Ga4B2O9, an aluminium-free mullite-type compound, was prepared by a boric-acid flux method and its structure was determined using powder X-ray diffraction techniques, in combination with transmission electron microscopy, solid-state 11B MAS-NMR and IR spectroscopies. GaO6 octahedra share edges in a trans-manner forming one-dimensional chains along the b direction, and the chains are further cross-linked by GaO5, BO3 and BO4 groups into a three-dimensional mullite-type structure. The disorder of the inter-chain groups results in a small unit cell for Ga4B2O9 compared with that for Al4B2O9, an ordered compound with a superstructure. By deconstructing the structure of Ga4B2O9, we were able to identify the fundamental building units and their linking rules which can be used to reconstruct the ordered and disordered structures. For Ga4B2O9, we found that the structure is intrinsically disordered within the ac plane, but ordered along the b axis. The three-dimensional structure can then be constructed by stacking the disordered ac sheets along the b axis (½ b) with a ½ a shift. The fundamental building units and exclusivity rules identified in this gallium borate mullite may also be useful for understanding other related mullite phases. Abstract: Benzo(a)pyrene is an important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) which causes carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects in various species and the level of contamination of this toxic agent in the marine environment is of great concern. In this study, metabolic responses induced by two doses (0.02 and 0.2μM) of BaP were characterized in the gill tissues of Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum after exposure for 24, 48 and 96h. The high dose (0.2μM) of BaP induced the disturbances in energy metabolism and osmotic regulation based on the metabolic biomarkers such as succinate, alanine, glucose, glycogen, branched chain amino acids, betaine, taurine, homarine, and dimethylamine in clam gills after 24h of exposure. In addition, hormesis induced by BaP was found in clams exposed to both doses of BaP. Overall, our results demonstrated the applicability of metabolomics for the elucidation of toxicological effects of marine environmental contaminants in a selected bioindicator species such as the Manila clam. Ba2La2MnW2O12, a new quaternary compound, was synthesized in reduced atmosphere (4% H2/Ar) at 1200 °C. The manganese and tungsten ions are, respectively Mn(II) and W(VI) as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and magnetic susceptibility. Ba2La2MnW2O12 is isostructural with Ba2La2ZnW2O12, crystallizing in rhombohedral symmetry (R&3macr;m), a=5.7276(3) Å, c=27.393(2) Å. The structure can be described as close-packed [AO3] arrays in a sequence of (hcch)3, wherein the Mn(II) and W(VI) cations occupy the octahedral sites in three of every four layers. Within the perovskite blocks the Mn(II) layer is sandwiched and isolated by two W(VI) layers, thus Ba2La2MnW2O12 behaves as a paramagnet down to low temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Yb26B12O57, a rare earth oxyborate previously assigned as Yb3BO6, has been studied by various techniques including neutron and X-ray diffraction, 11B NMR spectroscopy, electron diffraction and high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM). It crystallizes in the space group C2/m with cell parameters of a =24.5780(4)Å, b =3.58372(5)Å, c =14.3128(3)Å and β=115.079(1)°. The structure consists of slabs of rare earth sesquioxide and borate groups. The sesquioxide part is identified from the structural refinement, and is observed from HADDF-STEM image, while elucidation of borate groups is not straightforward. An additional oxygen atom (O31), which links two B2O5 groups into a B4O11 polyanion, is identified from the analysis of neutron diffraction data. The occupancy of this oxygen site is only quarter, which results in a random distribution of B4O11 and B2O5 groups along the b-direction. The chemical formula of ytterbium oxyborate is Yb26(BO3)4(B2O5)2(B4O11)O24, instead of the simple stoichiometric formula Yb3BO6. This compound is paramagnetic but its susceptibility deviated from the Curie–Weiss law at low temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A powder sample of Sr3FeMoO7 was synthesized by solid-state reaction in reduced atmosphere (5% H2/Ar). At room temperature, Sr3FeMoO7 crystallizes in a typical Ruddlesden–Popper structure in the space group I4/mmm, and . The structure refinement indicates that the Fe and Mo ions are randomly distributed in a single B-site with small fraction of B-site and oxygen vacancies. At low temperature, long-range magnetic interaction was observed. The antiferromagnetic magnetic interaction can be described with a large unit cell, and , in the magnetic space group An′. Abstract: A quaternary phase, Ba3La3Mn2W3O18, was synthesized in reduced atmosphere (5% H2/Ar) at 1200°C and characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution TEM. Ba3La3Mn2W3O18 crystallizes in rhombohedral space group with the cell parameters, and , and can be attributed to the member in the B-site deficient perovskite family, AnBn −1O3 n . The structure can be described as close-packed [La/BaO3] arrays in the sequence of , wherein the B-site cations, W and Mn, occupy five octahedral layers in every six octahedral layers, which leave a vacant octahedral layers separating the 5-layer perovskite blocks. The B-cation layers in the perovskite block alternate along the c-axis in a sequence of W6+–Mn2+–W5+–Mn2+–W6+. The bond valence calculation and optical reflection spectrum confirm the presence of W5+. This compound behaves paramagnetically in wide temperature range and weak antiferromagnetic interaction only occurs at low temperatures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Water soluble Gd-based metallofullerenes have potential application as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent due to its higher proton relaxivities and lower toxicity. In this Letter, we have investigated the structural and electronic properties of Gd@C60, which is the most abundantly produced Gd-based metallofullerene in carbon arc process, by using all-electron relativistic density functional theory. It is found that the Gd3+ ion is bonded to a hexagonal ring of C60 by electrostatic interaction. The total spin multiplicity of Gd@C60 is S =7. The Gd atomic orbitals are hybridized with the C60 molecular orbitals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Graphene is a favorable candidate for electrodes of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Graphene has quite a high work function of ∼4.5 eV, and has been extensively studied when used as anodes of OLEDs. In order to use graphene as a cathode, the electron injection barrier between the graphene cathode and the electron transport layer has to be low enough. Using 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen):Cs 2 CO 3 to n-dope graphene is a very good method, but the electron injection barrier between the n-doped graphene and Bphen:Cs 2 CO 3 is still too high to be ∼1.0 eV. In this work, in order to further reduce the electron injection barrier, a novel method is suggested. On the graphene cathode, a Sm layer with a lot of nano-hollows, and subsequently a layer of Bphen:Cs 2 CO 3 , are deposited. The Bphen:Cs 2 CO 3 can n-dope graphene in the nano-hollows, and the Fermi level of the graphene rises. The nano Sm layer is very easily oxidized. Oxygen adsorbed on the surface of graphene may react with Sm to form an O - -Sm + dipole layer. On the areas of the Sm oxide dipole layer without nano-hollows, the electron injection barrier can be further lowered by the dipole layer. Electrons tend to mainly inject through the lower electron barrier where the dipole layer exists. Based on this idea, an effective inverted small molecular OLED with the structure of graphene/1 nm Sm layer with a lot of nano-hollows/Bphen:Cs 2 CO 3 /Alq 3 :C545T/NPB/MoO 3 /Al is presented. The maximum current efficiency and maximum power efficiency of the OLED with a 1 nm Sm layer are about two and three times of those of the reference OLED without any Sm layer, respectively.

Background: Considerable studies showed that tumor suppressor phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) deleted on chromosome 10 is a major tumor suppressor, which inhibits cell proliferation through inactivation of the PI3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt signal pathway. In many human tumors, there is loss of function or mutations in PTEN. In our previous study, it was found that Akt activity in psoriatic lesions increased compared with that in normal controls. However, the expression of PTEN and the correlation between PTEN and PI3K/Akt have not been investigated in patients with psoriasis., Materials and Methods: Skin tissue samples were obtained from 18 patients with psoriasis and 19 healthy controls. The expressions of PTEN were measured with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry., Results: Quantitative RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that the mRNA levels of PTEN in psoriatic lesions were decreased in comparison with that in normal skin. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry analysis of PTEN showed that PTEN protein was lowly expressed in psoriatic lesions compared with that in normal controls, which suggested that the reduction of PTEN mRNA expression leads to decreased PTEN protein levels., Conclusions: The downregulation of PTEN expressions may play a role in the overactivation of the PI3K/Akt pathway in psoriatic lesions and correlate with the hyperproliferation of psoriatic keratinocytes., (© 2013 The International Society of Dermatology.)

Heat shock 70 kDa protein 12A (HSPA12A) is an atypical member of HSP70 family, and the translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) is a novel HSP with chaperone-like activity. They are both involved in protecting organisms against various stressors. In the present study, the cDNAs of HSPA12A and TCTP (called MgHSPA12A and MgTCTP) were identified from Mytilus galloprovincialis by RACE approaches. The full-length cDNA of MgHSPA12A and MgTCTP encoded a peptide of 491 and 171 amino acids, respectively. Real-time PCR was employed to analyze the tissue distribution and temporal expression of these two genes after bacterial challenge and cadmium (Cd) exposure. It was found that the transcripts of MgHSPA12A and MgTCTP were dominantly expressed in gonad and muscle, respectively. The expression level of MgTCTP at 48 h post Vibrio anguillarum challenge was detected to be significantly up-regulated in hepatopancreas (P < 0.05). As concerned to Cd exposure, 2.0-fold increase of MgHSPA12A expression compared to that of the control was observed at 48 h in 5 μg/L Cd(2+)-treated group, while the expression levels of MgTCTP were significantly decreased after exposed to both 5 and 50 μg/L Cd(2+) for 24 h and 96 h. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are phase II enzymes that facilitate the detoxification of xenobiotics, and also play important roles in antioxidant defense. In this study, we reported the cloning and molecular characteristics of seven genes of the GST family (VpGSTS1, VpGSTS2, VpGSTS3, VpGSTO, VpGSTMi, VpGSTM and VpGSTR) from Venerupis philippinarum together with mRNA tissue distribution patterns and temporal expression profiles in response to cadmium, copper and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) exposures. The deduced amino acid sequences of VpGSTs showed high similarities to counterparts of other species that clustered into the same clades in the phylogenetic analysis. At basal levels of tissue expression, most VpGSTs were highly expressed in hepatopancreas compared with other tissues. All VpGSTs showed differential response profiles depending on the concentrations of various toxicants and exposure times. More notably, the expressions of VpGSTS2 and VpGSTS3 transcripts were significantly up-regulated in hepatopancreas from Cu and B[a]P-exposed animals, indicating that these two sigma VpGSTs were highly sensitive to Cu and B[a]P exposure. However, the expressions of VpGSTM and VpGSTR were significantly induced by Cu or B[a]P exposure, respectively. These findings suggested the role of VpGSTS2, VpGSTS3, VpGSTM and VpGSTR in defense against oxidative stress and highlighted their potential as biomarkers to Cu or B[a]P exposure., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Polychaetes have often been utilized as indicator species to investigate the impacts of pollutants, such as heavy metals. The uptake of Cd by the polychaete Nereis diversicolor was determined at varying Ca concentrations and with pre-exposure to Ca ion channel blockers and metabolic inhibitors in simulated sea water over 1 week period. The supply of Ca in simulated sea water inhibited Cd uptake and increased Ca concentration in N. diversicolor after 10 μM Cd exposure. Pre-exposure to a Ca-channel blocker (Lanthanum) significantly inhibited Cd uptake, suggesting that the uptake of Cd was exerted at a Ca channel. N-ethylmaleimide, which specifically binds to sulfhydryl groups, inhibited Cd uptake at 10 μM, implying that the transport of Cd is carrier-mediated by proteins or other SH-containing compounds. Subcellular Cd distribution analysis showed that more than 60% of the total Cd associated with the cytosolic fraction. The presence of higher concentration of Ca in simulated sea water did not impact the proportional subcellular distribution of Cd in N. diversicolor. Nevertheless, the supply of Ca could significantly lower Cd concentration in cytosol and cellular debris. The present study provides evidence that Cd transport by N. diversicolor was mediated mainly through lanthanum- sensitive Ca ion channels and accumulated by SH-containing compounds. These results help to understand the uptake mechanism and subcellular distribution of Cd in polychaetes.

Cadmium is a non-essential element to living organisms and has become the severe contaminant in both seawater and sediment in the intertidal zones of the Bohai Sea. The halophyte, Suaeda salsa is the pioneer plant in the intertidal zones of Bohai Sea and has been widely applied in environmental sciences. In this study, the dose- and time-dependent effects induced by environmentally relevant concentrations (2, 10 and 50 μg l(-1)) of cadmium were characterized in S. salsa using NMR-based metabolomics. The levels of amino acids (valine, leucine, glutamate, tyrosine, etc.), carbohydrates (glucose, sucrose and fructose), intermediates of tricarboxylic acid cycle (succinate, citrate, etc.) and osmolyte (betaine) were altered in the S. salsa samples after cadmium exposures. These metabolic biomarkers indicated the elevated protein degradation and disturbances in the osmotic regulation and energy metabolism caused by cadmium in S. salsa. Overall, our results demonstrated the applicability of NMR-based metabolomics for the detection of metabolic biomarkers that could be used for the interpretation of toxicological effects induced by contaminants in the pioneer plant S. salsa in the intertidal zones. In addition, the metabolic biomarkers could be potentially useful for the bio-monitoring of contaminants in the intertidal zones.

Copper is an important heavy metal contaminant with high ecological risk in the Bohai Sea. In this study, the metabolic responses in the bioindicator, Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), to the environmentally relevant copper exposures were characterized using NMR-based metabolomics. The significant metabolic changes corresponding to copper exposures were related to osmolytes, intermediates of the Krebs cycle and amino acids, such as the increase in homarine, branched chain amino acids and decrease in succinate, alanine and dimethylamine in the copper-exposed clam gills during 96 h exposure period. Overall, Cu may lead to the disturbances in osmotic regulation and energy metabolism in clams during 96 h experimental period. These results demonstrate that NMR-based metabolomics is applicable for the discovery of metabolic biomarkers which could be used to elucidate the toxicological mechanisms of marine heavy metal contaminants., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The controllable deformation of nanopores was realized by moving a convergent electron beam in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. Nanostructures with the desired geometries were successfully fabricated from the original nanopores in 100 nm-thick and 260 nm-thick Si(3)N(4) membranes. The formation dynamics is a competition process between the knock-on effect of the high-energy electron beam and surface tension driven shrinkage. This approach can be used to finely tune critical dimensions and deform nanopores to particular desired geometries with single-nanometer precision, which offers substantial opportunities in flexibly fabricating nanostructures for various applications such as nanoelectronics and nanofluidics.

Mercury is a hazardous pollutant in the Bohai marine environments due to its high toxicity to the marine organisms and subsequent ecological risk. Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum is one of important sentinel organisms in 'Mussel Watch Program' launched in China and therefore used as a bioindicator in marine and coastal ecotoxicology. There are dominantly distributed three pedigrees of clam (White, Liangdao Red and Zebra) in Yantai population endowed with different tolerances to environmental stressors. In this study, gill tissues were collected from both untreated and mercury exposed White, Liangdao Red and Zebra clams, and the extracts were analyzed by NMR-based metabolomics to compare the original metabolomes and the toxicological effects induced by mercury exposure in three pedigrees. The major abundant metabolites in White clam sample were branched-chain amino acids, lactate, alanine, arginine, acetoacetate, glutamate, succinate, citrate, malonate and taurine, while the metabolite profile of Liangdao Red clam sample comprises relative high levels of alanine, arginine, glutamate, succinate and glycogen. For Zebra clam sample, the metabolite profile exhibited relatively high amount of aspartate, acetylcholine and homarine. After 48 h exposure of 20 μg l(-1) Hg(2+), the metabolic profiles from all the three pedigrees of clams commonly showed significant increases in alanine, arginine, glutamate, aspartate, α-ketoglutarate, glycine and ATP/ADP, and decreases in citrate, taurine and homarine. The unique metabolic differences between the metabolomes of gill tissues from Hg(2+)-exposed White, Liangdao Red and Zebra clams were found, including elevated acetylcholine and branched-chain amino acids in White clams, and the declined succinate in both White and Liangdao Red samples as well as the declined betaine in Zebra and White clams. Overall, our findings showed the differential toxicological responses to mercury exposure and that White clams could be a preferable bioindicator for the metal pollution monitoring based on the metabolic changes from gill compared with other two (Liangdao Red and Zebra) pedigrees of clams.

Mn-doped ZnO nanobelts have been synthesized via the vapor phase evaporation method, which exhibited ferromagnetism at room temperature. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the chemical state of Mn dopants. It revealed that the Mn species had the chemical valence of +2. Meanwhile, the fine structures of the Mn L(23) edges indicated that the Mn dopant was located at the center of an oxygen octahedron but not an oxygen tetrahedron. This suggested that the Mn dopants did not substitute on the Zn sites as expected and sub-nanoscale MnO clusters had been formed in the synthesized ZnO nanobelts.

Large single crystals of oxygen-deficient Sr6Co5O(15-delta) compounds, i.e., Sr6Co5O14.70 and Sr6Co4.9Ni0.1O14.36, were obtained by using K2CO3 flux in the presence of additives of transition metal oxides. The single-crystal structure determination shows that the structures of Sr6Co5O14.70 and Sr6Co4.9Ni0.1O14.36 crystallize in the space group R and can be described as one-dimensional face-sharing CoO3 polyhedral chains and Sr cation chains. Unlike the other known 2H-perovskite-related oxides in which the polyhedral chains consist of octahedra (Oh) and trigonal prism (TP), the structure of Sr6Co5O14.70 and Sr6Co4.9Ni0.1O14.36 contain Oh and intermediate polyhedra (IP) and can be attributed to a general structure formula A6A'2B3O(15-delta), which is closely related to the known A6A'B4O15 phases by shifting of a B atom and the O3 triangle along the c axis. Further study on O3 reveals that this oxygen position splits into two independent positions, corresponding to polyhedral geometry of IP and TP, respectively. Therefore, the polyhedral chain in the structure should be more precisely described as a random composite of the 4Oh + TP and 3Oh + 2IP. This model is used to interpret the magnetic properties, although not quantitatively. The 4-D structure analysis was also conducted for both Sr6Co5O14.70 and Sr6Co4.9Ni0.1O14.36 with a commensurate modulated structure in a 4-D superspace group, R3m(00gamma)0s, gamma = p/k = 3/5. By considering the same 4-D superspace group R3m(00gamma)0s but different t-phases, one can understand the structure relationship between Sr6Co5O14.70 and Sr6Rh5O15.

Two solid solutions, La4Cu(3-x)Zn(x)MoO12 (0.05 < or = x < or = 0.20, SS1) and La4Cu(3-x)Zn(x)MoO12 (0.30 < or = x < or = 2.40, SS2), were synthesized at ambient pressure and at temperatures from 1025 to 1200 degrees C by traditional solid-state reactions. Their structures were determined from X-ray powder diffraction with the help of electron and neutron diffraction. The atomic arrangements of SS1 and SS2 are similar, but their space groups are different, Pmnm for SS1 and P-1 for SS2, respectively. The copper, zinc, and molybdenum are coordinated by oxygen in corner-sharing trigonal bipyramids that are sandwiched between layers of lanthanum cations. In the transition metal cations layer of SS2, the copper and zinc cations order into a Kagomé-like lattice of triangular clusters. The magnetism has been measured from 2 to 300 K and is highly influenced by the geometric arrangement of the Cu(II) and Zn(II) cations. The number of free electrons per three Cu atoms is close to one for all samples in SS1 and SS2 indicating that the system can be well expressed by independent Cu(II)3 clusters. Spontaneous magnetization was observed in the system.

A new anhydrous aluminoborate Al4B6O15 (PKU-5) has been synthesized in a boric acid flux in a closed system at 350 degrees C. PKU-5, which crystallizes in the space group R3 with the lattice constants a=11.43398(9) and c=6.48307(5) A, consists of Al octahedra and triangularly coordinated boron. The Al octahedron adopts the (10,3)-a network, in which each octahedron shares three edges with the neighboring octahedra forming ten-membered-ring channels. The octahedral backbone in PKU-5 can be considered as a primary octahedral framework topology and, setting out from the structures of the aluminoborates (PKU-1 and PKU-5), we propose construction rules for the octahedral frameworks. There are two types of connections for edge-sharing octahedra in porous frameworks, trans and cis type, by which various microporous octahedral frameworks of different topologies can be constructed. The borate groups share oxygens with the Al octahedral frameworks forming two kinds of three-membered-ring units consisting of two octahedra and one triangle (2Al+B) and one octahedron and two triangles (Al+2B), respectively.
