Background: Exercise can promote sustainable protection against cold and warm liver ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI) and tumor metastases. We have shown that this protection is by the induction of hepatic mitochondrial biogenesis pathway. In this study, we hypothesize that ZLN005, a PGC-1α activator, can be utilized as an alternative therapeutic strategy. Methods: Eight-week-old mice were pretreated with ZLN005 and subjected to liver warm IRI. To establish a liver metastatic model, MC38 cancer cells (1 × 106) were injected into the spleen, followed by splenectomy and liver IRI. Results: ZLN005-pretreated mice showed a significant decrease in IRI-induced tissue injury as measured by serum ALT/AST/LDH levels and tissue necrosis. ZLN005 pretreatment decreased ROS generation and cell apoptosis at the site of injury, with a significant decrease in serum pro-inflammatory cytokines, innate immune cells infiltration, and intrahepatic neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. Moreover, mitochondrial mass was significantly upregulated in hepatocytes and maintained after IRI. This was confirmed in murine and human hepatocytes treated with ZLN005 in vitro under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Additionally, ZLN005 preconditioning significantly attenuated tumor burden and increased the percentage of intratumoral cytotoxic T cells. Conclusions: Our study highlights the effective protection of ZLN005 pretreatment as a therapeutic alternative in terms of acute liver injury and tumor metastases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many real-world applications arising from social networks, personalized recommendations, and others, require extracting a relatively small but broadly representative portion of massive data sets. Such problems can often be formulated as maximizing a monotone set function with cardinality constraints. In this paper, we consider a streaming model where elements arrive quickly over time, and create an effective, and low-memory algorithm. First, we provide the first single-pass linear-time algorithm, which is a a deterministic algorithm, achieves an approximation ratio of [ γ 4 a (1 + γ + γ 2 + γ 3) − ] for any ≥ 0 with a query complexity of ⌈ n / a ⌉ + a and a memory complexity of O (a k log (k) log (1 /)) , where a is a positive integer and γ is the submodularity ratio. However, the algorithm may produce less-than-ideal results. Our next result is to describe a multi-streaming algorithm, which is the first deterministic algorithm to attain an approximation ratio of 1 − e − γ − with linear query complexity. Simple Summary: The construction of dams in Mabiehe River has significantly impacted fish diversity, resulting in reduced species richness and diversity within dammed sections compared to undammed segments of the river. The environmental DNA (eDNA) technique is effective in assessing fish diversity in the challenging environment of canyon rivers. The successful detection of a variety of species, including both protected and exotic ones, highlights the robustness of eDNA as a comprehensive monitoring tool. Investigating fish diversity in canyon rivers through conventional fish surveys is challenging due to precipitous conditions, including steep slopes, rapid water flow, and complex habitats. Additionally, intensive construction of dams has further complicated the understanding of contemporary fish diversity in these rivers. In this study, we used the environmental DNA (eDNA) technique to assess fish diversity and examine the effects of dams on fish diversity in the Mabiehe River, a canyon river in the upper reaches of the Pearl River drainage. Water samples from 15 sampling sites were collected, yielding 9,356,148 valid sequences. Utilizing the NCBI public database, a total of 60 freshwater fish species were identified, with Carassius auratus, Cyprinus carpio, and Pelteobagrus fulvidraco being the most dominant species in the Mabiehe River. We also detected one nationally protected fish species, three provincially protected fish species, and six exotic species in this river. Furthermore, eDNA analyses demonstrated that the lotic river sections harbor more species and greater diversity than dammed sections, suggesting that dams might exert significant impacts on local fish diversity. Overall, this study supports the effectiveness of the eDNA technique as a complementary tool to traditional field surveys for monitoring fish biodiversity in canyon rivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban parks serve as vital spaces for leisure, social interaction, and nature engagement. At the same time, climate change disproportionately impacts densely populated megacities. While extensive research exists on climate change's effects on mortality, agriculture, and economic activities, less is known about its impact on urban park usage. Understanding their temporal usage and how temperature changes affect park visitation is crucial for maximizing park benefits and building resiliency. This study analyzes long-term, hourly park visitation data on Dallas, Texas, using digital trace data from SafeGraph (San Francisco, CA, USA), which covers mobile records from approximately 10% of U.S. devices. We focus on five established parks in Dallas and examine their historical temperature data from 2018 to 2022. Descriptive statistics and scatter graphs are utilized to analyze temperature- and demographic-specific visitation patterns. The results of the study highlight the impact of climate change on park visitation and reveal how extreme temperatures influence visitation patterns across parks in Dallas. Additionally, this study explores the differences in visitation based on weekdays versus weekends and highlights demographic disparities. Notably, we examine the implications of nighttime park usage during extreme heat conditions. Our work is informative for urban planners seeking to improve park facilities and comfort amid climate change, ultimately enhancing the resilience and well-being of urban communities.
