We investigated theoretically electronic and magnetic properties of the perovskite material SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ with $\delta\leq 0.15$ using a projector-augmented plane-wave method and a Green's function method. This material is known from various experiments to be ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature of 260$\,$K to 305$\,$K and a magnetic moment of 1.5${\,\mu_\text{B}}$ to 3.0${\,\mu_\text{B}}$. Applying the magnetic force theorem as it is formulated within Green's function method, we calculated for SrCoO$_{3-\delta}$ the magnetic exchange parameters and estimated the Curie temperature. Including correlation effects by an effective $U$ parameter within the GGA$+U$ approach and verifying this by hybrid functional calculations, we obtained the Curie temperatures in dependence of the oxygen deficiency close to the experimental values., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, perovskites, magnetic properties, KKR, VASP, CPA, Jij, defects, oxygen vacancies

Wide variety of engineering design tasks can be formulated as constrained optimization problems where the shape and topology of the domain are optimized to reduce costs while satisfying certain constraints. Several mathematical approaches were developed to address the problem of finding optimal design of an engineered structure. Recent works have demonstrated the feasibility of boundary element method as a tool for topological-shape optimization. However, it was noted that the approach has certain drawbacks, and in particular high computational cost of the iterative optimization process. In this short note we suggest ways to address critical limitations of boundary element method as a tool for topological-shape optimization. We validate our approaches by supplementing the existing complex variables boundary element code for elastostatic problems with robust tools for fast topological-shape optimization. Inelastic tunneling spectroscopy of Pb islands on Cu(111) obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy below 1K provides a direct access to the local Eliashberg function of the islands with high energy resolution. The Eliashberg function describes the electron-phonon interaction causing conventional superconductivity. The measured Eliashberg function strongly depends on the local thickness of the Pb nanostructures and shows a sharp maximum when quantum well states of the Pb islands come close to the Fermi energy. Using a first-principles Green's function approach we study magnetic properties of the magnetic binary chalcogenides Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and Sb2Te3. The magnetic coupling between transition-metal impurities is long-range, extends beyond a quintuple layer, and decreases with increasing number of d electrons per 3d atom. We find two main mechanisms for the magnetic interaction in these materials: the indirect exchange interaction mediated by free carriers and the indirect interaction between magnetic moments via chalcogen atoms. The calculated Curie temperatures of these systems are in good agreement with available experimental data. Our results provide deep insight into magnetic interactions in magnetic binary chalcogenides and open a way to design new materials for promising applications.

Two years after the prediction of a giant spin Hall effect for the dilute Cu(Bi) alloy [Gradhand et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 245109 (2010)], a comparably strong effect was measured in thin films of Cu(Bi) alloys by Niimi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 156602 (2012)]. Both theory and experiment consider the skew-scattering mechanism to be responsible, however they obtain opposite sign for the spin Hall angle. The tunneling electroresistance (TER) for ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) with BaTiO_{3} (BTO) and PbTiO}_{3} (PTO) barriers is calculated by combining the microscopic electronic structure of the barrier material with a macroscopic model for the electrostatic potential which is caused by the ferroelectric polarization. The TER ratio is investigated in dependence on the intrinsic polarization, the chemical potential, and the screening properties of the electrodes. A change of sign in the TER ratio is obtained for both barrier materials in dependence on the chemical potential. The inverse imaginary Fermi velocity describes the microscopic origin of this effect; it qualitatively reflects the variation and the sign reversal of the TER. The quantity of the imaginary Fermi velocity allows to obtain detailed information on the transport properties of FTJs by analyzing the complex bandstructure of the barrier material., Comment: quality of figures reduced

On the basis of first-principles calculations we study the effect of interfacial Cr on the magnetoelectric properties of a composite multiferroic Fe_L/BaTiO_3(001), with the Fe thickness L=1,2 monolayers. The use of the CrO_2-terminated interface instead of TiO_2 may significantly enhance magnetoelectricity in the system, showing an unexpected change in magnetization induced by the electric polarization reversal. In the case of L=2, for instance, the magnetic order of the Fe bilayer can be switched from nearly zero ferrimagnetic to ferromagnetic upon polarization reversal., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

By detailed first-principles calculations we show that the Fermi energy and the Rashba splitting in disordered ternary surface alloys (BiPbSb)/Ag(111) can be independently tuned by choosing the concentrations of Bi and Pb. The findings are explained by three fundamental mechanisms, namely the relaxation of the adatoms, the strength of the atomic spin-orbit coupling, and band filling. By mapping the Rashba characteristics,i.e.the splitting and the Rashba energy, and the Fermi energy of the surface states in the complete range of concentrations. Our results suggest to investigate experimentally effects which rely on the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in dependence on spin-orbit splitting and band filling., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate the induction of a giant Rashba-type spin-splitting on a semiconducting substrate by means of a Bi trimer adlayer on a Si(111) wafer. The in-plane inversion symmetry is broken so that the in-plane potential gradient induces a giant spin-splitting with a Rashba energy of about 140 meV, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than what has previously been reported for any semiconductor heterostructure. The separation of the electronic states is larger than their lifetime broadening, which has been directly observed with angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are confirmed by relativistic first-principles calculations. We envision important implications for basic phenomena as well as for the semiconductor based technology.

The recently discovered giant magnetic anisotropy of single magnetic Co atoms raises the hope of magnetic storage in small clusters. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic anisotropy and the spin dynamics of Fe and Co atoms, dimers, and trimers on Pt(111). Giant anisotropies of individual atoms and clusters as well as lifetimes of the excited states were determined with inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The short lifetimes due to hybridization-induced electron-electron scattering oppose the magnetic stability provided by the magnetic anisotropies., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The (001) surfaces of polar perovskites BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ have been studied from first principles at T=0 K. For both cases of polarization, the most stable TiO-terminated interfaces show intrinsic ferroelectricity. In the topmost layer, where the O atoms are $>$0.1 \AA above Ti, this leads to metallic instead of the insulating behavior of the electronic states that may have important implications for multiferroic tunneling junctions., Comment: 5 Pages, 4 figures, accepted by PRB

We present a first-principles theory of the variation of magnetic anisotropy, K, with temperature, T, in metallic ferromagnets. It is based on relativistic electronic structure theory and calculation of magnetic torque. Thermally induced `local moment' magnetic fluctuations are described within the relativistic generalisation of the `disordered local moment' (R-DLM) theory from which the T dependence of the magnetisation, m, is found. We apply the theory to a uniaxial magnetic material with tetragonal crystal symmetry, L1_0-ordered FePd, and find its uniaxial K consistent with a magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the Fe/Pd layers for all m and proportional to m squared for a broad range of values of m. This is the same trend that we have previously found in L1_0-ordered FePt and which agrees with experiment. This account, however, differs qualitatively from that extracted from a single ion anisotropy model. We also study the magnetically soft cubic magnet, the Fe(50)Pt(50) solid solution, and find that its small magnetic anisotropy constant K_1 rapidly diminishes from 8 micro-eV to zero. K evolves from being proportional to the seventh power of m at low T to the fourth power near the Curie temperature., Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures

On the basis of a first-principles, relativistic electronic structure theory of finite temperature metallic magnetism, we investigate the variation of magnetic anisotropy, K, with magnetisation, M, in metallic ferromagnets. We apply the theory to the high magnetic anisotropy material, L1_0-ordered FePt, and find its uniaxial K consistent with a magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the Fe/Pt layering for all M and to be proportional to M^2 for a broad range of values of M. For small M, near the Curie temperature, the calculations pick out the easy axis for the onset of magnetic order. We study Ni80Fe20-based permalloys with the relativistic spin-polarized Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker electronic structure method. Treating the compositional disorder with the coherent potential approximation, we investigate how the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, K, and magnetostriction, lambda, of Ni-rich Ni-Fe alloys vary with the addition of small amounts of non-magnetic transition metals, Cu and Mo. From our calculations we follow the trends in K and lambda and find the compositions of Ni-Fe-Cu and Ni-Fe-Mo where both are near zero. These high permeability compositions of Ni-Fe-Cu and Ni-Fe-Mo match well with those discovered experimentally. We monitor the connection of the magnetic anisotropy with the number of minority spin electrons, Nmin. By raising Nmin via artificially increasing the band-filling of Ni80Fe20, we are able to reproduce the key features that underpin the magnetic softening we find in the ternary alloys. The effect of band-filling on the dependence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy on atomic short-range order in Ni80Fe20 is also studied. Our calculations, based on a static concentration wave theory, indicate that the susceptibility of the high permeability of the Ni-Fe-Cu and Ni-Fe-Mo alloys to their annealing conditions is also strongly dependent on the alloys' compositions. We describe a scheme for first-principles calculations of the static, paramagnetic, spin susceptibility of metals with relativistic effects such as spin-orbit coupling included. This gives the direction for an applied modulated magnetic field to maximise its response. This easy axis depends on the modulation's wave-vector q. For h.c.p. yttrium we find the peak response at a q= (0,0,0.57)pi/c, coincident with a Fermi surface nesting vector, to have an easy axis perpendicular to q. This is consistent with the {\it helical} anti-ferromagnetic order found in many dilute rare earth-Yalloys. Conversely, the easy axis for the response to a uniform magnetic field lies along the c-axis. The conduction electrons' role in the canting of magnetic moments in Gd-Y alloys and other rare earth materials is mooted.
