Abstract

The paper concerns teaching literary translation as a type of cross-cultural speech act in the system of translators’ professional training and integrated into the course of “Home Reading”.The authors believe that all disciplines that comprise translators’ professional training should be profession-oriented, equipping the students with skills and competences necessary for effective cross-cultural mediation, thus contributing to the formation of a cross-cultural component of the translator’s competence. A hierarchy of tasks and assignments is presented in accordance with the three-stage structure of the translation process (pre-translation, translation, and post-translation stages).The results and efficiency of the proposed method, tested in the course of a 17-years long experimental teaching, is described.

Abstract

Summary Background Etrolizumab is a gut-targeted anti-β7 integrin monoclonal antibody. In an earlier phase 2 induction study, etrolizumab significantly improved clinical remission relative to placebo in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. The HIBISCUS studies aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of etrolizumab to adalimumab and placebo for induction of remission in patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. Methods HIBISCUS I and HIBISCUS II were identically designed, multicentre, phase 3, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled and active-controlled studies of etrolizumab, adalimumab, and placebo in adult (18–80 years) patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (Mayo Clinic total score [MCS] of 6–12 with an endoscopic subscore of ≥2, a rectal bleeding subscore of ≥1, and a stool frequency subscore of ≥1) who were naive to tumour necrosis factor inhibitors. All patients had an established diagnosis of ulcerative colitis for at least 3 months, corroborated by both clinical and endoscopic evidence, and evidence of disease extending at least 20 cm from the anal verge. In both studies, patients were randomly assigned (2:2:1) to receive subcutaneous etrolizumab 105 mg once every 4 weeks; subcutaneous adalimumab 160 mg on day 1, 80 mg at week 2, and 40 mg at weeks 4, 6, and 8; or placebo. Randomisation was stratified by baseline concomitant treatment with corticosteroids, concomitant treatment with immunosuppressants, and baseline disease activity. All patients and study site personnel were masked to treatment assignment. The primary endpoint was induction of remission at week 10 (defined as MCS of 2 or lower, with individual subscores of 1 or lower, and rectal bleeding subscore of 0) with etrolizumab compared with placebo. Pooled analyses of both studies comparing etrolizumab and adalimumab were examined for several clinical and endoscopic endpoints. Efficacy was analysed using a modified intent-to-treat population, defined as all randomly assigned patients who received at least one dose of study drug. These trials are registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , NCT02163759 (HIBISCUS I), NCT02171429 (HIBISCUS II). Findings Between Nov 4, 2014, and May 25, 2020, each study screened 652 patients (HIBISCUS I) and 613 patients (HIBISCUS II). Each study enrolled and randomly assigned 358 patients (HIBISCUS I etrolizumab n=144, adalimumab n=142, placebo n=72; HIBISCUS II etrolizumab n=143; adalimumab n=143; placebo n=72). In HIBISCUS I, 28 (19·4%) of 144 patients in the etrolizumab group and five (6·9%) of 72 patients in the placebo group were in remission at week 10, with an adjusted treatment difference of 12·3% (95% CI 1·6 to 20·6; p=0·017) in favour of etrolizumab. In HIBISCUS II, 26 (18·2%) of 143 patients in the etrolizumab group and eight (11·1%) of 72 patients in the placebo group were in remission at week 10, with an adjusted treatment difference of 7·2% (95% CI –3·8 to 16·1; p=0·17). In the pooled analysis, etrolizumab was not superior to adalimumab for induction of remission, endoscopic improvement, clinical response, histological remission, or endoscopic remission; however, similar numerical results were observed in both groups. In HIBISCUS I, 50 (35%) of 144 patients in the etrolizumab group reported any adverse event, compared with 61 (43%) of 142 in the adalimumab group and 26 (36%) of 72 in the placebo group. In HIBISCUS II, 63 (44%) of 143 patients in the etrolizumab group reported any adverse event, as did 62 (43%) of 143 in the adalimumab group and 33 (46%) in the placebo group. The most common adverse event in all groups was ulcerative colitis flare. The incidence of serious adverse events in the pooled patient population was similar for etrolizumab (15 [5%] of 287) and placebo (seven [5%] of 144) and lower for adalimumab (six [2%] of 285). Two patients in the etrolizumab group died; neither death was deemed to be treatment related. Interpretation Etrolizumab was superior to placebo for induction of remission in HIBISCUS I, but not in HIBISCUS II. Etrolizumab was well tolerated in both studies. Funding F Hoffmann-La Roche.

Abstract

In recent years, considerable breakthroughs have been achieved in the explored photodetectors with improved performance and stability. However, such devices suffer from the drifting parameters (photoresponsivity, response time, and specific detectivity) in the case of evident operating temperature changes. Here, a double perovskite Cs2NaBiCl6-based ultraviolet (UV) photodetector is developed free from thermal disturbance, exhibiting a steady photoresponsivity (≈ 67.98 mA/W) and response time (≈ 16.42 ms) within a wide temperature range (from 273 to 333 K). Further studies demonstrate that the stability of the crystal structure endows the superior photodetection capability. This result unambiguously highlights the great potential of such double perovskite Cs2NaBiCl6 compound as an environmentally friendly alternative for UV photodetectors.

Abstract

A yellow long persistent luminescence (LPL) phosphor of Sr3Ga4O9:Bi3+ were synthesized by a simple solid-state method. The luminescence properties have been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectra, LPL spectra, afterglow decay curves and thermoluminescence (TL) curves. A series of the excitation time and decay time dependent TL experiments have been conducted, and the trap characteristics of the phosphor were studied. The LPL can be detected more than 10 h, which is due to the fact that the feasible trap depth ensures the slow release of charge carriers. The results of LPL properties at variable temperature show that the phosphor has a broad application prospect in high-temperature environments.

Abstract

Less than half of people living with HIV (PLH) in Russia are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and only 27% are virally suppressed. Interventions to better engage PLH in medical care could reduce onward transmission and also improve health. A feasibility pilot test of an intervention to increase social capital to support HIV care engagement was carried out in St. Petersburg. Out-of-care or care-nonadherent PLH (n=24) attended a five-session group intervention to (1) help participants enter care, initiate ART, and adhere to ART and (2) identify and access social capital resources—such as family members, friends, and care providers—to mobilize their supports for HIV care. Participants were assessed at baseline, at followup immediately after intervention (FU-1), and again at 6-month followup (FU-2) with HIV viral load testing and measures of HIV care engagement, ART adherence, and social capital. At FU-1, participants reported talking more frequently and with a greater number of friends about HIV care experiences, verifying the intervention’s mechanism of action. Participants increased in scores on scales measuring medication-taking adherence (p=0.002 at FU-1 and p=0.011 at FU-2), HIV medication-taking self-efficacy (p=0.042 at FU-1), and HIV medication-taking outcome expectancies (at FU-2, p=0.016 among persons on ART and p=0.026 among those not on ART). HIV Medication Readiness scale scores increased at FU-1 (p=0.032) among persons not on ART, although some changes became attenuated over time. Participants tended to keep their care appointments more frequently (79% at baseline to 90% at FU-1; p=0.077); to have undetectable viral load (54% at baseline to 74% at FU-2; p=0.063); and to have fewer days in the past month with delayed or incomplete medication doses (from 7.8 at baseline to 4.2 at FU-1; p=0.084). This social capital intervention is novel and promising for improving HIV care-related outcomes, and warrants a full-scale evaluation.

Abstract

Scintillators, as the core materials for X‐ray imaging, have received great attention in radiation detection, security inspection, and biomedical applications. However, the current single crystal and thin film scintillators have encountered several issues, such as high cost, insufficient stability, and uneven distribution, which undoubtedly limit the development of high‐quality X‐ray imaging. Herein, the Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce3+) transparent ceramics (TCs), which presented a high transmittance of 82% and a steady‐state light yield of 24 600 photons MeV−1, are prepared by the vacuum solid‐state reactive sintering method. The fabricated YAG:Ce3+ TCs exhibit X‐ray imaging with an excellent spatial resolution (≈34.7 lp mm−1). Moreover, because of the structural stability of YAG:Ce3+ TCs, long‐term stable work under X‐ray irradiation is realized successfully. Abstract

Broadband near‐infrared (NIR) luminescent materials have received notable attention due to their distinct photophysical properties for designing NIR light‐emitting diodes (NIR LEDs). Here, a series of Ca3−xLuxGa2+xGe3−xO12:Cr3+ (CLGGG:Cr3+) (x = 0–1) NIR‐emitting garnet phosphors with an emission range of 660–1200 nm are successfully developed and their lattice parameters are structurally analyzed. Upon 460 nm blue light excitation, the NIR phosphors exhibit both a substantial spectral broadening (FWHM: 129→267 nm) and a redshift of 37 nm (766→803 nm) with cosubstitution of [Lu3+–Ga3+] pairs for [Ca2+–Ge4+] sites. Furthermore, their luminescence thermal stability is substantially improved, maintaining ≈90% of the original photoluminescence intensity at 150 °C, owing to shrinkage of the second coordination sphere and rigid lattice, which are strongly associated with Cr3+ trade‐off occupancy and local structure evolutions. The relation between the trade‐off site occupation of Cr3+ in GaO6/CaO8 polyhedrons and the NIR emission is also clarified by evaluating the decay and electron paramagnetic resonance behavior of Cr3+ at different sites. The broadband NIR phosphors investigated here can serve as auspicious luminescent converters for phosphor‐converted NIR LEDs and can provide an inspiring platform for future studies.
