The success of deep learning heavily depends on the availability of large labeled training sets. However, it is hard to get large labeled datasets in medical image domain because of the strict privacy concern and costly labeling efforts. Contrastive learning, an unsupervised learning technique, has been proved powerful in learning image-level representations from unlabeled data. The learned encoder can then be transferred or fine-tuned to improve the performance of downstream tasks with limited labels. A critical step in contrastive learning is the generation of contrastive data pairs, which is relatively simple for natural image classification but quite challenging for medical image segmentation due to the existence of the same tissue or organ across the dataset. As a result, when applied to medical image segmentation, most state-of-the-art contrastive learning frameworks inevitably introduce a lot of false-negative pairs and result in degraded segmentation quality. To address this issue, we propose a novel positional contrastive learning (PCL) framework to generate contrastive data pairs by leveraging the position information in volumetric medical images. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a potential separation between the septum, primum and septum secundum located in the anterosuperior portion of the atrial septum. PFO is one of the main factors causing cryptogenic stroke which is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. For PFO diagnosis, contrast transthoracic echocardiography (cTTE) is preferred as being a more robust method compared with others. However, the current PFO diagnosis through cTTE is extremely slow as it is proceeded manually by sonographers on echocardiography videos. Currently there is no publicly available dataset for this important topic in the community. In this paper, we present EchoCP, as the first echocardiography dataset in cTTE targeting PFO diagnosis. EchoCP consists of 30 patients with both rest and Valsalva maneuver videos which covers various PFO grades. We further establish an automated baseline method for PFO diagnosis based on the state-of-the-art cardiac chamber segmentation technique, which achieves 0.89 average mean Dice score, but only 0.60/0.67 mean accuracies for PFO diagnosis, leaving large room for improvement. We hope that the challenging EchoCP dataset can stimulate further research and lead to innovative and generic solutions that would have an impact in multiple domains. Retinal blood vessel can assist doctors in diagnosis of eye-related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and its segmentation is particularly important for automatic retinal image analysis. However, it is challenging to segment these vessels structures, especially the thin capillaries from the color retinal image due to low contrast and ambiguousness. In this paper, we propose pyramid U-Net for accurate retinal vessel segmentation. In pyramid U-Net, the proposed pyramid-scale aggregation blocks (PSABs) are employed in both the encoder and decoder to aggregate features at higher, current and lower levels. In this way, coarse-to-fine context information is shared and aggregated in each block thus to improve the location of capillaries. To further improve performance, two optimizations including pyramid inputs enhancement and deep pyramid supervision are applied to PSABs in the encoder and decoder, respectively. For PSABs in the encoder, scaled input images are added as extra inputs. While for PSABs in the decoder, scaled intermediate outputs are supervised by the scaled segmentation labels. The behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number ($Pr_t$) for buoyancy-affected flows near a vertical surface is investigated as an extension study of {Gibson \& Leslie, \emph{Int. Comm. Heat Mass Transfer}, Vol. 11, pp. 73-84 (1984)}. By analysing the location of mean velocity maxima in a differentially heated vertical planar channel, we {identify an} {infinity anomaly} for the eddy viscosity $\nu_t$ and the turbulent Prandtl number $Pr_t$, as both terms are divided by the mean velocity gradient according to the standard definition, in vertical buoyant flow. To predict the quantities of interest, e.g. the Nusselt number, a machine learning framework via symbolic regression is used with various cost functions, e.g. the mean velocity gradient, with the aid of the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset for vertical natural and mixed convection. The study has yielded two key outcomes: $(i)$ the new machine learnt algebraic models, as the reciprocal of $Pr_t$, successfully handle the infinity issue for both vertical natural and mixed convection; and $(ii)$ the proposed models with embedded coordinate frame invariance can be conveniently implemented in the Reynolds-averaged scalar equation and are proven to be robust and accurate in the current parameter space, where the Rayleigh number spans from $10^5$ to $10^9 $ for vertical natural convection and the bulk Richardson number $Ri_b $ is in the range of $ 0$ and $ 0.1$ for vertical mixed convection.

Semantic image segmentation aims to obtain object labels with precise boundaries, which usually suffers from overfitting. Recently, various data augmentation strategies like regional dropout and mix strategies have been proposed to address the problem. These strategies have proved to be effective for guiding the model to attend on less discriminative parts. However, current strategies operate at the image level, and objects and the background are coupled. Thus, the boundaries are not well augmented due to the fixed semantic scenario. In this paper, we propose ObjectAug to perform object-level augmentation for semantic image segmentation. ObjectAug first decouples the image into individual objects and the background using the semantic labels. Next, each object is augmented individually with commonly used augmentation methods (e.g., scaling, shifting, and rotation). Then, the black area brought by object augmentation is further restored using image inpainting. Finally, the augmented objects and background are assembled as an augmented image. In this way, the boundaries can be fully explored in the various semantic scenarios. In addition, ObjectAug can support category-aware augmentation that gives various possibilities to objects in each category, and can be easily combined with existing image-level augmentation methods to further boost performance. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on both natural image and medical image datasets. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of birth defect, which occurs 1 in every 110 births in the United States. CHD usually comes with severe variations in heart structure and great artery connections that can be classified into many types. Thus highly specialized domain knowledge and the time-consuming human process is needed to analyze the associated medical images. On the other hand, due to the complexity of CHD and the lack of dataset, little has been explored on the automatic diagnosis (classification) of CHDs. In this paper, we present ImageCHD, the first medical image dataset for CHD classification. ImageCHD contains 110 3D Computed Tomography (CT) images covering most types of CHD, which is of decent size Classification of CHDs requires the identification of large structural changes without any local tissue changes, with limited data. It is an example of a larger class of problems that are quite difficult for current machine-learning-based vision methods to solve. To demonstrate this, we further present a baseline framework for the automatic classification of CHD, based on a state-of-the-art CHD segmentation method. Experimental results show that the baseline framework can only achieve a classification accuracy of 82.0\% under a selective prediction scheme with 88.4\% coverage, leaving big room for further improvement. We hope that ImageCHD can stimulate further research and lead to innovative and generic solutions that would have an impact in multiple domains. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of death globally, and its diagnosis is usually based on manual myocardial segmentation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) sequences. As the manual segmentation is tedious, time-consuming and with low applicability, automatic myocardial segmentation using machine learning techniques has been widely explored recently. However, almost all the existing methods treat the input MRI sequences independently, which fails to capture the temporal information between sequences, e.g., the shape and location information of the myocardium in sequences along time. In this paper, we propose a myocardial segmentation framework for sequence of cardiac MRI (CMR) scanning images of left ventricular cavity, right ventricular cavity, and myocardium. Specifically, we propose to combine conventional networks and recurrent networks to incorporate temporal information between sequences to ensure temporal consistent. We evaluated our framework on the Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) dataset. Human video motion transfer (HVMT) aims to synthesize videos that one person imitates other persons' actions. Although existing GAN-based HVMT methods have achieved great success, they either fail to preserve appearance details due to the loss of spatial consistency between synthesized and exemplary images, or generate incoherent video results due to the lack of temporal consistency among video frames. In this paper, we propose Coarse-to-Fine Flow Warping Network (C2F-FWN) for spatial-temporal consistent HVMT. Particularly, C2F-FWN utilizes coarse-to-fine flow warping and Layout-Constrained Deformable Convolution (LC-DConv) to improve spatial consistency, and employs Flow Temporal Consistency (FTC) Loss to enhance temporal consistency. In addition, provided with multi-source appearance inputs, C2F-FWN can support appearance attribute editing with great flexibility and efficiency. Besides public datasets, we also collected a large-scale HVMT dataset named SoloDance for evaluation. Extensive experiments conducted on our SoloDance dataset and the iPER dataset show that our approach outperforms state-of-art HVMT methods in terms of both spatial and temporal consistency. Weakly-supervised learning has attracted growing research attention on medical lesions segmentation due to significant saving in pixel-level annotation cost. However, 1) most existing methods require effective prior and constraints to explore the intrinsic lesions characterization, which only generates incorrect and rough prediction; 2) they neglect the underlying semantic dependencies among weakly-labeled target enteroscopy diseases and fully-annotated source gastroscope lesions, while forcefully utilizing untransferable dependencies leads to the negative performance. To tackle above issues, we propose a new weakly-supervised lesions transfer framework, which can not only explore transferable domain-invariant knowledge across different datasets, but also prevent the negative transfer of untransferable representations. Specifically, a Wasserstein quantified transferability framework is developed to highlight widerange transferable contextual dependencies, while neglecting the irrelevant semantic characterizations. Moreover, a novel selfsupervised pseudo label generator is designed to equally provide confident pseudo pixel labels for both hard-to-transfer and easyto-transfer target samples. It inhibits the enormous deviation of false pseudo pixel labels under the self-supervision manner. Afterwards, dynamically-searched feature centroids are aligned to narrow category-wise distribution shift. Deep learning had already demonstrated its power in medical images, including denoising, classification, segmentation, etc. All these applications are proposed to automatically analyze medical images beforehand, which brings more information to radiologists during clinical assessment for accuracy improvement. Recently, many medical denoising methods had shown their significant artifact reduction result and noise removal both quantitatively and qualitatively. However, those existing methods are developed around human-vision, i.e., they are designed to minimize the noise effect that can be perceived by human eyes. In this paper, we introduce an application-guided denoising framework, which focuses on denoising for the following neural networks. In our experiments, we apply the proposed framework to different datasets, models, and use cases. Experimental results show that our proposed framework can achieve a better result than human-vision denoising network.

Unsupervised domain adaptation without consuming annotation process for unlabeled target data attracts appealing interests in semantic segmentation. However, 1) existing methods neglect that not all semantic representations across domains are transferable, which cripples domain-wise transfer with untransferable knowledge; 2) they fail to narrow category-wise distribution shift due to category-agnostic feature alignment. To address above challenges, we develop a new Critical Semantic-Consistent Learning (CSCL) model, which mitigates the discrepancy of both domain-wise and category-wise distributions. Specifically, a critical transfer based adversarial framework is designed to highlight transferable domain-wise knowledge while neglecting untransferable knowledge. Transferability-critic guides transferability-quantizer to maximize positive transfer gain under reinforcement learning manner, although negative transfer of untransferable knowledge occurs. Meanwhile, with the help of confidence-guided pseudo labels generator of target samples, a symmetric soft divergence loss is presented to explore inter-class relationships and facilitate category-wise distribution alignment. Real-time cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an increasingly important role in guiding various cardiac interventions. In order to provide better visual assistance, the cine MRI frames need to be segmented on-the-fly to avoid noticeable visual lag. In addition, considering reliability and patient data privacy, the computation is preferably done on local hardware. State-of-the-art MRI segmentation methods mostly focus on accuracy only, and can hardly be adopted for real-time application or on local hardware. In this work, we present the first hardware-aware multi-scale neural architecture search (NAS) framework for real-time 3D cardiac cine MRI segmentation. The proposed framework incorporates a latency regularization term into the loss function to handle real-time constraints, with the consideration of underlying hardware. In addition, the formulation is fully differentiable with respect to the architecture parameters, so that stochastic gradient descent (SGD) can be used for optimization to reduce the computation cost while maintaining optimization quality. Experimental results on ACDC MICCAI 2017 dataset demonstrate that our hardware-aware multi-scale NAS framework can reduce the latency by up to 3.5 times and satisfy the real-time constraints, while still achieving competitive segmentation accuracy, compared with the state-of-the-art NAS segmentation framework., Comment: 8 pages, conference

Real-time cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an increasingly important role in various cardiac interventions. In order to enable fast and accurate visual assistance, the temporal frames need to be segmented on-the-fly. However, state-of-the-art MRI segmentation methods are used either offline because of their high computation complexity, or in real-time but with significant accuracy loss and latency increase (causing visually noticeable lag). As such, they can hardly be adopted to assist visual guidance. In this work, inspired by a new interpretation of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for learning, we propose a novel ICA-UNet for real-time 3D cardiac cine MRI segmentation. Experiments using the MICCAI ACDC 2017 dataset show that, compared with the state-of-the-arts, ICA-UNet not only achieves higher Dice scores, but also meets the real-time requirements for both throughput and latency (up to 12.6X reduction), enabling real-time guidance for cardiac interventions without visual lag., Comment: MICCAI2020, 12 pages, 3 figures

The strict security requirements placed on medical records by various privacy regulations become major obstacles in the age of big data. To ensure efficient machine learning as a service schemes while protecting data confidentiality, in this work, we propose blind UNET (BUNET), a secure protocol that implements privacy-preserving medical image segmentation based on the UNET architecture. In BUNET, we efficiently utilize cryptographic primitives such as homomorphic encryption and garbled circuits (GC) to design a complete secure protocol for the UNET neural architecture. In addition, we perform extensive architectural search in reducing the computational bottleneck of GC-based secure activation protocols with high-dimensional input data. Online metric learning has been widely exploited for large-scale data classification due to the low computational cost. However, amongst online practical scenarios where the features are evolving (e.g., some features are vanished and some new features are augmented), most metric learning models cannot be successfully applied to these scenarios, although they can tackle the evolving instances efficiently. To address the challenge, we develop a new online Evolving Metric Learning (EML) model for incremental and decremental features, which can handle the instance and feature evolutions simultaneously by incorporating with a smoothed Wasserstein metric distance. Specifically, our model contains two essential stages: a Transforming stage (T-stage) and a Inheriting stage (I-stage). For the T-stage, we propose to extract important information from vanished features while neglecting non-informative knowledge, and forward it into survived features by transforming them into a low-rank discriminative metric space. It further explores the intrinsic low-rank structure of heterogeneous samples to reduce the computation and memory burden especially for highly-dimensional large-scale data. For the I-stage, we inherit the metric performance of survived features from the T-stage and then expand to include the new augmented features. Moreover, a smoothed Wasserstein distance is utilized to characterize the similarity relationships among the heterogeneous and complex samples, since the evolving features are not strictly aligned in the different stages. In addition to tackling the challenges in one-shot case, we also extend our model into multishot scenario. Unsupervised domain adaptation has attracted growing research attention on semantic segmentation. However, 1) most existing models cannot be directly applied into lesions transfer of medical images, due to the diverse appearances of same lesion among different datasets; 2) equal attention has been paid into all semantic representations instead of neglecting irrelevant knowledge, which leads to negative transfer of untransferable knowledge. To address these challenges, we develop a new unsupervised semantic transfer model including two complementary modules (i.e., T_D and T_F ) for endoscopic lesions segmentation, which can alternatively determine where and how to explore transferable domain-invariant knowledge between labeled source lesions dataset (e.g., gastroscope) and unlabeled target diseases dataset (e.g., enteroscopy). Specifically, T_D focuses on where to translate transferable visual information of medical lesions via residual transferability-aware bottleneck, while neglecting untransferable visual characterizations. Furthermore, T_F highlights how to augment transferable semantic features of various lesions and automatically ignore untransferable representations, which explores domain-invariant knowledge and in return improves the performance of T_D. We found that the real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detection of viral RNA from sputum or nasopharyngeal swab has a relatively low positive rate in the early stage to determine COVID-19 (named by the World Health Organization). The manifestations of computed tomography (CT) imaging of COVID-19 had their own characteristics, which are different from other types of viral pneumonia, such as Influenza-A viral pneumonia. Therefore, clinical doctors call for another early diagnostic criteria for this new type of pneumonia as soon as possible.This study aimed to establish an early screening model to distinguish COVID-19 pneumonia from Influenza-A viral pneumonia and healthy cases with pulmonary CT images using deep learning techniques. The candidate infection regions were first segmented out using a 3-dimensional deep learning model from pulmonary CT image set. These separated images were then categorized into COVID-19, Influenza-A viral pneumonia and irrelevant to infection groups, together with the corresponding confidence scores using a location-attention classification model. Finally the infection type and total confidence score of this CT case were calculated with Noisy-or Bayesian function.The experiments result of benchmark dataset showed that the overall accuracy was 86.7 % from the perspective of CT cases as a whole.The deep learning models established in this study were effective for the early screening of COVID-19 patients and demonstrated to be a promising supplementary diagnostic method for frontline clinical doctors.

Human video motion transfer has a wide range of applications in multimedia, computer vision and graphics. Recently, due to the rapid development of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), there has been significant progress in the field. However, almost all existing GAN-based works are prone to address the mapping from human motions to video scenes, with scene appearances are encoded individually in the trained models. Therefore, each trained model can only generate videos with a specific scene appearance, new models are required to be trained to generate new appearances. Besides, existing works lack the capability of appearance control. For example, users have to provide video records of wearing new clothes or performing in new backgrounds to enable clothes or background changing in their synthetic videos, which greatly limits the application flexibility. In this paper, we propose GAC-GAN, a general method for appearance-controllable human video motion transfer. To enable general-purpose appearance synthesis, we propose to include appearance information in the conditioning inputs. Thus, once trained, our model can generate new appearances by altering the input appearance information. To achieve appearance control, we first obtain the appearance-controllable conditioning inputs and then utilize a two-stage GAC-GAN to generate the corresponding appearance-controllable outputs, where we utilize an ACGAN loss and a shadow extraction module for output foreground and background appearance control respectively. We further build a solo dance dataset containing a large number of dance videos for training and evaluation. Product reviews are extremely valuable for online shoppers in providing purchase decisions. Driven by immense profit incentives, fraudsters deliberately fabricate untruthful reviews to distort the reputation of online products. As online reviews become more and more important, group spamming, i.e., a team of fraudsters working collaboratively to attack a set of target products, becomes a new fashion. Previous works use review network effects, i.e. the relationships among reviewers, reviews, and products, to detect fake reviews or review spammers, but ignore time effects, which are critical in characterizing group spamming. In this paper, we propose a novel Markov random field (MRF)-based method (ColluEagle) to detect collusive review spammers, as well as review spam campaigns, considering both network effects and time effects. First we identify co-review pairs, a review phenomenon that happens between two reviewers who review a common product in a similar way, and then model reviewers and their co-review pairs as a pairwise-MRF, and use loopy belief propagation to evaluate the suspiciousness of reviewers. We further design a high quality yet easy-to-compute node prior for ColluEagle, through which the review spammer groups can also be subsequently identified. Experiments show that ColluEagle can not only detect collusive spammers with high precision, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art baselines --- FraudEagle and SpEagle, but also identify highly suspicious review spammer campaigns., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

The primary goal of ad-hoc retrieval (document retrieval in the context of question answering) is to find relevant documents satisfied the information need posted in a natural language query. It requires a good understanding of the query and all the documents in a corpus, which is difficult because the meaning of natural language texts depends on the context, syntax,and semantics. Recently deep neural networks have been used to rank search results in response to a query. In this paper, we devise a multi-resolution neural network(MRNN) to leverage the whole hierarchy of representations for document retrieval. The proposed MRNN model is capable of deriving a representation that integrates representations of different levels of abstraction from all the layers of the learned hierarchical representation.Moreover, a duplex attention component is designed to refinethe multi-resolution representation so that an optimal contextfor matching the query and document can be determined. More specifically, the first attention mechanism determines optimal context from the learned multi-resolution representation for the query and document. The latter attention mechanism aims to fine-tune the representation so that the query and the relevant document are closer in proximity. The empirical study shows that MRNN with the duplex attention is significantly superior to existing models used for ad-hoc retrieval on benchmark datasets including SQuAD, WikiQA, QUASAR, and TrecQA.
