The aims of the present study were to obtain the seafood dietary patterns of coastal residents, to determine the concentrations of heavy metals, and to evaluate the possible health risks caused by seafood intake. The daily food intakes of 24 types of seafood were collected from 738 participants from Xiamen, a southern Chinese coastal city, using food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and dietary history method. One hundred and fifty-six samples of 14 types of highest intake seafood were collected from local markets for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) determination. Health risks via seafood consumption were evaluated by calculating the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the total hazard index (HI) for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The results showed that the seafood daily intake of Xiamen residents was 61.5 (2.14, 115) g/day. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, and As in seafood were ND-0.45 mg/kg, ND-0.19 mg/kg, ND-0.80 mg/kg, ND-0.70 mg/kg, and 0.32-16.9 mg/kg, respectively. Concentrations of Cd and As in some samples were higher than national limitation standards. Consumption of 14 common types of seafood would not pose non-carcinogenic risk. However, some types, such as sparuslatus, oyster, and porphyra tenera, would form a carcinogenic risk. Regardless of a carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic risk, As posed the highest risk on humans. The observed HI value for non-carcinogenic effect of all metals in all seafood reached 0.69-2.20, and the metal orders of risk can be listed as As > Hg > Cr > Cd > Pb, reiterating the risk of As is a matter of concern in seafood from Xiamen markets. Corn-soybean rotation is a cropping pattern to optimize crop structure and improve resource use efficiency, and nitrogen (N) fertilizer application is an indispensable tool to increase corn yields. However, the effects of N fertilizer application levels on corn yield and soil N storage under corn-soybean rotation have not been systematically studied. The experimental located in the central part of the Songnen Plain, a split-zone experimental design was used with two planting patterns of continuous corn (CC) and corn-soybean rotations (RC) in the main zone and three N application rates of 0, 180, and 360 kg hm -2 of urea in the secondary zone. The research has shown that RC treatments can enhance plant growth and increase corn yield by 4.76% to 79.92% compared to CC treatments. The amount of N fertilizer applied has a negative correlation with yield increase range, and N application above 180 kg hm -2 has a significantly lower effect on corn yield increase. Therefore, a reduction in N fertilizer application may be appropriate. RC increased soil N storage by improving soil N-transforming enzyme activity, improving soil N content and the proportion of soil organic N fractions. Additionally, it can improve plant N use efficiency by 1.4%-5.6%. Soybeans grown in corn-soybean rotations systems have the potential to replace more than 180 kg hm -2 of urea application. Objectives: Evidence of childhood asthma hospitalizations associated with temperature variability (TV) and the attributable risk are limited in China. We aim to use a comprehensive index that reflected both intra- and inter-day TV to assess the TV-childhood asthma relationship and disease burden, further to identify seasonality vulnerable populations, and to explore the effect modification of PM 2.5 ., Methods: A quasi-distributed lagged nonlinear model (DLNM) combined with a linear threshold function was applied to estimate the association between TV and childhood asthma hospitalizations during 2013-2016 in Hefei, China. Subgroup analysis was conducted by age and sex. Disease burden is reflected by the attributable fraction and attributable number. Besides, modifications of PM 2.5 were tested by introducing the cross-basis of TV and binary PM 2.5 as an interaction term., Results: The risk estimates peaked at TV 0-3 and TV 0-4 in the cool and the warm season separately, with RR of 1.051 (95%CI: 1.021-1.081) and 1.072 (95%CI: 1.008-1.125), and the effects lasted longer in the cool season. The school-age children in the warm season and all subgroups except pre-school children in the cool season were vulnerable to TV. It is estimated that the disease burden related to TV account for 6.2% (95% CI: 2.7%-9.4%) and 4% (95% CI: 0.6%-7.1%) during the cool and warm seasons in TV 0-3 . In addition, the risks of TV were higher under the high PM 2.5 level compared with the low PM 2.5 level in the cool season, although no significant differences between them., Conclusions: TV exposure significantly increases the risk and disease burden of childhood asthma hospitalizations, especially in the cool season. More medical resources should be allocated to school-age children. Giving priority to pay attention to TV in the cool season in practice could obtain the greatest public health benefits and those days with high TV and high PM 2.5 need more attention., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Anther and ovule genesis preconditions crop fertilization and fruit production; however, coordinative regulation of anther and ovule development and underlying molecular pathways remain largely elusive. Here, we found that SPOROCYTELESS (SPL)/NOZZLE (NZZ) expression was nearly abolished in a Cucumis sativus (cucumber) mutant with severely defective anther and ovule development. CsSPL was expressed specifically in the developing anthers and ovules. Knock-down of CsSPL reduced male and female fertility with malformed pollen and suppressed ovule development. Importantly, CsSPL directly interacted with CsWUS (WUSCHEL) in the nucellus and YABBY family genes in integuments, and positively regulated CsWUS expression, meanwhile the HD-ZIP III gene CsPHB (PHABULOSA), expressed specifically in the nucellus, promoted CsSPL expression by binding to the CsSPL promoter. Thus, CsSPL acts as an adaptor to link CsPHB and CsWUS functioning, underpinning a previously unidentified regulatory pathway orchestrating sex organ development in planta. In addition, auxin accumulation was reduced in the reproductive organs of CsSPL knock-down plants. Biochemical analyses further showed that CsSPL stimulated the expression of AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 3 (CsARF3), and was positively regulated by CsARF13 during reproductive organ development, indicating sequential interactions of CsSPL with auxin signaling components in orchestrating anther and ovule development., (© 2018 The Authors The Plant Journal © 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Cucumber is one of the most important vegetables grown worldwide due to its important economic and nutritional value. The cucumber fruit consists morphologically of the undesirable stalk and the tasty fruit; however, physiological differentiation of these two parts and the underlying molecular basis remain largely unknown. Here we characterized the physiological differences among the pedicel, stalk and fruit, and compared the respective phloem transcriptomes using laser capture microdissection coupled with RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). We found that the pedicel was characterized by minor cell expansion and a high concentration of stachyose, the stalk showed rapid cell expansion and high raffinose accumulation, and the fruit featured transition from cell division to cell expansion and high levels of monosaccharides. Analyses of transcriptome data indicated that cell wall- and calcium ion binding-related genes contributed to the cell expansion in the pedicel and stalk, whereas genes implicated in cell cycle and hormone actions regulated the transition from cell division to cell expansion in the fruit. Differential sugar distribution in these three phloem-connected tissues resulted from tissue-specific sugar metabolism and transport. Enrichment of transcription factors in the stalk and fruit may facilitate nutrient accumulation in these sink organs. As such, phloem-located gene expression partially orchestrated physiological differentiation of the pedicel, stalk and fruit in cucumber.
