Textile dyes discharged into aquatic systems can have significant environmental impacts, causing water pollution and toxicity to aquatic life, and constituting a human health risk. To manage these effects, the sorption ability of wood biowaste chemically modified by Bi2O3 for textile dye removal was investigated. Sorbent characterization was performed using scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for the specific surface area, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy–attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The optimization of the sorption process was carried out, and optimal parameters, such as contact time, pH, the dose of sorbent, the concentration of dye, and temperature, were defined. Also, desorption studies were conducted. Kinetics and isotherms studies were carried out, and the data fits to a pseudo-second order model (r2 ≥ 0.99) and Langmuir model (r2 ≥ 0.99), indicating that the process occurs in the monolayer form and the dye sorption depends on the active sites of the sorbent surface. A stable crystalline organic porous salt (CPOSs‐NXU‐1) with 1D apertures has been assembled by the solvothermal method, which shows high‐sensitivity "turn‐on" fluorescence detection and large‐capacity adsorption of As(III) ions in water. The detection limits, saturated adsorption capacity, and removal rate of CPOSs‐NXU‐1 for As(III) ions in an aqueous solution can reach 74.34 nm (5.57 ppb), 451.01 mg g−1, and 99.6%, respectively, at pH = 7 and room temperature. With the aid of XPS, IR, Raman, and DFT theoretical calculations, it is determined that CPOSs‐NXU‐1 adsorbed As(III) ions in the form of H2AsO3− and H3AsO3 through hydrogen bonding between the host and guest. The mechanism for fluorescence sensitization of As(III) ions to CPOSs‐NXU‐1 is mainly to increase the energy level difference between the ground state and excited state investigated by UV–vis absorption spectra, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and theoretical calculations. By constructing fluorescent CPOSs, an integrated solution has been achieved to treating As(III) contamination in the water that is equipped with detection and removal. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the phenylurea herbicide Diuron (C9H10Cl2N2O) as possibly carcinogenic to humans. This research is focused on the adsorbent performances of a Algerian sodium Montmorillonite (Mont-Na), for the removal of Diuron in aqueous solutions. The material is characterised before and after processing using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface area (SBET) and thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The tests were firstly realised at 25°C and pH = 6.3. Until 61 hours of experiment, no removal was obtained in this case. After that, the experiments were carried out on Mont-Na at high temperature and medium pH (T = 45°C, pH = 6.3) and then at ambient temperature and basic pH (T = 25°C, pH = 11). The removal was increased from 74% to 91%, respectively. The equilibrium is reached after 5 hours and the adsorption capacity is between 0.74 mg/g at 45°C and 0.91 mg/g at pH = 11. The kinetic modelling shows that the pseudo-first order describes the experimental data of the Diuron adsorption on Mont-Na and the equilibrium data are modelled perfectly by applying the Elovich model. The thermodynamic quantities indicate that the adsorption process on Mont-Na at pH = 6.3 is spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and endothermic (ΔH = 31.80 kJ.mol−1). In conclusion, under the operating conditions used, local Mont-Na proved to be an excellent material for the adsorption of Diuron in aqueous solutions. In this study, Sorel cement (SC) was doped with Mn7+ to develop a cost-effective adsorbent that can quickly remove methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions. The characteristics of the prepared adsorbents were examined using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The examinations confirmed the formation of SC and the successful doping of manganese. Batch adsorption experiments were also performed to investigate and to optimise the operational parameters such as Mn7+ ion concentration, contact time, dosage, MB concentration, pH, and temperature. The modified adsorbent revealed a significant adsorption improvement when compared with pure SC. A small addition of 0.01 g of Mn7+ exhibited 100% removal efficiency up to a dye concentration of about 100 mg/L, whereas about 64% removal efficiency was obtained with pure SC using 36.5 mg/L of the MB solution. Furthermore, the modified adsorbent revealed rapid equilibrium times of around 1 and 3 minutes using 36.5 and 100 mg/L of the MB solution, respectively. An experimental adsorption capacity of up to 246 mg/g was obtained, and the equilibrium data were consistent with the Freundlich isotherm and were well fitted with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic values indicated a physisorption, exothermic (ΔH° = −7.7 kJ/mol), and spontaneous (ΔG° = −9.4 kJ/mol) nature of the adsorption process with enhanced feasibility and comparable regeneration efficiency for up to five cycles. Effective removal or degradation over heterogeneous catalysts in ambient circumstances remains a challengeable research topic for environmental cleansing and carbon compound utilization. In this work, Prunus cerasifera seeds biomass was carefully converted to mesoporous activated carbon (AC) by chemical activation. AC was loaded with zirconium (Zr) and gallium (Ga) to create AC-Zr and AC-Zr-Ga, respectively. Numerous analytical techniques, including BET, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDX, were used to characterize the newly synthesized adsorbents. According to BET analysis, the mesopore volume of 0.008 cc/g, or 73% of the total pore volume, was paired with a specific surface area of 1710 m2/g in the specially synthesized activated carbon. However, AC-Zr showed improved mesopore volume of 0.091 cc/g and higher specific surface area of 1802 m2/g. Nevertheless, the overall surface properties do not change much, when gallium metal is placed onto the AC-Zr surface. In order to evaluate the degradation/adsorption capacity of AC-Zr-Ga, the degradation extent of ten pesticides was examined in both light and dark environments. When exposed to sunlight, the as-prepared AC-Zr-Ga exhibits effective photocatalytic elimination of ten specific pesticides. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of the precisely synthesized, gallium and zirconium-loaded activated carbon, creating new opportunities for innovative environmental remediation initiatives. This study is concerned with the physicochemical investigation of cobalt (II) sorptions from aqueous solution by potato peel (PP) and NaOH/CaCl2/C2H5OH‐modified potato peel (MPP). The sorption conditions of PP and MPP under optimized conditions were optimized according to the maximum effects of the main factors affecting the sorption processes (PP and MPP dosage, sorbate concentration, interaction time, and temperature) at pH 6.78. The kinetic and equilibrium experimental sorption data of the studied sorbates were simulated using commonly used models and were found to fit well with pseudo‐second‐order and Langmuir models. The Co(II) ion adsorption capacity of PP was determined as 12.25, 16.44, and 20.74 mg/g, respectively, at various temperatures (25, 35, and 45 °C), while the adsorption capacity of MPP under the same conditions was determined as 41.49, 52.35, and 62.50 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters determined for each sorption system showed that the sorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous. 2,4-Dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) is a broadly applied nitroaromatic compound with multiple applications, and its simple production has resulted in its extensive utilization in producing explosives, dyes, and rubber. This substance is hazardous and induces genetic mutations in humans, fish, and microorganisms. Thus, this research was done to assess the effectiveness of the three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3D/EF) process employing magnetic activated carbon particle electrodes (GAC/Fe3O4) in eliminating 2,4-dinitrotoluene from water-based solutions. In this experimental investigation, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were created using the chemical co-precipitation technique. The G/β-PbO2 anode was fabricated by electrochemically depositing PbO2 layers on graphite sheets. G/β-PbO2 and stainless steel were utilized as the anode and cathode, respectively. The structure, particle size, and properties of the GAC/Fe3O4 nanocomposite were analyzed using FESEM, XRD, and EDX. The morphology of the G/β-PbO2 electrode was also examined using SEM. The Taguchi experimental design method was employed to identify the optimal conditions. The outcomes demonstrated that higher reaction time and current density, as well as lower pH and pollutant concentration, resulted in improved 3D/EF efficiency. Accordingly, the optimum values of parmeters were identified to be a concentration of 2,4-DNT = 50 mg/L, pH = 3, electrolysis time = 100 min, and current density = 8 mA/cm2. With these parameters, the degradation efficiency of 2,4-DNT through the examined system was 98.42 %, alongside removal efficiencies of 84.69 % for COD and 79.67 % for TOC. Additionally, the results indicated an increase in the average oxidation state (AOS) (from 1.27 to 1.95) and carbon oxidation state (COS) (from 1.27 to 2.75) in the 3D/EF process, along with a decrease in the COD/TOC ratio (from 1.81 to 1.36), indicating the effectiveness of the 3D/EF system in enhancing the biodegradability of 2,4-DNT. Overall, the combined 3D/EF process with a G/β-PbO2 anode has relatively high efficiency in degrading solutions containing DNT and can be considered a viable treatment option for wastewater containing substances such as 2,4-DNT. Purpose: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the breakage of tibio-fibular syndesmotic screws (SS). Methods: 69 patients with unstable AO-Weber Type 44-B ankle fractures who underwent three cortex SS (3.5 mm ø) fixation were included. Patients were followed for at least one year (mean, 18.3 ± 7.6 months). At the final follow-up, patients with broken (Group I) and intact (Group II) SS were compared regarding age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, fracture type, SS length, location, and orientation. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the independent risk factors associated with SS breakage. The sensitivity, specificity, cut-off value, and area under the ROC curve were analyzed. Results: A stepwise backward logistic regression analysis revealed that age was the only independent predictor for SS breakage (OR = 0.938, 95% CI = 0.904–0.973, R2 = 0.270). ROC curve analysis demonstrated that patients younger than 36 years were associated with seven times increased risk of SS breakage [Odds ratio (95% CI), 7.042 (2.251–22.031)]. Conclusion: Age under 36 years was the only significant risk factor for SS breakage. The higher incidence of breakage of the syndesmotic screw can be informed to patients younger than 36. Contact lens neophytes often learn about contact lens insertion and removal through YouTube videos of unknown quality. This study evaluates the quality of soft contact lens insertion and removal videos on YouTube. A search for the keywords 'Contact lens insertion', 'Contact lens removal', 'Put in contact lens', and 'Take off contact lens' was performed on YouTube. The first 50 videos for each keyword were evaluated. The number of views, source of the publisher, days since upload, and video quality were scored based on the content in the videos. The maximum score of insertion and removal videos were 7 and 5 respectively. The videos were classified into three groups by publisher category: videos published by eye care professionals, companies and YouTubers. Only 45 contact lens insertion and 44 removal videos met the inclusion criteria and were analysed. Insertion and removal videos published by YouTubers had the highest view and view rate. However, their quality scores were significantly lower than videos published by eye care professionals and companies. Videos uploaded by companies had the highest scores (insertion: 5.00 ± 1.10; removal: 3.25 ± 0.75). The mean scores of insertion and removal videos published by YouTubers were 1.65 ± 0.93 and 1.00 ± 0.89, respectively, while the insertion and removal videos uploaded by eye care professionals scored 3.58 ± 2.07 and 2.75 ± 1.53, respectively. There was also a negative correlation between the quality scores and view rate (p = 0.008, r = -0.41). Contact lens insertion and removal videos uploaded by YouTubers had the highest view rate but the lowest quality. Videos made by companies included most essential elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) cause environmental pollution and serious health issues. Therefore, magnetic fluorinated porous carbons (M-FPCs) derived from the carbonization and further fluorination of Fe-Zr MOFs were used as novel adsorbents to investigate the possibility of PFC removal from wastewater. Investigation of the adsorption behavior of PFCs on M-FPCs revealed that the isotherms conformed to the Langmuir model and kinetics fit the pseudo-second-order model. Simulations using the Weber–Morris and Boyd diffusion models indicated that the adsorption of PFCs on M-FPCs involved external mass transfer first, followed by intraparticle diffusion, where film diffusion was the primary controlling process. M-FPCs with maximum adsorption ranging from 518.1 to 919.3 mg g− 1 for studied PFCs were adopted to remove PFCs from simulated wastewaters of textile mill and leather factory. Up to 98.1–100.0% of PFCs were removed within 15 min, and the residual levels of PFCs reached drinking water standards after treatment, which suggests the promising application of M-FPCs in the removal of PFCs from wastewater. Pazopanib, which is dangerous for aquatic environments due to its toxic and bioaccumulation potential, has been detected at different concentrations in oncology hospital wastewater, sewage, and surface waters. This study aimed to remove pazopanib from wastewater by activated carbon adsorption technique. The effect of the main variables such as initial concentration, pH of pazopanib solution, adsorbent dose, contact time of the phases, and temperature on the adsorption process was evaluated and the optimum adsorption conditions were determined. The experimental data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm models to describe the adsorption behavior. The experimental data were applied to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion kinetic models to describe the adsorption kinetics. Isotherms were established in the 20–50 °C temperature range to study the adsorption equilibrium. According to the results, the highest removal efficiency of pazopanib (95.87%) was obtained at initial concentration (100 mg L−1), adsorbent dose (0.30 g L−1), temperature (20 °C), contact time (120 min) and pH (7.0). The adsorption kinetics was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9998) and the adsorption isotherm by the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.9999). In thermodynamic studies, the negative values of standard enthalpy (ΔH°), standard free enthalpy (ΔG°), and free entropy (ΔS°) indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and favorable, i.e. the disorder is reduced. These results indicate that the developed adsorption process can be efficiently and spontaneously applied for the removal of pazopanib from aqueous solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The legacy of intentional freshwater fish introductions across the western United States has fostered social tensions over the control of nonnative species in some contexts. Overcoming tensions and implementing effective control programs is important for mitigating impacts to native species. We modeled the efficacy of incentivized harvest for controlling nuisance smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) using empirical responses measured during fishing tournaments on two reservoirs that are sources of nonnative predators to critical habitat of native species. Simulations demonstrated that anglers could suppress adult smallmouth bass by 90%–99% in under 30 years, but were contingent on program participation and density dependence in harvest efficiency (i.e., catchability) and population demographics. Catchability differed between systems and varied temporally within the same system, thereby suggesting tournament structure could be adapted to increase harvest rates. Incentivized harvest should not be dismissed as a viable control strategy alone or in tandem with other methods in small lentic systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present research aims to investigate the biosorption capacity of microbial biomass supported onto granular pozzolana toward Chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC). Biosorption studies were carried out in a discontinuous system and various experimental conditions that may affect the biosorption process were evaluated including particle size of the support, the speed of agitation, the mass of the support, contact time, initial pH of the solution, and the initial concentration of CTC. At 25°C, the optimum conditions for maximum removal of CTC by immobilized microbial cells were as follows: grain size of pozzolana was between 4 and 5 mm, a stirring speed (SS) was 160 rpm, pozzolana masse was 45 g, initial pH was 7.44, the initial CTC concentration was 40 mg/L, and the equilibrium time was 5 h. Under the optimal process parameters, a maximum CTC removal rate of 93.76% was obtained. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models have been applied to describe isothermal equilibrium studies of biosorption. The Freundlich model was well-fitted with the equilibrium data (R2 = 0.99). The isotherm behaviour indicated that the biosorbent surface was heterogeneous, and the biosorption capacity of the microbial biomass calculated from the Langmuir model was 118.98 mg/g. The kinetic behaviour showed that the CTC biosorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, which suggested a chemisorption process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides an overview of the diverse applications of hydrogels in nutrient recovery from water and wastewater. Due to their unique properties, such as high water-retention capacity, nutrient rerelease, and tunable porosity, hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for efficient nutrient capture and recycling. It has been suggested that hydrogels, depending on their composition, can be reused in agriculture, especially in drought-prone areas. Further research paths have been identified that could expand their application in these regions. However, the main focus of the article is to highlight the current gaps in understanding how hydrogels bind nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The study underscores the need for research that specifically examines how different components of hydrogel matrices interact with each other and with recovered nutrients. Furthermore, it is essential to assess how various nutrient-recovery parameters, such as temperature, pH, and heavy metal content, interact with each other and with specific matrix compositions. This type of research is crucial for enhancing both the recovery efficiency and selectivity of these hydrogels, which are critical for advancing nutrient-recovery technologies and agricultural applications. The major problems related to environmental pollution are increasingly present among us. The uncontrolled use and incorrect disposal of products means that these problems are increasing at frightening rates. In this context, a major related problem is the incorrect disposal of dishwasher sponges that are no longer useful; their material being made up of petroleum derivatives causes this problem to be leveraged in the environment. In the present work, we evaluated and carried out tests in which these dirty sponges that would be discarded were used for the purpose of developing new sustainable adsorbent materials. These materials were washed and dried, crushed and made available for use, by which they were kept in contact with a paracetamol solution, evaluating the effect of mass, pH, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamic parameters, and cost analyses. The results demonstrated an adsorptive capacity of approximately 40 mg g−1 and its cost was relatively viable, since this material would otherwise be discarded incorrectly. This study examined the effect of experimental factors and conditions on the removal of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (NCHCs) by performing equilibrium extraction using formamide or formamide aqueous solution as a solvent to remove NCHCs contained in crude methylnaphthalene oil (CMNO). The CMNO used as a raw material in this study contained three types of NCHCs (quinoline, isoquinoline, and indole) classified as group A, and six kinds of non-NCHCs (naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, biphenyl, dibenzofuran, and fluorene) classified as group B. Increasing the volume fraction of water to the solvent before the extraction run increased the raffinate residual rate but conversely decreased the removal rate of group A. The increase in the volume fraction of solvent to feed before the extraction run and operating temperature decreased the residual rate of raffinate but conversely increased the removal rate of group A. Over the entire range of extraction conditions performed in this study, the removal rate of group A ranged from 10.8% to 70.7%. Considering that these experimental results were obtained using only a single stage of batch equilibrium extraction, the formamide extraction method applied in this study showed excellent performance in terms of the residual rate of raffinate and the removal rate of group A. Therefore, it was expected to be an alternative to the reaction extraction method using acids and bases applied so far to separate NCHCs in the distillation residue of coal tar. The vacuum preloading coupling flocculation treatment is a widely employed method for reinforcing soils with high water content in practical construction. However, uneven distribution and accumulation of flocculants pose significant damage to the soil environment and result in uneven soil consolidation, leading to severe issues in subsequent soil development and exploitation. To address these concerns, an evolved leaching with vacuum method is developed for facilitating soil consolidation while preventing the accumulation of flocculant in the soil. In this study, five model tests are conducted in which FeCl3 is chosen as the typical flocculant to promote soil consolidation, and deionized water is used for leaching. The final discharged water, settlement, water content and penetration resistance of soil are obtained to evaluate the soil reinforcement effect, while the flocculant removal effect is evaluated by the Fe3+ content in the filtrate and soil. The comprehensive reinforcement and flocculant removal effect show that this method is extremely effective compared to traditional vacuum preloading. The two leaching is clarified as the best choice, resulting in a 22% decrease in the soil water content and a 25% in soil penetration resistance, meanwhile a 12.8% removal rate of the flocculant. The test results demonstrate that leaching with vacuum preloading can contribute to promoting soil consolidation and reducing the accumulation of flocculant in the soil, ensuring the safe and eco-friendly use of the soil for future applications. Electrocoagulation has demonstrated its efficacy in treating industrial effluents by effectively removing pollutants, particularly metallic contaminants. The electrochemical processes occurring at aluminum electrodes have shown excellent performance in this regard. In this study, electrocoagulation experiments were conducted on an industrial effluent originating from an electroplating bath situated in Casablanca, Morocco. The primary objective was to eliminate chromium in the effluent and reuse the processed water for other applications within our facility. To achieve this goal, we systematically optimized various operational parameters influencing the electrocoagulation efficiency, including electrical voltage, electrode material, stirring speed, and electrode spacing. Additionally, we assessed their impact on pH, conductivity, and chromium concentration. The experiments were conducted in a well-mixed reactor using an industrial solution containing a high concentration of chromium, specifically 1 g/l of Cr (VI). The chromium removal efficiency was evaluated under specific operational conditions, including the use of aluminum electrodes, regulated voltages of 6 volts and 12 volts, an optimal stirring speed of 600 rpm, and an electrode spacing of 2 cm. In view of the problems that alkali to solanite concentrate turned red and acid soluble slurry thickened into foam during comprehensive recovery, which led to product discoloration and decreased production capacity, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and infrared spectrum analysis were used to analyze the composition of ore pollutants, and the removal effect of calcination method on monazite concentrate contaminants were studied through condition test and pilot plant tests. The results show that the alkali transformation color is mainly caused by the organic matter containing carboxyl group, benzene ring or cycloalkane covering the monazite surface. Under the conditions of calcination temperature of 400 °C and calcination time of 40 min, the COD removal rate of alkali to pulp is greater than 94%, and the organic matter removal effect is good, which can solve the problem of 30% reduction in production and processing capacity, reduce power consumption and energy consumption, remove occupational health and other safety and environmental risks caused by fluting in production, and ensure the recovery rate of uranium and rare earth. Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide worldwide, and it has significant environmental concerns due to its toxic ecological effects. This work uses diatomite decorated with gold nanoparticles to evaluate its capacity for atrazine adsorption. The structural characterization was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), Fluorescence microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Our findings reveal that diatomite decorated with gold nanoparticles with an average particle size of 10 nm enhances the Raman signal and fluorescence intensity for atrazine detection. Experimental conditions, such as atrazine concentration, pH, contact time, and diatomite mass, have been optimized to quantify the maximum removal conditions using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, reaching a maximum adsorption of 2.5 mg/g in 4 h. FTIR and XPS evidence the interaction of the amine groups of the atrazine with the diatomite-decorated surface. The impact of this work relies on environmental remediation using naturally available diatomite decorated with gold nanoparticles and understanding the binding interactions for the removal of atrazine.

A new method utilizing sugarcane bagasse-derived ash (SB-dA) to remove and convert gold(III) to valuable noble gold metal has been developed. The SB-dA was purified with a mixed solution of 0.1 mol/L HCl and 0.3 mol/L HF, followed by 3 mol/L HNO3, resulting in a silica-rich material with silanol (Si–OH) and siloxane (Si–O–Si) groups, along with an aromatic component. The gold(III) removal was endothermic (ΔHo of 34.51 kJ/mol) and spontaneous (ΔGo ranging from −27.72 to −29.81 kJ/mol as temperature increased from 30 to 50 °C). The activation energy (Ea) and standard entropy (ΔSo) values were 35.15 and 0.2 kJ/mol, respectively, indicating increased interfacial irregularity during gold(III) removal. At an optimum pH of 4.2, the removal followed the Langmuir isotherm and the second-order kinetics models. The rate constant (k2) enhanced from 3.32 to 7.56 × 102 L/mol·min, and Langmuir's removal capacity (b) rose from 0.18 to 0.25 × 10⁻⁴ mol/g as temperature increased from 30 to 50 °C. Silanol and siloxane groups played crucial role in gold(III) removal through adsorption, with silanol also active in reducing gold(III) to gold metal, a process that intensified by increasing temperatures.

Intentional removal of unwanted information allows us to focus on our current goals. Previous research has shown that suppressing the maintenance of neutral images in working memory can impair access to that information in immediate and delayed memory tests. However, it remains unclear whether maintenance suppression has the same impact on emotionally valenced images. Intrusive thinking (e.g., rumination) often involves negative thoughts that persist as individuals attempt to push them out of mind. Given the emotional nature of intrusive information that can repeatedly enter working memory, it is important to understand how the valence of information affects the ability to remove it. Participants in a non-clinical sample completed a working memory removal experiment using group-normed images with positive and negative valence. Participants encoded two images of the same valence on each trial, were cued to suppress or maintain one of them during a brief delay period, and then responded to a memory probe in which they indicated whether the test image had been presented on the current trial, regardless of whether or how it was cued. Our results demonstrate that participants were faster, relative to uncued items, to endorse an item that had been cued for maintenance, and slower to endorse an item that had been cued for suppression. Importantly, this pattern held for both positive and negative items and did not differ between valences. These findings replicate those obtained using emotionally neutral stimuli. Thus, this study demonstrates that maintenance suppression reduces the accessibility of visual information in working memory, regardless of its emotional valence, and suggests that this cognitive strategy could potentially be an effective tool in reducing intrusive thoughts that occupy the focus of attention.

The aim of this research was to separate the over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), ibuprofen, from an aqueous solution using the adsorption method, as this NSAID is one of the most globally consumed. An adsorbent was crafted from the Agave angustifolia bagasse, a byproduct of the bacanora industry (a representative alcoholic beverage of the state of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico). Three bioadsorbents (BCT1, BCT2, and BCT3) were produced via pyrolysis at a temperature of 550 °C, with slight variations in each process for every bioadsorbent. The bioadsorbents achieved material yields of 25.65%, 31.20%, and 38.28% on dry basis respectively. Characterization of the bagasse and adsorbents involved scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The biomass morphology exhibited a cracked surface with holes induced via the bacanora production process, while the surface of the bioadsorbents before ibuprofen adsorption was highly porous, with a substantial surface area. After adsorption, the surface of the bioadsorbents was transformed into a smoother grayish layer. The macromolecules of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were present in the biomass. According to functional groups, cellulose and hemicellulose degraded to form the resulting bioadsorbents, although traces of lignin persisted after the pyrolysis process was applied to the biomass. In an adsorption study, BCT1 and BCT2 bioadsorbents successfully removed 100% of ibuprofen from aqueous solutions with an initial concentration of 62.6 mg/L. In conclusion, the biocarbon derived from Agave angustifolia bagasse exhibited significant potential for removing ibuprofen via adsorption from aqueous solutions.

A modified steel slag adsorbent was prepared with composite modifier(NaOH or Al(OH)3+fly ash) at high temperature. The effects of alkali melting temperature, alkali melting time and alkali doping on the adsorption performance of Pb(Ⅱ) was investigated. Chemical composition, mineral composition, microstructure and pore size was analyzed with XRF, XRD, SEM, BET and other methods. The heavy metal leaching toxicity, regeneration ability and selectivity of the modified steel slag prepared under the optimal conditions were investigated. The results showed that the best adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) was achieved under the conditions of 700 ℃ alkali melting temperature, 4 h alkali melting time and 100∶10∶20 mass ratio of steel slag, fly ash and Al(OH)3. There was not new crystal in the modified steel slag, but the original crystal structure was destroyed, and porous aluminum silicate salt with certain activity was formed. Loose fine molten particles were accumulated on the surface of steel slag, and pore size was concentrated in the range of 5-20 nm. Under the combined effect of pore adsorption, chemical precipitation and ion exchange, the removal rate of Pb(Ⅱ) from wastewater reached 98.15%. The modified steel slag adsorbent had better regeneration and selectivity, which was a green and safe heavy metal ion adsorbent.

Abstract Study design Retrospective case series. Objectives We aimed to describe with a novel surgical approach for the removal of posterior thoracolumbar implant in patients with symptomatic failure of the implant and present our preliminary results with this method. Methods This retrospective, single-center study was performed in the neurosurgery department of a university hospital. Data were gathered from the medical files of 314 patients (243 women, 77.39%; 71 men, 22.61%) with symptomatic thoracolumbar implant failure that underwent implant removal operation using our novel technique between 2010 and 2020. Symptoms, radiological findings, intraoperative findings as well as clinical outcomes were evaluated. Results In our series, the average age was 46.5 years (range: 21–84) with a mean follow-up duration of 7 years (range: 3 months to 10 years). Preoperatively, the most common symptoms were leg pain and numbness of the lower extremity. Postoperatively, no major complications were noted. Clinical progression of symptoms was avoided by surgery in all patients, while we came across removal difficulties due to screw–screwdriver mismatch in 15 of 314 surgeries (4.78%). Our novel approach allowed successful screw removal including these challenging cases. Conclusions We suggest that our novel approach is a practical and effective for the removal of posterior thoracolumbar implant in cases with symptomatic failure attributed to screw–screwdriver mismatch. Further trials are warranted to assess the efficacy of this technique to overcome surgical problems associated with screw removal.

Introduction: Phytoremediation is a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly process that utilizes plants and microorganisms for purification of the polluted land. In this study, the fast-growing species Salix acmophylla from the Salicaceae family was selected for phytoremediation purposes. Materials and Methods: With the aim of exploring the potential of Salix acmophylla in wastewater purification, a research initiative was launched in 2020, Following initial land preparation on a 5-hectare site next to a wastewater treatment plant, 60,000 Salix acmophylla cuttings were planted. By 2022, the trees had matured to a height of 3-4 meters. Wastewater samples were then collected and analyzed for pollutant levels both before entering the planted area and after passing through drainage channels built among the trees. This allowed researchers to calculate the average efficiency of Salix acmophylla in reducing wastewater pollutants. Results: The results regarding the impact of Salix acmophylla trees on the reduction of wastewater Characteristics in the cultivation area were the following: COD, BOD5, TSS, TDS, EC, and turbidity exhibited reductions of 38%, 42%, 17.5%, 79%, 52.2%, and 45.6%, respectively. Additionally, the estimated income from the cultivation of these trees was approximately $49,000. Conclusion: Planting Salix acmophylla trees significantly contributes to the reduction of wastewater pollutant parameters, suggesting the recommendation of this species for similar climates.

This is an article in the field of metallurgical engineering. The preparation of black copper electrolyte by removing copper from secondary refining slag of high copper and high tin anode furnace by hydrogen peroxide oxidation and acid leaching was studied. The process conditions related to the removal efficiency of the copper and arsenic were researched including the hydrogen peroxide dosage, reaction temperature, sulfuric acid concentration and reaction time. Results show that, under the following optimal conditions, including refining slag of 20.0 g, 2.5 mol/L sulfuric acid of 200 mL, solid-liquid ratio of 1/10, temperature of 65 ℃, dosage of hydrogen peroxide of 10.0 mL, stirring speed of 400 r/min and leaching time of 60 min, the leaching ratios of Cu and As can reach 88.98% and 87.33%, respectively, and the leaching ratios of Ni and Sn were only 7.72% and 1.34%, respectively. The concentration of copper ion in the leaching solution was 48.48 g/L, which can be used as the supplement of black copper electrolyte.

Abstract Recently, focus has been placed on renewable sources, as they can be provided in large quantities at the lowest possible cost, in order to create nanoparticles. One of these sources is Zygnema moss which used in the present investigation to create Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs). Several phenols and flavonoids were identified the extract of Zygnema sp. via analysis of High performance liquid chromatography. These constituents served as reducing and stabilizing agents for CuONPs. Characterization of CuONPs was performed via UV-visible spectrum that demonstrated peak at 252 nm, Transmission electron microscopy that showed spherical CuONPs with mean diameter of 30.06 nm, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy that confirm that presence of several functional groups aided to formation of CuONPs. The crystallographic pattern of CuONPs was recorded via X-ray diffraction analysis. Antimicrobial potential of CuONPs was compared to copper acetate and antibiotic/antifungal drug. CuONPs exhibited more inhibition zones against S. aureus (32 ± 0.1 mm), E. coli (36 ± 0.1 mm), S. typhi (27 ± 0.2 mm), E. faecalis (37 ± 0.1 mm), C. albicans (34 ± 0.3 mm) than copper acetate and antibiotic/antifungal drug. Promising MIC values of were recorded against S. aureus, E. coli, and S. typhi. CuONPs at 200 ppm inhibited the growth of C. lunata, F. oxysporium, A. flavus, and Mucor circinelloid with inhibtion of 76.92, 73.33, 63.63, and 53.84%, respectively regarded the control 100% growth. The photocatalytic role of CuONPs was recorded for degradation of reactive red (RR195) and reactive blue (RB) dyes with maximum degradation of 84.66% and 90.82%, respectively at 75 min. Moreover, the optimal dyes degradation was 84.66 and 90.82%, respectively at 40 °C.

Heavy metals and organic dyes pose significant environmental concerns due to their persistence, toxicity, and tendency to accumulate in the food chain. These pollutants are often discharged from various industrial sources without proper management, resulting in unacceptable damage to the environment. The use of low-cost agricultural by-products can be a sustainable and green solution for the industrial effluent treatment process. In the present research, the effective removal of Cd2+ and disperse black‒9 (DB‒9) dye simultaneously was planned through the adsorption method utilizing specially activated carbon (AC) derived from rice husk. FTIR, SEM, and XRD were used to characterize the produced AC. The adsorption studies showed that approximately 88% of the dye DB‒9 and 97% of Cd2+ were adsorbed by using optimal dosages of the AC, which were 16 g/L and 12 g/L, respectively. In addition, it was successfully demonstrated that Cd2+ adsorbed AC was capable of binding with DB‒9 and also DB‒9 adsorbed AC is capable of binding with Cd2+. Therefore, a novel strategy for the simultaneous elimination of Cd2+ and DB-9 ideas was successfully implemented in the current study. In addition, equilibrium data were examined to assess the adsorbate-adsorbent system's isotherms. The Langmuir isotherm was determined to be the most well-fitting, with a maximum uptake of 11.48 mg/g. Thermodynamic study (ΔG⁰) showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, and the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics.

Pesticides have been reported in treated wastewater effluent at concentrations that exceed aquatic toxicity thresholds, indicating that treatment may be insufficient to adequately address potential pesticide impacts on aquatic life. Gaining a better understanding of the relative contribution from specific use patterns, transport pathways, and flow characteristics is an essential first step to informing source control measures. The results of this study are the first of their kind, reporting pesticide concentrations at sub-sewershed sites within a single sewer catchment to provide information on the relative contribution from various urban sources. Seven monitoring events were collected from influent, effluent, and seven sub-sewershed sites to capture seasonal variability. In addition, samples were collected from sites with the potential for relatively large mass fluxes of pesticides (pet grooming operations, pest control operators, and laundromats). Fipronil and imidacloprid were detected in most samples (>70%). Pyrethroids were detected in >50% of all influent and lateral samples. There were significant removals of pyrethroids from the aqueous process stream within the facility to below reporting limits. Imidacloprid and fiproles were the only pesticides that were detected above reporting limits in effluent, highlighting the importance of source identification and control for the more hydrophilic compounds. Single source monitoring revealed large contributions of fipronil, imidacloprid, and permethrin originating from a pet groomer, with elevated levels of cypermethrin at a commercial laundry location. The results provide important information needed to prioritize future monitoring efforts, calibrate down-the-drain models, and identify potential mitigation strategies at the site of pesticide use to prevent introduction to sewersheds.

The removal of undocumented migrants has become a widespread preoccupation of current European migration politics and one of the most emotionally contentious state practices of our times. Not only right-wing populists and their constituencies demand an increase in expulsions, but also mainstream society. Others accuse these positions of being racist or lacking humanism and instead promote solidarity to help people seeking protection in Europe. These divisive views and migrants’ often long-term experience of being ‘unwanted’ and deportable provoke strong and often irreconcilable emotions. The ethnographic explorations assembled here zoom in on the ‘affective economies’ inherent in the arbitrary processes and unpredictable experiences of removals of people from Europe to different parts of the world. This special issue puts forward a twofold argument: First, conceptually, we argue that a focus on affects is indispensable in order to fully unearth the complexities of removal processes. And second, methodologically, we contend that an ethnographic approach, with its deep and often long-term commitment of researchers to their respective field(s) including multiple actors, is essential to comprehensively grasp the affective economy of removal. Microalgae can promote antibiotic removal, which has attracted growing attention. However, its synergistic removal performance with bacteria in antibiotic pollutants is still poorly understood. In this study, firstly, we selected two green algae (Dictyosphaerium sp. and Chlorella sp.) and exposed them to Enrofloxacin (ENR) to observe their extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) concentration dynamic and the removal of antibiotics. Secondly, EPS was extracted and added to in situ lake water (no algae) to investigate its combined effect with bacteria. The results indicate that both Dictyosphaerium sp. and Chlorella sp. exhibited high tolerance to ENR stress. When the biomass of microalgae was low, ENR could significantly stimulate algae to produce EPS. The removal rates of Dictyosphaerium sp. and Chlorella sp. were 15.8% and 10.5%, respectively. The addition of EPS can both alter the microbial community structure in the lake water and promote the removal of ENR. The LEfSe analysis showed that there were significant differences in the microbial marker taxa, which promoted the increase of special functional bacteria for decomposing ENR, between the EPS-added group and the control group. The EPS of Dictyosphaerium sp. increased the abundance of Moraxellaceae and Spirosomaceae, while the EPS of Chlorella sp. increased the abundance of Sphingomonadaceae and Microbacteriaceae. Under the synergistic effect, Chlorella sp. achieved a maximum removal rate of 24.2%, while Dictyosphaerium sp. achieved a maximum removal rate of 28.9%. Our study provides new insights into the removal performance and mechanism of antibiotics by freshwater microalgae in water bodies and contribute to the development of more effective water treatment strategies. In the process of fuel utilization, traditional combustion technologies result in the conversion of nitrogen elements in fuels into nitrogen oxides, which are released into the atmosphere, posing serious threats to the environment and human health. The chemical looping process (CLP) is an effective technology for reducing nitrogen-containing (N-containing) pollutants during fuel utilization. During the CLP, the oxygen carrier (OC) can oxidize nitrogen oxide precursors (NH3 and HCN) released from the fuel to N2, while the reduced OC can reduce nitrogen oxides to N2. The achievement of efficient nitrogen pollutant removal relies on the development of highly active oxygen carriers (OCs). This review summarizes the recent progress in the removal of nitrogen pollutants within chemical looping processes (CLPs). It delineates the formation pathways of N-containing pollutants (NH3, HCN, NO, NO2 and N2O) and highlights the performance of various OCs. The influence of reaction conditions and feedstock characteristics is also discussed. Ni-based OCs have demonstrated superior performance in the removal of N-containing pollutants, exhibiting strong oxidation capabilities and excellent catalytic properties. Moreover, iron ore, as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly feedstock, holds promise for wide-scale application. Future research should focus on further optimizing OCs strategies and refining reaction conditions to achieve more efficient and economical N-containing pollutant removal, thereby fostering the widespread application of chemical looping technology in the energy sector.
