• The NCl-CDs can be used as a productive temperature indicator between 20 and 80 ℃. • Fluorescence detection of hematin was proposed based on the inner filter effect (IFE) of NCl-CDs. • The method was successfully applied to detect hematin in human serum samples. In this work, we made use of a one-step hydrothermal method for the purpose of synthesizing the multifunctional N, Cl co-doped carbon dots (NCl-CDs) from hexadecylpyridinium chloride as raw materials. The as-prepared NCl-CDs as a fluorescent probe have been put to use to develop a label free fluorescence sensing platform to detect hematin and temperature. The NCl-CDs displays temperature-dependent fluorescence that has a sensational linear feedback between 20 and 80 ℃. Moreover, hematin makes the effective quenching of the fluorescence intensity of NCl-CDs possible on the basis of inner filter effect (IFE). This sensing platform possessed elevated selectivity towards hematin with the detection limit amounting to 0.16 μM, which was further applicable in detecting hematin in human serum samples.
