Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare subset of NSCLC that accounts for about 0.5-1% of all primary lung carcinoma, and its malignant biological behavior is more aggressive than other pathological types of lung cancer. Recent studies have reported a variety of gene mutations associated with the occurrence, development and treatment of PSC, especially the mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) proto-oncogene alterations, including the exon 14 (METex14) skipping mutations as well as the amplification and overexpression of MET gene, which are associated with molecularly targeted therapy for PSC. METex14 skipping mutation is the most common and well-studied mutation type, occurring in about 22-31.8% of PSC patients, while the prevalence of MET amplification is reported as 4.8-13.6% and MET ovexpression is about 20.2%. Molecular pathology tests, including IHC and NGS, are valuable in determining the prognosis of patients with PSC and helping to determine the treatment. The existing clinical data have confirmed the efficacy of MET-TKI in PSC patients with MET alteration, among which the clinical study of Savolitinib has enrolled the largest proportion of PSC patients and achieved relatively good efficacy, but more clinical researches are still needed. The multi-disciplinary team may maximize the optimal treatment options for patients with the advanced PSC.

BackgroundTo investigate the dynamic changes of urine N6-methyladenosine (m6A) levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and diabetic nephropathy (DN) and evaluate the clinical significance.MethodsFirst, the levels of urine m6A were examined and compared among 62 patients with T2DM, 70 patients with DN, and 52 age- and gender-matched normal glucose tolerant subjects (NGT) by using a MethyIFIashTM Urine m6A Quantification Kit. Subsequently, we compared the concentrations of urine m6A between different stages of DN. Moreover, statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the association of urine m6A with DN.ResultsThe levels of m6A were significantly decreased in patients with DN [(16.10 ± 6.48) ng/ml], compared with NGT [(23.12 ± 7.52) ng/ml, P < 0.0001] and patients with T2DM [(20.39 ± 7.16) ng/ml, P < 0.0001]. Moreover, the concentrations of urine m6A were obviously reduced with the deterioration of DN. Pearson rank correlation and regression analyses revealed that m6A was significantly associated with DN (P < 0.05). The areas under the receiver operator characteristics curve (AUC) were 0.783 (95% CI, 0.699 – 0.867, P < 0.0001) for the DN and NGT groups, and 0.737 (95% CI, 0.639 – 0.835, P < 0.0001) for the macroalbuminuria and normoalbuminuria groups, and the optimal cutoff value for m6A to distinguish the DN from NGT and the macroalbuminuria from normoalbuminuria cases was 0.4687 (diagnostic sensitivity, 71%; diagnostic specificity, 76%) and 0.4494 (diagnostic sensitivity, 79%; diagnostic specificity, 66%), respectively.ConclusionsThe levels of urine m6A are significantly decreased in patients with DN and change with the deterioration of DN, which could serve as a prospective biomarker for the diagnosis of DN.

ObjectiveTo study the effect of precision probiotic strains transplantation capsules on diarrhea irritable bowel syndrome compared with fecal microbiota transplantation capsules and live combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium capsules.MethodsTwo patients with severe irritable bowel syndrome were treated with precision probiotic strains transplantation capsules, fecal microbiota transplantation capsules and live combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium capsules in sequence. IBS-SSS, IBS-QoL, GSRS, stool frequency, stool character, degree of abdominal pain, GAD-7, and PHQ9 scores of patients at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks of treatment were monitored and recorded, and stool samples were collected for metagenomics and metabolomics.ResultsIt was found that the IBS-SSS score of patient case 1 decreased by 175 points and that of patient case 2 decreased by 100 points after treatment of precision probiotic strains transplantation capsules. There was no significant decrease after fecal microbiota transplantation capsules and live combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium capsules were used. At the same time, compared with fecal microbiota transplantation and live combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium capsules, the IBS QoL, stool frequency, stool character, degree of abdominal pain and GAD-7 score of patient case 1 improved more significantly by the precision probiotic strains transplantation capsules. And the stool frequency and stool character score of patient case 2 decreased more significantly. Intestinal microbiota also improved more significantly after the precise capsule transplantation treatment. And we found Eubacterium_ Eligens showed the same change trend in the treatment of two patients, which may play a role in the treatment.Conclusionprecision probiotic strains transplantation capsules is more beneficial to improve the intestinal microbiota of patients than microbiota transplantation capsule and live combined bacillus subtilis and enterococcus faecium capsules, so as to better alleviate clinical symptoms. This study provides a more perfect and convenient therapeutic drugs for the treatment of IBS.

The hemp flea beetle Psylliodes attenuata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Psylliodes) is a common pest of Cannabis sativa, including cultivars of both medicinal marijuana and industrial hemp. Both the larval and adult stages of this beetle can cause significant damages to C. sativa, resulting in substantial crop losses. At present, little is known about the bacterial and fungal community diversity among populations of this pest insect. In the present study, we obtained P. attenuata samples from nine field sites representing broad industrial hemp productions in China and analyzed their microbial communities using DNA metabarcoding. Bacterial sequences of all the samples were assigned to 3728 OTUs, which belonged to 45 phyla, 1058 genera and 1960 known species. The most common genera were Rickettsia, Wolbachia, and Candidatus_Brownia. Fungal sequences of all the samples were assigned to 910 OTUs, which belonged to 9 phyla, 308 genera and 464 known species. The most common fungal genera were Cladosporium, Cutaneotrichosporon, and Aspergillus. Principal coordinate analysis revealed a significant difference in the bacterial and fungal community structure among the nine P. attenuata populations. Understanding the microbial symbionts may provide clues to help develop potential biocontrol techniques against this pest.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), one of the fastest growing metabolic diseases, has been characterized by metabolic disorders including hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance (IR). In recent years, T2DM has become the fastest growing metabolic disease in the world. Studies have indicated that patients with T2DM are often associated with intestinal flora disorders and dysfunction involving multiple organs. Metabolites of the intestinal flora, such as bile acids (BAs), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and amino acids (AAs)may influence to some extent the decreased insulin sensitivity associated with T2DM dysfunction and regulate metabolic as well as immune homeostasis. In this paper, we review the changes in the gut flora in T2DM and the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota modulates metabolites affecting T2DM, which may provide a basis for the early identification of T2DM-susceptible individuals and guide targeted interventions. Finally, we also highlight gut microecological therapeutic strategies focused on shaping the gut flora to inform the improvement of T2DM progression.

Thermal plasma process has been recognized as a clean technology to pyrolyze a wide variety of hydrocarbons to produce light gasses at extreme conditions. To tackle the engineering issues related with scale-up of such an ultra-high temperature reactor, we herein propose a novel design of thermal plasma array reactor (TPAR), which accommodates multiple arcs in staggered array mode inside the reactor with replaceable graphite-rod electrodes. The feed hydrocarbons flow through the arc-intertwined high-temperature zone with anticipated mixing and heat transfer intensification. To illustrate the essential features of the TPAR design, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to reveal the influence of the reactor design on the mixing and reaction performance using the methane pyrolysis process as a case in the TPAR. It is demonstrated that the energy consumption for the methane to acetylene production can achieve satisfactory results in a rather simplified TPAR design.

Summary: Background: Despite significant progress in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) by using dexamethasone combined with palonosetron for patients who received moderate-emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC), some of these patients still suffer from CINV. We evaluated whether aprepitant combined with palonosetron can improve the efficacy in the prevention of CINV in patients receiving MEC. Methods: This was a single-centre, open-label, phase III, randomized controlled trial, which was done at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University of China. The registered patients planned to receive mFOLFOX6 (oxaliplatin, leucovorin, and 5-fluorouracil) but had not received any chemotherapy previously. The patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to the aprepitant group (aprepitant 125 mg orally on day 1, 80 mg on day 2-3) and the dexamethasone group (dexamethasone 10 mg intravenously on day 1, 5 mg on days 2 and 3), both groups with palonosetron 0.25 mg intravenously on day 1. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients who achieved a complete response (CR), defined as the absence of vomiting and no use of rescue medications in the overall phase (0–120 h). The primary outcome and safety were assessed in the modified intention-to-treat population, which excluded all patients who used estazolam within 24 h before registration and those who refused to keep a diary documenting the severity of nausea, frequency of vomiting, and the use of rescue therapy. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02909478. Findings: Between Sep 1, 2017, and Oct 23, 2019, 320 patients were enrolled, and 315 patients were evaluated. Methylglyoxal, a major precursor of advanced glycation end products, is elevated in the plasma of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Islet β-cell function was recently shown to be regulated by N6-methyladenosine (m6A), an RNA modification consisting of methylation at the N6 position of adenosine. However, the role of m6A methylation modification in methylglyoxal-induced impairment of insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells has not been clarified. In this study, we showed that treatment of two β-cell lines, NIT-1 and β-TC-6, with methylglyoxal reduced m6A RNA content and methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) expression levels. We also showed that silencing of METTL3 inhibited glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) from NIT-1 cells, whereas upregulation of METTL3 significantly reversed the methylglyoxal-induced decrease in GSIS. The methylglyoxal-induced decreases in m6A RNA levels and METTL3 expression were not altered by knockdown of the receptor for the advanced glycation end product but were further decreased by silencing of glyoxalase 1. Mechanistic investigations revealed that silencing of METTL3 reduced m6A levels, mRNA stability, and the mRNA and protein expression levels of musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene family A (MafA). Overexpression of MafA greatly improved the decrease in GSIS induced by METTL3 silencing; silencing of MafA blocked the reversal of the MG-induced decrease in GSIS caused by METTL3 overexpression. The current study demonstrated that METTL3 ameliorates MG-induced impairment of insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells by regulating MafA.

Background: Overweight and obesity lead to a range of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Physical activity (PA) is an important lifestyle behavior for controlling body weight. Dietary inflammatory index (DII), which is associated with systemic inflammatory markers, is used to evaluate the potential of dietary inflammation. This is the first study to investigate the independent and joint associations of PA and DII with the risk of overweight/obesity among US adults. Methods: Participants and data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007–2018, which is designed to examine the health and nutritional status of the non-institutionalized US population by a complex, multi-stage, probability sampling design. Results: A total of 10723 US adults were selected. Physically active participants had lower overweight/obesity risk (total-time PA: OR = 0.756, 95% CI: 0.669–0.855; leisure-time PA: OR = 0.723, 95% CI: 0.643–0.813; and walk/bicycle-time PA: OR = 0.748, 95% CI: 0.639–0.875); however, those with work-time PA showed no significant association between PA and overweight/obesity. Compared with participants in the lowest DII group (Q1), those in the other three groups had high risks of overweight/obesity (Q2: OR = 1.218, 95% CI: 1.054–1.409; Q3: OR = 1.452, 95% CI: 1.245–1.693; Q4: OR = 1.763, 95% CI: 1.495–2.079). In joint analyses, PA was not eligible for reducing risks of weight/obesity if far more pro-inflammatory diet (Q4 of DII = 2.949–5.502) was taken in (total-time PA: OR = 1.725, 95% CI: 1.420–2.097; leisure-time PA: OR = 1.627, 95% CI: 1.258–2.105; walk/bicycle-time PA: OR = 1.583, 95% CI: 1.074–2.332; and work-time PA: OR = 1.919, 95% CI: 1.493–2.467). Conclusions: More leisure-time PA and walk/bicycle-time PA are associated with lower risk of overweight/obesity, and higher DII is associated with higher risk of overweight/obesity. In addition, higher DII impacts overweight/obesity substantially: once the DII score reached Q4, there is still risks of overweight/obesity even if PA is performed.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained remarkable interest in water treatment due to their fascinating characteristics, such as tunable functionality, large specific surface area, customizable pore size and porosity, and good chemical and thermal stability. However, MOF particles tend to easily agglomerate in nanoscale, thus decreasing their activity and processing convenience. It is necessary to shape MOF nanocrystals into maneuverable structures. The in situ growth or ex situ incorporation of MOFs into inexpensive and abundant cellulose-family materials can be effective strategies for the stabilization of these MOF species, and therefore can make available a range of enhanced properties that expand the industrial application possibilities of cellulose and MOFs. This paper provides a review of studies on recent advances in the application of multi-dimensional MOF–cellulose composites (e.g., aerogels, membranes, and bulk materials) in wastewater remediation (e.g., metals, dyes, drugs, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils) and water regeneration by adsorption, photo- or chemocatalysis, and membrane separation strategies. The advantages brought about by combining MOFs and cellulose are described, and the performance of MOF–cellulose is described and compared to its counterparts. The mechanisms of relative MOF–cellulose materials in processing aquatic pollutants are included. Existing challenges and perspectives for future research are proposed.

As a widely used brain–computer interface (BCI) paradigm, steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCIs have the advantages of high information transfer rates, high tolerance for artifacts, and robust performance across diverse users. However, the incidence of mental fatigue from prolonged, repetitive stimulation is a critical issue for SSVEP-based BCIs. Music is often used as a convenient, non-invasive means of relieving mental fatigue. This study investigates the compensatory effect of music on mental fatigue through the introduction of different modes of background music in long-duration, SSVEP-BCI tasks. Changes in electroencephalography power index, SSVEP amplitude, and signal-to-noise ratio were used to assess participants’ mental fatigue. The study’s results show that the introduction of exciting background music to the SSVEP-BCI task was effective in relieving participants’ mental fatigue. In addition, for continuous SSVEP-BCI tasks, a combination of musical modes that used soothing background music during the rest interval phase proved more effective in reducing users’ mental fatigue. This suggests that background music can provide a practical solution for long-duration SSVEP-based BCI implementation.

Abstract Background Empathy is pivotal to effective clinical care. Yet, the art of nurturing and assessing empathy in medical schools is rarely consistent and poorly studied. To inform future design of programs aimed at nurturing empathy in medical students and doctors, a review is proposed. Methods This systematic scoping review (SSR) employs a novel approach called the Systematic Evidence Based Approach (SEBA) to enhance the reproducibility and transparency of the process. This 6-stage SSR in SEBA involved three teams of independent researchers who reviewed eight bibliographic and grey literature databases and performed concurrent thematic and content analysis to evaluate the data. Results In total, 24429 abstracts were identified, 1188 reviewed, and 136 included for analysis. Thematic and content analysis revealed five similar themes/categories. These comprised the 1) definition of empathy, 2) approaches to nurturing empathy, 3) methods to assessing empathy, 4) outcome measures, and 5) enablers/barriers to a successful curriculum. Conclusions Nurturing empathy in medicine occurs in stages, thus underlining the need for it to be integrated into a formal program built around a spiralled curriculum. We forward a framework built upon these stages and focus attention on effective assessments at each stage of the program. Tellingly, there is also a clear need to consider the link between nurturing empathy and one’s professional identity formation. This foregrounds the need for more effective tools to assess empathy and to better understand their role in longitudinal and portfolio based learning programs.

Abstract Background Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is more commonly associated with young patients, featuring high histological grade, visceral metastasis, and distant recurrence. Follistatin (FST) is a secreted extracellular regulatory protein that antagonizes TGF-β superfamily such as activin and TGF-β related superfamily such as bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). The implication of FST in the proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis of solid tumors documents good or poor outcome of patients with BC. However, the role of FST in TNBC remains unclear. Methods Data of 935 patients with breast cancer (BC) were extracted from TCGA. Case–control study, Kaplan–Meier, uni-multivariate COX, and ROC curve were utilized to investigate the relationship between FST expression and the clinical characteristics and prognosis of BC. Functional studies were used to analyze the effect of FST expression on proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion of TNBC cell lines. Bioinformatic methods such as volcanoplot, GO annd KEGG enrichment, and protein–protein interactions (PPI) analyses were conducted to further confirm the different roles of FST in the apoptotic pathways among mesenchymal and mesenchymal stem-like cells of TNBC. Results Data from TCGA showed that low FST expression correlated with poor prognosis (for univariate analysis, HR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.27–0.82, p = 0.008; for multivariate analysis, HR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.21–0.75, p = 0.004). Low FST expression provided high predicted value of poor prognosis in TNBC amongst BCs. FST knockdown promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of BT549 and HS578T cell lines. FST inhibited the apoptosis of mesenchymal cells by targeting BMP7. Conclusions Low FST expression is associated with poor prognosis of patients with TNBC. FST expressions exhibit the anisotropic roles of apoptosis between mesenchymal and mesenchymal stem-like cells but promote the proliferation, migration, invasion in both of two subtypes of TNBC in vitro. FST may be a subtype-heterogeneous biomarker for monitoring the progress of TNBC.

PurposeTo study the changes in functional connections between the left and right hemispheres of patients with high myopia (HM) and healthy controls (HCs) by resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC). To study the changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the left and right hemispheres of patients with HM and healthy controls (HCS) at rest by using resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on voxel-mirror homotopy connectivity (VMHC).Patients and MethodsA total of 89 patients with HM (41 men and 48 women) and 59 HCs (24 men and 35 women) were collected and matched according to gender, age, and education level. The VMHC method was used to evaluate the changes in rsFC between cerebral hemispheres, and a correlation analysis was carried out to understand the differences in brain functional activities between the patients with HM and the HCs.ResultsCompared with the HCs, the VMHC values of the putamen and fusiform in the HM group were significantly lower (voxel-level p < 0.01, Gaussian random field correction cluster level p < 0.05).ConclusionThis study preliminarily confirmed the destruction of interhemispheric functional connection in some brain regions of the patients with HM and provided effective information for clarifying the neural mechanism of patients with HM.

Locomotion is a fundamental movement in vertebrates produced by spinal networks known as central pattern generators (CPG). During fictive locomotion cat lumbar motoneurons (MNs) exhibit changes in membrane properties, including hyperpolarization of voltage threshold, reduction of afterhyperpolarization and input resistance, and amplification of nonlinear membrane properties. Both modeling and electrophysiological studies suggest that these changes can be produced by upregulating voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC), persistent sodium (NaP), or L-type calcium channel (LTCC) or downregulating delayed-rectifier potassium (K(DR)) or calcium-dependent potassium channel (KCa) in spinal MNs. Further studies implicate that these channel modulations increase motor output and facilitate MN recruitment. However, it remains unknown how the channel modulation of CPG networks or MN pools affects the rhythmic generation of locomotion and force production of skeletal muscle during locomotion. In order to investigate this issue, we built a two-level CPG model composed of excitatory interneuron pools (Exc-INs), coupled reciprocally with inhibitory interneuron pools (Inh-INs), and projected to the flexor-extensor MN pools innervating skeletal muscles. Each pool consisted of 100 neurons with membrane properties based on cat spinal neurons. VGSC, K(DR), NaP, KCa, LTCC, and H-current channels were included in the model. Simulation results showed that (1) upregulating VGSC, NaP, or LTCC or downregulating KCa in MNs increased discharge rate and recruitment of MNs, thus facilitating locomotor pattern formation, increased amplitude of electroneurogram (ENG) bursting, and enhanced force generation of skeletal muscles. (2) The same channel modulation in Exc-INs increased the firing frequency of the Exc-INs, facilitated rhythmic generation, and increased flexor-extensor durations of step cycles. (3) Contrarily, downregulation of NaP or LTCC in MNs or Exc-INs or both CPG (Exc-INs and Inh-INs) and MNs disrupted locomotor pattern and reduced or even blocked the ENG bursting of MNs and force generation of skeletal muscles. (4) Pharmacological experiments showed that bath application of 25 μM nimodipine or 2 μM riluzole completely blocked fictive locomotion in isolated rat spinal cord, consistent with simulation results. We concluded that upregulation of VGSC, NaP, or LTCC or downregulation of KCa facilitated rhythmic generation and force production during walking, with NaP and LTCC playing an essential role.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the fifth most common cancer worldwide, poses a severe threat to public health. Intraoperative fluorescence imaging provides a golden opportunity for surgeons to visualize tumor-involved margins, thereby implementing precise HCC resection with minimal damage to normal tissues. Here, a novel-acting contrast agent, which facilely bridges indocyanine green (ICG) and lipiodol using self-emulsifying nanotechnology, was developed for optical surgical navigation. Compared to clinically available ICG probe, our prepared nanoemulsion showed obviously red-shifted optical absorption and enhanced fluorescence intensity. Further benefiting from the shielding effect of lipiodol, the fluorescence stability and anti-photobleaching ability of nanoemulsion were highly improved, indicating a great capacity for long-lasting in vivo intraoperative imaging. Under the fluorescence guidance of nanoemulsion, the tumor tissues were clearly delineated with a signal-to-noise ratio above 5-fold, and then underwent a complete surgical resection from orthotopic HCC-bearing mice. Such superior fluorescence performances, ultrahigh tumor-to-liver contrast, as well as great bio-safety, warrants the great translational potential of nanoemulsion in precise HCC imaging and intraoperative navigation.

BackgroundProphylactic granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown to effectively prevent febrile neutropenia (FN) and grade 3/4 neutropenia during myelosuppressive treatment. The present study reports the clinical efficacy and safety of the prophylactic use of G-CSF with a half dose for cancer patients with an intermediate risk of FN combined with ≥1 patient-specific risk during multiple chemotherapy.MethodsThis multicenter, one-arm, and open-label clinical study involved 151 patients [median age, 54 years old (range, 46.0–62.5); 38.4% female] with malignant tumors, including >20 different cancers. These patients underwent a total of 604 cycles of chemotherapy and received a half dose of PEG-rhG-CSF administration prior to each cycle.ResultsThe incidence rate of FN was 3.3% for this cohort during chemotherapy. Chemotherapy delay occurred in 6 (4.0%) patients for 12 (2.0%) cycles. Early termination of cancer treatment occurred in 14 (9.3%) patients. In this cohort, 23 (15.2%) patients required antibiotic use during courses of chemotherapy. A total of 28 (18.5%) patients experienced clear adverse effects during cancer treatment.ConclusionThe prophylactic PEG-rhG-CSF with a half dose can both efficaciously and safely prevent neutropenia for patients of diverse cancers with an intermediate risk of FN combined with ≥1 patient-specific risk during chemotherapy.

To explore whether and how 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) can relieve the toxicity to the liver-gut-microbiota axis caused by alpha-cypermethrin (α-CP), adult zebrafish were exposed to α-CP (1.0 µg L-1) with or without 5.0 mg L-1 ALA supplementation. In the present work, the calculated LC50 of α-CP+ALA was 1.15 μg L-1, increasing about 1.16-fold compared with that of α-CP group (0.99 μg L-1), which indicated that ALA can alleviate the toxicity of α-CP. ALA also alleviated the histopathological lesions in the liver and gut induced by α-CP. Transcriptome sequencing of the liver showed that ALA rescues the differential expression of genes involved in the oxidation-reduction, heme metabolism, and complement activation pathways associated with dysfunctions induced by α-CP, and these findings were verified by RT–qPCR analysis and detection of the activities of enzymes in the liver-gut axis. The gut microbiota 16S rRNA sequencing results showed that α-CP alone induced gut microbial dysbiosis, which was efficiently antagonized by ALA due to decreasing the relative abundances of Cetobacterium and 3 major pathogens, and increasing the relative abundances of beneficial genera. Taken together, the results indicate that ALA might be a promising candidate for attenuating the adverse effects caused by pesticide-induced environmental pollution.

Tomographic Gamma Scanning (TGS) is one of the most important non-destructive analyzed techniques for radioactive waste drums. By reconstructing the radioactivity distribution image, it can accurately realize the qualitative, quantitative, and positioning analysis of the radionuclides in the drum. However, the time consuming of the scanning is long and the reconstructed image is rough, which limits its good application in the practical assay of the waste drum. In this work, the total variational minimization (TVM) method was applied to improve the iterative process of the conventional algorithms of maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) and algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), then the MLEM-TVM and ART-TVM reconstruction methods were developed. The transmitted experiments were carried out where four kinds of materials were arranged in a segment whose densities ranging from 1.04 g/cm3 to 2.02 g/cm3 and a 152Eu isotope was set up as a transmission source. Compared with the traditional algorithms MLEM and ART, the MLEM-TVM and the ART-TVM algorithms have a better performance on the accuracy and the signal-to-noise ratio, and the MLEM-TVM algorithm achieves the best results, which means the quality of the reconstructed image is improved. The accuracy and effectiveness of the TVM method used in the TGS image reconstruction are verified in the work, and moreover, it can save the scanning time and enhance the TGS image resolution through sparse projection sampling.

The steam reforming of methane (SRM) reaction is a significant process for efficient syngas generation and for promising distributed hydrogen production. In this work, a series of LaNiO3 oxides were prepared using the Pechini method, calcined from 600 °C to 900 °C and tested for the SRM reaction. Fresh, reduced, and used samples were characterized using STA-MS-FTIR, in situ and ex situ XRD, N2 physical adsorption, H2-TPR, TEM, TPO, and Raman. The results show that LaNiO3 begins to crystallize at about 550 °C, and the increase in calcination temperature results in the following differences in the properties of the LaNiO3 samples: larger LaNiO3 grains, smaller specific surface area, higher reduction temperature, smaller Ni0 grains reduced from the bulk phase, and stronger metal–support interaction. The maximum CH4 conversion could be achieved over LaNiO3 calcinated at 800 °C. In addition, the effect of steam-to-carbon ratio (S/C) on the performance of the SRM reaction was studied, and a S/C of 1.5 was found to be optimal for CH4 conversion. Too strong a metal–support interaction and too much unreacted steam causes a loss of catalytic activity. Finally, it was also proved using TPO and Raman that an increase in calcination temperature improves the carbon deposition resistance of the catalyst.

It is well known that the structure of bulk metallic glass has a close relationship with that of its crystalline eutectic phase, but how this is manifested on the atomic scale is not yet clear. The present paper further develops and optimizes dual-cluster formulas model to describe the eutectic and bulk metallic glass, as C _1 [(principal cluster) _1 (glue atom) _1 or 3 ] + C _2 [(principal cluster) _2 (glue atom) _1 or 3 ]. C _1 , C _2 are the proportions governed by the lever law, and the two principal clusters which have the highest atomic close-packing efficiency and large degree of isolation are derived from the eutectic-related phases. Cu-Zr binary system are studied using this model and the results match well with the experiments. According to dual-cluster formulas and valence electrons, the correlation between deep eutectic and bulk metallic glass may be disclosed, and a detailed step towards composition design of bulk metallic glass is established as well.

With the continuous application of spatial dependent data in various fields, spatial econometric models have attracted more and more attention. In this paper, a robust variable selection method based on exponential squared loss and adaptive lasso is proposed for the spatial Durbin model. Under mild conditions, we establish the asymptotic and “Oracle” properties of the proposed estimator. However, in model solving, nonconvex and nondifferentiable programming problems bring challenges to solving algorithms. To solve this problem effectively, we design a BCD algorithm and give a DC decomposition of the exponential squared loss. Numerical simulation results show that the method is more robust and accurate than existing variable selection methods when noise is present. In addition, we also apply the model to the 1978 housing price dataset in the Baltimore area.

The bibliometric analysis investigated the impact of publications on trends in the literature and bioenergy research using artificial intelligence (AI) from 1991 to 2021. In this study, 1721 publications were extracted from the Web of Science, and an analysis of the countries, authorship, institutions, journals, and keywords was visualised. In the recent decades, this field has entered an outbreak phase. India was the most productive country in this area, followed by China, Iran, and the US. It also noted several notable differences between trends and subjects in developed and developing countries. The former led this field at the initial stage and later attached importance to using AI for research feedstock and impact assessment. Developing countries encouraged the advancement of this area and emphasised the feedstock usage of phase treatment and process optimisation. In addition, a co-authorship and institutes study revealed that authors and institutes in distant regions rarely collaborated. The journal analysis shows strong links between Energy, Fuel, and Energy Conversion and Management. Machine learning is by far the most common application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in bioenergy research, with 53% of the articles using it. In these AI-related publications, the keyword artificial neural network (ANN) appeared most frequently in the articles.

The encouraging effects of HER2-ADC in patients with HER2-low expression cancers indicated the classical classifications based on positive and negative HER2 might no longer be suitable. However, the biology and prognosis of colorectal cancer patients with different HER2 expression status were still not clear. This is a multi-center retrospective study that included patients with histologically confirmed colorectal cancer and determined HER2 status who received radical surgical resection. HER2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) 1+ and IHC 2+ groups were combined and defined as a HER2-low group because of the concordance of clinicopathological characteristics. As compared with the HER2-high group, both the HER2-zero and the HER2-low group had less tumor with perineural invasion (14.3%, 13.1% vs. 31.6%, p = 0.001 and p < 0.001), less stage III disease (41.8%, 39.9% vs. 56.1%, p = 0.044 and p = 0.022), more RAS/BRAF mutation (52.1%, 49.9% vs. 19.5%, p < 0.001 and p < 0.001) and better disease-free survival (DFS) (3y-DFS rate of 78.7%, 82.4% vs. 59.3%, p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis and propensity score matching also revealed that HER2-high expression was an independent prognostic factor of DFS. In conclusion, our study revealed that HER2-low colorectal cancer tumors are close to HER2-zero tumors, but different from HER2-high tumors. The routine examination of HER2 IHC is needed in early-stage colorectal cancer.

Ethylene is mainly produced by steam cracking of naphtha or light alkanes in the current petrochemical industry. However, the high-temperature operation results in high energy demands, high cost of gas separation, and huge CO2 emissions. With the growth of the verified shale gas reserves, oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) becomes a promising process to convert ethane from underutilized shale gas reserves to ethylene at a moderate reaction temperature. Among the catalysts for ODHE, MoVNbTeOx mixed oxide has exhibited superior catalytic performance in terms of ethane conversion, ethylene selectivity, and/or yield. Accordingly, the process design is compact, and the economic evaluation is more favorable in comparison to the mature steam cracking processes. This paper aims to provide a state-of-the-art review on the application of MoVNbTeOx catalysts in the ODHE process, involving the origin of MoVNbTeOx, (post-) treatment of the catalyst, material characterization, reaction mechanism, and evaluation as well as the reactor design, providing a comprehensive overview of M1 MoVNbTeOx catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane, thus contributing to the understanding and development of the ODHE process based on MoVNbTeOx catalysts.

Abstract Background Corticoid therapy has been recommended in the treatment of critically ill patients with COVID-19, yet its efficacy is currently still under evaluation. We investigated the effect of corticosteroid treatment on 90-day mortality and SARS-CoV-2 RNA clearance in severe patients with COVID-19. Methods 294 critically ill patients with COVID-19 were recruited between December 30, 2019 and February 19, 2020. Logistic regression, Cox proportional-hazards model and marginal structural modeling (MSM) were applied to evaluate the associations between corticosteroid use and corresponding outcome variables. Results Out of the 294 critically ill patients affected by COVID-19, 183 (62.2%) received corticosteroids, with methylprednisolone as the most frequently administered corticosteroid (175 accounting for 96%). Of those treated with corticosteroids, 69.4% received corticosteroid prior to ICU admission. When adjustments and subgroup analysis were not performed, no significant associations between corticosteroids use and 90-day mortality or SARS-CoV-2 RNA clearance were found. However, when stratified analysis based on corticosteroid initiation time was performed, there was a significant correlation between corticosteroid use (≤ 3 day after ICU admission) and 90-day mortality (logistic regression adjusted for baseline: OR 4.49, 95% CI 1.17–17.25, p = 0.025; Cox adjusted for baseline and time varying variables: HR 3.89, 95% CI 1.94–7.82, p

The oomycete Phytopythium vexans is a causative agent of patch canker, damping-off, and crown, stem, and root rot in many economically important plants. P. vexans HF1 was isolated in China, where it caused brown root rot of ramie, a fiber crop broadly cultivated in Asia. The genome of HF1 was sequenced by a combination of technologies producing short (Illumina HiSeq X) and long (PacBio RS) reads. The genome is 41.73 Mbp long, assembled into 44 contigs. It has a GC content of 58.17% and contains 13,051 predicted coding genes, including 1,461 putative virulence genes and 220 putative antimicrobial resistance genes. This genome sequence provides a resource for determining the molecular mechanisms of disease development in this pathosystem.

Background: Disorders of mitochondrial carnitine–acylcarnitine cycle is a heterogeneous group of hereditary diseases of mitochondrial β-oxidation of fatty acids tested in NBS program in Zhejiang province, China. Large-scale studies reporting disorders of mitochondrial carnitine–acylcarnitine cycle among Chinese population in NBS are limited. The aim of this study was to explain the incidence and biochemical, clinical, and genetic characteristics of disorders of mitochondrial carnitine–acylcarnitine cycle in NBS.Methods: From January 2009 to June 2021, 4,070,375 newborns were screened by tandem mass spectrometry. Newborns with elevated C0 levels and/or C0/(C16 + C18) ratios were identified as having CPT1D, whereas those with decreased C0 levels and/or C0/(C16 + C18) ratios and/or elevated C12-C18:1 level were identified as having CPT2D or CACTD. Suspected positive patients were further subjected to genetic analysis. All confirmed patients received biochemical and nutritional treatment, as well as follow-up sessions.Results: Overall, 20 patients (12 with CPT1D, 4 with CPT2D, and 4 with CACTD) with disorders of mitochondrial carnitine–acylcarnitine cycle were diagnosed by NBS. The overall incidence of these disorders was one in 203,518 newborns. In toal, 11 patients with CPT1D exhibited increased C0 levels and C0/(C16 + C18) ratios. In all patients of CPT2D, all long chain acyl-carnitines levels were elevated except for case 14 having normal C12 levels. In all patients with CACTD, all long chain acyl-carnitines levels were elevated except for case 17 having normal C12, C18, and C18:1 levels. Most patients with CPT1D were asymptomatic. Overall, two of 4 patients with CPT2D did not present any clinical symptom, but other two patients died. In 4 cases with CACTD, the disease was onset after birth, and 75% patients died. In total, 14 distinct mutations were identified in CPT1A gene, of which 11 were novel and c.1910C > A (p.S637T), c.740C > T (p.P247L), and c.1328T > C (p.L443P) were the most common mutations. Overall, 3 novel mutations were identified in CPT2 gene, and the most frequent mutation was c.1711C > A (p.P571T). The most common variant in SLC25A20 gene was c.199-10T > G.Conclusion: Disorders of mitochondrial carnitine–acylcarnitine cycle can be detected by NBS, and the combined incidence of these disorders in newborns was rare in Zhejiang province, China. Most patients presented typical acylcarnitine profiles. Most patients with CPT1D presented normal growth and development, whereas those with CPT2D/CACTD exhibited a high mortality rate. Several novel CPT1A and CPT2 variants were identified, which expanded the variant spectrum.

Background and AimThe identification of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) is a key element interfering with therapeutic response, but it is often difficult for less experienced endoscopists to identify UC and CD. Therefore, we aimed to develop and validate a deep learning diagnostic system trained on a large number of colonoscopy images to distinguish UC and CD.MethodsThis multicenter, diagnostic study was performed in 5 hospitals in China. Normal individuals and active patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) were enrolled. A dataset of 1,772 participants with 49,154 colonoscopy images was obtained between January 2018 and November 2020. We developed a deep learning model based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) in the examination. To generalize the applicability of the deep learning model in clinical practice, we compared the deep model with 10 endoscopists and applied it in 3 hospitals across China.ResultsThe identification accuracy obtained by the deep model was superior to that of experienced endoscopists per patient (deep model vs. trainee endoscopist, 99.1% vs. 78.0%; deep model vs. competent endoscopist, 99.1% vs. 92.2%, P < 0.001) and per lesion (deep model vs. trainee endoscopist, 90.4% vs. 59.7%; deep model vs. competent endoscopist 90.4% vs. 69.9%, P < 0.001). In addition, the mean reading time was reduced by the deep model (deep model vs. endoscopists, 6.20 s vs. 2,425.00 s, P < 0.001).ConclusionWe developed a deep model to assist with the clinical diagnosis of IBD. This provides a diagnostic device for medical education and clinicians to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract Porous particles have found widespread applications in therapeutic diagnosis, drug delivery, and tissue engineering due to their typical properties of large surface area, extensive loading capacity, and hierarchical microstructures. Attempts in this aspect are focusing on the development of effective methods to generate functional porous particles. Herein, a simple droplet microfluidics for continuously and directly generating porous particles by introducing bubble‐propelled nanomotors into the system is presented. As the nanomotors can continuously generate gas bubbles in the unsolidified droplet templates, the desirable porous microparticles can be obtained after droplet polymerization. It is demonstrated that the generation process is highly controlled and the resultant microparticles show excellent porosity and monodispersity. In addition, the obtained porous microparticles can serve as microcarriers for 3D cell culture, because of their characteristic porous structures and favorable biocompatibility. Moreover, owing to the existence of oxygen in these microparticles, they can be used to improve the healing effects of wounds in the type I diabetes rat models. These remarkable features of the generation strategy and the porous microparticles point to their potential values in various biomedical fields.

Growing evidence suggests that adverse intrauterine environments could affect the long-term health of offspring. Recent evidence indicates that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with neurocognitive changes in offspring. However, the mechanism remains unclear. Using a GDM mouse model, we collected hippocampi, the structure critical to cognitive processes, for electron microscopy, methylome and transcriptome analyses. Reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) and RNA-seq in the GDM fetal hippocampi showed altered methylated modification and differentially expressed genes enriched in common pathways involved in neural synapse organization and signal transmission. We further collected fetal mice brains for metabolome analysis and found that in GDM fetal brains, the metabolites displayed significant changes, in addition to directly inducing cognitive dysfunction, some of which are important to methylation status such as betaine, fumaric acid, L-methionine, succinic acid, 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). These results suggest that GDM affects metabolites in fetal mice brains and further affects hippocampal DNA methylation and gene regulation involved in cognition, which is a potential mechanism for the adverse neurocognitive effects of GDM in offspring.

Abstract Graphene films, fabricated by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, have exhibited superiorities in high crystallinity, thickness controllability, and large‐scale uniformity. However, most synthesized graphene films are substrate‐dependent, and usually fragile for practical application. Herein, a freestanding graphene film is prepared based on the CVD route. By using the etchable fabric substrate, a large‐scale papyraceous freestanding graphene fabric film (FS‐GFF) is obtained. The electrical conductivity of FS‐GFF can be modulated from 50 to 2800 Ω sq−1 by tailoring the graphene layer thickness. Moreover, the FS‐GFF can be further attached to various shaped objects by a simple rewetting manipulation with negligible changes of electric conductivity. Based on the advanced fabric structure, excellent electrical property, and high infrared emissivity, the FS‐GFF is thus assembled into a flexible device with tunable infrared emissivity, which can achieve the adaptive camouflage ability in complicated backgrounds. This work provides an infusive insight into the fabrication of large‐scale freestanding graphene fabric films, while promoting the exploration on the flexible infrared camouflage textiles.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder of unknown etiology. IBS is caused by a disruption in the gut-brain axis. Given the importance of the gut microbiota in maintaining local and systemic homeostasis of immunity, endocrine, and other physiological processes, the microbiota-gut-brain axis has been proposed as a key regulator in IBS. Neurotransmitters have been shown to affect blood flow regulation, intestinal motility, nutrient absorption, the gastrointestinal immune system, and the microbiota in recent studies. It has the potential role to play a function in the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal and neurological systems. Transmitters and their receptors, including 5-hydroxytryptamine, dopamine, γ-aminobutyric acid, and histamine, play an important role in IBS, especially in visceral sensitivity and gastrointestinal motility. Studies in this field have shed light on revealing the mechanism by which neurotransmitters act in the pathogenesis of IBS and discovering new therapeutic strategies based on traditional pharmacological approaches that target the nervous system or novel therapies that target the microbiota.

Residential coal combustion (RCC) emission exhibited obvious daily variation, while no real-time estimation of air pollutants from RCC has been reported, as the shortages of corresponding activity dataset and emission factors with high time resolution. A real-time monitoring platform for RCC emission was established. Hourly emission factors of 18 typed of TEs from eleven kinds of chunk coals and nine kinds of honeycomb coals burning in China were obtained. The monthly and hourly coal consumption amounts were calculated with reference and our field survey. Then the hourly TEs emission inventories from RCC were established in China. GEOS-Chem and Risk Quotients Models were utilized to map the spatialized health risks of hazardous elements, including the gridded hazard index and carcinogenic risk. The result indicated that the EFs of TEs would be underestimated if the tests only consider flaming conditions. Cu, K, Ca, Zn, and Co were the top five elements from RCC, with corresponding emission amounts as 1397.7, 1054.0, 676.0, 623.5 and 420 tons in 2017, respectively. K, Ti, Fe, Sn, and Sb showed hourly peak values under flaming dominated periods, accounting for 48.2%, 45.9%, 31.8%, 42.8%, and 33.8% of their daily emissions. Other elements (e.g., V, Co, As, Hg and Pb) exhibited higher emissions under smoldering dominated period in nighttime, accounting for 22.2%, 32.9%, 27.6%, 34.7%, and 28.4% of their daily emissions. TEs emission from RCC closely follows the habits of human daily cooking and heating activity. The national HI were lower than the acceptable level (HI ≤ 1) except Sichuan Province (up to 1.2). Higher carcinogenic risks (≥1 × 10-6) occurred in parts of Sichuan, Shanxi, Hunan and Hubei, which were up to 2.0 × 10-5. The high-resolution TEs emission inventories could be useful for future modeling works on the formation and evolution of air pollution and are helpful for human exposure assessment.

The mixing process between miscible fluids in a splitting-and-recombination microreactor is analyzed numerically by solving the Navier–Stokes equation and species transfer equation. The commercial microreactor combines rectangular channels with comb-shaped inserts to achieve the splitting-and-recombination effect. The results show that the microreactor with three-layer standard inserts have the highest mixing rate as well as good mixing efficiency within a wide range of Reynolds numbers from 0.1 to 160. The size parameters of the inserts, both the ratio of the width of comb tooth (marked as l) and the spacing distance (marked as s) between two comb teeth, and the ratio of the vertical distance (marked as V) of comb teeth and the horizontal distance (marked as H) are essential for influencing the liquid–liquid mixing process at low Reynolds numbers (e.g., Re ≤ 2). With the increase of s/l from 1 to 4, the mixing efficiency drops from 0.99 to 0.45 at Re = 0.2. Similarly, the increase in V/H is not beneficial to promote the mixing between fluids. When the ratio of V/H changes from 10:10 to 10:4, the splitting and recombination cycles reduce so that the uniform mixing between different fluids can be hardly achieved. The width of comb tooth (marked as l) is 1 mm and the spacing distance (marked as s) between two comb teeth is 2 mm. The vertical distance (marked as V) of comb teeth and the horizontal distance (marked as H) are both 10 mm.

Wind power prediction reduces the uncertainty of an entire energy system, which is very important for balancing energy supply and demand. To improve the prediction accuracy, an average wind power prediction method based on a convolutional neural network and a model named Informer is proposed. The original data features comprise only one time scale, which has a minimal amount of time information and trends. A 2-D convolutional neural network was employed to extract additional time features and trend information. To improve the accuracy of long sequence input prediction, Informer is applied to predict the average wind power. The proposed model was trained and tested based on a dataset of a real wind farm in a region of China. The evaluation metrics included MAE, MSE, RMSE, and MAPE. Many experimental results show that the proposed methods achieve good performance and effectively improve the average wind power prediction accuracy.

The flow of high-level talents in China is becoming more and more active and has a profound impact on the innovation and development of cities. Based on the research on the spatial distribution of the school and work stages of high-level talent in China, we study the structure and evolution of China’s high-level talent mobility network by using the data on the flow trajectory of talent among cities in China. The results show that: (1) the spatial distribution of talents in the two stages has greater consistency, but there is a change characteristic of “large dispersion, small agglomeration.” (2) Compared with the school stage, the network in the work stage has much more connections; the centrality gap of cities has narrowed. (3) “Core-periphery” structure of two networks is relatively significant and similar. The core layer in the two networks has not changed, but the subcore layer and the subedge layer have undergone changes. In addition, talents mainly flow to core and subcore cities. (4) The space structure of network is more complex in the work stage, and it is expanding to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in southeastern China.

A light-switchable transgene system called LightOn gene expression system could regulate gene expression with a high on/off ratio under blue light, and have great potential for spatiotemporally controllable gene expression. We developed a nanoparticle drug delivery system (NDDS) to achieve tumor microenvironment-responsive and targeted delivery of diphtheria toxin A (DTA) fragment-encoded plasmids to tumor sites. The expression of DTA was induced by exposure to blue light. Nanoparticles composed of polyethylenimine and vitamin E succinate linked by a disulfide bond, and PEGylated hyaluronic acid modified with RGD peptide, accumulated in tumor tissues and were actively internalized into 4T1 cells via dual targeting to CD44 and αvβ3 receptors. The LightOn gene expression system was able to control target protein expression through regulation of the intensity or duration of blue light exposure. In vitro studies showed that light-induced DTA expression reduced 4T1 cell viability and induced apoptosis. Furthermore, the LightOn gene expression system enabled spatiotemporal control of the expression of DTA in a mouse 4T1 tumor xenograft model, which resulted in excellent antitumor effects, reduced tumor angiogenesis, and no systemic toxicity. The combination of the LightOn gene expression system and NDDS may be an effective strategy for treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is becoming increasingly prevalent of late. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) has a significant role in folate metabolism. Owing to the inconsistencies and inconclusiveness on the association between MTHFR single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and ASD susceptibilities, a meta-analysis was conducted to settle the inconsistencies. Methods For this meta-analysis, a total of 15 manuscripts published up to January 26, 2020, were selected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, WangFang, and CNKI databases using search terms “MTHFR” OR “methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase” AND “ASD” OR “Autism Spectrum Disorders” OR “Autism” AND “polymorphism” OR “susceptibility” OR “C677T” OR “A1298C”. Results The findings of the meta-analysis indicated that MTHFR C677T polymorphism is remarkably associated with ASD in the five genetic models, viz., allelic, dominant, recessive, heterozygote, and homozygote. However, the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism was not found to be significantly related to ASD in the five genetic models. Subgroup analyses revealed significant associations of ASD with the MTHFR (C677T and A1298C) polymorphism. Sensitivity analysis showed that this meta-analysis was stable and reliable. No publication bias was identified in the associations between MTHFRC677T polymorphisms and ASD in the five genetic models, except for the one with regard to the associations between MTHFRA1298C polymorphisms and ASD in the five genetic models. Conclusion This meta-analysis showed that MTHFR C677T polymorphism is a susceptibility factor for ASD, and MTHFR A1298C polymorphism is not associated with ASD susceptibility.

Abstracts Background Ultrasound is a useful tool to evaluate and quantify skin lesions. Few studies have assessed the criterion validity of skin ultrasound in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aims of the study were to investigate skin thickness and stiffness using ultrasound and shear wave elastography (SWE) in SSc and to validate skin ultrasound measurements against histological skin thickness. Methods A total of 22 patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), 22 with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc), and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Skin thickness and stiffness were measured by B-mode ultrasound with SWE imaging on the bilateral fingers and hands. Additional ultrasound evaluation was carried out in 13 patients (9 dcSSc and 4 lcSSc) on their dorsal forearms, followed by skin biopsy conducted in the same skin areas.
