Magnetoelectric coupling in the polycrystalline antiferromagnets CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 and CuFeO2 has been investigated. For both samples, electric polarization was observed in the absence of an applied external magnetic field demonstrating that for multiferroic research ceramics are worth to be studied. The observed magnetodielectric effect for CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 in the electrically polar phase supports the existence of a noncollinear antiferromagnetic state. Interestingly, the electric polarization of this sample can be suppressed by a magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the relative magnitude of the magnetodielectric effect shows a discontinuity, clearly indicating different mechanisms of the magnetodielectric couplings in polar and paraelectric antiferromagnetic states., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, journal paper, Solid State Sci.(2009)

A dielectric anomaly has been found near the incommensurate to commensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition (TN2=230 K) in YBaCuFeO5 ceramics, a compound which crystallizes in an ordered perovskite structure. The existence of electric polarization below TN2 suggests the magnetism induced charge polarization effect that is also confirmed by its strong magnetic field dependence below TN2. Accordingly, the peak near TN2 of the magnetodielectric effect indicates a maximum of magnetodielectric susceptibility near the spin reorientation transition. Considering the abundance of magnetic compounds which structures derive from the perovskite, these results might open up the way toward the control of electric polarization near room temperature., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures, journal paper

The origin of both the Ising chain magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ is studied by $ab$ $initio$ electronic structure calculations and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ has the alternate trigonal prismatic Co$^{2+}$ and octahedral Mn$^{4+}$ sites in the spin chain. Both the Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ are in the high spin state. In addition, the Co$^{2+}$ has a huge orbital moment of 1.7 $\mu_B$ which is responsible for the significant Ising magnetism. The centrosymmetric crystal structure known so far is calculated to be unstable with respect to exchange striction in the experimentally observed $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ antiferromagnetic structure for the Ising chain. Magnetic field induced ferroelectric hysteresis loop observed in Bi0.75Sr0.25FeO3-delta is of prime importance. The coexistence of antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism is responsible for the original magnetoelastic and magnetoferroelectric properties. Upon external magnetic field application, the existence of a magnetostrictive effect supports a structural transition towards a homogeneous antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase. The magnetic field induced polarization is among the highest reported for BiFeO3 based systems in either thin film or bulk forms (Pr=96 microC/cm2 at 10T) while the ferroelectric coercive field is among the lowest reported (Hc=661(V/cm) at 10T). These properties make this material very attractive for technical applications.

Dielectric constant measurement under magnetic field is an efficient technique to study the coupling between charges and spins in insulating materials. For magnetic oxides, the geometric frustration is known to be a key ingredient to observe such a coupling. Measurements for the triangular Ising-like cobaltite Ca3Co2O6 have been made. Single crystals of Ca3Co2O6 are found to exhibit a magnetodielectric effect below TN=25K with a peak in the e(H) curve at the ferri to ferromagnetic transition. This relation between e and magnetization has been modelized by using two order parameters in an energy expansion derived from the Landau formalism and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. This result emphasizes the great potential of insulating transition metal oxides for the search of magnetodielectric effect.

The electronic and magnetic properties of the delafossite CuFeO2 are investigated by means of electronic structure calculations. They are performed using density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation as well as the new full-potential augmented spherical wave method. The calculations reveal three different spin states at the iron sites. Taking into account the correct crystal structure, we find long-range antiferromagnetic ordering in agreement with experiment. The origin of the quasi two-dimensional behavior of PdCoO2 and PtCoO2 is investigated by means of electronic structure calculations. They are performed using density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation as well as the new full-potential augmented spherical wave method. We show that the electric conductivity is carried almost exclusively by the in-plane Pd (Pt) d orbitals. In contrast, the insulating CoO2 sandwich layers of octahedrally coordinated Co atoms may be regarded as charge carrier reservoirs. This leads to a weak electronic coupling of the Pd (Pt) layers. The present study deals with the analysis and classification of interest rate curves. Interest rate curves (IRC) are the basic financial curves in many different fields of economics and finance. They are extremely important tools in banking and financial risk management problems. Interest rates depend on time and maturity which defines term structure of the interest rate curves. IRC are composed of interest rates at different maturities (usually fixed number) which move coherently in time. The present study deals with the analysis and mapping of Swiss franc interest rates. Interest rates depend on time and maturity, defining term structure of the interest rate curves (IRC). In the present study IRC are considered in a two-dimensional feature space - time and maturity. Geostatistical models and machine learning algorithms (multilayer perceptron and Support Vector Machines) were applied to produce interest rate maps. IR maps can be used for the visualisation and patterns perception purposes, to develop and to explore economical hypotheses, to produce dynamic asses-liability simulations and for the financial risk assessments. We present a comparative study of CoO2 layers in the Bi-misfit and NaxCoO2 cobaltates. Co NMR measures the intrinsic susceptibility of the Co layers and is not affected by spurious contributions. At low dopings where room-temperature thermopower (TEP) is large, Curie-Weiss susceptibilities are observed in both materials. But NMR and muSR experiments find neither charge nor spin order down to low temperatures in Bi-misfit, in contrast to the case of NaxCoO2. This demonstrates that metallicity, charge and magnetic orders are specific of the Na layers in NaxCoO2 whereas strong correlations are generic of the cobaltates physics and could explain the large TEP., Comment: 4 pages

In this paper, we report on the magnetic properties of Ba2CoS3, a spin-chain compound recently found to be the first Co2+ containing one-dimensional sulphide to show metallic-like conductivity and negative magnetoresistance. We carried out an in-depth experimental investigation of the local structure of the cobalt atoms, and ab-initio calculations of the resulting electronic configuration of Co2+. From theoretical considerations, the intra-chain coupling was predicted to be antiferromagnetic. Experimentally, several estimates of this magnetic coupling were derived by analysing the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements also provided evidence of a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering, a feature indicative of a noticeable inter-chain coupling in this quasi-1D system.

A 59Co NMR study of CoO2, the x=0 end member of AxCoO2 (A = Na, Li...) cobaltates, reveals a metallic ground state, though with clear signs of strong electron correlations: low-energy spin fluctuations develop at wave vectors q different from 0 and a crossover to a Fermi-liquid regime occurs below a characteristic temperature T*~7 K. Despite some uncertainty over the exact cobalt oxidation state n this material, the results show that electronic correlations are revealed as x is reduced below 0.3. Ca3Co2O6 is a system exhibiting a series of fascinating properties, including magnetization plateaus and remarkably slow dynamics at low-T. These properties are intimately related to the geometrical frustration, which results from a particular combination of features: (i) the chains are arranged on a triangular lattice; (ii) there is a large uniaxial anisotropy; (iii) the intrachain and interchain couplings are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. The uniaxial anisotropy is thus an issue of crucial importance for the analysis of the physical properties of Ca3Co2O6. However, it turns out that no precise investigation of this magnetic anisotropy has been performed so far. The dielectric constant of the Kagome staircase-like Co3V2O8 polycrystalline compound has been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field up to 14T. It is found that the application of an external magnetic field suppresses the anomaly for the dielectric constant beyond 6.1K. Furthermore, its magnetic field dependence reveals a negative magnetocapacitance which is proportional to the magnetic susceptibility, suggesting a common magnetostrictive origin for the magnetic field dependence of the two quantities. This result is very different from that obtained from the isostructural compound Ni3V2O8 that presents a peak in the dielectric constant at the incommensurate magnetic phase transition coupled to a sign change of the magnetocapacitance.

We have investigated the valence, spin, and orbital state of the Co ions in the one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 using x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co-L2,3 edges. The Co ions at both the octahedral Co_oct and trigonal Co_trig sites are found to be in a 3+ state. From the analysis of the dichroism we established a low-spin state for the Co_oct and a high-spin state with an anomalously large orbital moment of 1.7 muB at the Co3+ trig ions. This large orbital moment along the c-axis chain and the unusually large magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be traced back to the double occupancy of the d2 orbital in trigonal crystal field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the antiferromagnetic insulating nature of Ca3FeRhO6 both experimentally and theoretically. Susceptibility measurements reveal a Neel temperature T_N = 20 K, and a magnetic moment of 5.3 muB/f. u., while Moessbauer spectroscopy strongly suggests that the Fe ions, located in trigonal prismatic sites, are in a 3+ high spin state. Transport measurements display a simple Arrhenius law, with an activation energy of 0.2 eV. The experimental results are interpreted with LSDA band structure calculations, which confirm the Fe 3+ state, the high-spin/low-spin scenario, the antiferromagnetic ordering, and the value for the activation energy., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Magnetic properties of polycrystalline Sm0.1Ca0.84Sr0.06MnO3 in pristine and metastable states have been investigated in wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. It was found that below Curie temperature TC = 105 K the pristine state exhibits phase separation comprising ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The metastable states with reduced magnetization were obtained by successive number of quick coolings of the sample placed in container with kerosene-oil mixture. By an increasing number of quick coolings (> 6) the long time relaxation appeared at 10 K and the magnetization reversed its sign and became strongly negative in wide temperature range, even under an applied magnetic field of 15 kOe. The observed field and temperature dependences of the magnetization in this state are reversed in comparison with the ordinary ferromagnetic ones. Above TC, the observed diamagnetic susceptibility of the reversed magnetization state at T = 120 K is ~ - 0.9 x 10-4 emu g-1 Oe-1. Only after some storage time at room temperature, the abnormal magnetic state is erasable. It is suggested that the negative magnetization observed results from a specific coupling of the nano/micro-size ferromagnetic regions with a surrounding diamagnetic matrix formed, in a puzzled way, by the repeating training (quick cooling) cycles., Comment: 20 pages, including figures, accepted to Phys. We investigate both thermoelectric and thermodynamic properties of the misfit cobalt oxide [Bi$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Ca$_{2}$O$_{4}$]$^{RS}_{0.6}$CoO$_{2}$. A large negative magnetothermopower is found to scale with both magnetic field and temperature revealing a significant spin entropy contribution to thermoelectric properties giving rise to a constant S$_0\approx$ 60 $\mu$V K$^{-1}$ equal to the high temperature asymptotic value of the spin 1/2 entropy. Low temperature specific heat measurements allow us to determine an enhanced electronic part with $\gamma\approx$ 50 mJ (mol K$^{2}$)$^{-1}$ attesting of strong correlations. Thereby, a critical comparison between [Bi$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Ca$_{2}$O$_{4}$]$^{RS}_{0.6}$CoO$_{2}$, other cobaltites as well as other materials reveals a universal behavior of the thermopower low temperature slope as a function of $\gamma$ testifying thus a purely electronic origin. This potentially generic scaling behavior suggests here that the high room temperature value of the thermopower in misfit cobalt oxides results from the addition of a spin entropy contribution to an enlarged electronic one., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In the mid-infrared absorption of Sr{1-x}Ce{x}MnO{3} at low electron doping (x = 0.05), a band at 0.3 eV is fully replaced by another one at 0.9 eV as the system becomes antiferromagnetic (AF) of type $G$. A weaker effect occurs at x = 0.10 for an AF phase of type $C$. One thus directly measures the electron hopping energies for spin parallel and anti-parallel to that of the host ion. The Hund's, crystal-field, and Jahn-Teller splittings for the Mn{3+} ions in a Mn{4+} matrix, can also be derived., Comment: Includes 8 Postscript figures

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the Sr3Fe2-xCoxO7-d system (0.2 <= x <= 1.0) were systematically investigated. This oxide system exhibits a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect at low temperatures, reaching up to 80% in 7 T at 5 K. Ac-susceptibility measurements show that there exists a strong competition between ferromagnetic (F) and spin glass states, and the balance between these two magnetic states can be controlled by varying cobalt (x) and/or oxygen contents (d). Importantly, the MR effect is closely related to the magnetic property: the development of magnetic disordering leads to enhancement in the negative MR effect. It is suggested that the compound segregates into F clusters embedded in a non-F matrix, being a naturally occurring analog of the artificial granular-GMR materials, as in the doped perovskite cobaltites, La1-xSrxCoO3 (x < 0.18)., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, to appear in J. Magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaMn1-xRuxO3 (x = 0 - 0.5) samples were investigated in the temperature range 4.2 - 250 K, under external magnetic field up to 15 kOe and under hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar. Transport properties of the samples with x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5 were also investigated under pressure up to 10 kbar. For x up to 0.4, the pressure was found to suppress ferromagnetic correlations and to increase the resistivity, while for x = 0.5 to act in the opposite way. While long ferromagnetic order is completely suppressed, in small clusters ferromagnetic correlations probably survive under pressure, as was revealed for CaMn0.9Ru0.1O3. The pressure effect on the magnetic interactions and on the volume of ferromagnetic phase was found to depend strongly on the Ru-content, and absolute value of the pressure coefficient of spontaneous magnetization was found to decrease practically linearly with increasing x in the range 0.1 < x < 0.5. The experimental data are discussed in the frame of proposed energy-level diagram, which includes magneto-impurity states at low and moderate Ru-doping and mixed-valence states of Ru presented by a strongly-correlated t2g-like band at heavy Ru-doping. An impact of disorder introduced by Ru-doping on the energy diagram and on derived magnetic interactions is discussed. Predictions of the model regarding the pressure effects on conductivity and temperature scales characteristic for magnetic interactions are in reasonable agreement with experiment., Comment: 33 pages, including 8 figures, to be published in Phys. We report on the first optical characterization of both cubic and hexagonal SrMnO$_3$. Room-temperature Raman spectra collected by means of a micro-Raman spectrometer are shown. The spectrum of the cubic compound is characterized by weak and broad bands in agreement with group-theory which predicts no Raman-active phonons for this compound. On the other hand, the spectrum of the hexagonal compound shows six narrow peaks ascribed to one-phonon processes. A complete polarization analysis of the spectra collected from a single crystallite allows us to completely assign the symmetries of the six observed peaks. We have performed both in-plane resistivity, Hall effect and specific heat measurements on the thermoelectric cobalt oxide Ca$_{3}$Co$_{4}$O$_{9}$. Four distinct transport regimes are found as a function of temperature, corresponding to a low temperature insulating one up to $T_{min}\approx $63 K, a strongly correlated Fermi liquid up to $T^*\approx $140 K, with $\rho=\rho_0+AT^2$ and $A\approx 3.63$ $10^{-2} \mu \Omega cm/K^{2}$, followed by an incoherent metal with $k_Fl\leq 1$ and a high temperature insulator above T$^{**}\approx $510 K . Specific heat Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma = 93$ mJ/(mol.K$^{2}$) confirms a rather large value of the electronic effective mass and fulfils the Kadowaki-Woods ratio $A/\gamma^2 \approx 0.45$ 10$^{-5}$ $\mu \Omega cm.K^2/(mJ^2mol^{-2})$. Resistivity measurements under pressure reveal a decrease of the Fermi liquid transport coefficient A with an increase of $T^*$ as a function of pressure while the product $A(T^*)^2/a$ remains constant and of order $h/e^2$. Both thermodynamic and transport properties suggest a strong renormalization of the quasiparticles coherence scale of order $T^*$ that seems to govern also thermopower., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the oxygen deficient perovskites, SrCo1-xMxO3-d with M = Nb and Ru, were investigated. Both Nb- and Ru-substituted cobaltites are weak ferromagnets, with transition temperatures Tm of 130-150 K and 130-180 K, respectively, and both exhibit a spin glass behavior at temperatures below Tf = 80-90 K. It is demonstrated that there exists a strong competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass state, where Co4+ induces ferromagnetism, whereas Nb or Ru substitution at the cobalt sites induces magnetic disorder, and this particular magnetic behavior is the origin of large negative magnetoresistance of these oxides, reaching up to 30% at 5 K in 7 T. The oxygen-deficient perovskite cobaltite SrCo1-xNbxO3-d was synthesized by direct solid-state reaction and its magnetotransport properties were investigated. This cobaltite exhibits an unusual ferromagnetic behavior with a transition temperature Tm = 130-150 K and a spin glass like behavior below Tm. Importantly, this phase reaches a large magnetoresistance (MR) value, MR = -(rH - r0) / r0 = 30% at 5 K in 7 T.
