The paper presents part of the research on model development of pollen dispersion and pollen deposition in an urban canopy layer. The CFD code StarCD was used as the basic computational tool for carried out studies. Three different approaches of pollen deposition was tested in two different scale numerical models, namely the regional-scale model covering area of 144 km² and the micro-scale model covering area of 1 km². The tested pollen deposition approaches were based on the following assumptions: (i) the deposition velocity prescribed in accordance with the sedimentation velocity; (ii) the zero pollen concentration prescribed on the ground surface; (iii) the deposition considered in accordance with the experimental deposition velocity. The objective of the study is to compare pollen concentration fields obtained from calculations utilising different simplified mathematical descriptions of pollen deposition in a vegetation cover of the ground surface. Although avocado is native to Mexico, there are no comparative measures in this country on the performance of its flower visitors as pollinators. The contribution of honey bees, flies and wasps to the pollination of avocado from tropical Mexico was assessed by comparing abundance, speed of flower visitation, quantity of pollen carried per individual and pollen deposited on virgin flowers after single visits. The values of abundance and frequency of flower visitation with pollen deposition were combined to obtain a measure of pollinator performance (PP). The most abundant insects on avocado were flies (mean ± SE: 15. 2 ± 6.2), followed by honey bees (9.4 ± 6.3) and wasps (4.2 ± 3.1) (ANOVA F = 91.71, d.f. = 2,78; P < 0.001). Honey bees and wasps visited similar number of flowers (8.2 ± 3.1 and 7.5 ± 2.6 respectively), and more than flies (4.1 ± 1.2) in the same time period (F = 17.63; d.f. = 2,33; P < 0.01). Although flies carried far more avocado pollen on their bodies (44.9 ± 16.8 grains) compared with honey bees and wasps, (21.3 ± 6.2 and 23.8 ± 8.11 grains, respectively; H = 26.522, df = 2, P = 0.001), the number of pollen grains deposited on a stigma after a single visit was similar for the three taxa (2-5). There was evidence for a significant and similarly positive PP of both honey bees and flies as avocado pollinators over wasps, given their abundance, potential for pollen transport and deposition of pollen on stigmas. * Premise of the study: Exceptions to the ideal of complete reproductive isolation between species are commonly encountered in diverse plant, animal, and fungal groups, but often the causative ecological processes are poorly understood. In flowering plants, the outcome of hybridization depends in part on the effectiveness of pollinators in interspecific pollen transport. In the Asclepias exaltata and A. syriaca (Apocynaceae) hybrid zone in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, extensive introgression has been documented. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the extent of pollinator overlap among A. exaltata, A. syriaca, and their hybrids and (2) identify the insect taxa responsible for hybridization and introgression. * Methods: We observed focal plants of parental species and hybrids to measure visitation rate, visit duration, and per-visit pollinia removal and deposition, and we calculated pollinator effectiveness and importance. * Key results: Visitation rates varied significantly between the 2 yr of the study. Overall, Apis mellifera , Bombus sp., and Epargyreus clarus were the most important pollinators. However, Bombus sp. was the only visitor that was observed to both remove and insert pollinia for both parent species as well as hybrids. * Conclusions: We conclude that Bombus may be a key agent of hybridization and introgression in these sympatric milkweed populations, and hybrids are neither preferred nor selected against by pollinators. Thus, we have identified a potential mechanism for how hybrids act as bridges to gene flow between A. exaltata and A. syriaca. Besides competition for abiotic resources, an increasing number of studies show evidence of the effects of invasive species on the pollination success and reproductive output of indigenous species. We studied the effect of the invasive Impatiens glandulifera Royle on the process of reproduction in the indigenous Lythrum salicaria L. and Alisma plantago- aquatica L. and the naturalized Oenothera biennis L. The latter three species (target species) were transplanted into pots and placed in invaded and non-invaded areas. During flowering season of each of these species, we measured species composition and abundance of pollinators, pollinator behaviour, pollen deposition and female reproductive output of the target species. Competitive effects were found for L. salicaria, in which fewer pollinator species and number of foraging individuals were observed, and also, lower pollen deposition and seed set were measured in these invaded populations. In contrast, the reproductive success of A. plantago- aquatica and O. biennis was not affected by the presence of I. glandulifera. Our data indicate that when invasive and indigenous species show a large overlap in pollinator community, which is the case for I. glandulifera and L. salicaria, competition between these species can occur. When both species have a different pollinator community, pollination success and reproductive output is not affected, even when the indigenous populations are densely and abundantly invaded. It is widely recognized that pollinators vary in their effectiveness in pollination mutualisms, due both to differences in flower-pollinator morphological fit as well as pollinator behaviour. However, pollination webs typically treat all interactions as equal, and we contend that this method may provide misleading results. Using empirical and theoretical data, we present the case study of a self-incompatible herb in which the number of flowers visited by a pollinator cannot be used as a surrogate for the total effect of a pollinator on a plant due to differences in per-visit effectiveness at producing seeds. In self-incompatible species, the relationship between interaction frequency and per-interaction effect may become increasingly negative as more flowers per plant are visited due to geitonogamous pollen transfer. We found that pollinators making longer bouts (i.e. visiting more flowers per plant visit) had an overall higher pollination success per bout. However, per-interaction effects tended to decrease as the bout progressed, particularly for pollinators that cause higher pollen deposition. Since the same interaction frequency may result from different combinations of number of bouts (plant visits) and bout length (flowers visited/bout), pollinators making repeatedly shorter bouts may contribute more to plant reproduction for the same number of flowers visited. Consequently, the magnitude of the differences in number of interactions of different insect types may be overridden by the magnitude of the differences in effectiveness as pollinators, even if the same pollinators consistently interact more frequently. We discuss two predictions regarding the validity of using interaction frequency as a surrogate for plant seed production (as a measure of total effect), depending on the degree of self-compatibility, plant size and floral display. We suggest that the role of interaction frequency must be tested for different species, environments, and across wider scales to validate its use as a surrogate for total effect in plant-pollinator networks. One major characteristic of invasive alien species is their occurrence at high abundances in their new habitat. Flowering invasive plant species that are visited by native insects and overlap with native plant species in their pollinators may facilitate or disrupt native flower visitation and fertilisation by forming large, dense populations with high numbers of flowers and copious rewards. We investigated the direction of such a proposed effect for the alien invasive Rhododendron ponticum in Irish habitats. Flower visitation, conspecific and alien pollen deposition, fruit and seed set were measured in a self-compatible native focal plant, Digitalis purpurea, and compared between field sites that contained different relative abundances of R. ponticum. Flower visitation was significantly lower at higher alien relative plant abundances than at lower abundances or in the absence of the alien. Native flowers experienced a significant decrease in conspecific pollen deposition with increasing alien abundance. Heterospecific pollen transfer was very low in all field sites but increased significantly with increasing relative R. ponticum abundance. However, lower flower visitation and lower conspecific pollen transfer did not alter reproductive success of D. purpurea. Our study shows that indirect interactions between alien and native plants for pollination can be modified by population characteristics (such as relative abundance) in a similar way as interactions among native plant species. In D. purpurea, only certain aspects of pollination and reproduction were affected by high alien abundances which is probably a result of high resilience due to a self-compatible breeding system. Many antagonistic species attack plants and consume specific plant parts. Understanding how these antagonists affect plant fitness individually and in combination is an important research focus in ecology and evolution. We examined the individual and combined effects of herbivory, nectar robbing, and pre-dispersal seed predation on male and female estimates of fitness in the host plant Ipomopsis aggregata. By examining the effects of antagonists on plant traits, we were able to tease apart the direct consumptive effects of antagonists versus the indirect effects mediated through changes in traits important to pollination. In a three-way factorial field experiment, we manipulated herbivory, nectar robbing, and seed predation. Herbivory and seed predation reduced some male and female fitness estimates, whereas plants tolerated the effects of robbing. The effects of herbivory, robbing, and seed predation were primarily additive, and we found little evidence for non-additive effects of multiple antagonists on plant reproduction. Herbivory affected plant reproduction through both direct consumptive effects and indirectly through changes in traits important to pollination (i.e., nectar and phenological traits). Conversely, seed predators primarily had direct consumptive effects on plants. Our results suggest that the effects of multiple antagonists on estimates of plant fitness can be additive, and investigating which traits respond to damage can provide insight into how antagonists shape plant performance. * Premise of the study: Even though pollen deposition schedules may have profound effects on the evolutionary outcome of pollen competition, few studies have investigated such effects in relation to pistil traits such as delayed stigma receptivity that enhance pollen competition. In Collinsia heterophylla, a largely outcrossing species with delayed stigma receptivity, we performed a series of controlled crosses involving several donors to understand how timing of pollen deposition influences siring ability, paternal diversity, and offspring fitness. * Methods: Pollen was applied to fully receptive stigmas either as mixtures or consecutively with or without a time lag to mimic cases with early or delayed stigma receptivity. We used a genetic marker to assess offspring paternity. * Key results: As expected, siring ability was affected by application order in crosses without a time lag, providing a first-donor advantage for pollen arriving on unreceptive stigmas. However, because pollen donor identity influenced siring ability, delaying stigma receptivity may still favor pollen of high competitive ability. In crosses on fully receptive pistils with a time lag of 24 h, a surprisingly high proportion of seeds (12 - 47%) were sired by pollen applied last. A novel finding was that pollen applied only once (as a mixture), mimicking delayed stigma receptivity, led to higher paternal diversity within progeny families, which was associated with increased seed production. * Conclusions: Our results suggest fitness advantages of enhancing pollen competition by delaying stigma receptivity in C. heterophylla, particularly in relation to increased paternal diversity. One 2.5 m lacustrine sedimentary profile dated back to 6340 years BP from Deosila swamp under Rangjuli Reserve forest of Assam, Northeast India has been pollen analyzed for tracing past vegetation vis à vis climate variability since mid-Holocene. The pollen diagram has deciphered that during 6340 to 2970 years BP, tropical tree savannah type of vegetation grew in the region chiefly constituted of grasses interspersed with scattered trees of Salmalia, Dillenia, Emblica, Meliaceae along with sporadic presence of Artocarpus chaplasha, Symplocos, Ilex, Schima and Shorea robusta under relatively less cool and dry climatic condition with a little ameliorating trend at the upper column. The vegetation scenario implies poor growth of arboreals due to harsh abiotic dynamics causing changes in drainage system. Subsequently during 2970 to 1510 years BP, tropical mixed deciduous forest succeeded tree savannah with invasion of Shorea robusta, Lagerstroemia, Lannea, Semecarpus and Acacia under warm and humid climate. The gradual enrichment of organic soil might have been conducive for better growth of both deciduous and semi evergreen arboreals as found today. However, during 1510 to 540 years BP, the forest groves became more strengthened resulting establishment of tropical deciduous Sal forest. Steady increment of Shorea robusta along with Lannea, Lagerstroemia, Terminalia, Sapotaceae, Albizia and Adina was observed probably due to influence of active SW monsoon under increased warm and humid climatic regime. This is well substantiated by the consistent occurrence of marshy and aquatic taxa along with ferns and fungal remains. Finally during 540 years BP onward the reduced forest floristics have obviously been envisaged the change in climate which turned to warm and relatively dry probably attributable to the weak monsoon rainfall. The acceleration in human settlement during this phase is evidenced by Cerealia and by the increase of Melastoma, Ziziphus and Areca catechu implying forest clearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taxonomically related species can differ in a number of reproductive traits, which may translate into a differential mating system and pollination success. Here we compare two hermaphroditic insect-pollinated Daphne species ( D. rodriguezii and D. gnidium) which differ in distribution (island endemic vs. mediterranean) and floral traits (long- vs. short-tube corolla). We investigated their mating system and pollen limitation by means of hand-pollination experiments and quantified the diversity and abundance of flower visitors by direct observations. Plant size and five reproductive traits (flower production, proportion of viable anthers, pollen production, flower tube length and tepal area) were studied to assess how they contribute to reproductive success, measured as proportion of pollen grains germinated per stigma and fruit set. Selfing was very low and pollen limitation existed in both species, though was higher in D. rodriguezii probably due to the scarcity of flower visitors. The low fruit set in both species suggests that most of the pollen grains found on stigmas are self-pollen. Pollinators appeared to favour some floral traits (specifically, flower tube length or tepal area) in both species, although flower crop in D. rodriguezii was the only reproductive trait influencing fruit set . In both species, the highest variability in reproductive traits and pollination success was within individuals. Our findings suggest that despite both species showed similar mating system, dependency on outcrossing pollen and selection of floral traits, pollen limitation was higher in D. rodriguezii, probably as a higher proportion of self-pollen arrives to its stigmas. Measuring pollinator performance has become increasingly important with emerging needs for risk assessment in conservation and sustainable agriculture that require multi-year and multi-site comparisons across studies. However, comparing pollinator performance across studies is difficult because of the diversity of concepts and disparate methods in use. Our review of the literature shows many unresolved ambiguities. Two different assessment concepts predominate: the first estimates stigmatic pollen deposition and the underlying pollinator behaviour parameters, while the second estimates the pollinator's contribution to plant reproductive success, for example in terms of seed set. Both concepts include a number of parameters combined in diverse ways and named under a diversity of synonyms and homonyms. However, these concepts are overlapping because pollen deposition success is the most frequently used proxy for assessing the pollinator's contribution to plant reproductive success. We analyse the diverse concepts and methods in the context of a new proposed conceptual framework with a modular approach based on pollen deposition, visit frequency, and contribution to seed set relative to the plant's maximum female reproductive potential. A system of equations is proposed to optimize the balance between idealised theoretical concepts and practical operational methods. Our framework permits comparisons over a range of floral phenotypes, and spatial and temporal scales, because scaling up is based on the same fundamental unit of analysis, the single visit. Many nonnative plants require pollinators to produce the seed needed to establish beyond their native range. Local variation in pollination can cause variation in mating patterns, reproductive output, genetic diversity, and selection, which can influence invasion dynamics. We quantified pollinator visitation, pollen deposition, and pollen limitation of reproduction in the invasive shrub Lonicera maackii in adjacent forest edge and forest interior habitats. Flowers in edge habitats received as many or more pollinator visits than those in interior habitats, resulting in twofold greater pollen deposition and nearly twice as many seeds produced per flower. Supplemental pollination increased seed production over open pollination by 37%-145% in both edge and interior habitats. Edge flowers produced more seed than interior flowers. Despite greater pollen deposition in edge habitats, the magnitude of pollen limitation was similar to interior plants. Thus, different mechanisms of pollen limitation characterize these habitats. Pollen receipt and other resources limited reproduction of interior plants, which were located in a shady environment. Pollen quality likely limited reproduction of edge plants, because pollinators visited more flowers per plant and likely delivered more geitonogamous pollen in this habitat than in the interior. Abstract: Detailed knowledge of the relationships between modern pollen deposition and actual vegetation on both regional and local scales is valuable for correct interpretation of fossil pollen samples. We collected surface pollen samples and recorded all vascular plant species and their cover in 55 plots of 100 m2, located along five transects in the steppe, forest and tundra of the valleys of the Russian Altai Mountains. We compared proportions of plant species in actual vegetation and their pollen types in surface pollen spectra along each transect. Of the total of 144 pollen taxa, 54 were represented sufficiently in both pollen and vegetation to allow correlation analysis, and 47 showed a significant positive correlation (p <0.05) between their proportion in the pollen and the proportion of corresponding plant species in the vegetation. These included trees and shrubs (Betula nana type, Larix, Lonicera, Picea obovata, Salix and Spiraea), many herbs or dwarf shrubs, and strong (e.g. Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae) as well as weak pollen producers (e.g. Aconitum, Astragalus/Oxytropis type, Bupleurum, Dryas oxyodonta, Hedysarum/Onobrychis type, Polemonium, Swertia obtusa, and Trollius). Pollen of Larix was a good indicator of Larix forests if they occurred in an open steppe or forest-steppe landscape, but became a poor indicator in more forested landscapes where pollen of other trees confounded the Larix pollen signal. Artemisia pollen, although generally considered a poor indicator that is overrepresented in pollen spectra, appeared to be a fairly good indicator on a larger spatial scale, discriminating between large steppe areas on the one hand and forest-steppe and forest-tundra landscapes on the other. We conclude that considering the whole pollen spectra, including weak pollen producers, is important for pollen-based reconstruction of past vegetation diversity. Our results also suggest that pollen spectra can change remarkably over short distances, especially in landscapes with a high diversity of vegetation types, which should be taken into account when we interpret vegetation diversity on the basis of fossil pollen spectra. Background and Aims: In Australia, honey-bees have invaded systems that evolved without social insect pollinators, where many plants are adapted to vertebrate pollination. Behavioural differences between pollinators are likely to influence mating patterns, but few studies have examined this empirically in long-lived, woody, perennials. It was shown previously that outcrossing rates in Grevillea macleayana vary among populations. Here tests were conducted to determine whether the behaviour of birds and honey-bees differed between a population previously found to be highly outcrossed and two inbreeding populations. Pollination success of plants is highly susceptible to the frequency of visits and foraging behavior of pollinators. Pollination of the nectarless flowers of Pedicularis species depends on bumblebee workers collecting pollen by vibrating the anthers (buzz pollination). However, little is known about the efficiency of the pollination system. Foraging behavior, pollen removal from anthers and pollen deposition on stigmas of P. chamissonis were studied to assess the effectiveness of buzz pollination in an alpine snowbed population of northern Japan. Although bumblebees tended to visit most of the flowers open at a given time within inflorescences during a single visit, pollen removal rate at the first visit was about 20%, and buzzing period decreased with increasing number of previous visits, resulting in a decreasing proportion of pollen removed per visit as the number of visits increased. These trends enable plants to provide pollen for more pollinators. The number of pollen grains deposited on stigmas was not saturated during the first visit and increased with additional visits. Irrespective of weak self-compatibility, evidence of interference between self and outcross pollen was lacking for seed production. Therefore, buzz pollination in P. chamissonis acts as a mechanism that improves the chance of cross-pollination upon multiple visits if pollinator visitation is frequent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pollen and spores of terrestrial plants found in marine sediments are excellent proxies for paleovegetation and paleoclimate reconstructions of surrounding areas. Ascertaining the pollen transport mechanism from terrestrial to oceanic environments is crucial for the interpretation of pollen data from marine sediments. In this study, we present the distribution of suspended sediments and pollen from 59 surface ocean water samples collected during September and October of 2013, in the northern South China Sea (SCS). The results suggest that there is a difference between the transmission mechanisms of suspended sediment and pollen/spores. Suspended sediment (silt, coarse sand, and gravel) settle quickly in nearshore and continental shelf waters due to their density. Alternately, small, light-weight pollen grains can be carried over long distances in a marine setting. The density of suspended sediment has a high correlation with the concentrations of Pinus , evergreen Quercus , Poaceae and Cyperaceae pollen as well as fern spores (e.g., Dicranopteris), but no correlation with total pollen concentration. This finding will broaden the understanding of the relationships between suspended sediments and pollen in the northern SCS and help to better interpret pollen records extracted from marine sediment cores from the SCS. • 59 sea surface water pollen samples in the northern South China Sea were investigated. • Close relationship between the densities of suspended sediment and the percentages of Pinus , evergreen Quercus , Poaceae and Cyperaceae pollen and spores. • Relatively low values of Pinus , Podocarpus and the evergreen Quercus pollen seem to be correlated with the flowering season. This study examines the pattern of preservation of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs on bat guano samples in Eraaning Cave in relation to the current vegetation of the surrounding Garo hills of Meghalaya. It is observed that, the recorded pollen data does reflect the tropical mixed deciduous forest with an admixture of riparian and evergreen plant taxa from the local and regional vegetation. The presence of evergreen and riparian taxa namely, Mesua , Schima , Duabanga , and Syzygium in the pollen assemblage is strongly indicative of the high rainfall in the region. The recovery of fern and fungal spores in the pollen assemblage also reflects the warm and humid climatic condition in this region. The forestland and open-land samples from the vicinity of the cave were also studied to understand the nature of pollen preservation in relation to the bat guano samples. The presence of cereal, Areca , Psidium , and Citrus along with Melastoma pollen in both bat guano and open-land samples is indicative of the anthropogenic activities in and around the study area. Multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) and box plot were applied to the quantified data obtained from pollen frequency analyses which clearly revealed a significant variation and similarity in vegetation types among the surface samples collected in and around Eraaning Cave. The generated pollen data from the bat guano, forestland, and open-land samples reveals that, bat guano in cave sediments provides a reliable substrate to understand the modern pollen and vegetation relationship and can fruitfully be utilized as a baseline for the reconstruction of the palaeoecology in the Garo hills of Meghalaya. We compared two >20 year long data sets of airborne and deposited pollen from northern Finnish Lapland (Kevo) and the middle boreal forest zone (Oulu) in terms of the plant taxa represented and their annual pollen quantities. Tree pollen (Betula spp., Pinus sylvestris) made up 92.8% of the total annual pollen in the air samples at Kevo, while in the ground-level deposition samples the tree pollen fraction was 61.5%; the remaining 38.5% comprising pollen of ground and field level plants (Ericaceae, Cyperaceae and others). In Oulu, the proportion of tree pollen in the air and deposition samples was 90.6% and 89.0%, respectively. The annual fluctuations in the quantity of total pollen and tree pollen in both sampling systems were correlated, but no such correlation was detected for the low growing plants, except in the case of Urticaceae at Kevo. This suggests that pollen of these low-growing plants mainly reflects the vegetation of the sampling site. Because tree pollen rises well into the atmosphere, it reflects pollen production from a larger area. Long-range transported Betula spp. pollen recorded in the atmosphere prior to local flowering comprised a considerable part of the Betula spp. pollen at Kevo and was collected by both sampling systems. Flower morphology and pollinator dynamics play an important role in the evolution and maintenance of many breeding systems, including andromonoecy. We used a series of field experiments to test the functional relationship between flower morphology and pollination dynamics (e.g., pollen receipt and export) in Solanum carolinense. We find that long-styled flowers serve primarily as pollen recipients and short-styled flowers as pollen donors, making this the first study to support the male-female interference hypothesis for the evolution of andromonoecy. However, this difference in the primary male or female function of the flowers depends on the poflinator identity. In flowers visited by Bombus impatiens, style length has a positive relationship with pollen deposition and a negative relationship with pollen removal. In contrast, neither morphological nor behavioral traits determine pollen deposition or removal by small halictid bees. We demonstrate that different pollinators could select for different floral morphologies, and thus, our research suggests that pollinator-specific interactions with flower morphology play an important role in the evolution and maintenance of anrdromonoecy. Distyly typically involves reciprocal polymorphism in stamen and style lengths and a set of associated polymorphisms of pollen and stigma characters. This flower polymorphism has been regarded as a strategy to reduce the likelihood of self- and intramorph pollination and to promote legitimate intermorph pollination. Although most distylous plants are characterized by a physiological self- and intramorph-incompatibility system, previous work on Pulmonaria affinis and other distylous Boraginaceae species have shown that self-incompatibility was not strict. In this study, we examined pollen deposition rates and the functioning of the distylous breeding system in Pulmonaria officinalis. Flowers exhibited reciprocal herkogamy and several other ancillary features of heterostyly. Controlled pollinations clearly showed weak self-incompatibility, with the LS-morph showing higher rates of seed set following self-, intramorph- and intermorph-pollinations than the SS-individuals. On the other hand, SS-pollen showed higher germination rates and pollen tube growth than that of LS-pollen. Under natural conditions, both the proficiency of legitimate pollen transfer and the proportion of deposited pollen were asymmetrical. Although SS-pollen grains showed a higher proficiency for legitimate transfer than that of LS-pollen on a per pollen basis, the ratio of legitimate to illegitimate deposited pollen on stigmas of SS-flowers markedly exceeded that of LS-flowers. The latter was explained by the higher pollen production rates of LS-individuals compared to SS-individuals. High levels of illegitimate pollen deposition on LS-stigmas, on the other hand, were attributed to the limited proboscis length of the principal pollinators and the occurrence of floral hairs at the corolla entrance of LS-flowers. This study thus indicates asymmetrical pollen transport patterns and morph-specific differences in the strength of the incompatibility system; two aspects that may affect female reproductive success and morph ratio variation under pollen limited conditions. High-resolution analysis of ombrogenous peats often reveals pollen frequencies that change markedly from one sample to the next, indicating limited postdepositional mixing. This raises the question whether - with sufficiently thin samples - seasonal differences in pollen deposition can be observed. Seasonal resolution in peat would provide a dating technique with an accuracy similar to that of other, annually banded archives. To study the limits of temporal resolution, contiguous 0.5 mm thick slices of slightly humified Sphagnum section Cuspidata peat were palynologically analysed. No seasonal patterns in the pollen stratigraphy could be observed. This is ascribed to the mixing of pollen grains as a result of small-scaled vertical water movements and to the horizontal mode of shoot layering in the Sphagnum species. The latter process may also be the cause of a smoothed annual signal. Because of the absence of seasonal differentiation, the palynological distinction of annual peat layers is not feasible. Abstract: With the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops, predictive tools modelling wind velocity and pollen concentration fields as well as pollen deposition rate over heterogeneous canopies are required to assess the cross-pollination rates between GM and conventional crops. Over the last decade several numerical flow models have been developed to simulate dynamic mean and turbulent fields within and above the vegetation layer. In this paper, an Eulerian advection–diffusion conservation equation for pollen particles has been incorporated into one of these flow models, Aquilon. The relative velocity between air parcels and particles is simply represented through the addition of a particle settling velocity, i.e. the particle fall velocity in still fluid. The dynamic part of this model has been previously validated in two-dimensional heterogeneous cases (roughness change, forest edge flow) and tested in a more complex three-dimensional heterogeneous case (urban forested park). In order to test the ability of this Eulerian approach to simulate accurately airborne pollen concentration and pollen deposition rate within and above heterogeneous vegetation canopies, the model is validated against two field experiments where the airborne concentration and the deposition rate of maize pollen (Zea mays) were measured downwind from source plots. We also compare the outputs of Aquilon with those of a Lagrangian model previously tested against the same dataset. Generally speaking the model performs well, with a similar accuracy to the Lagrangian model. However, both models underestimate the measured maximum in ground pollen deposition just downwind from the maize plot. It is shown that this discrepancy may be due to an underestimation of the pollen settling velocity in this region. As the Stokes number, defined as the ratio between the maize pollen response time and the characteristic time of the turbulent structures at dissipation-range scale, is about 1 in the wake region behind the source plot, it is likely that turbulence leads to an increase in the apparent settling velocity there. A 2.2 m piston core from the main basin of Lake Tekapo comprises millimeter-centimetre-scale alternations of light and dark laminae. Two much thicker layers occur near the base of the core and are interpreted as major slump deposits. Light laminae are predominantly fine silts with low microfossil concentrations. Dark laminae have higher clay, mica, and microfossil content and higher planktic/benthic diatom ratios. These findings are consistent with light laminae being deposited during times of high river flow and high sediment input, the thickness and number forming a proxy for paleoclimate (rainfall, water inflow, and erosion rates), and the dark laminae being deposited by settling out of the water column during periods of low inflow. The distribution of pollen from plants introduced to New Zealand by Europeans, and the inconsistency of dominant pollen types between samples, suggests that the entire sequence is only c. 100 yr old and that couplets of light and dark laminae form more frequently than annually. With appropriate processing, diatoms, spores, and pollen are present in great enough numbers in the dark laminae to be used for paleoclimate reconstruction. Diatoms are predominantly planktic lacustrine forms with some benthic forms sourced from the lake margins. Pollen and spores are derived from local grasslands, montane forest, fell fields, and tussock lands, and from West Coast lowland forest. Palynomorphs are carried over the central Southern Alps by prevailing northwesterly winds, and are deposited in the lake. The presence of fresh-looking Casuarina and possibly Banksia and Eucalyptus pollen shows that it is likely that some pollen came from Australia. It is believed that the presence and abundance of West Coast derived pollen, particularly Dacrydium cupressinum, and to a lesser extent Ascarina lucida, Nothofagus, and Podocarpus/Prumnopitys species, could be used as a proxy for the intensity and persistence of northwesterly winds. Establishment of polyploid individuals within diploid populations is theoretically unlikely unless polyploids are reproductively isolated, pre-zygotically, through assortative pollination. Here, we quantify the contribution of pollinator diversity and foraging behaviour to assortative pollen deposition in three mixed-ploidy populations of Chamerion angustifolium (Onagraceae). Diploids and tetraploids were not differentiated with respect to composition of insect visitors. However, foraging patterns of the three most common insect visitors (all bees) reinforced assortative pollination. Bees visited tetraploids disproportionately often and exhibited higher constancy on tetraploids in all three populations. In total, 73% of all bee flights were between flowers of the same ploidy (2 x–2 x, 4 x–4 x); 58% of all flights to diploids and 83% to tetraploids originated from diploid and tetraploid plants, respectively. Patterns of pollen deposition on stigmas mirrored pollinator foraging behaviour; 73% of all pollen on stigmas (70 and 75% of pollen on diploid and tetraploid stigmas, respectively) came from within-ploidy pollinations. These results indicate that pollinators contribute to high rates of pre-zygotic reproductive isolation. Abstract: Mechanisms of pollen transport in the humid tropics region of northeastern Australia were investigated to support the interpretation of a long Quaternary pollen record from ODP Site 820 located on the adjacent continental slope. Pollen analysis of surface sediment samples from the channels of two major river catchments demonstrated internal consistency in pollen spectra and little fluvial pollen sorting in relation to sediment variation. Differences in modern pollen spectra between catchments reflect existing variation in vegetation cover that, in turn, reflects climatic differences between catchments. Recent pollen spectra from top samples of the ODP core have sufficient in common with the riverine samples to suggest that the rivers are contributing a major pollen component to the offshore sediments, but these have been size sorted by marine action. Recent pollen samples from core tops taken from the Grafton Passage on the continental shelf that was thought to be the major passage for pollen transport to ODP Site 820 show significant differences to both riverine and ODP samples and suggest that pollen are dispersed across the continental shelf and through the outer Great Barrier Reef system in a more complex way than anticipated. Lecocarpus pinnatifidusis an endemic member of the Asteraceae occurring on only one island in the Galápagos archipelago. The capitula are large with female ray florets and male disc florets. They are self-compatible but this study suggests fruit set is pollen limited. Visits fromXylocopa darwiniand other larger insect pollinators are rare, and small insects seem to be the main pollinators. Small insects carry few pollen grains and most likely mediate self-pollinations. A detailed literature review is presented in order to explore the use of mosses as a source of modern pollen analogues. The method of collecting mosses varies in terms of the part of the moss sampled, the quantity of the sample and the species or growth form of the moss. The time period of pollen deposition that moss samples cover is debatable and of great interest. An analysis is made on the basis of empirical data consisting of single moss, bulk moss and modified Tauber trap samples from Hailuoto, Finland. These are compared to assess whether the pollen composition differs between the collecting media in terms of the proportions of individual pollen taxa, pollen accumulation (grains cm−2) and diversity (rarefaction estimates and evenness), and whether the time period covered by the moss sample can be delimited. Results indicate that; (1) Pinus pollen percentages are higher in the moss samples than in the trap, and that the percentages of Gramineae pollen are lower in the single moss samples than in the other two sample types; (2) pollen concentrations are on average 1/3 higher in the single moss samples than in the trap samples, which is interpreted as indicating that the moss samples represent more than 1 but less than 2 years of pollen deposition; (3) the rarefaction estimates of the number of taxa (E(T552)) are higher in the trap samples than in the moss samples, which may reflect differences in evenness. Abstract. 1. Visitation by the key pollinator, Bombus terrestris , was implicated in inducible flower colour change in Lupinus pilosus . Behaviour at the flower and rate of visitation by these bumble bees had specific effects; exclusion of this flower visitor led to retarded onset, and reduced rate, of colour change. 2. The foraging behaviour of B. terrestris was influenced by floral colour change in L. pilosus . Choice of pre-change flowers was greater than random in relation to the proportion of colour phases available within the plant population. 3. Levels of floral manipulation that mimicked the flower handling characteristics of visiting bumble bees confirmed that triggering of the pollen release mechanism is necessary for the instigation of colour change. 4. Moreover, this study suggests that, in L. pilosus , an aspect of pollination (pollen deposition by bees and/or subsequent pollen tube growth within the style) is linked with colour change and may act as the trigger for such change. A comparison between the aerobiological and floristic data carried out for Platanus are reported. The source was constituted by 60 Platanus trees. When they were pollinating we calculated the total pollen prodution of the source, controlling the number of male inflorescences for each plant, the number of anthers for each inflorescence and the number of pollen for each anther. Aerobiological data were obtained with 16 Durham gravimetric samplers positioned over an area of approximately 25 km2 at variable distances and in different directions to capture pollen transported by winds coming from any direction. In the first year of analysis, we carried out two kind of aerobiological monitoring positioning a Hirst volumetric trap near the closest gravimetric sampler. The two methods showed a similar trend in Platanus pollen profiles. In the following years, only Durham gravimetric samplers were used to study pollen dispersion. The data showed that there were high concentrations of pollen on the soil near the source while at distances higher than 800 m pollen concentration decreased dramatically. About 1/4 of all the pollen produced fell in an area within 400 m from the source and at a distance of 2750 m only 9 pollen grains/cm2 fell throughout the entire season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractPollen presentation theory (PPT) allows for a re-examination of some classic themes in pollination biology. Here, we outline its implications in the context of bee- and bird-adapted species of Penstemon and Keckiella (Scrophulariaceae). PPT models the optimal schedule of pollen presentation, based on the frequency of visits by pollinators, and the capacities of those pollinators to remove and deposit pollen. High visitation rates, high removal and low deposition all favor plants that present pollen in many small doses. Dosing is achieved through gradual opening of anthers and through anthers opening only narrowly. We hypothesize that bees have higher rates of removal and lower rates of deposition than birds; therefore, bee-pollinated species should have anthers that open more gradually and less completely than bird-pollinated species. Before presenting preliminary results that affirm this prediction, we critically discuss the characterization of species by pollination syndrome. PPT sheds new light on why plants may specialize on particular pollinators. Stebbins’ most effective pollinator can be recast as the pollinator that deposits more of the pollen that it removes, thereby making other visitors into conditional parasites. Pollinator shifts might occur when a pollinator with low removal and high deposition becomes abundant; the plants would then be selected to discourage their previous pollinators who are now parasites. Bird-pollination may favor anthers that open quickly and widely, thereby making bees wasteful parasites. Bee-pollination may favor anthers that open slowly and narrowly, thereby making birds ineffective pollinators. In paired comparisons of closely related species, the hummingbird-visited species were redder, had narrower or longer floral tubes, more exserted anthers and stigmas, less pronounced landing platforms, more inclined orientation, produced more nectar of a lower concentration, and had anthers that dehisce faster and more extensively. Grass pollen allergy is widespread all around the globe. With an increasing number of people living in cities, the examination of grass pollen levels within cities and their surroundings has increased in importance. The aim of this study was to examine different temporal and spatial scales of grass pollen concentration and deposition across urban and semi-rural environments in the years 2019 and 2020. We installed different types of pollen traps in the city of Ingolstadt (Bavaria, Germany) and its surroundings: volumetric pollen traps at roof level to assess background pollen concentration and gravimetric pollen traps and portable volumetric traps at street level. We considered grass pollen concentration and deposition in the context of land use and management. Our data showed that the grass pollen season in 2020 was longer and more intense than in 2019. Background grass pollen concentration was generally higher at the semi-rural site in both years: peak values were eight times (2019) and more than four times (2020) higher, and Seasonal Pollen Index was more than four times and almost three times higher in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Analyses of spatial variations measured at street level revealed higher numbers for pollen deposition and concentrations at semi-rural than at urban sites. Recorded values were linked to local vegetation and the management of grass areas surrounding the traps. Analyses of diurnal variations at street level in June 2019 showed that pollen concentration for all sites, independent of their degree of urbanization, were highest at noon (22.2 pollen grains/m³ vs. 8.5 pollen grains/m³ in the morning and 10.4 pollen grains/m³ in the evening). Diurnal variations at roof level showed similarities for the same days but differed when considering the whole season. 1. We investigated the phenology of the male and female sexual functions in flowers of Oil-seed Rape (Brassica napus) that were exposed to pollinators in an experimental garden. The female ‘residual sex function’ (RSF) of flowers was measured by hand-pollinating with genetically marked pollen in order to determine the proportion of ovules that remained available for fertilization by incoming pollen. Male RSF was measured by estimating the proportion of pollen grains that remained in dehiscing anthers. 2. Following flower opening, an average flower’s male and female sexual functions each required for completion c. 13 h of exposure to pollinators. One hour after opening, c. 50% of a flower’s ovules were unavailable to incoming pollen whereas only c. 10% of pollen was removed. Therefore, a flower’s sexual function was predominantly female for the first hour and predominantly male thereafter. 3. We found a fairly close correspondence between the proportion of the stigma covered with pollen and the depletion of female RSF. 4. On average, floral senescence occurred after c. 14·5 h of exposure to pollinators. Our observations are fairly consistent with a simple, economic model of optimal senescence time because the flowers remained open for approximately the same length of time as was necessary for the completion of their sexual functions. 5. A flower’s senescence was hastened when pollen was removed from the anthers, but not when pollen was deposited on the stigma. 6. When flowers were either left undisturbed or hand-pollinated, senescence occurred after c. 24 h. Pollen removal caused senescence after c. 13 h, which also approximated the longevity of flowers in the experimental garden. Aspects of the flowering biology of wilds cashew Anacardium occidentale, an andromonoecious, self-fertile tree, were studied in the north-east of Brazil, where this species is endemic. Comparison was made among two bee species, Apis mellifera and Centris tarsata, in their pollination of cashew flowers using a number of measures including single bee visits to marked flowers. Cashew flowering is protandrous within in day. Male flowers greatly outnumber hermaphrodite flowers remain intact for several days. Only females of C. tarsata collected pollen from cashew flowers, and then only from male flowers. The similar foraging behaviour of the nectar collectors of the two bee species under investigation when visiting hermaphrodite cashew flowers suggests that they may both act as good pollinators. We develop an index of efficiency of pollen removal from anthers (PREi) whereby the relative benefits of flower visitors to a component of a plantߣs male reproductive success can be quantified. Comparisons of single bee visits to flowers with unvisited flowers and others receiving unlimited visits were used to show that: C. tarsata pollen collectors were more efficient than nectar collectors of either bee species at removing pollen from anthers; nectar collectors of both bee species had similar pollen removal efficiencies; C. tarsata was more efficient at depositing pollen on stigmas that A. mellifera; both bee species had statistically similar efficiencies at setting seed. The indices of efficiency for some of the stages in the pollination of cashew suggest that C. tarsata flower visits may enhance plant reproductive success over flower visits by A. mellifera but that both bee species may be suitable for the pollination of commercially grown cashew. Despite cashewߣs single ovule per flower, high nut set demands a high rate of pollinator visitation during the peak time of stigma receptivity. The early vegetation history of the island Hailuoto, Finland, was investigated by means of pollen analysis. Pollen diagrams from three shallow peat profiles close to the postulated A.D. 1150 shoreline are interpreted with reference to modern pollen rain values, features indicative of occupation, routeways and cultivation being delimited. The differing settlement histories of the western and eastern parts of the present farmed area are distinguished and explained in terms of the changing coastline and availability of cultivable land. The historical evidence for changes in forest and farming conditions since the 16th century is also compared with the pollen evidence for the same period.
