Connexins (Cx) are a family of transmembrane proteins that form gap junction intercellular channels that connect neighboring cells. These channels allow the passage of ions and other biomolecules smaller than 1 kDa, thereby synchronizing the cells both electrically and metabolically. Cxs are expressed in all retinal cell types and the diversity of Cx isoforms involved in the assembly of the channels provides a functional syncytium required for visual transduction. In this chapter, we summarize the status of current knowledge regarding Cx biology in retinal tissues and discuss how Cx dysfunction is associated with retinal disease pathophysiology. Although the contribution of Cx deficiency to retinal degeneration is not well understood, recent findings present Cx as a potential therapeutic target. Therefore, we will briefly discuss pharmacological approaches and gene therapies that are being explored to modulate Cx function and fight sight-threatening eye diseases.

Free-living cats usually live in colonies in urban areas, especially close to parks and neighbourhoods where people feed them without any sanitary control. This can pose a human, animal and environmental health concern due to the close contact between uncontrolled colonies, the population and other domestic and/or wild animals. Thus, this study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains isolated from feral cats in a previous epidemiological study in the Gran Canaria island (Spain). A total of nineteen Salmonella isolates were obtained from November 2018 to January 2019 in a Salmonella epidemiological study in feral cats. All isolates obtained were genotyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PGFE) and were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility, in accordance with Decision 2013/652/EU. PFGE analysis revealed isolates clustering by serovar, with identical clones for serovars Bredeney and Grancanaria, while differing pulsotypes were observed for serovars Florida (88.89 % similarity) and Nima (83.23 % similarity). All but two isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. The results obtained demonstrate that feral cats in the region investigated are a reservoir of Salmonella strains resistant to gentamicin (94.1 %) and of the critically important antimicrobial tigecycline (23.5 %). Hence, they could excrete AMR strains through their faeces and contaminate the environment, favoring the spread of such bacteria to cohabiting pets. Moreover, this widespread presence of AMR Salmonella clones across various serovars highlights the urgent need to implement efficient antimicrobial stewardship and control programs by the local governments due to the ongoing need to protect human and animal health under a One Health concept.

The use of cadavers is essential for veterinary anatomy learning. However, facing an animal corpse can be stressful for veterinary students because of their empathy toward animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate veterinary medicine students' emotions, feelings, and anxiety levels related to practicals with dog cadavers. Two questionnaires were administered to 1st year students (n = 168) at CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia (Spain) before and after their first practical session with cadavers. The application of State–Trait Anxiety Inventory questionnaires showed that “state anxiety” decreased significantly (p < 0.05), from a score of 14.8 before the practical to 10.4 after, and that female students showed higher but not significantly different levels than males. Most (64%) of the students were not willing to donate the bodies of their pets, and those students were more stressed before the practical than their peers, although their anxiety levels significantly decreased by the end of the session. The majority of the students answered positively about emotions, such as feeling calm, safe, not nervous, relaxed and not worried before the practical, and this increased significantly to more than 80% by the end of the session. The visualization of educational videos prior to the session was evaluated positively by students. These results agree with those reported in other health science disciplines, showing that students face practical sessions with corpses in a similar way and suggesting that the use of videos can help decrease anxiety and enhance their learning experience.

Propósito/Contexto. En este artículo queremos evidenciar la existencia de la invisibilización médica y social producida en torno a las pérdidas embriofetales en madres gestantes. Metodología/Enfoque. Se hace una revisión bibliográfica de carácter narrativo y bioético de publicaciones que analizan específicamente cómo afecta a las madres gestantes el modo de comunicar del personal de salud cuando han de notificar la pérdida de su hijo por complicaciones en el desarrollo embriofetal. Revisamos si en esa comunicación se aplican los principios de la Bioética. Resultados/Hallazgos. Tras el análisis realizado encontramos que, con frecuencia, las madres gestantes que sufren esos abortos naturales, a menudo, experimentan una ausencia de empatía y humanidad en los profesionales de la salud que no cubren adecuadamente –éticamente– la magnitud que supone esa pérdida del hijo en desarrollo. Añadimos que esta situación se agrava por el sentimiento de fracaso y soledad, unido a la tristeza y el duelo por el que transitan. Discusión/Conclusiones/Contribuciones. Realzamos el valor ontológico y humano que le otorgan las madres a la muerte del que consideran su hijo, independientemente del momento del desarrollo en el que se encuentre. La muerte imprevista en las primeras semanas del embarazo no debería quedar reducida a un accidente meramente fisiológico y sin importancia a nivel comunicativo. Concluimos que es necesario asesorar a los profesionales de salud a través de protocolos médicos y éticos que les permitan abordar el cuidado de aquellos pacientes que atraviesan esta situación de perdida embriofetal. Consideramos desde la bioética que, ante estas críticas circunstancias, debería priorizarse el principio de beneficencia, habida cuenta de que una mala comunicación afecta negativamente al bienestar físico y psíquico de estas pacientes., Purpose/Context. Evidence the existence of medical and social invisibility produced around embryo-fetal losses in pregnant mothers. Method/Approach. Narrative and bioethical bibliographic review of publications that specifically analyze how pregnant mothers are affected by the way health workers communicate when they must notify the loss of their child due to complications in embryo- fetal development. We review whether the Principles of Bioethics are applied in this communication. Results/Findings. After the analysis carried out, we found that, frequently, pregnant mothers who suffer these natural abortions often experience an absence of empathy and humanity in health professionals who do not adequately cover – ethically – the magnitude of this loss of the child. that is being developed. We add that this situation is aggravated by the feeling of failure and loneliness, together with the sadness and grief they go through. Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions. We highlight the ontological and human value that mothers give to the death of the one they consider their child, regardless of the stage of development in which they are. Unforeseen death in the first weeks of pregnancy should not be reduced to a merely physiological accident with no importance at a communicative level. We conclude that it is necessary to advise health professionals through medical and ethical protocols that allow them to address the care of those patients who go through this situation of embryo-fetal loss. We consider from bioethics that, in the face of these critical circumstances, the Principle of Beneficence should be prioritized, given that poor communication negatively affects the physical and mental well-being of these patients., Objetivo/Contexto. Neste artigo, queremos destacar a existência da invisibilização médica e social produzida em torno das perdas embrionárias em mães grávidas. Metodologia/Abordagem. Foi realizada uma revisão narrativa e bioética da literatura de publicações que analisam especificamente como as mães grávidas são afetadas pela forma como a equipe de saúde se comunica quando elas têm de notificar a perda de seu filho devido a complicações no desenvolvimento embrionário-fetal. Analisamos se os princípios da bioética são aplicados nessa comunicação. Resultados/Descobertas. Após a análise realizada, constatamos que as gestantes que sofrem esses abortos espontâneos muitas vezes experimentam uma ausência de empatia e humanidade por parte dos profissionais de saúde que não cobrem adequadamente – eticamente – a magnitude da perda de seu filho em desenvolvimento. Acrescentamos que essa situação é agravada pelo sentimento de fracasso e solidão, juntamente com a tristeza e o luto pelos quais estão passando. Discussão/Conclusões/Contribuições. Destacamos o valor ontológico e humano que as mães atribuem à morte do que elas consideram ser seu filho, independentemente do estágio de desenvolvimento da criança. A morte imprevista nas primeiras semanas de gravidez não deve ser reduzida a um mero acidente fisiológico sem significado comunicativo. Concluímos que é necessário orientar os profissionais de saúde por meio de protocolos médicos e éticos que lhes permitam lidar com o atendimento das pacientes que passam por essa situação de perda embrionária. Acreditamos que, nessas circunstâncias críticas, o princípio da beneficência deve ser priorizado, uma vez que a comunicação deficiente afeta negativamente o bem-estar físico e psicológico dessas pacientes.

Oestrogens treatment is often used to induce oestrus behaviour in anoestrous mares to aid in the collection of stallion semen and as recipient mares to receive embryos when combined with progesterone. However, there are no studies to describe the effect of dose and individual mare on the intensity and duration of the response, in both anoestrous and cyclic mares. In Experiment 1, 13 anoestrous mares were treated with one of five doses of oestradiol benzoate (OB) (1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 mg) per mare in five consecutive treatment periods (n = 65), to determine the response in terms of endometrial oedema and oestrous behaviour. Experiment 2 and 3 used 3 mg of OB in cyclic mares to confirm or deny the presence of an active corpus luteum (CL). There was a dose rate of OB and individual mare effect (p < 0.05) on the intensity and persistence of endometrial oedema and oestrous behaviour. A total of 2 mg OB was enough to induce endometrial oedema and oestrous behaviour within 48 h in most mares. Mares with an active CL did not show endometrial oedema following treatment of 3 mg OB.

Objetivo: identificar los condicionantes del establecimiento y duración de la lactancia materna (LM) durante la COVID-19 desde la perspectiva de las matronas de la provincia de Castellón (España). Métodos: estudio cualitativo realizado en 2021 mediante la realización de cuatro grupos focales (GF) con matronas de la provincia de Castellón. La recolección de la información se hizo mediante videoconferencias con grabación de voz, que fueron transcritas para posterior análisis del discurso con el programa ATLAS.ti. Resultados: las matronas identificaron como facilitadores de la LM, la puesta en valor de la LM ante las madres y el fomento de la accesibilidad a recursos para solucionar situaciones problemáticas, entre otros. Como barreras refirieron ideas maternas sobre alimentación con fórmulas artificiales construidas desde su biografía, consideración social sesgada sobre el amamantamiento, falta de protocolos para extracción de calostro y déficit en la calidad de información en las redes sociales, principalmente. Reconocen que la pandemia COVID-19 produjo impactos positivos y negativos en la LM. Surgieron medidas para optimizar la promoción de la LM como aumentar la ratio matronas/madres gestantes, asistencia domiciliaria a las 24 h del alta, unificación de protocolos intercentros, ampliación a seis meses el tiempo de incorporación al trabajo y adaptación de la promoción de la LM en redes sociales. Conclusiones: se reportaron condicionantes de la lactancia emergentes del escenario sociosanitario español que sirven de base para diseñar acciones específicas de promoción. Los impactos de la pandemia COVID-19 sobre la LM deben considerarse en situaciones de confinamiento prolongado de la madre., Objective: to identify the conditioning factors for implementation and duration of breastfeeding during COVID-19 from the perspective of midwives from the Castellón province (Spain). Methods: a qualitative study conducted in 2021 through four focus groups (FGs) with midwives from the Castellón province. Data collection was carried out via videoconferences with audio recording, which were transcribed for subsequent discourse analysis with the Atlas Ti program. Results: the enablers for breastfeeding identified by midwives were the promotion of breastfeeding for mothers and the development of access to resources to solve troublesome situations, among others. They reported as barriers the maternal beliefs regarding feeding with artificial formulas based on their biography, a biased social consideration on breastfeeding, lack of protocols for colostrum extraction, and deficient quality of information in social networks, mostly. They acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic had positive and negative impacts on breastfeeding. Some measures came up to optimize breastfeeding promotion, such as an increase in the midwife/ pregnant mother ratio, home care 24 hours after discharge, unification of protocols among centres, extending to six months the time for incorporation to work, and adaptation of breastfeeding promotion in social networks. Conclusions: conditioning factors for breastfeeding were reported, originating in the Spanish sociosanitary scenario, which are useful as the basis for designing specific promotion actions. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding must be considered in situations of prolonged lockout of mothers.

Background: The ‘Living Better’ web-based programme has shown short- and long-term benefits for body composition and psychological variables in obese patients with hypertension by promoting a healthier lifestyle. To further explore the potential of this programme, in this work we aimed to explore the possible effect of the patient’s ‘own doctor’ appearing in the video content of the Living Better intervention. (2) Methods: A total of 132 patients were randomly assigned either to the experimental (EG, n = 70) or control (CG, n = 62) group (with a doctor the patient knew as ‘their own’ or an ‘unknown doctor’, respectively). The body mass index (BMI), motivation towards physical activity (PA), PA levels, motivation to change one’s eating habits, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and eating behaviour were all assessed and compared at baseline and post-intervention (12 weeks). (3) Results: The results of this study confirmed the positive effects of the Living Better programme on BMI and external eating style, with significant improvements in these variables in both groups. In addition, in the EG there was higher intrinsic motivation to change eating behaviour (mean difference of 0.9, 95% CI [0.1, 1.6], p = 0.032) and lower amotivation (mean difference of −0.6, 95% CI [−1.2, −0.1], p = 0.027) compared to the CG. (4) Conclusions: This study suggests that the presence of the patients’ own doctor in the audiovisual content of the Living Better intervention did not have significant additional benefits in terms of BMI or external eating style. However, their presence did improve intrinsic motivation and amotivation related to eating habits.

Post-processing meshing algorithms are widely used to achieve the desired quality in quadrilateral meshes. Assuming that the mesh quality depends on the distortion and the size error of each of its convex quadrilaterals, deficiencies arise by considering solutions based in minimizing either the distortion or the size error. To solve this undesirable situation, in this paper we propose a new smoothing post-processing meshing algorithm. This procedure provides a good compromise between the distortion and the size of each element in the mesh. It is formulated by using an elasticity-based argument and allows to be implemented either in sequential or parallel form. Moreover, it provides a good quality output compared with some of the usual smoothing post-processing meshing algorithms.

This paper synthesizes how three Research Units from three European universities launched a research and didactic program assuming an on-field approach to explore innovative methods of public space activation. The initiative has adopted the formula of three itinerating intensive workshops involving 45 students and ten tutors covering multidisciplinary fields (from Architectural and Urban Design to Environmental Design) to define new kinds of design approaches stimulating both project makers and local communities. This alternative pedagogic method allows students (coming from majors in architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture post-graduate courses) to test innovative approaches in response to local needs. By teaming up with colleagues and teachers familiar with the local environment, the participants can fasten the process of site understanding in terms of historical and current issues. At the same time, a survey on participants’ satisfaction has estimated the program’s performance outcomes. Results initially contribute to reformulating intensive teaching modalities like workshops, providing valuable insights for future experiences.

Students’ academic and social adaptation is linked to factors such as their initial study moti- vations, the atmosphere of the academic environment and their perception of academic wellbeing. This paper analyses the initial adaptation of first-degree students in their first semester through a quantitative ex post facto study with a descriptive-exploratory approach, using a questionnaire as the information-gathering instrument. Findings shed light on the concept of initial adaptation itself (through the creation of an index) and validate the study of the construct through three factors: initial motivation, the academic environment and per- ception of academic wellbeing. Also, the influence on initial adaptation of the academic and social context of the degree course taken is demonstrated:, as the constitutive features of the degree contribute information predicting how students will integrate into the institution. Therefore, it is suggested that institutional means and actions should be designed and put in place in accordance with measurements that indicate how students function best in a spe- cific context (the bachelor’s degree), in order to boost motivation and the perception of aca- demic wellbeing.

Some studies have been conducted in Ethiopia to analyze the predictive factors associated with recovery or mortality in children with acute malnutrition, but no recent studies carried out in Oromia have analyze nutritional recovery status in this children. we studied the factors affecting nutritional recovery for survival in acutely malnourished children Southern Ethiopia. cohort study that included the children admitted to the (blinded for review) hospital (Oromia, Ethiopia) for acute malnutrition from January 2015 to December 2016 (n = 440). Kaplan–Meier tests and log-rank tests were used to describe the survival. Chi-squared tests and Spearman and Mann–Whitney U correlation tests were also employed. The mean survival time was shorter in children with severe versus moderate malnutrition at admission (49 days vs. 101 days; log-rank p = 0.042). The survival time was shorter in children with severe acute malnutrition at the time of admission. Survival time of children with moderate acute malnutrition was shorter in children who came from rural areas compared to urban areas. Severe acute malnutrition was associated with hospital stays, death rates, or transfer to another hospital. Practical implications: the results of this study may improve the care of children with malnutrition.

Leishmaniosis is a zoonosis caused by Leishmania spp., an intracellular protozoan parasite. This parasite is transmitted by sandflies, and the disease is endemic in the Mediterranean basin. In recent years, the number of species which could be a reservoir of the parasite is increased. One of the most relevant species is the horse, due to their contact with humans and ability to control the disease, thus being a possible silent reservoir. In this study, we have analyzed the prevalence and factors related to L. infantum infection in healthy horses in the Mediterranean region. Epidemiological data and serum samples were obtained from 167 apparently healthy horses, and the presence of L. infantum was evaluated via the ELISA method and real-time PCR. The results show 27.5% of prevalence and that the main factors related to infection are equine breed, morphotype, outdoor living, use, and season. In conclusion, the prevalence of L. infantum infection in apparently healthy horses from eastern Spain (Mediterranean basin) is elevated. To control this zoonosis, it would be advisable to carry out more studies on this and other species that could be silent reservoirs of the parasite, as well as carry out measures such as the use of repellents on a regular basis.

Se investigan las nuevas narrativas de los principales canales de youtubers relacionados con la industria cinematográfica. Se propone un modelo que combina la recogida e interpretación de datos cuantitativos y cualitativos con el análisis del contenido, la etnografía digital y los métodos de observación y exploración semiótica/discursiva. Mediante la cuantificación, se deduce cuáles son las tipologías de las nuevas narrativas audiovisuales más demandadas, se discute acerca del tipo de contenido generado a partir de terceros y de las estrategias actuales de los youtubers del sector cinematográfico para mantener afluencia de seguidores. Se evidencia la existencia de narrativas mixtas que triangulan el contenido creado por la industria cinematográfica con el del autor y con el impulsado por el fandom. Concluimos que las creaciones audiovisuales de los youtubers cuyos canales están centrados en la industria cinematográfica están acercando a las personas a contenidos educativos sobre cine desde diferentes perspectivas y campos, así como están expandiendo el relato original del producto cinematográfico a nuevas narrativas y formatos que no existían anteriormente y que podrían ser considerados por la propia industria cinematográfica., Thenew narratives of the main youtuber channels related to the film industry are investigated. A model is proposed that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and interpretation with content analysis, digital ethnography and semiotic/discursive observation and exploration methods. Through quantification, it is deduced which are the typologies of the most de-manded new audiovisual narratives. It also discussed the type of content gen-erated by third parties and the current strategies of youtubersin the film sector to maintain an influx of followers. The existence of mixed narratives that trian-gulate the content created by the film industry with that of the author and that driven by the fandom is evidenced. We concludedthat the audiovisual creations of youtubers whose channels are focused on the film industry are bringing peo-ple closer to educational content about film from different perspectives and fields, as well as expanding the original narrative of the film product to new narratives and formats that did not exist before and that could be considered by the film industry itself

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is the most common disease of the stomach in horses and treatment is based on the oral administration of omeprazole for at least 28 days. Aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two formulations of oral omeprazole—powder paste and gastro-enteric resistant granules—in the treatment of naturally occurring gastric ulcers in racehorses. Thirty-two adult racehorses, aged between 2 and 10 years old, with clinical signs of EGUS were included in this blinded, randomized clinical trial. Two gastroscopies were performed to evaluate gastric lesions in the squamous or glandular mucosa before and after 28 days of treatment. After the first gastroscopy, 2/32 horses were excluded because affected by equine squamous gastric disease (ESGD) 1/4. The remaining horses were divided into 4 groups, and were treated with 2 formulations of omeprazole (gastroenteric resistant granules, group 1, or powder paste, group 3) or with 2 placebo formulations (granules, group 2, or paste, group 4). Treatments were performed in the placebo horses affected by ESGD or equine glandular gastric disease after the T28 gastroscopy control. No differences were found between groups at T0. Differences were found between T0 vs. T28 for granular (P = .002) and powder paste (P = .01) formulations. No differences were detected between the two groups receiving omeprazole formulations at T28 (0.34) and between T0 vs. T28 for either of the groups receiving placebo treatments. For all the variables, the size of the effect was greater than 0.5, proving that the treatments had a considerable effect. Gastro-enteric resistant granules and powder paste omeprazole showed similar efficacy in the treatment of ESGD. The glandular mucosa responded poorly to treatment with omeprazole.

Two experiments were conducted in the Northern (UK) and Southern (Brazil) hemispheres to determine the effect of season (month of conception) on the development of supplementary CL (SCL) and the relationship with pregnancy loss. In experiment 1, 199 pregnancies were followed between Day 14 and term, to determine the number of SCL and pregnancy viability (Northern Hemisphere). From the 199 pregnancies, 178 were obtained from inseminations during the breeding season (March–September), while the rest, 21 pregnancies resulted from conceptions in the non-breeding season (October to February). Pregnancies conceived in the breeding season were more likely (P < 0.01) to have at least 1 SCL (75.8 %, 135/178) than pregnancies from the non-breeding season (33 %, 7/21). However, the pregnancy loss between Days 35 and 120 of pregnancy in mares with no SCL was similar (3.5 %, 2/57; P >0.1) than from mares with SCL (1.4 %, 2/142). In Experiment 2 (Southern Hemisphere), three groups of recipients were used based on their ovarian activity at the time of embryo transfer: Anestrus (n = 8), transitional (n = 7) and cyclic (n = 7) recipient mares. While all transitional and cyclic mares developed at least 1 SCL, only 50 % of anestrous recipients (4/8) developed SCL by 120 of gestation. In conclusion, the development of SCL in pregnant mares is influenced by the time of season of conception, therefore it appears to be regulated by the photoperiod and the endogenous seasonal variation in gonadotropin concentrations. Mares with no SCL were not at increased risk of pregnancy loss.

Background: Intra-articular (IA) combined with intra-osseous (IO) infiltration of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) have been proposed as an alternative approach to treat patients with severe osteoarthritis (OA) and subchondral bone damage. The aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of IO injections of PRGF to treat acute full depth chondral lesion in a rabbit model by using two histological validated scales (OARSI and ICRS II). Methodology: A total of 40 rabbits were included in the study. A full depth chondral defect was created in the medial femoral condyle and then animals were divided into 2 groups depending on the IO treatment injected on surgery day: control group (IA injection of PRGF and IO injection of saline) and treatment group (IA combined with IO injection of PRGF). Animals were euthanized 56 and 84 days after surgery and the condyles were processed for posterior histological evaluation. Results: Better scores were obtained in treatment group in both scoring systems at 56- and 84-days follow-up than in control group. Additionally, longer-term histological benefits have been obtained in the treatment group. Conclusions: The results suggests that IO infiltration of PRGF enhances cartilage and subchondral bone healing more than the IA-only PRGF infiltration and provides longer-lasting beneficial effects.

Introduction and aims: Environmental pollution are one of the most relevant risk factors to atherosclerosis. To know awareness about the importance of urban air pollution as a trigger for hospital admission due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS), this study analyzed levels of different gaseous air pollutants in the air and its correlation with number of ACS. Methods: Epidemiological data of patients admitted for ACS in five towns during the years 2006-2008 were recovered. Clinical data regarding admissions for ACS were obtained from the hospital admission services. Measures of seven air contaminants were recovered from the environmental stations. Mixed model including sex, age, location, and the average levels of air pollutants contaminants as fixed effects and its interaction were performed. Results: The incidence rate of ACS is higher in man than woman, and higher in older people than young. The maximum ACS were in the last trimester of the year, was the most elevated levels of gaseous pollutants have been found. Levels of NO2, NO, and CO are positively correlated between them, and negatively correlated with O3 levels. All air pollutants analyzed increase the number of ACS hospital admission in the five locations evaluated. Conclusions: Levels of gaseous pollutants are related between them, being the levels of NO2, NO, and CO, positively correlated, and negatively correlated with levels of O3. Number of ACS hospital admission increases with levels of five air gaseous pollutants studied., Introducción y objetivos: La contaminación ambiental es uno de los factores de riesgo más relevantes para la aterosclerosis. Para conocer la importancia de la contaminación del aire urbano como desencadenante del ingreso hospitalario por síndrome coronario agudo (SCA), este estudio analizó los niveles de diferentes contaminantes atmosféricos gaseosos en el aire y su correlación con el número de SCA. Métodos: Se recuperaron datos epidemiológicos de pacientes ingresados por SCA en 5 municipios durante los años 2006 a 2008. Los datos clínicos relativos a los ingresos por SCA se obtuvieron de los servicios de ingreso hospitalario. Se recuperaron medidas de 7 contaminantes del aire de las estaciones ambientales. Se realizó un modelo mixto que incluye sexo, edad, ubicación y los niveles promedio de contaminantes atmosféricos como efectos fijos y su interacción. Resultados: La tasa de incidencia de SCA es mayor en hombres que en mujeres, y mayor en personas mayores que en jóvenes. La mayoría de los SCA se dieron en el último trimestre del año, cuando se encontraron niveles más elevados de gases contaminantes. Los niveles de NO2, NO y CO se correlacionan positivamente entre ellos y negativamente con los niveles de O3. Todos los contaminantes atmosféricos analizados aumentan el número de ingresos hospitalarios por SCA en las 5 localidades evaluadas. Conclusiones: Los niveles de contaminantes gaseosos se relacionan entre sí, estando los niveles de NO2, NO y CO correlacionados positivamente entre sí y negativamente con los niveles de O3. El número de ingresos hospitalarios por SCA aumenta con los niveles de 5 contaminantes gaseosos del aire estudiados.

Progesterone (PG) has been shown to have a slowing effect on photoreceptor cell death in mouse models of retinitis pigmentosa when administered orally. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ophthalmically administered progesterone was able to reach neuroretina and thus, the distribution through ocular tissues of different PG formulations was studied. The effect of different initial PG concentration was also investigated. Different formulations with PG in their composition (drops, a corneal/scleral-insert and scleral-inserts) were prepared and assayed. Using whole porcine eyes, the different formulations were topically administered to the ocular surface. Frozen eyes were dissected, the PG in each tissue was extracted in acetonitrile and the amount of PG quantified by UHPLC-MS/MS. Our results show that after topical administration, PG diffuses from the ocular surface and distributes throughout all tissues of the eye. Lower levels of PG were found in sclera, choroid and neuroretina when PG was applied as drops compared to inserts. Our results also show that an increase in the initial PG concentrations applied, resulted in a statistically significant increase in the amounts of PG in aqueous humour, sclera, choroid and neuroretina.

Oestrus ovis is an obligate parasite that causes myiasis in domestic ruminants, being commonly found in the Mediterranean area. From 2009 to 2019 a total of 3476 heads of culling sheep and goats from the Mediterranean coast of Spain were examined for the presence of O. ovis. The total prevalence was 56.3%, significantly higher in sheep than in goats (61.2% and 43%, respectively). Differences were found in the mean annual prevalence, with the highest value being registered in 2018 (61.7%) and the lowest in 2012 (50.3%). Autumn, for sheep, and winter, for goats, were the seasons with the highest number of infested specimens. Temperature, but not rainfall, was found to be associated with prevalence (p < 0.05). Most L1 were found in the anatomic region I (septum, meatus, and ventral conchae), while L2 and L3 were mainly located in regions II (nasopharynx, ethmoid labyrinth, and dorsal conchae), and III (sinuses). The overall intensity was 12.8 larvae per head, significantly higher in sheep (13.3) than in goats (3.5). Our results confirm the high prevalence of O. ovis in sheep and goats in this geographic area over the last decade, with the trend increasing in recent years in association with higher mean temperatures.

Purpose The airway complex is modified by palatine expansion. Computer tomography has been used in the past to determine the change in volume, but there was a lack of a specific, reproducible method for this purpose. The present study sought to determine the accuracy, reproducibility, and repeatability of an innovative digital measurement technique for analyzing the volume of maxillary and nasal sinus airways following suture palatine expansion performed with the Hyrax disyuntor appliance. Methods Patients underwent preoperative and postoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The datasets were subsequently uploaded into a digital treatment planning software to record the volume of the right and left maxillary sinus, as well as the nasal and maxillary sinus airway complex. The Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility statistical analysis methodology was used to evaluate the repeatability and reproducibility of this measurement technique when measuring the volume of maxillary and nasal sinus airways following suture palatine expansion with the Hyrax disyuntor appliance. Additionally, comparative analysis between preoperative and postoperative measures was performed using Student’s t-test for statistical analysis. Results In 5 patients, paired t-tests found statistically significant differences before and after treatment in the volumes of the left maxillary sinus (p = 0.002), right maxillary sinus (p = 0.001), and nasal and maxillary sinus airway complex (p = 0.005) after suture palatine expansion with the Hyrax disyuntor appliance. Conclusion The proposed digital technique is an accurate, repeatable, and reproducible measurement technique for analyzing the volume of maxillary and nasal sinus airways following suture palatine expansion using the Hyrax disyuntor.

Background: In modern times, horses are utilized not only for labour and transportation purposes but also for recreational activities such as competition and pleasure riding. In these various pursuits, the role of vision plays a crucial role. Electroretinography is the most used test to diagnose diseases of the retinal outer segment. There is a wide variety of devices to perform the electroretinography differing one from each other in the corneal electrode and the light stimulation. The Koijman electrode has been tested in dogs but not in horses. The main purpose of this study was to compare electroretinography parameters from horses sedated with detomidine alone or in combination with butorphanol, during a standardized protocol using the Koijman electrode and RETI-port® system. Seven mares were allocated to the detomidine and detomidine plus butorphanol group in a randomised, controlled, crossover study. Friedman and Willcoxon-signed ranked tests were used to compare the electroretinogram parameters. A Student's t-test was used to compare differences in the number of artefacts to valid values ratio obtained under both sedation protocols. Results: Dark adaptation peaked after 16 min under scotopic conditions in both groups. No significant differences in electroretinogram parameters between groups were observed. During the mixed rod and cone response evaluation under scotopic conditions, all mares made a movement of the head resulting in a high number of artefacts. The detomidine plus butorphanol group showed a non-significant tendency to have fewer artefacts and a longer duration of sedation compared to the detomidine group. Conclusions: Detomidine alone or combined with butorphanol may be suitable to use Koijman electrode and the RETI-port® to perform a standardized long protocol in horses with some adaptations.

Recientemente, en Portugal, el Supremo Tribunal Administrativo ha desestimado el acceso a una información que el Parlamento portugués tenía en su poder como consecuencia de la actividad fiscalizadora ejercida por una Comisión parlamentaria de investigación. La fundamentación de esta decisión judicial se basa en que la información de la que ha dispuesto la Comisión de investigación no tiene el carácter de documento administrativo a los efectos de la ley portuguesa de acceso a la información, debido a la naturaleza política de las funciones que ejercen estos órganos parlamentarios. A raíz de esta sentencia, nos planteamos cuál sería la solución que se adoptaría si se plantease este caso en nuestro Derecho, es decir, si es posible acceder a la información que han manejado las Comisiones de investigación del Congreso de los Diputados o del Senado. La ley 19/2013, de 9 de diciembre, de transparencia, acceso a la información pública y buen gobierno (LTE) somete a sus disposiciones al Congreso y al Senado, pero con algunas particularidades. Entre ellas, cabe destacar que la LTE se aplica a las Cámaras parlamentarias únicamente con relación a aquellas actividades que realizan con sujeción al Derecho administrativo. Sin embargo, la LTE obliga a que el Congreso y el Senado regulen en sus respectivos reglamentos la aplicación concreta de esta ley, lo que da lugar a la existencia de distintas regulaciones del derecho de acceso a la información en cada Cámara parlamentaria. Esta diversidad normativa afecta al acceso a la información de la que han dispuesto las Comisiones de investigación del Congreso y del Senado.

Introduction: The complexity of fighting contagious agalactia (CA) has raised the necessity of alternative antimicrobial therapies, such as probiotics. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are present in the mammary gland of small ruminants and their antimicrobial effect have been previously described against species like Mycoplasma bovis but never against Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma). This in vitro study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity against Ma of ovine and caprine LAB strains and a human commercial probiotic (L2) of Lactobacillus spp. Methods: A total of 63 possible LAB strains were isolated from nine ovine and caprine farms in Spain, three isolates (33B, 248D, and 120B) from the 63 strains were selected, based on their capacity to grow in a specific medium in vitro, for an in vitro experiment to assess their antimicrobial activity against Ma in Ultra High Temperature (UHT) processed goat milk (GM). A women commercial vaginal probiotic was also included in the study. The inoculum of L2 was prepared at a concentration of 3.24 × 108 CFU/mL and the average concentration of the inoculum of the wild LAB varied from 7.9 × 107 to 8.4 × 108 CFU/mL. Results: The commercial probiotic L2 significantly reduced the concentration of Ma to 0.000 log CFU/mL (p < 0.001), strain 33B reduced it from 7.185 to 1.279 log CFU/mL (p < 0.001), and 120B from 6.825 to 6.466 log CFU/mL (p < 0.05). Strain 248D presented a bacteriostatic effect in GM. Moreover, the three wild strains and the commercial probiotic produced a significative reduction of the pH (p < 0.001). Discussion: This is the first in vivo report of the antimicrobial potential of LAB strains against Ma and its interaction. Our results support possible future alternative strategies to antibiotic therapy, previously not contemplated, to fight CA in small ruminants. Applying the Principle of Beneficence in aesthetic patients with stringency demands the use of psychological treatment to target the cause of the corporal discomfort or unsatisfaction. If the wrong can be treated it must always be eliminated as the seed that causes the damage, the complex or discontent and not merely attain the effects through surgery. There has been an increase of cases where the root of the problem is not of physical nature but psychological. In these cases, the use of a scalpel would not achieve beneficence., Il beneficio del paziente negli interventi di chirurgia estetica non ricostruttiva deve sempre includere non solo il benessere fisico, ma anche quello psicologico del paziente. È stato dimostrato che questo problema può essere efficacemente affrontato con il ricorso alla consulenza psicologica nei casi in cui l’équipe medica accerti l’esistenza di alterazioni psicologiche. Business innovation is fundamental for sustained economic growth at the regional level. Knowing the common characteristics of innovative companies and their location is essential to carry out appropriate economic policies. To this end, we have carried out a double analysis: one grouping of companies according to characteristics and another by geolocation. This study focused on one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities, the Comunitat Valenciana, a region characterised by significant industrial diversity. Our results show, among other things, that size is not a differentiating factor when it comes to innovation, and that there is a positive relationship between physical clustering and productivity.

The use of blended learning strategies is increasingly common in health sciences, including veterinary medicine; however, there are very few descriptions of these methods being applied to practicals. We describe here the application of blended learning based on the implementation of flipped classrooms with collaborative learning and gamification to the 2020–2021 veterinary medicine gross anatomy practicals at CEU Cardenal Herrera University (Spain). Students prepared for the sessions by pre-viewing videos and taking a quiz before the start. The sessions were conducted in small groups where students learned through collaborative work and reviewed their learning with a card game. A small but significant increase was observed when comparing the scores of practical exams of the locomotor apparatus with those of 2018–2019 (6.79 ± 2.22 vs. 6.38 ± 2.24, p < 0.05), while the scores were similar (7.76 ± 1.99 vs. 7.64 ± 1.92) for the organ system exams. Students’ responses in a satisfaction survey were mostly positive (>80%) regarding the motivating and learning-facilitating effect of this educational method. Our work shows that the application of blended learning in anatomy practicals based on a flipped classroom and with elements of gamification and collaborative work can be an effective way to improve the learning experience of students.

Pimobendan is an inotropic and vasodilator drug with no sympathomimetic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the haemodynamic effects of pimobendan during anaesthesia in healthy senior dogs. A prospective, randomised, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted. Thirty-three dogs (median [range]: 9 [7, 12] years) were anaesthetised for surgical procedures. The dogs were randomly allocated into two groups: eighteen dogs received intravenous pimobendan at a dose of 0.15 mg/kg (PIMOBENDAN), and fifteen dogs received intravenous saline solutions at a dose of 0.2 mL/kg (PLACEBO). Data were recorded before, 1 min, 10 min, and 20 min after injection. Velocity-time integral (VTI), peak-velocity (PV), and mean-acceleration (MA) were measured using an oesophageal Doppler monitor (ODM). Heart rate and mean arterial pressure were also registered. The data were analysed using a two-way ANOVA for trimmed means. Statistical differences were considered if p < 0.05. Twenty minutes after injection, the VTI (13.0 cm [10.4, 22.3]), PV (95.0 [83.0, 160]m/s), andMA (12.6 [9.40, 17.0]m/s2)were significantly higher in the PIMOBENDAN group compared to the PLACEBO group (VTI: 10.5 [6.50, 17.4] cm, PV: 80.0 [62.0, 103] m/s and MA: 10.2 [7.00, 16.0] ms2). No significant differences were observed in the rest of the variables. Using pimobendan during anaesthesia increases VTI, PV, and MA, as measured by an ODM.

The present experiment aimed at determining whether the timing of the maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) was specific to individual mares by determining when luteostasis, a failure to return to oestrus, reliably occurred in individuals following embryo reduction. Singleton (n = 150) and synchronous twin pregnancies (n = 9) were reduced in 10 individuals (5–29 reductions/mare) at pre-determined time points within days 10 (n = 20), 11 (n = 65), 12 (n = 47), 13 (n = 12) or 14 (n = 15) of pregnancy. Prior to embryo reduction, the vesicle diameter was measured in 71% (106/150) of the singleton pregnancies. The interovulatory interval (IOI) was recorded on 78 occasions in seven of the mares in either non-pregnant cycles (n = 37) or those in which luteolysis followed embryo reduction (n = 41). The earliest time post-ovulation at which the embryo reduction resulted in luteostasis in an individual was 252 h (mid-Day 10). Consistency in luteostasis following embryo reduction showed individual variation between mares (272–344 h). Binary logistic regression analysis showed an individual mare effect (p < 0.001) and an effect of the interval post-ovulation at which embryo reduction was undertaken (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant effect of vesicle diameter at the time of embryo reduction (p = 0.099), nor a singleton or twin pregnancy (p = 0.993), on the dependent of luteolysis or luteostasis. The median IOI between individual mares varied significantly (p < 0.05) but was not correlated to the timing of MRP. The timing of MRP varied between the mares but was repeatable in each individual. The factors and mechanisms underlying the individuality in the timing of MRP were not determined and warrant further study.

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) is a contagious respiratory tumor of small ruminants, manifesting in chronic weight loss and respiratory failure. Infection with the betaretrovirus jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is the cause of OPA. Here, we describe the gross and microscopic features of twenty-six sheep and one goat with naturally occurring JSRV-associated OPA. All the animals included in this study had pulmonary lesions morphologically consistent with OPA, but the majority of the observed lesions demonstrated features of both the classical and the atypical form of OPA, and were, therefore, classified grossly as mixed. The gross lesions were located mainly in the cranial pulmonary lobes, were multifocal to coalescing, variable in number and size, flat to slightly raised, firm, and white to grey. Histologically, the cases were classified according to the predominant architectural patterns as lepidic, papillary, acinar, or mixed; the mixed histological pattern was the most prevalent. The aim of this study was to describe the gross and microscopic spectrum of OPA in naturally infected small ruminants from Spain. The mixed form of OPA is less commonly reported, and can be confused with other concurrent pulmonary pathologies (such as BALT hyperplasia in SRLV-associated pneumonia or lungworm granulomas).

This paper analyses the way in which traditional broadcasters are reorienting their strategy to reach young audiences. From this starting point, we analyse the three specific offers launched very recently by Spain's leading audio-visual groups for youth audiences. The online platforms constitute an attempt to compete with the new internet-distributed video offerings that are gaining increasing ground across the world. These platforms (Flooxer from Atresmedia, MTMAD from Mediaset and PLAYZ from TVE) have contributed to the adaptation of their company groups to the new environment in order to get closer to this hard-to-reach young audience.

The development of the skills and knowledge of architecture students is largely shaped during their study at a Faculty of Architecture. There is another way of improving student knowledge of architecture and urban planning. Apart from Erasmus programmes, there are also other international academic and education programmes as well as international workshops. The Activation of the Public Spaces of Historical City Centres Based on Local Communities, jointly conducted by the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology and the Technical School of the University CEU Cardenal Herrera in Valencia, is one such programme. The outcomes of this form of teaching include not only the knowledge and skills allowing one to deal with new conditions that young people have to face while being put through a lot of stress, but also the effort they put into multiple-days-long conferences, workshops or the preparation of their Bachelor’s in engineering projects. International cooperation and workshops participation have contributed to the enhancement of knowledge about architecture and to the development of participating students’ characters.

This article offers a perspective on how the proposed conceptualisation of the idea of displacement can be used to analyse processes of knowledge formation and transformation brought about by the movement of intellectuals in modernity. It develops a theoretical framework that considers the acts of cultural mediation and spatial displacement as key aspects for understanding the structures of knowledge and cultural interpretation produced in the formation of modernity. Making use of historical–sociological tools, it examines biographical information along with the intellectual contributions of two female intellectuals, Flora Tristan (1803–1844) and Nísia Floresta (1810–1855). This contribution seeks to re-address the problem how to understand modernity from a decentred point of view. It procdeds by discussing how the history of modernity and its different cultural manifestations should be analysed with greater attention to practices of mediation and theoretical interpretations as developed by lesser-known intellectuals. Thus, the article also contributes to analysing the agency of women intellectuals in the history of modernity.

A total of 338 weaned rabbits (from the R line, selected for post-weaning growth rate) were used to evaluate the response to 18 generations of selection for increased growth rate on rabbit performance. Animals were obtained from two vitrified populations of the R line: R19V, belonging to the 18th generation (n = 165), and R37V, belonging to the 36th generation (n = 173), were allocated in individual and collective pens (178 and 160, respectively). A fattening trial was conducted from weaning (28 d of age until 63 d of age). During the trial, the body weight (BW), daily feed intake (DFI), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were weekly monitored. Additionally, mortality and morbidity were daily registered. On days 49 to 53, an apparent faecal digestibility trial was also performed (12 animals per generation). Our results indicate that the generation of selection for growth rate did not affect mortality and morbidity. There were no differences in the diet digestibility according to the generation of selection. Regarding performance traits, R37V animals showed higher global BW (+6.7%; p = 0.0011) than R19V animals. R37V animals showed the same BW at weaning; however, R37V animals showed higher BW values in the last three weeks compared with R19V animals. Animals from the R37V generation also showed a higher DFI from 56 to 63 d of age (+12%; p = 0.0152) than R19V animals. However, there were no differences in global ADG and FCR between generations. These results indicate that the selection for growth rate in growing rabbits has slowed down, suggesting a lack of effectiveness in the genetic progress.

The in vitro life cycle of zoonotic helminths is an essential tool for -omic translational studies focused on disease control and treatment. Anisakiosis is an emerging zoonosis contracted by the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish infected with the third stage larvae (L3) of two sibling species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto (s.s.) and Anisakis pegreffii, the latter being the predominant species in the Mediterranean basin. Recently, in vitro culture of A. pegreffii has been developed to enable fast and large-scale production of fertile adults. However, the conditions for larval development from hatching to infective L3 were not fulfilled to complete the cycle. Herein, we used a Drosophila medium supplemented with chicken serum and adjusted different osmolarities to maintain the culture of L3 hatched from eggs for up to 17 weeks. The highest survival rate was observed in the medium with the highest osmolarities, which also allowed the highest larval exsheathment rate. Key morphological features of embryogenesis and postembryogenesis studied by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the excretory gland cell is differentiated already up to 48 h post-hatching. Extracellular vesicles and cell-free mitochondria are discharged between the two cuticle sheets of the second stage larvae (L2). Contemporarly cultivated, two populations of adult A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii reached an average production of 29,914.05 (± 27,629.36) and 24,370.96 (± 12,564.86) eggs/day/female, respectively. The chromosome spreads of A. pegreffii obtained from mature gonads suggests a diploid karyotype formula of 2n = 18. The development of a reliable protocol for the in vitro culture of a polyxenous nematode such as Anisakis spp. will serve to screen for much needed novel drug targets, but also to study the intricated and unknown ecological and physiological traits of these trophically transmitted marine nematodes.

Essential oils (EOs) are natural compounds extracted from plants that exhibit antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. and therefore attract interest as additives in the food industry. especially food for special populations. In the case of children diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. another factor has to be considered. such as the consistency of food. This study evaluated consumer acceptability of infant food with oregano essential oil by children diagnosed with cerebral palsy and a questionnaire was applied to assess consumption habits and profile of the studied population. Samples were evaluated according to odor. flavor. color. and texture acceptability. Consumers were divided by days. with 35 children each day per sample (CONT without essential oil and EO with different concentration of oregano essential oil). Total number of children was 103. In relation to acceptability of color. odor and flavor of the CONT and EO-0.01% received higher grades. the infant food with 0.05% oregano essential oil showed lower scores compared with the other treatments. However. in relation to acceptability. all samples received satisfactory scores. In relation to texture. differences were not observed. The use of oregano essential oil could be an alternative for the development of an infant food.

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic multi-host pathogen that threatens both human and animal health. Animals can act as a reservoir of S. aureus for humans, but very little is known about wild animals’ epidemiological role. Therefore, in this study, we performed a genomic characterization of S. aureus isolates from wildlife, hunters, and their auxiliary hunting animals of Eastern Spain. Of 20 different species, 242 wild animals were examined, of which 28.1% were S. aureus carriers. The common genet, the Iberian ibex, and the European hedgehog were the species with the highest S. aureus carriage. We identified 30 different sequence types (STs), including lineages associated with wild animals such as ST49 and ST581, multispecies lineages such as ST130, ST398, and ST425, and lineages commonly isolated from humans, including ST1 and ST5. The hunters and the single positive ferret shared ST5, ST398, or ST425 with wild animals. In wildlife isolates, the highest resistance levels were found for penicillin (32.8%). For virulence factors, 26.2% of them carried superantigens, while 14.8% harbored the immune evasion cluster (IEC), which indicates probable human origin. Our findings suggest that wild animals are a reservoir of clinically relevant genes and lineages that could have the potential to be transmitted to humans. These data support the notion that wildlife surveillance is necessary to better understand the epidemiology of S. aureus as a pathogen that circulates among humans, animals, and the environment.

Midlife obesity and late-life weight loss confer a greater risk for developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the exact mechanisms behind this phenomenon are currently unknown. The answer could lie on the involvement of gastrointestinal factors, such as adipokines (e.g., leptin, adiponectin, and resistin) and ghrelin. In this context, we conducted a pre-registered systematic review and meta-analysis of 42 cross-sectional and 13 longitudinal studies targeting the associations between leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and ghrelin and the prevalence of general dementia, AD, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We also examined the relationship between the four gastrointestinal factors and neurocognitive outcomes and AD-related cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers. Patients with AD had lower blood leptin and higher resistin levels than cognitively normal participants. Lower leptin and higher resistin were associated with higher degree of cognitive impairment. Additionally, lower late-life leptin levels might be associated with higher prospective risk of dementia and AD, although more studies are needed to corroborate this. Results in ghrelin and adiponectin were not conclusive, with age, sex distribution, obesity, and severity of dementia seemingly acting as moderators across several analyses. Our work might contribute to the identification of new preclinical blood markers of MCI and AD.

In this paper, the consequences of the lack of definition of so-called hybrid threats is explored. Special attention was paid to the importance of the work already completed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and the European Union (EU) regarding the ever evolving types of actions associated with hybrid threats in the so called grey zone. The latter can be thought of as activities undertaken by one state that are harmful to another, albeit not legal acts of war, sometimes referred to as a malevolent manifestation of the concept of peace. The vastly different experiences of democratic and authoritarian states acting in the grey zone was also examined. In addition, the law applicable to hybrid threats was studied to determine if the legal framework is sufficiently adapted to repel state-sponsored and nonstate- sponsored hybrid threats. In addition, the use of the European Convention on Human Rights in the struggle against hybrid threats in Europe and the limits to how state parties can react to hybrid threats established by this treaty was analysed. Lastly, the international rules of attribution of responsibility and difficulties associated with their application with respect to hybrid threats was considered. This article is structured in two parts. The first part explores the difficulty of defining hybrid threats, while the second presents the legal framework used to counter such threats, both at the international and European levels.
