β-Ga 2 O 3 is an ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor with excellent ensemble of attributes. To optimize the machining technologies and improve the mechanical performances, the plastic deformation mechanism of β-Ga 2 O 3 is necessary to thoroughly understand. In this work, nanoindentation experiments were conducted on (100) and (010) oriented β-Ga 2 O 3 to study the incipient plasticity with small indentation depths. It is indicated that the yield strength, elastic modulus and hardness for the (100) plane are higher than those of the (010) plane. Observations in the deformation morphology confirms that the deformed zone of the (100) plane is constrained in a hemispherical volume below the indentation with a radius about ten times larger than the indentation depth. However, for the (010) plane, a "one dimensional" plastic zone is formed in front of the tip with near one hundred times deeper than the penetration depth of the indenter. The deformation behavior is dominated by stacking faults, twins and dislocations for the (100) plane, while only dislocations are responsible for the plastic deformation of the (010) plane. ● The yield strength, elastic modulus and hardness for (100) plane of β-Ga 2 O 3 single crystals are higher than that of (010) plane. ● The deformed zone of the (100) plane was constrained in a hemispherical volume below the indentation, however, a "one dimensional" plastic zone was created for the (010) plane. ● The (100) plane is more brittle than (010) plane under the indentation test. Developing alloys with excellent strength-ductility combination is urged desirable for advanced structural application. However, it still remains challenging in spite of years' efforts. Face centered cubic (FCC) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) commonly exhibit superb ductility. However, the low strength and hardness would limit the development of the FCC-structured materials. Here, the FCC + L12 + BCC structured CoFeMnNiMo 0.2 Alx were designed and prepared. The CoFeMnNiMo 0.2 Al 0.5 HEA displays outstanding compressive properties, whose ultra-high compressive strength is 1900 MPa and the fracture strain is 39.6%. The nano-hardness of the CoFeMnNiMo 0.2 Al 0.5 HEA is nearly 8 GPa. Moreover, the relationship between phase evolution, mechanical property, strengthening mechanism, and Mo, Al concentration are systematically discussed. In this study, leveraging on the machine learning, a novel high-strength Ni 100-x-y Cr 25 Fe 25 Al x Ti y (x = 5, y = 5; x = 8, y = 7; x = 10, y = 10) high-entropy alloy (HEA) system was rationally designed, whose phase transformed from FCC + BCC to single BCC. The structural features, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanism were systematically investigated. It has been discovered that the addition of Al and Ti can accelerate the formation of L21 phase. The Ni 35 Cr 25 Fe 25 Al 8 Ti 7 HEA shows outstanding comprehensive mechanical behavior, whose yield strength, compressive strength, fracture strain, and nano-hardness is 1913.69 MPa, 3896.62 MPa, 39.94%, and 11.07 GPa, respectively. These findings will give new insights into the controllable design of novel high-performance HEAs, enabling the achievement of target microstructures and superior combinations of properties. The plastic deformability of brittle ceramics, e.g. , Al 2 O 3 , at a small scale can expand their potential structural applications. In this work, we propose to investigate the nanomechanics and plasticity of α -Al 2 O 3 using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at room temperature. First, nanoindentation MD simulations are performed with single crystalline α -Al 2 O 3. Four crystallographic orientations are investigated, m 1 1 ̄ 00 , a 2 1 ̄ 1 ̄ 0 , R 1 ̄ 012 and c 0001 , including a detailed analysis of Al 2 O 3 dislocation-based mechanisms. The results show that the O atoms undergo a phase transformation, changing from the hexagonal close-packed structure to face-centered cubic and body-centered cubic structures. Second, during nanoindentation, we focus on pop-in events and the transformation point from elastic to inelastic response during loading forces. Structural failure assessment approaches take into account local parameters, specimen geometry, loading and material. In the case of welded joints, in addition to these parameters, consideration must be given to the effect of the heterogeneity of properties due to welding. The objective of our work is to study the fatigue crack propagation of welded joint in API X70 pipeline steel. This experimental study focused on welded joints in the different parts, base metal, weld metal and heat affected zone. The concepts of fracture mechanics are used to analyze the harmfulness of defects in welded joints and the main part of fatigue life falls on the crack propagation. The results obtained show that the fatigue crack propagation rate of cracks in the heat affected zone is delayed compared to the other zones. The effect of the microstructure and the quality of submerged arc welding of the studied X70 steel are significant. Tensile tests, hardness and measurement of energetically parameters complemented this work.

Due to their excellent mechanical properties including high modulus, high strength, large ductility and low density, nanocarbon like the graphene (Gr) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become potential reinforcements in metal matrix composites (MMCs). Dislocation impediment and load transfer across nanocarbon/metal interfaces could strengthen the nanocarbon reinforced MMCs as well as micro-/nano-scale hybrid MMCs. Due to complex composite structures and interfacial microstructures, large difficulties exist in indicating the microscopic structure-property relationships by continuum mechanical simulations and experimental approaches. Considering the situations above, the atomic-scale simulations including first-principles and molecular dynamics simulation are suitable to investigate the microscopic structure-property relationships of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs, in which the physical properties, crystal orientations, interfacial structures and mechanical behaviors could be studied under a wide range of working temperatures and strain rates, etc. In recent years, the development of advanced computation techniques including material database, machine learning and parallel computing have enlarged the research works in the atomic-scale simulations of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs. Therefore, a systematical review of atomic-scale simulation and mechanical behaviors of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs is conducted in this study. Atomic-scale simulation methodologies are first introduced, while the atomic-scale structural models of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs are discussed as follows. Next, different atomic-scale mechanical deformations containing tensile, compressive, shear and bending mechanical deformations of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs are summarized. Moreover, the multi-scale simulations of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs are reviewed as well, while the perspectives of atomic-scale simulations of nanocarbon reinforced MMCs are suggested for the future research works based on advanced computation techniques.

The mechanical behaviors of soil-rock mixture (S-RM) are very complicated and significantly affected by its rock block content and gradation composition. A systematic study was performed on how the strength and failure characteristics of S-RM can be affected by the rock block content, the "oversize rock block" processing methods adopted, and the sample size in triaxial tests. Both the deviator stress ratio and friction strength of S-RM increase together with the rock block content, but the former tends to decrease as the confining pressure increases. In the case of S-RM samples with the same gradation, these two parameters tend to decrease as the sample scale becomes larger. The development of deviator stress over axial strain of samples prepared using the equal quantity substitution method is similar to that of the samples of the natural gradation. During the shearing process, some large rock blocks in S-RM will be broken. The breakage mode of the rock blocks can be primarily divided into four categories according to its mechanism, namely, disintegration, corner breakage, fracturing, and breakage along bedding faces. In this work, similar butt joints of AA6061-T6 alloy prepared by underwater friction stir welding (UWFSW) and friction stir vibration welding (FSVW) processes were examined. The characteristics of joints were compared with the joints obtained by conventional friction stir welding (CFSW). The different kinds of microstructural modifications that occurred during CFSW, FSVW, and UWFSW processes were analyzed. The results are employed to analyze the different behaviors in strength, ductility, weldability, and hardness of the joints in different processes at different traverse speeds, rotational speeds, and vibration frequency. It was found that mechanical vibration decreases the grain size in the weld zone and hinders the coalescence and regrowth of the precipitates during FSVW. On the other hand, water significantly decreased the joint temperature during UWFSW and led to a refined microstructure in the stir zone, which substantially improved the mechanical properties of the welded joint. The synergetic effect of refined grains and lower dissolution of β″ precipitates (higher evolution of β″ to β′ and β-Mg2Si) due to fast cooling rate (intensified local deformation) led to higher hardness in UWFSW (FSVW) joint compared to CFSW joint. The small size with the uniform distribution of dimples indicated the combination of strength and ductility in FSVW-ed and UWFSW-ed joints. There have been strong interests in achieving unconventional mechanical properties of materials utilized for various applications in recent years. Apart from the well known composite material approach, an innovative approach of employing cellular structure or repeated geometric pattern has been of great interest. The simple example that has been proved useful and promising is the monoholar pattern. Experimental investigations of monoholar rubber flat slab have demonstrated a number of unusual mechanical behaviors under compression loading unable to achieve before. It is thus enticing to find out if the same is possible under tension loading. This research therefore embarks on applying tension load on a thin monoholar rubber flat slab, 1/10 as thick as the flat slab tested under compression loading. Results of the experiments clearly demonstrate similar behaviors as observed in the case of compression loading. However stress plateau is not observable in the stress-strain curve obtained under tension loading. This is because the test specimen reaches rupture point after undergoing a certain level of stress. Ligament thickness has been observed to effect noticeable drop in stress level before gradually increasing towards stress level that causes full blown rupture. Full understanding of the thermomechanical behaviors of materials at high strain rates and high temperatures are of great importance from not only scientific meaning but also practical value in engineering structure design and safety assessment. Great efforts have been made for abilities of operation the split Hopkinson bars, the most popular technique for experimental determination of mechanical behaviors of materials over the strain rates from 102 to 104 s−1 over the past 70 years, at high temperatures since 1960s. A review of experiment work is presented in this paper to give an overview of the development of experimental techniques at high temperatures based on Hopkinson bar systems. The principles of the split Hopkinson bar requires the loading bars avoiding temperature gradient or keeping relatively low temperature when performing high temperature testing. Techniques such as performing temperature gradient corrections, rapid heating or using special designed automatically assembled systems were proposed by researchers to enable the operation of the split Hopkinson bars at temperature as high as possible. Moreover, to the application of high speed photographic technique for capturing the dynamic deformation process of the specimen in high temperature Hopkinson bar testing, some key issues of eliminating the strong thermal radiation induced lights oversaturation and de-blurring of images due to insufficient exposure at high temperature and high strain rate condition, as well as fabrication of high contrast speckle pattern for high temperature digital image correlation measurement were also proposed. The technique can now enable the split Hopkinson bar testing to be performed at high temperature up to 1873 K under the loading conditions of compression or tension with the in situ observation and full field measurement of deformation as well. Firstly, an X-ray diffraction test is carried out to investigate brittle rock specimens' composition, and a triaxial compression test is conducted to study the deformation behaviors and mechanical properties. Then, assuming that the rock material is able to be divided into the elastic part satisfying the Hooke's law and the damage part where rock strength follows lognormal distribution, this paper determines a damage variable and establishes a damage constitutive model which effectively reflects the residual strength in the process of rock failure. Meanwhile, testing data are used to validate the reliability of the proposed model in this paper and the dependence of statistic parameters on the confining pressure. Finally, impacts caused by statistic parameters variation on compression strength are analyzed comprehensively, and we also conduct a comparison between this proposed model and other models from other literatures, thereby showing the reliability and rationality of this proposed model. The search for new topological materials that are realistic to synthesize has attracted increasing attention. In this study, we systematically investigated the electronic, mechanical, and topological semimetallic properties, as well as the interesting surface states, of the tetragonal monoxide of platinum, which is realistic to synthesize, via a first-principles approach. Our calculated results indicate that PtO is a novel topological semimetal with double nodal lines in the kz = 0 plane and a pair of triple topological nodal points along the A'-M-A directions. Obvious surface states, including Fermi arc and drum-head-like surfaces, could be found around nodal points and nodal lines. The dynamic and mechanical stabilities of P42/mmc-type PtO were examined in detail via calculation of the phonon dispersion and determination of elastic constants, respectively. Some other mechanical properties, including the bulk modulus, Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Pugh's index, were considered in this study. P42/mmc-type PtO provides a good research platform for investigation of novel behaviors that combine mechanical properties and rich topological elements.

Very recently, topological semimetals with nontrivial band crossing and associated topological surface states have received widespread attention. Various types of topological semimetals, including nodal point semimetals, nodal line semimetals, and nodal surface semimetals, have been predicted from first principles. In absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect, we propose that cubic-type hafnium nitride (HfN) with a Pm3̄m space group is a novel topological semimetal hosting a rare 0-D triple nodal point and a 1-D topological nodal ring. More importantly, the interesting 0-D and 1-D topological states all occur near the Fermi level, and these topological states are not disturbed by other extraneous bands. When the SOC effect is taken into consideration, 0-D triple nodal point was gapped and a new 0-D topological element, namely, Dirac point appears along Γ-R path. Finally, the dynamical and mechanical stabilities of this semimetal and its associated mechanical properties are discussed in order to provide a reference for future investigations. Our work promises that HfN can serve as a superior topological semimetal with high stability, excellent mechanical properties, and rich topological states.

Phase separation phenomena in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted much attention since their discovery, but little attention has been given to the dynamics of the deformation mechanism of this kind of HEA during uniaxial tension, which limits their widespread and practical utility. In this work, molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the effect of phase separation on the mechanical properties of an HEA under uniaxial tensile loading. Moreover, the associated deformation behavior of the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA was investigated at the nanoscale. Models with Cu-rich grain boundaries or grains were constructed. The results showed that Cu-rich grain boundaries or grains lowered the strength of the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA, and Cu-rich grain boundaries significantly reduced ductility. This change of mechanical properties was closely associated with a deformation behavior. Furthermore, the deformation behavior was affected by the critical resolved shear stress of Cu-rich and Cu-depleted regions and the uneven stress distribution caused by phase separation. In addition, dislocation slipping and grain boundary sliding were the main mechanisms of plastic deformation in the Co–Cr–Cu–Fe–Ni HEA.

Advanced carbon-carbon composites (C/Cs) are tailored materials exhibiting properties designed to fit the end demands. However, as a kind of fiber reinforced materials, C/Cs have complex internal structures and various manufacturing defects which evolve with temperature. In addition, the micro-nano structures of the carbon fiber reinforcements and graphite matrix are susceptible to the thermal and graphitizing treatments. All these result in the complicated mechanical behaviors of C/Cs. Several experimental studies have been reported, but the mechanical parameters coupled together cannot be separated. Thus, the mechanical behaviors of C/Cs have yet been well understood. In the present work, theoretical models for the coefficient of thermal expansion, Young's modulus, and tensile strength of 2D C/Cs are established based on the mechanical mechanisms revealed in the ultra-high-temperature experiments. The mechanical behaviors of 2D plain-weave PAN based C/Cs at elevated temperatures are then studied. • A constitutive formulation with predictive capabilities and high efficiency to quantitatively capture the mechanical behaviors of double-network hydrogels is developed. • The evolution equations of the internal variables are determined through the analysis of mass conservation and energy dissipation. • The comparisons of the theoretical results with the experimental data of both t-DN gels and c-DN gels show sufficiently good agreements. Double-network hydrogels (DN gels), consisting of a rigid, highly cross-linked short-chain network and a flexible, loosely cross-linked long-chain network, are a kind of promising soft and tough material with superior mechanical properties. In order to capture the mechanical behaviors of DN gels more accurately and with more physical depth than some existing models, a constitutive formulation is developed in this paper. The Helmholtz free energy function is decomposed into three parts accounting for the free energies of each network and the mixing of all the components. The eight-chain worm-like chain (WLC) based model is then employed to describe the deformation of each network with two network structure parameters: the chain density and the average chain length. Based on the existing experimental investigations of the internal fracture process of DN gels, a detailed and clear physical picture is illustrated. According to this damage picture, the two network structure parameters of the short-chain network are regarded as two internal variables. Within the framework of general thermodynamics, the energy dissipation is defined through the variation of the internal variables, which allows one to obtain the evolutions of internal variables from analyzing the macroscopic dissipated behaviors of DN gels. For the cases without energy dissipation, the network structure parameters are constant and can be determined directly through the stress-strain relation at one typical point on the stress-strain curve and the stored Helmholtz free energy of each state. These determined values of the parameters are then used to validate the mass conservation. For the cases with energy dissipation, the evolution equations of the two internal variables are determined through the analysis of the energy dissipation and the mass conservation. As a result, not only the unloading stress-stain curves but also the primary loading curve can be theoretically predicted by the constitutive formulation. The mechanical behaviors of both t-DN gels and c-DN gels before necking are analyzed. The comparisons of the theoretical results with the experimental data show sufficiently good agreements, demonstrating the ability and efficiency of the formulation to capture the Mullins effect of DN gels. 3-D particle-based discrete element method (PB-DEM) was employed to numerically study the mechanical and progressive failure characteristics of pre-fissured marble specimens under conventional triaxial unloading conditions. The microscopic parameters of PB-DEM for marble materials were calibrated using comparison with the previous experimental data. To systematically investigate the mechanical properties and the progressive failure characteristics of pre-fissured marble specimens under the unloading conditions, a series of numerical specimens were simulated. The effects of fissure geometric conditions, initial confining pressures, and unloading rates on the mechanical and failure behaviors were explored via simulations. The present numerical results indicate that peak strength increased as the initial confining pressures increased or the unloading rate decreased. Crack coalescence types and the ultimate failure modes in the pre-fissured marble specimens were significantly affected by the unloading stress paths. The present numerical results provide a better understanding of unloading mechanical and failure characteristics to scientists and engineers in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The effects of doping ratio of calcium (Ca) on mechanical behaviors are investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) and the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom method (2NN-MEAM) formalism for nanocrystalline (NC) Mg-Ca alloys system. Research results indicate that mechanical behaviors of Mg-Ca alloys are independent of lower strain rate (under 1.0 × 109 s−1). In addition, we observe that Ca doping can affect the mechanical properties of the Mg-Ca alloys, and the optimal 2.0 at% of Ca atoms, which has excellent plasticity, is revealed. When the doping ratio is lower than critical atomic percent (CAT) of Mg2Ca, Young's modulus and yield stress decrease increasing at% of substitutional Ca. The pyramidal dislocations are observed frequently at more active grain boundary (GB) with higher Ca doping ratios. In contrast, with doping ratio above CAT, Mg2Ca reinforcement dominates brittleness Mg/Mg2Ca nanocomposites to obtain high strength. By calculating, a significant increase of strength is discovered when at% of Mg2Ca is above 18.85 (5.34 at% Ca). Intergranular fractures are more likely to nucleate and propagate along weaker Mg/Mg2Ca interfaces. These results are instrumental in design and improving the mechanical properties of Mg-Ca alloys. Directed energy deposition (DED) is capable of manufacturing high-density and complex metal components, whereas traditional machining methods are limited in these regards. Nevertheless, the fabrication of parts with DED that have accurate dimensions and geometries as well as acceptable surface states is a concern, as these factors are inferior to those of traditionally machined components. Therefore, the application of parts fabricated with DED is restricted. Thus, the hybrid additive/subtractive manufacturing (HASM) method has been exploited to comprehensively utilize the advantages of both. In this paper, the HASM method was used to fabricate bulk parts with four different scanning strategies (alternating the orientation of subsequent layers by 0°, 45°, and 90° and island scanning are referred to as an X-scan, a Rot-scan, an XY-scan, and an Island-scan, respectively) followed by subtractive milling to gain a smooth surface with a determined thickness for the next scanning and deposition period until the parts were completely finished. The influence of the scanning strategy on the densification level and mechanical behavior of the specimens fabricated with HASM was studied. The results show that the specimens fabricated with the 7 × 7 mm2 island scan with short scan vector lengths showed a higher densification than the specimens fabricated using long scan vector lengths (the three methods mentioned above). Finally, to obtain a fine surface finish, the influence of the feed per tooth (fz) on the surface quality of a 316L stainless steel during the milling process that occurs during the HASM process was also investigated. The result shows a fz of 0.25 mm yielding the minimum surface roughness value among the samples observed herein, which implies that the surface quality was better than that of the other studied conditions. This study presents the effect of porosity on mechanical behaviors of a power distribution functionally graded beam. The Euler-Bernoulli beam is assumed to describe the kinematic relations and constitutive equations. Because of technical problems, particle size shapes and micro-voids are created during the fabrication which should be taken into consideration. Two porosity models are proposed. The first one describes properties in the explicit form as linear functions of the porosity parameter. The second is a modified model which presents porosity and Young’s modulus in an implicit form where the density is assumed as a function of the porosity parameter and Young’s modulus as a ratio of mass with porosity to the mass without porosity. The modified proposed model is more applicable than the first model. The finite element model is developed to solve the problem by using the MATLAB software. Numerical results are presented to show the effects of porosity on mechanical behaviors of functionally graded beams.

This work was conducted to investigate biomimetic micro-textures, mechanical behaviors and intermittent turning performance of textured Al 2 O 3 /TiC micro-composite and micro-nano-composite ceramics. Chip characteristics and the geometry features of the structures on the cuticle of Procambarus clarkia were considered in the preparation of the laser-induced biomimetic micro-textures on the composite ceramic surfaces. Characteristics of the biomimetic micro-textures were revealed in terms of geometry, morphology and chemical composition. The connection between the thermal stress resulting from laser pulse and the fractal dimension of the micro-crack on the micro-textures was analyzed and identified. The correlation between the mechanical behaviors (damage and fracture toughness) of the textured composite ceramics and the fractal dimension of the micro-crack was fitted and revealed quantitatively. The performance of the textured composite ceramic tools was pre-evaluated by means of a proposed indicator. Damage, fracture toughness and tool stress were incorporated in the indicator. The indicator and the experimental tool wear were compared for validating the effectiveness of the proposed indicator. It was found that the micro-composite ceramic exhibited greater sensitivity to laser than the micro-nano-composite ceramic did. The damage of the textured micro-composite ceramic was larger than that of the textured micro-nano-composite ceramic when the same laser parameters were utilized in the micro-texture preparation. On the contrary, the fracture toughness of the textured micro-composite ceramic was found to be smaller. There was a negative correlation between the damage of the textured composite ceramic and the fractal dimension of the micro-crack. Conversely, there was a positive correlation between the fracture toughness and the fractal dimension. The performance of the textured micro-nano-composite ceramic tool was better than that of the textured micro-composite ceramic tool. The physical properties included structural, mechanical, thermal and optical features of lead-free perovskites CsCaX 3 (X = F, Cl, Br) have been investigated using ab ـinitio computations. The optimized lattice constants correspond extremely well with experimental as well as theoretical data. Structural stability of these phases is ensured from the Goldschmidt tolerance factor (t G) and formation enthalpy. Mechanical stability of CsCaX 3 (X = F, Cl, Br) is authenticated by the investigated stiffness constants. The polycrystalline parameters such as bulk modulus (B), Poisson's ratio (ν), shear modulus (G), Young's modulus (E), anisotropy factor (A), hardness and Pugh's ratio are calculated and compared with similar types of compounds. The huge Young's modulus, bulk modulus as well as hardness of CsCaF 3 assured that it has a great capacity to resists the deformation of volume as well as plastic than CsCaCl 3 and CsCaBr 3. The CsCaBr 3 material is particularly ductile which makes it excellent for usage in thin films. The density of states (DOS) and the electronic band structures have been estimated of these compounds, which demonstrate that they have direct energy band gap that reduces continually in the order of CsCaF 3 >CsCaCl 3 >CsCaBr 3. The optical features of CsCaX 3 (X = F, Cl, Br) are investigated. Among the studied materials, the optical features of CsCaBr 3 appear to be more enhanced than the other two compounds. A combined analysis of CsCaF 3 , CsCaCl 3 and CsCaBr 3 demonstrated that these types of materials have great potential for a variety of device applications in optical, ferroelectric, antiferromagnetic systems having their wide band gaps. • An analytical model of the segment longitudinal joints considering different arrangements of double sealing gaskets. • The effect of the arrangement of sealing gaskets on the mechanical behavior of segment longitudinal joints. • The arrangement of double sealing gaskets and the location of bolts in the large-diameter shield tunnel. The sealing gasket of the traditional double waterproof system of the large diameter shield tunnel consists of two sealing gaskets which are arranged on the outside of the bolt hole(SGOH) or arranged on both sides of the bolt hole(SGBH). The different arrangement of the double sealing gaskets has significant effects on the mechanical behaviors of the longitudinal joints of the segment. In this paper, based on the energy equivalence principle, the actual distribution stress of the compression zone of the segment longitudinal joints was simplified equivalently as rectangular distribution stress. Then, a progressive mechanical model was established for the longitudinal joint, taking into account the effect of double sealing gaskets arrangements. Furthermore, the proposed mechanical model was validated through former experimental results and other analytical models. Finally, the effect of different arrangements of the double sealing gaskets on the mechanical behavior of the longitudinal joints of the segment was compared and analyzed. The results showed that the difference in the arrangement of the double sealing gaskets results in varying effects of the additional bending moment on the joint bending deformation under sagging and hogging moments, leading to the unequal bending stiffness of the joint. The difference in bending stiffness caused by the double sealing gasket arrangements is approximately 100∼150 MN·m/rad. To optimize the mechanical behaviors of the joints, the double sealing gaskets should be arranged on both sides of the bolt hole(SGBH), with the bolt located at the center of both the longitudinal joints and the core compressive zone of the longitudinal joints. In this work, a constitutive model is developed to consider the effect of arbitrary fiber distribution on the swelling and tensile deformations of fiber-reinforced hydrogels. In the model, the free energy of total system is divided into two parts, i.e., the hydrogel contribution and fiber phase one. For hydrogel subsystem, we adopt the hydrogel free energy function of Flory-Rehner so that the swelling characteristic of hydrogel can be well captured; for the fiber, a statistical method is used to construct its free energy function. To effectively model the effect of fiber distribution, a principal invariant and dispersion coefficient are introduced so that the quantitative relationship between fiber distribution and anisotropy of material can be well described. Furthermore, through the analytical method or finite element implementation, both the swelling and tensile deformations of hydrogel composites with different fiber distributions are investigated. The modeling results show that the model can not only quantitatively predict the swelling and tensile deformations, but also can capture the effect of fiber distribution on the mechanical response of hydrogel composites. Battery anodes generally have a layered structure consisting of an active material layer (including binder, conductive carbon, and active material) and a foil layer of the current collector (copper foil). Such layered structures bring grand challenges to our understanding of the mechanical behaviors of the Si-based anode sheets since the large deformation of the Si particles, and solid-solid interfacial interactions (particle-particle and particle-binder) are key knowledge in high-energy, safe, and durable batteries. Herein, we characterize a typical commercialized Si-based anode with detailed microstructure morphology. Representative mechanical tests, including tensile and compression tests, are conducted to characterize the constitutive behaviors of the anode materials. Further, we propose a 3D computational model with detailed descriptions of the microstructures of the active material is established to enable a fundamental understanding of the deformation behaviors. Pristine graphene is one of the strongest materials known in the world, and may play important roles in structural and functional materials. In order to utilize the extraordinary mechanical properties in practical engineering structures, graphene should be assembled into macroscopic structures such as graphene-based papers, fibers, foams, etc. However, the mechanical properties of graphene-based materials such as Young’s modulus and strength are 1–2 orders lower than those of pristine monolayer graphene. Many efforts have been made to unveil the multi-scale structure–property relations of graphene-based materials with hierarchical structures spanning the nanoscale to macroscale, and significant achievements have been obtained to improve the mechanical performance of graphene-based materials through composition and structure optimization across multi-scale. This review aims at summarizing the currently theoretical, simulation, and experimental efforts devoted to the multi-scale structure–property relation of graphene-based layer materials including defective monolayer graphene, nacre-like and laminar nanostructures of multilayer graphene, graphene-based papers, fibers, aerogels, and graphene/polymer composites. The mechanisms of mechanical property degradation across the multi-scale are discussed, based on which some multi-scale optimization strategies are presented to further improve the mechanical properties of graphene-based layer materials. We expect that this review can provide useful insights into the continuous improvement of mechanical properties of graphene-based layer materials.

Molecular dynamics simulations using a three-body potential show that the melting and mechanical behaviors of silicon nanowires are strongly dependent on their cross-section area. For the wire with a small cross-section area, rearrangements of surface atoms greatly affect thermal stability in a relatively low temperature regime. For these wires with a relatively large area, while some surface atoms adjust their positions, most of the interior atoms hold their tetrahedra packing patterns. At a high temperature, the accumulation of structural disorder can quickly extend into the entire wire, which resembles the melting of the bulk phase. By applying the uniaxial tensile, these silicon nanowires present the typical mechanical behavior of plastic materials. The atomic local stress in the necking region is apparently larger than that outside of the necking region. As the cross-section area becomes large, both the yield strength and tensile strength increase. With the increasing temperature, the elasticity decreases significantly.

In the last two decades, the naturally occurring polysaccharides, such as chitosan and pectin, have gained great attention having potential applications in different sectors, from biomedical to new generation packaging. Currently, the chitosan and pectic have been proposed as suitable materials also for the formulation of films and coatings for cultural heritage protection, as well as packaging films. Therefore, the formulation of biopolymer films, considering only naturally occurring polymers and additives, is a current challenging trend. This work reports on the formulation of chitosan (CS), pectin (PC), and chitosan:pectin (CS:PC) films, also containing natural crosslinking and reinforcement agents, such as citric acid (CA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNT), through the solvent casting technique. The produced films are characterized through water contact angle measurements, infrared and UV–visible spectroscopy and tensile test, while the durability of the CS:PC films is evaluated subjecting the film to accelerated UVB exposure and monitoring the photo-oxidation degradation in time though infrared spectroscopy. All obtained results suggest that both crosslinking and reinforcement agents have beneficial effects on the wettability, rigidity, and photo-oxidation resistance of biopolymer films. Therefore, these biopolymer films, also containing naturally occurring additives, have good properties and performance and they are suitable as coverage films for cultural heritage protection.

Since the success of monolayer graphene exfoliation, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied due to their unique structures and unprecedented properties. Among these fascinating studies, the most predominant focus has been on their atomic structures, defects, and mechanical behaviors and properties, which serve as the basis for the practical applications of 2D materials. In this review, we first highlight the atomic structures of various 2D materials and the structural and energy features of some common defects. We then summarize the recent advances made in experimental, computational, and theoretical studies on the mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D materials. We mainly emphasized the underlying deformation and fracture mechanisms and the influences of various defects on mechanical behaviors and properties, which boost the emergence and development of topological design and defect engineering. We also further introduce the piezoelectric and flexoelectric behaviors of specific 2D materials to address the coupling between mechanical and electronic properties in 2D materials and the interactions between 2D crystals and substrates or between different 2D monolayers in heterostructures. Finally, we provide a perspective and outlook for future studies on the mechanical behaviors and properties of 2D materials.

The objective of present study is to determine the effects of grain size and deformation twin density on mechanical behaviors linked to microstructure evolution of AZ31 magnesium (Mg) alloy. The AZ31 Mg alloy was processed by warm sever plastic deformation method and followed by dynamic compression (strain rate ∼ 1 × 103 s−1, plastic strain ∼ 10%). Uniaxial tensile experiments at room temperature have revealed that AZ31 Mg alloy is exhibited enhanced strength with grain refinement and high deformation twin density. The improved strength of AZ31 Mg alloy is attributed to the hindering effect of increasing grain boundaries (GBs) and twin boundaries (TBs) on dislocation motion, thereby making plastic deformation more difficult. As a result, the large reduction in ductility has been found for fine grained AZ31 Mg alloy (grain size is about 2–3 μm). But with increasing deformation twin density after dynamic compression (especially in fine grained samples), the obvious ductility enhancement has been found in both coarse grained and fine grained AZ31 Mg alloy. With mechanical behaviors properly described, both strength and ductility can be simultaneously achieved in fine grained and high twin density AZ31 Mg alloy. • Dynamic compression and ECAP were used to microstructure tailoring. • Dynamic plastic deformation can effectively increase the twin sensitivity in Mg alloy. • Grain refinement and pre-twinning can improve the both strength and ductility in Mg alloy. • High twin density shows better improvement in ductility of Mg alloy. The straight and corrugated PHBHHx (Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxhexanoate)) vascular grafts with 6 mm inner diameters were prepared successfully by electrospinning. Moreover, their mechanical behaviors were investigated compared with the commercial vascular grafts (SW-ePTFE woven). Electrospun PHBHHx fibers had a submicron scale. Straight grafts and SW-ePTFE grafts exhibited higher Young's modulus and tensile breaking strength in the circumferential direction than the corrugated grafts, but the break and elastic recovery rate were lower. Both the straight and corrugated samples had lower suture strength than the SW-ePTFE samples, but still satisfied the requirement of transplantation of small diameter vascular. The compliance of corrugated grafts was similar to SW-ePTFE grafts and lower than straight grafts. The results of hemolytic and cytotoxicity tests demonstrated that both the straight and corrugated grafts had good hemocompatibility and no cytotoxicity. Therefore, the results of this study showed the potential application of electrospun PHBHHX vascular grafts as small diameter vascular grafts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In this work we examine, via density functional theory (DFT), material properties of the recently synthesized Lu-based MAX phase Lu 2 SnC and facilitate comparison with the Sn-containing MAX phases M 2 SnC (where M = Ti, Zr, Hf and Nb). Structural, elastic, mechanical, thermal and vibrational properties of Lu 2 SnC are calculated for the first time. In regard to the elastic properties and the mechanical behavior, it is predicted that Lu 2 SnC is softer and more easily machinable than the other examined M 2 SnC phases. All the M 2 SnC phases, including Lu 2 SnC, are mechanically and dynamically stable and elastically anisotropic. Calculated acoustic Debye temperature is lowest for Lu 2 SnC among the examined M 2 SnC phases. Clarke's and Slack's approximation models are employed to estimate the minimum and lattice thermal conductivities for all the 211 MAX compounds under study. Lu 2 SnC should have candidacy for thermal barrier coating (TBC) material because of its high thermal shock resistance, low minimum thermal conductivity, high melting point and characteristically good oxidation resistance. Ab-initio calculations presented in this study should be complementary to future experimental and theoretical work which can lead to further insights. Tendril-bearing climbing plants must recur to the tendril helices with chiral perversion or dual chirality for climbing and to obtain sun exposure. Despite researchers' prolonged fascination with climbing tendrils since Darwin's time and even earlier, why the soft and slender tendrils can bear heavy loads such as the self-weight of a plant or additional load caused by rain remains elusive. In this paper, we take towel gourd tendrils as an example and investigate the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviors of tendrils through experiments and simulations. Our study indicates that the tendril filament exhibits rubber-like hyperelastic behaviors and can particularly endure large elongation, which is mainly attributed to the superelasticity of the cellulose fibril helix contained in the cell wall. Combination of the tendril helical structure with dual chirality or chiral perversion at a macroscale and a cellulose filament helix at a subcellular level creates superior elasticity for biological species relying on support and climbing. This study provides deep insight into the structure–property relationship of climbing tendrils, and the relationship is useful for the bioinspired design of composite systems with superior elasticity. Cracking is an important phenomenon in the failure of geomaterials. The prediction of crack paths is difficult and challenging because of the randomness and uncertainty in the cracking behaviors of geomaterials. In this paper, to predict crack paths based on 2D X‐ray computed tomography (CT) images, a digital energy grade‐based approach is proposed, and the corresponding energy principle is established. Excellent consistency of crack paths is found between the predicted crack path and the real crack path of the specimen. The numerical results indicate that the proposed approach provides a useful way to predict cracking paths in geomaterials. Meanwhile, the stress and displacement fields before and after the specimen fails can be obtained by combining the proposed method with finite element (FE) analysis. Abstract Quasi-static 4-point bending behaviors and failure characteristics of a large scale composite C-beams fastened with multi-bolt joints were investigated experimentally and numerically. Strain gauge measurement and acoustic emission (AE) monitor system were used to monitor the mechanical response and damage development during loading process. The global and local characteristics of damage are presented and analyzed. A nonlinear numerical model with simplified bolt joints on ABAQUS platform was also established which could be used to efficient analyze the load distribution of bolts and accurately predict the nonlinear response of the composite C-section beams. The numerical results were verified by the experimental results within 10% error. From the finite element (FE) model results, the bolt load distribution and load transfer path were discussed. The results show that the surface skins of the beam take a higher portion of the load than beam web under pure bending load. The beam catastrophic failure is due to the bending load matches the compressive strength of the top composite skin. Abstract Niobium (Nb) as a refractory metal has appealing mechanical properties due to high ductility at room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed its intrinsic ductility by showing its perfect lattice generates an elastic shear deformation preceding its cleavage fracture under 〈 1 0 0 〉 ideal tensile deformation. Based on DFT calculations of simple atomic configurations, we applied an evolution strategy method to build a modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) spline-interpolation potential that can reproduce the intrinsic ductility of Nb during ideal tensile deformation. Further examinations show that simulations based on this MEAM potential can exhibit other essential characteristics of deformation behavior, such as ideal shear strengths, generalized stacking fault energies, twin boundary energies, phonon spectrum, etc., that are consistent with DFT calculations. This potential also outputs the structures, energetic stability and glide mechanism of 1 2 〈 1 1 1 〉 screw dislocations, such as dislocation core structures, core energies, migration barriers and dislocation core trajectories, consistent with DFT calculations. To study the influence of hydraulic slotting inclination on the mechanical behaviors of coal seam during mining process, uniaxial compression experiments on coal specimens with a single pre-existing flaw inclined at 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90° and intact specimens were conducted. Acoustic emission (AE) signals in the loading process were monitored, and fractal analysis method was introduced to investigate the AE characteristics. Additionally, the laboratory experiments were simulated by a finite element code. Both the experimental and numerical results show that the existence of a flaw reduces the mechanical properties of coal. The uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity increase polynomially and linearly with the increase of inclination angle, respectively. When the coal specimen ruptures finally, the fewer the surface secondary cracks or the more the sudden drops of stress, the smaller the peak value of AE count. According to the stress–strain curve, the loading process is divided into five stages: (I) compaction stage; (II) linear elastic stage; (III) stable crack propagation stage; (IV) accelerating crack propagation stage; (V) post peak and residual stage. AE fractal characteristics in various stages of each specimen were determined by Grassberger and Procaccia algorithm based on phase space reconstruction theory. AE count show fractal characteristics from stage III. The fractal dimension declines rapidly in stage IV, and continues to decline further or rise slightly in stage V, but both are lower than that in stage III. Abstract Widely existing in various underground engineering structures, rock masses containing unparallel fissures are likely to be subjected to static pre-stress and dynamic loads simultaneously. Understanding the effects of coupled static-dynamic strain rates on the mechanical and fracturing behaviors of rocks with unparallel fissures is significant for assessing the stability of rock engineering structures. In this study, the mechanical properties and the coalescence behaviors of both intact and fissured specimens under different coupled static-dynamic loads are investigated in the laboratory, involving four static pre-stress and three strain rates. Under the same dynamic strain rate, the coupled strength and the elastic modulus of both intact and fissured specimens first increase as the static pre-stress increases up to 50% uniaxial compression strength, and then decrease. However, under the same static pre-stress, the rock-like specimens with higher dynamic strain rate are characterized by higher coupled strength and elastic modulus. In the view of energy principle, under the same static pre-stress, more energy dissipates in the loading process and releases at the end of loading under higher dynamic strain rate. Nevertheless, at the same dynamic strain rate, the highest released elastic energy occurs under the static pre-stress of 50% uniaxial compression strength. All the rock-like specimens feature the prominent tensile splitting failure through the entire specimen, and five coalescence modes of fissured specimens are summarized in the present study. Abstract Previous studies revealed that Ni-based composites with in-situ formed TiC and γ′-Ni 3 (Al,Ti) reinforcements possess unusual microstructural and thermal features, which could greatly pin the grain growth as well as affect dislocation motion and contribute the mechanical performances. However, the as-prepared TiC-γ′/Ni composite reported previously is insufficiently strong for engineering applications, and the size and morphology of heterogeneous TiC-γ′ which have critically influenced mechanical properties are urgently needed to be optimized. In the present work, the tailored microstructural features were obtained under different fabrication procedures combined with subsequent heat treatments, which provides the insights about the factors influencing the critical strength in TiC-γ′/Ni composites. It was found that the synthesis temperature significantly affect the size and morphology of TiC particles, while they always remain thermodynamically stable under long-term annealing. However, annealing treatments contribute to the more amount of γ′ precipitation out of γ-Ni matrix. The TiC-γ′/Ni composites fabricated under 1200 °C with subsequent solution and aging treatments exhibit tensile strength of ∼1300 MPa with ∼6.2% ductility. The superior combination of strength and ductility can be attributed to the more homogenous distribution and location of ultrafine TiC (100–700 nm) and γ′ (50 nm) nanoparticles in the Ni matrix, which played a synergistic effect on determining the enhanced mechanical behaviors. Small plastic straining was combined with a two-step heat treatment to obtain grain refinement of the Co-28Cr-6Mo-0.33C alloy. The solution-treated specimens were furnace cooled to room temperature, obtaining partially transformed pearlite at grain boundaries. Afterward, the specimens were compressed up to 10% of engineering strain, followed by aging at 850 °C that contributed to the decomposition of the austenite phase into a lamellar eutectoid structure (α + M23C6). The full lamellar structure was then reverse-treated at temperatures from 1000 to 1237 °C, where the austenite phase was stable. The reversion treatment led to the nucleation of a fine-grained austenitic structure (with average size of 48.23 ± 21.30 μm—i.e., about 1/10 of its initial average size) at the lamellar eutectoid structure. Abstract The as-extruded Mg-xLi-3Al-1Zn (x = 1, 3, 5; wt%) sheets (LAZ131, LAZ331 and LAZ531 respectively) were performed with different reductions in multi-pass cold-rolling process. The changed mechanical behaviors of cold-rolled AZ31 alloys with Li additions were investigated via the electron-backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and texture. The results indicated that the main deformation modes of LAZ131 alloy were twinning and basal slip during cold rolling process. However, for the LAZ331 and LAZ531 alloy, the prismatic slip, { 11 2 ̅ 2 } pyramidal slip, {10 1 ̅ 2} extension twining, {10 1 ̅ 1} contraction twinning sequentially dominated in the deformation with increased rolling reduction. Then, the theoretical critical shear strength ( τ max ) (reflecting the critical resolved shear stress, CRSS) of Mg and Mg-Li crystal was characterized by first-principles calculation. The direct consequences from calculations indicated that the value of τ max decreased from 1571 MPa to 1276 MPa in pyramidal slip systems, while that increased from 114 MPa to 177 MPa in basal slip, due to doping Li to Mg single crystal. The decrease in τ max ratio between non-basal and basal may promote an easy activation of non-basal slip and show different deformation modes of cold-rolled AZ31 alloys with different Li additions. Abstract Cellular structures with controllable mechanical properties and porous architecture are the most promising candidates for many applications such as bone implants. Selective laser melting (SLM), one of the additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, enables manufacturing of space filling lattice structures with exceptional load bearing efficiency, customizable stiffness, controllable cell topology, cell size, and porosity. In this work, Schoen Gyroid (SG) unit cell, a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure, was used to design the cellular structures. As opposed to many other types of unit cells, SG has superior characteristics of self-supporting and high manufacturability for AM technologies. The titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–4V) SG cellular structures were manufactured by SLM. Finite element (FE) method was employed to predict the elastic modulus, compressive yield strength and stress/strain distributions of the SG cellular structures, and the failure occurrence mechanisms were analyzed. The FE results were compared with the experimental data. The results show that through FE method, the mechanical responses of the SG cellular structures can be accurately described and it is possible to customize the mechanical properties of SLM-produced titanium alloy TPMS lattices.
