But 9/11 also m4eans that the American people have become themselves a testimonial people, a people that have had to face the sense of catastrophe, unjustified massacre, irremediable loss, displacement, incomplete or inadequate mourning, and anger that marks the "situation of urgency" from which testimonial narratives arise. Though the attacks were directed against symbols of U.S. military and corporate power their immediate aftermath revealed a multiethnic, middle and working-class America among the victims. One Wound for Another/Una herencia por otra gives voice to this other America. Its response to the terrorist attacks is to embody the possibility of a different, more representative, plural, and just America. It is thus a book for our times, as we try to find ways to struggle against reactionary hegemony.
