Federated Learning (FL) is a promising distributed learning approach that enables multiple clients to collaboratively train a shared global model. However, recent studies show that FL is vulnerable to various poisoning attacks, which can degrade the performance of global models or introduce backdoors into them. In this paper, we first conduct a comprehensive study on prior FL attacks and detection methods. The results show that all existing detection methods are only effective against limited and specific attacks. Most detection methods suffer from high false positives, which lead to significant performance degradation, especially in not independent and identically distributed (non-IID) settings. To address these issues, we propose FLTracer, the first FL attack provenance framework to accurately detect various attacks and trace the attack time, objective, type, and poisoned location of updates. Different from existing methodologies that rely solely on cross-client anomaly detection, we propose a Kalman filter-based cross-round detection to identify adversaries by seeking the behavior changes before and after the attack. Thus, this makes it resilient to data heterogeneity and is effective even in non-IID settings. To further improve the accuracy of our detection method, we employ four novel features and capture their anomalies with the joint decisions. Extensive evaluations show that FLTracer achieves an average true positive rate of over $96.88\%$ at an average false positive rate of less than $2.67\%$, significantly outperforming SOTA detection methods. \footnote{Code is available at \url{https://github.com/Eyr3/FLTracer}.}, Comment: 18 pages, 27 figures

Correlated oxides and related heterostructures are intriguing for developing future multifunctional devices by exploiting their exotic properties, but their integration with other materials, especially on Si-based platforms, is challenging. Here, van der Waals heterostructures of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO), a correlated manganite perovskite, and MoS$_2$ are demonstrated on Si substrates with multiple functions. To overcome the problems due to the incompatible growth process, technologies involving freestanding LSMO membranes and van der Waals force-mediated transfer are used to fabricate the LSMO-MoS$_2$ heterostructures. The LSMO-MoS$_2$ heterostructures exhibit a gate-tunable rectifying behavior, based on which metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) with on-off ratios of over 104 can be achieved. The LSMO-MoS$_2$ heterostructures can function as photodiodes displaying considerable open-circuit voltages and photocurrents. In addition, the colossal magnetoresistance of LSMO endows the LSMO-MoS$_2$ heterostructures with an electrically tunable magnetoresponse at room temperature. This work not only proves the applicability of the LSMO-MoS$_2$ heterostructure devices on Si-based platform but also demonstrates a paradigm to create multifunctional heterostructures from materials with disparate properties.

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit positional bias in how they use context, which especially complicates listwise ranking. To address this, we propose permutation self-consistency, a form of self-consistency over ranking list outputs of black-box LLMs. Our key idea is to marginalize out different list orders in the prompt to produce an order-independent ranking with less positional bias. First, given some input prompt, we repeatedly shuffle the list in the prompt and pass it through the LLM while holding the instructions the same. Next, we aggregate the resulting sample of rankings by computing the central ranking closest in distance to all of them, marginalizing out prompt order biases in the process. Theoretically, we prove the robustness of our method, showing convergence to the true ranking in the presence of random perturbations. Empirically, on five list-ranking datasets in sorting and passage reranking, our approach improves scores from conventional inference by up to 7-18% for GPT-3.5 and 8-16% for LLaMA v2 (70B), surpassing the previous state of the art in passage reranking. Radar has stronger adaptability in adverse scenarios for autonomous driving environmental perception compared to widely adopted cameras and LiDARs. Compared with commonly used 3D radars, the latest 4D radars have precise vertical resolution and higher point cloud density, making it a highly promising sensor for autonomous driving in complex environmental perception. However, due to the much higher noise than LiDAR, manufacturers choose different filtering strategies, resulting in an inverse ratio between noise level and point cloud density. There is still a lack of comparative analysis on which method is beneficial for deep learning-based perception algorithms in autonomous driving. One of the main reasons is that current datasets only adopt one type of 4D radar, making it difficult to compare different 4D radars in the same scene. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel large-scale multi-modal dataset featuring, for the first time, two types of 4D radars captured simultaneously. This dataset enables further research into effective 4D radar perception algorithms.Our dataset consists of 151 consecutive series, most of which last 20 seconds and contain 10,007 meticulously synchronized and annotated frames. Moreover, our dataset captures a variety of challenging driving scenarios, including many road conditions, weather conditions, nighttime and daytime with different lighting intensities and periods. Our dataset annotates consecutive frames, which can be applied to 3D object detection and tracking, and also supports the study of multi-modal tasks. The Central Pattern Generator (CPG) is adept at generating rhythmic gait patterns characterized by consistent timing and adequate foot clearance. Yet, its open-loop configuration often compromises the system's control performance in response to environmental variations. On the other hand, Reinforcement Learning (RL), celebrated for its model-free properties, has gained significant traction in robotics due to its inherent adaptability and robustness. However, initiating traditional RL approaches from the ground up presents computational challenges and a heightened risk of converging to suboptimal local minima. In this paper, we propose an innovative quadruped locomotion framework, SYNLOCO, by synthesizing CPG and RL that can ingeniously integrate the strengths of both methods, enabling the development of a locomotion controller that is both stable and natural. Furthermore, we introduce a set of performance-driven reward metrics that augment the learning of locomotion control. To optimize the learning trajectory of SYNLOCO, a two-phased training strategy is presented. Our empirical evaluation, conducted on a Unitree GO1 robot under varied conditions--including distinct velocities, terrains, and payload capacities--showcases SYNLOCO's ability to produce consistent and clear-footed gaits across diverse scenarios. In the field of global optimization, many existing algorithms face challenges posed by non-convex target functions and high computational complexity or unavailability of gradient information. These limitations, exacerbated by sensitivity to initial conditions, often lead to suboptimal solutions or failed convergence. This is true even for Metaheuristic algorithms designed to amalgamate different optimization techniques to improve their efficiency and robustness. To address these challenges, we develop a sequence of multidimensional integration-based methods that we show to converge to the global optima under some mild regularity conditions. Our probabilistic approach does not require the use of gradients and is underpinned by a mathematically rigorous convergence framework anchored in the nuanced properties of nascent optima distribution. In order to alleviate the problem of multidimensional integration, we develop a latent slice sampler that enjoys a geometric rate of convergence in generating samples from the nascent optima distribution, which is used to approximate the global optima. The proposed Probabilistic Global Optimizer (ProGO) provides a scalable unified framework to approximate the global optima of any continuous function defined on a domain of arbitrary dimension. Empirical illustrations of ProGO across a variety of popular non-convex test functions (having finite global optima) reveal that the proposed algorithm outperforms, by order of magnitude, many existing state-of-the-art methods, including gradient-based, zeroth-order gradient-free, and some Bayesian Optimization methods, in term regret value and speed of convergence. It is, however, to be noted that our approach may not be suitable for functions that are expensive to compute.

To reduce the dimensionality of the functional covariate, functional principal component analysis plays a key role, however, there is uncertainty on the number of principal components. Model averaging addresses this uncertainty by taking a weighted average of the prediction obtained from a set of candidate models. In this paper, we develop an optimal model averaging approach that selects the weights by minimizing a $K$-fold cross-validation criterion. We prove the asymptotic optimality of the selected weights in terms of minimizing the excess final prediction error, which greatly improves the usual asymptotic optimality in terms of minimizing the final prediction error in the literature. When the true regression relationship belongs to the set of candidate models, we provide the consistency of the averaged estimators. Although the majority of recent autonomous driving systems concentrate on developing perception methods based on ego-vehicle sensors, there is an overlooked alternative approach that involves leveraging intelligent roadside cameras to help extend the ego-vehicle perception ability beyond the visual range. We discover that most existing monocular 3D object detectors rely on the ego-vehicle prior assumption that the optical axis of the camera is parallel to the ground. However, the roadside camera is installed on a pole with a pitched angle, which makes the existing methods not optimal for roadside scenes. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for Roadside Monocular 3D object detection with ground-aware embeddings, named MonoGAE. Specifically, the ground plane is a stable and strong prior knowledge due to the fixed installation of cameras in roadside scenarios. In order to reduce the domain gap between the ground geometry information and high-dimensional image features, we employ a supervised training paradigm with a ground plane to predict high-dimensional ground-aware embeddings. These embeddings are subsequently integrated with image features through cross-attention mechanisms. Furthermore, to improve the detector's robustness to the divergences in cameras' installation poses, we replace the ground plane depth map with a novel pixel-level refined ground plane equation map. Our approach demonstrates a substantial performance advantage over all previous monocular 3D object detectors on widely recognized 3D detection benchmarks for roadside cameras. While most recent autonomous driving system focuses on developing perception methods on ego-vehicle sensors, people tend to overlook an alternative approach to leverage intelligent roadside cameras to extend the perception ability beyond the visual range. We discover that the state-of-the-art vision-centric bird's eye view detection methods have inferior performances on roadside cameras. This is because these methods mainly focus on recovering the depth regarding the camera center, where the depth difference between the car and the ground quickly shrinks while the distance increases. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, dubbed BEVHeight++, to address this issue. In essence, we regress the height to the ground to achieve a distance-agnostic formulation to ease the optimization process of camera-only perception methods. By incorporating both height and depth encoding techniques, we achieve a more accurate and robust projection from 2D to BEV spaces. On popular 3D detection benchmarks of roadside cameras, our method surpasses all previous vision-centric methods by a significant margin. In terms of the ego-vehicle scenario, our BEVHeight++ possesses superior over depth-only methods. Specifically, it yields a notable improvement of +1.9% NDS and +1.1% mAP over BEVDepth when evaluated on the nuScenes validation set. This paper presents the design of a 6-DOF all-terrain micro aerial vehicle and two control strategies for multimodal flight, which are experimentally validated. The micro aerial vehicle is propelled by four motors and controlled by a single servo for the control of the cycloidal rotors(cyclorotors) speed and lift direction. Despite the addition of the servo, the system remains underactuated. To address the traditional underactuation problem of cycloidal rotor aircraft, we increase the number of control variables. We propose a PID and a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework to tackle the model's nonlinearities and achieve control of attitude, position, and their derivatives.Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multimodal control strategy for 6-DOF all-terrain micro aerial vehicles. The vehicle can operate in aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic modes and can adapt to different terrains and environmental conditions. Our approach enhances the vehicle's performance in each mode of operation, and the results show the advantages of the proposed strategy compared to other control strategies.

Few-shot object detection aims at detecting novel categories given a few example images. Recent methods focus on finetuning strategies, with complicated procedures that prohibit a wider application. In this paper, we introduce DE-ViT, a few-shot object detector without the need for finetuning. DE-ViT's novel architecture is based on a new region-propagation mechanism for localization. The propagated region masks are transformed into bounding boxes through a learnable spatial integral layer. Instead of training prototype classifiers, we propose to use prototypes to project ViT features into a subspace that is robust to overfitting on base classes. We evaluate DE-ViT on few-shot, and one-shot object detection benchmarks with Pascal VOC, COCO, and LVIS. DE-ViT establishes new state-of-the-art results on all benchmarks. Notably, for COCO, DE-ViT surpasses the few-shot SoTA by 15 mAP on 10-shot and 7.2 mAP on 30-shot and one-shot SoTA by 2.8 AP50. For LVIS, DE-ViT outperforms few-shot SoTA by 20 box APr.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) has emerged as a valuable diagnostic tool for cardiac diseases. However, a limitation of CMR is its slow imaging speed, which causes patient discomfort and introduces artifacts in the images. There has been growing interest in deep learning-based CMR imaging algorithms that can reconstruct high-quality images from highly under-sampled k-space data. However, the development of deep learning methods requires large training datasets, which have not been publicly available for CMR. To address this gap, we released a dataset that includes multi-contrast, multi-view, multi-slice and multi-coil CMR imaging data from 300 subjects. Imaging studies include cardiac cine and mapping sequences. Manual segmentations of the myocardium and chambers of all the subjects are also provided within the dataset. Scripts of state-of-the-art reconstruction algorithms were also provided as a point of reference. Our aim is to facilitate the advancement of state-of-the-art CMR image reconstruction by introducing standardized evaluation criteria and making the dataset freely accessible to the research community. Various mobile applications that comprise dependent tasks are gaining widespread popularity and are increasingly complex. These applications often have low-latency requirements, resulting in a significant surge in demand for computing resources. With the emergence of mobile edge computing (MEC), it becomes the most significant issue to offload the application tasks onto small-scale devices deployed at the edge of the mobile network for obtaining a high-quality user experience. However, since the environment of MEC is dynamic, most existing works focusing on task graph offloading, which rely heavily on expert knowledge or accurate analytical models, fail to fully adapt to such environmental changes, resulting in the reduction of user experience. This paper investigates the task graph offloading in MEC, considering the time-varying computation capabilities of edge computing devices. To adapt to environmental changes, we model the task graph scheduling for computation offloading as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). Then, we design a deep reinforcement learning algorithm (SATA-DRL) to learn the task scheduling strategy from the interaction with the environment, to improve user experience. The goal of low-light image enhancement is to restore the color and details of the image and is of great significance for high-level visual tasks in autonomous driving. However, it is difficult to restore the lost details in the dark area by relying only on the RGB domain. In this paper we introduce frequency as a new clue into the network and propose a novel DCT-driven enhancement transformer (DEFormer). First, we propose a learnable frequency branch (LFB) for frequency enhancement contains DCT processing and curvature-based frequency enhancement (CFE). CFE calculates the curvature of each channel to represent the detail richness of different frequency bands, then we divides the frequency features, which focuses on frequency bands with richer textures. In addition, we propose a cross domain fusion (CDF) for reducing the differences between the RGB domain and the frequency domain. We also adopt DEFormer as a preprocessing in dark detection, DEFormer effectively improves the performance of the detector, bringing 2.1% and 3.4% improvement in ExDark and DARK FACE datasets on mAP respectively., Comment: submit to ICRA2024

In the field of unsupervised feature selection, sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) methods have attracted more and more attention recently. Compared to spectral-based methods, SPCA methods don't rely on the construction of a similarity matrix and show better feature selection ability on real-world data. The original SPCA formulates a nonconvex optimization problem. Existing convex SPCA methods reformulate SPCA as a convex model by regarding the reconstruction matrix as an optimization variable. However, they are lack of constraints equivalent to the orthogonality restriction in SPCA, leading to larger solution space. In this paper, it's proved that the optimal solution to a convex SPCA model falls onto the Positive Semidefinite (PSD) cone. A standard convex SPCA-based model with PSD constraint for unsupervised feature selection is proposed. Further, a two-step fast optimization algorithm via PSD projection is presented to solve the proposed model. Two other existing convex SPCA-based models are also proven to have their solutions optimized on the PSD cone in this paper. Therefore, the PSD versions of these two models are proposed to accelerate their convergence as well. We also provide a regularization parameter setting strategy for our proposed method. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Federated learning (FL) is a privacy-preserving paradigm for collaboratively training a global model from decentralized clients. However, the performance of FL is hindered by non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data and device heterogeneity. In this work, we revisit this key challenge through the lens of gradient conflicts on the server side. Specifically, we first investigate the gradient conflict phenomenon among multiple clients and reveal that stronger heterogeneity leads to more severe gradient conflicts. To tackle this issue, we propose FedGH, a simple yet effective method that mitigates local drifts through Gradient Harmonization. This technique projects one gradient vector onto the orthogonal plane of the other within conflicting client pairs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FedGH consistently enhances multiple state-of-the-art FL baselines across diverse benchmarks and non-IID scenarios. Notably, FedGH yields more significant improvements in scenarios with stronger heterogeneity. As a plug-and-play module, FedGH can be seamlessly integrated into any FL framework without requiring hyperparameter tuning.

Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and GPT-4, are versatile and can solve different tasks due to their emergent ability and generalizability. However, LLMs sometimes lack domain-specific knowledge to perform tasks, which would also cause hallucination during inference. In some previous works, additional modules like graph neural networks (GNNs) are trained on retrieved knowledge from external knowledge bases, aiming to mitigate the problem of lacking domain-specific knowledge. However, incorporating additional modules: 1) would need retraining additional modules when encountering novel domains; 2) would become a bottleneck since LLMs' strong abilities are not fully utilized for retrieval. In this paper, we propose a paradigm, termed Knowledge Solver (KSL), to teach LLMs to search for essential knowledge from external knowledge bases by harnessing their own strong generalizability. Specifically, we design a simple yet effective prompt to transform retrieval into a multi-hop decision sequence, which empowers LLMs with searching knowledge ability in zero-shot manner. Additionally, KSL is able to provide complete retrieval paths and therefore increase explainability of LLMs' reasoning processes. We conduct experiments on three datasets: CommonsenseQA, OpenbookQA, and MedQA-USMLE, and found that our approach improves LLM baseline performance by a relatively large margin.

The pre-training task is indispensable for the text-to-image person re-identification (T2I-ReID) task. However, there are two underlying inconsistencies between these two tasks that may impact the performance; i) Data inconsistency. A large domain gap exists between the generic images/texts used in public pre-trained models and the specific person data in the T2I-ReID task. This gap is especially severe for texts, as general textual data are usually unable to describe specific people in fine-grained detail. ii) Training inconsistency. The processes of pre-training of images and texts are independent, despite cross-modality learning being critical to T2I-ReID. To address the above issues, we present a new unified pre-training pipeline (UniPT) designed specifically for the T2I-ReID task. We first build a large-scale text-labeled person dataset "LUPerson-T", in which pseudo-textual descriptions of images are automatically generated by the CLIP paradigm using a divide-conquer-combine strategy. Benefiting from this dataset, we then utilize a simple vision-and-language pre-training framework to explicitly align the feature space of the image and text modalities during pre-training. In this way, the pre-training task and the T2I-ReID task are made consistent with each other on both data and training levels. Without the need for any bells and whistles, our UniPT achieves competitive Rank-1 accuracy of, ie, 68.50%, 60.09%, and 51.85% on CUHK-PEDES, ICFG-PEDES and RSTPReid, respectively. To consider model uncertainty in global Fr\'{e}chet regression and improve density response prediction, we propose a frequentist model averaging method. The weights are chosen by minimizing a cross-validation criterion based on Wasserstein distance. In the cases where all candidate models are misspecified, we prove that the corresponding model averaging estimator has asymptotic optimality, achieving the lowest possible Wasserstein distance. When there are correctly specified candidate models, we prove that our method asymptotically assigns all weights to the correctly specified models. Numerical results of extensive simulations and a real data analysis on intracerebral hemorrhage data strongly favour our method.

Language models (LMs) have revolutionized the way we interact with information, but they often generate nonfactual text, raising concerns about their reliability. Previous methods use external knowledge as references for text generation to enhance factuality but often struggle with the knowledge mix-up(e.g., entity mismatch) of irrelevant references. Besides,as the length of the output text grows, the randomness of sampling can escalate, detrimentally impacting the factual accuracy of the generated text. In this paper, we present DKGen, which divide the text generation process into an iterative process. In each iteration, DKGen takes the input query, the previously generated text and a subset of the reference passages as input to generate short text. During the process, the subset is dynamically selected from the full passage set based on their relevance to the previously generated text and the query, largely eliminating the irrelevant references from input. To further enhance DKGen's ability to correctly use these external knowledge, DKGen distills the relevance order of reference passages to the cross-attention distribution of decoder. Multi-modal fusion is increasingly being used for autonomous driving tasks, as different modalities provide unique information for feature extraction. However, the existing two-stream networks are only fused at a specific network layer, which requires a lot of manual attempts to set up. As the CNN goes deeper, the two modal features become more and more advanced and abstract, and the fusion occurs at the feature level with a large gap, which can easily hurt the performance. To reduce the loss of height and depth information during the process of projecting point clouds into 2D space, we utilize calibration parameters to project the point cloud into Altitude Difference Images (ADIs), which exhibit more distinct road features. In this study, we propose a novel fusion architecture called Skip-cross Networks (SkipcrossNets), which combine adaptively ADIs and camera images without being bound to a certain fusion epoch. Specifically, skip-cross fusion strategy connects each layer to each layer in a feed-forward manner, and for each layer, the feature maps of all previous layers are used as input and its own feature maps are used as input to all subsequent layers for the other modality, enhancing feature propagation and multi-modal features fusion. This strategy facilitates selection of the most similar feature layers from two modalities, enhancing feature reuse and providing complementary effects for sparse point cloud features. The advantages of skip-cross fusion strategy is demonstrated through application to the KITTI and A2D2 datasets, achieving a MaxF score of 96.85% on KITTI and an F1 score of 84.84% on A2D2. The model parameters require only 2.33 MB of memory at a speed of 68.24 FPS, which can be viable for mobile terminals and embedded devices.

The rise of large language models (LLMs) had a transformative impact on search, ushering in a new era of search engines that are capable of generating search results in natural language text, imbued with citations for supporting sources. Building generative information-seeking models demands openly accessible datasets, which currently remain lacking. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset, HAGRID (Human-in-the-loop Attributable Generative Retrieval for Information-seeking Dataset) for building end-to-end generative information-seeking models that are capable of retrieving candidate quotes and generating attributed explanations. Unlike recent efforts that focus on human evaluation of black-box proprietary search engines, we built our dataset atop the English subset of MIRACL, a publicly available information retrieval dataset. HAGRID is constructed based on human and LLM collaboration. We first automatically collect attributed explanations that follow an in-context citation style using an LLM, i.e. GPT-3.5. Next, we ask human annotators to evaluate the LLM explanations based on two criteria: informativeness and attributability. The language models, especially the basic text classification models, have been shown to be susceptible to textual adversarial attacks such as synonym substitution and word insertion attacks. To defend against such attacks, a growing body of research has been devoted to improving the model robustness. However, providing provable robustness guarantees instead of empirical robustness is still widely unexplored. In this paper, we propose Text-CRS, a generalized certified robustness framework for natural language processing (NLP) based on randomized smoothing. To our best knowledge, existing certified schemes for NLP can only certify the robustness against $\ell_0$ perturbations in synonym substitution attacks. Representing each word-level adversarial operation (i.e., synonym substitution, word reordering, insertion, and deletion) as a combination of permutation and embedding transformation, we propose novel smoothing theorems to derive robustness bounds in both permutation and embedding space against such adversarial operations. To further improve certified accuracy and radius, we consider the numerical relationships between discrete words and select proper noise distributions for the randomized smoothing. Finally, we conduct substantial experiments on multiple language models and datasets. Text-CRS can address all four different word-level adversarial operations and achieve a significant accuracy improvement. Increasing individuals' awareness of their own body signals can lead to improved interoception, enabling the brain to estimate current body states more accurately and in a timely manner. However, certain body signals, such as eye movements, often go unnoticed by individuals themselves. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that providing eye-movement-correlated tactile feedback on the body enhances individuals' awareness of their attentive states, subsequently improving attention. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of such feedback in redirecting and enhancing attention, particularly in the presence of distractions during long-duration tasks. Additionally, we observed that people's gaze behaviors changed in response to the tactile feedback, suggesting an increased self-awareness of current eye movements and attentive states. Ultimately, these changes in gaze behaviors contribute to the modulation of attentive states. Our findings highlight the potential of eye-movement-correlated bodily tactile feedback to increase individuals' self-awareness of their eye movements and attentive states. Single-frame infrared small target detection is considered to be a challenging task, due to the extreme imbalance between target and background, bounding box regression is extremely sensitive to infrared small target, and target information is easy to lose in the high-level semantic layer. In this article, we propose an enhancing feature learning network (EFLNet) to address these problems. First, we notice that there is an extremely imbalance between the target and the background in the infrared image, which makes the model pay more attention to the background features rather than target features. To address this problem, we propose a new adaptive threshold focal loss (ATFL) function that decouples the target and the background, and utilizes the adaptive mechanism to adjust the loss weight to force the model to allocate more attention to target features. Second, we introduce the normalized Gaussian Wasserstein distance (NWD) to alleviate the difficulty of convergence caused by the extreme sensitivity of the bounding box regression to infrared small target. Finally, we incorporate a dynamic head mechanism into the network to enable adaptive learning of the relative importance of each semantic layer. Experimental results demonstrate our method can achieve better performance in the detection performance of infrared small target compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep-learning-based methods. Motion planning is challenging for multiple robots in cluttered environments without communication, especially in view of real-time efficiency, motion safety, distributed computation, and trajectory optimality, etc. In this paper, a reinforced potential field method is developed for distributed multi-robot motion planning, which is a synthesized design of reinforcement learning and artificial potential fields. An observation embedding with a self-attention mechanism is presented to model the robot-robot and robot-environment interactions. A soft wall-following rule is developed to improve the trajectory smoothness. Our method belongs to reactive planning, but environment properties are implicitly encoded. The total amount of robots in our method can be scaled up to any number. The performance improvement over a vanilla APF and RL method has been demonstrated via numerical simulations. Unsupervised localization and segmentation are long-standing robot vision challenges that describe the critical ability for an autonomous robot to learn to decompose images into individual objects without labeled data. These tasks are important because of the limited availability of dense image manual annotation and the promising vision of adapting to an evolving set of object categories in lifelong learning. Most recent methods focus on using visual appearance continuity as object cues by spatially clustering features obtained from self-supervised vision transformers (ViT). In this work, we leverage motion cues, inspired by the common fate principle that pixels that share similar movements tend to belong to the same object. We propose a new loss term formulation that uses optical flow in unlabeled videos to encourage self-supervised ViT features to become closer to each other if their corresponding spatial locations share similar movements, and vice versa. We use the proposed loss function to finetune vision transformers that were originally trained on static images. Our fine-tuning procedure outperforms state-of-the-art techniques for unsupervised semantic segmentation through linear probing, without the use of any labeled data. Radars, due to their robustness to adverse weather conditions and ability to measure object motions, have served in autonomous driving and intelligent agents for years. However, Radar-based perception suffers from its unintuitive sensing data, which lack of semantic and structural information of scenes. To tackle this problem, camera and Radar sensor fusion has been investigated as a trending strategy with low cost, high reliability and strong maintenance. While most recent works explore how to explore Radar point clouds and images, rich contextual information within Radar observation are discarded. In this paper, we propose a hybrid point-wise Radar-Optical fusion approach for object detection in autonomous driving scenarios. The framework benefits from dense contextual information from both the range-doppler spectrum and images which are integrated to learn a multi-modal feature representation. Furthermore, we propose a novel local coordinate formulation, tackling the object detection task in an object-centric coordinate. Extensive results show that with the information gained from optical images, we could achieve leading performance in object detection (97.69\% recall) compared to recent state-of-the-art methods FFT-RadNet (82.86\% recall). Ablation studies verify the key design choices and practicability of our approach given machine generated imperfect detections. The code will be available at https://github.com/LiuLiu-55/ROFusion.

When artificial neural networks have demonstrated exceptional practical success in a variety of domains, investigations into their theoretical characteristics, such as their approximation power, statistical properties, and generalization performance, have concurrently made significant strides. In this paper, we construct a novel theory for understanding the effectiveness of neural networks, which offers a perspective distinct from prior research. Specifically, we explore the rationale underlying a common practice during the construction of neural network models: sample splitting. Our findings indicate that the optimal hyperparameters derived from sample splitting can enable a neural network model that asymptotically minimizes the prediction risk. Given the special situation of modeling gigapixel images, multiple instance learning (MIL) has become one of the most important frameworks for Whole Slide Image (WSI) classification. In current practice, most MIL networks often face two unavoidable problems in training: i) insufficient WSI data and ii) the sample memorization inclination inherent in neural networks. These problems may hinder MIL models from adequate and efficient training, suppressing the continuous performance promotion of classification models on WSIs. Inspired by the basic idea of Mixup, this paper proposes a new Pseudo-bag Mixup (PseMix) data augmentation scheme to improve the training of MIL models. This scheme generalizes the Mixup strategy for general images to special WSIs via pseudo-bags so as to be applied in MIL-based WSI classification. Cooperated by pseudo-bags, our PseMix fulfills the critical size alignment and semantic alignment in Mixup strategy. Moreover, it is designed as an efficient and decoupled method, neither involving time-consuming operations nor relying on MIL model predictions. Comparative experiments and ablation studies are specially designed to evaluate the effectiveness and advantages of our PseMix. Experimental results show that PseMix could often assist state-of-the-art MIL networks to refresh their classification performance on WSIs. Besides, it could also boost the generalization performance of MIL models in special test scenarios, and promote their robustness to patch occlusion and label noise. The duality between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory enables us to lift bound states of D$0$-branes and $n$ parallel D$6$-branes to M-theory compactified on an $n$-centered multi-Taub-NUT space $\mathbb{TN}_{n}$. Accordingly, the rank $n$ K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ are connected with the index of M-theory on $\mathbb{C}^{3}\times\mathbb{TN}_{n}$. In this paper, we extend this connection by considering intersecting D$6$-branes. In the presence of a suitable Neveu-Schwarz $B$-field, the system preserves two supercharges. This system is T-dual to the configuration of tetrahedron instantons which we introduced in \cite{Pomoni:2021hkn}. We conjecture a closed-form expression for the K-theoretic tetrahedron instanton partition function, which is the generating function of the D$0$-D$6$ partition functions. We find that the tetrahedron instanton partition function coincides with the partition function of the magnificent four model for special values of the parameters, leading us to conjecture that our system of intersecting D$6$-branes can be obtained from the annihilation of D$8$-branes and anti-D$8$-branes. Remarkably, the K-theoretic tetrahedron instanton partition function allows an interpretation in terms of the index of M-theory on a noncompact Calabi-Yau fivefold which is related to a superposition of Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The dimensional reduction of the system allows us to express the cohomological tetrahedron instanton partition function in terms of the MacMahon function, generalizing the correspondence between Gromov-Witten invariants and Donaldson-Thomas invariants for Calabi-Yau threefolds., Comment: 23 pages; v2: additional references and minor corrections; v3: minor changes. Noticing the urgent need to provide tools for fast and user-friendly qualitative analysis of large-scale textual corpora of the modern NLP, we propose to turn to the mature and well-tested methods from the domain of Information Retrieval (IR) - a research field with a long history of tackling TB-scale document collections. We discuss how Pyserini - a widely used toolkit for reproducible IR research can be integrated with the Hugging Face ecosystem of open-source AI libraries and artifacts. We leverage the existing functionalities of both platforms while proposing novel features further facilitating their integration. Our goal is to give NLP researchers tools that will allow them to develop retrieval-based instrumentation for their data analytics needs with ease and agility. We include a Jupyter Notebook-based walk through the core interoperability features, available on GitHub at https://github.com/huggingface/gaia. We then demonstrate how the ideas we present can be operationalized to create a powerful tool for qualitative data analysis in NLP. We present GAIA Search - a search engine built following previously laid out principles, giving access to four popular large-scale text collections. GAIA serves a dual purpose of illustrating the potential of methodologies we discuss but also as a standalone qualitative analysis tool that can be leveraged by NLP researchers aiming to understand datasets prior to using them in training. Lesion segmentation of ultrasound medical images based on deep learning techniques is a widely used method for diagnosing diseases. Although there is a large amount of ultrasound image data in medical centers and other places, labeled ultrasound datasets are a scarce resource, and it is likely that no datasets are available for new tissues/organs. Transfer learning provides the possibility to solve this problem, but there are too many features in natural images that are not related to the target domain. As a source domain, redundant features that are not conducive to the task will be extracted. Migration between ultrasound images can avoid this problem, but there are few types of public datasets, and it is difficult to find sufficiently similar source domains. Compared with natural images, ultrasound images have less information, and there are fewer transferable features between different ultrasound images, which may cause negative transfer. To this end, a multi-source adversarial transfer learning network for ultrasound image segmentation is proposed. Specifically, to address the lack of annotations, the idea of adversarial transfer learning is used to adaptively extract common features between a certain pair of source and target domains, which provides the possibility to utilize unlabeled ultrasound data. To alleviate the lack of knowledge in a single source domain, multi-source transfer learning is adopted to fuse knowledge from multiple source domains. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the fusion and maximize the use of precious data, a multi-source domain independent strategy is also proposed to improve the estimation of the target domain data distribution, which further increases the learning ability of the multi-source adversarial migration learning network in multiple domains., Comment: Submitted to Applied Soft Computing Journal

The shutter strategy applied to the photo-shooting process has a significant influence on the quality of the captured photograph. An improper shutter may lead to a blurry image, video discontinuity, or rolling shutter artifact. Existing works try to provide an independent solution for each issue. In this work, we aim to re-expose the captured photo in post-processing to provide a more flexible way of addressing those issues within a unified framework. Specifically, we propose a neural network-based image re-exposure framework. It consists of an encoder for visual latent space construction, a re-exposure module for aggregating information to neural film with a desired shutter strategy, and a decoder for 'developing' neural film into a desired image. To compensate for information confusion and missing frames, event streams, which can capture almost continuous brightness changes, are leveraged in computing visual latent content. Both self-attention layers and cross-attention layers are employed in the re-exposure module to promote interaction between neural film and visual latent content and information aggregation to neural film. The proposed unified image re-exposure framework is evaluated on several shutter-related image recovery tasks and performs favorably against independent state-of-the-art methods.

The random forest (RF) algorithm has become a very popular prediction method for its great flexibility and promising accuracy. In RF, it is conventional to put equal weights on all the base learners (trees) to aggregate their predictions. However, the predictive performances of different trees within the forest can be very different due to the randomization of the embedded bootstrap sampling and feature selection. In this paper, we focus on RF for regression and propose two optimal weighting algorithms, namely the 1 Step Optimal Weighted RF (1step-WRF$_\mathrm{opt}$) and 2 Steps Optimal Weighted RF (2steps-WRF$_\mathrm{opt}$), that combine the base learners through the weights determined by weight choice criteria. Under some regularity conditions, we show that these algorithms are asymptotically optimal in the sense that the resulting squared loss and risk are asymptotically identical to those of the infeasible but best possible model averaging estimator. Numerical studies conducted on real-world data sets indicate that these algorithms outperform the equal-weight forest and two other weighted RFs proposed in existing literature in most cases., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

Multivariate time series may be subject to partial structural changes over certain frequency band, for instance, in neuroscience. We study the change point detection problem with high dimensional time series, within the framework of frequency domain. The overarching goal is to locate all change points and delineate which series are activated by the change, over which frequencies. In practice, the number of activated series per change and frequency could span from a few to full participation. We solve the problem by first computing a CUSUM tensor based on spectra estimated from blocks of the time series. A frequency-specific projection approach is applied for dimension reduction. The projection direction is estimated by a proposed tensor decomposition algorithm that adjusts to the sparsity level of changes. Finally, the projected CUSUM vectors across frequencies are aggregated for change point detection. We provide theoretical guarantees on the number of estimated change points and the convergence rate of their locations. We derive error bounds for the estimated projection direction for identifying the frequency-specific series activated in a change. We provide data-driven rules for the choice of parameters. The efficacy of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation and a stock returns application.

An innovative sort of mobility platform that can both drive and fly is the air-ground robot. The need for an agile flight cannot be satisfied by traditional path planning techniques for air-ground robots. Prior studies had mostly focused on improving the energy efficiency of paths, seldom taking the seeking speed and optimizing take-off and landing places into account. A robot for the field application environment was proposed, and a lightweight global spatial planning technique for the robot based on the graph-search algorithm taking mode switching point optimization into account, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, searching speed, and the viability of real deployment. The fundamental concept is to lower the computational burden by employing an interchangeable search approach that combines planar and spatial search. Furthermore, to safeguard the health of the power battery and the integrity of the mission execution, a trap escape approach was also provided. Simulations are run to test the effectiveness of the suggested model based on the field DEM map. The simulation results show that our technology is capable of producing finished, plausible 3D paths with a high degree of believability. Additionally, the mode-switching point optimization method efficiently identifies additional acceptable places for mode switching, and the improved paths use less time and energy.
