106. Lubricant-infused iron palmitate surfaces with high durability and stable condensation heat transfer.

Abstract

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces are vulnerable to lubricant depletion caused by three major factors encompassing, the evaporation, cloaking, and shearing. Herein, lubricant-infused iron palmitate surfaces (LI-IPSs) are presented addressing the challenges of (1) evaporation-driven lubricant depletion enabled by the immensely clustered micro-/nano-structures of iron palmitate surface (IPS), (2) completely suppressing the wetting ridge even with miscible water-oil combinations enabled by only the handful uptake of oil by IPS. The apparent contact angle θa and sliding angle α of water on LI-IPSs are 98° ± 2° and 3° ± 1°, respectively. Under evaporation-driven lubricant depletion analysis, the shelf-durability of LI-IPSs has been found to last for 10 days in partially open environment at the ambient temperature (25 °C). The heat fluxes and condensate fluxes have been determined. The highest condensate flux on LI-IPSs (14 kgh−1 m−2) is ascribed to the dropwise condensation mode with efficient droplet dynamics. However, the service durability of LI-IPSs has lasted only for 50 ± 5 min under rigorous condensation, which is further addressed by developing a LI-IPS prototype. Based on the excellent wicking capability of IPS, LI-IPS prototype is capable of maintaining the dropwise condensation unless the oil is available in the oil tub. The LI-IPS prototype has been subjected to open environment at ambient temperature for 168 h, and even after that, the stable dropwise condensation has been achieved with the same range of droplet speed as had been observed in the first hour. Abstract

The composition of natural gas can vary considerably across different oil and gas fields. Such compositional variation is primarily reflected in the distinctive physical properties of natural gas. However, during practical application in an oil and gas field, a refrigeration temperature drop in a vortex tube is often observed because vortex tubes generally have low intrinsic refrigeration efficiencies. When vortex tubes are applied in oil and gas fields, the utilization of the oil pressure of a natural gas wellhead is often desirable to avoid excessive energy usage from external devices. In this study, a numerical model of a vortex tube was developed, executed, and validated through laboratory experiments. The refrigeration temperature drop values of 12 gases with distinctive physical properties at a total inlet pressure of 0.3 MPa, an inlet temperature of 300 K, and a cooling mass flow ratio of 0.5 were analyzed. The importance of different physical properties was ranked based on the gray correlation method. Additionally, the synergetic effects of the physical properties on the refrigeration temperature drop were analyzed via regression fitting. The results indicate a significant impact of the gas physical properties on the refrigeration temperature drop in the vortex tube. The maximum and minimum refrigeration temperature drop obtained for different gases can differ by up to 16 K. Furthermore, the refrigeration temperature drop in the vortex tube does not change monotonically with any physical property. Instead, it depends on the synergetic effect from the physical properties, which have different levels of influence on it.

Abstract

Low-grade thermal energy conversion and utilization are important for sustainable energy strategies and environmental conservation. Technologies such as ocean thermal convertors, thermoelectric generators, organic Rankine cycles, and heat pumps are being used to convert low-grade thermal energy into useful forms like electricity or heating. Advancements in materials science, engineering, and renewable energy technologies are improving the efficiency of converting low-grade heat into electricity and integrating renewable and waste heat sources into the grid. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is particularly valuable for harnessing renewable energy from the oceans, while thermoelectric power generation converts waste heat into electricity. Organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) and loop heat pipes (LHPs) also play important roles in harnessing low-grade heat sources and thermal management systems. 126. Lattice Boltzmann investigation of flow boiling in a microchannel

Abstract

A hybrid multiphase lattice Boltzmann model is adopted to investigate the flow boiling heat transfer process in a horizontal microchannel with consideration of bubble dynamics. The flow pattern transition in a microchannel, involving single-phase flow, bubbly flow, slug flow, and contact-slug flow, is reproduced by varying the heat flux. The influencing parameters, including the liquid mass flux, the heating wall wettability, and the confinement height of channels, on dynamic bubble behaviors and heat transfer performance are discussed. The results indicate that a sequence of single-phase flow, bubbly flow, slug flow, and contact-slug flow occurs in a microchannel with increasing heat flux. Correspondingly, the dominant heat transfer mechanism experiences the liquid convection (single-phase flow), nucleate boiling (bubbly flow), the microlayer evaporation (slug flow), and the hybrid gas convection and microlayer evaporation (contact-slug flow). The increase of mass flux or confinement height extends the range of heat flux for high-efficiency bubbly and slug flow. The hydrophilic heating wall is preferred for better heat transfer performance in a microchannel due to the strengthened microlayer evaporation and less vapor occupation of the effective nucleation area.

Abstract

YAP/TAZ transcriptional co‐activators play pivotal roles in tumorigenesis. In the Hippo pathway, diverse signals activate the MST‐LATS kinase cascade that leads to YAP/TAZ phosphorylation, and subsequent ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation by SCFβ‐TrCP. When the MST‐LATS kinase cascade is inactive, unphosphorylated or dephosphorylated YAP/TAZ translocate into the nucleus to mediate TEAD‐dependent gene transcription. Hippo signaling‐independent YAP/TAZ activation in human malignancies has also been observed, yet the mechanism remains largely elusive. Here, we report that the ubiquitin E3 ligase HERC3 can promote YAP/TAZ activation independently of its enzymatic activity. HERC3 directly binds to β‐TrCP, blocks its interaction with YAP/TAZ, and thus prevents YAP/TAZ ubiquitination and degradation. Expression levels of HERC3 correlate with YAP/TAZ protein levels and expression of YAP/TAZ target genes in breast tumor cells and tissues. Accordingly, knockdown of HERC3 expression ameliorates tumorigenesis of breast cancer cells. Our results establish HERC3 as a critical regulator of the YAP/TAZ stability and a potential therapeutic target for breast cancer. Synopsis: The activity of the Hippo pathway transcriptional co‐activators YAP/TAZ is regulated by several ubiquitin E3 ligases, including the SCFβ‐TrCP complex. Lindl. polysaccharides (ARPs) have been reported to exhibit multiple pharmacological activities including anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperglycemia. This study aims to investigate the effect of ARPs on cognitive dysfunction induced by high fat diet (HFD).Methods: Six-week-old male mice were treated with ARPs by dietary supplementation for 14 weeks. The effect of ARPs on cognitive function was determined by assessing the changes in spatial learning and memory ability, neurotrophic factors in hippocampus, inflammatory parameters, intestinal barrier integrity, and gut microbiota.Results: ARPs supplementation can effectively ameliorate cognitive dysfunction, decrease the phosphorylation levels of Tau protein in hippocampus. Meanwhile, the increased body weight, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, inflammatory factors induced by HFD were abolished by ARPs treatment. Furthermore, ARPs treatment restored the intestinal epithelial barrier as evidenced by upregulation of intestinal tight junction proteins. Additionally, ARPs supplementation significantly decreased the relative abundance of several bacteria genus such as Parabacteroides, which may play regulatory roles in cognitive function.Conclusion: These results suggest that ARPs might be a promising strategy for the treatment of cognitive dysfunction induced by HFD.
