Van der Waals assembly enables exquisite design of electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) materials, often by superimposing a long-wavelength periodic potential on a crystal lattice using moir\'e superlattices. Here we show that electronic states in three-dimensional (3D) crystals such as graphite can also be tuned by the superlattice potential arising at the interface with another crystal, namely, crystallographically aligned hexagonal boron nitride. Such alignment is found to result in a multitude of Lifshitz transitions and Brown-Zak oscillations for near-surface 2D states whereas, in high magnetic fields, fractal states of Hofstadter's butterfly extend deep into graphite's bulk. Our work shows a venue to control 3D spectra by using the approach of 2D twistronics.

Gas accretion is an important process in the evolution of galaxies, but it has limited direct observational evidences. In this paper, we report the detection of a possible ongoing gas accretion event in a Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy, MaNGA 8313-1901, observed by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies and Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) program. This galaxy has a distinct off-centered blue clump to the northeast (the NE clump) that shows low metallicity and enhanced star-formation. The kinematics of the gas in the NE clump also seems to be detached from the host BCD galaxy. Together with the metallicity drop of the NE clump, it suggests that the NE clump likely has an external origin, such as the gas accretion or galaxy interaction, rather than an internal origin, such as an \hii~complex in the disk. After removing the underlying host component, we find that the spectrum of the "pure" clump can match very well with a modeled spectrum containing a stellar population of the young stars ($\le 7$ Myr) only. This may imply that the galaxy is experiencing an accretion of cold gas, instead of a merger event involving galaxies with significant pre-existing old stars. While it is well known that water availability controls vegetation growth and soil microbial activity, how aridity affects ecosystem carbon patterns is not completely understood. Towards a more quantitative assessment of terrestrial carbon stocks, here we uncover a remarkable self-similar behavior of the global carbon stock. Using international survey and remote sensing data, we find that the key statistics (e.g., mean, quantiles, and standard deviation) of carbon stock tend to scale with the hydrological regime (i.e., aridity) via a universal exponent. As a result, when normalized by its averages in the corresponding hydrological regime, the carbon stock distributions collapse onto a single curve. Such a scaling reflects the strong coupling between hydrological cycle and biogeochemical process and enables robust predictions of carbon stocks as a function of aridity only., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

We consider Hermitian random band matrices $H=(h_{xy})$ on the $d$-dimensional lattice $(\mathbb Z/L \mathbb Z)^d$, where the entries $h_{xy}=\overline h_{yx}$ are independent centered complex Gaussian random variables with variances $s_{xy}=\mathbb E|h_{xy}|^2$. The variance matrix $S=(s_{xy})$ has a banded profile so that $s_{xy}$ is negligible if $|x-y|$ exceeds the band width $W$. For dimensions $d\ge 7$, we prove the bulk eigenvalue universality of $H$ under the condition $W \gg L^{95/(d+95)}$. Assuming that $W\geq L^\epsilon $ for a small constant $\epsilon >0$, we also prove the quantum unique ergodicity for the bulk eigenvectors of $H$ and a sharp local law for the Green's function $G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}$ up to ${\mathrm{Im}} \, z \gg W^{-5}L^{5-d}$. The local law implies that the bulk eigenvector entries of $H$ are of order ${\mathrm{O}}(W^{-5/2}L^{-d/2+5/2})$ with high probability., Comment: 72 pages. Accepted by Annals of Probability

Belle II is an experiment operating at the intensity frontier. Over the next decades, it will record the decay of billions of bottom mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in 10 GeV electron-positron collisions at the SuperKEKB high-luminosity collider at KEK. These data, collected in low-background and kinematically known conditions, will allow us to measure hundreds of parameters that test the standard model (SM) and probe for the existence of new particles, at mass scales orders of magnitudes higher than those studied at the energy frontier. We project our sensitivities for measurements that are of primary relevance and where Belle II will be unique or world leading for data corresponding to 1 to 50 ab$^{-1}$. Belle II will uniquely probe non-SM contributions in sensitive $b \to q\bar q s$ decays and charmless $b \to q\bar q d(u)$ decays, semileptonic $b \to s \nu \bar\nu$ and $s \tau^+ \tau^-$ decays, fully leptonic $b \to \ell \nu$ decays, and select $c \to u$ processes. Belle II will lead exploration of non-SM physics in $b \to c \tau \nu$ and $b \to s \gamma$ decays and will most precisely determine the quark-mixing parameters $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. Belle II will measure many parameters in $\tau$ physics to precisions that will be world leading for the foreseeable future, including the electric and magnetic dipole moments, branching fractions for charged-lepton-flavor-violating decays, and quantities that test lepton-flavor universality. Belle II will perform unique searches for dark-sector particles with masses in the MeV-GeV range. We will also pursue a broad spectroscopy program for conventional and multiquark $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ states and provide essential inputs to sharpen the interpretation of muon magnetic-anomaly results. Our exploration of uncharted regions of non-SM parameter space with high precision will reveal non-SM particles or set stringent constraints on their existence, guiding future endeavors., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures. Siamese networks are widely used for remote sensing change detection tasks. A vanilla siamese network has two identical feature extraction branches which share weights, these two branches work independently and the feature maps are not fused until about to be sent to a decoder head. However we find that it is critical to exchange information between two feature extraction branches at early stage for change detection task. In this work we present Mutual-Attention Siamese Network (MASNet), a general siamese network with mutual-attention plug-in, so to exchange information between the two feature extraction branches. We show that our modification improve the performance of siamese networks on multi change detection datasets, and it works for both convolutional neural network and visual transformer., Comment: XXIV ISPRS Congress
