118. The multiple frequency delivery operations in the time-definite delivery industry

Abstract

The pure hub-and-spoke network is an efficient network structure for time-definite freight delivery common carders. Centres perform pickup and delivery functions, while hubs consolidate partial loads. This substantially reduces the transportation costs with only a small increase in the handling cost. In Taiwan, as well as in the US, carriers run their delivery operations once a day. As a result, the feeder fleet is under-utilized. This research studied the impact of multiple frequency delivery operations on the feeder fleet size. We formulated line-haul operations planning for multiple frequency delivery operations as an integer programme. We developed an [alpha]-optimal implicit enumeration algorithm and used two small networks from the third largest carrier in Taiwan for numerical testing. The results demonstrated a smaller feeder fleet size compared with the single frequency delivery operations. Keywords: road transport; networks and graphs; logistics; distribution

143. A Novel High Flow Rate Pin for Water-assisted Injection Molding of Plastic Parts with a More Uniform Residual Wall Thickness Distribution

Abstract

Three types of water pins are currently used in the water-assisted injection molding technologies to mold plastic parts, including orifice, ring and piercing type pins. Nevertheless, the former two types of pins have the disadvantages of a low flow rate and high pressure drop, while the drawbacks for the latter type are that timing the piercing pin into the cavity is a challenge and the cost of a mold is high. This report describes the development a novel high flow rate water pin for water-assisted injection molding of plastic parts. The pin, which consists of a sintered porous surface outlet, has been tested on parts with two different geometries: a plate with a channel across the center and a float-shaped tube part. The experimental results suggests that the proposed water injection pin can mold parts of a large size with a more uniform residual wall thickness distribution.

144. Fabrication, microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled ZW31/PMMCs laminate

Abstract

In present work, the ductile Mg–Zn–Y alloy (ZW31) was introduced into the 10 μm 15 vol% SiCp/AZ91 composites (PMMCs) to coordinate the deformation of PMMCs during the rolling process, then the ZW31/PMMCs laminate with the thickness of ~1 mm was prepared successfully. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled ZW31/PMMCs laminate before and after the annealing process was investigated, the results indicated that existence of ZW31 alloy layer can absorb energy and relieve stress concentration of PMMCs layer by the formation of twins, which not only break through the bottlenecks of poor toughness of PMMCs, but also make it possible for the rolling of PMMCs sheet. The recrystallization behavior of the ZW31 alloy layer and PMMCs layer was completely different during the subsequent annealing process. For the ZW31 alloy layer, recrystallization induced by twinning, while the recrystallization in PMMCs layer related to the introduced particle. The typical rolling texture was formed in the ZW31/PMMCs laminate, and the intensity of which was mainly controlled by the ZW31 alloy. Application of annealing process improved the elongation of the ZW31/PMMCs laminate, however, at the expense of strength. Cracks originate in different positions of PMMCS layer and then connect with each other along the direction which perpendicular to the stress. The existence of ZW31 alloy layer inhibits the propagation of crack and is propitious to improve the ductility of ZW31/PMMCs laminate.
