Micro/nanoscale lasers that can deliver intense coherent light signals at (sub)wavelength scale have attracted great interest because of their promising applications ranging from on-chip information processing to high-throughput sensing. Compared with traditional inorganic materials, organic materials are ideal platforms to construct high performance microlasers, mainly because of their superiority in flexibly assembled structures for high-quality microcavities and abundant excited-state processes with large active cross sections for high gain emissions. This review begins with an overview of the research evolution of organic microlasers in terms of microcavity resonators and energy-level gain. Then a series of strategies to tailor the microcavity structures and excited-state dynamics of organic materials for the modulation of lasing performances are highlighted. Subsequently, we present the design and construction of organic-microlaser-based hybrid structures with advanced photonic functionalities. In the following part, we introduce their applications in chemical sensing, biosensing and integrated nanophotonics. Finally, we provide our outlook on the current challenges as well as the future direction of organic microlasers. It is anticipated that this review will provide inspiration for the development of miniaturized lasers with desired performances by tailoring of excited-state processes and microcavity structures toward practical applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, with large second-order nonlinear susceptibility, have received much scientific interest due to their potential applications in nonlinear optical devices. However, the atomic thickness of 2D layered materials leads to poor field confinement and weak light–matter interaction at the nanoscale, resulting in low nonlinear conversion efficiency. Here, 2D pyramid-like multilayer (P-multilayer) layered structures are fabricated for efficient edge second-harmonic generation (SHG) based on the enhanced light–matter interaction in whispering-gallery mode (WGM) cavities. The P-multilayer 2D layered materials, where the basal planes shrink gradually from the bottom to the top layers, exhibit efficient edge SH radiation due to the partial destructive interference of nonlinear polarizations between the neighboring atomic layers. Low-dimensional organic materials have given rise to tremendous interest in optoelectronic applications, owing to their controllable photonic properties. However, the controlled-synthesis approaches for organic nano-/micro-architectures are very difficult to attain, because the weak interaction (van der Waals force) between the organic molecules cannot dominate the kinetic process of crystal growth. We report a simple method, which involves selective adhesion to the organic crystal plane by hydrogen-bonding interaction for modulating the crystal growth process, which leads either to the self-assembly of one organic molecule into two-dimensional (2D) microsheets with an obvious asymmetric light propagation or one-dimensional (1D) microrods with low propagation loss. The method of tailoring the structures and photonic properties for fabricating different micro-structures would provide enlightenment for the development of tailor-made mini-sized devices for photonic integrated circuits.

Directing the architecture of complex organic nanostructures is desirable and still remains a challenge in areas of materials science due to their structure-dependent collective optoelectronic properties. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and versatile solution strategy that allows surface tension to drive low-dimensional nanostructures to aggregate into complex structures via a lab in a droplet technique. By selecting a suitable combination of a solvent and an anti-solvent with controllable surface tension difference, the droplets can be automatically cracked into micro-droplets, which provides an aggregation force directed toward the centre of the droplet to drive the low-dimensional building blocks to form the special aggregations during the self-assembly process. This synthetic strategy has been shown to be universal for organic materials, which is beneficial for further optimizing the optoelectronic properties. These results contribute to gaining an insightful understanding on the detailed growth mechanism of complex organic nanostructures and greatly promoting the development of organic nanophotonics.

Ultracompact coherent light sources with broadband wavelength tunability and subwavelength optical waveguiding have attracted extensive attention due to their potential applications ranging from multicolor detection to multiband on-chip photonic communication. Metal–dielectric nonlinear structures, which comprise nonlinear dielectric materials and metal films, have been widely used to generate nanoscale broadband tunable coherent light sources through the second-harmonic generation process below the diffraction limit. However, restricted by high ohmic losses at the metal–dielectric surface, subwavelength propagation of SHG signals with low loss remains a big challenge. Here, a novel strategy is utilized to reduce the propagation loss of SHG signals based on the coupling between the waveguide mode and plasmonic mode in a hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW). The generated hybrid plasmonic mode in the HPW exhibits strong optical confinement around the nonlinear dielectric and insulating gap, which is beneficial for minimizing the ohmic losses at the metal–dielectric interface and enhancing the light–matter interaction below the diffraction limit. Moreover, under the phase matching condition, the propagation loss of SHG signals is partially compensated for by the frequency conversion of the fundamental wave (FW) through the SHG process. As a result, low propagation loss of enhanced SHG signals at a subwavelength scale is realized in HPWs.

Solid-state fluorescent materials have attracted a surge of interest in recent years due to their wide applications in the fields of photoelectric devices, memory storage and fluorescent probes. Compared to the synthesis of new molecules, exploring new properties in known molecules is a facile approach to obtain functionalized fluorescent materials. In this report, we systematically explored the solid-state photoluminescence properties and applications of 7-(diethylamino)coumarin-3-aldehyde (DCA) and 7-(diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (DCCA). Both fluorophores exhibited a special concentration-dependent emission effect. They displayed polymorphism dependent solid-state emission and single crystal analysis revealed that enhanced overlap between neighbouring molecules resulted in a red-shifted emission. Crystal-to-crystal transformation has also been achieved for both DCA and DCCA by employing an external thermal treatment. In addition, the solid powder of DCA and DCCA displayed fluorescence response to HCl and NH3 gas with high sensitivity. Furthermore, 1D micromaterials were assembled for both fluorophores and DCA exhibited outstanding optical waveguide behavior.

Objective: To analysis the risk factors of nonsurgical vertebral refracture by making retrospectively study about patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) had accepted vertebroplasty.Methods: From June 2016 to December 2017, there were 161 cases of OVCF patients were treated with single-segment vertebroplasty in our department, and follow-up data including age, gender, bone density, bone cement volume, bone cement puncture route, bone cement leakage and vertebral refracture were collected.T-test and chi-square test were used to analyze the possible risk factors for postoperative vertebral refracture.Results: Among 161 patients treated with vertebroplasty, 19 of them had refracture. Although many efforts have been attempted by scientists worldwide, electrically pumped organic lasing emission still remains as one of the greatest challenges in the field of optoelectronics. Recently, Shuai and coworkers proposed a computational strategy based on time-dependent density functional theory(TDDFT), offering a new avenue to the molecule design and materials selection towards electrically pumped organic lasers. Molecular material property prediction package(MOMAP) previously developed by this group was utilized to obtain photophysical parameters of various organic lasing molecules, and to estimate whether they can fulfill the criteria for electrical pumping. Under systematic calculation and evaluation, three compounds, BP3T, CzPVSBF, and BSBCz were screened out as promising candidates, revealing the reliability and universality of the proposed computational strategy. The excitation of surface plasmons by optical emitters based on exciton-plasmon coupling is important for plasmonic devices with active optical properties. It has been theoretically demonstrated that the orientation of exciton dipole can significantly influence the coupling strength, yet systematic study of the coupling process in nanostructures is still hindered by the lack of proper material systems. In this work, we have experimentally investigated the orientation-dependent exciton-plasmon coupling in a rationally designed organic/metal nanowire heterostructure system. The heterostructures were prepared by inserting silver nanowires into crystalline organic waveguides during the self-assembly of dye molecules. Structures with different exciton orientations exhibited varying coupling efficiencies. The near-field exciton-plasmon coupling facilitates the design of nanophotonic devices based on the directional surface plasmon polariton propagations.

Rare earth doping has been widely applied in many functional nanomaterials with desirable properties and functions, which would have a significant effect on the growth process of the materials. However, the controlling strategy is limited into high concentration of lanthanide doping, which produces concentration quenching of the lanthanide ion luminescence with an increase in the Ln3+ concentration, resulting in lowering the fluorescence quantum yield of lanthanide ion. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate simultaneous control of the structures and luminescence properties of BaCO3 nanocrystals via a small amount of Tb3+ doping strategy. In fact, Tb3+ would partially occupy Ba2+ sites, resulting in the changes to the structures of the BaCO3 nanocrystals, which is primarily determined by charge modulation, including the contributions from the surfaces of crystal nuclei and building blocks. These structurally modified nanocrystals exhibit tunable luminescence properties, thus emerging as potential candidates for photonic devices such as light-emitting diodes and color displays.

All-color subwavelength output of lasers was demonstrated in a rationally designed organic microdisk/silver nanowire heterostructures. The dye-doped flexible microdisks served as the wavelength tunable whispering-gallery-mode lasers with low lasing thresholds, whereas the silver nanowires supported the output of the lasing mode as subwavelength coherent light sources. The wavelength of the outcoupled laser was tuned over the full visible spectrum scope owing to the flexibility of the microdisks and their compatibility with various organic laser dyes. Furthermore, a multicolor subwavelength laser was achieved in a single heterostructure and the laser output was successfully modulated by varying the surface plasmon polariton propagation length.

Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have received much attention owing to their structural tunability and widely photofunctional applications. However, successful examples of Ln-MOFs with well-defined photonic performances at micro-/nanometer size are still quite limited. Herein, self-assemblies of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) and lanthanide ions afford isostructural crystalline Ln-MOFs. Tb-BTC, Eu@Tb-BTC, and Eu-BTC have 1D microrod morphologies, high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields, and different emission colors (green, orange, and red). Spatially PL resolved spectra confirm that Ln-MOF microrods exhibit an optical waveguide effect with low waveguide loss coefficient (0.012≈0.033 dB μm−1) during propagation. Furthermore, these microrods feature both linear and chiral polarized photoemission with high anisotropy.

The rational design of multifunctional materials with both emissive and semiconducting properties remains a challenge. A multifunctional cruciform donor–acceptor (D–A) molecule, 2,2′-(((4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))dimalononitrile (BDTTM), which contains a benzodithiophene as the central core, has been synthesized and, based on the output and transfer characteristics of the corresponding FETs, thin films of BDTTM exhibited ambipolar semiconducting behavior. Notably, FETs with thin films of BDTTM showed a photoresponse in both p- and n-channels, and drain-source-current enhancement under white-light irradiation could be detected, even at a low light intensity of 0.1 mW cm−2. Furthermore, BDTTM exhibited red-light emission both in solution and as a crystalline solid. A microplate of BDTTM with red-light emission displayed typical optical waveguiding behavior.

In this work, we chose tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II)hexafluorophosphate (Ru(bpy)3(PF6)2), a metal-organic complex material, to prepare nanowires, which were subsequently applied for the construction of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor by immobilizing them onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with graphene-Nafion composite films. The graphene therein, being a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial with outstanding electronic properties, can obviously improve the conductivity of the Nafion film, as well as enhance the electrochemical signal and ECL intensity of the Ru(bpy)3(PF6)2 nanowires (RuNWs) at low graphene concentration. The developed biosensor exhibited excellent ECL stability with tripropylamine (TPrA) as co-reactant. The ECL biosensor exhibited high sensitive ECL response in a wide linear range and low detection limit for the detection of proline. It is considered that the oxidation products of proline would be responsible for the ECL enhancement. The large electro-active area of the nanowires and the enhancement effect of the graphene played critical roles in the high detection performance of the ECL biosensor. The results demonstrated herein may provide a useful enlightenment for the design of more sensitive ECL biosensors.

Organic microlasers are miniaturized coherent light sources with great promise for advancing the field of optoelectronics. Recently, host–guest composite organic microlasers, where the host materials provide spatial confinement for the organic gain materials, have captured much research interest because the host–guest composite material systems endow the organic microlasers with improved lasing performances, such as low threshold, high stability, and excellent tunability. In this Review, we explore the latest advancements in the development of host–guest composite organic microlasers, and offer our perspective on future improvements and trends. Special emphasis is put on the construction strategies and the unique laser properties of the organic microlasers based on host–guest confinement systems. The comprehensive understanding of the relationship between laser performances and the synergistic interactions of the host and guest materials would provide a useful guidance for the design and fabrication of novel organic microlasers.

We demonstrate the fabrication of organic high Q active whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators from π-conjugated polymer by a controlled emulsion-solvent-evaporation method, which can simultaneously provide optical gain and act as an effective resonant cavity. By measuring the shift of their lasing modes on exposure to organic vapor, we successfully monitored the slight concentration variation in the chemical gas. These microlaser sensors demonstrated high detection sensitivity and good signal repeatability under continuous chemical gas treatments. The results offer an effective strategy to design miniaturized optical sensors.

Refractive index is one of the important physical properties, which is widely used in separation and purification. In this study, the refractive index data of ILs were collected to establish a comprehensive database, which included about 2138 pieces of data from 1996 to 2014. The Group Contribution-Artificial Neural Network (GC-ANN) model and Group Contribution (GC) method were employed to predict the refractive index of ILs at different temperatures from 283.15 K to 368.15 K. Average absolute relative deviations (AARD) of the GC-ANN model and the GC method were 0.179% and 0.628%, respectively. The results showed that a GC-ANN model provided an effective way to estimate the refractive index of ILs, whereas the GC method was simple and extensive. In summary, both of the models were accurate and efficient approaches for estimating refractive indices of ILs.

Wavelength switchable micro/nanoscale laser is essential to construct various ultracompact photonic devices. However, traditional semiconductors as the gain media generally provide only monochromatic laser output due to their continuous energy band structures. For luminescent conjugated molecules, the broad emission band usually contains a series of vibronic peaks, which is very helpful for extending the lasing spectrum to several different wavelengths. Here we propose a novel strategy to realize wavelength switchable lasers based on the controlled competition of dual-wavelength vibronic lasing in single-component organic microcrystals. The vibrationally structured fluorescence property of the single-crystal organic microdisks brings dual-wavelength lasing at different vibronic bands. Photonic materials use photons as information carriers and offer the potential for unprecedented applications in optical and optoelectronic devices. In this study, we introduce a new strategy for photonic materials using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the host for the rational construction of donor-acceptor (D-A) heterostructure crystals. We have engineered a rich library of heterostructure crystals using the MOF NKU-111 as a host. NKU-111 is based upon an electron-deficient tridentate ligand (acceptor) that can bind to various electron-rich guests (donors). The resulting heterocrystals exhibit spatially segregated multi-color emission resulting from the guest-dependent charge-transfer (CT) emission. Spatially effective mono-directional energy transfer results from tuning the energy gradient between adjacent domains through the selection of donor guest molecules, which suggests potential applications in integrated optical circuit devices, for example, photonic diodes, on-chip signal processing, optical logic gates.

To understand the characteristics such as the pollutants and the sources of heavy metals in the Hunchun basin farmland soil, soil samples were collected and the contents of As, Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Cd were measured. The enrichment factor (EF) was calculated. Multiple statistical analyses including correlation analysis and principal component analysis was executed. The results show that the mean contents of As Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Cd were 9.09 mg kg−1, 0.06 mg kg−1, 20.17 mg kg−1, 23.34 mg kg−1, 68.25 mg kg−1, 65.02 mg kg−1, 22.91 mg kg−1, and 0.12 mg kg−1, respectively in the Hunchun basin. The values of the mean content were not above the criterion of the China Standard of Soil Environmental Quality (GB15618-1995, CSSEQ). The contents of Pb and Zn were lower than the background values of Jilin province. However, the contents of the other heavy metals exceeded the background values, particularly for Hg. More than 20% of the samples were significantly polluted by Hg, according to the EF, and less than 10% by other elements. The main sources of mercury in the Hunchun basin are artificial activity such as the lighting of coal fires by power stations and loose residents, dusts arising from coal transport, pesticides, and fertilizers. The other heavy metals reach along with the parent material in the whole area. However, in the high enrichment area, the sources of Cu, Zn, and Cd were farming, communications, and transportation; the sources of As are sewage irrigation, pesticides, and fertilizers; the sources of Pb are communication and transportation; the sources of Cr are dusts from the mining, transport, and burning of coal.

Polymorphism and anisotropy are fundamental phenomena of crystalline materials. However, the structure-dependent photoluminescent (PL) anisotropy in polymorphic organic crystals has remained unexplored. Herein, two polymorphic nanocrystals, green-emitting nanorods (PtD-g) and yellow-emitting nanoplates (PtD-y), were obtained from a platinum(II)−β-diketonate complex. The PtD-y crystals display remarkable PL anisotropy with an anisotropy ratio of up to 0.87 whereas the emission of the PtD-g crystals is nearly unpolarized. The polarization properties are rationalized on the different molecular packing of these crystals. By light-harvesting energy transfer, the PtD-y crystals are successfully used to amplify the emission polarization of a red-emitting platinum acceptor (PtA) doped into the donor crystalline matrix, which is otherwise weakly polarized as pure crystals.

Organic contamination of groundwater is a major concern in China. However, remediation technology for groundwater contamination to address the potential harm and danger brought by the above-mentioned serious issue is still in the research stage. This study aims to improve the current research findings. In the research project, drilling, soil, and groundwater sampling and analysis were conducted in a contamination site of a petrochemical plant, migration of contaminants to the river was predicted using a numerical model, the sequence permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for treating nitrobenzene (NB) and benzene was proposed, and simulation was carried out. Research findings demonstrated that three leaking locations had been identified in the plant, the major pollutants were NB and benzene, and the groundwater contamination area was around 640000 m2. Computation results of the numerical model indicated that, in the worst case, the groundwater plume would reach the river after migration for nearly 9 years, which would endanger the safety of surface water supply. Furthermore, the two- PRB system with the filling of zero-valent iron (ZVI) and granular activated carbon attached with biofilm exerted strong remediation effects. Experimental results indicated that ZVI could transform NB to aniline effectively with a rate of approximately 93%. Meanwhile, aniline, benzene, and other organic pollutants could easily be biodegraded.

We propose a general approach for obtaining dual-wavelength organic microlasers in amphiphilic Janus resonators, where hydrophilic and hydrophobic dyes can be spatially separated via polarity-driven encapsulation. Low-threshold dual-wavelength lasing was achieved in a single Janus particle with well-modulated output. This universal approach enables flexibly designing the lasing wavelength of the Janus microlasers in the full visible spectrum by systematically altering the encapsulated laser dyes. Our findings demonstrate a promising route to the photonic integration at the micro-/nanoscale that may lead to the innovation of concepts and device architectures for multifunctional optoelectronic applications.

We demonstrate efficient and stable dual-wavelength microlasers fabricated by encapsulating different organic dyes into metal–organic framework (MOF) microcrystals. The intermolecular interactions between the organic dyes are suppressed effectively by the spatial confinement effect of the MOF pores, enabling a simultaneously efficient optical gain, and therefore lasing at different wavelengths. The results represent an important step towards a function-oriented laser material design.

Recently, a type of synthetic highly efficient OLED molecule based on a hybridized local excitation and charge transfer (HLCT) character has received much attention as a potential high-efficiency fluorescent OLED material. In this article, we report the relaxation dynamics of the excited states of cyano-substituted oligo α-phenylenevinylene-1,4-bis(R-cyano-4-diphenylaminostyryl)-2,5-diphenylbenzene (CNDPASDB) with HLCT character using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations. The dramatic dependence of the fluorescence quantum yield, radiative and non-radiative rate, as well as the excited state relaxation pathways on solvent polarity reveals that the solvation process controls the energy levels of two closely spaced electronic excited states. By employing femtosecond transient absorption spectra, the gradual transition from the LE state to the intramolecular CT state with an increase in solvent polarity is clearly resolved. In low-polarity solvents the fluorescence of CNDPASDB is mainly emission from the LE state, whereas in high-polarity solvents non-radiative decay from the CT state dominates. And in medium-polarity solvents, because of the relatively weaker solvation-induced stabilization of the CT state, its energy could be equal to or slightly lower than that of the LE state, leading to a smaller driving force for LE → CT interconversion; therefore complete LE → CT interconversion cannot take place. In this situation, LE ↔ CT intercrossed equilibration is established and the equilibrium constant is further estimated to be about 4 according to the obtained kinetics, and the equilibrium population of the CT state is about 80%. DFT/TDDFT analysis also confirmed an efficient intercrossing of LE and CT states with an increase in solvent polarity. It is found that upon increasing the solvent polarity, the hole and electron on a molecule are entirely separated, suggesting a complete CT character. These results provide guidance for understanding the relationship between solvent polarity and the HLCT process, as well as for designing and synthesizing advanced OLED materials.

The outcoupling of whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasers is crucial for the realization of various photonic functionalities, yet present material structures still suffered the unexpected surface damages or contaminations in the multistep micro/nanofabrications. Here, we propose a strategy to achieve controlled outcoupling of WGM lasers in self-assembled organic single-crystalline microrings. The microrings with molecular-smooth surfaces functioned as organic crystalline whispering-gallery-mode microlasers with a lasing threshold of ∼14.2 μJ cm–2 and a quality factor on the order of 103 to 104. The circular self-assembly allowed us to design different derived ring-based structures toward desired outcoupling of the WGM lasers, including unidirectional laser output from wire-ring coupled structures, and single-mode lasing in double-ring coupled systems. The results would provide an alternative avenue to construct versatile organic nanoscale lasers and related components with specific photonic applications.

We demonstrate highly efficient InGaN-based mini-size green light-emitting diodes (mLEDs) with AlGaN insertion layer in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results reveal that 'V' defects within active region can be effectively reduced by AlGaN insertion layer. Photoluminescence (PL) and time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) results indicate an increase of radiative recombination efficiency. Very high performance 523 nm InGaN green flip-chip mLEDs (0.025 mm2) with distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) show a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 38.0%, a high wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of 32.1% and a low forward voltage of 2.8 V at a working current density of 20 A cm-2, which are very promising for display application.

Wavelength-tunable lasers were experimentally achieved through exciton funneling in light-harvesting organic microcrystals., Organic solid-state lasers are essential for various photonic applications, yet current-driven lasing remains a great challenge. Charge transfer (CT) complexes formed with p-/n-type organic semiconductors show great potential in electrically pumped lasers, but it is still difficult to achieve population inversion owing to substantial nonradiative loss from delocalized CT states. Here, we demonstrate the lasing action of CT complexes based on exciton funneling in p-type organic microcrystals with n-type doping. The CT complexes with narrow bandgap were locally formed and surrounded by the hosts with high-lying energy levels, which behave as artificial light-harvesting systems. Excitation light energy captured by the hosts was delivered to the CT complexes, functioning as exciton funnels to benefit lasing actions. The lasing wavelength of such composite microcrystals was further modulated by varying the degree of CT. The results offer a comprehensive understanding of exciton funneling in light-harvesting systems for the development of high-performance organic lasing devices.

In this Account, we will review the recent advances in organic miniaturized lasers, with an emphasis on tunable laser performances based on the tailorable microcavity structures and controlled excited-state gain processes of organic materials toward integrated photonic applications. Organic π-conjugated molecules with weak intermolecular interactions readily assemble into regular nanostructures that can serve as high-quality optical microcavities for the strong confinement of photons. On the basis of rational material design, a series of optical microcavities with different structures have been controllably synthesized. These microcavity nanostructures can be endowed with effective four-level dynamic gain processes, such as excited-state intramolecular charge transfer, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer, and excimer processes, that exhibit large dipole optical transitions for strongly active gain behaviors. By tailoring these excited-state processes with molecular/crystal engineering and external stimuli, people have effectively modulated the performances of organic micro/nanolasers. Furthermore, by means of controlled assembly and tunable laser performances, efficient outcoupling of microlasers has been successfully achieved in various organic hybrid microstructures, showing considerable potential for the integrated photonic applications. This Account starts by presenting an overview of the research evolution of organic microlasers in terms of microcavity resonators and energy-level gain. Then a series of strategies to tailor the microcavity structures and excited-state dynamics of organic nanomaterials for the modulation of lasing performances are highlighted. In the following part, we introduce the construction and advanced photonic functionalities of organic-microlaser-based hybrid structures and their applications in integrated nanophotonics. Finally, we provide our outlook on the current challenges as well as the future development of organic microlasers. It is anticipated that this Account will provide inspiration for the development of miniaturized lasers with desired performances by tailoring of excited-state processes and microcavity structures toward integrated photonic applications.

Solid state emissive materials with high quantum yields and tunable emissions are desirable for various applications. A new TPE derivative (1) with two carbazole moieties and two cyano groups is reported, which shows typical aggregation induced emission behavior. Four crystals 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d are obtained after crystallization from N,N-dimethylformamid (DMF), trichloromethane (CHCl3 ), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and dichloromethane (CH2 Cl2 ), respectively. Crystal structural analyses reveal that (i) molecules of 1 co-crystallize with DMF, CHCl3 , THF, and CH2 Cl2 in 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, respectively, and (ii) conformations of 1 are different within 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d, and compound 1 within crystal 1a adopts the most twisting conformation. Crystalline solids 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d exhibit high emission quantum yields up to 0.65, but their emission colors are varied from blue to green. In comparison, the amorphous solid of 1 is yellow-emissive with emission maximum at 542 nm. Moreover, the blue- or green-emissive crystalline solids and the yellow-emissive amorphous solid can be inter-converted by the grinding of crystalline solids and exposure of the amorphous solid to vapors of appropriate solvents. It is also demonstrated that microrods of 1a, 1b, and 1d show typical optical waveguiding behavior.

Nanoscale lasers are ideal light-signal sources for integrated photonic devices. Most of the present lasers made of dielectric materials are restricted to being larger than half the wavelength of the optical field. Plasmon lasers made from metallic nanostructures can help to break the diffraction limit, yet they suffer from low optical pump efficiencies and low quality factors. Integrating dielectric lasers with plasmonic waveguides to construct hybrid material systems may circumvent these problems and combine the advantages of the two components. Here we demonstrate the nanoscale output of dielectric lasers via photon-plasmon coupling in rationally designed perovskite/silver heterostructures. The perovskite crystals offer the gain and high-Q cavity for low-threshold laser generation, while the embedded silver nanowires (AgNWs) help to output the lasing modes efficiently in the form of surface plasmons. The output coupling can be modulated by controlling the resonant modes of the two-dimensional perovskite microcavities. The results would pave an alternative avenue to ultrasmall light sources as well as fundamental studies of light-matter interactions.

Wavelength tunable micro/nanolasers are indispensable components for various photonic devices. Here, we report broadband tunable microlasers built by incorporating a highly polarized organic intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) compound with a supramolecular host. The spatial confinement of the ICT dye generates an optimized energy level system that favors controlled population distribution between the locally excited (LE) state and the twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) state, which is beneficial for significantly broadening the tailorable gain region. As a result, we realized a wide tuning of lasing wavelength in the organic supramolecular microcrystals based on temperature-controlled population transfer from the LE to TICT state. The results will provide a useful enlightenment for the rational design of miniaturized lasers with desired performances.

Nanophotonics have recently captured broad attention because of their great potential in information processing and communication, which may allow rates and bandwidth beyond what is feasible in the realm of electronics. Organic materials could be well suitable for such applications due to their ability to generate, transmit, modulate and detect light in their lightweight and flexible nanoarchitectures. Their distinct nanophotonic properties strongly depend on their extrinsic morphologies and intrinsic molecular excited-state processes. In this feature article, we mainly focus on a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between molecular excited-state processes and the advanced photonic functionalities of organic micro/nano-crystals in recent organic nanophotonic research, and then expect to provide enlightenment for the design and development of tiny photonic devices with broadband tunable properties by tailoring the excited-state processes of organic microcrystals.

Predicting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) solubility in ionic liquids (ILs) is vital for industrial gas desulphurization. In this work, the qualitative analysis of the influence of cations and anions on the H2S solubility in ILs has been conducted. The results indicate that anions play an important role in determining the H2S solubility in ILs. Subsequently, two novel quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) models are developed based on charge distribution area (Sσ-profile) descriptors and an extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm. To develop the QSPR models, a total of 1282 pieces of data belonging to 27 ILs are employed to validate the models. The average absolute relative deviation (AARD%) and coefficient of determination (R2) of the two QSPR models of the entire data set are 3.73% and 0.998, as well as 3.80% and 0.997, respectively. These results suggest that the proposed QSPR models can be useful for the prediction of H2S solubility in ILs.

A beneficial "microenvironment effect" on the efficiency of confined electrocatalysts is predicted by theory. However, examples of its experimental confirmation are scarce for catalysts based on polyoxometalates for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). For this purpose, the cyclic 48-tungsto-8-phosphate [H7P8W48O184](33) (P8W48) was fixed in a 3D configuration on reduced graphene oxide sheets (rGO) to boost its HER activity. The HRTEM imaging and the solid state P-31 NMR spectrum of P8W48/rGO reveal a strong interaction between individual P8W48 and transparent rGO sheets. The calculation of the interaction between P8W48 and graphene (G) sheets is difficult to perform within a reasonable period of time because of the large size and very high overall negative charge of P8W48. However, as P8W48 is symmetrical, a quarter of its structure [H2P2W12O48](12-) (P2W12) was extracted as a DFT calculation model. As P8W48 in P8W48/rGO is neutral, due to surrounding counter cations, the calculation model P2W12 is neutral with protons considering the affordable computational time. The adsorption energy for P2W12 on G (-1.55 eV) and the charge transfer between P2W12 and G (0.66 vertical bar e vertical bar) indicate that a strong interaction between P2W12 and G sheets exists. Kinetic studies show that the P8W48/rGO hybrids display excellent HER activity in acid, further confirmed by reproducible generation of hydrogen with quantitative faradaic yield and a high turnover frequency (11 s(-1) at 295 mV overpotential) for a noble metal-free electrocatalyst. Importantly, the overpotentials required for the HER compare well with those of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt% Pt), which indicates that P8W48/rGO is a promising cheap HER electrocatalyst. We demonstrate here the most convincing experimental evidence of the "microenvironment effect" on HER electrocatalysis by a polyoxometalate.

Two isostructural dense lanthanide metal–organic frameworks derived from an extended ligand 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H3BTB), [Ln(BTB)H2O]n (Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Dy, 2), which are constructed via a cross-like folding assembly strategy, were yielded by ‘two-step warming solvothermal synthesis’. Complex 1 shows luminescence while complex 2 exhibits field-induced two-step magnetic relaxation.

In this work, we employ the Corey–Fuchs reaction followed by coupling reactions to develop a series of π-conjugated aggregation-induced emission (AIE) small-molecule luminophores (DT2A, DT3A and DT4A) through a 2,2-(2,2-diphenylethene-1,1-diyl)dithiophene (DPDT) core with different amounts and different strengths of TPA peripheral moieties. Interestingly, these molecules give obviously higher solid fluorescent quantum efficiency and AIE phenomena. In particular, the thin film of DT3A exhibited the highest fluorescent quantum efficiency of ca. 25% and the DT2A showed the highest αAIE of 78. Moreover, the excellent optical waveguide applications of DT2A and DT4A were achieved because of their excellent self-assembly properties. Meanwhile, piezofluorochromic behavior with a large red shift of 35 nm only appeared when DT4A was ground using a pestle, because DT4A inserted more TPA and changed the twisting conformation. The piezofluorochromic behavior can be recovered to its original color by fuming with solvent. Finally, DT2A and DT4A were utilized as fluorescent probes to detect nitroaromatic/nitroaliphatic compounds and showed evident fluorescence quenching. These results indicate a huge potential to develop bright AIEgens based on DPDT core units and also provide insights into understanding how piezofluorochromism, optical waveguides and explosive detection properties are influenced by alternating the spatial symmetry of AIE materials with different numbers of TPA terminal groups.

A new type of flavone-based fluorescent probe (DMAF) capable of cysteine (Cys)/homocysteine (Hcy) sensing with high selectivity over other amino acids was developed. Such type of probe undergoes Cys/Hcy-mediated cyclization reaction with the involvement of its aldehyde group, which suppresses of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process of the probe molecule and consequently leads to the enhancement of fluorescence emission upon excitation using visible light. The formation of product of the Cys/Hcy-mediated cyclization reaction was confirmed and the preliminary fluorescence imaging experiments revealed the biocompatibility of the as-prepared probe and validated its practicability for intracellular Cys/Hcy sensing.

Metal materials, supporting plasmon modes on their surface, can confine the optical field at deep subwavelength scale, which is desired for photonic integration. However, their intrinsic high Ohmic losses make it impossible to construct the whole circuit solely with the metal materials. Integrating the plasmonic components with dielectric materials may offer a solution to this dilemma. With outstanding active optical performance, these dielectric components not only can greatly reduce the optical losses of the entire circuits but also offer an efficient way to launch the surface plasmon polaritons through the evanescent field coupling or the direct exciton-plasmon conversion. Furthermore, the cooperative interaction between metal and dielectric materials would bring vast novel optical phenomena and functional photonic devices. In this review, the synergistic effects among metal and dielectric materials in various heterostructures as well as their related applications are highlighted. Comprehensive understanding on their synergistic interactions would offer useful guidance for the design and fabrication of the ultracompact novel optical devices.
