Abstract

Plasmonic nano-antennas have proven the outstanding ability of sensing chemical and physical processes down to the nano-meter scale. Sensing is usually achieved within the highly confined optical fields generated resonantly by the nano-antennas, i.e. in contact to the nano-structures. In these paper, We demonstrate the sensing capability of nano-antennas to their larger scale environment, well beyond their plasmonic confinement volume, leading to the concept of 'remote' (non contact) sensing on the nano-meter scale. On the basis of a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) integrated at the apex of a SNOM fiber tip, we introduce an ultra-compact, move-able and background-free optical nano-sensor for the remote sensing of a silicon surface (up to distance of 300 nm). Sensitivity of the BNA to its large scale environment is high enough to expect the monitoring and control of the spacing between the nano-antenna and a silicon surface with sub-nano-meter accuracy. This work paves the way towards a new class of nano-positionning technique, based on nano-antenna resonance monitoring, that are alternative to nano-mechanical and optical interference-based devices.

Abstract

Childhood experiences have an important effect on mobile phone addiction, but the relationship between positive childhood experiences and mobile phone addiction and its underlying mechanisms should be explored further. This study aims to explore a model linking early memories of warmth and safeness to mobile phone addiction via the mediating role of alexithymia and moderating role of negative coping styles. A total of 379 Chinese college students (M age = 19.80 years, SD = 1.38; 240 females) completed a questionnaire consisting of the Early Memories of Warmth and Safeness Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Mobile Phone Addiction Scale, and Negative Coping Styles Scale. Results indicate that early memories of warmth and safeness are negatively correlated with mobile phone addiction, and alexithymia plays a mediating role in the link between early memories of warmth and safeness and mobile phone addiction. In addition, negative coping styles significantly moderate the relationship between early memories of warmth and safeness and alexithymia, specifically, the negative association between early memories of warmth and safeness and alexithymia is highly significant at high (vs. low) negative coping styles levels. The findings suggest that early memories of warmth and safeness are an important protective factor against mobile phone addiction, which enrich the literature on mobile phone addiction and provide empirical support for the prevention of mobile phone addiction. 119. Numerical modelling of breaking waves under the influence of wind

Abstract

Wave breaking plays an important role in air-sea interaction, surf zone dynamics, nearshore sediment transport, marine hydrodynamics, and wave-structure interaction. When the wind is blowing over water waves, it not only enhances the exchanges of heat, mass and momentum on the air-water interface, but also affects the wave breaking process. The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of breaking waves under the influence of wind. A two-phase flow model is presented to solve the flow in the air and water simultaneously. Two strategies for turbulence modelling, namely, the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the k−ǫ turbulence model and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with the Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model, are employed to study two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) breaking waves, respectively. The governing equations are solved by the finite volume method in a Cartesian staggered grid and the partial cell treatment is implemented to deal with complex geometries. The SIMPLE or PISO algorithms are utilized for the pressure-velocity coupling and a backward finite difference discretization is used for the time derivative. The air-water interface is modelled by the interface capturing method via a high resolution VOF (Volume of Fluid) scheme. The numerical model is validated by simulating 2D overturning waves on a sloping beach and over a reef, and 3D solitary wave run-up on a conical island, in which good agreement between numerical results and experimental measurements is obtained. Moreover, the overturning jet and subsequent splash-up are captured in the computation. The numerical model is further employed to investigate 2D breaking solitary waves on a sloping beach, 2D periodic breaking waves (both spilling and plunging breakers) in the surf zone, and 3D overturning waves over a submerged conical island. Numerical results in the absence of wind are presented and compared with available experimental data, and then the effect of wind is included in the computation of breaking waves. The key findings of this thesis are that the wind can influence the kinematics and dynamics of breaking waves, as onshore winds assist the development of water particle velocities towards the critical wave phase speed, cause the wave to break earlier in a deeper water further off shore. There is recirculation of air flow above the wave crest in the absence of wind whereas air flow separation is observed in the presence of a sufficiently strong wind. In addition, the wind affects the shape of the overturning jet, generation of vorticity, and energy transformation and dissipation during wave breaking. This study has contributed to the characteristics of breaking waves, focusing on the period during wave overturning. The information gained in this study shed some light on wind effects on breaking waves, which have import implications for coastal engineering and air-sea interaction.

Abstract

Ring rot disease is one of the most common diseases in pear orchards. To better understand the physiology, biochemistry and autophagic changes of different pear varieties after Botryosphaeria dothidea (B.dothidea) infection, we evaluated eight different pear varieties for B. dothidea resistance. The susceptible varieties had larger spot diameters, lower chlorophyll contents and higher malondialdehyde contents than the resistant varieties. In disease-resistant varieties, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were relatively lower, while the ROS metabolism (antioxidant enzyme activities and the ascorbic acid–glutathione cycle) was also maintained at higher levels, and it induced a significant upregulation of related gene expression. In addition, autophagy, as an important evaluation index, was found to have more autophagic activity in disease-resistant varieties than in susceptible varieties, suggesting that pathogen infestation drives plants to increase autophagy to defend against pathogens. In summary, the results of this study reveal that different resistant pear varieties enhance plant resistance to the disease through a series of physio-biochemical changes and autophagic activity after inoculation with B. dothidea. This study provides clear physiological and biochemical traits for pear disease resistance selection, potential genetic resources and material basis for pear disease control and disease resistance, breeding and points out the direction for research on the mechanism of pear resistance to B. dothidea.
