Abstract

Accurately modeling memory timing in a processor simulator is crucial for obtaining accurate and useful performance predictions. DRAM has a complex timing and reordering scheme, which results in highly varying access latencies depending on the type of operations, address stream patterns and bandwidth load. Therefore, DRAM simulators model the DRAM timings as a clocked state machine. However, some processor simulators, in particular loosely synchronized parallel simulators, assume an immediate-response memory model, requesting an immediate estimation of the memory latency. In this letter, we discuss the modeling issues in transforming a state machine DRAM simulator into an immediate-response simulator, which can be directly plugged into a processor simulator supporting an immediate-response memory model and/or a relaxed parallel simulation model. We show that the adapted model is accurate within 2 percent compared to the state machine simulator.

Abstract

The Finite Element Method (FEM) suffers from important drawbacks in problems involving excessive deformation of elements despite being universally applied to a wide range of engineering applications. While dynamic remeshing is often offered as the ideal solution, its computational cost, numerical noise and mathematical limitations in complex geometries are impeding its widespread use. Meshless methods (MM), however, by not relying on mesh connectivity, circumvent some of these limitations, while remaining computationally more expensive than the classic FEM. These problems in MM can be improved by coupling with FEM in a FEM-MM scheme, in which MM is used within sensitive regions that undergo large deformations while retaining the more efficient FEM for other less distorted regions. Here, we present a numerical framework combining the benefits of FEM and MM to study large deformation scenarios without heavily compromising on computational efficiency. In particular, the latter is maintained through two mechanisms: (1) coupling of FEM and MM discretisation schemes within one problem, which limits MM discretisation to domains that cannot be accurately modelled in FEM, and (2) a simplified MM parallelisation approach which allows for highly efficient speed-up. The proposed approach treats the problem as a quadrature point driven problem, thus making the treatment of the constitutive models, and thus the matrix and vector assembly fully method-agnostic. The MM scheme considers the maximum entropy (max-ent) approximation, in which its weak Kronecker delta property is leveraged in parallel calculations by convexifying the subdomains, and by refining meshes at the boundary in such a way that the higher density of nodes is mainly concentrated within the bulk of the domain. The latter ensures obtaining the Kronecker delta property at the boundary of the MM domain. The results, demonstrated by means of a few applications, show an excellent scalability and a good balance between accuracy and computational cost. • A new framework coupling finite element (FEM) and meshless methods (MM) is proposed. • The approach is quadrature driven and method (FEM/MM)-agnostic. • A new remeshing strategy in convexified domains retains accuracy at boundaries. • The framework shows an excellent scalability. • It also shows a good balance between accuracy and computational cost. Abstract

Parallel traffic simulation requires partitioning the road network into several components that can be assigned to different computing nodes (CPNs). Existing studies focus more on reducing edge-cuts (message-passing pipes between CPNs) to decrease synchronization message amongst CPNs for efficiency improvement. However, even reducing edge-cuts drastically, the volume of messages transmitted might still be high, which does not significantly improve performance. Based on observation that some traffic clusters (TCs) exist during simulation, i.e., areas with high internal and low external traffic density. For high-performance urban transport simulation, we propose a data-driven parallel approach named PATRIC, which can generate parallel partitions automatically based on traffic clustering. Specifically, the TC-based automatic partitioner (TAP) is designed to automatically identify TCs and then construct partitions in parallel. We present a partition-growing algorithm that prevents traffic-intensive TCs being split across multiple CPNs when distributing computing workloads, resulting in more balanced load and fewer synchronization operations. Unlike prior work using fixed thresholds for load balancing, we develop the adaptive partition updater (APU) to fit the dynamic traffic in the road network, which achieves a better trade-off between balancing workload and lowering communication for higher efficiency. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. • A high-performance urban transport simulation framework built on traffic clustering. • A better distribution of cross-CPN agents globally reduces synchronization operations. • Adaptive parallel scheme based on changes of traffic clusters. • The proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on real-world datasets. Cloud simulation environments today are largely employed to model and simulate complex systems for remote accessibility and variable capacity requirements. In this regard, scalability issues in Modeling and Simulation (M & S) computational requirements can be tackled through the elasticity of on-demand Cloud deployment. However, implementing a high performance cloud M & S framework following these elastic principles is not a trivial task as parallelizing and distributing existing architectures is challenging. Indeed, both the parallel and distributed M & S developments have evolved following separate ways. Parallel solutions has always been focused on ad-hoc solutions, while distributed approaches, on the other hand, have led to the definition of standard distributed frameworks like the High Level Architecture (HLA) or influenced the use of distributed technologies like the Message Passing Interface (MPI). Only a few developments have been able to evolve with the current resilience of computing hardware resources deployment, largely focused on the implementation of Simulation as a Service (SaaS), albeit independently of the parallel ad-hoc methods branch. In this paper, we present a unified parallel and distributed M & S architecture with enough flexibility to deploy parallel and distributed simulations in the Cloud with a low effort, without modifying the underlying model source code, and reaching important speedups against the sequential simulation, especially in the parallel implementation. Our framework is based on the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. Abstract

CRUE-CSIC (Acuerdos Transformativos 2022), Employing Modeling and Simulation (M&S) extensively to analyze and develop complex systems is the norm today. The use of robust M&S formalisms and rigorous methodologies is essential to deal with complexity. Among them, the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) provides a solid framework for modeling structural, behavior and information aspects of any complex system. This gives several advantages to analyze and design complex systems: completeness, verifiability, extensibility, and maintainability. DEVS formalism has been implemented in many programming languages and executable on multiple platforms. In this paper, we describe the features of an M&S framework called xDEVS that builds upon the prevalent DEVS Application Programming Interface (API) for both modeling and simulation layers, promoting interoperability between the existing platform-specific (C++, Java, Python) DEVS implementations. Additionally, the framework can simulate the same model using sequential, parallel, or distributed architectures. The M&S engine has been reinforced with several strategies to improve performance, as well as tools to perform model analysis and verification. Finally, xDEVS also facilitates systems engineers to apply the vision of model-based systems engineering (MBSE), model-driven engineering (MDE), and model-driven systems engineering (MDSE) paradigms. 113. Transaction-Level Modeling of Deep Neural Networks for Efficient Parallelism and Memory Accuracy

Abstract

The emergence of data-intensive applications, such as Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), exacerbates the well-known memory bottleneck in computer systems and demands early attention in the design flow. Electronic System-Level (ESL) design using Transaction Level Modeling (TLM) enables early performance estimation, efficient design space exploration, and gradual refinement. In this dissertation, we present our exploratory modeling framework for hardware-software codesign based on IEEE SystemC TLM with particular focus on exposing parallelism and memory contention. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for representative large DNNs such as GoogLeNet and Single Shot MultiBox Detector.First, we study the impact of communication mechanisms on the available parallelism in TLM models. Specifically, we demonstrate the impact of varying synchronization mechanisms and buffering schemes on the exposed parallelism using different modeling styles of a DNN. We measure the performance of aggressive out-of-order parallel discrete event simulation and analyze the available parallelism in the models. Our study suggests that increased parallel simulation performance indicates better models with higher amounts of parallelism exposed.Second, we explore the critical aspects of modeling and analysis of timing accuracy with the respect to memory contention. A major hurdle in tackling the memory bottleneck is the detection of memory contention late in the design cycle when detailed timed or cycle-accurate models are developed. A bottleneck detected at such a late stage can severely limit the available design choices or even require costly redesign. To explore new architectures prior to RTL implementation, we propose a novel TLM-2.0 loosely-timed contention-aware (LT-CA) modeling style that offers high-speed simulation close to traditional loosely-timed (LT) models, yet shows the same accuracy for memory contention as low level approximately-timed (AT) models.Finally, we further refine

Abstract

The simulation of complex power grid adopts the method of model segmentation. The system is divided into two or more subsystems. Each subsystem is calculated and solved in different computing units. Because the simulation model runs on different hardware, the time synchronization between subsystems may bring errors and stability problems. In this paper, a time synchronization method based on virtual power is proposed. It is assumed that there is a virtual load composed of resistance and inductance between different simulation subsystems, and two identical voltage sources are set at both terminals of the virtual load. When there is no time error between the subsystems, the power consumed by the virtual load should be zero, otherwise virtual power will be generated. The virtual power is sent to the PI regulator as the error signal, and the output of the regulator is used as the time error correction signal of the subsystem until the virtual power is zero, so as to realize the clock synchronization between multiple computers. In this paper, the theoretical analysis and implementation method of this time synchronization scheme are given in detail, and the simulation results show that the method is correct.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical modeling and simulation of incompressible laminar mixed convection in rotating channels using parallel lattice Boltzmann method. Individual distribution functions with D3Q19 and D3Q6 lattice types were considered to solve fluid flow and heat transfer problems, respectively. The Reynolds number was set to 100, and wall-to-inlet fluid density ratio was set to 0.2. Two rotation modes namely orthogonal and parallel modes were considered with rotation number equal to 0.2. LBM code was written in C language and was parallelized using OpenMP libraries. Domain decomposition method of data parallelism was adopted here, and simulations were conducted on a workstation with dual processors and 64 GB RAM. Abstract

Hybrid systems such as Cyber Physical System (CPS) are becoming increasingly popular, mainly due to the involvement of information technology in different aspects of life. For analysis and verification of hybrid system models, simulation is used extensively. As parts of a common hybrid system may belong to different domains of study, it is sometimes beneficial to use specialized simulation packages (SPs) for each domain. In this case, parts of a system are simulated in different SPs. The idea may seem simple, but coupling more than one simulation component presents challenges related to numerical stability. The presented article suggests an implicit solver coupling technique enhanced to facilitate simulation of hybrid models using multiple simulation components. The technique is developed using two of the most popular simulation interoperability standards, namely, the High Level Architecture and the Functional Mock-up Interface. By using these standards, the developed algorithm will be useful for a large number of practitioners and researchers. The developed algorithm is described using a generic distributed computation model, which makes it reproducible even without using the standards. For the verification of results, the algorithm is tested on two case studies. Abstract

Road traffic simulation is a useful tool for studying road traffic and evaluating solutions to traffic problems. Large-scale agent-based road traffic simulation is computationally intensive, which triggers the need for conducting parallel simulation. This paper deals with the synchronization problem in parallel agent-based road traffic simulation to reduce the overall simulation execution time. We aim to reduce synchronization operations by introducing some redundant computation to the simulation. There is a trade-off between the benefit of reduced synchronization operations and the overhead of redundant computation. The challenge is to minimize the total overhead of redundant computation and synchronization. First, to determine the amount of redundant computation, we proposed a way to define extended layers of partitions in the road network. The sizes of extended layers are determined by the behavior of agents and the topology of road networks. Second, due to the dynamic nature of road traffic, a heuristic was proposed to adjust the amount of redundant computation according to traffic conditions during simulation run-time to minimize the overall simulation execution time. The efficiency of the proposed method was investigated in a parallel agent-based road traffic simulator using real-world network and trip data. Abstract

Due to synchronization overhead, it is challenging to apply the parallel simulation technique of multi-core processors at larger scales. Although the use of lax synchronization schemes could reduce overhead and balance the load between synchronous points, it introduces timing error and deteriorates simulation accuracy. Through observing the propagation paths of errors, we find that these paths always concentrate on some pivotal events. Based on the observation, we design a delay-calibration mechanism to alleviate errors. We decouple the timing and functional processes of the pivotal events, leveraging prediction technique of delays to connect two categories of the processes. Errors are traced throughout the timing processes of the pivotal events, and are deducted from the predicted delays before the delays are consumed by the functional processes. Therefore, through cleaning the errors at the successive pivot events, the mechanism decreases the simulated time deviations efficiently. Since the prediction and error deduction processes do not have any constraint on synchronizations, our approach largely maintains the scalability of lax synchronization schemes. Furthermore, our proposal is orthogonal to other parallel simulation techniques and can be used in conjunction with them. Experimental results show that error compensation improves the accuracy of lax synchronized simulations by 68 percent and achieves 97.8 percent accuracy when combined with an enhanced lax synchronization. Abstract

In this article, we present the design of a novel parallel architecture simulator called ParTejas. ParTejas is a timing simulation engine that gets its execution traces from instrumented binaries using a fast shared-memory-based mechanism. Subsequently, the waiting threads simulate the execution of multiple pipelines and an elaborate memory system with support for multilevel coherent caches. ParTejas is written in Java and primarily derives its speedups from the use of novel data structures. Specifically, it uses lock-free slot schedulers to design an entity called a parallel port that effectively models the contention at shared resources in the CPU and memory system. Parallel ports remove the need for fine-grained synchronization and allow each thread to use its local clock. Unlike conventional simulators that use barriers for synchronization at epoch boundaries, we use a sophisticated type of barrier, known as a phaser. A phaser allows threads to perform additional work without waiting for other threads to arrive at the barrier. Additionally, we use a host of Java-specific optimizations and use profiling to effectively schedule the threads. With all our optimizations, we demonstrate a speedup of 11.8× for a multi-issue in-order pipeline and 10.9× for an out-of-order pipeline with 64 threads, for a suite of seven Splash2 and Parsec benchmarks.
