INTRODUCTION Perceptions, personal perspectives, and public awareness of e-cigarette information have a significant impact on e-cigarette smoking behavior, and provide comprehensive information that can help reduce interest in e-cigarette smoking and reduce the number of new smokers. This study aimed to investigate the perceptions towards e-cigarettes related to e-cigarette use and how that information related to people's use of them. METHODS The data for this cross-sectional study were collected via an online questionnaire. Thai nationals who were aged >18 years provided data between June 2021 and January 2022. Multivariable logistic regression and the chi-squared test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS There were 340 respondents, 76 e-cigarette users, and 264 non-e-cigarette users. Most of the perceptions of information that differed statistically significantly between e-cigarette users and non-e-cigarette users included information on regulations, products, health effects, and the effectiveness of smoking cessation. The association between factors and e-cigarette smoking behavior revealed that the perception of the product information and male gender were associated with e-cigarette smoking behavior (AOR=13.59; 95% CI: 2.35-78.60, and AOR=5.19; 95% CI: 2.87-9.40, respectively). Tobacco consumption in China remains the primary cause of preventable mortality, with Shanghai being particularly affected by issues related to secondhand smoke exposure. This study explores the role of the public service hotline 12345, a grassroots initiative in Shanghai, in capturing public sentiment and assessing the effectiveness of anti-smoking regulations. Our research aims to accurately and deeply understand the implementation and feedback of smoking control policies: by identifying high-frequency points and prominent issues in smoking control work based on the smoking control work order data received by the health hotline 12320. The results of this study will assist government enforcement agencies in improving smoking monitoring and clarify the direction for improving smoking control measures. Text-mining techniques were employed to analyze a dataset comprising 78011 call sheets, all related to tobacco control and collected from the hotline between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019. This methodological approach aims to uncover prevalent themes and sentiments in the public discourse on smoking and its regulation, as reflected in the hotline interactions. Our study identified hotspots and the issues of greatest concern to citizens. Additionally, it provided recommendations to enforcement agencies to enhance their capabilities, optimize the allocation of human resources for smoking control monitoring, reduce enforcement costs and support for anti-smoking campaigns, thereby contributing to more effective tobacco control policies in the region. INTRODUCTION Cigarette package inserts that describe quitting benefits and tips may promote cessation; however, research is needed to understand better their effects, including potentially enhancing the effects of pictorial health warning labels (PHWLs). METHODS A randomized trial with a 2x2 factorial design was conducted with adult smokers (n=356) assigned to either small text-only health warning labels (HWLs; control); inserts with cessation messages, and the small text-only HWLs (inserts-only); large PHWLs (PHWLs-only); both inserts and PHWLs (inserts + PHWLs). Participants received a 14-day supply of their preferred cigarettes with packs labeled to reflect their group. Upon finishing the trial, participants reported their past 14-day frequency of noticing, reading, thinking about smoking harms and cessation benefits, talking about labels, and forgoing cigarettes because of the labels. Ordered logistic models regressed these outcomes on labeling groups, and mediation analyses assessed whether attention (i.e. noticing, reading) to labels mediated effects of labeling exposure on other outcomes (i.e. thinking about harms/benefits, talking, forgoing). RESULTS The inserts + PHWLs group reported higher frequencies than the control group for all outcomes. Compared to the control group, both the inserts-only and PHWLs-only groups reported higher frequency of noticing (AOR=3.53 and 2.46, respectively) and reading labels (AOR=2.89 and 1.71), thinking about smoking risks because of the labels (AOR=1.93 and 1.82), and talking about labels (AOR=2.30 and 2.70). Participants in the inserts-only group also reported more frequent thinking about quitting benefits (AOR=1.98). Attention mediated all labeling effects except for the contrast between PHWLs only and control. CONCLUSIONS Compared to text-only HWLS, cigarette labeling that involves inserts, PHWLs, or both appears more effective at drawing attention to warnings, which mediated the effects on cessation-related psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. This study aimed to address the direct impact of split households on smoking behaviour. Three types of spilt households (sole migration, couple migration, and family migration) were incorporated to explore the concise effect of different split household forms. This study also examined factors that contributed to the narrowing gap in smoking prevalence between 2008 and 2018. Retrospective observational study. Data were obtained from the Rural Urban Migration (RUMiC-2009) and China Household Income Project (CHIP2018). Analyses were conducted using chi-squared tests/analysis of variance tests and multiple logit regression. The order probit model with sample selection was conducted to correct for selection bias. Fairlie decomposition was used to quantify the contribution of individual variables to the observed differences in smoking prevalence. Smoking prevalence for all migrants decreased by 5.79% between 2008 and 2018. The results in 2008 reveal the positive and significant contribution of couple migration (coefficient = −0.4608; 95% CI = [−0.6453, −0.2762]) and family migration (coefficient = −0.3705; 95% CI = [−0.5959, −0.1452]) on the reduction of smoking; the finding for family migration remained robust in 2018. Measurable factors partially explain the decline in smoking disparity. The migration of families, working in the construction and manufacturing industries, and educational attainment were the largest contributing factors to the declining gap in smoking prevalence. The increase in family migration and education, and decrease in the number of workers in the construction and manufacturing industries, contributed to a decrease in smoking prevalence. Public policies should target sole migrants, couple migrants, individuals with lower education levels, and those working in the construction and manufacturing industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy (MSDP) is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes in infants and children with potential lifelong consequences. Negative effects of MSDP on placental DNAmethylation (DNAm), placental structure, and function are well established. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to develop biomarkers of MSDP using DNAm measured in placentas (푁 =96), collected as part of the Vitamin C to Decrease the Effects of Smoking in Pregnancy on Infant Lung Function double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial conducted between 2012 and 2016. We also aimed to develop a digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the top ranking cytosine–guanine dinucleotide (CpG) so that large numbers of samples can be screened for exposure at low cost. METHODS: We compared the ability of four machine learning methods [logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, logistic elastic net regression, random forest, and gradient boosting machine] to classify MSDP based on placental DNAm signatures. We developed separate models using the complete EPIC array dataset and on the subset of probes also found on the 450K array so that models exist for both platforms. For comparison, we developed a model using CpGs previously associated with MSDP in placenta. For each final model, we used model coefficients and normalized beta values to calculate placental smoking index (PSI) scores for each sample. Final models were validated in two external datasets: the Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborn observational study, 푁 = 426; and the Rhode Island Children's Health Study, 푁 = 237. RESULTS: Logistic LASSO regression demonstrated the highest performance in cross-validation testing with the lowest number of input CpGs. Accuracy was greatest in external datasets when using models developed for the same platform. PSI scores in smokers only (푛 = 72) were moderately correlated with maternal plasma cotinine levels. One CpG (cg27402634), with the largest coefficient in two models, was measured accurately by digital PCR compared with measurement by EPIC array (푅² =0.98). DISCUSSION: To our knowledge, we have developed the first placental DNAm-based biomarkers of MSDP with broad utility to studies of prenatal disease origins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The objective is to estimate the importance of the decrease of smoking habits in Sweden for the occurrence of lung cancer. Methods The change in smoking habits in the general population was retrieved from surveys and on taxation of sale of cigarettes. We used data from the Swedish Cancer Register on incidence of lung cancer between 1970 and 2021, stratified for sex, age and cell type, and compared the occurrence overtime in ages between 40 and 84 years. Results The sale of cigarettes peaked in 1980 to 1800 cigarettes per person and decreased to 600 per person in 2021. The change in incidence rates of squamous cell cancer and other cell types varied over time, sex, and age in a pattern that partly seems to be explained by change in the prevalence of daily smokers. The incidence of adenocarcinoma was similar in men and women 1970–2021 and increased, e.g. for women and men 75–79 years of age from around 20 cases in early 1970s to around 120 cases per 100 000 person-years in the 2020s. Conclusions Our data indicate that the risk of lung cancer several years after smoking cessation is less favourable than previously studies have indicated. There is a similar increase in the incidence of adenocarcinoma in men and women which is hard to explain only with changing smoking habits. Community coalitions depend on their members to synergistically pool diverse resources, including knowledge and expertise, community connections and varied perspectives, to identify and implement strategies and make progress toward community health improvement. Several coalition theories suggest synergy is the key mechanism driving coalition effectiveness. The Community Coalition Action Theory (CCAT) asserts that synergy depends on how well coalitions engage their members and leverage their resources, which is influenced by coalition processes, member participation and satisfaction and benefits outweighing costs. The current study used mixed methods, including coalition member surveys (n  = 83) and semi-structured interviews with leaders and members (n  = 42), to examine the process of creating collaborative synergy in 14 community coalitions for smoke-free environments in Armenia and Georgia. Members, typically seven per coalition representing education, public health, health care and municipal administration sectors, spent an average of 16 hr/month on coalition-related work. Common benefits included making the community a better place to live and learning more about tobacco control. The greatest cost was attending meetings or events at inconvenient times. Members contributed various resources, including their connections and influence, skills and expertise and access to population groups and settings. Strong coalition processes, greater benefits and fewer costs of participation and satisfaction were correlated with leveraging of member resources, which in turn, was highly correlated with collaborative synergy. Consistent with CCAT, effective coalition processes created a positive climate where membership benefits outweighed costs, and members contributed their resources in a way that created collaborative synergy. In mines with intricate ventilation systems, effectively preventing, controlling, and rescuing conveyor belt fires present significant challenges. This study aims to explore the laws of airflow disturbance, heat transfer, and smoke diffusion in different scales (field-area-network). The objective is to develop a theory that explains fire stepwise evolution due to the interaction between ventilation and thermal driving force. A multi-scene, cross-scale strategy for controlling fire smoke is proposed, along with an approach to determine optimal escape routes for workers in the event of a fire. A complex 3D dynamic model is established to validate the effectiveness of this strategy, while the Ventfire module (Chasm Ventsim) is employed to simulate three fire scenarios and analyze the dynamic characteristics of smoke propagation during a disaster. The results indicate that the temperature of high-temperature smoke is more susceptible to the scale effect rather than the air quantity. As the smoke moves away from the fire source, its temperature rapidly decreases, converging with the airflow temperature. However, the air quantity significantly impacts the maximum smoke temperature at the fire source. The concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) and visibility follow a pattern similar to that of the development of the fire. During emergency evacuations, the length of escape routes increases by 1.5 times due to increased smoke concentrations and reduced visibility. By implementing strategies for smoke prevention and exhaust, alongside the design of well-planned escape routes, the efficiency of evacuations can be improved by 34.19%. Background: Digital technologies have positively impacted the availability and usability of clinical algorithms through the advancement in mobile health. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if a web-based algorithm designed to support the decision-making process of cancer care providers (CCPs) differentially impacted their self-reported self-efficacy and practices for providing smoking prevention and cessation services in Peru and Colombia. Methods: A simple decision-making tree algorithm was built in REDCap using information from an extensive review of the currently available smoking prevention and cessation resources. We employed a pre-post study design with a mixed-methods approach among 53 CCPs in Peru and Colombia for pilot-testing the web-based algorithm during a 3-month period. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the CCPs' self-efficacy and practices before and after using the web-based algorithm. The usability of the web-based algorithm was quantitatively measured with the system usability scale (SUS), as well as qualitatively through the analysis of four focus groups conducted among the participating CCPs. Results: The pre-post assessments indicated that the CCPs significantly improved their self-efficacy and practices toward smoking prevention and cessation services after using the web-based algorithm. The overall average SUS score obtained among study participants was 82.9 (± 9.33) [Peru 81.5; Colombia 84.1]. After completing the qualitative analysis of the focus groups transcripts, four themes emerged: limited resources currently available for smoking prevention and cessation in oncology settings, merits of the web-based algorithm, challenges with the web-based algorithm, and suggestions for improving this web-based decision-making tool. Conclusion: The web-based algorithm showed high usability and was well-received by the CCPs in Colombia and Peru, promoting a preliminary improvement in their smoking prevention and cessation self-efficacy and practices. Background.: To inform youth about e-cigarette use prevention, it is important to understand whether using e-cigarette products from certain brands is associated with youth's differential e-cigarette use patterns and willingness to quit e-cigarettes. Methods.: Data for this study come from the 2021 U.S. National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS). The sample was current (past-30-day) e-cigarette users (unweighted n = 1,436). We examined the associations between users' usual e-cigarette brands (Puff, Vuse, Smoke, JUUL, and others) and e-cigarette use patterns (use frequency, use with nicotine, use with flavors) and willingness to quit, controlling for covariates. Results.: In 2021, 25.6%, 9.7%, 8.1%, and 6.5% of users reported Puff, Vuse, Smok, and JUUL as their usual brands, respectively. Having Smok as a usual brand increased the odds of frequent e-cigarette use compared with other brands. Using Puff, Vuse, and Smok increased the odds of using e-cigarettes with nicotine. Using Puff and Smok increased the odds of using e-cigarettes with any flavors and fruit flavors, and using Smok and JUUL increased the odds of using mint flavors. Finally, using Vuse reduced the odds of having a willingness to quit e-cigarettes. Conclusion.: Puff products, which are likely to be used infrequently and with fruit flavors, were the most endorsed usual brand by youth users. Vuse and Smok brand users demonstrated problematic use patterns, including high-frequency use of nicotine and reduced willingness to quit. The high prevalence of using flavors, especially banned flavors (e.g., mint for JUUL products), suggests the need for tightened restrictions on youth's access to flavored e-cigarettes. Background: Unacceptably high levels of e-cigarette use among youth paired with growing research about the dangers of vaping demonstrate a critical need to develop interventions that educate young people to reject e-cigarette use and promote cessation for current users. Vaping: Know the Truth (VKT) is a free digital learning experience prioritizing middle and high school students that aims to improve students' knowledge about the dangers of using e-cigarettes and provide quitting resources for those who already vape. The current study was designed to evaluate whether students receiving the curriculum increased knowledge of the dangers of vaping. Methods: The outcome measures were calculated as the change in the number of correct responses from the pre- to post-module assessments among middle and high school students who completed four modules of the VKT curriculum (N = 103,522). Linear regression was performed to determine the association between the student's pre-module assessment score and the knowledge change score after completion of the four modules. Results: Students' e-cigarette knowledge significantly improved by an average of 3.24 points (SD = 3.54), following implementation of the VKT curriculum. This indicates that participants answered more than 3 additional questions correctly, on average, after the intervention. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate that the Vaping: Know the Truth curriculum is an effective resource for increasing knowledge among youth about the harms associated with e-cigarette use. Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of a media literacy‐based smoking prevention program based on Ajzen's theory of planned behavior in female adolescents. Methods: This quasi‐experimental study was conducted with female high school students aged 16–17 years in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The program provided eight sessions over 4 weeks. Quantitative data were collected before and after online surveys in an intervention (n = 21) and control (n = 21) groups, and analyzed using mixed analysis of variance. Qualitative data on participation experiences was collected by requesting the participants to answer open‐ended questions once a week during the intervention and performing co‐occurrence analysis of specific terms in the responses was conducted through text mining. Results: Although the program decreased smoking intention and increased smoking media literacy in the intervention group, there were no significant differences between the groups. Qualitative results obtained from the intervention group showed cognitive and behavioral changes in the perception of the harmfulness of e‐cigarettes in the media and the expression of a willingness to overcome the temptation to smoke. Conclusions: Our findings show that the enhancement of smoking media literacy, specifically by correcting misconceptions regarding e‐cigarettes promoted by the new media, contributes smoking prevention in female adolescents. Adverse childhood experiences are a factor that can have a broad impact on different dimensions of health in different eras. This research aimed to investigate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and smoking in children through a systematic review and meta‐analysis. Three databases, including PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus, were selected for manuscript searches. These three databases were searched until July 2022. This search was limited to English. For this study, the odds ratio or risk ratio and 95% confidence interval were extracted. The odds ratio pool was performed using the random‐effects method reported. An analysis was done based on the types of adverse childhood experiences and an analysis based on sex. The year of publication of the earliest and last publication included in this analysis was, respectively, 2003 and 2022. After screening the manuscripts, finally, 39 studies remained for this study. Adverse childhood experiences are associated with an increased risk of smoking in children [odds ratio 1.69; CI = 1.55–1.85; z = 11.80; p < 0.001; I2 = 92.6%]. Components of adverse childhood experiences, including emotional abuse, emotional neglect, physical abuse, physical maltreatment and physical neglect, were associated with increased smoking. The present study showed that adverse childhood experiences provide a context that increases the possibility of smoking in children. It is necessary to pay attention to the dimensions of health and behaviour in this group. Key Practitioner Messages: The evidence from this research showed that adverse childhood experiences are an important risk factor in increasing smoking.According to the evidence obtained from previous studies and their review in the current study, it is necessary that childhood conditions be screened, trained and given appropriate interventions to reduce their negative consequences on health in later periods of life. INTRODUCTION Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are promoted as less harmful than cigarettes; nonetheless, whether HTPs help smokers quit is uncertain. METHODS Data from 4067 Mexican adult smokers surveyed longitudinally every four months (November 2019-March 2021) were analyzed. Mixed-effects multinomial models regressed HTP use frequency (no use=reference; monthly; weekly; and daily use) on sociodemographics and tobacco/nicotine-related variables. Among participants who completed at least two surveys (n=2900) over four months, the duration of their longest smoking quit attempt (SQA) between surveys (SQAs: <30 days; >30 days; no SQA=reference) was regressed on HTP use frequency, and changes in the number of cigarettes smoked per day were regressed on HTP initiation between surveys, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Consistent predictors of all HTP use frequencies (monthly, weekly, or daily vs no use) were daily smoking >5 cigarettes (ARRR=1.69 [95% CI: 1.12-2.55], 1.88 [95% CI: 1.26-2.81] and 6.46 [95% CI: 3.33-12.52], respectively); e-cigarette use (ARRR =5.68 [95% CI: 3.38-9.53], 6.54 [95% CI: 4.06-10.55] and 2.59 [95% CI: 1.26-5.30]); lower HTP risk perceptions (ARRR=2.12 [95% CI: 1.50-30.00], 2.25 [95% CI: 1.63-3.10] and 2.00 [95% CI: 1.25-3.22]); exposure to HTP information inside (ARRR=2.13 [95% CI: 1.44-3.15], 2.13 [95% CI: 1.49-3.05] and 3.72 [95% CI: 2.28-6.09]) and outside stores (ARRR=2.36 [95% CI: 1.56-3.57], 2.32 [95% CI: 1.65-3.25] and 2.44 [95% CI: 1.41-4.24]) where tobacco is sold; having family (ARRR=2.46 [95% CI: 1.54-3.91], 2.90 [95% CI: 1.93-4.37] and 2.96 [95% CI: 1.52-5.77]) and friends (ARRR=5.78 [95% CI: 3.60-9.30], 4.98 [95% CI: 3.22-7.72] and 6.61 [95% CI: 2.91-15.01]) who use HTPs. HTP use frequency was not associated with quit attempts, except for monthly HTP use predicting SQAs lasting ≥30 days (ARRR=2.12 [95% CI: 1.17-3.85]). Initiation of HTP use was not associated with changes in smoking frequency. Limiting analysis to those who intend to quit smoking also yielded null results. CONCLUSIONS Among Mexican adult smokers, frequency of HTP use was mostly not associated with either cessation behaviors or changes in cigarette consumption, suggesting that HTPs have limited to no effectiveness for smoking cessation. INTRODUCTION While secondhand smoke exposure in outdoor spaces has been investigated before, no data on outdoor secondhand smoke exposure have been collected in the Netherlands. Such data could help policymakers gain support for smoke-free outdoor public spaces. METHODS Between May and November 2021, we visited 25 outdoor locations across the Netherlands. At each location, we conducted four measurements with smokers and one measurement without smokers. During each measurement, we counted the number of smokers present and we rated tobacco smell intensity on a five-point scale. Airborne nicotine and 3-ethenylpyridine (3-EP) data were collected through active sampling on thermal desorption tubes. The contents of these tubes were later analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Using linear mixed models, we investigated the association between levels of nicotine and the presence of smokers, the number of smokers, and the intensity of tobacco smell. We also investigated these association with levels of 3-EP. RESULTS Nicotine levels were higher when smokers were present (B=1.40; 95% CI: 0.69-2.11, p<0.001). For each additional smoker present, we measured higher levels of nicotine (B=0.23; 95% CI: 0.10-0.37, p=0.001). When the smell of tobacco smoke was noted to be stronger by the researchers, higher levels of nicotine were measured through sampling (B=0.85; 95% CI: 0.44-1.26, p<0.001). We found similar results for 3-EP levels. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that both nicotine and 3-EP are useful in quantifying levels of secondhand smoke in various outdoor locations. The level of nicotine exposure outdoors was positively associated with the number of smokers nearby. The intensity of the tobacco smell was also related to nicotine exposure: the stronger the smell of tobacco smoke, the more nicotine was measured in the air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION Food delivery drivers represent a rapidly growing occupational group in China in recent years. Their unique work patterns such as a complex work environment and high time-pressure may subject them to more severe tobacco use issues compared to other professions. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of tobacco use within this group and examine the underlying reasons behind it. METHODS A cross-sectional, multistage sampling design was conducted to select 1879 food delivery riders from Guangzhou and Shenzhen. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data from August to December 2022. Chi-squared analysis and binary logistic regression analysis, adjusted for factors including gender, education level, type of employment, alcohol use, job-related uncertainty stress, and emotional exhaustion, were used to explore the key factors associated with smoking among this occupational group. RESULTS Altogether, 65.5% of individuals in this sample were smokers, with 69.5% among males and 26.2% among females. Factors found to be significantly associated with smoking behavior were male sex (AOR=5.48; 95% CI: 3.74-8.02), education level of junior high school or lower (AOR=1.60; 95% CI: 1.21-2.11), education level of senior high school (AOR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.18-1.95), full-time job (AOR=1.39; 95% CI: 1.18-1.80), alcohol use (AOR=3.91; 95% CI: 3.14-4.87), moderate level of job-related uncertainty stress (AOR=0.58; 95% CI: 0.42-0.81), high level of emotional exhaustion (AOR=1.57; 95% CI: 1.17-2.10) and moderate level of emotional exhaustion (AOR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.00-2.30). CONCLUSIONS Demographic factors like gender, education level, job type, and substance use should be considered in designing smoking cessation campaigns for this group. Standardized ('plain') packaging is effective in reducing the appeal of cigarettes among young people. This study examined the impact of plain packaging and brand imagery on interest in trying e-cigarettes among youth. Experimental design. Two online experiments were conducted in February 2020 as part of the ITC Youth Tobacco & Vaping Survey, conducted with 13,624 16- to 19-year-olds in Canada, England, and the USA. In the between-group Experiment 1, participants were randomized to view a set of 3 e-cigarette brands, in either their original external packaging ('branded' condition) or standardized olive-green packaging ('standardized' condition), and asked to select the product they would be most interested in trying. The within-group Experiment 2 examined brand imagery directly on devices, including potential differences in appeal among subgroups. Each participant viewed 4 pod-style e-cigarette devices: one 'plain' and 3 in colourful 'skins'. Logistic regression models were conducted to test the effect of condition, adjusting for demographics, smoking and vaping status. In Experiment 1, participants in the 'standardized' packaging condition were significantly more likely to indicate 'I have no interest in trying any of these products' (72.3%) than those in the 'branded' condition (66.9%, AOR 1.45, 95% CI 1.33–1.59). Experiment 2 results indicated differences in e-cigarette appeal by sex in the selection of male- and female-oriented designs, and by cannabis use for a Rastafarian-themed design. Brand imagery on e-cigarettes can target products to specific subgroups. Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Avoiding youth initiation and treating addiction are fundamental public health issues to ensure better health. Among tobacco control policies, increasing tobacco price is the single most effective intervention. It reduces tobacco consumption, especially among youths, while representing a government financing source. This study aimed to assess the agreement with the proposal of a one-euro increase in tobacco price earmarked to health issues among students at Sapienza University. Two convenience samples were surveyed, five years apart, on World No Tobacco Days. Smoking habits, agreement with the proposal and reasons for it were collected. Results from the 208 questionnaires (107 in 2014, 101 in 2019) showed 46.6% of agreement with the proposal (53.3% in 2014, 39.2% in 2019, p = 0.044). Main predictive factor for agreement was being a non-smoker (OR = 6.33 p < 0.001), main reason (64.8%) was it could trigger smokers to quit or reduce consumption. Several factors might have influenced this finding, including the introduction of novel tobacco products and their increased advertisement on social media. In 2024, European Union is planning to update the Tobacco Taxation Directive which could greatly contribute to the reduction of non-communicable diseases and premature deaths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the e-cigarette and vaping resistance strategies used by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youths in rural Hawai'i. Focus groups (N = 17) were conducted in eight geographically dispersed elementary, middle/intermediate, and multilevel schools in low-income communities on Hawai'i Island. Sixty-nine youths (67% NHPI, Mage = 12.5 years) participated in this study. The resistance strategies discussed across the greatest number of groups were "refuse" (saying no), "explain" (providing reasons for vaping refusal), "avoid" (avoiding people or places where e-cigarettes were used), and "leave" (walking away from a situation where e-cigarettes were being used). Participants described the challenges in using these strategies within contexts characterized by widespread peer and family vaping and strong social demands to use e-cigarettes. The findings suggest the need for multi-level interventions based on youths' resistance strategies to meaningfully reduce youth vaping use in rural and/or NHPI communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Cigarette smoking during adolescence is a major public health concern with far-reaching health implications. Adolescents who smoke are at an increased risk of developing long-term health problems and are more likely to continue smoking into adulthood. Therefore, it is vital to identify and understand the risk factors that contribute to adolescent smoking – which in turn facilitate the development of targeted prevention and intervention programs. Methods Data was drawn from a cross-sectional survey conducted between October and December 2021, encompassing adolescents of adolescents aged 14 to 19 residing in Switzerland (n=2,683). Multiple logistic regression analysis was employed to explore which demographic, household, behavioural and psychographic factors are associated with current smoking status. Results The regression results showed higher odds of smoking for female respondents (OR 1.39; p-value 0.007); older adolescents (OR 1.30; p-value<0.001); those living in the French-speaking part of Switzerland (OR 1.39; p-value 0.021), in suburban areas (OR 1.35; p-value 0.023) and with a smoker in the same household (OR 2.41; p-value<0.001); adolescents consuming alcohol (OR 4.10; p-value<0.001), cannabis products (OR 6.72; p-value<0.001) and hookah (OR 5.07; p-value<0.001) at least once a month; respondents not engaging in sports (OR 1.90; p-value<0.001) or music (OR 1.42; p-value 0.031) as top five leisure activities and those experiencing high stress levels at home (OR 1.74; p-value<0.001). Adolescents with high scores in health awareness (OR 0.33; p-value<0.001), on the relational selfesteem scale (OR 0.78; p-value 0.054) and on the general well-being scale (OR 0.52; p-value 0.022) were less likely to smoke than their counterparts with lower scores. High risk-seeking was associated with higher odds of smoking (OR 2.15; p-value<0.001). Conclusions Our results suggest the importance of a comprehensive approach at both individual and institutional levels to reduce smoking rates in adolescents. More specifically, a holistic strategy that encompasses adolescents, families, schools and policymakers ranging from strengthening adolescents’ self-esteem, smoking cessation support for parents, to increasing engagement in musical and physical activities, and enhancing health awareness in the school curriculum. Background and Aims: Standard approaches to smoking cessation may not be as effective for certain populations, and tailoring on cultural factors could improve their effectiveness. This systematic review measured the effectiveness of culturally tailoring smoking cessation interventions on quitting or reducing smoking combustible tobacco. Method: We searched MEDLINE, PsychInfo, Embase and Cochrane Central Register from inception to 21 June 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of community‐based, primary care or web‐based interventions for smoking cessation in adults who smoked tobacco, with measurement of smoking abstinence or reduction at least 3 months following baseline. We examined comparisons between either an intensity‐matched culturally tailored intervention and a non‐tailored intervention or a standard non‐tailored intervention and the same intervention plus a culturally tailored adjunct. We sub‐grouped studies according to the level of tailoring and performed subgroup analyses where appropriate. We assessed risk of bias and certainty of evidence. Results: We identified 43 studies, 33 of which were meta‐analyzed (n = 12 346 participants). We found moderate certainty evidence, limited by heterogeneity, that intensity‐matched culturally tailored cessation interventions increased quit success when compared with non‐tailored interventions at 3‐month follow‐up or longer (n = 5602, risk ratio [RR] = 1.29 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10, 1.51, I2 = 47%, 14 studies). We found a positive effect of adding a culturally tailored component to a standard intervention compared with the standard intervention alone (n = 6674, RR = 1.47, 95% CI 1.10, 1.95, I2 = 74%, 18 studies), but our certainty in this effect was low due to imprecision and substantial statistical heterogeneity. Conclusion: Culturally tailored smoking cessation interventions may help more people to quit smoking than a non‐tailored intervention. Adapting or adding cultural components to smoking cessation interventions originally developed for majority populations could improve cessation rates in populations who do not fully identify with majority cultural norms. Background and aims: Smoking is considered the main cause of preventable death world‐wide. This study aimed to review the efficacy and safety of cytisine for smoking cessation. Methods: This review included an exhaustive search of databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in health centers of any level with smokers of any age or gender investigating the effects of cytisine at standard dosage versus placebo, varenicline or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Results: We identified 12 RCTs. Eight RCTs compared cytisine with placebo at the standard dose covering 5922 patients, 2996 of whom took cytisine, delivering a risk ratio (RR) of 2.25 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.42–3.56; I2 = 88%; moderate‐quality evidence]. The greater intensity of behavioral therapy was associated directly with the efficacy findings (moderate‐quality evidence). The confirmed efficacy of cytisine was not evidenced in trials conducted in low‐ and middle‐income countries. We estimate a number needed to treat (NNT) of 11. Two trials compared the efficacy of cytisine versus NRT, and the combination of both studies yields modest results in favor of cytisine. Three trials compared cytisine with varenicline, without a clear benefit for cytisine. Meta‐analyses of all non‐serious adverse events in the cytisine group versus placebo groups yielded a RR of 1.24 (95% CI = 1.11–1.39; participants = 5895; studies = 8; I2 = 0%; high‐quality evidence). Conclusions: Cytisine increases the chances of successful smoking cessation by more than twofold compared with placebo and has a benign safety profile, with no evidence of serious safety concerns. When a tunnel fire occurs, due to the difference of tunnel width and slope, both smoke countercurrent length distribution law and critical velocity will become different, and these two are very important parameters in tunnel longitudinal ventilation design. Therefore, for the design of smoke control and longitudinal ventilation of the tunnel, based on actual highway tunnel size, this paper established and ran a series of numerical simulations through FDS simulation software to study tunnel width and slope's effect on smoke countercurrent length and critical velocity. The results of this paper show that smoke countercurrent length decreases with tunnel slope's increase and increases with tunnel width's increase. Through dimensionless analysis, the prediction formulas of smoke countercurrent length and critical wind speed of large cross-section tunnel about tunnel width, slope and height are modified and established. The research conclusions can provide a theoretical basis for the longitudinal ventilation design, smoke prevention and exhaust measures and personnel evacuation in large cross-section tunnel fires. Not all pregnant individuals want to become parents and "parenting intention" can also vary within individuals during different pregnancies. Nevertheless, the potential impact of parenting intention on health-related behavior during pregnancy has been heavily underexplored. In this study, we employed a within-person between pregnancy design to estimate the effect of parenting-specific influences on smoking, separate from pregnancy-specific and individual-level influences. We quantified within-mother differences in smoking during pregnancies of infants they reared (n = 84) versus pregnancies of infants they placed for adoption at birth (n = 65) using multivariate mixed-effects Poisson regression models. Mean cigarettes/day declined as the pregnancy progressed regardless of whether infants were reared or placed. However, participants smoked fewer cigarettes/day during reared pregnancies. Relative to "adopted" pregnancies, smoking during "reared" pregnancies was lower by 24%, 41%, and 54% in first (95% CI 0.64–0.90; p = 0.001), second (95% CI 0.48–0.72; p < 0.001), and third trimesters (95% CI 0.36–0.59; p < 0.001), respectively, independent of between-pregnancy differences in maternal age, fetal sex, parity, and pregnancy complications. Female sex and nulliparity were protective. Parenting intention was associated with a protective effect on pregnancy smoking independent of pregnancy-specific influences and individual characteristics. Failure to consider the impact of parenting intention on health-related behavior during pregnancy could perpetuate an unrealistic expectation to "do what's best for the baby" and stigmatize women with unintended or unwanted pregnancies. Our goal of this study is to prevent marijuana smoking in the human population. In this manuscript, an updated mathematical model was established by incorporating two additional compartments: The hospitalized class and the prisoner's class. The updated model was validated, and it was shown to be novel compared to the non-user, experimental, recreational, and addicted (NERA) users' model. This distinction was crucial as it was challenging to prevent marijuana usage without these realistic classes. The entire population was split into six primary groups, including these new classes: non-users, experimental, recreational, addicted, hospitalized, and prisoners' class. Additionally, control techniques for marijuana prevention in the population were addressed with the aid of sensitivity analysis. The important point at which we may have determined the preliminary transmission rate of marijuana smoking was the basic reproductive number R 0 . Utilizing MATLAB, the Runge-Kutta method of order four was employed for the numerical simulation of the updated model to investigate the impact of control measures on marijuana smoking prevention. Background: Research is needed to identify the determinants of motivation to quit smoking among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) adults who smoke menthol cigarettes and reside in communities covered by menthol cigarette bans. Objectives: This study examined the associations between motivation to quit smoking and a range of individual-level predictors, including measures of demographics, harm/risk perception of menthol cigarettes, and awareness of a ban on menthol cigarettes in Los Angeles County unincorporated communities. Self-identified NHB adults who currently smoke menthol cigarettes (N=50; M=47.2 years; SD=13.7; 46% female) were recruited in Los Angeles County unincorporated communities. Participants completed an interviewer-administered cross-sectional survey between January to September 2021. Results: Participants (74%) reported an annual household income of less than $25,000. Participants' mean age at cigarette initiation was 15.7 years old (SD=5.68). Most (88%) were aware of the ordinance banning menthol cigarette sales. Employing multivariable linear regression analysis, harm/risk perception of menthol cigarettes (B=14.69, p<0.01) and awareness of the local menthol ban (B=26.18, p<0.05) were found to be independently associated with motivation to quit smoking. Conclusions: Findings from this community-based sample suggest that among NHB adults who smoke menthol cigarettes, motivation to quit smoking is influenced by their perception of menthol cigarettes as harmful and awareness of local policy banning the sale of menthol cigarettes. Findings underscore the need for community-centered and culturally grounded interventions to facilitate quitting among NHB adults who smoke in order for communities covered by menthol bans to achieve health equity in reducing preventable racial inequities due to menthol cigarettes. Context: Researchers have examined the campaign strategies, messaging, and outcomes of popular votes on tobacco tax increases from 1998 to 2008, but no study has investigated measures that have appeared since 2008. Methods: The author uses state newspaper archives, voter pamphlets, academic reports, advocacy websites, and personal interviews to obtain information about the 11 tobacco tax increase ballot measures that appeared from 2012 to 2022. Findings: The three measures that succeeded during 2012–2022 featured sufficient financial resources, collaboration with influential stakeholders, and early public support. Two of the three successful measures offered significant concessions to the tobacco industry, and both were designed as legislatively referred statutes. Elsewhere, proponents sought unsuccessfully to enact citizen-led initiatives that would allocate revenue to progressive policy priorities. In contrast to previous eras, tobacco industry arguments often centered around antitax and antigovernment rhetoric, which was viewed as especially compelling in conservative states. The industry's success rate was higher than in the past, and it continued to outspend its opponents, sometimes by staggering margins. Conclusions: Campaign spending and early support remain critical to the success of tobacco tax ballot measures. Objective: Oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer (OOPC) is a devastating disease often caught in late stages. People who use tobacco are at higher risk of OOPC. Tobacco cessation discussions and OOPC screenings are important factors in decreasing the risk of OOPC or its late stage diagnosis. As research on sex differences has been increasing—from research on biomedical to psychological and sociological determinants—there is a potential difference, by sex, as to whom is more likely to have a tobacco cessation discussion and OOPC screening. The objective of this study is to determine if there is an association of sex with tobacco cessation discussions and OOPC screenings conducted by dental healthcare professionals among participants who currently use tobacco. Method: Data from 8 years of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2018) were merged. Data from participants, ages 30 years and above, who self‐reported current use of tobacco, a dental visit within the previous year and responsed to questions about oral cancer screening were analysed for frequency determination and logistic regression analysis. Having the combination of neither OOPC screening nor discussion about the benefits of not using tobacco was the outcome in the analysis. Results: There were 22.1% who had an OOPC screening by a dental professional within the previous year. Of the 41% who reported having had a conversation with a dental professional within the previous year about the benefits of tobacco cessation, 9.8% reported having both the conversation and OOPC screening. Males were less likely than females to have the combination of neither OOPC screening nor advice about tobacco cessation than females (adjusted odds ratio: 0.74; 95%CI: 0.57, 0.96). Conclusion: There is an increased need for OOPC screening and the discussion of tobacco use by dental professionals among their patients who use tobacco, particularly for female patients. Smoking is one of the major causes of preventable death and is considered the greatest threat to global public health. While the prevalence of smoking has decreased, population growth has led to an increase in the absolute number of smokers. There are many proven smoking cessation interventions available to support smokers in their quit attempts. Most people who smoke, however, underutilize the treatments available to them. This scoping review aimed to identify the current barriers experienced by all stakeholders (smokers, service providers and policymakers) to existing evidence-based smoking cessation interventions in community healthcare settings. Five electronic databases (CINAHL, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched for relevant literature. A total of 40 eligible articles from different countries published between 2015 and 2022 were included in the review and content analysis carried out to identify the key barriers to smoking cessation interventions. Seven key themes were found to be common to all stakeholders: (i) literacy, (ii) competing demands and priorities, (iii) time, (iv) access to product, (v) access to service, (vi) workforce and (vii) motivation/readiness. These themes were mapped to the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model. Purpose: To explore a potential interaction between the effect of specific maternal smoking patterns and the presence of antenatal depression, as independent exposures, in causing postpartum depression (PPD). Methods: This case–control study of participants with singleton term births (N = 51220) was based on data from the 2017– 2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Multivariable log-binomial regression models examined the main effects of smoking patterns and self-reported symptoms of antenatal depression on the risk of PPD on the adjusted risk ratio (aRR) scale and tested a two-way interaction adjusting for covariates selected in a directed acyclic graph (DAG). The interaction effects were measured on the additive scale using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), the attributable proportion of interaction (AP), and the synergy index (SI). Causal effects were defined in a counterfactual framework. The E-value quantified the potential impact of unobserved/unknown covariates, conditional on observed covariates. Results: Among 6841 women in the sample who self-reported PPD, 35.7% also reported symptoms of antenatal depression. Out of 3921 (7.7%) women who reported smoking during pregnancy, 32.6% smoked at high intensity (≥ 10 cigarettes/day) in all three trimesters and 36.6% had symptoms of antenatal depression. The main effect of PPD was the strongest for women who smoked at high intensity throughout pregnancy (aRR 1.65; 95% CI: 1.63, 1.68). A synergistic interaction was detected, and the effect of all maternal smoking patterns was augmented, particularly in late pregnancy for Increasers and Reducers. Conclusion: Strong associations and interaction effects between maternal smoking patterns and co-occurring antenatal depression support smoking prevention and cessation interventions during pregnancy to lower the likelihood of PPD. Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the cause of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), a highly morbid disease that is linked to a number of co-morbid illnesses. Similar to other lung conditions, smoking is regarded as a major risk factor for tuberculosis in the lungs. Objective: To find out how common smoking is among pulmonary tuberculosis patients at Khyber Teaching Hospital's pulmonology department. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the pulmonology department of the Khyber Teaching Hospital in Peshawar between March 17 and September 16, 2022. A non-probability consecutive sampling method was utilized to include in the study 157 patients, aged 15 to 70, who had pneumonia brought on by tuberculosis, regardless of gender. The trial was approved by the hospital ethical committee, and the patients who took part provided written informed permission. Each patient's information was entered into a well-organized proforma. The frequency of smoking among the patients was noted. Data was entered using SPSS 23. Results: 60.5% of the total 157 patients were men and 39.5% were women. An average age was 37.13 +/- 16. 3.3±1.1 weeks was the mean duration of tuberculosis. The average time spent smoking was 59.9 +/- 3.1 months. In 38.2% and 28% of the patients, accordingly, there was diabetes and hypertension. Among all patients, smokers made up 30.6%. Conclusion: Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis frequently smoke; of those with the disease, 30.6% are reported smokers. This highlights the necessity of smoking reduction initiatives as a component of tuberculosis treatment to enhance results. Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of global morbidity and mortality, with acute exacerbations significantly worsening patient outcomes. These exacerbations often lead to hospitalizations and increased healthcare costs. Proper management, guided by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, is essential to improving care. However, real-world adherence to these recommendations can vary. Objective: To assess how acute COPD exacerbations were handled at a tertiary care hospital of Peshawar. Methodology: In the emergency department of Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, between November 2021 and December 2023, we retrospectively examined clinical data of patients presenting with acute exacerbations of COPD. The management was assessed in light of the GOLD 2019 report's and earlier audits' recommendations. Results: Total 170 patients (mean age 73 years, range 41-95 years, 54% male) were included. GOLD risk group (A-D) was only documented in 39% of the cases. At the time of presentation, 74% of the patients had their respiratory rate evaluated, and 69% had their blood gas analysis done. In all, 95% of the patients had chest imaging performed. Short-acting bronchodilators were used as initial symptomatic management in 56% of cases. Among them, 92% had systemic steroid therapy implemented. Conclusion: The GOLD guidelines were not fully followed, particularly in relation to non-invasive breathing, early symptomatic treatment, and severity assessment. These findings highlight the significance of periodic practice revisions on a regular basis, which may raise practitioners' knowledge and enhance the standard of COPD care in the long run. PurposeTobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in France, with 75,000 deaths each year. France aims to reduce smoking and achieve a smoke-free generation by 2032. However, recent tobacco industry innovations which mainly target young people, could undermine this goal. The main objective of this study is to assess the knowledge and consumption patterns of the “puff” among French adolescents in 2022.MethodsA cross-sectional study using a structured online survey on a representative sample of 400 adolescents aged 13 to 16 years was conducted from July 4th to 20th, 2022.ResultsAround 66% of adolescents reported having heard of the puff”, and one in ten having tried it. Slightly fewer of them have tried cigarettes; 89.6% of experimenters reported that it allowed them to explore unique flavors, 81.9% found it fun to play with the puff-cloud, and 94.5% of regular consumers considered it a stylish or cool product. 76% of adolescents believe that the puff is dangerous to their health, 71.6% describe it as a polluting device, and 62.8% think it’s a gadget.ConclusionThe “puff” is widely known by French adolescents and more commonly used than cigarettes, due, in part, to marketing specifically designed to target youth. That is why it could represent a threat to the smoke-free generation objectives. Public health policy could be informed by the ecological awareness of adolescents as a new lever of counter-influence to prevent this kind of consumption, as did ACT with the #stopcigarettespollution prevention campaign.

Abstract Background Most adult smokers started smoking in their teenage years, which increases the risk of nicotine dependence. In Denmark, there is a high prevalence of youth smoking among students in Vocational Education and Training (VET). However, reducing and preventing smoking in this group is a major challenge. This article presents a needs assessment aimed to explore factors sustaining legitimacy of smoking in VET schools and consider the measures needed to prepare VET schools’ implementation of smoking reduction and prevention interventions. Methods Participant observations were conducted in four VET classes representing three VET schools in Denmark with a duration of four days each. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers, managers, and a student advisor, as well as four focus groups with a total of 20 students. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and the data material was analyzed following Malterud’s systematic text condensation. Findings Factors that helped sustain legitimacy of smoking in VET schools included a positive and normalized attitude towards smoking at home and among friends, an understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in VET professions and schools, a perceived reliance on smoking as an icebreaker in new social relations and as a pedagogical tool, and smoking as a habit and a means to deal with boredom and stress relief. Conclusions The factors sustaining legitimacy of smoking in VET schools are reciprocal and call for smoking reduction and prevention intervention efforts which consider and address social influence, habitual behavior, and psychological needs, as well as changes at the policy level.

This review aimed to: (i) synthesise evidence on the use of systems approaches in scaling up interventions targeting four behavioural risk factors for NCDs; and (ii) to explore how systems approaches have been conceptualised and used in intervention implementation and scale up. Method: Seven electronic databases were searched for studies published 2016–2021. Eligible studies targeted at least one of four NCD behavioural risk factors (physical inactivity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet), or described evaluation of an intervention planned for or scaled up. Studies were categorised as having a (i) high, (ii) moderate, or (iii) no use of a systems approach. A narrative synthesis of how systems approaches had been operationalised in scale up, following PRISMA guidelines. Results: Twenty-one intervention studies were included. Only 19% (n = 4) of interventions explicitly used systems thinking to inform intervention design, implementation and scale up (targeting all four risk factors n = 2, diet n = 1, tobacco use n = 1). Five studies ('high use') planned and implemented scale up with an explicit focus on relations between system elements and used system changes to drive impact at scale. Seven studies ('moderate use') considered systems elements impacting scale-up processes or outcomes but did not require achieving system-level changes from the outset. Nine studies ('no use') were designed to work at multiple levels among multiple agencies in an intervention setting, but the complexity of the system and relations between system elements was not articulated. We synthesised reported barriers and facilitators to scaling up, and how studies within each group conceptualised and used systems approaches, and methods, frameworks and principles for scaling up. Conclusion: In physical activity research, and NCD prevention more broadly, the use of systems approaches in scale up remains in its infancy. For researchers, practitioners and policymakers wishing to adopt systems approaches to intervention implementation at scale, guidance is needed on how to communicate and operationalise systems approaches in research and in practice.
