Abstract

Holly was aware, when she took her cat to UGA, that she was unlike the other owners who typically fly their cats to Georgia for kidney transplants. When Clare Gregory and his colleagues at UC Davis pioneered cat kidney transplants in the late '80s, he made sure that owners adopted the donor - a policy that all three hospitals performing cat kidney transplants in the U.S. continue to uphold. The University of Wisconsin buys research cats to use as kidney donors, too, and the University of Pennsylvania, which runs the third and largest cat-transplant program in the country, keeps a small colony of donor cats sourced from a shelter. Abstract

The effect of differentiation on the transverse mechanical properties of mammalian myocytes was determined by using atomic force microscopy. The apparent elastic modulus increased from 11.5 [+ or -] 1.3 kPa for undifferentiated myoblasts to 45.3 [+ or -] 4.0 kPa after 8 days of differentiation (P < 0.05). The relative contribution of viscosity, as determined from the normalized hysteresis area, ranged from 0.13 [+ or -] 0.02 to 0.21 [+ or -] 0.03 and did not change throughout differentiation. Myosin expression correlated with the apparent elastic modulus, but neither myosin nor [beta]-tubulin were associated with hysteresis. Microtubules did not affect mechanical properties because treatment with colchicine did not alter the apparent elastic modulus or hysteresis. Treatment with cytochalasin D or 2,3-butanedione 2-monoxime led to a significant reduction in the apparent elastic modulus but no change in hysteresis. In summary, skeletal muscle cells exhibited viscoelastic behavior that changed during differentiation, yielding an increase in the transverse elastic modulus. The proliferation of geospatial data, services, and applications on the web, as well as open data made available by government agencies, have brought both opportunities and challenges for the public to engage more widely and deeply with geospatial data. Promoting spatial literacy and GIS education for the public is key to responding to the opportunities and challenges, in which academic libraries can play a pertinent role by leveraging their experience in providing geospatial data services and education. This paper describes a GIS workshop designed to cultivate spatial literacy for the public, a collaboration between an academic library and a campus unit mandated to nurture community connections. The discussions focus on how the workshop was an endeavor to synergize with the university's commitment to public engagement and how it adopted an equitable approach to teaching spatial literacy for the public. 129. α2-Adrenergic Receptor Agonist, an Attractive but Underused ERAS Component in Improving Fast-Track Recovery and Surgical Outcomes.

Abstract

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have been implemented in many institutions to attenuate the stress of surgery and facilitate early recovery. Careful selection of multimodal analgesic medication plays an essential role in achieving the goals of ERAS protocols. Clonidine and dexmedetomidine are α2-adrenergic receptor (α2-AR) agonists that can greatly enhance various ERAS components owing to their unique pharmacologic properties: antinociception, anxiolysis, anti-inflammation, and renal protection. The α2-AR agonists exert supraspinal and spinal antinociceptive effects by potentiating descending pain modulatory pathways and inhibiting peripheral C fi bers. These antinociceptive effects of α2-AR agonists are independent of opioid receptors and result in analgesic synergy with opioid agonists. Several meta-analyses and systematic reviews have reported that α2-AR agonists decrease opioid consumption and side effects in adult and pediatric surgical patients. Given the wide distribution of α2-ARs in the body, α2-AR agonists have been associated with a reduction in anxiety, perioperative stress, inflammation, postoperative nausea and vomiting, shivering, and cognitive dysfunction. This course describes the basic and applied pharmacology of the α2-AR agonists and provides emerging evidence to support their utility in acute pain management and ERAS protocols. Abstract

Damaraland mole rats (DMRs, Fukomys damarensis) are a eusocial fossorial species that spend the majority of their life in densely-populated underground burrows, in which they likely experience intermittent periods of elevated CO2 (i.e. hypercapnia). The primary physiological response to hypercapnia in most mammals is to increase depth and rate of breathing (i.e. hyperpnoea), but this response is often blunted in species that inhabit hypercapnic environments. In their natural habitat, DMRs putatively experience a gaseous environment ranging from normocapnic (0.1% CO2) to hypercapnic (6.0% CO2) conditions (Roper et al. 2001 J. Zool. 254, 101–107). As such, we hypothesized that DMRs would exhibit blunted hypercapnic ventilatory and metabolic responses, relative to those of non-fossorial rodent species. To test this hypothesis, we exposed awake, freely behaving DMRs to normoxic normocapnia (21% O2, 0% CO2, balance N2) or graded normoxic hypercapnia (21% O2, 0, 2, 5, 7 and 10% CO2, balance N2), and measured ventilation and metabolism using whole-body plethysmography and indirect calorimetry, respectively. We found that ventilation and metabolism were unchanged during prolonged normocapnia, whereas during graded hypercapnia, ventilation was elevated at 2% CO2 and above. As a result, O2 extraction efficiency at the lungs decreased with increasing hyperpnoea. Conversely, metabolic rate did not increase until 10% CO2, presumably due to the metabolic cost of hyperpnoea. Taken together, our results suggest that despite their fossorial lifestyle, DMRs do not exhibit adaptations in their ventilatory or metabolic responses to environmental hypercapnia.
