To describe the medium-term ophthalmological findings in patients recovering from COVID-19. Patients recovered from the acute phase of COVID-19 underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation, including presenting and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refractometry, biomicroscopy, tonometry, break-up time and Schirmer tests, indirect ophthalmoscopy, color fundus picture, and retinal architecture evaluation using optical coherence tomography. Socio-demographic data and personal medical history were also collected. According to the severity of systemic manifestations, patients were classified into mild-to-moderate, severe, and critical. Sixty-four patients (128 eyes) were evaluated 82 ± 36.4 days after the onset of COVID's symptoms. The mean ± SD duration of hospitalization was 15.0 ± 10.7 days. Seven patients (10.9%) had mild-to-moderate, 33 (51.5%) severe, and 24 (37.5%) critical disease. Median [interquartile ranges (IQR)] presenting visual acuity was 0.1 (0–0.2) and BCVA 0 (0–0.1). Anterior segment biomicroscopy was unremarkable, except for dry eye disease, verified in 10.9% of them. The mean ± SD intraocular pressure (IOP) in critical group (14.16 ± 1.88 mmHg) was significantly higher than in severe group (12.51 ± 2.40 mmHg), both in the right (p 0.02) and left eyes (p 0.038). Among all, 15.6% had diabetic retinopathy, and two patients presented with discrete white-yellowish dots in the posterior pole, leading to hyporreflective changes at retinal pigment epithelium level, outer segment, and ellipsoid layers. The present study identified higher IOP among critical cases, when compared to severe cases, and discrete outer retina changes 80 days after COVID-19 infection. No sign of uveitis was found. Refractometry is utilized routinely to evaluate canine urine specific gravity (USG) in veterinary clinical settings. We aimed to determine if the magnitude of interobserver reliability when assessing canine USG via refractometry could impact clinical judgment. USG was determined in 38 dogs by 3 registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) using both an optical analog refractometer and a digital refractometer. Summary statistics were reported, interobserver reliability was assessed via intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis through a 2-way mixed-effects model, and agreement between RVT pairs was compared through Bland–Altman plots. The median analog refractometer USG measurement was 1.018 (range: 1.004–1.040) and for the digital refractometer was 1.0176 (1.0035–1.0357). The analog refractometer average measure ICC was 0.995 (95% CI: 0.992, 0.997; p < 0.001). The digital refractometer average measure ICC was 0.999 (95% CI: 0.999, 1.000; p < 0.001). Strong agreement between all pairs of RVTs was seen via Bland–Altman plots for both analog and digital refractometers, with 95% CIs spanning no more than 0.002 in either the positive or negative direction for all pairings. We investigate a novel implementation of hyperbolic metamaterial (HM) at far-infrared frequencies composed of stacked graphene sheets separated by thin dielectric layers. Using the surface conductivity model of graphene, we derive the homogenization formula for the multilayer structure by treating graphene sheets as lumped layers with complex admittances. Homogenization results and limits are investigated by comparison with a transfer matrix formulation for the HM constituent layers. We show that infrared iso-frequency wavevector dispersion characteristics of the proposed HM can be tuned by varying the chemical potential of the graphene sheets via electrostatic biasing. Accordingly, reflection and transmission properties for a film made of graphene-dielectric multilayer are tunable at terahertz frequencies, and we investigate the limits in using the homogenized model compared to the more accurate transfer matrix model. We also propose to use graphene-based HM as a super absorber for near-fields generated at its surface. The power emitted by a dipole near the surface of a graphene-based HM is increased dramatically (up to 5 × 10(2) at 2 THz), furthermore we show that most of the scattered power is directed into the HM. The validity and limits of the homogenized HM model are assessed also for near-fields and show that in certain conditions it overestimates the dipole radiated power into the HM.

The dependences of the adsorption and refractometric parameters of a polymer composition containing Rhodamine B in the molecular state on the concentration of lead atoms are studied. These dependences are used as a basis of an express-method of determining the concentration of lead ions in water, the sensitivity of which is shown to be as high as 0.001 mg/L, which is below the maximum permissible concentration. The use of the water-insoluble dye as a material sensitive to lead ions shows the possibility of developing a stable sensor based on the effect under study. The use of the frustrated total internal reflection method for determining the lead concentration by the aforementioned optical parameters is considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An interference microscopy-based method for measuring the refractive index of microscopic objects is considered. It is shown that of special interest is the analysis of the dispersion of the refractive index of small objects of biological fluids, which can make it possible to separate fluctuations of the size and the refractive index of the object in studying living cells by methods of phase microscopy. A method for measuring the dispersion of the refractive index of microscopic volumes of fluids using the MIA-1D automated interference microscope and a measuring cell with a microwell is described. An algorithm for processing the obtained images with the aim of calculating the refractive index is presented. The measurement results for the dispersion of the refractive index of bovine serum albumin are given. It is shown that the proposed method allows one to measure the refractive index of fluids in microscopic volumes up to four or five decimal places. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The water-soluble polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is an established ingredient in pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP) formulations. Due to its high usage and lack of biodegradability, it has been detected up to 7.0 mg L -1 in wastewater and 0.1 mg L -1 in the receiving freshwaters, with several studies showing detrimental sublethal effects in a range of aquatic species. A lack of simple analytical methods to detect and quantify PVP currently impacts further investigation into the cause of these sublethal effects. In this paper we propose a refractive index gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) method to quantify PVP, which includes the processing of raw chromatograms using line deconvolution to calculate peak area. The method was then applied to Daphnia magna exposed to PVP for 48 h. A limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.05 and 0.2 mg mL -1 respectively was determined, with a recovery of 78 % from spiked Daphnia magna. PVP was detected in the samples above the LOD but below the LOQ. In the detection of biomolecules, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors require high sensitivity. In this study, we propose a sensitivity-enhanced functionalized plasmonic interface based on Ag-TiO 2 -Co(OH) 2 nanosheets structure. Compared to unmodified SPR sensors, the sensitivity of the sensor decorated with TiO 2 and Co(OH) 2 nanosheets is increased by 130.84%, reaching 5764.27 nm/RIU. This enhancement is attributed to the high refractive index of the coating, as well as the high specific surface area and abundant active sites provided by the synthesized Co(OH) 2 nanosheets with a multi-grooved structure. Additionally, employing a double-antibody sandwich method, the antibody-functionalized plasmonic interface enables specific detection of human serum albumin (HSA). The linear response of this sensor was in the wide range of 0.4-150 μM, and the LOD reached 154.89 nM(K D is approximately 1.73 × 10 -6  M). Objectives: To examine the polymerization shrinkage of different resin-based composite (RBC) restorations using optical coherence tomography (OCT) image-based digital image correlation (DIC) analysis., Methods: The refractive index (RI) of three RBCs, Filtek Z350XT (Z350), Z350Flowable (Z350F), and BulkFill Posterior (Bulkfill), was measured before and after polymerization to calibrate their axial dimensions under OCT. Class I cavities were prepared in bovine incisors and individually filled with these RBCs under nonbonded and bonded conditions. A series of OCT images of these restorations were captured during 20-s light polymerization and then input into DIC software to analyze their shrinkage behaviors. The interfacial adaptation was also examined using these OCT images., Results: The RI of the three composites ranged from 1.52 to 1.53, and photopolymerization caused neglectable increases in the RI values. For nonbonded restorations, Z350F showed maximal vertical displacements on the top surfaces (-16.75 µm), followed by Bulkfill (-8.81 µm) and Z350 (-5.97 µm). In their bonded conditions, all showed increased displacements. High variations were observed in displacement measurements on the bottom surfaces. In the temporal analysis, the shrinkage of nonbonded Z350F and Bulkfill decelerated after 6-10 s. However, Z350 showed a rebounding upward displacement after 8.2 s. Significant interfacial gaps were found in nonbonded Z350 and Z350F restorations., Significance: The novel OCT image-based DIC analysis provided a comprehensive examination of the shrinkage behaviors and debonding of the composite restorations throughout the polymerization process. The flowable composite showed the highest shrinkage displacements. Surface plasmon (SP) excitation in metal-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) has been a focal point for highly sensitive surface biosensing. Previous efforts focused on uniform metal layer deposition around the TFBG cross section and temperature self-compensation with the Bragg mode, requiring both careful control of the core-guided light polarization and interrogation over most of the C + L bands. To circumvent these two important practical limitations, we studied and developed an original platform based on partially coated TFBGs. The partial metal layer enables the generation of dual-comb resonances, encompassing highly sensitive (TM/EH mode families) and highly insensitive (TE/HE mode families) components in unpolarized transmission spectra. The interleaved comb of insensitive modes acts as wavelength and power references within the same spectral region as the SP-active modes. Despite reduced fabrication and measurement complexity, refractometric accuracy is not compromised through statistical averaging over seven individual resonances within a narrowband window of 10 nm. Consequently, measuring spectra over 60 nm is no longer needed to compensate for small temperature or power fluctuations. This sensing platform brings the following important practical assets: (1) a simpler fabrication process, (2) no need for polarization control, (3) limited bandwidth interrogation, and (4) maintained refractometric accuracy, which makes it a true game changer in the ever-growing plasmonic sensing domain.

Plasmonic metamaterials have opened new avenues in medical diagnostics. However, the transfer of the technology to the markets has been delayed due to multiple challenges. The need of bulky optics for signal reading from nanostructures patterned on submillimeter area limits the miniaturization of the devices. The use of objective-free optics can solve this problem, which necessitates large area patterning of the nanostructures. In this work, we utilize laser interference lithography (LIL) to pattern nanodisc-shaped metamaterial absorber nanoantennas over a large area (4 cm 2 ) within minutes. The introduction of a sacrificial layer during the fabrication process enables an inverted hole profile and a well-controlled liftoff, which ensures perfectly defined uniform nanopatterning almost with no defects. Furthermore, we use a macroscopic reflection probe for optical characterization in the near-IR, including the detection of the binding kinematics of immunologically relevant proteins. We show that the photonic quality of the plasmonic nanoantennas commensurates with electron-beam-lithography-fabricated ones over the whole area. The refractive index sensitivity of the LIL-fabricated metasurface is determined as 685 nm per refractive index unit, which demonstrates ultrasensitive detection. Moreover, the fabricated surfaces can be used multiple times for biosensing without losing their optical quality. The combination of rapid and large area nanofabrication with a simple optical reading not only simplifies the detection process but also makes the biosensors more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Therefore, the improvements provided in this work will empower researchers and industries for accurate and real-time analysis of biological systems.

In this study, we report the successful development of a novel high-sensitivity intensity-based Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) biosensor and its application for detecting molecular interactions. By optimizing the excitation wavelength and employing a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) algorithm, the system can determine the optimal excitation wavelength based on the initial refractive index of the sample without adjusting the incidence angle. The experimental results demonstrate that the refractive index resolution of the system reaches 1.77×10-6 RIU. Moreover, it can obtain the optimal excitation wavelength for samples with an initial refractive index in the range of 1.333 to 1.370 RIU and accurately monitor variations within the range of 0.0037 RIU without adjusting the incidence angle. Additionally, our new SPRi technique realized real-time detection of high-throughput biomolecular binding processes, enabling analysis of kinetic parameters. This research is expected to advance the development of more accurate SPRi technologies for molecular interaction analysis.

Quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) can effectively enhance the interaction of terahertz (THz) wave with matter due to the tunable high-Q property, which has a strong potential application in the detection of low-concentration biological samples in the THz band. In this paper, a novel THz metamaterial sensor with a double-chain-separated resonant cavity structure based on QBIC is designed and fabricated. The process of excitation of the QBIC mode is verified and the structural parameters are optimized after considering the ohmic loss by simulations. The simulated refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is up to 544 GHz/RIU, much higher than those of recently reported THz metamaterial sensors. The sensitivity of the proposed metamaterial sensor is confirmed in an experiment by detecting low-concentration lithium citrate (LC) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions. The limits of detection (LoDs) are obtained to be 0.0025 mg/mL (12 μM) for LC and 0.03125 mg/mL (0.47 μM) for BSA, respectively, both of which excel over most of the reported results in previous studies. These results indicate that the proposed THz metamaterial sensor has excellent sensing performances and can well be applied to the detection of low-concentration biological samples.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based digital image correlation (DIC) analysis and to identify the experimental parameters for measurements of polymerization shrinkage., Methods: Class I cavities were prepared on bovine incisors and filled with Filtek Z350XT Flowable (Z350F). One OCT image of the polymerized restoration was processed to generate virtually displaced images. In addition, the tooth specimen was physically moved under OCT scanning. A DIC software analyzed these virtual and physical transformation sets and assessed the effects of subset sizes on accuracy. The refractive index of unpolymerized and polymerized Z350F was measured via OCT images. Finally, different particles (70-80 µm glass beads, 150-212 µm glass beads, and 75-150 µm zirconia powder) were added to Z350F to inspect the analyzing quality., Results: The analyses revealed a high correlation (>99.99%) for virtual movements within 131 pixels (639 µm) and low errors (<5.21%) within a 10-µm physical movement. A subset size of 51 × 51 pixels demonstrated the convergence of correlation coefficients and calculation time. The refractive index of Z350F did not change significantly after polymerization. Adding glass beads or zirconia particles caused light reflection or shielding in OCT images, whereas blank Z350F produced the best DIC analysis results., Significance: The OCT-based DIC analysis with the experimental conditions is feasible in measuring polymerization shrinkage of RBC restorations. The subset size in the DIC analysis should be identified to optimize the analysis conditions and results. Emulsion droplets on the colloidal length scale are a model system of frictionless compliant spheres. Direct imaging studies of the microscopic structure and dynamics of emulsions offer valuable insights into fundamental processes, such as gelation, jamming, and self-assembly. A microscope, however, can only resolve the individual droplets in a densely packed emulsion if the droplets are closely index-matched to their fluid medium. Mitigating perturbations due to gravity additionally requires the droplets to be density-matched to the medium. Creating droplets that are simultaneously index-matched and density-matched has been a long-standing challenge for the soft-matter community. The present study introduces a method for synthesizing monodisperse micrometer-sized siloxane droplets whose density and refractive index can be precisely and independently tuned by adjusting the volume fraction of three silane precursors. A systematic optimization protocol yields fluorescently labeled ternary droplets whose densities and refractive indexes match, to the fourth decimal place, those of aqueous solutions of glycerol or dimethylsiloxane. Because all of the materials in this system are biocompatible, we functionalize the droplets with DNA strands to endow them with programmed inter-droplet interactions. Confocal microscopy then reveals both the three-dimensional structure and the network of droplet-droplet contacts in a class of self-assembled droplet gels, free from gravitational effects. This experimental toolbox creates opportunities for studying the microscopic mechanisms that govern viscoelastic properties and self-assembly in soft materials.

In this work, a common-path optical coherence tomography (OCT) system is demonstrated for characterizing the tissue in terms of some optical properties. A negative axicon structure chemically etched inside the fiber tip is employed as optical probe in the OCT. This probe generates a quality Bessel beam owning a large depth-of-field, ∼700 µm and small central spot size, ∼3 µm. The OCT system is probing the sample without using any microscopic lens. For experimental validation, the OCT imaging of chicken tissue has been obtained along with estimation of its refractive index and optical attenuation coefficient. Afterwards, the cancerous tissue is differentiated from the normal tissue based on the OCT imaging, refractive index, and optical attenuation coefficient. The respective tissue samples are collected from the human liver and pancreas. This probe could be a useful tool for endoscopic or minimal-invasive inspection of malignancy inside the tissue either at early-stage or during surgery.

Building on the Fano resonance observation, a new refractive index transducer structure at the nanoscale is proposed in this article, which is a refractive index transducer consisting of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure coupled with a ring cavity internally connected to an h-shaped structure (RCIhS). Using an analytical method based on COMSOL software and finite element method (FEM), the effect of different geometric parameters of the structure on the trans-mission characteristics of the system is simulated and analyzed, which in turn illustrates the effect of the structural parameters on the output Fano curves. As simulation results show, the internally connected h-shaped structure is an influential component in the Fano resonance. By optimizing the geometrical parameters of the structure, the system finally accomplishes a sensitivity (S) of 2400 nm/RIU and a figure of merit (FOM) of 68.57. Indolamines (e.g., serotonin and melatonin) are tryptophan-derived class of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators that play crucial roles in mood regulation, sleep-wake cycles, and gastrointestinal functions. These biogenic amines exert their effects by binding to specific receptors in the central nervous system, influencing neuronal activity and signalling cascades. Indolamines are vital in maintaining homeostasis, and imbalances in their levels have been implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Hence, in the present study, we have investigated the nonlinear properties of indolamines under a continuous wave (CW) and pulsed laser excitation using the closed-aperture (CA) Z-scan technique. The CA Z-scan is a cost-effective and sensitive analytical tool for investigating nonlinear properties. It is observed that indolamines show negative refractive and positive absorptive nonlinearity under in vitro physiological conditions. The origin of nonlinearity is ascribed to the thermo-optical effect governed by the saturated atomic absorption and molecular orientation mechanisms under CW and pulsed laser excitation, respectively. The strength of nonlinearity is found to vary linearly with the concentration of indolamines. Overall, serotonin possesses stronger nonlinearity than melatonin. The maximum nonlinearity (refractive index (n 2 ) & absorption coefficient (β)) for melatonin under CW and pulsed laser excitations are (-1.266 × 10 -12 m 2 W -1 and -1.883 × 10 -17 m 2 W -1 ) & (8.046 × 10 -8  mW -1 and 1.516 × 10 -13  mW -1 ), respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum n 2 and β under pulsed laser excitation for serotonin are obtained as -3.195 × 10 -17 m 2 W -1 and 6.149 × 10 -12  mW -1 , respectively. Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots have many potential optical applications, including quantum dot light-emitting diodes, single-photon sources, or biological luminescent markers. The optical properties of colloidal quantum dots can be affected by their dielectric environment. This study investigated the photoluminescence (PL) decay of thick-shell gradient-alloyed colloidal semiconductor quantum dots as a function of solvent refractive index. These measurements were conducted in a wide range of delay times to account for both the initial spontaneous decay of excitons and the delayed emission of excitons that has the form of a power law. It is shown that whereas the initial spontaneous PL decay is very sensitive to the refractive index of the solvent, the power-law delayed emission of excitons is not. Our results seem to exclude the possibility of carrier self-trapping in the considered solvents and suggest the existence of trap states inside the quantum dots. Finally, our data show that the average exciton lifetime significantly decreases as a function of the solvent refractive index. Morphological and physico-chemical properties of erythrocytes encapsulated by terpenoindol alkaloids (TIA) by nephelometry and osmotic resistance of erythrocytes in a medium with low concentrations of sodium chloride have been studied. Changes in the morphological and physico-chemical parameters of TIA-loaded erythrocyte carriers and freshly isolated erythrocytes have been studied. It was found that during the process of encapsulation of TIA by a modified hypotonic swelling method, the morphological and physicochemical parameters of erythrocytes change insignificantly in comparison with the control.

The study focused on the production of wine from date palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.) using a strain of yeast isolated from selected Nigerian locally fermented beverages ('pito', 'brukutu' and palm wine). Seven (7) distinct yeasts were isolated and identified using cultural, microscopy and biochemical tests (temperature tolerance, flocculation, ethanol tolerance, H2S production and killer toxin production and the ability to assimilate and ferment sugars. The yeast isolates were screened using refractometric and spectrophotometric methods to select the isolate with the best ability for wine production. This isolate was molecularly characterized, grown in 1 L of potatoes dextrose broth, freeze dried and used for wine production. The population of yeast, bacteria and the physicochemical analysis of the must were monitored during fermentation. Populations of bacteria in the wine were assessed by standard pour plate count. The proximate content and physicochemical properties of the produced wine before and after ageing, as well as the sensorial quality of the produced wine was determined. All the yeast isolates possessed the ability to flocculate, tolerate ethanol concentration of between 5 and 20% and temperature range of 30–45 °C, produced low concentration of H2S and does not produce killer toxins. A palm wine isolate, identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae X01 was selected as the best isolate with the most ability for wine production. The total yeast count increases as the period of fermentation progressed while the total viable bacterial count reduced as the fermentation period progressed. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the physicochemical properties of the must during fermentation. At the end of the fermentation, the produced wine had 5.22% and 4.86% ethanol content for S. cerevisiae QA23 and S. cerevisiae X01 respectively. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the proximate and physicochemical compositions of the produced wine before and after ageing using Saccharomyces cerevisiae X01 when compared to the control S. cerevisiae QA23. This study revealed that the Nigerian locally sourced S. cerevisiae X01 can be used as an alternative substrate for industrial scale production of wine with a mild alcoholic content. Objectives: This study was designed to assess the accuracy of photorefraction and wavefront-based autorefraction in children under 3 years of age. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with children who had no ocular abnormalities other than a refractive error and were less than 3 years old. Spot Vision Screener (Welch Allyn Inc., Skaneateles Falls, NY, USA) was used for photorefraction and SureSight Vision Screener (Welch Allyn, Skaneateles Falls, NY) was used for autorefraction. The measurements were performed with both devices before and after cycloplegia. The results were compared with those obtained using cycloplegic retinoscopy. The assessments were performed in terms of spherical equivalent (SE) values and Jackson cross-cylinder power values (J0 and J45). Results: A total of 305 children with a mean age of 15.1±10.4 months were included. The mean SE values measured with the Spot Vision and SureSight before cycloplegia were 0.43±0.75 D and 0.90±0.86 D, respectively. Following cycloplegia, the mean SE values were 1.80±1.25 D and 1.55±1.40 D, respectively. The mean SE value obtained with cycloplegic retinoscopy was 1.53±1.34 D. The mean SE values measured with both devices prior to cycloplegia were significantly lower than that measured with cycloplegic retinoscopy (p<0.001). No significant difference was observed between the cycloplegic SE values obtained with SureSight and retinoscopy (p=0.66). Spot Vision yielded significantly higher cycloplegic SE values compared with cycloplegic retinoscopy (p<0.001). Conclusion: Both devices underestimated SE values in comparison with cycloplegic retinoscopy in children under 3 years of age. Wavefront-based autorefraction performed with cycloplegia may be an alternative to cycloplegic retinoscopy, but needs confirmation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The separation of carbohydrate diastereomers by an ideal size-exclusion mechanism, i.e., in the absence of enthalpic contributions to the separation, can be considered one of the grand challenges in chromatography: Can a difference in the location of a single axial hydroxy group on a pyranose ring (e.g., the axial OH being located on carbon 2 versus on carbon 4 of the ring) sufficiently affect the solution conformational entropy of a monosaccharide in a manner which allows for members of a diastereomeric pair to be separated from each other by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC)? Previous attempts at answering this question, for aqueous solutions, have been thwarted by the mutarotation of sugars in water. Here, the matter is addressed by employing the non-mutarotating methyl-α-pyranosides of d-mannose and d-galactose. We show for the first time, using SEC columns, the entropically driven separation of members of this diastereomeric pair, at a resolution of 1.2–1.3 and with only a 0.4–1% change in solute distribution coefficient over a 25 °C range, thereby demonstrating the ideality of the separation. It is also shown how the newest generation of online viscometer allows for improved sensitivity, thereby extending the range of this so-called molar-mass-sensitive detector into the monomeric regime. Detector multidimensionality is showcased via the synergism of online viscometry and refractometry, which combine to measure the intrinsic viscosity and viscometric radius of the sugars continually across the elution profiles of each diastereomer, methyl-α-d-mannopyranoside and methyl-α-d-galactopyranoside. Besides water, raw methanol produced from steel mill gases within the Carbon2Chem® project contains dissolved carbon dioxide. Refractometry and densimetry were investigated as analysis methods to analyze raw methanol samples quickly and reliably. To verify existing calibration curves, a set of standard solutions from pure chemicals was produced. Experimental results differed significantly from published refractive index data, especially in the range of high methanol weight fractions, which are of particular interest for the Carbon2Chem® project. We present a refractometric sensor realized as a stack of metallic gratings with subwavelength features and embedded within a low-index dielectric medium. Light is strongly confined through funneling mechanisms and excites resonances that sense the analyte medium. Two terminations of the structure are compared. One of them has a dielectric medium in contact with the analyte and exploits the selective spectral transmission of the structure. The other design has a metallic continuous layer that generates surface plasmon resonances at the metal/analyte interface. Both designs respond with narrow spectral features that are sensible to the change in the refractive index of the analyte and can be used for sensing biomedical samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct optical detection has proven to be a highly interesting tool in biomolecular interaction analysis to be used in drug discovery, ligand/receptor interactions, environmental analysis, clinical diagnostics, screening of large data volumes in immunology, cancer therapy, or personalized medicine. In this review, the fundamental optical principles and applications are reviewed. Devices are based on concepts such as refractometry, evanescent field, waveguides modes, reflectometry, resonance and/or interference. They are realized in ring resonators; prism couplers; surface plasmon resonance; resonant mirror; Bragg grating; grating couplers; photonic crystals, Mach-Zehnder, Young, Hartman interferometers; backscattering; ellipsometry; or reflectance interferometry. The physical theories of various optical principles have already been reviewed in detail elsewhere and are therefore only cited. This review provides an overall survey on the application of these methods in direct optical biosensing. The "historical" development of the main principles is given to understand the various, and sometimes only slightly modified variations published as "new" methods or the use of a new acronym and commercialization by different companies. Improvement of optics is only one way to increase the quality of biosensors. Additional essential aspects are the surface modification of transducers, immobilization strategies, selection of recognition elements, the influence of non-specific interaction, selectivity, and sensitivity. Furthermore, papers use for reporting minimal amounts of detectable analyte terms such as value of mass, moles, grams, or mol/L which are difficult to compare. Both these essential aspects (i.e., biochemistry and the presentation of LOD values) can be discussed only in brief (but references are provided) in order to prevent the paper from becoming too long. Perovskite solar cells are currently considered a promising technology for solar energy harvesting. Their capability to deliver an electrical signal when illuminated can sense changes in environmental parameters. We have numerically analyzed the variation of the current delivered by a perovskite cell as a function of the index of refraction of air, that is in contact with the front surface of the cell. This calculation identifies which geometrical and material structures enhance this behavior. After replacing the top transparent electrode of a solar cell by an optimized subwavelength metallic grating, we find a large variation in the responsivity of the cell with respect to the change in the index of refraction of the surrounding medium. Such a refractometric sensor can be interrogated electronically, avoiding the cumbersome set-ups of spectral or angular interrogation methods. We present an adaptation of the performance parameters of refractometric sensors (sensitivity and figure of merit) to the case of opto-electronic interrogation methods. Nanofluidics which integrates analytical systems in 101–103 nm space provides ultra-sensitive analyses at a single-cell and single-molecule level. One of the key technologies for nanofluidics is the ultra-sensitive detection method; however, the ultra-small volume at aL–fL scale makes it challenging. Recently, we have developed a non-fluorescent molecule detection method for nanofluidics called photo-thermal optical diffraction (POD) which utilizes the photo-thermal effect of target molecules and optical diffraction by a single nanochannel. To improve the performance of such diffraction-based detection methods, the design and optimization of optical diffraction are essential. However, it is unknown whether the optical diffraction by a single nanochannel follows general diffraction theory because liquid properties change in the ultra-small space. In this study, we elucidated optical diffraction by a single nanochannel from theoretical calculations and experiments. Our experiments revealed the effect of channel size, channel position, and solvents in the nanochannel, which showed good agreement with proposed theoretical calculations. We also revealed no or little change of refractive index of water in the nanochannel compared with that in the bulk. Finally, we confirmed that the POD signal was proportional to the diffracted light intensity, and the calculated limit of detection of POD was 7.0 × 10–7 RIU in a detection volume of 0.23 fL. Our theoretical calculations and experimental results can be widely applied to the design and optimization of detection methods using optical diffraction by nanochannels and nanostructures. Background: Pterigiym is a proliferative, degenerative and inflammatory disease developing due to pathological hyperplasia, vascularization of the epithelium and migration of abnormal limbal stem cells to the central cornea, and accompanied by profound changes in the structure of underlying tissue. Purpose: To assess the influence of persistently recurring pterygium on the optical interface of the cornea using refractometry and corneal topography. Material and Methods: Sixty patients (67 eyes) with persistently recurring pterygium were included in this study. Patients were divided in four groups based on the number of recurrences. They underwent visual acuity assessment, refractometry and computerized corneal topography to assess the optical interface of the cornea. Results: We found significant differences in visual acuity, refractive errors and corneal topography indices among patients with persistently recurring pterygium with various numbers of recurrences. Our case follow-up demonstrated that permanent changes in the optical interface of the cornea developed with an increase in recurrences and persistence of growth of wing-shaped conjunctiva onto the cornea; these changes manifested as residual corneal astigmatism. Conclusion: An increase in pterygium recurrences results in permanent impairments of the optic interface of the cornea; this requires developing advanced surgical techniques capable of preventing recurrence of pterygium. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an evolving noninvasive imaging modality that has been used to image the human larynx during surgical endoscopy. The design of a long gradient-index lens-based probe capable of capturing images of the human larynx by use of spectral domain OCT during a typical office-based laryngoscopy examination is presented. An optical-ballast-based 4f optical relay system is proposed to realize variable working distance with a constant optical delay. In-vivo OCT imaging of the human larynx is demonstrated. Office-based OCT is a promising imaging modality for early laryngeal cancer diagnosis.

To understand the influence of topographical variations in collagen fibril orientation of articular cartilage on optical phase images of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT), we use polarized light microscopy (PLM) to quantify the orientation and phase retardation of the collagen architecture in cartilage at the same locations imaged by PS-OCT. The PS-OCT experiments demonstrate that articular cartilage has normal variations in polarization sensitivity at different locations over an intact bovine tibial plateau. Articular cartilage is not polarization sensitive along the vertical axis on the medial edge and central areas of the joint surface, but becomes polarization sensitive on the lateral edge of the tibia. This difference in optical phase retardation, as demonstrated by PS-OCT, is verified by PLM to be caused by differences in collagen fibril orientation at different locations of the tibial plateau. This study demonstrates that normal topographical variations in the collagen architecture of articular cartilage within a joint have a profound influence on the optical phase retardation detected by PS-OCT imaging, and therefore must be understood and mapped for specific joints before PS-OCT imaging can be used for the evaluation of the health status of individual joint surfaces.

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) images have been used to investigate the mechanism of optical clearing in flowing blood using dextrans. The depth reflectivity profiles from SDOCT indicate that dextrans become increasingly more effective in reducing scattering in flowing blood, except for 5 mgdl(-1) of Dx500, with increasing molecular weights (MW 70,000 and 500,000) and concentrations (0.6, 2, and 5 mgdl(-1)). Among the tested dextrans, Dx500 at 2 mgdl(-1) had the most significant effect on light scattering reduction with the strongest capability to induce erythrocyte aggregation. Dx500 at 5 mgdl(-1) contributes more refractive index matching but induces a decrease in aggregation that leads to the same level as 0.6 mgdl(-1) Dx500. Previous studies identified various mechanisms of light scattering reduction in stationary blood induced by optical clearing agents. Our results suggest that erythrocyte aggregation is a more important mechanism for optical clearing in flowing blood using dextrans, providing a rational design basis for effective flowing blood optical clearing, which is essential for improving OCT imaging capability through flowing blood.

Light scattering in biological tissues can be reduced by using optical clearing agents. Various physical methods in conjunction with agents have been studied to enhance the optical clearing efficacy of skin for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In this study, we propose a new physical method to enhance the optical clearing potential of topically applied glycerol. A microneedle roller is used to easily create numerous transdermal microchannels prior to glycerol application. The optical clearing efficacy of skin is quantitatively evaluated with the use of a modulation transfer function target placed underneath ex vivo porcine skin samples. From cross-polarized images acquired at various time points after glycerol application, we find that samples treated with the microneedle roller resulted in an approximately two-fold increase in contrast compared to control samples 30 min after glycerol application. In conclusion, our data suggest that the microneedle roller can be a good physical method to enhance transdermal delivery of optical clearing agents, and hence their optical clearing potential over large regions of skin.

Previously, we reported the design of a new diffusing probe that employs a standard two-layer diffusion model to recover the optical properties of turbid samples. This particular probe had a source-detector separation of 2.5 mm and performance was validated with Monte Carlo simulations and homogeneous phantom experiments. The goal of the current study is to characterize the performance of this new method in the context of two-layer phantoms that mimic the optical properties of human skin. We analyze the accuracy of the recovered top layer optical properties and their dependences on the thickness of the top layer of two-layer phantoms. Our results demonstrate that the optical properties of the top layer can be accurately determined with a 1.6 mm source-detector separation diffusing probe when this layer thickness is as thin as 1 mm. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate that the interrogation depth can be further decreased by shortening the source-detector separation.

In this work, the optical imaging based single particle analysis (SPA) and the gold standard shake-flask (SF) solubility methods are compared. We show that to analyze pharmaceutical compounds spanning 7 log units in solubility and a diverse chemical space with limited resources, several analytical techniques are required (HPLC-UV, LC-MS, refractometry and UV–Vis spectrometry), whereas solely the SPA method is able to analyze all the same compounds. SPA experiments take only minutes, while for SF, it may take days to reach thermodynamic equilibration. This decreases the time span needed for the solubility experiment from initial preparations to obtaining the result from roughly three days to less than three hours. The optimal particle size for SPA ranges from approximately one to hundreds of microns. Challenges include measuring large particles, very fast dissolving compounds and handling small sample sizes. Inherent exclusion of density from the SPA measurement is a potential source of error for compounds with very low or high density values. The average relative difference of 37 % between the two methods is very good in the realm of solubility, where 400 % interlaboratory reproducibility can be expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conductive polymers that exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity have garnered significant interests in recent decades, disclosing remarkable potentials across a broad range of industries. In this study we investigated a series of Norland UV-curable optical adhesive (NOA65) doped with ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluormethylsulfonyl)imide) at various concentrations from 0 wt% to 2.0 wt%. The refractive indices of the doped prepolymers and photopolymerized NOA65 were examined by Abbe refractometry with four wavelength filters at distinct temperatures. Moreover, the transmission spectra, frequency-dependent complex dielectric and conductivity properties of the composites were explored in comparison with their pristine precursor and photopolymer. Interestingly, by applying an alternating electric field within a specific frequency range, we found that these samples can undergo unique dielectric relaxation, and thus give rise to the observed heating effect. Our preliminary results demonstrate that the conductivity of the proposed polymer composites is significantly higher than that of the undoped counterpart, whereas the refractive index, dispersion, and transmission remain virtually unchanged, revealing great promise for real applications in optoelectronic technology. Background: The main drawbacks of zirconia are its high refractive index and opacity. This study aimed to assess the effect of sintering temperature on the translucency of Ivoclar e. max ZirCAD (IEZ), and White Peaks Symphony (WPS) zirconia blocks. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study, 30 IEZ and 30 WPS zirconia blocks measuring 10 mm × 10 mm × 1 mm were prepared and underwent sintering in three subgroups at 1440°C, 1500°C, and 1530°C. The specimens were then photographed against a black and a white background with a standard digital camera. The L*, a*, and b* color parameters were measured using Adobe Photoshop software, and translucency was calculated. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (P < 0.05). Results: In both the IEZ and WPS groups, the maximum and minimum translucency parameters were recorded in 1530°C and 1440°C subgroups, respectively. The difference in the mean translucency was significant among the three subgroups of each zirconia group (P < 0.001). The mean translucency of WPS zirconia was significantly higher than that of IEZ zirconia (P < 0.01), and maximum difference was noted at 1500°C sintering temperature. Conclusion: Increasing the sintering temperature from 1440°C to 1530°C can significantly increase the translucency of IEZ and WPS zirconia blocks, and can be considered to improve the quality of zirconia restorations.

The use of perturbation and differential Monte Carlo (pMC/dMC) methods in conjunction with nonlinear optimization algorithms were proposed recently as a means to solve inverse photon migration problems in regionwise heterogeneous turbid media. We demonstrate the application of pMC/dMC methods for the recovery of optical properties in a two-layer extended epithelial tissue model from experimental measurements of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance. The results demonstrate that pMC/dMC methods provide a rapid and accurate approach to solve two-region inverse photon migration problems in the transport regime, that is, on spatial scales smaller than a transport mean free path and in media where optical scattering need not dominate absorption. The pMC/dMC approach is found to be effective over a broad range of absorption (50 to 400%) and scattering (70 to 130%) perturbations. The recovery of optical properties from spatially resolved diffuse reflectance measurements is examined for different sets of source-detector separation. These results provide some guidance for the design of compact fiber-based probes to determine and isolate optical properties from both epithelial and stromal layers of superficial tissues.

The directional polarization sensitivity of articular cartilage and meniscus is investigated by use of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) by varying the angle of incident illumination. Experimental results show that when the incident light is perpendicular to the tissue surface, normal articular cartilage demonstrates little polarization sensitivity, while meniscus demonstrates strong polarization sensitivity. Differences in optical phase retardation produced by articular cartilage and meniscus are observed when the incident angle of the scanning light beam is adjusted between 0 and 90 deg relative to the tissue surface. Directional polarization sensitivity of articular cartilage and meniscus as obtained by PS-OCT imaging using variations in the angle of incident illumination can be used to assess the orientation and organization of the collagen matrix of these tissues. The polarization sensitivity as evidenced by the Stokes vector and optical phase retardation images can be explained by the orientation of the angle of illumination relative to the unique structural organization of the collagen fibrils and fibers of articular cartilage and meniscus.

Biomedical optics and photomedicine applications are challenged by the turbidity of most biological tissue systems. Nonreactive, biocompatible chemical agents can induce a reversible reduction in optical scattering of collagenous tissues such as human skin. Herein we show that a chemical agent's tissue optical clearing potential is directly related to its collagen solubility, providing a rational design basis for effective, percutaneous formulations.

We use the Born approximation of the radiative transport equation to recover simultaneously the absorption and scattering coefficients in a single layer of a two-layer tissue sample from reflectance data. This method reduces the estimation of both optical properties to a single linear, least-squares problem. It is valid over length scales smaller than a transport mean free path and hence is useful for epithelial tissue layers. We demonstrate the accuracy of this method by using spatially resolved reflectance data computed with Monte Carlo simulations.

Refractometry is a powerful technique for pressure assessments that, due to the recent redefinition of the SI system, also offers a new route to realizing the SI unit of pressure, the Pascal. Gas modulation refractometry (GAMOR) is a methodology that has demonstrated an outstanding ability to mitigate the influences of drifts and fluctuations, leading to long-term precision in the 10−7 region. However, its short-term performance, which is of importance for a variety of applications, has not yet been scrutinized. To assess this, we investigated the short-term performance (in terms of precision) of two similar, but independent, dual Fabry–Perot cavity refractometers utilizing the GAMOR methodology. Both systems assessed the same pressure produced by a dead weight piston gauge. That way, their short-term responses were assessed without being compromised by any pressure fluctuations produced by the piston gauge or the gas delivery system. We found that the two refractometer systems have a significantly higher degree of concordance (in the 10−8 range at 1 s) than what either of them has with the piston gauge. This shows that the refractometry systems under scrutiny are capable of assessing rapidly varying pressures (with bandwidths up to 2 Hz) with precision in the 10−8 range.

The Refractive Indices Mean Molecular Polarizability Diamagnetic Susceptibilities and Electron Ionisation Cross Section are interpreted in terms of dosages and the toxic effects if any due to over dosages are discussed critically.

Abstract Background Tunic is a cellulosic, integumentary matrix found in tunicates (Subphylum Tunicata or Urochordata). The tunics of some ascidian species and pelagic tunicates, such as salps, are nearly transparent, which is useful in predator avoidance. Transparent materials can be detected visually using light reflected from their surfaces, with the different refractive indices between two media, i.e., tunic and seawater, being the measure of reflectance. A larger difference in refractive indices thus provides a larger measure of reflectance. Results We measured the refractive indices of the transparent tunic of Thetys vagina (salp: Thaliacea) and Rhopalaea sp. (ascidian: Ascidiacea) using an Abbe refractometer and an ellipsometer to estimate the light reflection at the tunic surface and evaluate the anti-reflection effect of the nipple array structure on the tunic surface of T. vagina. At D-line light (λ = 589 nm), the refractive indices of the tunics were 0.002–0.004 greater than seawater in the measurements by Abbe refractometer, and 0.02–0.03 greater than seawater in the measurements by ellipsometer. The refractive indices of tunics were slightly higher than that of seawater. According to the simulation of light reflection based on rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA), light at a large angle of incidence will be completely reflected from a surface when its refractive indices are smaller than seawater. Therefore, the refractive index of integument is important for enabling transparent organisms to remain invisible in the water column. Conclusion In order to minimize reflectance, the refractive index should be similar to, but never smaller than, that of the surrounding seawater. The simulation also indicated that the presence or absence of a nipple array does not cause significant difference in reflectance on the surface. The nipple array on the tunic of the diurnal salp may have another function, such as bubble repellence, other than anti-reflection.

ABSTRACT Total serum protein is a significant indicator of health condition in animals. The aim of this study was to analyze the precision of the portable refractometer in determining the concentration of total serum proteins in Podocnemis expansa and Phrynops geoffroanus. A total of 26 animals were used. The blood samples were collected from the supraoccipital sinus and stored in tubes without anticoagulant. Total serum protein was determined using both the biuret reaction and refractometry. The total serum protein mean concentration (g dL-1) with biuret method and refractometry for P. expansa were 3.16 and 3.2; and for P. geoffroanus were 3.56 and 2.72, respectively. These results indicate that total serum protein values can be determined with precision in P. expansa and P. geoffroanus using a portable refractometer.
