertinent question, we establish the correlation between the quantum measurement and Floquet $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and investigate for the first time how the measurement frequency and measurement strength affect the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry of the measured system using the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ion. It is already shown that the measurement at high frequencies would break the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. Notably, even for an inadequately fast measurement frequency, if the measurement strength is sufficiently strong, the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking can occur. The current work can enhance our knowledge of quantum measurement and symmetry and may inspire further research on the effect of quantum measurement on symmetry.

Solid-state nuclear spins surrounding individual, optically addressable qubits provide a crucial resource for quantum networks, computation and simulation. While hosts with sparse nuclear spin baths are typically chosen to mitigate qubit decoherence, developing coherent quantum systems in nuclear spin-rich hosts enables exploration of a much broader range of materials for quantum information applications. The collective modes of these dense nuclear spin ensembles provide a natural basis for quantum storage, however, utilizing them as a resource for single spin qubits has thus far remained elusive. Here, by using a highly coherent, optically addressed 171Yb3+ qubit doped into a nuclear spin-rich yttrium orthovanadate crystal, we develop a robust quantum control protocol to manipulate the multi-level nuclear spin states of neighbouring 51V5+ lattice ions. Via a dynamically-engineered spin exchange interaction, we polarise this nuclear spin ensemble, generate collective spin excitations, and subsequently use them to implement a long-lived quantum memory. We additionally demonstrate preparation and measurement of maximally entangled 171Yb--51V Bell states. Unlike conventional, disordered nuclear spin based quantum memories, our platform is deterministic and reproducible, ensuring identical quantum registers for all 171Yb qubits. Our approach provides a framework for utilising the complex structure of dense nuclear spin baths, paving the way for building large-scale quantum networks using single rare-earth ion qubits.

Community detection is a well-studied problem with applications in domains ranging from networking to bioinformatics. Due to the rapid growth in the volume of real-world data, there is growing interest in accelerating contemporary community detection algorithms. However, the more accurate and statistically robust methods tend to be hard to parallelize. One such method is stochastic block partitioning (SBP) - a community detection algorithm that works well on graphs with complex and heterogeneous community structure. In this paper, we present a sampling-based SBP (SamBaS) for accelerating SBP on sparse graphs. We characterize how various graph parameters affect the speedup and result quality of community detection with SamBaS and quantify the trade-offs therein. To evaluate SamBas on real-world web graphs without known ground-truth communities, we introduce partition quality score (PQS), an evaluation metric that outperforms modularity in terms of correlation with F1 score. Overall, SamBaS achieves speedups of up to 10X while maintaining result quality (and even improving result quality by over 150% on certain graphs, relative to F1 score)., Comment: Updated to latest submitted version
