Introduction In recent years, prescription drug misuse has become a common issue among adolescents and young adults in many countries, with, for example, a lifetime prevalence of 12% among individuals aged 12-17 in 2017 in United States. Purpose of review To summarize recently published studies about prescription drug misuse among adolescent and young adults. Recent findings Prescription drug misuse has many definitions, one being any medication taken in a way other than prescribed, whether related to dosage or manner of usage. Among adolescents, it has a relationship with illicit drug use, decline in academic performance, future delinquency, and mental problems. Individual predisposing factors include identity crisis and role confusion, and there are also environmental influences. Preventive approaches include the use of monitoring systems. Management involves initial assessment and treatment, which largely focuses on behavioural interventions. Summary Further understanding of risk and protective factors, co-occurring issues, and treatment can help prevent and reduce the prevalence of prescription drug misuse. Collaboration among government, clinicians, and patients is urged to combat this growing issue.

Intimate partner violence continues to be a widespread and serious problem. African American women experience a high lifetime prevalence of physical intimate partner violence, but resources for them are often scarce. This mixed-methods analysis of telephone survey responses found that women who were African American, had less education, and were dissatisfied with criminal justice responses to an abusive incident were less likely to seek personal protection orders (PPOs). The qualitative analysis showed that many women did not seek POs because their assessment of their partners indicated it was not needed or increased risk. Practical obstacles in obtaining orders were noteworthy.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric disorder which is associated with significant disability and psychosocial factors. There are only few epidemiological studies of MDD in economically underdeveloped regions of China. This study examined the 1-month and lifetime prevalence of MDD and their sociodemographic correlates in Hebei province, China.Using multistage, stratified and random sampling, the study was conducted between April and August 2016. The diagnosis of MDD was established using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders-Patient Edition.The weighted 1-month and lifetime prevalence of MDD were 0.9% (95%CI: 0.8-1.1%) and 1.6% (95%CI: 1.4-1.8%), respectively in the sample of 14,654 adult participants. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the age group of 45-59 years (P 0.001, OR=3.206, 95%CI:1.693-6.072), female gender (P 0.001, OR=2.171, 95%CI: 1.522-3.097), married marital status (P 0.001, OR=0.328, 95%CI: 0.198-0.545), college educational level or higher (P = 0.006, OR=0.145, 95%CI: 0.037-0.573), employment (P = 0.010, OR=2.305, 95%CI: 1.220-4.353), major medical conditions (P 0.001, OR=3.758, 95%CI: 2.607-5.418) and family history of psychiatric disorders (P 0.001, OR=3.947, 95%CI: 2.203-7.071) were significantly associated with MDD.The prevalence of MDD in Hebei province was found to be lower than in most areas of China and other countries. Further studies are warranted to confirm the low prevalence of MDD in other economically underdeveloped regions of China.

Homelessness poses serious health risks, and those risks may be exacerbated among slum-dwelling youth in the developing world. We administered a cross-sectional survey to youth receiving services from a community organization in Kampala, Uganda. This secondary analysis explores the relationships between homelessness and various health outcomes. We also explored possible moderating relationships between neighborhood support, homelessness, and health. Logistic regression and t-tests were used to model these relationships. Homelessness was associated with all outcomes analyzed, with youth who reported having been homeless having higher odds of reporting poor health (odds ratio [OR] = 12.4; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 6.43, 23.92), higher odds of HIV infection (OR = 1.941; 95% CI = 1.274, 2.958), and higher odds of experiencing rape (OR = 3.459; 95% CI = 2.4, 4.987). No moderation by neighborhood support was observed, though this may be due to low variability. Homelessness warrants specific investigative attention due to its strong association with a broad range of negative health outcomes among slum-dwelling youth. Interventions targeting the specific health risks faced by homeless youth in the developing world may improve social welfare service delivery.

Scarce data exist on the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by asylum seekers in Switzerland and their perception of discrimination. A cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence and type of CAM used by asylum seekers in one region of Switzerland and evaluated their self-perceived discrimination. Among the 61 asylum seekers who participated, lifetime prevalence of CAM use was 46%, with 28% reporting its use during the last year. Herbal medicine was the most frequently used CAM. Self-perceived discrimination was reported by 36% of asylum seekers, mainly related to their national origins. CAM users had a tendency to report more discrimination than non-users (44% vs. 30%). CAM use is prevalent among asylum seekers. Considering the importance of herbal medicine use and that only half of the respondents disclosed CAM use to their physician, clinicians should ask about it, notably because of potential risks of herb-drug interaction.

BackgroundRetrospective reports of lifetime experience with mental disorders greatly underestimate the actual experiences of disorder because recall error biases reporting of earlier life symptoms downward. This fundamental obstacle to accurate reporting has many adverse consequences for the study and treatment of mental disorders. Better tools for accurate retrospective reporting of mental disorder symptoms have the potential for broad scientific benefits.MethodsWe designed a life history calendar (LHC) to support this task, and randomized more than 1000 individuals to each arm of a retrospective diagnostic interview with and without the LHC. We also conducted a careful validation with the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition.ResultsResults demonstrate that—just as with frequent measurement longitudinal studies—use of an LHC in retrospective measurement can more than double reports of lifetime experience of some mental disorders.ConclusionsThe LHC significantly improves retrospective reporting of mental disorders. This tool is practical for application in both large cross-sectional surveys of the general population and clinical intake of new patients.

Background: Low Back Pain (LBP) is the commonest form of musculoskeletal disorder among physical therapists. Repetitive tasks, high force manual techniques bending/twisting postures, patient transfer assisting with mat activities, lifting heavy equipment, prolonged constrained posture and foot abnormalties identified as risk factors of low back pain which is common in the field of physical therapy.Aim of the Study: The purpose of this study was to identify prevalence of work related LBP among physical therapists with different foot postures working in governmental hospitals in fayoum-Egypt.Subjects and Methods: 147 physical therapists who are working in the governmental hospitals in Fayoum-Egypt, the LBP will be measured by Nordic Questionnaires (NQ) and foot postures measured by Foot Posture Index (FPI).Results: 112 of the 147P. Ts (76.19%) have completed the questionnaire. WRLBP (n=68), non WRLBP (n=25), no LBP (n=19). The lifetime prevalence of WRLBP was 60.71%, the twelve-month prevalence of WRLBP was 52.67%, the point prevalence of WRLBP was 47.32%, concerning BMI and WRLBP 74.28% of subjects with BMI of 20-24.9kg/m2 and 54.54% of subjects with BMI of 25-29.9kg/m2, the WRLBP was present in 54.83% of female subjects and in 68% of male subjects, the WRLBP was present in 56% of subjects with normal foot posture, 55% of subjects with pronated foot posture, 91% of subjects with highly pronated foot posture, 100% of subjects with supinated foot posture and 67% of subjects with highly supinated foot posture.Conclusion: There was no statistically significant associ-ation between LBP and foot postures, however there was a statistically significant association between WRLBP and BMI. There was a high prevalence of WRLBP among physical therapists who working in governmental hospitals in Fayoum-Egypt.

IMPORTANCE Individuals with mental disorders often develop comorbidityover time. Past studies of comorbidity have often restricted analyses to a subset of disorders and few studies have provided absolute risks of later comorbidity.OBJECTIVES To undertake a comprehensive study of comorbidity within mental disorders, by providing temporally ordered age-and sex-specific pairwise estimates between the major groups of mental disorders, and to develop an interactive website to visualize all results and guide future research and clinical practice.DESIGN, SETTING. AND PARTICIPANTS This population-based cohort study included all individuals born in Denmark between January 1, 190 0, and December 31, 2015, and living in the country between January 1, 20 0 0, and December 31, 2016. The analyses were conducted between June 2017 and May 2018.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Danish health registers were used to identify mental disorders, which were examined within the broad 10-level International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, lOth Revision, subchapter groups (eg, codes F00-F09 and F10-F19). For each temporally ordered pair of disorders, overall and lagged hazard ratios and 95% Cls were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regress on models. Absolute risks were estimated using competing risks survival analyses. Estimates for each sex were generated.RESULTS A total of 5 940 778 persons were Included in this study (2 958 293 men and 2 982 485 women; mean [SD] age at beginning of follow-up, 32.1[25.4] years). They were followed up for 83.9 million person-years. All mental disorders were associated with an increased risk of all other mental disorders when adjusting for sex, age, and calendar time (hazard ratios ranging from 2.0 [95% CI, 1.7-2.4] for prior intellectual disabilities and later eating disorders to 48.6 [95% Cl, 46.6-50.7] for prior developmental disorders and later intellectual disabilities). The hazard ratios were temporally patterned, with higher estimates during the first year after the onset of the first disorder, but with persistently elevated rates during the entire observation period. Some disorders were associated with substantial absolute risks of developing specific later disorders (eg, 30.6% [95% CI, 29.3%-32.0%] of men and 38.4% [95% CI, 37.5%-39.4%] of women with a diagnosis of mood disorders before age 20 years developed neurotic disorders within the following 5 years).CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Comorbidity within mental disorders is pervasive, and the risk persists over time. This study provides disorder-, sex-, and age-specific relative and absolute risks of the comorbidity of mental disorders. Web-based interactive data visualization tools are provided for clinical utility.

The effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on asthma have been reported in various in vitro, animal, and human epidemiologic studies. However, epidemiological studies on the effects of bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF), which are substitutes of BPA, on asthma are lacking. The purpose of this study was to identify the association between BPA, BPS, and BPF and asthma. An asthma-related questionnaire; urinary BPA, BPS, BPF; and the possible confounders were analyzed among 922 adolescents aged 12–17 years who participated in the Korean National Environmental Health Survey 2016. In males, urinary BPA, BPS, and BPF did not show a significant relationship with the lifetime prevalence of asthma. In females, urinary BPS was higher in the asthma group (p < 0.01). High urinary BPS showed a significant relationship with a high odds ratio (OR) of lifetime asthma prevalence in the model adjusted for possible confounders (p < 0.05). High urinary BPS was particularly associated with an increase in the OR of asthma diagnosed after the age of 60 months (p < 0.01). Urinary BPS was significantly associated with asthma diagnosis, especially after the age of 60 months, among Korean adolescent females.

Major depression is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by affective, cognitive, and physiological impairments that lead to maladaptive behavior. The high lifetime prevalence of this disabling condition, coupled with limitations of existing medications, make necessary the development of improved therapeutics. This requires animal models that allow investigation of key biological correlates of the disorder. Described in this article is the unpredictable chronic mild stress mouse model that can be used to screen for antidepressant drug candidates. Originally designed for rats, this model has been adapted for mice to capitalize on the advantages of this species as an experimental model, including inter-strain variability, which permits an exploration of the contribution of genetic background; the ability to create transgenic animals; and lower cost. Thus, because it combines genetic features and socio-environmental chronic stressful events, the unpredictable chronic mild stress model in mice is a relevant and valuable paradigm to gain insight into the etiological and developmental components of major depression, as well as to identify novel treatments for this condition. © 2021 The Authors. Background Hand eczema is a common inflammatory skin disorder in both adolescence and adulthood. Objectives We sought to assess the lifetime prevalence of hand eczema and associated exogenous and endogenous risk factors among adolescents in Germany. Methods This was a cross-sectional study embedded into a prospective population-based birth cohort in four regions of Germany, which recruited healthy neonates born between November 1997 and January 1999. We included 1,736 participants who had completed the 15-year follow-up from birth cohort and 84.6% (1,468/1,736) had clearly reported whether they have ever had hand eczema. All the data was based on questionnaires and blood tests (immunoglobulin E). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine endogenous and exogenous factors in relation to the lifetime prevalence of hand eczema among adolescents. Results 1,468 adolescents (715 girls, 48.7%) were included in the final analysis. The lifetime prevalence of hand eczema among adolescents at the age of 15 was 10.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.9%-12.1%), with a significantly higher lifetime prevalence among girls than boys (12.7% vs. 8.2%, P = 0.005). Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated statistically significant associations between the lifetime prevalence of hand eczema and having ever been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis (aOR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.1-2.8) or having ever had dry skin (aOR=1.9, 95% CI: 1.1-3.1), respectively. No statistically significant independent associations were found between asthma, hay fever, allergy-related clinical symptoms, immunoglobulin E positivity and other exogenous factors in relation to hand eczema. Conclusion Our study fills a research gap on the epidemiological burden of hand eczema among adolescents. One out of ten ever suffered from hand eczema until age 15 years indicating that hand eczema constitutes a significant burden in pediatric populations. The role of atopic dermatitis in hand eczema reinforces previous findings. Exogenous risk factors warrant further investigation.

Background Digital interventions offer new avenues for low-threshold prevention and treatment in young people. Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) represent a powerful approach that allows for adaptive, real-time, and real-world delivery of intervention components in daily life by real-time processing of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data. Compassion-focused interventions (CFIs) may be particularly amenable to translation into an EMI to strengthen emotional resilience and modify putative risk mechanisms, such as stress sensitivity, in the daily lives of young help-seeking individuals. Objective This study aims to investigate the feasibility, safety, and initial therapeutic effects of a novel, accessible, transdiagnostic, ecological momentary CFI for improving emotional resilience to stress (EMIcompass). Methods In this uncontrolled pilot study, help-seeking youth with psychotic, depressive, or anxiety symptoms were offered the EMIcompass intervention in addition to treatment as usual. The EMIcompass intervention consisted of a 3-week EMI (including enhancing, consolidating, and EMA-informed interactive tasks) administered through a mobile health app and three face-to-face sessions with a trained psychologist intended to provide guidance and training on the CFI exercises presented in the app (ie, training session, follow-up booster session, and review session). Results In total, 10 individuals (mean age 20.3 years, SD 3.8; range 14-25) were included in the study. Most (8/10, 80%) participants were satisfied and reported a low burden of app usage. No adverse events were observed. In approximately one-third of all EMAs, individuals scored high on stress, negative affect, or threat anticipation during the intervention period, resulting in real-time, interactive delivery of the CFI intervention components in addition to weekly enhancing and daily consolidating tasks. Although the findings should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size, reduced stress sensitivity, momentary negative affect, and psychotic experiences, along with increased positive affect, were found at postintervention and the 4-week follow-up. Furthermore, reductions in psychotic, anxiety, and depressive symptoms were found (r=0.30-0.65). Conclusions Our findings provide evidence on the feasibility and safety of the EMIcompass intervention for help-seeking youth and lend initial support to beneficial effects on stress sensitivity and mental health outcomes. An exploratory randomized controlled trial is warranted to establish the feasibility and preliminary evidence of its efficacy.

Body dissatisfaction is a substantial problem. Body dissatisfaction's development into several clinical physical and psychological health disorders are well-recognized. A further well-documented consequence of body dissatisfaction is the non-medical use of anabolic-androgenic steroids by men. Steroids can cause muscular growth and loss of body fat. A large meta-analysis of studies found that the lifetime prevalence of steroid use among men and boys was 7% a prevalence rate that appears to be increasing. Researchers should not however limit their analyses of the impact of body dissatisfaction to clinical eating disorders or steroid usage. Researchers tend to identify the driver of male body dissatisfaction as other people, especially women and mothers, or individuals themselves. Protein shakes, muscle supplements, cosmetic surgery procedures, hair loss ‘solutions' and male make up represent just some of this landscape. Unregistered cosmetic surgeons have a significant social media presence; with most promoting their own surgeries rather than posting any medically educational content.

The present study aimed to examine the lifetime exposure to serious life events in people with visual impairment compared with the general population. Data were derived from a telephone survey including a probability sample of 736 adults with visual impairment (response rate: 61%). The lifetime prevalence of direct experiences with seventeen different categories of serious life events (Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5)) were compared to that obtained from the general Norwegian population (N = 1792, 36% response rate). Altogether, 68% of people with visual impairment had been directly exposed to at least one serious life event, with equal rates among males and females (p = 0.59). The prevalence of serious life events was higher than for the general population (60%, p &lt, 0.001), especially for fire or explosions, serious accidents, sexual assaults, life-threatening illness or injury, and severe human suffering. In conclusion, our results indicate that people with visual impairment are more prone to experiencing serious life events. This highlights the need for preventive strategies that reduce the risk of serious life events in this population.

Anxiety and depression are common in youth and are frequently accompanied by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it is unclear how common ADHD, ASD, and other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs, i.e., ADHD, ASD, developmental coordination disorder, learning disorder, and tic disorders) are in children versus adolescents with anxiety and depression. We aimed to delineate whether different anxiety/depression age-of-onset groups show distinguishable NDD patterns. The study was based on 4492 twins born in Sweden between 1998 and 2003 from the nation-wide population-based Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden. Prevalence and odds ratios were calculated using screening measures of anxiety and depression at ages 9 and 15, and NDDs at age 9. Individuals with childhood-onset anxiety/depression had a substantially higher NDD prevalence compared to individuals with adolescent-onset anxiety/depression. Highest prevalence was found for individuals with anxiety/depression both in childhood and adolescence. In this group, individuals also had substantially higher odds of having at least one NDD (14.7, 95% CI 6.3 - 34.0) compared to individuals without anxiety/depression. This emphasizes the need to further investigate the etiology of childhood and adolescent anxiety/depression, as they most likely represent different constructs depending on age-of-onset, lending support for possibly different treatment approaches.

Technology-mediated sexual interaction (TMSI) refers to any partnered interaction that involves sending or receiving self-created, sexually explicit content using communication technology (e. g., sexting, cybersex). Most research on TMSI assumes that experiences are desired and consensual. However, it is likely that some people do not desire all their TMSI experiences but consent to them anyways (compliance), or experience non-consensual TMSIs. People also engage in TMSIs with different types of partners. According to the traditional sexual script (TSS), other-gender attracted women and men's non-consensual TMSI experiences should differ overall and depending on the relationship context of the experience. The goal of this study was to examine the role of sexual scripts in other-gender attracted women and men's non-consensual and compliant TMSI experiences with committed romantic partners (CRPs), known non-partners (KNPs), and strangers (Ss). Women (n = 331) and men (n = 120) completed an online survey with questions about lifetime prevalence of experiencing seven types of compliant and non-consensual TMSIs in each relationship context. Results of mixed ANOVAs revealed significant interactions: overall, more participants reported compliant TMSI with CRPs. More women than men had received a non-consensual TMSI from someone they were not in a committed relationship with, and more men than women reported sending non-consensual TMSIs to a stranger. Tests of unpaired proportions suggested that the prevalence of sending and receiving non-consensual TMSIs was discordant in the KNP and S contexts: both women and men received more non-consensual TMSIs from KNPs and Ss than the other-gender reported sending. Our findings suggest that gendered sexual scripts are evident in some, but not all, aspect of other-gender attracted women and men's compliant and non-consensual TMSI experiences.

Background Injury prevention strategies should be built upon data about the more frequent injuries in each specific sport. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the lifetime prevalence and characteristics of severe knee injuries among world-class karatekas. Methods A retrospective study based on a face-to-face survey was conducted. Participants were athletes who competed in World Karate Senior Championships in Madrid 2018, which was a tournament with the highest value to rank athletes to the Tokyo Olympic Games. A questionnaire was used to collect retrospective information on the prevalence and characteristics of severe knee injuries that occurred along elite karatekas sport careers. Odds Ratio (OR) were calculated to identify the association of sex and karate modality (kata / kumite) with severe knee injury risk. Results Out of the 293 athletes surveyed (23.4±4.0 years; 137 female), 71 (24.2%) had suffered a serious knee injury at some point of their careers, without a statistically significant difference between male and female athletes. There was no difference between the percentage of injuries that took place during training (54.9%) or during competition (45.1%) both in male and female athletes. Kumite athletes suffered more knee injuries during competition than training. The most common injury mechanism for both genders was a pivoting or dodging movement (36.4% in males and 39.5% in females). Conclusions The information presented in this study about the prevalence and characteristics (mechanism, anatomical location, moment, time off) of the severe knee injuries in elite karatekas could be useful to design prevention programs to be implemented among karate athletes.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a major public health concern with a lifetime prevalence rate of 6.1-9.2% in North America. PTSD is known to alter the autonomic nervous system leading to chronic sympathetic arousal including heightened anxiety and hypervigilance. Pupillometry offers a quick and accessible measure of autonomic nervous system imbalances characteristic of PTSD. This study investigates the utility of pupillometry as a biomarker to detect PTSD in a sample of 39 adults with (n = 22) and without (n = 17) PTSD. Participants viewed a 25-minute computer protocol consisting of 5-minute rest phase, 10-minute negative emotionally valent images, and 10-minute guided meditation. We relied on a time-frequency analysis to represent the pupillary responses of two different groups (PTSD-affected individuals and healthy-control subjects). These data were then employed with a CNN network to learn a prediction model. Individuals with PTSD demonstrated increased pupil dilation across the entire protocol. The final outcome revealed an accuracy of 81.09% which indicates the feasibility of using this approach to detecting participants with PTSD in an automated way. Findings from this research have important implications for clinical mental health assessment, diagnostics and treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex, multifactorial disorder with onset in either childhood or early adulthood. Lifetime prevalence has been estimated to be around 2%−3%. DSM-5 groups OCD together with closely related disorders—body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), hoarding disorder, and excoriation disorder (skin-picking disorder)—as obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). In addition, DSM-5 includes a “tic-related” specifier, recognizing that OCD and Tourette syndrome/chronic tics are frequently comorbid. In recent years, the first large-scale genome-wide studies of OCRDs have emerged. These studies confirmed results from earlier twin and family studies that have demonstrated a strong genetic component to OCRDs. Furthermore, from analyses of common genetic variation, these studies offered a first insight into how the genetic risk of developing an OCRD might be connected to the genetic risk of developing another OCRD. This article is an update of the authors’ previous report; it summarizes recent findings on the genetics of OCRDs and highlights some of the recent directions in OCRD genetics that will pave the way for new insights into OCRD pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of playing-related musculoskeletal problems (PRMPs) in professional musicians is well documented in the literature, but few studies have been done on South African professional musicians. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of PRMPs, pain intensity, and pain interference among full-time and part-time orchestral musicians, using a validated self-report instrument specifically designed for musicians. METHODS: Seventy-nine full-time and part-time professional orchestral musicians took part in the study and completed the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM). RESULTS: A lifetime prevalence of PRMPs was 76% and point prevalence 30%. Of the PRMP group, 30% experienced current pain that interfered with their ability to play. Upper strings players reported the most PRMPs. The most commonly reported pain locations were right and left upper limb, neck, forearm, and elbow. The mean pain intensity score for the PRMP group was 16.3 (SD 6.62) (out of 40) and the mean pain interference score was 21.2 (9.98) (out of 50). Female musicians reported experiencing pain more frequently and intensely and also reported more pain sites than males. CONCLUSIONS: This study, the first to make use of a validated self-report instrument, shows that musculoskeletal problems are common among full-time and part-time professional orchestral musicians in South Africa.

Objective. To compare the occurrence of suicide attempts across nationally representative samples of the Mexican adolescent population over the past 12 years, and to analyze its association with sociodemographic, lifestyle and mental-health indicators. Methodology. Data were drawn from the 2006, 2012 and 2018 National Health and Nutrition Surveys (n = 25,056, 21,509, and 17,925 adolescents, respectively). Estimates were based on standardized measurements. Results. The estimated lifetime prevalence rates of suicide attempts were 1.1% in 2006, 2.7% in 2012, and 3.9% in 2018, indicating a 3.4-fold increase. Across the three survey periods, women yielded rates nearly three times higher than men. Lifetime prevalence grew the most among adolescents aged 13–15 years. Compared to the other respondents, the odds of lifetime suicide attempts proved seven times as high for those who had been sexually abused during their childhood, five times as high for those who had been diagnosed with a depressive disorder, three times as high for those who had suffered physical aggression and twice as high for those who had smoked 100+ cigarettes in their lifetimes and those who consumed alcohol. Conclusion: The sharp increase in suicide attempts in Mexico calls for an urgent public-health response via universal and targeted interventions supported by national policy and sustained federal funding.

Objectives Epileptic seizures and epilepsy in urban settings of low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) are largely under-researched, but their prevalence is necessary for good healthcare planning. This study aimed to determine the lifetime prevalence of epileptic seizures and epilepsy in urban Dar es Salaam. Methods Nearly 50,000 people in former Kinondoni district, Dar es Salaam, were screened for epileptic seizures using a set of nine questions. Answers to these nine questions were categorized into generalized, focal, and unspecified seizures. Screening positivity rates were adjusted for questionnaire inaccuracy using two scenarios to analyse true epilepsy prevalences. Results Overall, 1085 (2.23%) people fulfilled the criteria for ever having had at least one type of epileptic seizure. Two-hundred-ninety-six (0.60%) people screened positive for generalized seizures, 986 (2.02%) for focal seizures, and 32 (0.07%) for unspecified seizures. Introduction Little is known about the patterns of adolescent and young adult digital dating abuse (DDA) nationwide. This study characterizes (1) the lifetime prevalence, (2) the age of initiation, and (3) the patterns of co-occurrence of both using and experiencing DDA behaviors in dating relationships. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among a sample of 696 U.S. young adults recruited from Prolific, an online research platform. The sample was 50.7% female, 43.7% male, and 5.6% gender non-binary or transgender. The average age was 18.7 years (SD = 0.63, range: 16–22). Results & Conclusions Among those with dating experience, 76.1% (n = 530) reported either using or experiencing at least one DDA behavior in their lifetime. Overall, 42.9% of respondents reported using and 58.3% experiencing digital monitoring and control behaviors, 25.0% reported using and 49.2% experiencing digital direct aggression, and 12.4% reported using and 36.4% experiencing digital sexual coercion. The average age of initiation for most DDA behaviors was 16 years with respondents reporting experiencing these behaviors at 11 years of age at the earliest. Of those with any involvement with DDA, 59.2% report both using at least one DDA behavior and experiencing at least one DDA behavior (n = 314), 32.5% report experiencing at least one DDA behavior but not using any (n = 172), and 8.3% report using at least one DDA behavior but not experiencing any (n = 44). DDA behaviors are common, can occur at young ages. Our findings highlight crossover between those who use and those who experience DDA behaviors and suggest prevention should focus on underlying issues that drive both the use and experience of these behaviors.

This study describes the prevalence of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) injection, their main correlates, and the prevalence of specific AAS injection risk behaviours among men who have sex with men (MSM), an area insufficiently addressed in scientific research. Participants were HIV-negative MSM attending four HIV/STI diagnosis services: two clinics and two community programmes in Madrid and Barcelona. Participants answered an online self-administered questionnaire. Crude and adjusted lifetime prevalence and prevalence ratios (PRs) were calculated by different factors and using Poisson regression models with robust variance. Of the 3510 participants, 6.1% (95% CI: 5.3–6.9) had injected AAS before and 3.5% (95% CI: 2.9–4.2) had done so in the last 12 months. In the multivariate analysis, AAS injection was independently associated with being over 40 years old (aPR = 3.6, 95% CI: 2.0–6.5) and being born in Latin America (aPR = 2.5, 95% CI:1.9–3.4), and was less strongly associated (aPRs of around two) with having been recruited into STI clinics, having ever been paid for sex before, injected drugs, used drugs for sex, having been diagnosed with an STI before, and having been diagnosed with HIV at the recruitment consultation. Only three participants, 1.4%, of those who had injected AAS before had shared AAS or equipment for preparation or injecting before. Conclusions: In contrast to drugs, AAS injecting behaviours do not play a relevant, direct role in the transmission of blood-borne infections among MSM. However, AAS injectors have a higher prevalence of sexual risk behaviours. These findings should be confirmed using new studies that employ other sampling procedures.

To examine prevalence of verbal, physical, and sexual abuses in young elite athletes, a cross sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted during the World Athletics under 20 World Championships. This questionnaire aimed at distinguishing between abuses perpetrated in the context of Athletics from those which were unrelated to Athletics. Four hundred and eighty athletes (52.3%, male) from North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania took part in the electronic anonymous survey. Outside Athletics setting, no gender difference was found for the prevalence of verbal, physical, and sexual abuses. However, 45 males (18% of the male population) and 34 females (15% of the female population) athletes reported sexual abuse. Asian athletes reported a slightly higher rate of sexual abuse; three quarters of them being non-touching abuses. Inside Athletics setting, no gender difference was found for the prevalence of verbal, physical, and non-touching sexual abuses. However, 58 males (23%) and 47 females (21%) reported verbal abuses. Thirty-one males (12%) and 20 females (9%) reported physical abuses, whereas 30 males (12%) and 17 females (7%) reported sexual abuses. Physical abuses were slightly more frequent in Asia and in Africa and less frequent in South America. Sexual abuses inside Athletics also differed over regions, and were unexpectedly twice more frequent than expected in Asia and slightly less frequent than expected in Europe. Friends and partners were identified as the more frequent (> 50%) abusers outside or inside the Athletics settings, whereas outside Athletics and inside Athletics, coaches were identified as sexual abuse perpetrators in 8 and 25% of cases, respectively. The prevalence of verbal, physical, or sexual abuses is high but consistent with what has been reported in United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, and Sweden at national level in recreational or elite athletes. Sexual abuse, including touching or penetrative abuses, occurred significantly more often in male athletes when compared to female athletes. This finding invites healthcare and social workers, and policymakers to also consider the risk of sexual abuse of young male athletes in Athletics. Background Sexual assault (SA) is highly prevalent in Belgium. In order to mitigate the negative consequences for victims of acute SA, Sexual Assault Care Centres (SACCs) were piloted from October 2017 to October 2018 in three Belgian hospitals. SACCs offer medical and psychological care, forensic examination and the possibility to report to the police at the SACC. Objective Aiming to improve SACC services, we quantitatively assessed the number and characteristics of victims attending the SACC, the SA they experienced, and the care they received over 12 months upon admission. Method Data on victims presenting at the SACC were routinely collected in electronic patient files by the SACC personnel between 25 October 2017 and 31 October 2019. These data were analysed in IBM SPSS Statistics 25. Results Within the first year 931 victims attended the SACCs. Mean age was 24.5 years (SD = 12.8), and one-third were under 18. The majority were female (90.5%) and 63.1% presented for rape. About one-third of the victims were considered vulnerable due to previous SA (35.6%), prior psychiatric consultation (38.7%) or disability (8.5%). The assailant was known to the victim in 59.2% of the cases. Of all SACC presentations, 35.2% self-referred to the SACC while 40.9% were referred by the police. Two out of three victims attended the SACC within 72 h post-assault. Respectively 74.7% of victims received medical care, 60.6% a forensic examination, 50.2% psychological care, and 68.7% reported to the police. Conclusion Despite the absence of promotion campaigns, the SACCs received a high number of victims during the pilot year. Use of acute and follow-up services was high, although new approaches to offer more accessible psychological support should be explored. The big proportion of vulnerable victims warrants careful monitoring and adaptation of care pathways., HIGHLIGHTS Belgian Sexual Assault Centres received 931 victims in the 1st year, mostly being young women raped by a known assailant. Uptake of medical care, forensic examination and police reporting was high. Easier accessible psychological follow-up support is needed.

There is a lack of large and high-quality studies investigating the prevalence of LBP in Brazil. Objective: To estimate the point, one-year, and lifetime prevalence of non-specific LBP in adults from the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: This community-based, cross-sectional study recruited 3000 participants in flow point locations randomly selected from census sectors of São Paulo. Interviews and self-administered questionnaires were used to estimate point prevalence, one-year prevalence, and lifetime prevalence of LBP. Results: The estimate of point prevalence was 9.8% (95% CI: 8.8, 11.0), one-year prevalence was 48.1% (95% CI: 46.3, 49.9), and lifetime prevalence was 62.6% (95% CI: 60.8, 64.3). One-year and lifetime prevalence were higher in females, obese people, people insufficiently active and sedentary, current smokers, people who are exposed to repetitive movements, crouched or kneeling position, people dissatisfied with their job, people a little bit or very stressed, a little bit or very anxious, and a little bit depressed, and people with good and fair or poor general health. Lifetime prevalence was also higher in people exposed to standing positions and exposure to carrying weight. Conclusions: The high point, one-year, and lifetime prevalence of LBP in Brazil indicates that there is a need for coordinated efforts from government, the private sector, universities, health workers, and civil society to deliver appropriate management of LBP in middle-income countries. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common dermatological disorder in children, which is chronic and of a relapsing nature. It is very common in children, with a fair chance of lifetime prevalence of the disease. The following case is of a child 5 months of age who was suffering from AD since 2 months of age. After the first prescription, complaints were much improved. Following that, the child was treated with complex homoeopathic medicines by another physician, which aggravated the condition. Following stoppage of medicines due to an aggravation, a second remedy was thereafter prescribed that provided long-term relief to the patient.

BackgroundMajor depression is a treatable disease, and untreated depression can lead to serious health complications. Therefore, prevention, early identification, and treatment efforts are essential. Natural history models can be utilized to make informed decisions about interventions and treatments of major depression.MethodsWe propose a natural history model of major depression. We use steady-state analysis to study the discrete-time Markov chain model. For this purpose, we solved differential equations and tested the parameter and transition probabilities empirically.ResultsWe showed that bias in parameters might collectively cause a significant mismatch in a model. If incidence is correct, then lifetime prevalence is 33.2% for females and 20.5% for males, which is higher than reported values. If prevalence is correct, then incidence is .0008 for females and .00065 for males, which is lower than reported values. The model can achieve feasibility if incidence is at low levels and recall bias of the lifetime prevalence is quantified to be 31.9% for females and 16.3% for males.LimitationsModel is limited to major depression, and patients who have other types of depression are assumed healthy. We assume that transition probabilities (except incidence rates) are correct.ConclusionWe constructed a preliminary model for the natural history of major depression. We determine the lifetime prevalence are underestimated. We conclude that the average incidence rates may be underestimated for males. Our findings mathematically prove the arguments around the potential discordance between reported incidence and lifetime prevalence rates.

Drug use has become widespread with very high prevalence recorded globally and studies on psychoactive substance use have become more prevalent throughout the world. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics and prevalence of cigarette, alcohol and other psychoactive drug use among adults in North Cyprus (NC). A random multi-staged, stratified sampling quota was used for sampling in May-June 2015. Household survey interviews were conducted with 994 people within the 18–65 age group. A survey questionnaire was used, namely the Model European Questionnaire of Council of Europe which had been adapted to the Turkish language. The prevalence data are given in comparison with surveys conducted using the same questionnaire in 2003 (825 people), 2008 (804 people) and 2013 (1040 people). The survey shows that the lifetime prevalence of smoking is 62.7%, alcohol use is 72.1% and illicit drug use is 8%. Lifetime cannabis use is 4.5%, synthetic cannabinoid is 3.5%, ecstasy is 1.5%, sedatives/hypnotic drugs is 5.7% and volatiles was found to be 1.4%. The prevalence of cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, LSD and codeine syrups use were between 0.6 and 1.3%. Compared to previous studies, it has been observed that the lifetime cigarette/alcohol use is decreasing among adults in NC; however, the lifetime use of other psychoactive drugs is increasing. NC has a higher prevalence of cigarette use than Asian, European and African countries. The prevalence of alcohol and substance use is similar to the high prevalence in the United States. NC needs efficient prevention programs in order to combat drug use.

Background This study aimed to describe the prevalence and lifetime criteria profiles of DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the transitions from alcohol use to disorder in Chifeng, China. Methods Face-to-face interviews were conducted using Composite International Diagnostic Interview-3.0 (CIDI-3.0) among 4528 respondents in Chifeng. Results The weighted lifetime and 12-month prevalence of DSM-5 AUD were 3.03 and 1.05%, respectively. Mild lifetime AUD was the most prevalent severity level (69.53%). The two most common criteria were “failure to quit/cutdown” and “drinking more or for longer than intended.” Lifetime prevalence was 65.59% for alcohol use, and 22.97% for regular drinking. Male and domestic violence were risk factors for the transition from alcohol use to regular drinking or AUD and from regular drinking to AUD. Younger age was risk factor for the transition to AUD from alcohol use or regular drinking. Poverty (OR = 2.49) was risk factor for the transition from alcohol use to regular drinking. The earlier drinkers were more likely to develop to regular drinking (OR = 2.11). Conclusion AUD prevalence in Chifeng was not as high as that in Western countries. The study revealed that multiple risk factors might contribute to the transition across different stages of alcohol use. Further research should explore the underlying mechanisms.

The development of "omic" technologies and deep phenotyping may facilitate a systems biology approach to understanding anxiety disorders. Systems biology approaches incorporate data from multiple modalities (e.g., genomic, neuroimaging) with functional analyses (e.g., animal and tissue culture models) and mathematical modeling (e.g., machine learning) to investigate pathological biophysical networks at various scales. Here we review: i) the neurobiology of anxiety disorders; ii) how systems biology approaches have advanced this work; and iii) the clinical implications and future directions of this research. Systems biology approaches have provided an improved functional understanding of candidate biomarkers and have suggested future potential for refining the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders. The systems biology approach for anxiety disorders is, however, in its infancy and in some instances is characterized by insufficient power and replication. The studies reviewed here represent important steps to further untangling the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders.

Introduction Saudi Arabia has a high prevalence of sickle cell disease (SCD). Leg ulceration is one of the complications associated with SCD. There is a gap in the literature in regard to the prevalence of leg ulcers among SCD patients in Saudi Arabia. Objectives The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the lifetime prevalence of leg ulcers in SCD patients in our population and to study the predictive factors of leg ulcers by using sociodemographic factors, clinical manifestations of SCD, and other relevant factors like hydroxyurea. Methods A cross-sectional study design was utilized. Data collection was done using an electronic survey to collect self-reported information for the prevalence of leg ulcers and possible associated factors. The survey was distributed using social media platforms. Chi-square test was used to test for the presence of an association between having leg ulcers and sociodemographic variables as well as SCD related history. Furthermore, binary logistic regression was utilized to determine factors predicting the incidence of leg ulcers among SCD. Results A total of 790 valid responses were included in the study. Among these, 646 were included in the analysis of leg ulcers prevalence. From them, 52 (8%) SCD patients reported a history of leg ulcers. The male to female ratio was (9.7% vs 7.2%). The age group most affected by leg ulcers was those older than 50 (16.7%). There was no significant association between a history of leg ulcers and sociodemographic variables. The only predictive factors for leg ulcers were having six to eight vaso-occlusive crises per month and having more than eight vaso-occlusive crises per month. Conclusion Leg ulcers among SCD patients in Saudi Arabia were considerably prevalent (8%). There was no statistically significant correlation between leg ulceration and sociodemographic variables. Leg ulcers were more likely in patients with a history of highly frequent vaso-occlusive crises. No association was found between the incidence of leg ulcers and other complications of sickle cell disease or hydroxyurea.

BACKGROUND The large and growing number of individuals with severe mental illnesses who are on probation presents challenges to both mental health and criminal justice authorities. The clinical and mental health service needs of probationers with severe mental illnesses have however, been insufficiently researched, particularly with respect to trauma and the need for trauma-informed services. AIMS To explore the lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among people on probation who also have other serious mental illnesses and their demographic characteristics. METHODS Individuals on probation in six counties in one southeastern state who had been diagnosed with severe mental illnesses were assessed for PTSD; they were also asked whether they had experienced any of 14 traumatic events of interest over their lifetimes. RESULTS Of 207 participants, about half had clinically diagnosable PTSD. Nearly two-thirds had experienced more than five traumatic events during their lifetimes: 86% experienced at least one non-interpersonal traumatic event, such as a car accident, and 90% experienced at least one interpersonal traumatic event, such as a physical assault. The latter was the single most frequently reported traumatic event (80%, n = 160). PTSD was, on average, associated with a higher number of prior traumatic experiences overall. CONCLUSIONS In one state in the USA, rates of trauma experiences and PTSD among probationers with other mental illnesses are high. Relative to prisoners, little is known about the mental health needs among probationers, so replication in a larger sample across jurisdictions would be useful. Findings are likely to have implications for form of service delivery as well as treatment needs.

Objective: Exposure to traumatic events has been associated with psychiatric symptoms and prevalence of psychiatric disorders in adolescents. This study was conducted to examine, in a U.S. probability sample of adolescents, the association between lifetime exposure to traumatic events and current (i.e., 30-day) severity of serious emotional disturbance (SED) using a brief screening measure commonly adopted for monitoring psychopathology in epidemiological surveys and community, educational, and clinical settings. Method: Data on lifetime prevalence of 17 traumatic events and a measure of SED (i.e., the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale) was examined in the National Comorbidity Survey Adolescent Supplement, a probability sample of 13-18-year-old adolescents (N = 10,106). Results: Sixty percent of adolescents reported experiencing at least one traumatic event, and the mean number of events reported was 1.3. Adjusting for demographics, 16 of 17 traumatic events were significantly and positively associated with SED, with traumas involving interpersonal violence having especially large effect sizes. The largest effect sizes were obtained for having been (a) badly beaten by date or romantic partner, (b) raped, and (c) badly beaten by parents or guardians. Fourteen of the traumatic events were significantly associated with SED when all 17 events were examined simultaneously, thereby providing evidence for the specificity of these associations. Conclusions: Results suggest that a broad range of traumatic events are uniquely associated with current severity of psychopathology in adolescents, using a measure commonly used in epidemiological surveys and community, educational, and clinical settings. Introduction Headache is an extremely prevalent disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 90–99%. However, a small fraction of people never experiences a headache. Research on people without headache could uncover protective factors in headache, but to our knowledge no study on headache-free individuals has been published. We aim to estimate the prevalence of headache-free individuals among Danish blood donors, and to describe the socio-demographics and health factors of headache-free participants. Materials and methods In all, 38,557 healthy volunteers were recruited as part of the Danish Blood Donor Study. Headache-free participants were identified based on the question “Have you ever experienced a headache of any kind?”. Utilising the Danish registries and self-reported questionnaires, we analysed socio-demographic and lifestyle factors using logistic regression adjusted for age and sex. Results The prevalence of headache-free individuals was 4.1% (n = 1362) with a female-male ratio of 1:2.2. To be headache free was significantly associated with an employment status as a student, a low level of income and a regular alcohol consumption. Discussion The prevalence of headache-free individuals was comparable to population-wide studies of headache. To be headache free was not associated with a high socio-economic status. Further studies on people without headache will hopefully reveal protective factors in headache, and this novel approach might be useful in other very prevalent disorders.
