Hydrogen sensing is becoming one of the hottest topics in the chemical sensing field, due to its wide number of applications and the dangerousness of hydrogen leakages. For this reason, research activities are focusing on the development of high-performance materials that can be easily integrated in sensing devices. In this work, we investigated the influence of Nb on the sensing performances of WO 3 nanowires (NWs) synthetized by a low-cost thermal oxidation method. The morphology and the structure of these Nb-WO 3 nanowires were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies, confirming that the addition of Nb does not modify significantly the monoclinic crystal structure of WO 3 . Moreover, we integrated these NWs into chemical sensors, and we assessed their performances toward hydrogen and some common interfering compounds. Although the hydrogen sensing performances of WO 3 nanowires were already excellent, thanks to the presence of Nb they have been further enhanced, reaching the outstanding value of more than 80,000 towards 500 ppm @ 200 °C. This opens the possibility of their integration in commercial equipment, like electronic noses and portable devices.

This review focuses on the synthesis and chemical sensing characterization of metal oxide heterostructures reported since 2012. Heterostructures exhibit strong interactions between closely packed interfaces, showing superior performances compared to single structures. Surface effects appear thanks to the magnification of nanostructures' surface leading to an enhancement of surface related properties (the base of chemical sensors working mechanism). The combination of different metal oxides to form heterostructures further improves the selectivity and/or other important sensing parameters. A very large number of different morphologies and structures have been proposed, each one exhibiting peculiar sensing properties towards specific chemical compounds. Among the different preparation methodologies, a significant number has been performed by means of hydrothermal method. However, the combination of various fabrication methods seems a very efficient strategy to obtain metal oxide-based heterostructures with different morphologies and dimensions such as core-shell nanostructures, one-dimensional heterostructures, two-dimensional layered heterojunctions, and three-dimensional hierarchical heterostructures. Despite all extraordinary advances in both material science and nanotechnology and the results achieved with heterostructured chemical sensors, there are few points that still deserve further studies and investigations, such as possible diffusion across the junctions, reproducibility of the fabrication process, synergistic or catalytic effects among the materials forming the heterostructures and influence/stability of the contacts. Moreover, perfect control over their growth is mandatory for their application in commercial devices. Only a careful understanding of the growth and the interface properties could fill the existing gap between laboratory studies and real-world exploitation of these heterostructures., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The surface chemistry and the morphology of SnO₂ nanowires of average length and diameter of several µm and around 100 nm, respectively, deposited by vapor phase deposition (VPD) method on Au-covered Si substrate, were studied before and after subsequent air exposure. For this purpose, surface-sensitive methods, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were applied. The studies presented within this paper allowed to determine their surface non-stoichiometry combined with the presence of carbon contaminations, in a good correlation with their surface morphology. The relative concentrations of the main components [O]/[Sn]; [C]/[Sn]; [Au]/[Sn], together with the O⁻Sn; O⁻Si bonds, were analyzed. The results of TDS remained in a good agreement with the observations from XPS. Moreover, conclusions obtained for SnO₂ nanowires deposited with the use of Au catalyst were compared to the previous obtained for Ag-assisted tin dioxide nanowires. The information obtained within these studies is of a great importance for the potential application of SnO₂ nanowires in the field of novel chemical nanosensor devices, since the results can provide an interpretation of how aging effects influence gas sensor dynamic characteristics.

Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is one of the most appreciated and consumed foods worldwide, especially in Italy, for its high content of nutrients and taste. However, these characteristics make this product subject to counterfeiting in different forms. In this study, a novel method based on an electronic nose has been developed to investigate the potentiality of this tool to distinguish rind percentages in grated Parmigiano Reggiano packages that should be lower than 18%. Different samples, in terms of percentage, seasoning and rind working process, were considered to tackle the problem at 360°. In parallel, GC-MS technique was used to give a name to the compounds that characterize Parmigiano and to relate them to sensors responses. Data analysis consisted of two stages: Multivariate analysis (PLS) and classification made in a hierarchical way with PLS-DA ad ANNs. Results were promising, in terms of correct classification of the samples. The correct classification rate (%) was higher for ANNs than PLS-DA, with correct identification approaching 100 percent.

Metal oxide (MOX) gas sensors sensitively respond to a wide variety of combustible, explosive and poisonous gases. However, due to the lack of a built-in self-test capability, MOX gas sensors have not yet been able to penetrate safety-critical applications. In the present work we report on gas sensing experiments performed on MOX gas sensors embedded in ceramic micro-reaction chambers. With the help of an external micro-pump, such systems can be operated in a periodic manner alternating between flow and no-flow conditions, thus allowing repetitive measurements of the sensor resistances under clean air, R 0 , and under gas exposure, R g a s , to be obtained, even under field conditions. With these pairs of resistance values, eventual drifts in the sensor baseline resistance can be detected and drift-corrected values of the relative resistance response R e s p = ( R 0 - R g a s ) / R 0 can be determined. Residual poisoning-induced changes in the relative resistance response can be detected by reference to humidity measurements taken with room-temperature-operated capacitive humidity sensors which are insensitive to the poisoning processes operative on heated MOX gas sensors., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. 2D transition metal dichalcogenides are attracting a strong interest following the popularity of graphene and other carbon-based materials. In the field of chemical sensors, they offer some interesting features that could potentially overcome the limitation of graphene and metal oxides, such as the possibility of operating at room temperature. Molybdenum-based dichalcogenides in particular are among the most studied materials, thanks to their facile preparation techniques and promising performances. The present review summarizes the advances in the exploitation of these Mo X ₂ materials as chemical sensors for the detection of typical environmental pollutants, such as NO₂, NH₃, CO and volatile organic compounds., Competing Interests: The author declares no conflict of interest.

Preparation and characterization of different metal oxide (NiO, WO 3 , ZnO, SnO 2 and Nb 2 O 5 ) nanostructures for chemical sensing are presented. p-Type (NiO) and n-type (WO 3 , SnO 2 , ZnO and Nb 2 O 5 ) metal oxide nanostructures were grown on alumina substrates using evaporation-condensation, thermal oxidation and hydrothermal techniques. Surface morphologies and crystal structures were investigated through scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, different batches of sensors have been prepared, and their sensing performances towards carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide have been explored. Moreover, metal oxide nanowires have been integrated into an electronic nose and successfully applied to discriminate between drinking and contaminated water.

This work reports the recent results achieved at the SENSOR Lab, Brescia (Italy) to address the selectivity of metal oxide based gas sensors. In particular, two main strategies are being developed for this purpose: (i) investigating different sensing mechanisms featuring different response spectra that may be potentially integrated in a single device; (ii) exploiting the electronic nose (EN) approach. The former has been addressed only recently and activities are mainly focused on determining the most suitable configuration and measurements to exploit the novel mechanism. Devices suitable to exploit optical (photoluminescence), magnetic (magneto-optical Kerr effect) and surface ionization in addition to the traditional chemiresistor device are here discussed together with the sensing performance measured so far. The electronic nose is a much more consolidated technology, and results are shown concerning its suitability to respond to industrial and societal needs in the fields of food quality control and detection of microbial activity in human sweat.

Zinc oxide (ZnO, n-type) and copper oxide (CuO, p-type) nanowires have been synthesized and preliminarily investigated as innovative materials for the fabrication of a proof-of-concept thermoelectric device. The Seebeck coefficients, electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power factors (TPF) of both semiconductor materials have been determined independently using a custom experimental set-up, leading to results in agreement with available literature with potential improvement. Combining bundles of ZnO and CuO nanowires in a series of five thermocouples on alumina leads to a macroscopic prototype of a planar thermoelectric generator (TEG) unit. This demonstrates the possibility of further integration of metal oxide nanostructures into efficient thermoelectric devices.

In this paper we investigate the surface chemistry, including surface contaminations, of SnO2 nanowires deposited on Ag-covered Si substrate by vapor phase deposition (VPD), thanks to x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Air-exposed SnO2 nanowires are slightly non-stoichiometric, and a huge amount of C contaminations is observed at their surface. After the thermal physical desorption (TPD) process, SnO2 nanowires become almost stoichiometric without any surface C contaminations. This is probably related to the fact that C contaminations, as well as residual gases from air, are weakly bounded to the crystalline SnO2 nanowires and can be easily removed from their surface. The obtained results gave us insight on the interpretation of the aging effect of SnO2 nanowires that is of great importance for their potential application in the development of novel chemical nanosensor devices.

This paper presents different applications, in various foodstuffs, by a novel electronic nose (EN) based on a mixed metal oxide sensors array composed of thin films as well as nanowires. The electronic nose used for this work has been done, starting from the commercial model EOS835 produced by SACMI Scarl. The SENSOR Lab (CNR-INO, Brescia) has produced both typologies of sensors, classical MOX and the new technologies with nanowire. The aim of this work was to test and to illustrate the broad spectrum of potential uses of the EN technique in food quality control and microbial contamination diagnosis. The EN technique was coupled with classical microbiological and chemical techniques, like gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) with SPME technique. Three different scenarios are presented: (a) detection of indigenous mould in green coffee beans, (b) selection of microbiological spoilage of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), and (c) monitoring of potable water. In each case, the novel EN was able to identify the spoiled product by means of the alterations in the pattern of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reconstructed by principal component analysis (PCA) of the sensor responses. The achieved results strongly encourage the use of EN in industrial laboratories. Finally, recent trends and future directions are illustrated.

Surface coating with an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) can enhance surface reactions or the absorption of specific gases and hence improve the response of a metal oxide (MOx) sensor toward particular target gases in the environment. In this study the effect of an adsorbed organic layer on the dynamic response of zinc oxide nanowire gas sensors was investigated. The effect of ZnO surface functionalisation by two different organic molecules, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THMA) and dodecanethiol (DT), was studied. The response towards ammonia, nitrous oxide and nitrogen dioxide was investigated for three sensor configurations, namely pure ZnO nanowires, organic-coated ZnO nanowires and ZnO nanowires covered with a sparse layer of organic-coated ZnO nanoparticles. Exposure of the nanowire sensors to the oxidising gas NO(2) produced a significant and reproducible response. ZnO and THMA-coated ZnO nanowire sensors both readily detected NO(2) down to a concentration in the very low ppm range. Notably, the THMA-coated nanowires consistently displayed a small, enhanced response to NO(2) compared to uncoated ZnO nanowire sensors. At the lower concentration levels tested, ZnO nanowire sensors that were coated with THMA-capped ZnO nanoparticles were found to exhibit the greatest enhanced response. ΔR/R was two times greater than that for the as-prepared ZnO nanowire sensors. It is proposed that the ΔR/R enhancement in this case originates from the changes induced in the depletion-layer width of the ZnO nanoparticles that bridge ZnO nanowires resulting from THMA ligand binding to the surface of the particle coating. The heightened response and selectivity to the NO(2) target are positive results arising from the coating of these ZnO nanowire sensors with organic-SAM-functionalised ZnO nanoparticles.
