The movement for the urban commons in Southern Italian cities has been facing the increasing touristification of the historic centres, a process of value extraction built on the character of 'authenticity' and 'marginality' of the urban poor's living to the external gaze. In this resistance, activists encountered the law both as a counter-hegemonic tool exploited to assert their claims over the urban space and as a governmental technique deployed by the public administration to partially tame their political praxis into bureaucratic frameworks. The law has thus been used both to shelter the marginalised from the effects of touristification and as a means to govern urban space by extracting value from urban poverty. This analysis highlights how movements opposing the commodification of urban poverty could gain political strength from creatively exploiting legal tools, which would allow them to protect the interests of the poor and achieve wealth distribution. It also stresses how urban studies would benefit from integrating the perspective of critical legal studies that considers the law as a battleground for social conflict. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main purpose of this study was to holistically understand the role of empowerment in urban poverty eradication of the Indian community in the urban areas of the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The poverty eradication effectiveness was tested by analysing community empowerment domains and MyKasih programme run by a non-governmental organisation. There are numerous studies conducted to understand the issues of poverty in Malaysia. However, few studies have so far focused on the minority community in Malaysia. Moreover, there is no recent study to test the effectiveness of any governmental or NGO's poverty eradication efforts on this minority community. This study utilised a qualitative approach and an in-depth interview was used to gather the data. Housing First is a popular model of homeless services that has transformed urban governance across the globe. Scholars have praised Housing First as voluntary care or criticized it as a disciplinary intervention. Both perspectives offer a partial account of Housing First case management. I extend those studies with interview-based research that conceptualizes U.S. Housing First as a hybrid form of homeless governance that exercises control through discipline and inclusive repression. Government authorities contract Housing First providers to reduce public expenditures by rehousing chronically homeless people. Case managers make disciplinary interventions until tenants are confronted with an eviction. At that point, service providers use inclusionary repression to sustain market exchanges by selectively disenfranchising tenants and rendering them pliable to disciplinary interventions in the future. This paper advances homeless scholarship by showing how, as a publicly subsidized property management service, U.S. Housing First buttresses urban housing markets through hybrid governance. Introduction: The green economy is one of the most important manifestations of the integration of economic, social, and environmental dimensions, and without it, sustainable development will not be achieved. The purpose of this article is to identify the components and constructive indicators of the green economy in conjunction with the reduction of urban poverty in Mashhad. Data and Method: This research, in terms of method, is apart from quantitative-qualitative research, in terms of purpose, it is apart from applied research, and in terms of nature, it is among descriptive and analytical research. In the first step, by using the information of the statistical blocks of the Statistics Center for the city of Mashhad in 2016, it has been done to identify urban poverty areas using spatial analysis in the GIS software environment. Then, in the identified poverty areas, the effect of green economy indicators on reducing urban poverty was investigated and analyzed using Pearson's correlation tests and regression of the indicators. Results: The findings of this analysis show that the components of the green economy including access to resources, human capital, economic structure, green management, green investment, green jobs, and green transportation significantly explain the urban poverty of Mashhad, which amount It is equal to 87.3 percent. Conclusion: Considering that the components of the green economy significantly explain the urban poverty of Mashhad, necessary planning should be done in this case.In this research, solutions based on the green economy have been presented in order to reduce poverty in the poor areas of Mashhad city. Introduction: The issue of poverty is not only one of the most important issues in the world, but also one of the most important internal issues and problems of all societies, both rich and poor. Urban poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon and urban dwellers suffer due to many deprivations, including lack of access to employment opportunities, lack of adequate housing and infrastructure, lack of social security, and lack of access to health, education, and personal security. In the meantime, it seems necessary to have a comprehensive study on poverty that includes a detailed analysis of its positive factors. For this purpose, the present study has been compiled with the aim of investigating and measuring the factors affecting the emergence of the phenomenon of urban poverty in the metropolis of Ahvaz. Data and Method: This research is applied-theoretical in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in terms of nature and method. In this study, urban poverty in the form of five dimensions of economic, socio-cultural, managerial, physical infrastructure and environmental-geographical in the form of 36 indicators have been studied. Results: The results of this study indicate this, In the economic dimension, the biggest impact was the lack of jobs and stable income with an average of 4/09, In the socio-cultural dimension, the lack of women's participation in decision-making, with an average of 3/08, had the greatest impact, Also, in the managerial-institutional dimension, the most affected urban poverty in the metropolis of Ahvaz from the factor of sanctions, with an average of 3, had a positive and significant effect. The phenomenon of urban poverty from the point of view of physical and infrastructural indicators has been most affected by the lack of infrastructure of cultural activities, marginalization with an average of 3.07 and 3, respectively. The last component of the factors affecting the urban poverty pattern that is addressed in this study is environmental-geographical factors The components of the imposed war situation and the special situation of the region with an average of 4.5, and 3, respectively, had the greatest impact on the existence of urban poverty in the metropolis of Ahvaz. Conclusion: The results of the analysis of the questionnaire show that the majority of residents of Ahvaz are in poor economic condition. The current pilot study introduced trauma-informed professional development for teachers in an urban, K-8, Title I public school prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Equipping middle school teachers with trauma knowledge and resources enabled them to modify their pedagogical approach to align better with students' emotional and academic needs shaped by living in poverty. Thematic analysis of qualitative data (i.e., 48 teacher journal entries, one focus group transcript) produced three overarching themes related to changes in teaching practices, student engagement, and classroom culture: (a) transforming to teach (i.e., teacher empathy, awareness, understanding of students' living conditions), (b) teaching to transform (i.e., teacher critical thinking about students' needs, reactions, and consequences), and (c) transforming to learn (student engagement, expressiveness, confidence). This study's findings highlight how middle school educators can effectively implement trauma-sensitive techniques in their classrooms to enhance safe learning spaces, student support, and classroom management for stress-affected young people. This study's university-community school partnership may offer a model for the design, structure, and resources necessary to implement classroom-level, trauma-informed professional development for Title I nonclinical middle school personnel. We test an adjusted version of the classic monocentric-city model to explain the spatial sorting of rich versus poor people in Jakarta. We find that in Jakarta (1) the urban rich tend to live in the city centre; (2) because of extreme congestion levels, the elasticity between income and the opportunity cost of time spent commuting is higher than the elasticity between income and demand for larger plots of residential land; and (3) the motorbike is the most important and fastest mode of transport for the urban poor. These findings contrast with existing evidence from the United States. Both the logic of the monocentric-city model and empirical evidence suggest that the urban rich in Jakarta tend to cluster in the city centre. However, empirical evidence also suggests that the sorting of the rich and poor in Jakarta—as indicated by spatial variation in income, expenditure and land prices—depends not only on distance from the city centre but also on other neighbourhood characteristics, especially flood risk, crime rates and the proximity of a commercial area. Demographic and socioeconomic composition changes in neighbourhoods are often the result of local factors (e.g., gentrification or disinvestment) that promote population growth of certain ethnoracial and socioeconomic groups over others, and regional demographic and economic trends that affect metropolitan areas as a whole. This exploratory analysis isolates the portion of poverty and ethnoracial composition change in suburbs that is attributable to regional trends from local factors. The analysis is conducted for the Chicago–Joliet–Naperville metropolitan area during the 2000s. The results show that processes such as suburban poverty and growing minority populations are to a large extent attributable to the shrinking nonpoor White population. This change in the number of nonpoor Whites in suburbs seems to be related to regional population trends, whereas much of the population change of nonpoor and poor minorities is linked to local neighbourhood conditions. Objective: The trend of urbanization in developing countries has been faced with spatial imbalances, polarization of regions and social groups, and unstable urban growth. As the instability caused by this uneven growth has led to the formation of areas of poverty in urban areas. Spatial analysis of these areas determines the extent of deprivation in different areas and prioritizes measures to improve living standards. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate the existing inequalities and show the pattern of poverty in Ardabil urban blocks with emphasis on social indicators during the years 2006 to 2016 and also to investigate the factors affecting the organization of this phenomenon. Methods: The research method is spatial analysis in terms of applied purpose and approach. The statistical population of this research is the legal limits of Ardabil in 2006 and 2016 and the sample size is all the statistical blocks of the mentioned years. In order to collect research data, the information available in the statistical blocks of 2006 and 2016 in Erbil and a questionnaire of academic elites and city managers have been used. To show the situation of social poverty, spatial autocorrelation technique was used using hot spot analysis in Arc / GIS software and to analyze the pattern of social poverty distribution, Moran statistic was used. To analyze the data of the second part of the research (identifying the factors affecting the expansion and spatial organization of social poverty zones), the structural equation analysis model in AMOS software has been used Results: Based on the obtained results, out of 5142 urban blocks in Ardabil in 2006, about 53% were in a very deprived and deprived condition, 26% were in a moderate condition and about 21% were in a well-off condition. In 2016, these percentages are 46, 22, 32 among 6439 urban blocks, respectively, and this also shows that Ardabil urban blocks in terms of social indicators in 2016 compared to 2006 they are in a better situation. Conclusion: Due to the spread of urban poverty in Ardabil over the past decades, empowerment of low-income and poor in the city should be done with a multidimensional perspective (and not just paying attention to the physical dimensions). In this regard, the role of facilitator of the city management system and the realization of bottom-up planning and participatory approach is essential.

The doctrine of sustainable development has its origins in the realm of international environmental law. This article considers its potential usefulness for the purposes of alleviating urban poverty in South Africa. Urban poverty is an endemic and persistent phenomenon in South African cities, which lack economic and social integration. In the realm of international sustainable development discourse, it has come to be acknowledged in more recent years that sustainable development is intertwined with issues of poverty. South African legislation and case law acknowledge sustainable development but do not consider its possible usefulness as an underpinning doctrine for urban poverty alleviation. The potential of the doctrine for this purpose has been justifiably questioned on several grounds. However, it is possible to conceptualise ways in which it can be deployed as a theoretical basis for initiatives towards such alleviation. It is argued in this article that all three branches of government in South Africa should play a role in achieving this.

One of the most important topics in development economics texts is the issue of poverty, measuring and reducing it and poverty alleviation. The first step in planning to fight poverty and reducing inequality is to have a proper understanding of the poverty situation. According to this issue, the purpose of this study is identifying and analyzing urban poverty as well as its spatial distribution in the neighborhoods of Shahrekord and to formulate and present suggestions and solutions appropriate to the approach of organizing human societies in order to address its unhealthy conditions. The present article has taken a cognitive and exploratory approach in terms of purpose and is considered evaluative-comparative in terms of method that after explaining the concept of urban poverty with the help of quantitative and qualitative data (statistical block 2016, Upstream plans, land use maps, etc.) of 40 indicators in the form of four main economic, social, cultural and physical variables has been classified using TOPSIS and AHP methods and has identified and distributed the spatial distribution of urban poverty in Shahrekord neighborhoods with ARC GIS software. Urban poverty was addressed in Shahrekord neighborhoods and a map of poverty distribution was drawn. The results show that Koreh, Borveh Pahneh, Darb Darreh, Ashtaftak and Mahdieh neighborhoods were identified as poor and targets for planning.

The lack of opportunities for employment is still present in most South American cities. This arises as a problem due to its impact on chronic poverty and social mobility, two of the main challenges in the region. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify the causal link between residential location and labour market exclusion, and its effects on development, geography, and urbanism. This paper uses an urban mobility approach to define the geographic poverty pattern and to generate new tools for the development of local policies in Quito. It also delves the lack of opportunities to access employment, as representing the main source of urban poverty growth in South America, especially due to residential location. The analysis applies the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the Labour Exclusion by Residential Causes Index (LERCI) to each Quito parish. LERCI includes variables of distance, cost, and public transportation density. Our results regarding the correlation between the two indices suggest a pattern of labour exclusion by residential causes that includes two different dimensions of urban poverty – one in downtown parishes and the other in the periphery.

Abstract Background Country-wide urbanization in Uganda has continued amidst institutional challenges. Previous interventions in the water and sanitation sector have not addressed the underlying issues of a poorly managed urbanization processes. Poor urbanisation is linked to low productivity, urban poverty, unemployment, limited capacity to plan and offer basic services as well as a failure to enforce urban standards. Methods This ethnographic study was carried out in three urban centres of Gulu, Mbarara and Kampala. We explored relationships between urban livelihoods and sustainable urban sanitation, using the economic sociology of urban sanitation framework. This framework locates the urbanization narrative within a complex system entailing demand, supply, access, use and sustainability of slum sanitation. We used both inductive and deductive thematic analysis. Results More than any other city in Uganda, Kampala was plagued with poor sanitation services characterized by a mismatch between demand and the available capacity for service provision. Poor slum sanitation was driven by; the need to escape rural poverty through urban migration, urban governance deficits, corruption and the survival imperative, poor service delivery and lack of capacity, pervasive (urban) informality, lack of standards: ‘to whom it may concern’ attitudes and the normalization of risk as a way of life. Amidst a general lack of affordability, there was a critical lack of public good conscience. Most urbanites were trapped in poverty, whereby economic survival trumped for the need for meeting desirable sanitation standards. Conclusions Providing sustainable urban livelihoods and meeting sanitation demands is nested within sustainable livelihoods. Previous interventions have labored to fix the sanitation problem in slums without considering the drivers of this problem. Sustainable urban livelihoods are critical in reducing slums, improving slum living and curtailing the onset of slumification. Urban authorities need to make urban centres economically vibrant as an integral strategy for attaining better sanitation standards.

In the evolving landscape of poverty research, especially in China, the focus has shifted from eliminating absolute poverty to relieving relative poverty. Although much of the existing studies have begun to use built environment big data, such as remote sensing and street view imagery, to measure poverty, peoples' consumption, an essential indicator of poverty receives less attention. This study delves into the relationship and spatial disparity between poverty measured by consumer big data and multidimensional poverty measured based on the census data. We investigated 1731 communities in Guangzhou as case study regions and combined their residents' mobile phone metadata and spatial cost of living data as the input consumer big data. Then, we constructed Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) levels based on the census data and built random forest classification model based on our consumer big data to predict IMD level at community level. The result shows that the predicted poverty of 81.11% communities were generally consistent with the IMD level, indicating that the consumer big data poverty mapping provided a viable poverty measurement from consumer behavior perspective. The SHapley Additive exPlanations' values result shows that Pinduoduo (a low-cost online shopping mobile application) contributes the most to predicted poverty from consumer behavior. For spatial disparities, poverty mapping based on consumer big data is more sensitive to the poverty in suburban developing neighborhoods and affordable housing communities compared with the IMD. The urban poverty mapping based on consumer big data offers a timely portray of communities' socio-economic challenges and consumption-related poverty, and provides support and evidence for accurate urban poverty alleviation strategies. • Innovatively employed consumer big data to spatially measure urban poverty. • Pinduoduo, fashion businesses, and mobile phone communication expenses are critical factors in identifying urban poverty. • Revealed potentially latent poverty in urban central and peripheral communities based on consumer big data. • Analyzed the mechanism of consumer big data for poverty estimation by analyzing individual communities. This study argues that Vision 2030 and social housing should consider the elements of the sociocultural dimension of urban design (SDUD) to alleviate urban poverty-induced feelings. By examining public spaces in the context of Vision 2030 and the implementation of social housing projects, this study aims to provide a theoretical framework that may assist city policymakers in rethinking the role of public spaces in alleviating poverty-related feelings. A review of the relevant literature explores the SDUD elements and builds an index to measure poverty through bibliometric and content analysis. This index was used to analyze the gaps in Vision 2030 in South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt, which we randomly chose. It focused on SDUD elements, social housing, and public spaces. We empirically examined the role of public spaces in alleviating poverty-related feelings using the SDUD index. We applied episodic narrative and interview-based storytelling techniques to a limited group of poor residents in the Al Asmarat Housing Project in Mokattam, Cairo, Egypt. This interview discusses the role of public spaces in reducing poverty-related feelings. The results focus on exploring the four SDUD elements of poverty and examining how public spaces alleviate poverty-induced feelings. Vision 2030 revolves around SDUD elements, social housing, and public spaces. Urban design policies can alleviate poverty in development projects for the poor. Integrating urban design policies into Vision 2030 makes city dwellers in developing countries feel less inferior.

This study attempts to identify the location and characteristics of poor urban neighborhoods in Pyongyang using deep-learning-based remote sensing (RS), geographic information systems (GIS), and big data analyses. To this end, we first classify the residential areas of Pyongyang City into five classes. We then analyze each class's spatial and inter-variable characteristics to identify the location and characteristics of poor residential areas. Due to the scarcity of statistical data and the restricted access to the city, this study introduces a research methodology termed Machine-Human Sequential Design (MHSD). The results of the study show that low levels of Housing environment, Economic status, Accessibility, and Block activation characterized poor neighborhoods in Pyongyang. In comparing individual variables, the density of single-story slate-roofed houses (tangjip) was the highest, and the density of night illumination, number of cars, and points of interest (POIs) was the lowest. This study illustrates the distinctions in urban poverty in Pyongyang compared to developing countries and introduces a novel research methodology tailored for a highly closed city. We investigate the factors underlying poverty transitions in Nairobi's slums focusing on whether differences in characteristics make people more prone to enter poverty and persist in, or whether past experience of poverty matters on future states. Understanding these issues is essential for the design of effective policy programs aimed at enhancing the lives of the poor. The paper uses an endogenous switching model, which accounts for initial conditions, non-random attrition, and unobserved heterogeneity. Estimations are based on a panel dataset from the Nairobi Demographic Surveillance System. Results indicate that true state dependence (TSD) constitutes the major factor driving poverty persistence. There are little heterogeneity effects. Even when household and individual observed characteristics differ notably, the TSD size remains very large. Active anti-poverty programs aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty constitute then the most appropriate policies for taking people out of poverty and preventing them to fall back in. This study analyses the epistemic functions of images in the geographic and sociological discourses on poverty habitat in the megacities of the global south by focusing on Mexico city. Based on a conceptual and methodological review of art history from Bildwissenschaft perspective (visual studies), this paper aims to examine the poverty habitat by describing its typologies, patterns, encodings and possible effects of its visual constructions. This paper is based on a project that raised awareness of the challenges faced by children among the urban poor worldwide and recognized their contributions to their families and communities. In 2008-09, ethnographic fieldwork documented the daily lives of four teenagers in New York City, Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi, and Ankara. This paper aims to assess sociodemographic and environmental factors on food consumption expenditure of urban poor households in 33 provinces in Indonesia from 2008-to 2019. The data used in this study were sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The method used is panel data econometrics with a fixed-effect model. This study provides empirical evidence that income per capita, population, family planning acceptors, and single residents have a positive and significant effect on the food consumption expenditure of the urban poor. Meanwhile, access to drinking water and improved sanitation has a negative and significant effect on food consumption expenditures for the urban poor. The policy implication that can be prioritized is to increase human capital investment because it will increase competence and employment opportunities so that the income earned can increase consumption. Increasing family planning acceptors is also needed to suppress the population growth rate because if there are additional family members, it will increase the consumption burden. This will impact increasing poverty if a level of welfare does not accompany it. In addition, access to drinking water and improved sanitation needs to be improved because they impact the health of the population in the long term

Abstract Background There is an increasing global trend towards urbanization. In general, there are less food access issues in urban than rural areas, but this “urban advantage” does not benefit the poorest who face disproportionate barriers to accessing healthy food and have an increased risk of malnutrition. Objectives This systematic literature review aimed to assess urban poverty as a determinant of access to a healthy diet, and to examine the contribution of urban poverty to the nutritional status of individuals. Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology, our review included quantitative and qualitative studies published in English or in Spanish between 2000 and 2019. The articles were eligible if they focused on nutrition access (i.e. access to a healthy diet) or nutrition outcomes (i.e., anemia, overweight and obesity, micronutrient deficiency, micronutrient malnutrition) among urban poor populations. Articles were excluded if they did not meet pre-established criteria. The quality of the quantitative studies was assessed by applying Khan et al.’s methodology. Similarly, we assessed the quality of qualitative articles through an adapted version of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) methodology checklist. Finally, we systematically analyzed all papers that met the inclusion criteria based on a qualitative content and thematic analysis. Results Of the 68 papers included in the systematic review, 55 used quantitative and 13 used qualitative methods. Through the analysis of the literature we found four key themes: (i) elements that affect access to healthy eating in individuals in urban poverty, (ii) food insecurity and urban poverty, (iii) risk factors for the nutritional status of urban poor and (iv) coping strategies to limited access to food. Based on the systematization of the literature on these themes, we then proposed a conceptual framework of urban poverty and nutrition. Conclusions This systematic review identified distinct barriers posed by urban poverty in accessing healthy diets and its association with poorer nutrition outcomes, hence, questioning the “urban advantage”. Forced eviction remains a contributory factor to urban poverty, loss of accommodation, and displacement among urban poor. By extension, these forcible displacement experiences result in a downward shift in their standard of living; thus, contributing to urban poverty within the urban space. This study examines forced Eviction in the Badia East community of Lagos State, Nigeria, from a human right angle. The study adopted a mixed-method approach. Primary data was obtained from quantitative (structured questionnaire), geospatial analysis, and qualitative data sources (interview), which was conducted with evictees and the Lagos State Physical Planning and Development Agency (LASPPDA) (evictor). The research outcome revealed that the evictees exhibited a nomadic lifestyle, which has, over the years, developed into resilience. The study identified the need for increased public access, location, and provision of some social amenities such as public toilets, bathrooms, and water points to ease the shock of eviction which indirectly translates into environmental degradation. It was concluded that the current and projected pace of urbanization necessitates new approaches to land governance, especially the regulation of informal settlements and forced evictions.

Urban poverty in both the developed and developing world is often spatially organized with deprivation highly concentrated in segregated areas of cities. With the rapid urbanization and lack of effective urban planning in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa, segregation, economic deprivation and social exclusion are particularly severe challenges. In the United States, almost 30 years of poverty deconcentration policy has had mixed results and offers cautions to other countries looking to confront urban segregation. Accra, the capital city of Ghana, offers an intriguing example of a city with substantial clusters of poverty and slum areas, but also some neighborhoods with high existing levels of economic integration. Drawing on the theoretical and empirical context of poverty deconcentration efforts in the United States, this paper presents a conceptual framework with two alternative pathways for urban development: an inclusionary pathway and an exclusionary pathway. We use this framework to review and critique Ghana's existing urban policy and offer implications for inclusionary urban policy in Accra and other similar cities in developing countries. COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant adverse impacts, in all ramifications, to the Nigerian society, especially in worsening the hunger situation resulting from the distortion of the urban food system. It has inhibited food choices and access for urban residents due to restrictions imposed on movement and human interactions. In Nigeria, the majority is in the informal economy who depend on the daily income for everyday needs, including food. This study, therefore, establishes specific knowledge links between COVID-19 and the urban food system. Also, it reviewed the impacts of adopted safety protocols and government policies during the COVID-19 pandemic on the Nigerian urban food supply system vis-a-vis state and non-state interventions to provide palliatives for the urban poor and vulnerable groups. The paper concluded that Nigeria has not adequately built a resilient strategy for eventualities, such as the COVID-19 emergency. Also, all measures instituted at different levels of government towards strengthening the urban food system during the pandemic were grossly inadequate as they could barely serve a fraction of the urban vulnerable. Therefore, the paper suggests a holistic policy review towards promoting resilience in the urban food system to withstand future emergencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Disaster risk is increasing sharply in cities around the world that are at hazards. Within cities, especially cities in low and middle-income countries, some urban spaces are constructed to distribute risks unfairly. For example, in Tehran, the existence of threatening hazards such as earthquakes, floods, fires and many environmental challenges along with a large area of unstable fabrics has caused this city to have special conditions in terms of disaster risk management. This study utilizes the approach of integrating disaster management policies and promotion of underutilised fabrics following the zoning of these fabrics in Tehran in terms of vulnerability to various hazards and provides solutions to control and reduce the damage caused by hazards with emphasis on policy-making, planning and prevention. Data and Method: This research is applied-developmental in terms of type and its general model is descriptive-analytical and based on the evaluation method, during which the modeling, construction of a composite index and integration and superimposition of information layers and data based on the analytic hierarchy process to determine the final weight of spatial units and zoning of vulnerability of underutilised Fabrics in Tehran has been done. Indicator data and layers are also extracted from sources and various secondary data. Scoring of indices and sub-indices is based on experts' questionnaire and calculations were done in ARC GIS software. Results: In Tehran, there is a large overlap between the range of underutilised urban fabrics and higher levels of urban poverty, population concentration, and the potential for a variety of hazards. In this regard, underutilised fabrics of the southern half of Tehran, especially in regions 15, 18 and 20 in the first degree and regions 16, 17 and 19 in the second degree have the greatest potential for risk. Conclusion: In some areas of Tehran, the realities of disaster management are much more complex than existing plans and policies. The disaster management system in underutilised fabrics requires a different mechanism compared to other parts of the city. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk in these areas, it is necessary to pay special attention to the issue of reducing urban poverty and vulnerability, and in general integrating policies and measures of disaster risk management and urban planning and social and economic development programs. This paper examines the effects of conditional cash transfer programs in Argentina and Brazil on the existing regional disparities in urban poverty between 2011-2015, with northern regions in both countries being the poorest. The main CCT programs are Asignación Universal por Hijo in Argentina and Bolsa Familia in Brazil. Using microdata from Encuesta Permanente de Hogares for Argentina and Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios in the case of Brazil it is found that the absolute reductions in poverty associated to the CCTs are greater in the poorest regions in both countries. However, the poverty reductions in relative terms are greater in less poor regions in Brazil. In Argentina the poverty reduction in relative terms is the greatest in one of the two northern regions and the smallest in the other one, which is actually the poorest one. While greater relative reductions are expected in less poor regions, the result still suggests that the allocation of these fiscal instruments could be refined to better contribute to the reduction of regional disparities.

The study set out to analyse the differences in the characteristics and spatial distribution of urban beggars in Sanglah, Denpasar City. It employed survey research for data collection by observation, structured interviews with a questionnaire, and documentation. These data were later processed and analysed in a quantitative descriptive manner. The results show that, based on religion, there were two groups of beggars, namely Muslim and Hindu. Spatially, the Hindu beggars disregarded the religion of the people they implored, whereas the Muslim beggars would only target the houses and shops owned by Muslims. Those two class of beggars differ in languages, bagging duration, daily-earning, clothing, and sympathy-drawing strategy during the panhandling.

Abstract Grounded on semi-structured interviews, we seek to examine the impact of neighborhood effects on the individuals’ living conditions in four shanty-towns of Salvador, Brazil, addressing the question of under what conditions the proximity to affluent gated communities fosters their socio-economic integration. The research demonstrates that the relationship between spatial proximity and socio-economic integration is conditioned by the capacity of public space to promote (non)employment cross-class interactions, the impact of crime, and the gated communities' degree of securitization. Whereas in Calabar, large opportunities of socio-economic participation in its surroundings mitigate the negative impact of neighborhood effects, (non-)employment relationships sharply decline in the less centrally located Vale das Pedrinhas and Bate Facho, where the informal proletariat has been excluded from using the public space for commercial activities. The construction of the highly isolated gated community Alphaville II has neither fostered cross-class interactions nor benefitted the economic integration of the Vila Verde inhabitants. In all neighborhoods physical boundaries have been internalized by a similar discourse that emphasizes class-hierarchized opportunities for upward socio-economic mobility, particularly regarding the access to schools and public security. The study urges to reflect on a more holistic approach to social inequalities, comprising socially more integrative labor and housing policies.

Objective: Urban poverty is one of the main problems in dilapidated areas, and today these two issues are intertwined and have created an inappropriate urban structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of urban poverty on the spatial-physical structure of worn-out tissues in the city of Izeh. Methods: The method of conducting the present study is descriptive-analytical, the information of which has been collected through library studies and by completing a questionnaire. The statistical population of the study is households living in dilapidated neighborhoods of Izeh with sample size. And for data analysis, the statistical approach of structural equation modeling (SEM) and the first two-factor confirmatory factor analysis test were used. Results:Analysis of the findings of structural equation modeling indicates that among the measured indicators, among the components of urban poverty, economic index which has played a very important role in the physical-spatial structure of the worn-out tissue of Izeh city with Decreasing this index, physical-spatial structure has increased inadequacy. Also, by examining the migration patterns and choosing the area for living by residents and neighbors, the satisfaction of non-native neighbors in the area, non-native immigrants and improving the spatial and physical condition shows that the main reason for residents and immigrants to choose neighborhood for living is equality. Neighbors are economically and income-generating. Conclusion: The results of the structural equations equation show that there is a significant relationship between the components of urban poverty and the components of the physical-spatial structure of the worn-out urban fabric. Therefore, in order to take the necessary measures, it needs the serious attention of city and regional managers and planners.

This paper addresses the persistent challenges in housing the urban poor in Bangladesh. In particular, it explores the empirical evidence on informal networks of the urban poor as they relate to service provision in low-income settlements of Khulna City. It also analyses the emerging forms of urban governance in low-income urban settlements. Specifically, it investigates the transformation process of project-assisted form of informal network of the urban poor. This paper argues that community-based organisations in poor settlements in Bangladesh represent informal networks of the urban poor. Whether these networks are being federated depends on their type or form, and this is often the outcome of project-led initiatives. The findings show that project based initiatives have failed to assist these networks with the appropriate rules and resources required for their effectiveness. Moreover, these efforts are taking place in a system that is attempting to establish enabling mechanisms under a system of neo-liberalism. Thus, it is necessary to explore the possible ways to bridge formal and informal processes through institutionalisation under a wider urban governance framework.

Introduction One of the most important urban problems is the formation of a phenomenon called urban poverty. Urban poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon, and urban dwellers suffer from many disadvantages, including lack of access to employment opportunities, housing and infrastructure, lack of social security, and access to personal health, education, and security, urban poverty is not limited to these characteristics and refers to unstable conditions, which can lead to vulnerabilities and disability. Living in impoverished cities means an economy that is produced to survive. Urban poverty is the transmission of a huge economic shock that usually occurs through the labor market and job loss. Poverty scope should be defined as the spatial representation of poverty in urban areas. Today, in trying to achieve human development, measuring and determining urban poverty is an issue that is pursued in policy-making and human development management in many countries, and this requires the adoption of scientific methods, especially in the geographical determination of urban slums and it’s through the use of statistical methods and the definition of appropriate indexes to determine the different dimensions of urban poverty. Therefore, in this study, while trying to define urban poverty and its main dimensions, we try to obtain an accurate knowledge of the geographical features of urban poverty and its dimensions in the study area. Methodology The present type of research is applied and in compiling this research, documentary method, library study to collect existing views, theories and experiences and descriptive-analytical method to study the spatial pattern of poverty in Babol have been used. The data used from the statistical blocks of 1390 were obtained from the Statistics Center of Iran. GIS software has been used to extract and classify the data of this research. In this study, 25 indexes related to urban poverty have been used in two levels of neighborhoods and urban blocks. The indexes used in this study are examined in three economic, social and physical dimensions. In order to identify poverty zones, the desired indexes were first calculated at the level of statistical blocks. Then, all statistical blocks were examined according to the desired field through Hot Spot Analysis tool from Spatial Statistics Tools and based on it, spatial analysis of urban poverty indexes was performed on the scale of statistical blocks. Results and discussion Spatial analysis of urban poverty: The economic dimension of poverty The results of spatial analysis showed that the spatial distribution of the city did not have a specific order. The central part of the city, especially neighborhoods 6, 16 and the western part of the city (neighborhood 15) are in the most favorable conditions in terms of economic welfare. In contrast, the north-west and southeast of the city suffer from widespread poverty. The findings also show that more than 23% of the city's population is in relative poverty and 1.7% is in absolute poverty, with a population of 19,5880 in 19.4% of the city's area. In general, the population living in poor economic conditions and experiencing some form of poverty is slightly higher than those in relative or absolute welfare. The social dimension of poverty The findings show that more than 36 percent of the city's area is socially poor and relatively poor, accounting for about 29.9 percent of the city's population. Spatially, this amount of population often resides on the northeastern, southern and southwestern margins of Babol. Like the economic dimension of poverty, in the social dimension, the central districts of the city are in a better position than in other areas; In contrast, neighborhoods No. 22, 19, 18 and 5 (Map No. 3) are among the neighborhoods with high poverty rates. The physical dimension of poverty The results showed that the southern and northeastern margins of the city, such as economic and social dimensions, are in unfavorable conditions. In terms of spatial dominance, neighborhoods 19, 18 and 11 are in poor physical condition. In contrast, neighborhoods 6, 8, 16 and 13, which are located in the central part of the city, are in relatively good condition. On a city scale, more than 35 percent of the city's population lives in areas of the city that have relative or absolute physical poverty. This population lives in 45.4% of the city's area. The final pattern of urban poverty The final model of poverty to identify the main areas of poverty in the city of Babol is the result of spatial integration of 25 indexes in the three dimensions of economic, social and physical. The results showed that small areas of poverty can be seen in the northern and northwestern areas of the city, but the main areas of poverty can be seen in the northeastern, southeastern and western areas. Poverty in the city of Babol has a population of 47,140, ​​or 35.2% of the total population. In terms of area, these areas cover more than 43% of the total area of ​​the city. In contrast, most of the city's central areas, such as neighborhoods 6, 8, and 16, are in good economic, social, and physical condition. It should be noted that only 28.3% of the city's population and 21.34% of the city's area are in good condition, which indicates that most of the city's space is facing many problems in various economic, social and physical fields. Conclusion The complexity of urban systems and the relationships and interactions between them lead to the formation of various phenomena in urban and metropolitan areas. Spatial inequality is one of these urban phenomena, examples of which are urban poverty. This article identifies the spatial pattern of different dimensions of poverty in the city of Babol. The results of spatial analysis of urban poverty indexes in the city of Babol showed most of the city of Babol is facing many problems in various economic, social and physical fields.

Assessing the factors affecting the volatility of informal settlements

The doctrine of sustainable development has its origins in the realm of international environmental law. This article considers its potential usefulness for the purposes of alleviating urban poverty in South Africa. Urban poverty is an endemic and persistent phenomenon in South African cities, which lack economic and social integration. In the realm of international sustainable development discourse, it has come to be acknowledged in more recent years that sustainable development is intertwined with issues of poverty. South African legislation and case law acknowledge sustainable development but do not consider its possible usefulness as an underpinning doctrine for urban poverty alleviation. The potential of the doctrine for this purpose has been justifiably questioned on several grounds. However, it is possible to conceptualise ways in which it can be deployed as a theoretical basis for initiatives towards such alleviation. Slum formation and settlements globally are an indication of either a housing deficit or the relative un-affordability of formal housing. Across developing nations it is quite common to find the urban poor resolving their accommodation issues by moving to slums while the government more often seeks to oppose the formation and continued existence of such settlements. Government interventions consequently further exposes the informal dwellers of these settlements into extreme vulnerabilities. A significant number of slum settlers are gainfully employed engage across various in informal economic activities and tend to be major drivers of informal economies. In this study, we investigate the impact of forced evictions from a socio–economic perspective by comparing former income earning households of a demolished slum to households in three existing slum communities. As well as investigating the dominant factors prompting slum formations and settlements in two of the three communities which are emerging communities. Primarily, our focus was to map household income and ascertain fatalities post-eviction. Secondly, we intend to profile the households in emerging communities to ascertain factors prompting slum formation and settlements in Lagos, Nigeria. We conclude that evictions are both a cause and consequence of poverty which in itself is a contributing factor to slum proliferation. We outline a few interventions in cases of unavoidable demolition and suggest the need to domesticate International Treaties in the protection of informal dwellers among other things.
