This study addresses the challenge of calculating the perimeter of irregular shapes, particularly for individuals without a strong mathematical background. The study involves developing a user-friendly simulator, PeriTech that simplifies the process of perimeter calculation by providing a visually intuitive interface. This study focuses on calculating the perimeter of irregular shape objects such as piper betle leaf. The method involves developing a mathematical equation that corresponds to the boundary of the piper betle leaf to calculate the perimeter of the leaf. Newton Forward Divided Difference Interpolation is used to find a polynomial equation from the data points. With this approach, an object’s form may be divided into basic and more simple curve shapes, each of which’s arc length can be calculated, and combine the arc lengths to determine the estimated perimeter.

We test an approach to modelling the car driver behaviour during simulated lane changing tasks, aiming to obtain a sufficiently precise model in the simplest possible form, namely, with a small number of parameters. Various applications of such models are available in the literature. Based on a recent review of the research to date, the cybernetic single-loop transfer function models employing McRuer’s theory are applied. The purpose of the presented method is to evaluate the optimal structure of the transfer function via cross-validation as a technique known from machine learning. The experiments utilize a driving simulator with in-house developed software; this configuration facilitates acquiring the data at the desired sampling frequency and in a manner that ensures the repeatability of the test process scenarios. Using the cross-validation results, we evaluate the second-order model with a derivative state and a reaction delay component as an optimal structure for approximating the measured data, which originated from a set of measurements on 92 active drivers. Even though more complex driving tasks could require high-order models, driver’s control action during our specific experiment is described through only four parameters. The parameters are jointly determined by the current driver’s mental state and the testing conditions defined in our scenario. Since the parameters are related to his/her dynamical behaviour, they allow easier mutual comparison of the drivers than complex models with many parameters. The results are verified via establishing a relationship to the multi-loop model presented in the recent literature. The larger dataset enables evaluating the confidence intervals of the drivers’ parameters which is inconvenient with 4 to 10 drivers commonly presented in the relevant sources.

Ensuring reliable data transmission in all Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) segments is paramount in modern vehicular communications. Vehicular operations face unpredictable network conditions which affect routing protocol adaptiveness. Several solutions have addressed those challenges, but each has noted shortcomings. This work proposes a centralised-controller multi-agent (CCMA) algorithm based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) principles, to enhance VANET performance using Reinforcement Learning (RL). This algorithm is trained and validated with a simulation environment modelling the network nodes, routing protocols and buffer schedules. It optimally deploys DTN routing protocols (Spray and Wait, Epidemic, and PRoPHETv2) and buffer schedules (Random, Defer, Earliest Deadline First, First In First Out, Large/smallest bundle first) based on network state information (that is; traffic pattern, buffer size variance, node and link uptime, bundle Time To Live (TTL), link loss and capacity). These are implemented in three environment types; Advanced Technological Regions, Limited Resource Regions and Opportunistic Communication Regions. The study assesses the performance of the multi-protocol approach using metrics: TTL, buffer management,link quality, delivery ratio, Latency and overhead scores for optimal network performance. Comparative analysis with single-protocol VANETs (simulated using the Opportunistic Network Environment (ONE)), demonstrate an improved performance of the proposed algorithm in all VANET scenarios.

Objective: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor is one of the most common everyday urological procedures. This kind of surgery demands a set of skills that need training and experience. In this review, we aimed to investigate the current literature to find out if simulators, phantoms, and other training models could be used as a tool for teaching urologists. Methods: A systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement and the recommendations of the European Association of Urology guidelines for conducting systematic reviews. Fifteen out of 932 studies met our inclusion criteria and are presented in the current review. Results: The UroTrainer (Karl Storz GmbH, Tuttlingen, Germany), a virtual reality training simulator, achieved positive feedback and an excellent face and construct validity by the participants. The inspection of bladder mucosa, blood loss, tumor resection, and procedural time was improved after the training, especially for inexperienced urologists and medical students. The construct validity of UroSim® (VirtaMed, Zurich, Switzerland) was established. SIMBLA simulator (Samed GmbH, Dresden, Germany) was found to be a realistic and useful tool by experts and urologists with intermediate experience. The test objective competency model based on SIMBLA simulator could be used for evaluating urologists. The porcine model of the Asian Urological Surgery Training and Education Group also received positive feedback by the participants that tried it. The Simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning Initiative Project had an extraordinary face and content validity, and 60% of participants would like to use the simulators in the future. The 5-day multimodal training curriculum “Boot Camp” in the United Kingdom achieved an increase of the level of confidence of the participants that lasted months after the project. Conclusion: Simulators and courses or curricula based on a simulator training could be a valuable learning tool for any surgeon, and there is no doubt that they should be a part of every urologist's technical education.

To perform a neutronic analysis of the reactor core, it is necessary to develop nuclear computing software to produce multi-group constants and numerical solutions to the multi-group neutron diffusion equation. For this purpose, some methods are used in nuclear calculation codes that, in addition to the necessary accuracy of cost and computing time, are optimal. This paper discusses the average current nodal expansion method as well as higher orders of flux expansion. Then, the discretization of the neutron diffusion equation with ACNEM is shown, which has the ability to calculate in optimum time and with good accuracy. The discretization of the Forward and Adjoint neutron diffusion equation is performed for two-dimensional hexagonal geometry in two energy groups and then the SH3-ACNEM reactor core simulator is developed. To verify; the calculations for the IAEA-2D reactor core are performed and compared with valid references. It results that the computational error improves from 11.36% to 3.52% by increasing the flux expansion order from quadratic polynomials to five.

Abstract Background Simulation-based education enhances fundamental and clinical knowledge, procedural abilities, teamwork, and communication skills, as well as quality of care and patient safety. Due to excessive clinical loads and a lack of physicians, even classic teaching methods like bedside instruction are constrained in low-income settings. Thus, this study aimed to ascertain if simulation-based cesarean section education successfully raises non-physician clinician midwives’ competency in Ethiopia. Methods A quasi-experimental study design triangulated with a qualitative design was implemented. Sixty Masters Clinical Midwifery students (29 intervention and 31 control) were taken in 5 universities. Three questionnaires (knowledge, confidence levels, and skills) were used. Abstract Driven by the successful service model and growing demand, cloud computing has evolved from a moderate-sized data center consisting of homogeneous resources to a heterogeneous hyper-scale computing ecosystem. This evolution has made the modern cloud environment increasingly complex. Large-scale empirical studies of essential concepts such as resource allocation, virtual machine migration, and operational cost reduction have typically been conducted using simulations. This paper presents an agent-based cloud simulation model for resource management. The focus is on how service placement strategies, service migration, and server consolidation affect the overall performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous clouds, in terms of energy consumption, resource utilization, and violation of service-level agreements. The main cloud elements are modeled as autonomous agents whose properties are encapsulated. The complex relationships between components are realized through asynchronous agent-to-agent interactions. Operating states and statistics are displayed in real time. In the evaluation, the efficiency of the simulator is studied empirically. The performance of various resource management algorithms is assessed using statistical methods, and the accuracy of server energy consumption models is examined. The results show that agent-based models can accurately reflect cloud status at a fine-grained level.

In this article, the development of a software system—a simulator for testing software systems using a binary protocol—is proposed. The purpose of the development is to achieve full testing of a wide class of software systems. They are directly related to the management of hardware systems, with which communication is based on a binary protocol. The developed simulator allows different types of messages to be simulated during real communication. In this way, it is possible to check how a given program system would react to correct and incorrect messages in the communication stage. This article presents a GUI system developed in the standard C++ programming language and the Qt platform, which makes it platform-independent. The system provides the ability to select preset commands via an external file or enter/correct commands in real-time. The commands may be different depending on the integration scope of the binary protocol. The connection between the developed simulator and the tested system is through RS 232 interface. Configuring settings and testing binary protocols through the developed application becomes fast and intuitive.

In many industries, there is a continuous high demand for skilled welders. Practical training in welding is cost- and time-intensive. To reduce this problem, VR welding simulators have been developed in recent years. They vary in terms of portability, hardware and software components, and functionalities. In this paper, a VR simulator to support practical training in MIG/MAG welding, as a highly portable and affordable solution, is presented. Its only hardware components are an off-the-shelf mobile VR set, a welding torch, and welding coupons that are manufactured using the FDM 3D printing method. The software part is accessed and used via an Internet browser. An important feature of the simulator is also the possibility to differ immersion in the working environment while carrying out virtual welding, which makes the solution also usable for users prone to cybersickness. The VR welding simulator was refined based on feedback obtained during pilot tests. The test participants found it a useful aid for welders’ training, which justifies further work on its development and integration into the teaching of welding in educational and training units.

Background: Driving requires a series of cognitive abilities, many of which are affected by age and medical conditions. The psychosocial importance of continued driving ushers the need for valid measurements in fitness-to-drive assessments. A driving simulator test could prove useful in these assessments, having greater face validity than other off-road tests and being more costeffective and safer than ordinary on-road testing. The aim of this study was to validate a driving simulator test for assessment of cognitive ability in fitness-todrive assessments. Methods: The study included 67 healthy participants. Internal consistency of the simulator subtests was estimated. A correlation analysis between results on the simulator and the cognitive tests Trail Making Test (TMT) A and B and the Useful field of View test (UFOV) and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Finally, a comparison of results between age groups (>65 years) and (<65 years) was done. Results: Results showed good internal consistency. Significant and moderate correlations were found for all reaction time in the simulator's subtests and UFOV 3, and all but two with TMT A. Lane positioning in the simulator showed significant and low to moderate correlations with UFOV 3 in all subtests. Reaction time and Double reaction time on subtest 3 were significantly correlated with UFOV 2 and UFOV 3 and TMT A, respectively. Test on Centerline (position) in subtest 3 as dependent variable was significantly correlated with UFOV 3. Significant means differences and large effect sizes between the age groups were found for all reaction time and lane positioning tests. Conclusion: The findings of concurrent validity, especially with TMT A and UFOV 3 and its sensitivity for age-related differences, indicate potential for the simulator to be used as a complement in fitness-to-drive assessments. This paper provides an analysis of the values of safety distance between the two moving vehicles, based on the parameters of the behaviour of young drivers. The main objective of this research was to determine the driver's response time for braking manoeuvre (BRT) in car-following situations. The test results were used to verify certain recommendations for the vehicle driving parameters, the principles of driver's performance to increase road traffic safety, etc. The driver's response times, determined during the testing in the simulator, were used to assess the recommended values of the safe following distance under different road conditions and various ways of driver behaviour. Purpose: To develop and validate a low-cost homemade bench-top training model to facilitate retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) training. Methods: The RIRS training model (G-Model) was developed using a surgical glove and a recycled ureter access sheath. Fifteen participants including 10 residents and 5 urologists were enrolled. Designed training curriculum for residents was carried out. Face validity, content validity, construct validity and criterion validity evaluation of the G-Model were carried out. Results: The global score of face and content validity was 4.15 ± 0.53 and 4.65 ± 0.29, respectively. For construct validity, the overall modified global rating scale (mGRS) score was significantly improved [12.5 (5.25) vs. 24.0 (5.25), p = 0.004], and the total task time was significantly shortened (39.5 ± 4.48 min vs. 24.1 ± 3.81 min, p < 0.001) within residents after G-Model training. The baseline mGRS score and total task time of residents were poorer than those of urologists [12.5 (5.25) vs. 32.0 (1.00), p < 0.001; 39.5 ± 4.48 min vs. 16.0 ± 1.58 min, p < 0.001]. Spearman correlation analysis revealed strong correlations between residents’ G-Model and real patient performance. Conclusion: The current study presented a valid low-cost easily accessible RIRS bench-top training model which could facilitate skill acquisition and translate to real-life scenario. Introduction: Transvenous temporary pacemaker (TvTP) implantation is a critical procedure often performed under time limitations, playing a crucial role in patient survival. However, the amount of training provided for resident cardiologists is variable, due to the availability of patients. Thus, the use of simulators for this cardiologic procedure could be used as training tools. Objective: The present study aimed to develop a simulator system for TvTP implantation based on electrograms, called ETTIS (Electrogram‐guided Transvenous Temporary‐pacemaker Implantation Simulator), and to evaluate its educational potential and cardiology residents' perceived learning efficacy as a training tool. Methodology: The development of the ETTIS involved three stages: (1) Adaptation of an anatomical mannequin; (2) Design and manufacture of electronic circuits and software capable of identifying the catheter contact site within the heart chambers and reproducing electrograms in both surfaces (mode‐on) and intracavitary (mode‐off); (3) To evaluate its educational potential, a modified Likert questionnaire was administered to nine cardiology experts. Additionally, to evaluate the perceived learning efficacy, another modified Likert questionnaire was given to six cardiology residents both before and after training with the ETTIS. Descriptive statistics with measures of position and dispersion were employed, and the weighted Kappa test was used for agreement analysis. Results: A high rate of acceptance (over 90%) was found among experts who evaluated the ETTIS. The cardiology residents showed significant self‐perceived learning gains, as evidenced by a lack of agreement between their responses to a questionnaire before and after training. Conclusion: The ETTIS is a promising tool for medical training, displaying both educational potential and efficacy. It has been shown to be effective in learning a variety of skills, including cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology. Background: The spatial accuracy of microsurgical manipulations is one of the critical factors in successful surgical interventions. The purpose of this study was to create a low-cost, high-fidelity, and easy-to-use simulator for microsurgical skills training, which can be made by residents themselves at home. Methods: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we created a device for spatial accuracy microsurgical skills training and implemented it in our resident's training program. We propose a design for basic and advanced models. The simulator consisted of commonly available products. Results: A low-cost, durable, and high-fidelity basic model has been developed at a total cost of <10 dollars per unit. The model allows trainees to practice the critical microsurgical skills of tool targeting in a home-based setting. Conclusion: The developed device can be assembled at an affordable price using commercially available materials. Modern ships are complex energy systems containing a large number of different elements. Each of these elements is simulated separately. Since all these models form a single system (ship), they are interdependent. The operating modes of some systems influence others, but at the same time, the work of all the systems should be aimed at fulfilling the basic functions of the ship. The work proposes a methodological approach to combining various systems of ships into a single complex model. This model allows combining models of ship systems of various levels (microlevel, macrolevel, metalevel, megalevel). The work provides examples of models of such multi-level energy systems. These are energy systems composed of an electric generator, a diesel engine, a propeller shaft, and algorithms used for operating the common parts of the ship's electric power system and a piston wear process. Analytical, structural, numerical, and object-oriented models were made for these objects. Each of these particular models describes a limited class of problems, has characteristic properties, and a mathematical structure. The work shows how particular models can be interconnected using a set-theoretic description. Particular models are combined into macrolevel models, whose output parameters are quantities that are by no means related. The macrolevel models are interrelated using control models. Control models belong to the metalevel and allow for assigning settings and response thresholds to algorithms used in automation systems. P < 0.05 was used for statistical significance. A difference-in-difference with a 95% confidence level was employed to control the potential confounders for knowledge and self-confidence. Multiple linear regression was fitted to identify the independent effect of simulation-based education interventions while controlling for other variables. Thematic analysis was performed using MAXQDA 2020. Result: The age of the respondents varies from 24 to 34 years, with the control group's mean age being 28.8 (± 2.3) years and the intervention group's mean age being 27.2 (± 2.01) years. The intervention and control groups' pre-intervention and post-intervention knowledge scores showed a statistically significant difference. There was a substantial increase in self-confidence mean scores in both the intervention and control groups and between the pre-intervention and post-intervention periods in both the intervention and control groups. Furthermore, there was a substantial improvement in cesarean section skills in the intervention group as compared to the control group (59.6 (3.3) vs. 51.5 (4.8). The qualitative findings supported these. Conclusions: The study showed that simulation-based education improved students' procedural knowledge, self-confidence, and skills. Amniocentesis is the most performed invasive prenatal diagnostic procedure. Learning the procedure is difficult for the learner, the teacher and the patient because of the risks inherent to this technique and the anxiety generated by the procedure. The objective of this work was to evaluate a theoretical and practical amniocentesis training workshop using a simulator. We were inspired by Pierre Jean's precepts for the planning of a medical training. We then carried out the pedagogical session with the gynecology residents of our Regional University Hospital, a type 3 maternity hospital in France. We evaluated the theoretical learning through a questionnaire before and after the training and then the practical session on a home-made simulator. The satisfaction of the participants was assessed by a questionnaire at the end of the session. Fifteen learners, from the first to the last semester of internship, participated in the training. The median score of the pre-training questionnaire ("pre-test" questionnaire) was 3.3 out of 10 (min = 1, max = 6) and that of the post-training questionnaire ("post-test" questionnaire) was 7.9 out of 10 (min = 6, max = 9). The post-training scores were significantly higher (p < 0.0007). The average score for the practical training was 30.5 out of 40 (24–36). 93 % of the learners were fully satisfied with the theoretical training and 100 % stated that they had improved their technical skills. The residents in our department expressed a need for training in this invasive procedure of antenatal diagnosis. Vein blood sampling is a method of mass blood sampling that involves drawing blood from a vein for blood type discrimination, confirmation of various physiological indicators, disease diagnosis, etc.; it is the most commonly used blood sampling method. An important aspect of vein blood sampling is the search for the exact location of the vein for insertion of the syringe to draw blood. This is influenced by obesity as well as skin and blood vessel conditions in the patient and the experience of the clinical technologist, nurse, and resident who performs the blood sampling. Frequent practice is required to effectively perform blood sampling techniques. However, due to the many limitations of the practice room or laboratory, there is a problem of using only a limited environment and model for clinical practice. As a result, many medical educational institutions have situations in which only fragmentary clinical practices are performed, and it is difficult to practice many blood sampling skills, so they do not provide enough experience to understand the actual skill field. In this paper, we propose a virtual-reality-based vein blood sampling simulator that allows the practice of blood sampling techniques without limitation. The proposed vein blood sampling simulator can operate a 3D model related to vein blood sampling using an HMD controller and a haptic device in a virtual space for vein blood sampling practice by wearing an HMD (head-mounted display). Vein blood sampling can also be practiced through interaction with the patient 3D model. In addition, the effectiveness of a simulator developed for dental students was verified, and as a result of the verification, the potential of the proposed vein blood sampling simulator was confirmed. Quadcopters are a type of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that are kept aloft by four rotors. They are gaining increasing popularity for a variety of applications. However, quadcopters can be difficult to control and are susceptible to disturbances such as wind gusts. In this paper, we present a method for modelling, controlling, and simulating a quadcopter. The complete mathematical dynamics of quadcopter motion is obtained using Newton-Euler formalism. Stabilisation and trajectory tracking of the quadcopter are achieved by designing a cascade control scheme with nonlinear PID controllers and linear PD controllers. The nonlinear PID controllers in the inner loop stabilise the attitude of the quadcopter, while the linear PD controllers in the outer loop produce the desired references of the inner loop. The nonlinear PID controllers use error scaling in the integral action to improve the stability and performance of the closed-loop system. Based on the nonlinear model and control laws derived in this work, a graphical user interface (GUI) simulator is developed in terms of combining visualisation with animation features. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated through a set of simulation works on the nonlinear mathematical model. The results show that the quadrotor reaches the desired position within 4 s and effectively stabilises at the appropriate time. Background: Collecting cytology samples and making simple diagnoses are skills taught in veterinary universities, mostly in a passive way. Simulators enhance practical skills learning, increasing student engagement through immersive activities. These strategies have not been carefully assessed in veterinary cytology. Objectives: This study aimed to describe a simulator developed for training cytology sample collection methods and assess the utility of an immersive simulation strategy to learn and practice the collection of cytology samples. Methods: A flipped classroom with a station design was followed. Students first watched video tutorials on sampling collection, listened to brief cases' clinical histories, and moved to immersive simulator stations. There, they practiced imprints, swabs, and fine‐needle aspiration (FNA). Microscopic observation of the material was available through augmented reality tools. Students were evaluated by Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) tools on their ability to perform FNA on stuffed animal models. Students answered two questionnaires addressing their learning outcomes. Results: Second‐ and third‐year students from two centers (n = 129) practiced cytologic collection methods in simulators which significantly changed their willingness to perform FNA in live animals after the class activities. OSCE pass rates over 90% were obtained for most steps of FNA, and students rated the activity as essential/very relevant for learning. Conclusions: Immersive simulation strategies were effective at increasing student comfort with cytologic sampling techniques. This approach should be included in the veterinary curriculum as it can increase the quality of cytology samples and could potentially improve the cytologic diagnosis of a submitted sample. Background: Anatomy embraces various fields and is regarded as the foundation of medical sciences due to its broad clinical applications, particularly in surgery. However, teaching this subject, particularly in practical units, poses challenges, and insufficient anatomical knowledge and errors in anatomy-related decisions by physicians can lead to avoidable deaths and medical errors. This study aimed to design and develop an electronic moulage (EM) for teaching upper limb anatomy, specifically focusing on the muscles and brachial plexus (BP). Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design. Electronic moulage has been implemented in a manner that allows independent structures within a compartment to be taught without the presence of a teacher or anatomical atlases and enables learners to comprehend the anatomical features and relationships of structures in both combined and isolated modes, even without prior knowledge of anatomical theory specific to that compartment. The EM incorporates a skeletal compartment system and a BP component, utilizing audio and visual systems to deliver a comprehensive educational experience. The effectiveness of the EM was evaluated by experts in anatomy and medical science students, comparing it to other teaching methods. Four groups of undergraduate medical radiology students with no prior instruction in upper limb anatomy participated in the study. Each group was assigned to a different training method, including lecture-based education, digital-based education with a simulator, cadaver-based education, and EM-based education. Results: After assessing the results using educational and motivational indicators, it was determined that the EM demonstrated innovative potential and could enhance motivation and the quality of anatomy education. Comparing the post-test scores of the EM-based education group to the other groups revealed significantly higher scores in the EM-based group. This finding indicates that the EM has the potential to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of anatomy education, addressing the limitations of other teaching methods. Conclusions: The developed EM presents a promising solution for enhancing anatomy education, particularly in the context of upper limb anatomy. Driven by the successful service model and growing demand, cloud computing has evolved from a moderate-sized data center consisting of homogeneous resources to a heterogeneous hyper-scale computing ecosystem. This evolution has made the modern cloud environment increasingly complex. Large-scale empirical studies of essential concepts such as resource allocation, virtual machine migration, and operational cost reduction have typically been conducted using simulations. This paper presents an agent-based cloud simulation model for resource management. The focus is on how service placement strategies, service migration, and server consolidation affect the overall performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous clouds, in terms of energy consumption, resource utilization, and violation of service-level agreements. The main cloud elements are modeled as autonomous agents whose properties are encapsulated. The complex relationships between components are realized through asynchronous agent-to-agent interactions. Operating states and statistics are displayed in real time. In the evaluation, the efficiency of the simulator is studied empirically. The performance of various resource management algorithms is assessed using statistical methods, and the accuracy of server energy consumption models is examined. Individuals with impaired mobility often require assistance for getting around. The skilled use of a manual wheelchair (MW) is required in order to gain independence while preventing injuries. Training in a virtual reality (VR) setting allows for safe practice of MW skills in a wide range of environments. We developed a low-cost MW simulator which includes visual and haptic feedback. Our objectives were to assess the usability and fidelity of the VR simulator, by clinicians and expert MW users, and to determine whether the addition of haptic feedback would positively improve the user's experience. This mixed method study investigated the sense of presence, overall experience and ease of use of the experience in six MW users, as well as five clinicians (wheeled mobility experts) who practiced in the simulator. Participants reported a positive perception of usefulness, sense of presence, and immersion during the MiWe simulator experience. The addition of haptic feedback to the simulator significantly enhanced fidelity of the overall experience, compared to the no-feedback condition. Our low-cost simulator was well perceived by clinicians and MW users and was considered as a potentially useful tool to complement MW skill training. We developed a low-cost, virtual reality simulator with visual and haptic feedback, for the practice of manual wheelchair skills. Expert clinicians and wheelchair users reported a positive experience after practicing in the wheelchair simulator, in terms of presence, realism and usability. Logging equipment operators traditionally learn the skills required for their job through hands-on training using a real machine in the forest. New developments in simulator technology enable operators to learn and practice operating logging equipment in a virtual setting. This study presents a summary of controlled experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of simulator training compared to machine training for logging equipment operators in terms of performance and cost effectiveness. Sixteen participants were trained on simulated or real logging machinery for 26 hours each. We compared the performance of simulator-trained participants to machine-trained participants by testing operators on real equipment in the forest. No significant differences were found in overall performance between simulator-trained and machine-trained operators; however, machine-trained students showed greater improvement than simulator-trained students on more complex equipment. A cost analysis of simulator vs. machine training found that contractors should expect to save 36–40% by sending their students to an external training facility using simulator-based training rather than conducting internal, machine-based training. Contractors considering the purchase of a simulator for in-house training would need to use their simulator for around 130 hours each year to break-even on the yearly average costs of owning and operating the simulator. Background: A personal history of video gaming has been associated with improved laparoscopic skills acquisition in some but not all studies. The impact of playing a musical instrument on laparoscopic or robotic proficiency is less investigated. Methods: This study evaluates the impact of video gaming, playing a musical instrument, and other demographic parameters on robotic simulator proficiency in a cohort of 27 participants. Candidates performed 3 standardized exercises on a virtual reality robotic training platform, resulting in a proficiency score. After completing a detailed survey, participants repeated the standardized exercises to obtain a basic learning curve. Gaming history, playing a musical instrument, surgical experience, and demographic parameters were correlated with overall robotic proficiency and improvement during the experimental session. Results: Participants with previous gaming history had 33 % higher overall robotic performance scores (p = 0.02). There was no difference in performance between surgical trainees and attending physicians with high volume laparoscopic surgery experience (average of 77 laparoscopic procedures). In this small cohort, playing an instrument had no influence overall (p = 0.2), but we found a trend towards increased proficiency in those playing the piano, yielding 30 % higher scores (p = 0.14). Participants performed up to 22 % better in the second run of the ''Suture Sponge'' exercises (p = 0.08), indicating a steep learning curve of simulated robotic surgery. Conclusions: A history of video gaming and playing the piano is associated with improved performance on a virtual-reality robotic surgical simulator. The steep learning curve underlines the benefit of virtual robotic surgical training before performing robotic procedures on patients.

Background. The object of the study is specialized computing systems containing a quantum coprocessor. The subject of the study is the process of organizing calculations in specialized computing systems, taking into account the interaction of quantum and classical computers. The purpose of the work is to evaluate the effectiveness of solving computationally complex problems using specialized computing systems with a quantum coprocessor by developing a software model of a computing complex that includes a quantum coprocessor. Materials and methods. Studies of the process of organizing calculations in specialized computing systems, taking into account the interaction of quantum and classical computers, were carried out using simulation and experimental methods. Results. A software model has been developed. The software model of the computing complex, which includes a quantum coprocessor, is made in the form of a set of experimental programs and placed on a modeling stand based on the Russian hardware and software platform “Elbrus”. The developed software package consists of three parts: interface, computing and web applications. Conclusions. Using the developed software model placed on the simulation stand, estimates of the efficiency of solving a number of problems using a quantum coprocessor were obtained. It is shown that for some tasks the acceleration obtained using a quantum coprocessor can reach exponential levels.

Spiking neural network simulations are a central tool in Computational Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, and Neuromorphic Engineering research. A broad range of simulators and software frameworks for such simulations exist with different target application areas. Among these, PymoNNto is a recent Python-based toolbox for spiking neural network simulations that emphasizes the embedding of custom code in a modular and flexible way. While PymoNNto already supports GPU implementations, its backend relies on NumPy operations. Here we introduce PymoNNtorch, which is natively implemented with PyTorch while retaining PymoNNto's modular design. Furthermore, we demonstrate how changes to the implementations of common network operations in combination with PymoNNtorch's native GPU support can offer speed-up over conventional simulators like NEST, ANNarchy, and Brian 2 in certain situations. Overall, we show how PymoNNto's modular and flexible design in combination with PymoNNtorch's GPU acceleration and optimized indexing operations facilitate research and development of spiking neural networks in the Python programming language.

Introduction. The skill of puncture of the kidney pelvicalyceal system is one of the basic urological skills, as it is used for various surgical interventions. There are different training models, from laboratory animals to virtual reality simulators.Objective. To evaluate a non-biological model of the pelvicalyceal system puncture simulator UroATOM (“Alfa-Rhythm”, Russian Federation) and to compare it with a virtual reality simulator PERC MentorTM (“Simbionix”, Beit Golan, Israel).Materials & methods. The results of fluoroscopic guided puncture training were analyzed among 50 physicians. The specialists were divided into two equal groups by experience: group 1 — beginners, group 2 — experienced urologists. In phase 1, both simulators were evaluated by the physicians using Likert questionnaires. In phase 2, the puncture results in beginners were evaluated before and after the UroATOM simulator practise.Results. Comparing the indices of both simulators showed that UroATOM was rated as more convenient to use (p = 0.0001) and cheaper (p < 0.0001). The analysis of the puncture performance by "beginners" before and after UroATOM training revealed a statistically significant improvement in the performance. The puncture time index improved by 79 seconds. The index of fluoroscopy duration decreased by 40.9 seconds. The number of puncture attempts decreased by 1.4 times. The amount of contrast decreased by 5.4 ml.Conclusions. The UroATOM simulator is effective for training young specialists in fluoroscopy-guided renal cavity puncture.

Cerebral aneurysms are common lesions in the general population and are increasingly treated by endovascular procedures. Training of these methods not only improves the learning period of physicians but also increases patient safety. However, the use of traditional medical training methods such as training in living animal models is decreasing due to high costs and ethical issues, so computer simulations and 3D-printed phantoms are being used instead. A more realistic simulation requires pulsatile blood flow that can be customized and has body temperature. Current simulators that use 3D-printed phantoms are mainly used under X-Ray in an angiography intervention room, therefore a dual-use simulator that is easy to transport and can be used also without X-Ray is desirable. Either it could be used traditionally in an angiography intervention room or externally in any regular room with an image simulation according to rotational angiography. In this work, a prototype for blood flow simulation is presented as a first step towards such simulator and its application is demonstrated through different investigations. The fluid system is capable of simulating a given blood flow profile and the heating system can generate an accurate body temperature. The case can be easily integrated into a modular phantom system and is convenient to transport, although the weight could be further reduced.

Simulators have revolutionized medical education and training across various disciplines, offering unique advantages in skill acquisition and performance improvement. In the context of interventional radiation therapy (IRT), simulators have emerged as valuable tools for training healthcare professionals in these complex procedures. This narrative review summarized the available evidence on the use of simulators in IRT training, highlighting their impact on proficiency, engagement, and self-confidence as well as their benefits for medical physicists and radiation therapists. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, resulting in inclusion of 10 papers published since 2009, with 5 of them published since 2020. Publications originated from centers in USA, Ireland, Switzerland, Canada, and Japan, covering a range of IRT settings, including general, prostate, and cervical IRT. The review demonstrated that simulators provide a controlled and realistic environment for skill acquisition, allowing healthcare professionals to practice procedures, optimize image quality, and enhance technical proficiency. The use of simulators addressed the barriers associated with limited caseload and procedural complexity, ultimately contributing to improved education and IRT training. While cost considerations may exist, simulators offer long-term cost-effective solutions, balancing the potential benefits in improving educational outcomes and patient care. Overall, simulators play a crucial role in IRT training, enhancing the skills and competence of healthcare providers and improving access to quality IRT care worldwide. Future research should focus on evaluating the long-term impact of simulation-based training on clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, exploring different simulation models and training approaches, and addressing region-specific barriers to optimize the utilization of IRT.

scDesign2 is a transparent simulator that generates high-fidelity single-cell gene expression count data with gene correlations captured. This article shows how to download and install the scDesign2 R package, how to fit probabilistic models (one per cell type) to real data and simulate synthetic data from the fitted models, and how to use scDesign2 to guide experimental design and benchmark computational methods. Finally, a note is given about cell clustering as a preprocessing step before model fitting and data simulation.

Striving to increase the speed of rail vehicles and thus improve the comfort of traveling passengers at the same time, undertakes activities in the sphere of ensuring an appropriate level of safety of rail, passenger, and freight transport. One of the elements of activities in this area is the training of train drivers. Until recently, this training consisted of a theoretical and practical part on the vehicle, alongside an experienced train driver. Considering the increasing level of automation of railway traffic control systems and locomotive equipment, as well as training costs and requirements related to the introduction of TSI, it is becoming an increasingly common requirement to conduct practical training on railway vehicle traffic simulators, while the conditions in the simulator cabin and the trainee’s feelings should correspond to the actual driving conditions. A locomotive driving simulator is a system consisting of a cabin of a suitable type of locomotive or EMU, mapped in 1:1 scale, coupled with a motion excitation system and computer programs connected together forming the software of the cab visualization and dynamics system. The basic program simulating the dynamics and kinematics of the cabin’s motion is a program containing a motion dynamics model that generates signals forcing the movement of the exciters on which the cabin’s platform is mounted. The correct operation of the simulation model depends on the created mathematical model, which can be built in several ways. This article presents the issue of building a mathematical model describing the dynamics of the rail vehicle motion, which can then be used in the simulation model of the simulator cabin motion. Two ways of proceeding in the process of approaching the construction of a mathematical model of rail vehicle motion dynamics will be presented, with the possibility of later use in creating a simulation model of the motion of the locomotive simulator cabin. One of the possible routes was used in the past in the construction of the EP09 locomotive simulator.

Most accidents and serious incidents of commercial air transport helicopters occur during standard flight phases, whereby a main cause is pilots’ situational awareness. Enabling pilots to better assess their situational awareness can make an important contribution in reducing the risk of fatal accidents. One approach is to examine a pilot’s gaze behavior with the help of eye tracking. This paper reports the results of a case study with eye tracking measurements during real flight and simulator studies of a standard mission profile. The general gaze behavior is characterized by a dominant, external view, and the airspeed and altitude indicator as the most important flight instruments. A real-world applicability of gaze data obtained in the simulator could be shown.

Zolpidem is a widely prescribed hypnotic Z-drug used to treat short-term insomnia. However, a growing number of individuals intentionally overdose on these drugs. This study aimed to develop a predictive tool for physicians to assess patients with zolpidem overdose. A population pharmacokinetic (PK) model was established using digitized data obtained from twenty-three healthy volunteers after a single oral administration of zolpidem. Based on the final PK model, a web application was developed using open-source R packages such as rxode2, nonmem2rx, and shiny. The final model was a one-compartment model with first-order absorption and elimination with PK parameters, including clearance (CL, 16.9 L/h), absorption rate constant (Ka, 5.41 h−1), volume of distribution (Vd, 61.7 L), and lag time (ALAG, 0.394 h). Using the established population PK model in the current study, we developed a web application that enables users to simulate plasma zolpidem concentrations and visualize their profiles. This user-friendly web application may provide essential clinical information to physicians, ultimately helping in the management of patients with zolpidem intoxication.
