COVID-19 causes unimaginable fatality among the elderly people worldwide. Amid the crisis, elderly people need tangible and intangible support for them to deal with the dilemmas, anxiety, loneliness, and even suicidal tendencies. This article discusses on how the elderly has been affected by COVID-19 that created a worsening situation and exacerbated detrimental health outcomes among older people. It examines the impact of COVID-19 to geriatric health to which governments, health agencies, and scientific community need to address. Proposed strategies in this article may mitigate the health risks of the elderly due to a global health crisis. Older adults can use digital platforms and digital health technologies to build social relationships and mitigate their health care needs. Recommendations for research agenda on geriatric health are discussed particularly in the context of ageism amid the pandemic. This review draws on over 70 studies spanning 2000 to 2023 to analyze the causal effect of health on educational outcomes. Health and health system interventions during the prenatal, infant, and childhood period impact longer-run educational attainment and performance. The magnitude of these effects is both statistically and economically significant, comparable in size to impacts on educational outcomes of interventions found in the literature. These impacts of health and health system interventions differ across gender and socioeconomic status, illustrating how health and health systems can exacerbate or mitigate educational inequalities. Background: The purpose of this study was to provide recommendations to an organization trying to effectively implement nontraditional sport programming to reach a broader range of children and engage them in physical activity. Methods: This consultation-based qualitative study used data collected from 7 after-school sport program sites. Data were collected through participant observation and semistructured interviews with program instructors. The data were analyzed in 2 steps. First, descriptive coding was used to group observations and responses from each question, then pattern coding was used to find emerging themes. Researchers then compared both within and across program sites. Results: Researchers found that enjoyment, ability, and language influenced interactions; age-appropriateness, engagement, and curriculum design impacted curriculum; and instructor roles and ongoing mentoring impacted effectiveness of training/support. A fundamental disconnect was evident between the program vision and the instructors' interpretation (and therefore, implementation) of the vision. Conclusions: Recommendations offered for practice include continued focus on curriculum design that can engage children at each level of development (grades K-5) and increased training and field support for instructors to ensure intended implementation of the programming. Latinos face healthcare access barriers and are highly religious. Church-based health interventions could help address these disparities. We conducted a systematic review of church-based health interventions among Latinos using multiple search terms and databases. The 21 articles reviewed represented 19 interventions. Only six were tested through full-scale randomized controlled trials and five had statistically significant improvements in health-related outcomes. Most (16) utilized groups classes, eight promoted screening or preventive services, and three provided these on-site. Few intervened at multiple levels (e.g., individual, group, and community) and only three utilized pastors' sermons to deliver health-related messages. Church-based health interventions among Latinos are nascent, with only a handful of full-scale trials. Various pilot studies demonstrating feasibility across diverse health conditions suggest model adaptability. Larger studies with objectively measured outcomes and interventions that address multiple levels and structural issues are needed to ensure improvements in Latinos' access and health. Background: Women and children suffer disproportionately in armed-conflicts. Since 2011, the protracted Syrian crisis has fragmented the pre-existing healthcare system. Despite the massive health needs of women and children, the delivery of key reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH&N) interventions, and its underlying factors are not well-understood in Syria. Our objective was to document intervention coverage indicators and their implementation challenges inside Syria during conflict. Methods: We conducted 1) a desk review to extract RMNCAH&N intervention coverage indicators inside Syria during the conflict; and 2) qualitative interviews with decision makers and health program implementers to explore reasons behind provision/non-provision of RMNCAH&N interventions, and the rationale informing decisions, priorities, collaborations and implementation. We attempt to validate findings by triangulating data from both sources. Results: Key findings showed that humanitarian organisations operating in Syria adopted a complex multi-hub structure, and some resorted to remote management to improve accessibility to certain geographic areas. The emergency response prioritised trauma care and infectious disease control. Yet, with time, humanitarian organisations successfully advocated for prioritising maternal and child health and nutrition interventions given evident needs. The volatile security context had implications on populations' healthcare seeking behaviors, such as women reportedly preferring home births, or requesting Caesarean-sections to reduce insecurity risks. Additional findings were glaring data gaps and geographic variations in the availability of data on RMNCAH&N indicators. Adaptations of the humanitarian response included task-shifting to overcome shortage in skilled healthcare workers following their exodus, outreach activities to enhance access to RMNCAH&N services, and operating in 'underground' facilities to avoid risk of attacks. Conclusion: The case of Syria provides a unique perspective on creative ways of managing the humanitarian response and delivering RMNCAH&N interventions, mainly in the multi-hub structure and use of remote management, despite encountered challenges. The scarcity of RMNCAH&N data is a tremendous challenge for both researchers and implementing agencies, as it limits accountability and monitoring, thus hindering the evaluation of delivered interventions. There is growing consensus around the limited attention given to documenting the process of intervention development, specifically the role of qualitative research. In this article, we seek to describe a missing piece of this process: how qualitative research, and related methodologies and theories, informs intervention development. We use our research as a case study of "reflexive intervention development." We begin by describing our interview study, consisting of 23 in-depth interviews with women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and go on to detail our methodological framework and research team. We then explain how this interview study directly informed our development of the intervention materials, allowing us to attend carefully to language and its potential implications for women. We conclude by inviting researchers to reflect on the knowledge production process that is inherent in intervention development to consider not only their role in this process but also the role of qualitative research. Background and Aim: Economic evaluation of health interventions by comparing the relevant costs and benefits will result in optimum allocation of resources and increasing the effectiveness of the health system and, through improving equity and increasing accessibility to health services, will lead to increased effectiveness of the health system. The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate the Cost Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) studies on health interventions worldwide. Materials and Methods: A critical review of the published CEA studies on health interventions was conducted. Seven databases including PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Web of science, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer Link, and SID were searched between 1975 and 2018, using appropriate keywords. The retrieved articles were evaluated using the Drummond (2005) quality assessment checklist. Overall, 173 articles met the entry criteria and were included in this study. Results: CEA of health-related interventions were classified into six categories, namely, studies on immunization, education, nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases prevention, gynecological diseases prevention and vector-borne diseases and, eventually, cost-effective interventions were identified. Further analysis of the data showed that the methods used in health intervention CEA studies are very heterogeneous and lack sufficient scientific quality especially in developing countries. Researchers working in this area should pay more attention when designing studies and follow valid guidelines for CEA, particularly as regards research methods, sample size, CEA model, cost and benefit calculations, determining effectiveness, timeframe and, finally, analysis of the sensitivity and validity the research data. Conclusion: The number of cost effectiveness analysis and cost utility studies has increased greatly during the last two decades. In order to improve the quality of these studies it is essential to revise the guidelines and procedures for economic evaluation of health interventions and train and update researchers in this area. When it comes to health(-risk) behaviors, researchers are apt to consider how to change behaviors from a top-down approach (i.e., using the conscious, reflective, deliberate system) even though much of human behavior is determined by bottom-up processes (i.e., the nonconscious, reflexive, impulsive system). Given that researchers have proposed that interventions that target nonconscious processes underlying health(-risk) behaviors may prove to be more effective than interventions that target conscious processes, we argue that understanding the ways in which mimicking and modeling affect health(-risk) behaviors is a critical—albeit largely unexplored—domain. In this paper, we review existing evidence that people mimic and model a broad range of health(-risk) behaviors: specifically, the cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, (un)healthy eating, and physical activity of others. We then discuss the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying these effects. Next, we outline moderators: specifically, we discuss when mimicking and modeling are more likely to occur, who is more likely to mimic and model, as well as who is more likely to be mimicked and modeled. Background: Equity in health has become an important policy agenda around the world, prompting health economists to advance methods to enable the inclusion of equity in economic evaluations. Among the methods that have been proposed to explicitly include equity are the weighting analysis, equity impact analysis, and equity trade-off analysis. This is a new development and a comprehensive overview of trends and concepts of health equity in economic evaluations is lacking. Thus, our objective is to map the current state of the literature with respect to how health equity is considered in economic evaluations of health interventions reported in the academic and gray literature. Methods: We will conduct a scoping review to identify and map evidence on how health equity is considered in economic evaluations of health interventions. We will search relevant electronic, gray literature and key journals. We developed a search strategy using text words and Medical Subject Headings terms related to health equity and economic evaluations of health interventions. Articles retrieved will be uploaded to reference manager software for screening and data extraction. Two reviewers will independently screen the articles based on their titles and abstracts for inclusion, and then will independently screen a full text to ascertain final inclusion. A simple numerical count will be used to quantify the data and a content analysis will be conducted to present the narrative; that is, a thematic summary of the data collected. Discussion: The results of this scoping review will provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence on how health equity is considered in economic evaluations of health interventions and its research gaps. It will also provide key information to decision-makers and policy-makers to understand ways to include health equity into the prioritization of health interventions when aiming for a more equitable distribution of health resources. This article argues that social capital health research should move beyond a mere focus on social cohesion and network perspectives to integrate an institutional approach into the development of social capital health interventions. An institutional perspective, which is unique in its emphasis on linking social capital in addition to the bonding and bridging forms, contextualises social capital, allowing researchers to confront the complexity of social relationships. This perspective allows for the construction of interventions that draw on the resources of diverse actors, particularly the state. One intervention strategy with the potential to create community linkages involves lay community health workers (LCHWs), individuals who are trained to perform a variety of health‐related functions but lack a formal professional health education. This article begins with a review of the institutional social capital‐building literature. It then goes on to briefly review the social capital and health literature and discuss the state of intervention research. Thereafter, it describes LCHWs and discusses studies that have utilised LCHWs to tackle community health problems. In doing so, this article presents an institutional‐based systematic framework for how LCHWs can build social capital, including a discussion of the ways in which LCHWs can successfully promote bonding, bridging and linking social capital. Background: Family and community nurses (FCNs) play a crucial role in delivering primary care to patients within their homes and communities. A key aspect of their role involves various health interventions, which are influenced by their unique competencies, such as health promotion, advanced clinical knowledge, and strong interpersonal skills. However, it is essential to understand which specific health outcomes these interventions impact to better understand the relationship between FCNs' skills and the health results., Objective: This study aims to outline the steps we will take to develop a set of core outcomes. These outcomes will be particularly sensitive to the health interventions carried out by FCNs, providing a clearer picture of their practice's impact., Methods: A Delphi survey will be used for this research, conducted from January to December 2024. The process will involve 5 steps and input from 3 stakeholder categories. These stakeholders will help identify a preliminary list of outcomes that will form the basis of our core outcome set (COS)., Results: This guideline will be beneficial for a wide range of stakeholders involved in COS development, including COS developers, trialists, systematic reviewers, journal editors, policy makers, and patient groups. As of January 2024, we have successfully completed the first stage of the study, with the stakeholder group approving the reported outcomes and assigning participant lists for each stakeholder group., Conclusions: This study will provide a roadmap for identifying the key health outcomes influenced by the interventions of FCNs. Aims: Immigrant women in Norway have lower cervical cancer screening participation than non-immigrant women. Our aim in this study was to assess whether the observed increase in screening participation during 2012-2017 was different between Norwegian-born women and immigrant women., Methods: Data were collected from three national registries. The study included 1,409,561 women, categorized according to country of birth and immigrant background: (i) Norway, Norwegian parents; (ii) Norway, immigrant parent(s); (iii) Europe, excluding Norway; (iv) Africa; (v) Asia, including Turkey; and (vi) other countries. Trends and differences between groups were analyzed using Poisson regression analyses with adjustments for variables other studies have found to influence screening participation. Trends were assessed by including half-years as a continuous variable in the models and reported as prevalence ratios with 95% confidence intervals., Results: Screening participation increased in all groups, but was not statistically significant among women from Africa in the adjusted model. The highest increase was among Norwegian women, with a 2.2% increase per year. Interaction tests showed significantly smaller increases in screening among women born in Europe ( p interaction < 0.0001), Africa ( p interaction < 0.0001), Asia ( p  interaction < 0.0001), and countries in the "Other" category ( p interaction = 0.004). There was also a smaller increase among Norwegian-born women with one or more immigrant parent(s), but this was not significant ( p interaction = 0.178)., Conclusions: The gap in screening participation and the increasing differences in trends suggest that healthcare services do not reach all women in Norway to the same extent. Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the primary cause of mortality globally and invariably in India as well. The rapid upsurge in the prevalence of CVDs in India has created a pressing need to promote contemporary, sustainable, and cost-effective interventions to tackle the CVD burden. This systematic review integrates the research-based evidence of the cost-effectiveness of various interventions that can be adapted to control CVDs in India., Methods: Databases, namely, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Google Scholar, were searched for data on the economic evaluation of interventions targeting CVD based on the Indian population for a period of 30 years (1991-2021). Two reviewers assessed the articles for eligibility, and data were extracted from the shortlisted articles as per a predefined template, including the quantification of methodological aspects., Results: In total, 1249 studies were examined, out of which 23 completely met the inclusion criteria for full-text review. A total of 16 studies were based solely on the Indian population, while the rest (7) included South Asia/Asia for the intervention, of which India was a participant nation. Most of the economic evaluations targeted treatment-based or pharmacological interventions (14) for CVDs. The evaluations were based on Decision-based models (10), Randomized controlled Trials (RCTs) (9), and Observational studies (4). The cost-effectiveness ratio for the included studies exhibited a diverse range due to variations in methodological approaches, such as differences in study settings, populations, and inconsistencies in study design. The mean ICER (Incremental Cost-effectiveness ratio) for primordial and primary preventions was found to be 3073.8 (US $2022) and 17489.9 (US $2022), respectively. Moreover, the combined mean value for secondary and tertiary prevention was 2029.6 (US$2022)., Conclusion: The economic evidence of public health interventions are expanding, but their focus is restricted towards pharmacological interventions. There is an urgency to emphasize primordial and primary prevention for better outcomes in health economics decision-making. The purpose of this review was to systematically review the published research on the effect of self-compassion interventions on health behaviors. A self-regulation intervention was defined as participants engaged in goal-setting behavior, goal-directed behavior, monitoring, and/or adjusting health behavior. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this review. Self-compassion interventions were just as effective as other behavior change techniques at improving self-regulation of health behavior. The review discusses sample characteristics, study design, health behavior measures, self-compassion intervention implementation, and the theoretical frameworks of the studies, along with limitations of the research and suggestions for future researchers. Rapid population aging and the availability of sensors and intelligent objects motivate the development of healthcare systems; these systems, in turn, meet the needs of older adults by supporting them to accomplish their day-to-day activities. Collecting information regarding older adults daily activity potentially helps to detect abnormal behavior. Anomaly detection can subsequently be combined with real-time, continuous and personalized interventions to help older adults actively enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This paper introduces a system that uses a novel approach to generate personalized health feedback. The proposed system models user's daily behavior in order to detect anomalous behaviors and strategically generates interventions to encourage behaviors conducive to a healthier lifestyle. The system uses a Mamdani-type fuzzy rule-based component to predict the level of intervention needed for each detected anomaly and a sequential decision-making algorithm, Contextual Multi-armed Bandit, to generate suggestions to minimize anomalous behavior. Purpose: Health interventions based on theory may be more effective than those that are not. This review of reviews synthesizes all published randomized controlled trial (RCT) meta-analytic evidence from the last decade to examine whether theory-based interventions were found to be associated with more effective adult health behaviour change interventions.Methods: Systematic reviews including meta-analyses were identified by searching Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and CDSR. A narrative synthesis was used to summarize and analyse the evidence. Only reviews including RCTs of health behaviour change interventions with adults aged 18+ published from 2007 to 2017 were included.Results: Of 8,659 articles, nine systematic reviews met inclusion criteria. The majority of reviews (n = 8) suggested no increased effectiveness for theory-based compared to non-theory-based interventions for effectiveness of outcomes relating to health behaviour. Less than half of the RCTs included in the reviews reported the use of theory (85/183). Two reviews suggested interventions based on control theory, motivational interviewing, or self-determination theory were associated with greater effectiveness for physical activity and/or dietary interventions and outcomes. Methodological and reporting issues limit the conclusions.Conclusions: Theory-based interventions as currently operationalized in systematic reviews were not found to be more effective than non-theory-based interventions. Methodological and reporting issues at study and review level may not reflect the true utility of theory use within health behaviour interventions. The promotion of theory use may benefit from using a multifaceted argument, rather than a narrow focus of increased effectiveness. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? Theory use is regularly promoted by claiming that it will lead to more effective behaviour change interventions. Theory use has been frequently linked to effectiveness within systematic reviews of behaviour change interventions. The theory-effectiveness hypothesis has not been systematically examined at the systematic review level. What does this study add? Theory use as operationalized by systematic review authors was not associated with increased effectiveness within systematic reviews examining randomized controlled trials of behaviour change interventions in adults. Interventions based on control theory, motivational interviewing, or self-determination theory were associated with greater effectiveness for physical activity and/or dietary interventions and outcomes. Theory use should be promoted using a multifaceted argument, and assertions for increased effectiveness of theory-based interventions should only be used in domains where specific evidence exists to support this claim. Objective: To study the effect of zinc supplementation in children under 5 years of age from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) on anthropometry and prevalence of malnutrition. Design: Systematic review of randomized controlled trials and cluster randomized trials. Setting Low- and middle-income countries. Participants: 63 trials with zinc supplementation, incorporating data on 27372 children. Trials conducted exclusively in specifically diseased participants and in children with severe acute malnutrition were excluded. Intervention: Zinc supplementation, provided either as medicinal supplementation or through food fortification. Outcome Measures: (i)Anthropometry: weight, height, weight-for-height, mid-arm circumference, head circumference; (ii) Prevalence of malnutrition. Results: There was no evidence of effect on height-for-age Z score at the end of supplementation period (25 trials; 9165 participants; MD= 0.00 Z; 95% CI -0.07, 0.07; P=0.98; moderate quality evidence) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 57%; P<0.001) related to dose and duration of zinc between trials. There was little or no effect on change in height-for-age Z score (13 trials; 8852 participants; MD= 0.11 Z; 95% CI -0.00, 0.21; P=0.05), but the heterogeneity was considerable (I2=94%; P<0.001). There was no evidence of effect on length (6303 participants; MD= 1.18 cm; 95% CI -0.63, 2.99 cm, P=0.20; moderate quality evidence; considerable heterogeneity, I2=99%) but a little positive effect on change in length (19 trials; 10783 participants; MD= 0.43 cm; 95% CI 0.16, 0.70, P=0.002; moderate quality evidence; considerable heterogeneity, I2=93%). There was no evidence of effect on weight-for-age Z score or change in weight-for-age Z score but a little positive effect on weight (19 trials; 8851 study participants; MD= 0.23 kg; 95% CI 0.03, 0.42; P=0.02; considerable heterogeneity, I2=91%) and change in weight (kg) (23 trials; 10143 study participants; MD= 0.11 kg; 95% CI 0.05, 0.17, P<0.001, substantial heterogeneity, I2=80%). There was no evidence of effect on weight-for-height Z score, and mid upper arm circumference at the end of supplementation period, but there was a little positive effect on change in mid-arm circumference from baseline (8 trials; 1724 participants; MD = 0.09 cm; 95% CI 0.01, 0.16; P=0.03; no heterogeneity, I2=0%). Head circumference in zinc supplemented group was marginally higher compared to control (2966 study participants; MD= 0.39 cm; 95% CI 0.03, 0.75; P=0.03; substantial heterogeneity, I2=67%). There was no evidence of benefit in stunting (10 trials; 11838 study participants; RR= 1.0; 95% CI 0.95, 1.06; P=0.89; moderate quality evidence; no significant heterogeneity, I2=11%), wasting (7 trials; 8988 study participants; RR= 0.94; 95% CI 0.82, 1.06; P=0.31; moderate quality evidence; no significant heterogeneity, I2=13%) or underweight (7 trials; 8677 study participants; RR= 1.08; 95% CI 0.96, 1.21; P=0.19; moderate quality evidence; substantial heterogeneity, I2=73%). Conclusion: Available evidence suggests that zinc supplementation probably leads to little or no improvement in anthropometric indices and malnutrition (stunting, underweight and wasting) in children under five years of age in LMICs. Aims: The present study examined, from a qualitative perspective, the perceptions of health held by overweight participants in a Danish weight-loss program. Methods: The study was a narrative in-depth interview study with 12 participants; eight women and four men. Results: The overweight and obese individuals did not lack information about health, diet, and exercise. Rather, their personal understandings of health and weight loss turned out to be of greater significance than the official health guidelines. The participants created coherent idiomatic narratives in which they were not personally responsible for their overweight. Conclusion: The participants were able to tell socially acceptable narratives of a life of overweight and inability to lose weight. Fostering self-efficacy has been shown to positively impact health outcomes among youth, yet little research has considered how self-efficacy is affected across multiple health variables, especially among youth already considered at-risk as overweight or obese. Using Self-Efficacy Theory, the purpose of this study was to examine health variables including physical activity, nutrition, and behavioral health and their influence on children's self-efficacy. Participants were 21 boys and girls aged between 8 and 13 years who were classified as overweight or obese and enrolled in a year-long afterschool program in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Participants completed two interviews and one drawing with narration designed to capture the children's perceptions and feelings. Three major themes emerged: 1) emotions and behavior, 2) impact of modeling, observation, and feedback and 3) being active and eating well feels good. Findings indicate that afterschool programming can be effective in fostering self-efficacy among at-risk youth by employing a broad curriculum and high levels of feedback and demonstrations. Finally, results suggest imagery could be an effective tool in such programs and improving mood may lead to enhanced healthful behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While studies have unveiled the implications of the bubonic plague outbreak in colonial Lagos in the areas of town planning, environmental health and trade, there is a dearth of scholarly writings on the multiplex nature of the biomedical, Christian, Muslim, non-Christian and non-Muslim African responses to the epidemic outbreak. Based on the historical analysis of colonial medical records, newspaper reports, interviews and the literature, this paper concludes that the multiplex and transcultural nature of local responses to the bubonic plague in Lagos disavow the Western biomedical triumphalist claims to epidemic control in Africa during colonial rule. Identifying subgroups of citizens with varying levels of self-sufficiency in a large local or regional population provides local government with essential input for providing matching services and well-grounded spending of health and well-being expenditures. This paper identifies self-sufficiency levels of citizens by segmenting a broad adult population. We used data from a citizen survey based on a randomly selected response group containing questions on a wide range of topics, including finances, health and living conditions, and complemented these data with registration data, including information on housing type and household composition. We conducted a latent class cluster analysis using six indicators: perception of making ends meet , perceived health , quality of life , self-efficacy , access to social support and social network. High scores on the indicators translate to high levels of self-sufficiency. We used a biased-adjusted, three-step approach to characterise the segments. Six meaningful segments were identified and labelled as 'highly self-sufficient,' 'self-sufficient – medium access to social support,' 'self-sufficient – medium self-efficacy,' 'moderately self-sufficient – low self-efficacy & high social network,' 'moderately self-sufficient – low access to social support/social network & high perceived health' and 'not self-sufficient.' At a macro level, perception of making ends meet and quality of life have discriminating value in assessing self-sufficiency. For a more detailed differentiation between groups with similar levels of self-sufficiency, perceived health , self-efficacy , access to social support, and social network are valuable indicators. Overall, this study introduces a comprehensive tool to assess self-sufficiency in larger groups of citizens by using a parsimonious number of indicators. Local and regional governments can apply this tool to effectively assess the self-sufficiency levels of their population and signal potentially vulnerable groups. Background: Child vaccination is perhaps the first line of defense to ensure a healthy society. Unfortunately, the coverage of child vaccination in Pakistan is poor resulting in unnecessary yet preventable deaths. This study investigated the determinants and reasons for not vaccinating children in Pakistan. Materials and Methods: The study used the Pakistan Integrated Household Survey/Household Integrated Economic Survey 2001-2002 data. Demographic, distance to health facility, poverty status, literacy and education, and location of residence were used as determinants of nonimmunization of children. Descriptive statistics including frequency distribution, proportions for categorical variables and mean for continuous variables, and logistic regression analysis were done using the Stata 11.0. Results: Almost 7.73% children in Pakistan were never immunized. More than 87.4% of these lived in the rural areas. Prevalence of nonimmunization was highest in Balochistan compared to other provinces. Large households appeared to have increased risk of a child not being vaccinated. Moreover, low literacy and education of the head of the household and the spouse was also associated with low vaccination coverage. Distance from the health facility was found to be another factor related to nonimmunization of children. Increase in per capita income significantly decreased the risk of missing vaccinations. Conclusions: Prevention and immunization programs should focus more on high-risk regions such as Balochistan and rural areas. Literacy, education, and economic status were among the other significant factors associated with low vaccination rates, which need a special focus in the public policy to achieve the target of a healthy society.

Universal health coverage (UHC) is high on the global health agenda, and priority setting is fundamental to the fair and efficient pursuit of this goal. In a recent editorial, Rob Baltussen and colleagues point to the need to go beyond evidence on cost-effectiveness and call for evidence-informed deliberative processes when setting priorities for UHC. Such processes are crucial at every step on the path to UHC, and hopefully we will see intensified efforts to develop and implement processes of this kind in the coming years. However, if this does happen, it will be essential to ensure a sufficiently broad scope in at least two respects. First, the design of evidence-informed priority-setting processes needs to go beyond a simple view on the relationship between evidence and policy and adapt to a diverse set of factors shaping this relationship. Second, these processes should go beyond a focus on clinical services to accommodate also public health interventions. Together, this can help strengthen priority-setting processes and bolster progress towards UHC and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Aim: The aim of this study was to develop and to validate the self-administered Falun health instrument. An additional aim was to test its applicability in measuring people’s lifestyles linked to health. Methods: In 2002, an instrument was constructed containing questions regarding the hazardous use of alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy diets and insufficient physical activity. A pilot study using the instrument was assessed between 2002 and 2006. In Sweden, it was further expanded and tested during the years 2004–2014 among a total of 1295 people. Results: Face validity was evaluated among colleagues and experts for clarity and completeness resulting in minor adjustments of some questions. With the test–retest method, the self-administered Falun health questionnaire showed a positive and high reproducibility and high compliance. Cronbach’s alpha showed a high level of consistency (average 0.86). Factor analysis demonstrated the choice of questions correlated highly to the measured lifestyle. Conclusions: This study showed that the self-administered Falun health questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument, useful for detecting individuals at risk of developing diseases that are related to individual choice of lifestyle. The aims of multisite qualitative research, originally developed within the case study tradition, are to produce findings that are reflective of context, while also holding broader applicability across settings. Such knowledge is ideal for informing health and social interventions by overcoming the limitations of research developed through methodological approaches that either “strip” context, or that hold relevance for a site-specific group or population. Yet, despite the potential benefits of multisite qualitative research, there is a paucity of analytical guidance to support researchers in achieving these yields. In this article, we present an analytical approach for conducting multisite qualitative analysis (MSQA) across various methodologies to maximize the potential of qualitative research, enhance rigor, and support the development of interventions that are tailored to the populations that they are intended to serve. Countless messages and campaigns have been designed to convince individuals to engage in healthy behaviors in their daily lives. Because the vast majority of these messages are typically generated by others, the current study explores the effects of self-generated messages in the context of mobile media. A 3 · 2 (persuasion: self- vs. othergenerated narrative vs. other-generated non-narrative · topic: regular exercise vs. healthy diet) field experiment (n = 133) was conducted during a 10-day timeframe. Results indicate that self-generated messages were more successful than other-generated messages at increasing vegetable consumption and fruit intake by way of boosting pro-attitudinal arguments and health self-efficacy. However, both self- and other-generated messages failed to increase regular exercise during the study period. We discuss theoretical and practical implications for health interventions. mHealth is seen as the next stage of developing applications for information and communication technologies in the area of health care. This paper presents the evolution of mHealth systems and the results of the latest analyses of the effectiveness of mHealth interventions. Intensive mHealth development results from the near universal access to mobile devices, primarily smartphones, and devices that use sensory technologies. The great interest in mobile applications is reflected in the offer of online stores, which already provide many thousands of programs that can be installed on a mobile phone. Of the many possible mHealth applications, those supporting chronic diseases care and health promotion activities are regarded as the most promising. The growing interest in the area of mHealth is proven by the large number of publications that present syntheses of the available evidence. Although studies aimed at assessing the usefulness and effectiveness of health applications quite often raise doubts about the methodological quality, the significance of the analyses is positive. In recent years, health behaviour interventions have received a great deal of attention in both research and policy as a means of encouraging people to lead healthier lives. The emphasis of such interventions has varied over time, in terms of level of intervention (e.g. individual vs community) and drawing on different disciplinary perspectives. Recently, a number of critiques have focused on how health behaviour interventions sometimes sideline issues of social context, framing health as a matter of individual choice and, by implication, a personal responsibility. Part of this criticism is that health behaviour interventions often do not draw on alternative social science understandings of the structured and contextual aspects of behaviour and health. Yet to our knowledge, no study has attempted to empirically assess the extent to which, and in what ways, the health behaviour intervention field has paid attention to social context. In this article, we undertake this task using bibliometric techniques in order to map out the health behaviour intervention field. We find that the number of health behaviour interventions has grown rapidly in recent years, especially since around 2006, and that references to social science disciplines and concepts that foreground issues of social context are rare and, relatively speaking, constitute less of the field post 2006. More quantifiable concepts are used most, and those more close to the complexities of social context are mentioned least. The document co-citation analysis suggests that pre 2006, documents referring to social context were relatively diffuse in the network of key citations, but post 2006 this influence had largely diminished. The journal co-citation analysis shows less disciplinary overlap post 2006. At present, health behaviour interventions are continuing to focus on individualised approaches drawn from behavioural psychology and behavioural economics. Background: Reducing child mortality remains a key objective in the Sustainable Development Goals. Although remarkable progress has been made with respect to under-5 mortality over the last 25 years, little is known regarding the relative contributions of public health interventions and general improvements in socioeconomic status during this time period.Methods: We combined all available data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) to construct a longitudinal, multi-level dataset with information on subnational-level key intervention coverage, household socioeconomic status and child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. The dataset covers 562 896 child records and 769 region-year observations across 24 countries. We used multi-level multivariable logistics regression models to assess the associations between child mortality and changes in the coverage of 17 key reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health interventions such as bednets, water and sanitation infrastructure, vaccination and breastfeeding practices, as well as concurrent improvements in social and economic development.Results: Full vaccination coverage was associated with a 30% decrease in the odds of child mortality [odds ratio (OR) 0.698, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.564, 0.864], and continued breastfeeding was associated with a 24% decrease in the odds of child mortality (OR 0.759, 95% CI 0.642, 0.898). Our results suggest that changes in vaccination coverage, as well as increases in female education and economic development, made the largest contributions to the positive mortality trends observed. Breastfeeding was associated with child survival but accounts for little of the observed declines in mortality due to declining coverage levels during our study period.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a large amount of progress has been made with respect to coverage levels of key health interventions. Reducing injury and death in house fires is an important public health intervention activity with the presence of an operating smoke alarm widely considered an important way of reducing harm from fire. Yet despite a number of initiatives and fire-safety campaigns, a number of households at greater risk of domestic fire fail to have a functioning alarm. This paper provides empirical insight into everyday experiences of owning, maintaining and testing smoke alarms among a purposive sample of individuals identified as being less likely to own a functioning smoke alarm. Analysis from focus group data identifies a number of reasons why individuals may not own or test an alarm, and provides new insight into how fire risk is understood in the context of a range of competing, and potentially more prominent, individual and household risks. We suggest that while initiatives that aim to reduce fire injury and death should be continued, their success, and indeed future research on fire risk, should pay attention to the mundane and everyday contexts within which individuals currently rarely reflect on their risk of experiencing a domestic fire. The International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI) is a member of the WHO Family of International Classifications, being developed to provide a common tool for reporting and analysing health interventions for statistical purposes. A web-based platform for classification development and update has been specifically developed to support the initial development step and then, after final approval, the continuous revision and update of the classification. The platform provides features for classification editing, versioning, comment management and URI identifiers. During the last 12 months it has been used for developing the ICHI Beta version, replacing the previous process based on the exchange of Excel files. At November 2017, 90 users have provided input to the development of the classification, which has resulted in 2913 comments and 2971 changes in the classification, since June 2017. The Flexible Lifestyle Empowering Change (FLEX) Intervention Study is a multi-site randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of an adaptive behavioral intervention to promote self-management for youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). This paper details FLEX design, demographic characteristics of the sample, and outcome variables at baseline. Participants were randomized to either an intervention or control arm after their baseline standardized measurement visit. Baseline data for the primary (glycemic levels) and secondary outcome variables (e.g., motivation and problem-solving, health-related quality of life, risk factors associated with T1D complications) as well as the potential mediator variables (e.g., self-management behavior, family conflict and responsibility) suggest that the study sample was representative of the general population of adolescents with T1D and their parents. The FLEX adaptive intervention is an innovative application of a tailored treatment intervention designed to be readily adopted in real-world practice to meet each adolescent's individualized T1D self-management goals. The evolving field of persuasive and behavior change technology is increasingly targeted at influencing behavior in the area of health and wellness. This paper provides an empirical review of 16 years (85 papers) of literature on persuasive technology for health and wellness to: (1.) answer important questions regarding the effectiveness of persuasive technology for health and wellness, (2.) summarize and highlight trends in the technology design, research methods, motivational strategies, theories, and health behaviors targeted by research to date, (3.) uncover pitfalls of existing persuasive technological interventions for health and wellness, and (4.) suggest directions for future research.
