114. Visual Perception and Regulatory Conflict: Motivation and Physiology Influence Distance Perception

Abstract

Regulatory conflict can emerge when people experience a strong motivation to act on goals but a conflicting inclination to withhold action because physical resources available, or "physiological potentials", are low. This study demonstrated that distance perception is biased in ways that theory suggests assists in managing this conflict. Participants estimated the distance to a target location. Individual differences in physiological potential measured via waist-to-hip ratio interacted with manipulated motivational states to predict visual perception. Among people low in physiological potential and likely to experience regulatory conflict, the environment appeared easier to traverse when motivation was strong compared with weak. Among people high in potential and less likely to experience conflict, perception was not predicted by motivational strength. The role of motivated distance perception in self-regulation is discussed. (Contains 1 figure.)

Over a decade ago, it was shown that every edge unfolding of the Platonic solids was without self-overlap, yielding a valid net. Recent work has extended this property to their higher-dimensional analogs: the 4-cube, 4-simplex, and 4-orthoplex. We present an interactive visualization that allows the user to unfold these polytopes by drawing on their dual 1-skeleton graph.

Abstract

NiOx as a type of inorganic hole-transporting layer (HTL) material in narrow bandgap perovskite solar cells (NBG PSCs) showed exceptional stability but suffered a considerably poorer performance compared with NBG PSCs with commonly used PEDOT:PSS as the HTL. Herein, we found that redox reactions would occur at the interface between Ni3+ on the NiOx surface and the easily oxidized Sn2+ in the perovskite, causing considerable non-radiative recombination centers. On this basis, we proposed a bifacial reduction strategy at the interface to boost the performance of NBG PSCs. By using a reductive reagent ascorbic acid to reduce the Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio on the surface of NiOx beforehand, the possibility of contact between Ni3+ on the surface of NiOx and perovskite is chemically reduced substantially, suppressing the redox reaction between them as well as the non-radiative recombination at the interface. By applying this strategy, the device's power conversion efficiency is elevated from 17.81% to 20.48%, with 91% remaining after 1128 hours of storage in a nitrogen-filled glovebox.
