Aroma is an important factor that guides consumers in purchasing and is thus very important in melon research. To our knowledge, the number of studies with a focus on the aroma differences of the same melon variety in different production areas is largely limited. In this study, the differences in aroma components of "Nasmi" melons from two different production regions were analyzed using gas-phase ion migration spectroscopy. Transcriptome sequencing was performed for analyzing fragrance-related genes. Results showed that there were significant differences in the aroma components between products from the two regions. The total amount of aroma compounds from the Turpan region (TT) was 1.7 times higher than that from the Altay region (AT). Through the analysis of transcriptome data, the key genes encoding melon aroma components in different regions were identified as ethanol dehydrogenase, 3-hydroxyl-coenzyme A (CoA) dehydrogenase, acyl-CoA oxidase, long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, and acetyl-CoA acyltransferase. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed that the verified genes were similar to the transcriptome. In this study, the main aroma components of the same variety of melon that differed in different production areas and the key genes causing these differences were identified. In addition, the aroma metabolic pathway of melon in different regions was preliminarily elucidated. These results could provide a theoretical basis for further study of the formation mechanism of melon aroma and breeding.

To improve the safety of mothers and make delivery less painful we explored the auxiliary effect of the nano-silver-based temperature-sensitive gel in the vaginal delivery of primipara to reduce the pain during delivery. 120 primipara with full-term vaginal delivery were randomly divided into a conventional midwifery control group (group A), a birth canal protection group with traditional way (group B), and a nano-silver-based temperature-sensitive gel midwifery experimental group (group C). Labor time, the uterine bleeding volume at 2 hours postpartum, and the pain care of delivery were observed for each group. Postpartum follow-ups were performed on the maternal and fetus, to record the maternal soft birth canal injury, pelvic floor function recovery, adverse reactions, and Apgar score of the newborn. Compared with group A and group B, labor time (P < 0.05), uterine bleeding (P < 0.05), and the visual analog scale significantly decreased in group C (P < 0.05). Group C showed increased efficacy of pain care (P < 0.05). The incidence of cervical laceration, hematoma, and lateral episiotomy significantly decreased in the treatment group (P < 0.05). When lateral episiotomies did occur in group C the incidence of cervical laceration (0%) was significantly lower than that in group A (8.53%) and group B (4.26%) (P < 0.05). The Apgar score of newborns in group C significantly increased at 1 and 5 minutes after birth (P < 0.05) and maternal pelvic floor function score was significantly higher at 42 days postpartum (P < 0.05). Thus, the nano-silver-based temperature-sensitive gel has benefits for maternal and fetal health, as well as, pain management in obstetric delivery. These results support the wide used of nano-silver-based temperature-sensitive gel for vaginal delivery midwifery.

Tash Aw is the first renowned Malaysian writer who has brought Malaysian literature to the platform of the world. This paper uses the text, The Harmony Silk Factory(2005), by Tash Aw to investigate the relationships between traumatic memory and temporal-spatial narratives. The text utilises three narrators to tell the story of central silent character Johnny Lim, intermixing with their personal memories. We hypothesises that traumatic memories are correspondent to or characterised with special time and space arrangement of narratives. The article also frames its arguments according to the ideas proposed by Michael Toolan and Cathy Caruth, Toolan’s viewpoints about time and space in discourse and story; Caruth’s views on features of trauma. The frame of argument presupposed that circular temporal-spatial narratives have more similarities to traumatic memories than previously assumed. By analysing Jasper’s and Peter’s telling of Johnny’s experiences, the study strives to deepen the idea of chronotope arrangement being conducive to expression of traumas. The study concludes that traumas determine special arrangement of narratives, especially in the dimension of time and space, in turn, temporal-spatial narratives are to express traumas’ characteristics and even achieve some universal theme in literary works. The implication of the study allows us to view traumatic texts more objectively and deeply.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), a rising star in the post-graphene era, are fundamentally and technologically intriguing for photocatalysis. Their extraordinary electronic, optical, and chemical properties endow them as promising materials for effectively harvesting light and catalyzing the redox reaction in photocatalysis. Here, we present a tutorial-style review of the field of 2D TMDs for photocatalysis to educate researchers (especially the new-comers), which begins with a brief introduction of the fundamentals of 2D TMDs and photocatalysis along with the synthesis of this type of material, then look deeply into the merits of 2D TMDs as co-catalysts and active photocatalysts, followed by an overview of the challenges and corresponding strategies of 2D TMDs for photocatalysis, and finally look ahead this topic.

Purpose: This study aims to determine whether the dual-parameter approach combined with either time-resolved angiography with stochastic trajectories (TWIST) or golden-angle radial sparse parallel (GRASP) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has superior diagnostic performance in predicting pathological lymphovascular invasion (pLVI) rectal cancer when compared with traditional single-parameter evaluations using DWI alone. Materials and Methods: Patients with pathologically confirmed rectal cancer were enrolled. Perfusion (influx forward volume transfer constant [Ktrans] and rate constant [Kep]) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were measured by two researchers. For both sequences, areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROCs) to predict pLVI-positive rectal cancer were compared. Results: A total of 179 patients were enrolled in our study. A combined analysis of ADC and perfusion parameters (Ktrans) acquired with GRASP yielded a higher diagnostic performance compared with diffusion parameters alone (area under the curve, 0.91±0.03 vs. 0.71±0.06, PConclusion: The Ktrans of the GRASP technique improved the diagnostic performance of multiparametric MRI to predict rectal cancers with pLVI-positive. In contrast, TWIST did not achieve this effect.

Both type II and Z schemes can explain the charge transfer behavior of the heterojunction structure well, but the type of heterojunction structure formed between bismuth vanadium oxide and carbon nitride still has not been clarified. Herein, we rationally prepared bismuth vanadium oxide with {010} and {012} facets predominantly and carbon nitride as a decoration to construct a core-shell structure with bismuth vanadium oxide wrapped in carbon nitride to ensure the same photocatalytic reaction interface. Through energy band establishment and radical species investigation, both {010} and {012} facets dominated bismuth vanadium oxide/carbon nitride composites exhibit the type II heterojunction structures rather than the Z-scheme heterojunctions. Furthermore, to investigate the effect of type II heterojunction, the photocatalytic tetracycline degradations were performed, finding that {010} facets dominated bismuth vanadium oxide/carbon nitride composite demonstrated the higher degradation efficiency than that of {012} facets, due to the higher conduction band energy. Additionally, through the free radical trapping experiments and intermediate detection of degradation products, the superoxide radical was proven to be the main active radical to decompose the tetracycline molecules. Therein, the tetracycline molecules were degraded to water and carbon dioxide by dihydroxylation-demethylation-ring opening reactions. This work investigates the effect of crystal planes on heterojunction types through two different exposed crystal planes of bismuth vanadate oxide, which can provide some basic research and theoretical support for the progressive and controlled synthesis of photocatalysts with heterojunction structures.

Fundamentally understanding the complex electrochemical reactions that are associated with energy devices (e.g., rechargeable batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers) has attracted worldwide attention. In situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offers opportunities to directly observe and analyze in-liquid specimens without the need for freezing or drying, which opens up a door for visualizing these complex electrochemical reactions at the nano scale in real time. The key to the success of this technique lies in the design and fabrication of electrochemical liquid cells with thin but strong imaging windows. This protocol describes the detailed procedures of our established technique for the fabrication of such electrochemical liquid cells (~110 h). In addition, the protocol for the in situ TEM observation of electrochemical reactions by using the nanofabricated electrochemical liquid cell is also presented (2 h). We also show and analyze experimental results relating to the electrochemical reactions captured. We believe that this protocol will shed light on strategies for fabricating high-quality TEM liquid cells for probing dynamic electrochemical reactions in high resolution, providing a powerful research tool. This protocol requires access to a clean room equipped with specialized nanofabrication setups as well as TEM characterization equipment.

The two complexes were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and IR spectroscopies. Crystal structural analysis including comparisons to [Formula: see text]-oxo analogues and Hirshfeld surface calculations revealed several noteworthy structural features [Formula: see text] the various picket orientations which are partially attributed to intra- and/or inter-molecular nonbonded interactions.

With the accelerated development of smart cities, the construction and development of smart grids have an increasing impact on the safe and stable operation of power systems. The benefit evaluation of smart grids can find out the problems of smart grids more comprehensively, which is of great practical significance for the further development of smart cities. In order to ensure accuracy and real-time evaluation, this paper proposes a new hybrid intelligent evaluation model using an improved technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) and long–short-term memory (LSTM) optimized by a modified sparrow search algorithm (MSSA). First, a set of smart grid benefit evaluation index systems is established in the context of considering smart city development. Then, aiming at the reverse order problem existing in TOPSIS, an improved evaluation model with entropy weight and modified TOPSIS is established. Finally, an intelligent evaluation model based on LSTM with MSSA optimization is designed. The example analysis verifies the accuracy of the model proposed, points out the important factors affecting the benefits of smart grids, and provides a new idea to achieve effective evaluation and rapid prediction, which can help to improve the benefit level of smart grids.

CdS decorated artificial leaf BiVO4/InVO4 Z-scheme heterogeneous photocatalyst (BiVO4/InVO4 @ CdS) was synthesized for the first time by “Biological Template (BT)”-“Dipping Calcination (DC)”-“Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR)” method. The as-prepared BiVO4/InVO4 @ CdS exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity and stability for the degradation of biological hydrogen production wastewater and simultaneous production of hydrogen (H2), that can be attributed to its ascendant leaf-liked structure and Z-scheme heterogeneous composition. Furthermore, the possible mechanism of simultaneous H2 production and organic pollution oxidation in biological hydrogen production wastewater was proposed.

The direct oxidation of methane to more desirable, one-carbon oxygenated molecules such as methanol and formaldehyde offers a pathway towards a more sustainable chemical industry as the current commercial reforming process involving two steps features a high carbon footprint and energy consumption. Here, we report the selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane at room temperature using quantum-sized bismuth vanadate nanoparticles as the catalyst and oxygen as a mild oxidant. The reaction offers a high selectivity, of 96.6% for methanol or 86.7% for formaldehyde, under optimum wavelength and intensity of light, reaction time and amount of water solvent. Comprehensive characterizations disclose a multistep reaction mechanism in which the activation of methane by the hydroxyl radical determines the reaction rate. This work broadens the avenue towards the selective conversion of the greenhouse gas methane into desirable chemical products in a sustainable way. The conversion of methane to target one-carbon oxygenates relies on a two-step process that is carbon and energy intensive. Direct oxidation offers a sustainable alternative pathway. Here, the authors report on the selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane at room temperature using bismuth vanadate catalyst, realizing high methanol and formaldehyde selectivity.

Using metal as a photohole capturer can promote the photoelectron of p-type copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) substrate for efficient carbon dioxide reduction. However, palladium-decorated Cu2O (Cu2O–Pd) is seldom reported due to their mismatching band arrangement. Herein, we have successfully established a matched band alignment between Pd nanoparticles and Cu2O with exposed {100} facets (100Cu2O). The high work function of 100Cu2O originating from T1u symmetry vibration facilitates the photohole transferring to Pd nanoparticles, which leads to a three-fold increase in the photocatalytic generation of carbon monoxide (100Cu2O–0.1Pd, 0.13 μmol g−1 h−1) than that with pristine 100Cu2O (0.04 μmol g−1 h−1). Besides, the incorporation of Pd can relieve the photocorrosion of 100Cu2O, thus promoting its photocatalytic stability. As a contrast, 111Cu2O (Cu2O exposed to {111} facets) with low-work function was also synthesized and no charge migration was observed between 111Cu2O and Pd species, which verified the important role of the crystal surface regulation. All experimental phenomena were certified by the crystal surface analysis and energy band structure construction. Moreover, CO2 adsorption capacity tests indicated that the incorporation of Pd is beneficial for the capture of CO2 molecules. We hope that this work to some extent will enrich the subject of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

A heterojunction photocatalytic system has been widely called for to solve tetracycline (TC) water pollution problems. However, the pollutant degradation mechanism with a Z-scheme or double-charge transfer photocatalyst has remained ambiguous. In this work, we successfully constructed a controllable heterojunction between TiO2 and Cu2O by adjusting the exposed facets of Cu2O without additional surfactant. XPS, FT-IR, EIS, PL, EPR, LC-MS, photocurrent curves and scavenger experiments, as well as XRD characterization before and after photocatalysis, demonstrate that the heterojunction with double-charge transfer mechanism exists between TiO2 and cubic Cu2O exposed {100} facets (100Cu2O), where electrons diverted from 100Cu2O to TiO2 by O atoms to enhance the TC photocatalytic degradation rate. However, the complete decomposition of TC intermediate products was attenuated as the TC degradation reaction was drifted on the more positive conduction band of TiO2. Instead, Z-scheme heterojunction between TiO2 and octahedral Cu2O exposed {111} facets, (111Cu2O) was formed where electrons moved from the conduction band of TiO2 to the valence band of 111Cu2O by Cu atoms. Thereby, TC degradation occurred at the conduction band of 111Cu2O, which enhanced the TC photo-degradation rate and the profound decomposition of TC intermediate simultaneously. We expect that this work can contribute to the prospective application of heterojunction for the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics.

Characterizing the asymptotic distributions of eigenvectors for large random matrices poses important challenges yet can provide useful insights into a range of statistical applications. To this end, in this paper we introduce a general framework of asymptotic theory of eigenvectors (ATE) for large spiked random matrices with diverging spikes and heterogeneous variances, and establish the asymptotic properties of the spiked eigenvectors and eigenvalues for the scenario of the generalized Wigner matrix noise. Under some mild regularity conditions, we provide the asymptotic expansions for the spiked eigenvalues and show that they are asymptotically normal after some normalization. For the spiked eigenvectors, we establish asymptotic expansions for the general linear combination and further show that it is asymptotically normal after some normalization, where the weight vector can be arbitrary. We also provide a more general asymptotic theory for the spiked eigenvectors using the bilinear form. Simulation studies verify the validity of our new theoretical results. Electrical neural interfaces serve as direct communication pathways that connect the nervous system with the external world. Technological advances in this domain are providing increasingly more powerful tools to study, restore, and augment neural functions. Yet, the complexities of the nervous system give rise to substantial challenges in the design, fabrication, and system-level integration of these functional devices. In this review, we present snapshots of the latest progresses in electrical neural interfaces, with an emphasis on advances that expand the spatiotemporal resolution and extent of mapping and manipulating brain circuits. We include discussions of large-scale, long-lasting neural recording; wireless, miniaturized implants; signal transmission, amplification, and processing; as well as the integration of interfaces with optical modalities. We outline the background and rationale of these developments and share insights into the future directions and new opportunities they enable.

Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome actively regulates cognitive functions and that gut microbiome imbalance is associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. However, the changes in gut microbiome composition in AD and their association with disease pathology, especially in the early stages, are unclear. Here, we compared the profiles of gut microbiota between APP/PS1 transgenic mice (an AD mouse model) and their wild-type littermates at different ages by amplicon-based sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA genes. Microbiota composition started diverging between the APP/PS1 and wild-type mice at young ages (i.e., 1–3 months), before obvious amyloid deposition and plaque-localized microglial activation in the cerebral cortex in APP/PS1 mice. At later ages (i.e., 6 and 9 months), there were distinct changes in the abundance of inflammation-related bacterial taxa including Escherichia-Shigella, Desulfovibrio, Akkermansia, and Blautia in APP/PS1 mice. These findings suggest that gut microbiota alterations precede the development of key pathological features of AD, including amyloidosis and plaque-localized neuroinflammation. Thus, the investigation of gut microbiota might provide new avenues for developing diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for AD.

Background: Acute lung injury (ALI) is one kind of frequently occurred emergency in Intensive Care Unite with a high mortality. The underlying causes are uncontrolled inflammatory reactions and intractable hypoxemia, which are difficult to control and improve. In the past 10 years, gas medical studies have found that both hydrogen molecules and oxygen molecules have protective effects on acute lung injury by improving inflammatory reactions and hypoxia, respectively. Oxygen is an oxidant and hydrogen is an antioxidant. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of above two-gas molecular on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -induced acute lung injury.To clarify whether the combination of hydrogen and oxygen could increase or cancel out the protective effect, an ALI mice model induced by intraperitoneal injection of LPS was established, and the degree of lung tissue and mitochondria damage was evaluated based on the pathological sections, inflammatory factors, wet-dry ratio, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, western blotting and other detection methods also used to evaluate the therapeutic effect on acute lung injury model.We observed that the combined protective effect of hydrogen and oxygen was superior to their respective protective effects, and the specific molecular mechanisms of the two therapies might be different.Hydrogen plays a more important role in the inflammatory and anti-apoptosis mechanisms, while oxygen improves hypoxia of the body, and thus, its molecular mechanism may be closely associated to the hypoxia pathways.

BackgroundBlack spot disease, caused by Alternaria altrenata, is one of the most destructive diseases of jujube worldwide. To better understand the resistance mechanisms of jujube to A. altrenata infection to be able to improve disease control and resistance breeding. Two different cultivars, Zizyphus jujuba Mill. var. Jun jujube (susceptible) and Zizyphus jujuba Mill. var. Hui jujube (resistant), were tested. ResultsIn this study, we identified 2235 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the disease-resistant cultivar and 4958 in the susceptible cultivar. To better understand these DEGs, the datasets were analyzed using Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) database. Most of them were associated with plant phytohormone synthesis and signal transduction, flavonoid synthesis, and glutathione metabolism. The expression of 6 DEGs associated with disease resistance were detected by real time-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), consistent with the results of Illumina transcriptome sequencing. Moreover, the expression level of the six DEGs differently in Jun jujube and Hui jujube, verified they are defense response factors. Conclusions The present study identified several candidate resistance genes and signal transduction pathways that may contribute to black spot disease resistance in jujube, which will assist the investigation of resistance mechanisms in the response of jujube to A. altrenata infection.

Xinjiang is the main producing area of raisins and the largest green raisins production base in China. The browning of Thompson seedless grape raisin is extremely serious during the drying process, and has become the key issue in the development of Xinjiang raisin industry. Previous studies have shown that dehydration speed has a great impact on the browning of Thompson seedless grape, but few relevant mechanisms have been studied. Here, we demonstrate the effect of dehydration speed on lipid metabolism and its relation to the browning of the Thompson seedless grape during drying. Compared to slow dehydration treatment, rapid dehydration treatment of the Thompson seedless grape exhibited a lower degree of browning and activities of lipoxygenase (LOX), a higher index of unsaturated fatty acids and degree of unsaturated fatty acid. Moreover, the Thompson seedless grape treated with rapid dehydration resulted in a lower rate of superoxide anion production, hydrogen peroxide content, membrane permeability, and malondialdehyde content. These findings demonstrate that rapid dehydration inhibiting the browning of Thompson seedless grapes might be due to the inhibiting activities of LOX and the lower accumulation of reactive oxygen species. These activities can inhibit lipid peroxidation and slow the decomposition of unsaturated fatty acid in the membrane in Thompson seedless grapes, protecting the cellular membrane structural integrity, which may result in less contact of polyphenol oxidase with phenolic substrates and less enzymatic browning during drying. The results provide a theoretical basis for the application of rapid dehydration in drying Thompson seedless grapes.

Furfural is one of the most important biomass platform compounds and can be used to prepare various high-value-added chemicals. The reactions of furfural with aliphatic alcohols via an oxidative esterification reaction or oxidative condensation reaction can bond two carbon molecules together and produce longer hydrocarbon chains chemicals, including methylfuroate and some low-volatility liquid biomass fuels. Thus, these reactions are considered significant utilization routes of furfural, and many inspiring catalytic systems have been designed to promoted these reactions. In this work, the reported catalytic systems for the oxidative esterification and oxidative condensation reactions are reviewed separately. The catalysts for the oxidative esterification reaction are reviewed for the classification of noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal catalysts, according to the active metals in the catalysts. For the oxidative condensation reactions, the studies using oxygen as the oxidant are reviewed firstly, and then the studies conducted using the hydrogen transfer process are analyzed subsequently. Furthermore, suggestions for future research directions for the oxidative esterification and oxidative condensation reactions are put forward.

Dysbiosis of human gut microbiota has been reported in association with ulcerative colitis (UC) in both children and adults using either 16S rRNA gene or shotgun sequencing data. However, these studies used either 16S rRNA or metagenomic shotgun sequencing but not both. We sequenced feces samples from 19 pediatric UC and 23 healthy children ages between 7 to 21 years using both 16S rRNA and metagenomic shotgun sequencing. The samples were analyzed using three different types of data: 16S rRNA genus level abundance, microbial species and pathway abundance profiles. We demonstrated that (a) the alpha diversity of pediatric UC cases is lower than that of healthy controls; (b) the beta diversity within children with UC is more variable than within the healthy children; (c) several microbial families including Akkermansiaceae, Clostridiaceae, Eggerthellaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and Oscillospiraceae, contain species that are depleted in pediatric UC compared to controls; (d) a few associated species unique to pediatric UC, but not adult UC, were also identified, e.g. some species in the Christensenellaceae family were found to be depleted and some species in the Enterobacteriaceae family were found to be enriched in pediatric UC; and (e) both 16S rRNA and shotgun sequencing data can predict pediatric UC status with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of close to 0.90 based on cross validation. We showed that 16S rRNA data yielded similar results as shotgun data in terms of alpha diversity, beta diversity, and prediction accuracy. Our study demonstrated that pediatric UC subjects harbor a dysbiotic and less diverse gut microbial population with distinct differences from healthy children. We also showed that 16S rRNA data yielded accurate disease prediction results in comparison to shotgun data, which can be more expensive and laborious. These conclusions were confirmed in an independent data set of 7 pediatric UC cases and 8 controls.

Photocatalytic conversion of methane to value-added products under mild conditions, which represents a long-sought-after goal for industrial sustainable production, remains extremely challenging to afford high production and selectivity using cheap catalysts. Herein, we present the crystal phase engineering of commercially available anatase TiO2 via simple thermal annealing to optimize the structure-property correlation. Biphase catalyst of anatase (90%) and rutile (10%) TiO2 exhibits the exceptional performance in the oxidation of methane to formaldehyde under the reaction condition of water solvent, oxygen atmosphere and full-spectrum light irradiation. An unprecedented production of 24.27 mmol gcat-1 with an excellent selectivity of 97.4% towards formaldehyde is acquired at room temperature after a 3 h reaction. Both experimental results and theoretical calculation disclose that the crystal phase engineering of TiO2 lengthens the lifetime of photogenerated carriers and favors the formation of intermediate methanol species, thus maximizing the efficiency and selectivity in aerobic oxidation of methane to formaldehyde. More importantly, the feasibility of scale-up production of formaldehyde is demonstrated by inventing the "pause-flowing" reactor. This work opens the avenue towards industrial methane transformation in a sustainable and economical way.
