102. A black swan in a sea of white noise: using technology-enhanced learning to afford educational inclusivity for learners with Asperger's Syndrome

- Abstract
Against a backdrop of increasingly vocation-focussed course provision within higher education, of widening participation initiatives intended to promote greater inclusion for learners affected by learning difficulties, and of moves towards greater use of social and collaborative forms of learning, this paper discusses the case of an undergraduate Computing student affected by Asperger's Syndrome (AS).While there is recognition in the literature of problems associated with face-to-face dialogue for persons affected by AS, there is a paucity of research both into the experience of students in higher education, and around the issue of participation in group-work activities increasingly found in creative aspects of computing. This paper highlights a tension between moves towards collaborative learning and UK disabilities legislation in relation to learners with AS. Employing a qualitative case-study methodology, the investigation revealed how a technology-enhanced learning intervention afforded an AS-diagnosed learner greater opportunities to participate in group-work in a higher education context. The findings suggest that not only can computer-mediated communications afford AS-diagnosed learners opportunities to participate meaningfully in group-work, but also that the learner demonstrated higher levels of collective-inclusive versus individual-exclusive phraseology than neurotypical peers, thereby challenging assumptions around participation in collaborative learning activities and assimilation of peer-feedback.

103. Forgetting history: mediated reflections on occupy Wall Street

- Abstract
This study examines how Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protestors' practices and stated understanding of media act on social perceptions of networked media. It stems from a discursive content analysis of online commentary from OWS protestors and supporters, using different sources from the first Adbusters blog in July 2011 until May 2012. We demonstrate how the belief in the myth of an egalitarian Internet was incorporated into the offline structure of OWS and led OWS participants to adopt rhetoric that distances the movement from past protest actions by stating the movement was "like the Internet".

- Abstract
Similar to a digitized photograph the resolution of the image will be changed by zooming in or out, and new perspectives on the situation or the other actors may be generated. The basic idea of zooming in and out in intercultural interactions is applied to the various phases of group development, following the classical model of Tuckman (1965). Ways to counterbalance non-productive zooming are pointed out as means to facilitate constructive understanding and productive collaboration across cultural differences, and potentials for mutual second-order learning are discussed.

The study reveals the pedagogical conditions of training future managers of foreign economic activity for cross-cultural communication. The analysis of the scientific research in this field has shown that the essence of the pedagogical conditions has not been generalized or systemized yet. On the base of the invariable vectors of the pedagogical process, the pedagogical conditions of training future managers of foreign economic activity for cross-cultural communication are outlined. They are: creating multicultural surrounding in the process of training managers for gaining experience in cross-cultural communication (organization); adaptive gradual management of the educational activity with due regards for personal, professional, communicative qualities of future managers of foreign economic activity (management); subject and subject interaction, directed at the optimal management of cross-cultural conflicts (communication).

In his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination to be President of the United States, Donald J. Trump presented the audience with a stark world of good vs. evil, chaos vs. stability. We use Burke's concept good terms and evil terms to rhetorically analyze the acceptance speech. While Trump used specific references to real events in his use of good and evil terms, his promises for stability over chaos are indefinite terms, which allowed a divided Republican Party to unite behind his candidacy. However, governance has required concrete concepts to solve real world issues.

While fathers seldom say "I love you" to their son(s), there is also acknowledgment that sons rarely say it to their father. Confessions of love are like notes in a melody of previous affirmations, so what is it like for a son to say it, especially if large parts of his life are spent in "connective avoidance" with his dad? Writing on the (im)possibility of eventually saying "I love you," just before he died, I offer a "blissfully poetic" account of the experience of saying it. I also reflect on the lingering significance it has had for my experience of loss and bereavement. Although this text offers no easy formula, it ends by showing what a text of bliss might eventually look like for a son in recovery. Addressing the questions, so what? And, now what, then? implications beyond the self are also considered., Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol 19, No 2 (2018)

Online communication platforms have enabled millions of users to easily communicate with one another. WhatsApp is one of the most popular communication platforms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), especially among university students. To better understand the effectiveness of WhatsApp, this research examines the trends and impact of WhatsApp usage among undergraduate university students in Abu Dhabi. The study also investigates the use of emoji and text messages as a replacement to the interpersonal communication that conventionally occurs in the process of face-to-face interaction. By means of a survey, this study found that Abu Dhabi University students consider WhatsApp to be an effective interpersonal communication medium. Although miscommunications often occur while using WhatsApp, the perceptions of the respondents varied greatly due to their own experiences and feelings regarding its use.

Ethical case deliberation (ECD) is a central element of ethical consultation in health care and welfare services. The quality of ECD depends, among others, on the ability of the actors to self-reflect and to engage in discourse. To promote these competencies, the instrument of the inner ECD is developed in this paper. The inner ECD combines the concept of inner council (Schulz von Thun) with the processing logic of an ECD oriented to the four principles of biomedical ethics (Marckmann and Mayer). The inner ECD encloses four steps: 1) perception of internal plurality; 2) structuring according to the four principles approach; 3) brainstorming and critical reflection; 4) integrated response.

This study seeks to investigate the ways in which the speech act of disagreement is expressed by young male and female Persian speakers. To collect the data 100 participants (50 males, 50 females) were selected randomly from among undergraduate and graduate students of University of Isfahan and Islamic Azad University (Najafabad branch). The focus of this study was on the role that gender and power might play in the employment of strategies to mitigate the threat of disagreement. Students were asked to complete a discourse completion test (DCT) designed by the researcher. They were supposed to read nine suggestions situations, and react to them via making disagreements. Respondents were expected to disagree with three interlocutors with higher status, three peers and three with lower status. In order to analyze the utterances of disagreement, Muntigl and Turnbull’s taxonomy (1998) was employed. The results revealed that although both males and females were concerned about the power status of interlocutors and try to apply the appropriate strategies while expressing their disagreements, females were more cautious and used different strategies from those of males.

Most of the research on the implications of mobile communication for social networks has focused on its uses and consequences in the intimate realm of close friends, family, and loved ones. A number of scholars have also become interested in ways that mobile communication helps and hinders the broader realm of network connectivity, including diverse, weak, and new ties. A collection of theoretical perspectives on mobile communication and diverse, weak, and new ties proposes that heightened connectivity in the intimate realm can come at the expense of being engaged more broadly – a scenario I characterize as network privatism. At the same time, the available empirical research in the literature tends to tell a different story, or rather stories. This analysis brings theory and empirical findings into closer conversation with one another by reviewing and synthesizing the literature in this area. Observed patterns in the literature offer new insight into questions of mobile communication and network privatism, while also pointing to opportunities for refinement of theory, analysis, and measurement as this line of inquiry further develops.

120. Macro-reasoning and cognitive gaps: understanding post-Soviet Russians' communication styles
- Author
-
Fell, Elena and Fell, Elena
- Abstract
Russians and Westerners access, process and communicate information in different ways. Whilst Westerners favour detailed analysis of subject matter, Russians tend to focus on certain components that are, in their view, significant. This disparity makes it difficult to achieve constructive dialogues between Western and Russian stakeholders contributing to cross-cultural communication problems. The author claims that the difference in the ways Russians and Westerners negotiate information is a significant cultural difference between Russia and West rather than an irritating (and in principle amenable) lack of analytical skills on the Russian partners’ part. Understanding the reasons behind the Russian-specific approaches to dealing with information would be a positive step towards a more effective cross-cultural communication, important in business situations and essential in diplomacy.

ABSTRACTWith the purpose to identify the perception of farmers Tupa/SP on legislation that established and governs the reverse logistics of empty pesticide containers, as well as the information they have on their obligation. It sought to bring elements contained in the legislation and considerations of various authors, through literature, as well as a form with 19 questions about the behavior of 20 farmers in the face of information on the release of empty containers of pesticides were applied. The discussions show that about 60% of respondents are indifferent, know little or unaware of their responsibility as first link in the chain of reverse logistics of empty pesticide containers, perhaps because of flaws in the communication process and inspection. It is suggested that there should be greater commitment from the Government in order to step up surveillance and make more understandable the responsibilities of farmers.KEYWORDS: Reverse logistics, communications and agribusiness, empty pesticide containers environmental legislation. Portanto, ser cidadão pressupõe poder relacionar-se, pressupõe ter voz, poder manifestar opiniões, dialogar, poder comunicar-se., The theoretical cohesion between citizenship and belonging is crafted on the premise that for an individual to be considered and feel in fact citizen he must first feel socially belonging to their environment and it establish relationships. Palavras-chave: Educação inclusiva, história oral, narrativa, deficiência, identidade AbstractThis paper will present a discussion on inclusive education and disability. The text's objectives are therefore present a theoretical repertoire that gives basis for the readings of the interviews; reflect on how to produce the records through oral history; and point out initial reflections on what appears in common in these narratives of parents and teachers. The initial analysis presented here was guide by the theoretical line contributions call by disability studies and by the narratives reading. Such dialogue allows us to understand how is the construction of senses and meanings related to the child with disabilities for these subjects. The study is concerned with such concepts, as it believes that they can influence the formation of contexts in its human development and identity processes. We consider the characteristics of one form of digital narrative—the blog—and what they may offer to personal narratives about mothering, families, and food and other resources. We draw on narrative analysis of six months of posts from two blogs about feeding families, written by mothers in the context of constrained economic, time, socioemotional, and environmental resources, to make a second-order analysis of the features of blogs that operate to support or transgress normative narratives. We focus on how, on the "About Me" pages of these blogs, the relations between the written and visual narratives, and the semantic multiplicities and contradictions, the styles and the cross-platform genres of the written stories, generate both normative and transgressive narratives around mothering and family, the bloggers' own involvements with the blog, and resource issues. In conclusion, we discuss the limitations of our analysis, and how and to what extent the features of blogs on which we have focused may work to generate narratives of political positioning and action. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs170178, Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol 18, No 1 (2017)

This study examines how Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protestors’ practices and stated understanding of media act on social perceptions of networked media. It stems from a discursive content analysis of online commentary from OWS protestors and supporters, using different sources from the first Adbusters blog in July 2011 until May 2012. We demonstrate how the belief in the myth of an egalitarian Internet was incorporated into the offline structure of OWS and led OWS participants to adopt rhetoric that distances the movement from past protest actions by stating the movement was “like the Internet”.

“Next Flood Level of Communication: Social Networks” (2013) published by Shaker Verlag, by Professor Ştefan Vlăduţescu from University of Craiova and Professor Ella Magdalena Ciuperca from National Academy of Intelligence “Mihai Viteazul” Bucuresti, is a book of intellectual elevation and high expression of ideas. The authors’ hypothesis and the nuclear idea of their book is that by their amplitude, by their performance, and by their self-generating, self-organization and self-improvement capabilities, social networks are the next flood level of communication. “The observational-wave of hypothesis is reinforced by an interrogative wave: what is next after next? If "End of Metaphysics" in Martin Heidegger is perfection of metaphysics, if the "End of History" in Francis Fukuyama is perfection of history, we believe that "next flood level" is neither the last level, nor the perfect level of communication” asserts the authors. Social network is not quite the perfection it is only the configured direction to untouchable perfection. Social network is the path to perfection in constant concern itself, in self-knowledge, and in self-superior capitalization of humanity as a whole, of humanity as a global, integrated and homogeneous and with obvious nuclei of heterogeneity macro-social network. However, next of the next is something, at the same time apparent and hidden, from the actual potential of the current concrete. The future always has its seeds in the past and the present.

This study examines the ways in which social media is used to promote intergroup dialogue and reconciliation in the context of the protracted, ethnopolitical conflict between Israeli-Jews and Palestinians. We focus on content analysis of posts and comments on a Facebook page named "Tweeting Arabs" which was established and is administered by Palestinian citizens of Israel. This page states that its’ main goal is to publicize opinions, thoughts and beliefs of Palestinians, enabling the moderate voice to be heard and encouraging dialogue between Israeli-Jews and Palestinians. The analysis is based on a data set containing posts and comments collected from “Tweeting Arabs” since the page was founded in November 8th 2014 and until December 4th 2014. This data set contains 85 posts which gained a total of 9657 "likes", and 461 "shares", as well as 3565 comments and replies to these posts. Our findings reveal that while posts that presented the narrative of Palestinian suffering were mostly followed by negative comments from Israeli-Jews, posts that brought up the Palestinian moderate and peace seeking voice elicited higher Jewish–Israeli acceptance and sympathy. The research adds to our understanding of Facebook as a dialogue provoking platform that enables users from different ethnopolitical groups in divided and conflicted societies to perform peacebuilding actions. This article is devoted to analyze verbal interactions in Oleanna [1993] within Grice's Cooperative Principles [1975] in order to illustrate how the shift of power gradually takes place in the academic discourse of the play. Maxims of this principle are applied on John's utterances in the first act on which the foundation of asymmetric relationship is laid. As expected within Grice's framework, the breaching of maxims, besides their observation, is performed by John through four ways of violating, opting out, clashing and flouting. The conversational implicaturs consequently generating from the flouting of some maxims, most frequently of quality, and quantity, conflict with Carol's assumptions about the state of professorship in academic context which motivate her for gaining power. The study, thereby, aims to demonstrate how clashing and flouting of maxims by John make him weak to Carol's new voice and culminate in reversal in teacher-student relationship in the play.

The conceptual model of cross-cultural communication experience formation of university students as the invariant model for training specialists of all types has been developed. The research is realized both at the theoretical and practical levels and is stipulated by the determined contradictions that confirm its urgency. The research of cross-cultural communication formation is based on the studied approaches as well as the leading pedagogic paradigms. Their application is proved by the theoretical theses. They serve as grounds for projecting the conceptual model of cross-cultural communication formation of university students, which is characterized by structural and functional components. The model proposed by the author is invariable for specialists’ preparation in any sphere and essential for the pedagogic process organization on the scientific grounds.

(Autorenreferat) The collection "Telecommunication Against Isolation" brings together eight contributions based on a pivotal project carried out at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany (campus and clinical center) using ethnographic and empirical communications data. This volume documents the results of the first study, focusing on the development and evaluation of a model for videoconferencing between isolated children suffering from cancer and their families and friends, as well as the results of the following interactional analysis exploring this technically mediated multimodal form of communication. Although an appropriate embedding of the results in the current epistemological and methodological discussion is missing to an extent, especially with regard to ethnographical concerns, the collection represents an outstanding contribution to a research area that has received little consideration as yet. This contribution is therefore a pioneering work in the field of videoconferencing as a distinct form of communication. (author's abstract)

Effective interpersonal communication between patients and the medical practitioners has always been the medium for information exchange between both parties. This qualitative research is conducted to determine how the medical practitioners react to the patients’ complaints in any given medical interaction settings. The data for the entire research were obtained through in-depth interviews, conducted with six informants. The purposive sampling method was utilized to determine the appropriate informants to be chosen with the traits of a psychiatric patient diagnosed with any psychiatric complication. The data were analysed by deriving themes from the in-depth interviews using thematic analysis method. The data acquired from the informants have contributed to a few themes which have indicated the medical practitioners’ reaction to the patients’ complaints. Based on the findings, the researcher has concluded that the medical practitioners involved in treating the informants were not responsive enough to the patients’ complaint.

Cultural differences may be observed and described in varying degrees of abstraction, depending upon the intended insight or understanding.

- Abstract
- Abstract

- Abstract
The prevention and management of environmentally damaging accidents has become an important responsibility of industry and government. One of the ways to help prevent and cope with industrial accidents is to encourage risk communication. Risk communication should take place not only between the firm and the public with which it deals, but also among the firm's employees. This discussion examines the technical and subjective aspects of various risk analysis and communication approaches, emphasizing the need to pay much greater attention to the sociopsychological dimension of risk behavior in industrial workplaces. It offers a number of practical guidelines for successful accident prevention and risk management. (author's abstract)

Hoorn, Alexandra and Hoorn, Alexandra
- Abstract
(Autorenreferat), The article takes the example of the divided border city of Guben-Gubin to analyse the patterns of perception and action - in short the "border life (border life perception)"– as experienced by young Germans and Poles. Drawing on a basis of perception and action theories of social and border region research and the actual circumst ances of life along the German-Polish border and Guben-Gubin itself, it becomes clear that there is a large number of relevant factors, whereby when considering young people, perspectives for the future are of particularly substantial significance. Therefore, when dealing with the method of an empirical study, this results in the necessity of an integrated approach, which on the one hand considers the individual as well as the group, and which also links various methods of qualitative research. The results of the study make it clear that the "border life (border life perception)" consists in the complex intermeshing of the various aspects (physical, material, socioeconomic, symbolic, linguistic, psychological and mental) and that the border itself as barrier to interaction and communication can only be defined adequately in the mutual dependence of these aspects. In a comparison of the two groups, it becomes apparent that in almost all areas that were studied, there are marked differences with regard to the specific nationality. If one therefore considers the divided border city of Guben-Gubin, it appears inappropriate to place simple trust in the belief that the fall of the EU outer borders and the overcoming of historical burdens by the younger generation would effectively lead automatically to everyday integration and understanding in the border region between Germany and Poland. - Abstract
(Autorenreferat), In this article, we suggest considering the method of interviewing couples as a form of participant observation. To assume that interviewees are mere "informants" who provide "information" neglects the fact that an interview is a specific social situation that needs to be understood through the eyes of its participants. We highlight five aspects of interviews with couples: 1. Monologues about relationships are "polyphonous" because they are infused with utterances of absent third parties implicitly or explicitly being recited during the interview. 2. When interviewing couples, dialogic co-productions of utterances occur whereby the interviewees do not only talk to each other but perform speech acts together. 3. The interviewees talk but are equally -and maybe for the first time- listeners and observers of their partners' presentation of their relationship 4. In instances of indirect interaction the presence of the interviewer is used, e.g. to make the partner hear something that appears to be addressed to the interviewer. 5. Direct interactions such as the re-enactment of conflicts or competition over the "adequate" telling of a story let private matters, in fact the couples' very relationship, appear directly in the interview. In sum, we reveal a variation of usages of the interview by those participants for whom it is not a method of data collection. (author's abstract)

- Abstract
Portanto, ser cidadão pressupõe poder relacionar-se, pressupõe ter voz, poder manifestar opiniões, dialogar, poder comunicar-se., The theoretical cohesion between citizenship and belonging is crafted on the premise that for an individual to be considered and feel in fact citizen he must first feel socially belonging to their environment and it establish relationships. The expression of ideas is a factor that legitimizes citizenship.

This research examines a non-formal ritual practice – the coffee break – inside organizations. Based on a survey conducted on 12 marketing and commercial teams in France, we analyse if the coffee break has an objective of social efficiency or of performance. While solving this question, our results also reveal the importance of seniority in the observed behaviors, suggesting that it symbolizes an informal level of authority in front of the formal authority symbolized by the status.

Under the premise that many distance education initiatives, when effectuated, maintain practices associated with traditional education and instructionism, with little participation and engagement on behalf of learners towards the realization of the progressive pedagogical models on which these same projects are based, we inquire upon the engaged learning concept, from its theoretical conceptions, as well as the strategies for its implementation. Besides promoting learners' autonomy, these principles are justified by the reduction of the high levels of dropout and lack of motivation that characterize this modality.
