The Pathé company, although one of the key players at the dawn of the phonographic industry, is today one of the least documented. This article will explore the unconventional methods utilized by Pathé's technology, through the monumental developments of the phonographic industry, in order to understand the underlying reasons of Pathé's market strategies as they relate to other leading international players. Today, there is a significant amount of uncertainty regarding the cataloging of Pathé's products, mainly due to a distinct two-step duplication process, the code system management of each media issue, and the Pathé's own destruction of primary sources from its acoustical period. The compilation of a discography requires a significant amount of research effort and data validation. In the case of Pathé, the available data are difficult to certify, especially where the reference/bibliography provide conflicting or questionable reports. To address these problems and accurately identify and catalog each issue of Pathé's cylinders and discs, the company's peculiar code system and its internal connections are examined and described. Starting with the hypothesis that sound recordings published by the Serbian/ Yugoslav record label PGP-RTB/RTS dominated programmes of the Radio Television Belgrade/Radio Television Serbia during most of the twentieth century (while declining in this century), and that decisions made within the label on which composers’ works were going to be (repeatedly) present in its catalogue consequently had significant impact on overall music and media culture in Serbia/Yugoslavia, our goal was to examine how the central composer figure of Serbian music, Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac, was represented in this catalogue. Research methods were based primarily on analysis of archive material gathered in documentation of the label itself, data on recordings available via online music databases, and recordings themselves, while relying on theoretical notions of canon in music, with the accent on the performing canon. This article provides extra information about Maria Kapkidi’s Ali Pasha discography. In it both the structure of the discography and the terminology used will be clarified. This is a shortened version (thanks, Paula!) of the original article which can be viewed on www.recordingpioneers.com. This discography is thematic: it contains both acoustic recordings and electric recordings on 78rpm gramophone records of songs about Ali Pasha and covers the period of 1904 to 1957. These recordings were made by a broad scala of record companies, big and small, which were active in the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Greece. The discography also contains recordings made in America and recordings that were originally made in Europe and later reissued in the USA. It clearly shows the various administrative practices of record companies during that period, but also shows how discographical practices of a particular company were subject to change with the passing of time. Summary of Background Data The literature on cervical provocation discography (C-PD) is sparse. A "Startle Response" during C-PD is a known phenomenon that might be mistaken as an indicator of discogenic pain at the provoked disc level, but this has not been quantitatively described. Objectives To determine the incidence of the Startle Response and its concordance/discordance with true-positive C-PD in patients referred for surgical planning or evaluation after ruling out other axial pain generators. Methods Retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who received C-PD at an outpatient spine center. The primary outcome was the rate of discordance of the Startle Response with true-positive C-PD according to the operational criteria of the Spine Intervention Society (SIS) guidelines. Results One hundred five discs were provoked in 36 individuals (19 female, mean age [SD] = 45.7 [10.9] years). C-PD was performed at a median of three levels (range = 1–5) with C4/5 (N = 30), C5/6 (N = 30), and C6/7 (N = 31) the most commonly evaluated. Twenty-six of 36 patients reported responses consistent with true-positive C-PD. A Startle Response was observed in 14 patients (39%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 23–57%), and 22 of 105 (21%, 95% CI = 14–30%) provoked discs. Of the 14 patients who exhibited a Startle Response, four had negative C-PD results (29%, 95% CI = 8–58%). As assessed per disc, C-PD results were positive in 12 of the 22 (55%, 95% CI = 32–76%) provoked discs that generated a Startle Response. Conclusions The present data demonstrate high discordance, 45% (95% CI = 24–68%), between the Startle Response and true-positive C-PD. Clinicians should be aware of this phenomenon and take care to distinguish it from a true-positive response during C-PD, as defined by the SIS guidelines. Misinterpretation of the Startle Response as a positive C-PD result may lead to inappropriate future care decisions in a substantial proportion of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent passing of English guitarist Julian Bream (1933-2000) has motivated a reevaluation of his artistic legacy by critics around the world. The current article reads the relationship between Bream's discography and that of his predecessor, Andrés Segovia, in light of Harold Bloom's theory of influence, methodology first proposed and defended in my 2006 doctoral dissertation. After dividing Bream's fifty albums in phases inspired by Bloomian categories, the article carefully attends to the works repeatedly recorded by Bream, in particular, those to which he returns three or more times. Abstract Background Posterior epidural migration of lumbar disc fragments (PEMLDF) is extremely rare. It is often confused with other posterior lesions and is usually diagnosed intraoperatively. We here describe the use of preoperative discography in the diagnosis of PEMLDF. Case presentation A 78-year-old man presented with acute low back pain, gait disturbance, and paresthesia in both legs. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass located posteriorly and laterally to the left aspect of the dural sac at the L3 level. The initial diagnosis indicated PEMLDF, malignancy, spontaneous hematoma, or epidural abscess. L3/4 discography clearly showed leakage of the contrast medium into the posterior dural space, indicating PEMLDF. The lesion was identified intraoperatively as a herniated-disc fragment, consistent with the preoperative discography. Conclusion PEMDLF is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Discography is useful for the definitive diagnosis of PEMDLF prior to surgery.

Introduction: There are different techniques and interpretations of discography findings to determine it positive for the diagnosis of discogenic pain. This study aims to evaluate the frequency of use of discography findings for the diagnosis of low back pain of discogenic origin., Material and Methods: A systematic review of the literature of the last 17 years was performed in MEDLINE and BIREME. A total of 625 articles were identified, 555 were excluded for duplicates, title and abstract. We obtained 70 full texts of which 36 were included in the analysis after excluding 34 for not meeting the inclusion criteria., Results: Among the criteria in discography to determine it as positive, 8 studies used only the pain response to the procedure, 28 studies used more than one criterion during discography to consider it as positive, the evaluation of at least one adjacent intervertebral disc with a negative result was necessary in 26 studies to consider a discography as positive. Five studies formally expressed the use of the technique described by SIS/IASP to determine a discography as positive., Conclusions: Pain in response to contrast medium injection, assessed with the visual analogue pain scale ≥6, was the most used criterion in the studies included in this review. Although there are already criteria to determine a discography as positive, the use of different techniques and interpretations of discography findings to determine a positive discography for low back pain of discogenic origin persists., (Copyright © 2023 SECOT. Purpose: Anterior column pain refers to axial low back pain (LBP) originating from the intervertebral disc or vertebral endplates (discogenic or vertebrogenic pain). We sought to assess the safety and effectiveness of intradiscal steroid injection (IDSI) in diagnosing and treating patients with LBP arising from the anterior column., Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of 66 patients who underwent 77 injections in an outpatient, private practice setting for the treatment of chronic lower back with history and physical exam findings indicating an origin within the anterior column and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of Modic changes associated with disc degeneration of grade 4 or above on the modified Pfirrmann scale. Patients reported pain as measured by the numerical rating scale (NRS) before the injection, at the time of their follow-up, and their maximum pain relief. The primary outcome was the change in NRS before and after the injections. The secondary outcome determined if the changes in the subjects' NRS met the minimal clinically important change (MCIC) criteria for LBP. We conducted a statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test., Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the pre-injection and follow-up NRS scores (p < 0.001) and a significant difference between pre-injection and maximum relief NRS scores (p < 0.001). Study Design: Retrospective matched cohort study.Objective: To determine if low-pressure lumbar provocation discography (PD) results in long-term accelerated disc degeneration, internal disc disruption, or disc herniation in patients with symptomatic low back pain (LBP).Summary Of Background Data: Study of subjects without clinically-significant LBP suggests that high-pressure PD may accelerate disc degeneration.Methods: Consecutive patients with symptomatic LBP who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), PD, and repeat MRI more than 7 years later, but did not undergo subsequent spinal fusion surgery, were included. Punctured discs were matched (1:2 to 1:4) to corresponding discs in a control cohort by age, BMI, Pfirrmann score (±2), and presence of disc herniation; control cohort inclusion required MRIs for symptomatic LBP, separated by more than 7 years. The primary outcome of the study was a progression in Pfirrmann score category (I-II, III-IV, V). MRI disc-to-CSF T2 signal-intensity ratio, disc height, disc herniations, high intensity zones (HIZs), and Modic changes were assessed.Results: Baseline and follow-up MRIs were available for 77 discs exposed to PD, and for 260 discs in the matched control cohort. There was no difference in the proportion of punctured discs that advanced in Pfirrmann score category in the PD group (17%, 95% CI 9-27%) compared with corresponding discs in the Control group (21%, 95% CI 17-27%), P = 0.3578, or in non-punctured discs in the PD group (35%, 95% CI 21-51%) compared with corresponding discs in the Control group (34%, 95% CI 27-42%), P = 0.1169. There were no differences in disc-to-CSF T2 signal-intensity ratio, presence of disc herniations, HIZs, or Modic changes following puncture in the PD versus matched cohort discs or in the non-punctured PD cohort discs versus corresponding control cohort discs (P > 0.05).Conclusion: Patients with symptomatic LBP who underwent low-pressure PD, but who did not undergo a subsequent spinal fusion surgery, developed disc degeneration and new disc herniations at a similar rate to corresponding discs in matched control patients.Level Of Evidence: 3. This article focuses on Marvin Gaye's involvement with music related to the "middle of the road" (MOR) market within the American music business between 1961 and 1979. From 1961 to 1966, in addition to his work as a teen idol, Gaye performed regularly in supper clubs, released four albums of standards material, and recorded dozens of other related songs that were eventually shelved. In a fascinating turn, he worked extensively on a series of unreleased tracks between 1967 and 1979, using experimental techniques to revise, reinterpret, and recompose melodies over already completed backing music. Gaye's interest in ballads connects to a different tradition of American music from his soul hits, drawing on the legacy of 1920s crooning, mainstream swing vocalists like Frank Sinatra, and African American forebears such as Nat "King" Cole and Sam Cooke. This article makes a number of new claims about Gaye's career trajectory: that his method of composing with his voice in the studio-building up complex textures from multiple takes and composing lyrics and melody directly to tape-began as early as 1967, well before his better-known experiments for What's Going On in 1970; that the popular, sexuality-charged music of his final decade was an extension of his work with romantic balladry in the 1960s; and that his interest in standards continued much farther into his career than is suggested by his official discography. Purpose: Discography can increase disc degeneration, but the influence of different discography variables on the degeneration of discs has not been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of discography variables of needle diameter, type of contrast agent and volume of contrast agent on disc degeneration.Methods: Three separate experiments examined needle diameter, and type and volume of contrast agent. Coccygeal discs (Co7-10) adult male rats were used. X-rays were used to detect the disc height degeneration index at 1, 2 and 4 weeks after the procedure. MRI was used to study the changes in the disc structure and the signal intensity of IVD 2 and 4 weeks after the procedure. Disc water content and histology were measured at 4 weeks after the procedure.Results: A 21-g needle significantly increased disc degeneration when compared with the 30-g needle as detected by X-ray, MRI, disc water content and histology (P < 0.05). Two microlitres of iodine significantly decreased the disc MRI signal and water content at 4 weeks compared with the same volume of normal saline (P < 0.05). Three microlitres of iodine significantly increased disc degeneration when compared with 2 µl iodine, as detected by X-ray, MRI, disc water content and histology at 4 weeks (P < 0.05).Conclusion: To reduce disc degeneration after discography, it may be best to choose a smaller needle size, minimize the use of contrast agent and use non-ionic contrast agents with osmotic pressure similar to the intervertebral disc.
