There is appetite in the UK to better measure the impact of domestic violence and abuse (DVA) interventions on children. The spread of outcomes-based commissioning means outcome measurement is no longer just the territory of academic researchers but is now firmly within the purview of practitioners and policy makers. However, outcomes measured in trials only partially represent the views of those delivering and using services with respect to how success should be defined and captured. Even within trials there is huge inconsistency in the definition and measurement of important endpoints. This yields a body of evidence that is difficult to make sense of, defeating the ends for which it was produced - to improve the response to children and families who have experienced abuse. Development of Core Outcome Sets (COS) is seen as a solution to this problem, by establishing consensus across key stakeholder groups regarding a minimum standard for outcome measurement in trials, and increasingly in service delivery contexts. To date COS development has addressed outcomes relating to health conditions or interventions, with limited application to public health challenges. We reflect on our efforts to develop a COS to evaluate psychosocial interventions for children and families experiencing DVA. We highlight the value of COS development as a mechanism for improving evidence quality and the response to families experiencing abuse. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common problem faced by women after childbirth. The adverse effects of PPD upon the maternal-infant relationship and child development reinforce the need for early identification and effective treatment models. This study intends to add to the existing knowledge about the prevalence of PPD and its associated risk factors in the hilly region in Himachal Pradesh. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 426 women presenting for a postpartum visit at 6 weeks postpartum. Sociodemographic characteristics were recorded on a pretested questionnaire. Women were screened for postpartum depression using a validated EPDS (Edinburgh postnatal depression scale) prestructured questionnaire with 10 questions. Women were divided into two groups based on screening results. The overall prevalence of PPD in the study was 17.4%. Out of sociodemographic factors, age (0.010) and family structure (0.008) were found to be significant. Nuclear family women were more prone to PPD. Domestic abuse (<0.001) is also a leading factor for PPD. By comparing obstetric and gender issues, it was found that the total number of previous living children (p-value <0.001), gender of previous living children (<0.001), and gender of newborns (<0.001) are the major determining factors of PPD. Another factor that was significantly related to PPD was an unwanted pregnancy. We have found a high prevalence of PPD in our region that does not have screening protocols for the screening of such patients. The complexities of domestic abuse as both a lived experience and a crime generate unique communicative challenges at the scene of emergency police call-outs. Space is a prominent and complex feature of these ecounters, entailing a juxtaposition of the institutional and the private, whereby frontline officers seek evidence of abuse from victims in the same space in which the abuse occurred. This paper explores how speakers manage one evidentially salient aspect of these encounters: officers' advancement into victim's immediate personal space to inspect and photograph their injuries. As compared with the attention dedicated to preserving vulnerable victims' personal 'bubble' of space in formal investigative interviews, first response guidelines allow participants more leeway to adapt their behaviour according to the unpredictable demands of each situation. I present two case studies here which form part of a wider study of first response call-outs to domestic abuse incidents reported to a UK police force. The audio data have been extracted from police body-worn video footage and transcribed, with visual information represented intralinearly. Through conversation analysis, I examine the microinteractional means by which personal space is made relevant and consequential to the unfolding talk, with a focus on how ownership rights and control over the space are (re)constructed discursively. Analysis demonstrates that entering victims' personal space can be managed in ways that either reinforce their disempowered position or afford them some control. The findings have implications in relation to victims' potential vulnerability, police-victim relations and the nature of the evidence produced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Growing evidence suggests that companion animals play a significant role in the lives of victims of domestic abuse. The aim of this paper is to extend this research to include a broader range of domestic abuse victims. Drawing from 45 face-to-face interviews with participants who identify as “entangled victims,” this research evidences a complex and varied relationship between entangled victims and companion animals. In this light, policy changes regarding domestic violence victimization are encouraged. Specifically, changes to the power and control wheel, conceptualization of who constitutes a domestic abuse victim, and intervention strategies recognizing that companion animals can be used as both lifelines and weapons. Intimate partner abuse (IPA) is a public health crisis that disproportionately impacts indigenous women. We know little about rates and correlates of IPA victimization (IPAV) and abuse directed at one's partner (ADP) among indigenous women caregivers (people who take care of children). The purpose of the current study was to address this critical gap in the literature. Participants were 44 indigenous women caregivers in the United States in a current relationship who completed a survey. Most women reported IPAV and ADP experiences in the past 6 months, and IPAV and ADP abuse directed at partner were positively associated. Further, IPAV was positively associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), participants' engagement in harsh parenting, and depressive symptoms. IPAV was negatively associated with age, income, indigenous cultural identity, and social support. ADP was positively associated with ACEs, harsh parenting, and depressive symptoms. ADP was negatively associated with age and income. ADP was not associated with indigenous cultural identity and social support. These data suggest the urgency with which efforts are needed to prevent and respond to IPA among indigenous women caregivers, especially those who are younger and of lower income, and that culturally grounded initiatives that seek to build social support may be especially impactful. Domestic abuse in childhood is seriously impactful, but very little literature uses a critical lens to consider implications for counsellors and psychotherapists working with young adults following domestic abuse in childhood. This article draws on research that explored 10 young women's accounts of transitions to adulthood after domestic abuse in childhood. Interviews with young adult women in England were conducted and a feminist dialogical narrative analysis was used. Findings suggest that socio-cultural structures and ideologies that shape dominant discourses about what growing up after domestic abuse in childhood means, and what "successful" adult femininity looks like, shaped how women made sense of their experiences. This has implications for counsellors and psychotherapists working with this client group. This article concludes that storytelling could be a powerful therapeutic tool, and attention to power, ambiguity and tensions when working with this client group might facilitate and generate important meaning-making and knowledge in therapy. Many women who experience intimate partner violence seek the expertise of psychologists to support their healing. However, there is a gap in the research about what women want from their psychologists. We interviewed 20 women survivors who had seen psychologists. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we constructed three themes: see all of me, see me for my expertise, and don't impose an agenda on me. We found that often psychologists acted as experts imposing their own agendas, rather than supporting survivors to make their own decisions. We discuss this in relation to the link between knowledge and power through dominant social science discourses and explore how resistance to this dominant discourse was taken up by many women. This article elucidates the approach Scotland has taken to tackling the issue of domestic abuse, arguing that feminists were an important driving force not simply in placing the issue of domestic abuse on the public and political agenda, but in successfully establishing the issue as a gender-based problem. The policy and service implications of a gender-based approach has led to Scotland being identified as an exemplar. We illustrate some of the achievements in addressing domestic abuse including the new Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act (DASA) but argue that for this work to be successful, domestic abuse needs to continue to be conceptualised as a consequence of continuing gender inequality. Background: Increased incidence and/or reporting of domestic abuse (DA) accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic. National lockdowns and enforced social isolation necessitated new ways of supporting victims of DA remotely. Identification and Referral to Improve Safety (IRIS) is a programme to improve the response to domestic abuse in general practice, providing training for general practice teams and support for patients affected by DA, which has previously been proven effective and cost-effective [1–3]. The COVID-19 pandemic required the adaptation of the programme to online training and remote support. Methods: This study is mixed methods rapid research, which aimed to gather evidence around the relevance, desirability and acceptability of IRIS operating remotely. Quantitative IRIS referral data were triangulated with data from four surveys and 15 interviews. Participants were local IRIS teams, IRIS-trained clinicians, and victim-survivors supported by IRIS services. The study was designed using the Lean Impact approach, allowing quick evaluation of innovation and the impact of social interventions. We carried out a framework analysis of the interviews, which is a qualitative methodology widely used in policy and applied research that enables research teams to move from descriptive accounts to a conceptual explanation of findings [4, 5]. Results: We found that the adaptation to online training and support of IRIS was acceptable and desirable. Most clinicians felt confident addressing DA over the phone and online, although most were more confident face-to-face. While referrals to IRIS services initially declined in March 2020, numbers of referrals increased to pre-pandemic levels by July 2020. Patients felt well supported remotely, although patients who had previously experienced face-to-face support preferred it. Technology was the most frequently mentioned barrier to the change from face-to-face training and support to online training and remote support. Conclusions: This study contributes to practice by asserting the desirability and acceptability of training clinicians to be able to identify, ask about DA and refer to the IRIS programme during telephone/online consultations. This paper examines legitimacy in the criminal courts from the perspective of witnesses, an under-researched setting and participant group. Based on interviews with witnesses and observations of court proceedings, the paper provides a framework for examining how witnesses engage with the courts, arguing that 'engagement' can be used as a lens through which to understand legitimacy. The findings suggest that witnesses often display weak levels of engagement with the court process, which is indicative of strain in the ongoing legitimacy 'dialogue' (Bottoms and Tankebe 2012) between citizens and the state. Purpose: Johnson's typology of intimate partner violence, first published in 1995, intended to resolve the gender symmetry debate and alter the way scholars studied intimate partner violence. This scoping review explores the empirical reach of Johnson's typology over 25 years. Methods: Articles were identified through searches of four databases and were included if they were an empirical journal article with Johnson's typology central to the analysis (n = 82) and published between 1996 and 2020. Results: Empirical work reached its highest points in 2014 and 2016, with 10 articles published each year, but has since declined. The mean number of articles published per year is less than four (M = 3.28). Authorship appears to have diffused well, as there were 56 different lead authors of the 82 articles, and no one author contributed to more than 10% of the empirical work. Articles appeared in 37 journals and were heavily concentrated in journals on interpersonal violence and in the disciplines of Family Studies and Psychology. Conclusions: Empirical engagement with Johnson's typology is modest yet extends across a large number of independent authors and appears in journals across multiple disciplines. It is not clear why there has not been more empirical engagement given the widespread and increasing citation of Johnson's work, but perhaps this is part of the reason why the typology has not ended the gender symmetry debate. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and factors influencing domestic abuse victimization among high-income women in Japan, including physical, psychological, economic, and sexual abuse. The background factors and reality of domestic abuse faced by high-income women have not been sufficiently addressed, although some academic studies contend that economically disadvantaged women are more susceptible to domestic abuse. This study collected data from 359 high-income women in Japan using an online questionnaire survey. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the contributing factors. Approximately one-fifth of high-income women had suffered physical, economic, and sexual domestic abuse, and approximately two-fifths had experienced psychological violence. Adverse childhood experiences, the degree of approval of traditional gender norms, quarrels over opposing views on traditional gender norms, and partners' education levels considerably influenced the prevalence of domestic abuse among high-income female victims. In contrast with the literature, the earnings gap between female victims and their partners did not yield meaningful results. This study examines the experiences of four types of domestic abuse among high-income women in East Asia and highlights the factors that contribute to it, as exemplified by Japan, which is a research direction that has not received sufficient attention. Previous research highlighted that a fundamental rethink of the measurement of domestic abuse was needed in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). The research reported here aimed to develop and test new questions on domestic abuse for the CSEW to improve the headline prevalence measure, including frequency of abuse, to develop a way of measuring controlling or coercive behavior within the overall prevalence measure, and to develop a measure of the impact of abuse. The research included focus groups and interviews with victims (n = 27) to assess a set of draft questions and cognitive testing of revised questions with victims and the general public (n = 42). A final set of 24 questions was developed for use with victims of both intimate partner and family abuse, with an additional question for family abuse. The new questions were found to echo victim experiences and were deemed acceptable and reliable measures by victims and the general public for domestic abuse, including controlling and/or coercive behavior and impact. An analytical approach was recommended to improve the headline prevalence measure of domestic abuse by establishing 'high' and 'low' abuse profiles using measures of both behavior and impact. Research from the CDC empirically proves that adverse childhood events (ACE) increase the likelihood of mental and physical health concerns. Many traumatic childhood events are avoidable if teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers, counsellors, lawyers, judges, and law enforcement understand the most recent domestic violence research and best practices for protecting children. Relevant domestic violence research and laws are discussed. Through changes to curriculum across disciplines, higher education could alter paradigms at the grass roots level and proactively reduce the number of traumatic events experienced by children. The copious research on formal help-seeking of women abused by intimate partners, rarely narrows to counseling services. This mixed-methods secondary analysis examined 660 Canadian women and their use and impressions of counseling. The women's racial backgrounds were 50.8% Indigenous, 43.1% White, and 6.1% visible minority. Women who did not seek counseling reported less serious IPV and fewer PTSD symptoms. Most rated counseling as quite a bit/very helpful (77–87%), with the exception of marital counseling (8.3%). The women commented about IPV-specific counseling, general counseling, faith-base, addictions, couples counseling, and Indigenous traditions. Comments revealed strengths and concerns, including counselors lacking IPV knowledge and difficulties accessing resources. Implications are provided for clinicians and researchers. Domestic abuse continues to be a growing concern across the globe where the overwhelming majority of victims are women. Women also tend to experience more severe forms of violence, which includes murder. There is growing recognition that children who live in households where domestic abuse exists are directly harmed and often show psychological problems from an early age while other children present with no symptoms and appear unaffected. Domestic abuse is rife and its impact minimised and normalised by society when it occurs in intimate partner relationships. This paper highlights the complexities of domestic abuse noting its many presentations and how siloed responses from various organisations tackled to address it are inadequate. Very little is known about men's options for coping with abusive relationships and post-separation abuse in Estonia, in North-Eastern Europe. There are however several indicators that indicate men are struggling to cope. The impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) and post-separation abuse on men is known to be detrimental on physical and mental health. Methods: This paper examines male victims of IPV in a part of Europe that have some of the most visible consequences of men's failing health. Results and implications: The cross-sectional national Safety Survey indicates a higher prevalence of men report being exposed to IPV, and men as victims of domestic homicide and intimate partner homicide are not uncommon. The summarized findings illustrate how the sparse knowledge on men as victims of IPV can be used as platform for research efforts aimed at understanding men's roles in IPV in Estonia. This paper sets out to interrogate the use of master and counter narratives in UK Parliamentary Select Committee debates surrounding the passage of the Domestic Abuse Bill (now Domestic Abuse Act 2021) in Parliament. These debates are a site that allow for the telling of counter narratives in order to challenge the narrative of the normative socio-legal position regarding domestic violence and abuse (DVA). With its roots in the patriarchy and stereotypical gender roles that foster violence and abuse, the issue with such a narrative is that it fails to recognise the complex, nuanced nature of domestic violence and abuse. As a result, it maintains the status quo and is disconnected from the realities of DVA. The work of this paper, then, is to consider the dialogue between the masterplot of DVA, the Domestic Abuse Bill, and the attempts of counter narratives to act as discursive resistance. It will consider what is the true power of these anti-hegemonic stories in exposing the problems with the master-narrative. Counter narratives submitted by organisations, activists, academics and survivors of DVA during the Committee Stage of the debates were not uniform, monolithic or pure, and were often plagued with inconsistencies and contradictions with one another. Characterised as the same but different, these counter narratives did not act in strict opposition to the hegemonic master narrative. As a result, this paper will draw on a case study which examines three different reports submitted during the Committee Stage of the Debates to consider the following questions: in what way can counter narratives act as discursive resistance in law reform efforts and why are some more successful than others in dismantling the master narrative through the mechanism of the law? Overall, the argument put forward is that it is the counter narratives with a greater illocutionary force and greater narratological power which can be a successful tool in law reform and effect a shift in the master narrative of domestic violence and abuse. This article discusses the recent Forum on Domestic Violence and the Operation of Article 13(1)(b) of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction sponsored by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The article describes the reason for the Forum and highlights some of the important content that emerged at the event. Responding to domestic abuse is a key element of social work practice, in both child protection and adult safeguarding. This article sets out the ways in which rapid technological advances are being co-opted by perpetrators of domestic abuse to create new ways of exerting control. After starting with a brief reminder of recent UK legislative changes around domestic abuse, the article outlines the main ways in which technologies, including mobile phones and other Internet-enabled devices, are used by abusers for surveillance, monitoring, tracking and otherwise controlling all aspects of the lives of those they target. The article then moves on to consider how some groups may be at greater risk than others of technology-facilitated domestic abuse (TFDA), including women with insecure immigration status, women with learning disabilities and younger women and girls. Finally, the key social work tool for assessing risk in relation to domestic abuse is critiqued as lacking sufficient focus on TFDA. The article concludes by suggesting what individual social workers and local authorities need to do in order to better respond as TFDA continues to evolve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Domestic Violence and Abuse (DVA) is a persistent public health problem in the UK. Healthcare settings offer an opportunity to ask patients about DVA, either opportunistically or in response to the presence of injuries. However, it has been suggested that dental practices and dental teams have not been actively involved supporting adult patients when presenting with injuries that might have resulted from DVA. This qualitative study was conducted to satisfy the evaluative component of the Dentistry Responding in Domestic Violence and Abuse (DRiDVA) feasibility study. Methods In total, 30 participants took part in the study; nine associate dentists and practice principals/owners took part in one-to-one interviews and 21 auxiliary staff took part across two focus group discussion sessions. Data were analysed using the seven step Framework Analysis process. Result Three key themes were identified from the data, focusing on barriers to enquiring about domestic violence and abuse, Facilitators of identification and referral of DVA in dental settings, and recommendations for further adaptation of intervention to dental settings. Conclusion DVA training coupled with robust referral pathways to a named specialist DVA advocate increases knowledge and awareness of the signs of DVA and confidence in making onward referrals. Further research is needed to understand how to increase dental professional willingness to ask patients about DVA.
